To forever conserve the forests, farmlands, waters and wild places that advance the quality of life of our communities and the ecological integrity of the Adirondacks.

Lasting Conservation is a Community Effort

Dear Friends,

A

s I look back on this summer, I remember a July afternoon at Three Sisters Preserve in Wilmington. I pedal along a dirt path, following my 28-year-old son, Sam, as he rides a three-wheeled adaptive mountain bike in a prone position. Sam rolls into a turn. His right hand turns a crank and his left guides the handlebars as he accelerates out of sight.

Photo left © Erika Bailey

This was our first mountain bike trip to the Adirondacks. Before Sam experienced a spinal injury in 2019, we hiked. That’s what had first brought me to the Adirondacks as a teen and kept me coming back every summer during college years, when I worked in the High Peaks Wilderness. I saw how immersion in nature improves our lives and how wild places sustain clean air and water. My wife, Abby, and I wanted our son to experience that too. We carried Sam up his first mountains, and before long he raced ahead. I joined the Adirondack Land Trust board in 2014 to give back to a place that gives us so much. I’ve learned that lasting conservation is a community effort, as illustrated on these pages. I’m constantly impressed by the skill, resourcefulness and commitment with which the staff and board advance our mission, and I’m honored to follow in Bill Paternotte’s footsteps as chair. With your support, as the Adirondack Land Trust conserves land, water, farms and wild places, we are also doing more than ever to create safe, accessible opportunities for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to enjoy nature. This is personal for me, and I bet it’s personal for you, too. One in four Americans has a disability. Even more face social or financial barriers that limit access to nature. If we haven’t lived with such challenges, odds are we love someone who has. Together, let’s make them feel welcome in the Adirondacks and valued as partners in conservation.

CONSERVATION AND RECREATION AREA 1

Lake Placid | THAT View! 187 acres purchased at the corner of Route 73 and the Adirondack Loj Road outside of Lake Placid that we will keep and manage as a conservation and recreation area. Our goals: maintaining the iconic view; keeping the forests intact, including 500 feet of wild shoreline on the Ausable River; conducting cultural due diligence (see story on pages 8-9); and developing a long-term management plan that includes grassland and forest stewardship and publicly accessible trails.

On the Land for Trails and Stewardship A ROUNDUP OF WHAT’S HAPPENING

WILMINGTON: Human-powered connections

LAKE PLACID: Trail improvements

Pull up a map of Wilmington, and the 1-mile connector trail through the Adirondack Land Trust’s 98-acre Three Sisters Preserve reveals a shortcut from village center to wild forests on Hardy Road—no car necessary. New signage and a trailhead kiosk were installed in 2023 to welcome mountain bikers, trail runners, and walkers. The nonprofit Barkeater Trails Alliance (BETA)—aided by the in-kind services of Tahawus Trails and dozens of volunteers— completed a new 3,700-foot downhill “flow” trail to offer more outdoor fun.

Cobble Hill is a small mountain with a big view, accessed by a 0.8-mile trail that leads hikers to a 2,343-foot summit overlooking downtown Lake Placid. With community partners, the Adirondack Land Trust secured $174,300 in grant funding for professional trail work to improve hiker access and safety while reducing impact to the surrounding forest. Work began in July 2023 and will continue through summer 2024.

WESTPORT: Volunteers protect wildflower habitat

Planning continues for future public access to the Adirondack Land Trust’s 238-acre Glenview Preserve. In the past year, we hosted two community meetings to discuss ideas and share conceptual plans for 3.4 miles of trails. An online survey garnered 75 responses about how people want to interact with nature at Glenview. For a Penn State research team, Glenview’s meadows, forests, and bog provided an opportunity to study the songs and gut microbiomes of warbler species.

Just after spring snowmelt, garlic mustard sprouts in the Champlain Valley foothills. The plant is endemic to Europe, but North American transplants exhaust water and nutrient supplies before wildflowers can bloom. This May, at the Adirondack Land Trust’s 378-acre preserve in Westport, volunteers navigated rocky terrain to remove garlic mustard and make way for purple trillium, bloodroot, yellow trout lily, and more Adirondack flora.

Cultural Due Diligence Investigating the human history of land to guide conservation work

By Maya Fuller 2023 Intern for the Future of the Adirondacks

T

he values statement that hangs on the wall at the Adirondack Land Trust acts as a daily reminder that how we approach our work is just as important as our mission. In this statement, diversity, equity, inclusion, and access are recognized as “essential to all aspects of conservation work, and to ensuring that the Adirondack Park welcomes and provides benefits for all people.” This summer, I was tasked with helping to actualize these values in all aspects of the land trust’s work. This resulted in the creation of a roadmap for cultural due diligence. Due diligence is a general term. Real estate due diligence, which includes property surveys and title reports, is a routine and required part of the process of land acquisition. Cultural due diligence involves investigation of the human history of the land. We see it as a moral and ethical responsibility.

Photo © Nancie Battaglia

Cultural due diligence asks: • Which properties are best suited for this type of research? • What resources do we use to find information? • How do we determine the validity of the information gathered? • How do we know when we’ve collected enough information to inform decisions? This process, though it can be broadly applied, will look different for every property. Bringing the past to light allows us to provide an honest accounting of history and has the potential to guide our land protection and stewardship decisions. We learned this summer, for instance, that a section of a newly acquired parcel was among the properties that abolitionist Gerrit Smith granted to African Americans in the 1800s. We will incorporate that information into how the land is managed and interpreted. I’m excited for this work to continue, and for the Adirondack Land Trust to be at the forefront of a conservation movement that protects outdoor spaces for the benefit of all and that considers the past—not just ownerships and ecology, but injustices and oral and social histories. From left to right: Adirondack Land Trust Stewardship & GIS Manager Becca Halter, Adirondack Diversity Initiative Executive Director Tiffany Rea-Fisher, and Maya Fuller review trail plans for Glenview.

A Promise Made to Both Farm and Fish

10

E

very day at Ben Wever Farm in Willsboro, Shaun Gillilland moves his herd of 60 Black Angus cattle from one grazing area to another. It keeps the cows fed and allows the grasses to regenerate and retain soil. His wife, Linda, does the same with their Katahdin sheep. Their work is accompanied by a soundtrack of moos and bleats and aided by a trio of farm dogs.

The Gillillands’ home and farmstand, where they sell USDA-inspected beef, lamb, and chicken, are set back 350 feet from Mountain View Drive. Two red barns and other agricultural accoutrements are part of the scene. Expansive fields that provide habitat for such grassland birds as eastern meadowlark stretch Conserving toward a skyline that frames Camel’s Hump in farmland Vermont. Their daughter, Chauntel, and son-in-law, and salmon Pierre-Luc Gélineau, live down the street and are a big part of this multigenerational farm operation. habitat Conserving 294 acres of farmland here is as much about preserving productive soils and a way of life as it is about preserving habitat for salmon. At the far edge of the fields, intact forests roughly 300 feet wide and more than two miles long help to cool the water in the Boquet River, which is important to coldwater fish. In Willsboro, where the Boquet joins Lake Champlain, each water body plays a role in sustaining landlocked Atlantic salmon, a native species on a long pathway to recovery since going locally extinct in the 1800s. As town supervisor, Shaun supported the removal of the Saw Mill Dam in 2015 to restore upstream spawning habitat. Photo © Nancie Battaglia

As private landowners, through a permanent conservation easement with the Adirondack Land Trust, the Gillillands are contributing to a much larger conservation story that integrates forest and freshwater habitat protection with local food production and a strong sense of place. The family is especially proud to be keeping a promise made to Ben Wever. When they purchased the land from him in 2006, they assured him it would stay in agriculture and continue a farming tradition that dates back to 1829. Clockwise from left: Shaun Gillilland, Pierre-Luc Gélineau, Chauntel Gillilland, and Linda Gillilland prepare for morning chores.

This project has been funded by The Nature Conservancy, in part through a grant award by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission to the New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission in partnership with the Lake Champlain Basin Program.

WHY WE GIVE

A lifetime close to nature inspires philanthropy

The Thomasset family, from right to left: Paul C., Paul B., Lindley, and Leland.

Paul Thomasset paddled around a bend in New Hampshire’s White River and saw Lindley Greenough waist-deep in the river, her canoe trapped under a log. “I sawed off a branch and we flirted a little bit,” he remembers. They married in 1971 and made a honeymoon visit to Big Moose Lake in the western Adirondacks. Five decades of camping, canoeing, and cross-country skiing in the region followed, creating lasting bonds for the couple and Paul’s three sons from a previous marriage. In 2023, the family returned to Big Moose Lake for Paul’s 90th birthday. The natural character of the lake remains intact, allowing their five grandchildren to enjoy clean waters and healthy forests, just as Paul and Lindley did 52 years ago. Paul and Lindley made a gift to the Adirondack Land Trust to support the purchase of 187 acres outside Lake Placid, knowing that plans to create opportunities for accessible recreation open to the public will honor their wishes and allow others to make memories in the Adirondacks. “The Adirondacks are not just a place you come to,” Paul says. “They are a place you have to give back to.”

IN THE FIELD Each summer the Adirondack Land Trust’s stewardship team travels to farms, forests, and waters across the region. Their task? To visit some special private lands and their owners, who partner with the Adirondack Land Trust to protect the places they love through conservation easements. Easements are voluntary, legal agreements between landowners and a land trust that permanently limit certain land uses to preserve water quality, farmland or other conservation values. Our commitment to these lands is renewed with each year’s visit. Currently this work encompasses:

> 54 conservation easements > 86 landowners > 16,514 acres in 7 counties

CONNECTING FOR CONSERVATION In 2021, the Adirondack Land Trust invited supporters of conservation in their 20s and 30s to form the Next Gen Council. A group of 19 volunteers who work in advocacy, recreation, science, law, and business now provide input on the Adirondack Land Trust’s work and host events to share the benefits of conservation. This year, the Next Gen Council convened for discussions on environmental justice, accessible outdoor recreation, inclusive conservation, and how these initiatives relate to land trust projects. And to bring people together to celebrate the Adirondacks, the Next Gen Council hosted Adirondack young professionals for a networking event in June and sponsored a Songs at Mirror Lake concert in Lake Placid in July. In October, the Next Gen headed to the Champlain Valley for a community-wide gathering at the Ausable Brewing Company in Keeseville featuring live music, kids’ activities, and microbrews. Cheers to our Next Gen volunteers!

THE ART OF WINTER Landscape photographer Manuel Palacios embraces the harsh and unforgiving conditions of winter to capture the textures, movements, and stillness of nature. In early February he shared tips with participants in two workshops hosted by the Adirondack Land Trust: one virtual (recording available on our YouTube channel), the other in the field on a perfectly snowy day. He is pictured here showing Natalie Gandolfo histogram settings to demonstrate what it means to “expose to the right” to compensate for the tendency of the camera’s light meter to underestimate the luminosity of winter. Participant Roman Kucharczyk captured this beautiful image (above right) of ice, snow, and branches during the field workshop.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR: Dave Winchell At this year’s annual meeting, held at Uihlein Farm in Lake Placid, we recognized Dave Winchell, of Harrietstown, as Adirondack Land Trust Volunteer of the Year. A retired public relations specialist with the state Department of Environmental Conservation, Dave helps out at Glenview Preserve, which is close to his home and near to his heart. Glenview, off State Route 86 between Saranac Lake and Paul Smiths, is best known for its sweeping vista of Whiteface Mountain and the McKenzie Range. Dave likes to point out that this 238-acre parcel features a variety of specialized habitats for birds, including grassland for Savannah sparrows, forest for magnolia warbler, and boreal bog for Canada jay. Dave has been setting and checking our trail cameras at Glenview. It can be tedious to sift through hundreds of images, but that’s what he does before delivering a perfectly organized thumb drive with videos and photos that bring the property to life through the critters that pass through. Highlights include a black bear family of three, a bull moose, white-tailed deer, and coyotes. See these wildlife moments and more on our YouTube channel.

YOUNG SHUTTERBUGS FOCUS THEIR LENSES ON NATURE We teamed up with Adirondack Life magazine to launch My Adirondacks, a project inviting young people to take pictures of the natural environment inside the Adirondack Park and tell us what they see. Those who submitted photos ranged in age from 5 to 16. Adirondack Life will feature some of the images in the November/December 2023 issue. “I like getting up close to nature,” says 6-year-old Marcelline Burcroff, who took this photo of wolf’s-milk slime.

REACHING OUT TO FARMLAND OWNERS

What is a conservation easement and how does it impact farm finances or day-to-day operations? Panelists answered those questions and more during two informational sessions hosted by the Adirondack Land Trust to help farmland owners plan for the future of their fields, pastures, and croplands. Both sessions were recorded and are available on the Adirondack Land Trust’s YouTube channel, along with a four-part series about farmland succession planning. If you own agricultural land, we invite you to check out the videos by scanning the QR code, or contact Adirondack Land Trust Farmland & Stewardship Specialist Aaron Thomas at (518) 576-2400 ext. 106 for more information about conservation options.

Where Are They Now? Checking in with alumni of the Adirondack Land Trust’s Internship for the Future of the Adirondacks, launched in 2020 with generous support from Barbara Glaser, Ed.D., and the late Clarence Petty with the assistance of Clarence’s son Ed. JESS GRANT (2020) is the Conservation Associate at the Adirondack Council, an environmental advocacy nonprofit, where she monitors state planning and management agencies. She volunteers with the Adirondack Land Trust’s Next Gen Council and the Boquet River Association while also pursuing a graduate certificate in forests and climate change at Oregon State University. ZOË TURNER-DEBS (2021) completed a Master of Forest Conservation at the University of Toronto in December 2022. Now a research assistant at the university’s Firelab, they investigate the success rate of aerial wildfire detection flights. Zoë also works with Not Far From the Tree, a nonprofit that picks fruit in urban spaces for donation to food banks. EMILY BURNS (2022) earned their B.S. in biology from St. Lawrence University in May 2023, then completed a summer internship with the St. Lawrence Land Trust. Now as the Conservation Coordinator for the Southeast Land Trust of New Hampshire, Emily develops maps and technical briefs for conservation projects.

MAYA FULLER (2023) focused on inclusive conservation for this year’s internship. They are now a senior at Syracuse University, completing a degree in sociology and geography with a minor in environment and society. Read Maya’s essay about one aspect of their work this summer on page 9.
