By TOM SALITSKY Staff Writer SARANAC LAKE — Paradoxically, it was Sue Patterson’s dislike for traditional New Year’s Eve celebrations that first brought the largest New Year’s Eve celebration the Tri-Lakes had ever seen to the area. “I’ve never enjoyed New Year’s Eve, particularly,” the First Night Saranac Lake co-founder and chair said. “I thought, ‘There must be other people that don’t particularly like New Year’s Eve.’” Patterson said she and her friend, Connie Landon, had attended a few First Night celebrations in Burlington, Vermont, and enjoyed them, but it was a long flight home from another destination that really got the ball rolling on the project. “To be honest, (Landon and I) had gone on vacation together, and we were flying back on a very long airplane flight,” Patterson said. “We started talking about (First Night) and thinking, ‘You know, there are so many musicians and people here with talent that are right here. We could do a First Night in Saranac Lake; why have to travel to Burlington?’ That’s where it started.” For those unfamiliar with the event, First Night is a family-oriented, alcohol-free celebration of the arts and the new year. For the past decade, Patterson and her team of volunteers have worked tirelessly securing venues, booking acts and raising funds in order to bring a wide variety of musical, comedic and theatrical acts to thousands of people. “There are a lot of pieces to the puzzle that come together,” she said. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s a team effort. ... We couldn’t do it without a really good team of people, and we’re always looking for more. “I just love seeing families and kids and teenagers
all enjoying the same music, or comedy, or whatever. It’s just good to see a lot of people saying, ‘Hi,’ to their neighbors and their friends.” First Night Saranac Lake, of course, is only one of the organizations Patterson makes time for. She chairs the North Country Heart Healthy Network, an organization that battles heart disease, and she sits on the Board of Directors of Saranac Lake Voluntary Health Association, an organization dedicated to providing necessary health services for people in the Saranac Lake school district. She is a member of the Franklin County Traffic Safety Board, volunteers with the Adirondack Mountain Club and founded the Adirondack Lawn Chair Ladies, a group of women whose antics have delighted attendees of the Winter Carnival parade for the past 21 years. “It’s so much fun to be in that parade,” she said. “It’s a ball.” Patterson grew up in Cleveland, Ohio but summered at her parents’ camp in Wanakena, where she fell in love with the beauty of the Adirondacks. After graduating from Ohio State, Patterson moved to Lake Placid before pursuing a master’s degree at Keene State College in Keene, New Hampshire. An avid canoer who has done several 90-Milers over the years, she moved to Saranac Lake in 1983. She retired from her position as a Franklin County Public Health Educator in July. Why does she give so much of her time and effort to others? “I think it’s important to give back to the community and the people,” she said. “You can’t just be somebody who takes all the time. You have to give back. “It’s great to give back. It’s good to give to the community. I don’t do it alone, make that clear; I’m part of a team.”

Lakeside House teaches skills to people with mental illness
By CHRIS KNIGHT Senior Staff Writer SARANAC LAKE — More than 200 people with severe mental illnesses have learned how to live independently since Lakeside House was established in 1978. Located in a five-bedroom home on Riverside Drive, the nonprofit is a supervised community residence for up to 10 people who’ve had mental illnesses serious enough that they haven’t been able to function independently yet. “They live here and we have staff on site 24 hours a day,” said Lakeside House Executive Director Sally Walrath. “We don’t do hands-on care but we provide a lot of supervision. Our goal is to identify what skills they’re lacking that we could put in place or help them to learn, so they could end up living independently. The goal is to really be a transitional place.” Lakeside House residents help run the “Another’s Treasure” used furniture store in downtown Saranac Lake. The agency also provides housing assistance to people who’ve been discharged from Lakeside House, and it provides temporary emergency housing for the homeless in a pair of respite apartments. Lakeside House is one of numerous community residences created in the 1970s as the state moved people out of its psychiatric hospitals. It was launched as a partnership between North Country Community College and St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center, and it originally was geared for the elderly population, Walrath explained. “The first people were all over 60 and 70, and they stayed until they died,” she said. “Since then, the state has really changed the emphasis and our average age has dropped (to the mid to late 40s). We have a lot of younger people, and they’re more capable of learning new skills and putting things in place, and there’s a lot more community services available once they’ve moved out.” Lakeside House staff provide residents with training on basic

There’s also medication management and working with your doctor, those sorts of things.” Community integration is another major focus of Lakeside House’s programs. A lot of mental illnesses are isolative, Walrath said, so it’s important for the residents to get out in the community, get to know people and learn to trust their environment. The “Another’s Treasure” store, which has been in business on Broadway since 2008, is a big part of that. “It gives them some work skills but the real idea is to be out in the community and not sit in the house all day,” Walrath said. “They work. One person goes in and

dusts twice a week, another cleans the windows. Other people like to do more interaction with the customers. A couple of the guys will do the pickups and deliveries.” Lakeside House also pursues volunteer opportunities for its residents. Its residents have volunteered at the Tri-Lakes Humane Society and the Saranac Lake Community Lunch Box program. One of its residents volunteered at the Saranac Lake Free Library and later got a job there.” Who are its residents and where are they from? Most are referred there from the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center, “and its catchment area is pretty much the entire North Country,” Walrath said. “We have a lot of local people who just come in and out, a lot of referrals through North Star, through their behavioral health program.” In addition to the site on (Continued on Page 10)

The Joshua Fund becomes national model for dog rescue
By ANTONIO OLIVERO Staff Writer LAKE PLACID — Nestled in the corner of Dan Bain’s office at the Adirondack Corner Store, a 5month-old lab named Lexie is moments away from being brought home by a woman named Alice who had adopted Lexie through The Joshua Fund. Lexie is more than 1,500 miles away from where she was rescued in Galveston, Texas. She sits calmly, feet away from where Bain, 46, and his husband Ken Hanauer, 43, conduct the bulk of their work for their non-profit dedicated to saving the lives of dogs. Lexie is also a world away from the condition she was in just weeks prior as a young puppy. Living the first few weeks of her life with her health deteriorating in the Texas town on the Gulf of Mexico, Lexie fought to survive as a stray and not become one of the approximately 10,000 dogs a day euthanized as a result of neglect, sickness and overpopulation in the United States. Thanks to The Joshua Fund, Lexie was rescued. But just two days after she was spayed, Lexie began to suffer from cluster seizures. After extensive testing that included a spinal tap, a MRI revealed Lexie had juvenile epilepsy. The diagnosis came thanks to the medical testing provided by The Joshua Fund and the medication Lexie is now on to treat the condition. So, shortly after 2 p.m. on Feb. 25, Lexie was healthy as ever as she went home with Alice. “She’s a perfect example of a great dog that would have been, more or less, just thrown into the landfill,” Bain said. Lexie is also a great example of a dog that represents all that The Joshua Fund does as a rescue service. Her journey also showcases how, in less than five years, the organization has become an altruistic enterprise that pairs perfectly with the sizable dog-loving community in the Adirondacks. The Lake Placid-based organi-

The first is financial assistance to local dog owners who can not afford the cost of medical expenses for dogs with life-threatening conditions. When the Joshua Fund began in 2011 after Bain and Hanauer moved to Upper Jay from Orange County, this was their first service. The inspiration was the recent passing of Bain and Hanauer’s yellow lab named Joshua, who the duo had rescued years prior. Despite a medical file six inches thick and a laundry list of ailments, Joshua joined the duo’s family of dogs as a 9 year old. After he died in 2011, Bain said he and Hanauer wanted to financially help other dogs in the area whose owners couldn’t afford to pay for life-threatening conditions. Ever since, The Joshua Fund has helped to raise money for these medical expenses by collecting money in Joshua Fund change

boxes located in approximately 20 stores around Lake Placid, and via their online efforts on Facebook through Youcaring.com. The Joshua Fund matches whatever total is in the boxes with an equal donation. About four years ago, The Joshua Fund merged its financial assistance program with its rescue efforts. The scope of the organization’s giving back expanded nationally in the process. “Since then this thing has gone from a little plastic container on our store counter to this ridiculous monster,” Bain said. “There’s got to be a couple hundred dogs here in Lake Placid that came from The Joshua Fund,” he added. “And it’s just snowballed (by) word of mouth.” The strategic growth of The Joshua Fund’s presence on Facebook has spearheaded the rescue service’s growth into one of the most impressive of communi(Continued on Page 10)

Riverside Drive, the agency currently oversees about 15 people in its supported housing program. “We provide a little bit of extra help,” Walrath said. “We do one or two checks a week ‘How are you doing? How are your meds?’ They’re all people who’ve moved out of here into their own housing.” Lakeside House gets most of its funding through Medicaid, which it bills for the skill services it provides, and through a room and board fee that most residents pay with Social Security. It also gets a block grant from the state to provide supportive housing and about $20,000 a year from the Franklin County Community Services Board. The latter was used to help fund a respite apartment. “We thought we’d set up this little apartment that our residents could use to practice,” Walrath
said. “Then we decided we don’t have a big need for it, so we opened it up for respite for anybody, which is how that became kind of an apartment for homeless. We don’t make any money on that, but there is a need for it. It’s busy all the time. We opened a second one and it’s kind of grown into its own thing.” Lakeside House is partnering with the Saranac Lake Ecumenical Council on a plan to provide a sixto eight-bedroom transitional housing center for homeless people in a house on River Street. The agency has a staff of 14, including residential counselors, its store employees and people who work in the residential housing program. It’s very rewarding work, Walrath said. “It’s nice to move beyond that stereotype and to get to know somebody as an individual,” she said. “It’s good entry level work to see if you like this kind of stuff. A lot of people will then go back
to school and get a social work degree or something like that.” The neighborhood location of Lakeside House is one of its biggest attributes, Walrath said. “It’s so much better than when you go down to the cities and you see agencies like ours all together in what they call mental health ghettos,” she said. “The services are close by but there’s no exposure for the residents and the community. “The value of this is to make that connection. When you sit down and talk to our residents, you’ll say, ‘I can really relate to these people. They’re no different than me.’ I know that helps me, and I know it helps our residents. They’re living in a beautiful little neighborhood. When my residents go out, they say hi to everybody and people say hi back to them. “As far as a sense of security and belonging, you can’t pay for that.”
The Joshua Fund
(Continued from Page 8) ties centered around dog rescue in the state, if not the country. The Joshua Fund currently has more than 100,000 likes on Facebook, as Bain says it’s the organization’s biggest source of fundraising. The organization’s ability to raise money through its international community online pairs with its carefully constructed rescue infrastructure spread across nearly half of the states in the U.S. Bain said the organization has rescued dogs from 22 different states. The Joshua Fund only rescues dogs from high-kill shelters and quarantines every dog at foster homes in the south for six to eight weeks before transporting them to Lake Placid. Bain said there are 60 dogs with The Joshua Fund currently, and the organization’s volunteer network across the country consists of 65 volunteers, ranging from drivers to up to 14 foster families per state. “This is so much bigger than me,” Bain said.
Eighty five percent of the dogs the organization rescues have heartworm. Several different kinds of skin conditions and other ailments are typical as well. The rescue network is strongest in Tennessee, the Carolinas and in Texas, where the organization’s efforts help, even if just a bit, in places like Houston, where dog overpopulation is at an epidemic level. Harris County, where Houston is located, only has one shelter, an animal control facility built 25 years ago to house 150 dogs, Bain said. Every day 80 dogs come into the facility, and some estimate that 1.2 million stray dogs live on the county’s streets. “This isn’t just Harris County, this is all over the country,” Bain said. “So that’s why we do what we do.” The organization receives about 10 applications per dog and turns down half of the applicants. Bain said 95 percent of dogs have homes when they arrive in Lake Placid.
When sitting in his office with Lexie that afternoon, Bain was prepping to have a group of 10 rescue dogs arrive in Lake Placid two days later. Nine already had future homes. Most were labs, the breed Bain fell in love with as a child. Ten of he and Hanauer’s dozen dogs are labs or lab mixes. Those 10 dogs were only able to make the trip to their new homes thanks to donations via the local boxes or from halfway around the world. And for every donation, whether a dollar or $22,500 (the largest received), Bain and Hanauer scribble handwritten thank you notes. Thousands are written each year to acknowledge the online community of more than 100,000 that have saved the lives of dogs like Lexie. “Without our donors, without or volunteers, without our fosters and without our adopters, this doesn’t work,” Bain said. “And the biggest is donors. Without donors, you can’t do anything.”
