LASTING CONSERVATION SINCE 1984

ANNUAL REPORT 2021

Mission

To forever conserve the forests, farmlands,

waters and wild places that advance the quality of life of our communities and the ecological integrity of the Adirondacks.

Vision

The Adirondacks thrive as a living model of how

people embrace and respect the natural world. Our communities benefit from wild lands, clean water, clean energy, working forests, family farms and outdoor recreation. The Adirondack Park—larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier and Grand Canyon national parks combined—grows ever more vital in a changing climate, inspiring new and diverse advocates for conservation.

We Value

LASTING CONSERVATION SINCE 1984

The power of the Adirondacks as a globally significant ecological refuge and model of how people and nature can thrive together. The promise of people working together to conserve and care for the lands and waters that in turn support healthy communities and livelihoods.

Conservation that endures: investment in projects that will provide benefits for generations, with recognition that each place is unique and each project requires its own strategy. Transparency, creativity and cooperation in our work with landowners, communities, state agencies and other partners to achieve the best conservation outcomes possible. Organizational excellence based on the competence and integrity of our board and staff, and the highest ethical standards of governance, financial management, land transactions and stewardship.

Diversity, equity and inclusion as essential to all aspects of conservation work, and to ensuring that the Adirondack Park welcomes and provides benefits for all people.

Widening the Circle Conservation has linked the needs of people and nature in the Adirondacks for more than 150 years. The Next Generation Council continues this work.

Dear Friends,

©Megan Zack Stevenson/Adirondack Land Trust

In August I met on the porch of the Adirondack Land Trust with a group of conservation advocates in their 20s and 30s. It was the first in-person meeting of our Next Generation Council, and I was inspired by their perspectives and their questions about how conservation can benefit our collective communities. It’ll be exciting to see where their interests lead them and the land trust. Dedicated individuals have worked to protect Adirondack lands and waters since 1870 — two years before establishment of the first national park. They saw that unbroken forests were critical to keeping the headwaters of the Hudson and other rivers flowing cold and clear. Conservation has linked the needs of people and nature in the Adirondacks for 150 years and counting. This place has grown only more important as a model of how people and nature can thrive together, and as a lifeboat for a diversity of species as the climate changes. We are honored to report on our efforts to continue this work, and to introduce some of the rising champions who will carry it forward (page 6). The NextGen Council will help us widen the circle of people engaged in Adirondack conservation and ensure that our work remains relevant for future generations. The goal is for those who follow to continue the effort to conserve open space, care for nature, and connect people with protected lands—long into the future. We are grateful to these young people for their time and guidance, and to all who work for the good of the Adirondacks.

The Year in Conservation:

Highlights 4

The Adirondack Land Trust is working to conserve our region’s vital natural safety net. Over the past year, generous supporters helped: • Purchase the last piece of unprotected shoreline on Thirteenth Lake, the largest water body in the 114,010-acre Siamese Pond Wilderness. Left: ©Steve Langdon; this page: ©Lisa Godfrey left, ©Anne Stuzin right

• Purchase a 60-acre inholding in the 91,854-acre Vanderwhacker Wild Forest. • Facilitate a community project at Cobble Hill, in Lake Placid, to secure hiking access across private land and allow people to enjoy trails with less impact. • Develop a GIS priority mapping system to identify places most in need of protection and to direct efforts and funds for lasting benefit. • Widen the circle of conservation through the Internship for the Future of the Adirondacks and Next Generation Council. • Work with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Essex County to identify farmlands in transition and help owners pass them to the next generation of farmers.

OTHER PROGRESS: After the close of the fiscal year, we transferred 250 acres on Moxham Mountain to the Forever Wild Forest Preserve. We are currently working with private landowners, communities and other partners on conservation of 12,676 acres at 30 sites. Left: Zoë Turner-Debs surveyed a land trust property in the town of Jay with the New York Flora Association as part of the 2021 Internship for the Future of the Adirondacks. LAND AND FOOD

Adirondack Farmland and Our Unique Local Food System by Holly Rippon-Butler

Holly Rippon-Butler is the Land Campaign Director for the National Young Farmers Coalition, owner of Farmers Cone Creamery, and an Adirondack Land Trust board member. Following is an excerpt from her remarks at our 2021 annual meeting. To read the full transcript, see adirondacklandtrust.org/Story/38

I

grew up on my family’s dairy farm in Schuylerville, just outside the Adirondack Park. My first experiences with the Adirondacks were hiking in the mountains and exploring lakes and streams. It wasn’t until I was older and living in the Champlain Valley that I began

to appreciate the rich agricultural landscape that is woven into the fabric of the park as well. In my role as an advocate with the National Young Farmers Coalition, I’ve been lucky to travel the country meeting farmers, talking with elected officials, and

working with land trusts. I’ve returned home from each trip to experience the farming community in the ADKs evolving as farms start, stop, persist, transition, and grow alongside the businesses that support them. I’ve become a small part of that in starting my ice cream business here. With this perspective, I believe this region is truly special for the strength of its tightly knit network of people producing high-quality products that are available largely within a few miles of where they’re grown. Something that captures this for me is the joy of eating a local burger after a long hike, with a fresh tomato and local cheese on top, on a bun baked that morning from grains grown within the park. I’ve come to see agricultural land here not just as a liminal area between mountains and water, but as an integral part of the landscape. No farmland, no post-hike burger. The fact that you can eat a local burger is fortunate, but it’s not fortuitous. It is the result of intentional labor, knowledge and risk taken on by a lot of people. Farming is a tricky business. The economics are tough and success is far from guaranteed. But the biggest challenge is land. Land access is critical for farmers but increasingly out of reach. As farmland values rise, farmers are competing with non-farming individuals. The Adirondacks has a lot of land—more than 58,000 acres of farmland according to the most Left: Holly Rippon-Butler making a delivery of ice cream from her creamery.

recent USDA census. But that doesn’t make it immune to larger trends. In fact, it is in many ways more vulnerable. As the climate crisis intensifies and the population grows, the Adirondacks has become a more desirable place to live. Nationally, we are in a moment of farm transition as the average age of farmers increases and millions of acres of land are expected to change hands in the next few decades. This presents an opportunity but also creates urgency. This is where organizations and individuals come in. We must work together, and it must start with land. Land trusts have real estate expertise, deep connections in farming communities, and access to public dollars. Land trusts around the country are stepping up to create solutions that respond to our environment, support the people caring for land, acknowledge and address the long history of landbased inequity in this country, and secure land tenure for farmers. I’m excited to be a part of this work with the Adirondack Land Trust. I hope you will join me in seeing yourselves as part of this land and food system—viewing ourselves as collective stewards of the Adirondacks, with farmland and those who steward it as a critical component. I hope you will also join me in believing in and supporting the power of land trusts and community organizations, and in engaging with policy advocacy to create a more just future. Most importantly, I hope you will join me in purchasing and celebrating local food, and enjoying that burger.

Volunteers of the Year Dan Spada and Ray Curran © Mary Thill/Adirondack Land Trust

Friends Ray Curran (right) and Dan Spada volunteer together in many endeavors, including the Northern Forest Atlas, Adirondack Botanical Society, Adirondack Orchid Survey, New York Flora Association and Northern Current music festival. Both were introduced to the Adirondacks as students at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, where they studied plant ecology and bryology with educator and conservationist Dr. Edwin H. Ketchledge. Later they worked together as scientists and leaders of the Adirondack Park Agency natural resource technical division. Ray and Dan have been a big help to the Adirondack Land Trust in many ways, especially during the COVID pandemic by planning and leading field trips that get people excited about conservation through knowledge of the Adirondack landscape. “To me it is so very important to connect people with ‘the place,’ to ensure long-lasting conservation and preservation,” Ray said. “I like to lend my technical knowledge to help people of all skill levels understand and appreciate nature in all its complexity and beauty. It’s very enjoyable for me and keeps my knowledge up to date, my mind and body young, as I interpret for others.” “We all develop skills throughout life; sharing them with others is socially important and personally and professionally satisfying,” Dan said. “Learning about the natural history of the land is an endlessly fascinating quest for understanding of the natural systems within which we are embedded.” Ray and Dan have also helped land trust staff better understand places they protect. With the Adirondack Botanical Society, they located a candidate for state champion white spruce on a conservation acquisition in the town of Jay. The finding has been submitted to New York State’s Big Tree Register. To learn about volunteer opportunities with the Adirondack Land Trust, please see adirondacklandtrust.org/About-Us/Volunteer.

Staff News Farewells and Welcomes

In 2021 we say a fond thank-you and farewell to two conservation staff members who are retiring.

We are also delighted to welcome a returning staff member and a new addition to our team.

Bill Brown

Chris Jage

Conservation Manager, outgoing

Conservation Program Director, 2021 forward

The Adirondacks have been the focus of Bill’s conservation work over 30 years. From the early days of stewarding alpine summits to encouraging college students at SUNY Potsdam to experience the wonders of sphagnum in a boreal bog, Bill appreciates the connection of people to the land. Much of that connection has been through the Adirondack Land Trust and the Adirondack Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, as part of a great conservation team. Bill looks forward to exploring (and learning from) the woods, waters and mountains with his wife, Katherine. He plans to stay involved in Adirondack conservation as a volunteer.

Chris brings a variety of skills to his role as leader of the land protection and stewardship teams, including woodworking—he carved our logo sign at Coon Mountain Preserve. Chris previously led land protection work for the Adirondack Chapter of the Nature Conservancy and the New Jersey Conservation Foundation. He has won awards for protection of more than 12,000 publicly accessible acres across South Jersey and for his ability to work with landowners and government agencies. Chris was a wilderness ranger with the Bureau of Land Management in Yuma, Arizona, and a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala.

Doug Munro Stewardship Manager, outgoing

Doug has worked in North Country conservation for almost 30 years, starting with Thousand Islands Land Trust and in the High Peaks as a Summit Steward. In 1997 he joined the Adirondack Land Trust and Adirondack Chapter of The Nature Conservancy as a Stewardship Assistant, later Stewardship Manager, working solely with the land trust for the last five years. Doug established deep relationships with volunteers and landowners through the care of private conservation lands. His photography skills also upgraded our image library. Doug volunteers with the Algonquinto-Adirondacks A2A Collaborative.

Derek Rogers Stewardship Manager, 2021 forward

Derek has worked for more than 15 years in conservation, beginning with The Nature Conservancy on Long Island, where he led the stewardship program for 11 years as a Preserves Director prior to relocating to the Adirondacks to work as Development Director at Champlain Area Trails. Derek is an accomplished birder and volunteers for several ornithological organizations. A SUNY Plattsburgh alumnus, he is thrilled to be back in the North Country working to conserve this dynamic landscape. He lives in Willsboro with his wife and two daughters.
