Volunteer of the year: Julie Harjung (Enterprise photo — Jesse Adcock)

Julie Harjung
By JESSE ADCOCK Staff Writer SARANAC LAKE — Under Julie Harjung’s leadership the Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad has become its own organization, growing from two ambulances to five, from one paid member to 25, and from 800 calls per year to 1,700. But Harjung is the first to tell you it wasn’t all her doing. “I’m the president, but I certainly don’t do it alone,” Harjung said. “I just happen to be the one wearing the white hat right now, but I’m certainly not the one that does it all.” Nevertheless, she does a great deal. She volunteers more than 50 hours a week as president and chief of the SLVRS — on top of her day job as a forest ranger with the state Department of Environmental Conservation. It’s for this reason that she is the Tri-Lakes Volunteer of the Year, an annual community-nominated honor the Adirondack Daily Enterprise and Lake Placid News have awarded since 1991. Growing into its own The SLVRS service area is the largest in the state, and Harjung said that’s a challenge to work out logistically. The same emergency situation can present different problems, depending on where an individual is. Someone here in the village isn’t as tricky as an individual a mile off of a trail, or in the Loon Lake area, Harjung said. An EMT has to do a lot more to keep a patient stabilized as these distances increase. This and other challenges led Harjung to help incorporate the SLVRS into its own nonprofit organization about nine years ago.
The Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department and the SLVRS were one entity, and splitting the services apart was not her first choice, Harjung said. Volunteer fire departments can’t bill insurance companies for services under New York law. Harjung said she and current SLVRS board member Mary Brown worked to try and get the law changed, but it didn’t work out. “We didn’t have enough volunteers to cover the daytime calls,” Harjung said. “We were OK at night, but the daytime calls, everybody was working. So we needed to hire. And in order to hire, we needed to make money, and in order to make money, we needed to bill.” So Harjung worked for 18 months to get the SLVRS established as its own nonprofit entity, in what she described as heaps of paperwork meeting government regulations. The SLVRS was formed in 2010. She became president and chief later that year. The squad moved into its current space at 110 Broadway in 2013. “We’ve kept really good relations with (the fire department), and still utilize the fire department for our 911 drivers so we’re kind of using that shared resource,” Harjung said. “They do our extrication, they do our water rescue, you know, anything that’s ATV or something like that; that’s all their equipment. And we just kind of become the emergency medical staff on hand.” While this was the first time Harjung had to start a new rescue service, Saranac Lake is not her first time volunteering with emergency services. Zach Clark prepares for the Adirondack Community Church’s clothing drive that was held Nov. 2-3 last year.
Clothing drive spreads warmth
(Enterprise photo — Griffin Kelly)
By GRIFFIN KELLY Staff Writer LAKE PLACID — Amanda Hoops organized a table of men’s fleece jackets while Rose VanWormer stocked a circular rack of women’s coats. There were nine tables and three racks of winter clothes set up at the Adirondack Community Church — everything from Northface jackets to rubber snow boots to 1980s-style windbreakers — but the team worked quickly, putting hundreds of articles of clothing in the correct places. Soon more than 100 families who need the extra help would visit and stock up for the winter. “Our goal is to make sure everybody stays warm for the winter months,” said Zach Clark, a volunteer with the church. “It’s a long winter here, so anybody who’s in need — young, old, doesn’t matter — just as long as they’ve got something warm to wear.” Clark said charity work has been a regular part of his life ever since he was a child, and his parents would have the family volunteer for various acts of kindness. “We were always very lucky to have the stuff we had as kids growing up,” he said. “Part of being a member of this church is looking out for each other
and people in need. If someone needed a jacket, we found a jacket. That’s just what we do. We do the right thing and help others.” Another person helping with the clothing drive, Tara Wright, couldn’t immediately answer why she volunteers and participates in charity events. It’d be like asking her “why do use your legs to walk?” or “why do you breathe air?” “I got involved with it originally because the church asked me to take it on as one of their missions for the community,” Wright said. “So far, I’ve seen a pretty good effort from both the community and the church in making donations.” The church also provides coffee and food during the clothing drive. “We try to make it feel more like a shopping experience,” Wright said, “so people don’t feel like they’re getting a handout.” Because of its events calendar, Olympic legacy and big hotels, Lake Placid is often perceived as a financially well-off village by the outside eye; however, that is not the case, according to Clark. “Growing up here in this area, you know how (Continued on Page 25)

Four volunteers keep Woodsmen’s Days rolling
By AARON CERBONE Staff Writer TUPPER LAKE — The Woodsmen’s Days weekend festival has been a staple of Tupper Lake summers since 1983, celebrating a history rooted in the 1930s, and today a core group of four volunteers keeps it running each year. Amanda Lizotte, Nielson Snye, Buck North and Denise Villeneuve-Roberts organize the event, where hundreds will gather to cut logs, climb greased poles and drive giant logging vehicles. The event is not as large as it used to be, according to the organizers, but they keep the tradition going, carving out an annual audience and hoping for a perfect alignment of weather, activities and attendance to rival the festivals of their youths. “This is a logging community and we kind of want to keep that tradition going,” Lizotte said. “It used to be such a huge event in Tupper and I’d love to see it get back to that. But it’s hard when there’s only four of us.” Snye said this is not a unique problem in the area. “Ask any organization around about the struggle of having enough manpower to effectively and enjoyably run a program, and you will see everyone is in the same boat,” Snye wrote in an email. Still, they are able to find a hard-working group of loggers, kids, old-timers and visitors to put on the three-day event each year. “We have had a dedicated group of great, passionate volunteers year after year,” Snye wrote. “Taking time from work and their families to make this a successful show. We could not do it without the support of the volunteers, local businesses, town and village governments.” Lizotte said they need volunteers to run the kids games, announce the night games, design the programs and judge the parade floats. Lizotte said in the past she has bribed judges with doughnuts to convince them to take on the responsibility. Lizotte and Snye both said they are also always looking for more vendors to sell their wares. “I am excited that there has been a lot of new interest in the past few months from vendors across the state looking forward to attend this year’s show,” Snye wrote. For Snye, the festival has been a part of his life as long as he can remember, and he has been directly involved with the organization for more than 16 years. “My family has been involved in the Woodsmen’s Association since its beginning,” he wrote in an email. “I can remember ‘helping out’ at the event each year with my parents and grandparents growing up.” “What keeps me coming back year after year? Tradition. Community,” Snye wrote. “Tupper Lake was founded by the lumber industry and I feel this event honors the members of this community and industry past, present and future.”
Events like the tug-of-war contest have been a crowd favorite at the annual Woodsmen’s Days.

Lizotte will organize the parade for her fourth year this summer, though she never expected she would. “I never meant to get this involved,” Lizotte said. “I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, of course. (After) three years of doing it, I kind of have the hang of it.” She said she has grown the number of tractors and floats in the parade every year. The parade, which recently has taken place on Demars Boulevard, will return to its original route this year, starting at the VFW on Park Street, and continuing to the municipal ball park. Lizotte said the positive feedback she gets from attendees keeps her coming back to organize the festival. “Down at the skidding competition last year there was this one family. ... These people had never been in that kind of equipment and everyone was screaming and hollering and clapping,” Lizotte said, then quoting the family. “‘We’re coming back next year and we’re bringing mom next time.’ Things like that, that’s kind of why we’re still sticking around.” “I know we’re always going to have negative feedback, there’s always going to be someone to complain. ‘There’s nothing down there.’ or ‘It costs too much.’ Those people that give the negative feedback ... if they could just come and volunteer,” she continued. “Come help out if you have a better solution.” Snye said anyone interested in joining the volunteers can email woodsmensdays@gmail.com to get involved.

“That’s families, not people,” Clark said. “So it could be a family of three or 10. That’s just a lot of people we’ve helped out in the community.” While the church gathers as much clothes as possible, Clark said boots are a hard article to provide because size is key. Anybody can wear a jacket that’s too big for them and still feel comfortable, but shoes don’t work like that. Wright added that if someone can’t find boots that fit, the church members will help them find a pair afterward. “It’s a good feeling,” Clark said. “It makes you feel like you’re doing something right, and we’re happy to help.” VILLAGE OF

(Continued from Page 6) things work, and the need is in very high demand, unfortunately,” Clark said. “You know, people think of us as a very affluent community, but there are a lot of people who are less fortunate.” The church also hosts a community lunch every Wednesday at 10 a.m. The lunch is open to everyone, but it tends to provide food to the less fortunate and older resident who might not have the means of cooking for themselves. The Lake Placid Central School District participates in the Backpack Program, which provides school supplies and easy-to-prepare foods for children from financially troubled families. Other groups offer assistance to local residents who need a little extra help during the holidays and winter months, such as the Lake Placid Lodge No. 834 Free and Accepted Masons (clothing and shoes drop boxes), Lake Placid Ecumenical Food Pantry at the St. Agnes Church and the North Elba Christmas Fund. And it’s not just Lake Placid. According to John Bernardi, CEO of United Way of the Adirondack Region, 44 percent of homes in Essex County live below poverty levels. United Way is a nationally recognized nonprofit that raises funds for needed health and human service programs. After the 2017 clothing drive, the Adirondack Community Church had provided clothes to more than 175 families in the area.
