Volunteer of the Year: Stephanie Gubelin

Stephanie Gubelin’s efforts to register voters in local counties ahead of the 2020 presidential election is what earned her Volunteer of the Year.

To get the vote out, Gubelin went out herself and gave people a reason to register By AMY SCATTERGOOD Contributing Writer It’s been four months since the presidential election, and Stephanie Gubelin of Lake Placid still gets animated when she talks about the reasons people gave her for not registering to vote. Gubelin, 71, a slight woman with a gray pixie haircut who favors pink glasses and scarves, first started volunteering for voter registration drives in 2018. But it was the 2020 election that sent her nascent volunteerism into overdrive. “One woman didn’t want to vote because she didn’t want to tell anybody what to do, which I thought was very interesting,” Gubelin said, thinking back about the months she spent helming tables outside drug stores, grocery stores, post offices and farmers markets. “People said a lot of things,” she noted, then began cataloging the most common reasons she was given: “It won’t make any dif-

ference anyway. I hate politicians and all the bickering, and I don’t want to participate in that. It’s only something for older people or yahoos or goody-goodies. I don’t know enough to vote intelligently, and I don’t have the time to look into that stuff, so I might make a mistake.” So Gubelin brought a paper scroll and magic markers to the registration tables and began asking folks to write down their reasons — or, for the many, many others who did register, to give comments. She still has the scroll, an ad hoc testimony in bright colors, to remind her and the group of 35 or so fellow volunteers of all the work they did in the months leading up to the November 2020 election. Gubelin credits a weekly current events group she attended at the Saranac Lake Free Library for planting the seeds for her volunteering. (Continued on Page 6)

“I started wondering, instead of just talking all the time, what could I do?” she said recently, thinking back over the seeming eternity that was three years ago. Getting folks registered seemed something she could do herself fairly easily, at least at first, so she started working a table at local farmers markets. The 2020 election cycle galvanized her and others in the community to expand their efforts. Joining Gubelin were people from the current events group, some folks from Adirondack Voters for Change (a Saranac Lake-based progressive advocacy group), a few more from her water aerobics group and some friends that she “kind of roped into it.” “It was a really passionate election time,” said Gubelin, a former massage therapist and private cook who moved to Lake Placid from New York City in 1989. Before COVID-19 hit and closed down group activities last March, she worked with Saranac Lake High School students and staff to host registration events. After the pandemic they continued, doing distanced events outside. With Gubelin’s help, in the summer, a group of students put up handmade signs in the community, urging people to vote. Gubelin and the others put information and flyers into the boxed meals offered by Meals on Wheels in Tupper Lake and the weekly Community Suppers prepared by the First United Methodist Church of Saranac Lake. They expanded their tabling efforts to include food pantries at Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake, the job fair at North Country Community College organized by the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, and at dairy distributions in Vermontville and Saranac Lake. They put “Your Voice Matters” flyers up in Stewart’s Shops and other local stores, and in lowerincome housing units. (She is quick to thank local businesses such as Kinney Drugs and Price Chopper for letting her set up tables. Many other businesses, she noted, did not. “That was disappointing.”) And then there were the postcards she and the other volunteers wrote and sent out — 3,000 of them, to likely unregistered voters across Franklin County. In partnership with Common Cause, a Washington, D.C.-based watchdog group, and the New York Civic Engagement Table, a New York state nonprofit that offers data support, the postcards were a way to reach a wide group of possible voters. “We concentrated mostly on Franklin County because Franklin County had voter registration in the 60th percent — versus Essex County, which had voter registration in the 80th percent,” said Gubelin. (Figures from New York state’s elections.ny.gov website show election enrollment by county.) Gubelin, who admits that she only recently got a smartphone and rarely uses it, enlisted friends to help with social media. Susan Hahn set up an Adirondack Votes 2020 Facebook page, and, hoping to reach a younger audience, Liz Harvey and Kaet Wild started an Instagram page. As the election neared, Gubelin said that she and (Continued on Page 8)

How volunteers benefit from giving back

Metro Creative Many people are compelled to volunteer out of a desire to help others. Though helping others is the primary motivator for many volunteers, the men, women and children who give up their free time in support of a good cause gain much from their experiences. In fact, new volunteers may be surprised at all the rewards they can reap from helping others. The Mayo Clinic Health System says researchers have attempted to measure the benefits that volunteers receive from their volunteer efforts. It has been dubbed a “helper’s high.” Various health benefits have been noted, but the perks go beyond that. • Make new friends: Volunteerism is a great way to make new friends and strengthen existing relationships. Having common ground, like a volunteer activity, is a great way to build a friendship with like-minded individuals. • Increase social skills: Volunteering enables you to meet new people from all backgrounds. You also may be placed into different situations and have to act on the fly. This can help you develop social relationship skills.

• Help build community: The Corporation for National & Community Service says that volunteers help strengthen their communities through volunteer service. Connections are made with the people you are helping and with other volunteers. • Improve self-esteem: When teens or young adults volunteer, they get positive responses to their efforts, which can improve their self-esteem. Self-esteem can keep people away from drugs or alcohol or potentially compulsive behaviors. • Helps stave off dementia: There is some evidence that people who volunteer may be at a lower risk for dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. This is particularly helpful for senior volunteers. • Overcome loneliness: The Campaign to End Loneliness indicates that close to 45 percent of people in the United States and the United Kingdom. admit to feeling lonely. Volunteering is a simple way to reverse such feelings. • Reduce stress levels: By devoting time spent in service to others, people can get a sense of meaning and appreciation that helps them to slow down. That can help them feel less stress and all the negative consequences that come with stress.

A remaining volunteer fire-rescue squad

By AMY SCATTERGOOD Contributing Writer WILMINGTON — The men and women who make up the Wilmington Volunteer Fire and Rescue squad are among the last of a dying breed — the volunteer fire department and emergency squads that used to be common in towns and cities across the country, and the North Country. These days there are 17 members of the squad, based out of a fire station that dates back to 1958. The fire district of the town of Wilmington was established in 1924, and the common room of the station functions as hub, meeting place, storage room and museum. The walls are lined with photos of old emergencies — a propane truck that rolled into the AuSable River, a fire that made the national news —

plus group shots from the ‘60s of men long gone and dozens of parade trophies. Oxygen tanks are stacked on a long table by the door. “Volunteerism means different things to different people,” said Charlie Terry, 62, who first joined the squad in 1979. “It was something you did,” said Terry. “It’s a big, big commitment to be a volunteer. I fell in love with it.” The squad used to number twice what it does now, but over the years fewer people have been able or willing to give the considerable time and commitment it takes, not only to do the job but to complete the many hours of required training first. Wilmington’s unit is combined firefighting and rescue; of (Continued on Page 12)

the 17 members, six are trained emergency medical technicians. Most fire and rescue squads are now paid. “When I was a kid, giving that to your community was something you were encouraged to do,” said Terry. “It’s not like that anymore. I don’t know why.” The squad is a small, tight-knit group, all of whom live in Wilmington — one of the requirements of being a member. Though there are a few younger members, such as Brett Durant, 26, who joined in 2017, most of the group is over 50 — and all of them have now been vaccinated for COVID-19. Durant isn’t a volunteer but an employee, an EMT whose salary is shared between the squad and the town, a recent concession to the reality of the dwindling ranks of volunteers. Daniel Hansen, 63, joined the crew in 2003. “I don’t do fire; I’m an ambulance driver.” Of the 250 to 300 calls they get per year, about 85% are ambulance-related. “If they have an emergency of any kind,” said Hansen of the calls they get, “chimney fire, medical emergency, their house is on fire, their car is on fire. People call 911. In a small town, the reality is that there’s a very small group of people that guarantee this happening.” And with Whiteface Mountain Ski Center on the

edge of town, the squad responds not only to locals but to many of the tourists who come to the area to ski in the winter and to bike and hike in the summer on those ski trails. “That’s created more business for the ambulance,” Hansen said. “Structure fires, forest fires in the summer,” continued Hansen. “It takes dedicated people to do that sort of thing. Just to help people in a time of need. It’s important work.” Hansen is part of a long tradition. “When I was a kid my father was a volunteer fireman. I remember back then he had a plectron,” Hansen said of the nowdefunct radio receivers that first responders used to use. “It was a great big thing that looked like an oldtime radio. When they’d get a call, this thing would start chirpin’.” Now, he says, they use pagers — themselves nearly defunct. On either side of the firehouse are parking bays for the serious equipment necessary for that work: two massive fire trucks, two ambulances, one rescue truck, one brush truck, a tanker, two boats and a fourwheeler, all to serve a year-round population of about 1,200. “The bottom line is it’s a lot of fun helping,” said Louis Adragna, 46, who joined the squad in 2000 and has served as its chief since 2008. “I can’t stop,” said Terry of the work he’s been doing for 42 years. “These are my people. I can’t leave them unattended.”

‘This is home cooking’ Volunteer Anita Meserole dishes up meals in the basement kitchen of the First United Methodist Church of Saranac Lake.

Volunteers move weekly meals to delivery in pandemic

By AMY SCATTERGOOD Contributing Writer SARANAC LAKE — Churches have long operated as support systems for their communities in ways that extend far beyond matters of faith. This has become more apparent — and more crucial — during the pandemic, as food insecurity and isolation have hit critical levels. The First United Methodist Church of Saranac Lake has been cooking meals for those in need for years, operating a weekly Community Supper program from the church’s basement kitchen. When COVID-19 shut down the suppers last March, “we needed to do something,” said pastor Eric Olsen. So the church and its crew of volunteers shifted to delivery, becoming a kind of ecclesiastical Grubhub. Every Wednesday, a small group of volunteers gathers in the large downstairs kitchen and prepares a generous home-cooked meal for anyone who needs it — the number of meals has recently topped 200. The hot meals are packed and loaded into waiting cars by volunteer drivers who deliver them not only to folks in Saranac Lake but to Bloomingdale, Gabriels and Ray Brook. “There are people who certainly need the food. Others are happy to accept it. Other people need the contact,” said Olsen recently from his office at the top of the stairs above the busy kitchen. “There are a number of needs that are greater,” said Olsen, even than food. “People having someone who cares. At least they’re talking to somebody. At a time when going outside is a potential death sentence — and they’re not good cooks — this is meeting a num-

ber of different needs.” The food used in the suppers comes from the Regional Food Bank, from grants and from donations. Lately, the Wednesday dinners have also included additional supplies of canned and packaged goods such as cans of soup, vegetables and corned beef hash, cereal, granola bars and jerky — and homemade cookies made by longtime volunteer Marilyn Gillespie. On a recent Wednesday, a small group of women gathered in the large open kitchen, which follows state Department of Health regulations for commercial use, forming a brigade line filling containers with barbecued ribs, baked beans, cole slaw and mac-andcheese. “It started as soup and sandwiches,” said Anita Meserole as she added a freshly baked roll to the meal before sealing the top of the container. She’s been volunteering since the Community Suppers started in 2007. “Everybody really likes the food,” said volunteer Marlene Martin. “This is home cooking.” She and Olsen note that as the suppers have become more popular, some folks have been calling up asking what’s on the menu. “We’re not a restaurant,” Olsen said with a smile. There are 25 to 30 volunteers involved in the weekly effort, from the folks who peel potatoes, wash dishes and bake cookies to those who deliver the meals. Everyone is masked and very mindful of safety, especially as all those who do the cooking are over 55. (Continued on Page 17)

Making masks by the thousands

By AMY SCATTERGOOD Contributing Writer SARANAC LAKE — A year into the pandemic, it’s sometimes hard to remember that masks were once a scarce commodity. Long before they came in every style, pattern and color imaginable, a group of local volunteer artists and seamstresses banded together to make them from scratch. After her son was diagnosed with COVID-19 last March, and “feeling desperate and unable to help in any way,” Gail Brill decided to fill what was then a massive need: mask-making. She started the Tri-Lakes Community Makers, a group that grew to over 50 local women who eventually produced 4,600 masks. “At that time there was a real sense of panic,” said Brill, a graphic designer who recruited area sewers, as well as others who could help with the sourcing of materials, organization and distribution. Brill made different designs for the masks, drawing illustrations and emailing them to the Makers. “We bought fabric as a group. There was no elastic anywhere. So we used T-shirts, cut them into strips,” she said of the various early designs she crafted at her Saranac Lake design studio. “I would put a kit together with some coconut macaroons, because I felt like I had to keep people happy,” Brill said. “People were picking up brown bags from a green

bin,” she said of the distanced system she put into place, which included a drop-off bin outside her studio. “I don’t know what my neighbors were thinking. This went on for months. A lot of late nights, a lot of macaroon baking.” “We made masks for construction companies, businesses, food service and animal hospital workers, the rescue squad, health care workers, private practice doctors, food pantry workers, boat stewards,” said Susan Waters, who joined the Makers after seeing Brill’s Facebook page about the project. “We made some for the Franklin County department of power and water, for pizza delivery people, sheet metal workers, corrections officers,” continued Waters, a former production manager who set up a series of spreadsheets to track the process. “I think we even sent some to California.” As the months went by, the group filled orders for drivers delivering Meals On Wheels, the police department and the hospital. When schools reopened, the Makers made 1,300 masks for the Saranac Lake school district. “We morphed a little bit,” said Waters. “The bulk of the orders began to taper off by the end of June. The weather got better, organizations were finally able to get masks, people started making their own.” So the Makers pivoted to making surgical caps for Adirondack Health — 325 of them. “We got lots of donations of fabric, of funding, we had people volunteer to deliver things — it really was a community effort,” said Waters. “I made some very good friends through this process.” “Now we’re kind of retired,” said Brill recently, though the Makers filled an order in January for day care workers in Elizabethtown. “I have several hardcore seamstresses still asking,” Waters said. “They don’t want to quit; they just thrived on helping people. It was a lovely thing to be a part of.”

‘If we’re not here to serve people, we’ve got no business being here.’ Associate Pastor Kelly Haig, First United Church of Saranac Lake

Meal delivery

(Continued from Page 14) “The church provides the pots and pans, the labor, but it’s a community effort,” said Olsen. “People here know they’re blessed, and are giving back. Nobody expected to be doing this for a year.” As soon as the hot meals are packed and carried

upstairs in boxes by runners, they’re loaded into the back of a waiting car and sent out on delivery — about six or seven runs every Wednesday. “It’s been going up about 10 a week recently,” said Kelly Haig of the number of requested weekly meals as he loaded boxes into the back of his vehicle. An associate pastor of the church for 35 years, Haig is a regular volunteer. “If we’re not here to serve people,” said Haig as he closed the trunk, “we’ve got no business being here.”
