To forever conserve the forests, farmlands, waters and wild places that advance the quality of life of our communities and the ecological integrity of the Adirondacks.

Visi O n

The Adirondacks thrive as a living model of how people embrace and respect the natural world. Our communities benefit from wild lands, clean water, clean energy, working forests, family farms and outdoor recreation. The Adirondack Park — larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier and Grand Canyon national parks combined— grows ever more vital in a changing climate, inspiring new and diverse advocates for conservation.

We VAL ue

The power of the Adirondacks as a globally significant ecological refuge and model of how people and nature can thrive together. The promise of people working together to conserve and care for the lands and waters that in turn support healthy communities and livelihoods.

Diversity, equity and inclusion as essential to all aspects of conservation work, and to ensuring that the Adirondack Park welcomes and provides benefits for all people.

Conservation that endures: investment in projects that will provide benefits for generations, with recognition that each place is unique and each project requires its own strategy.

Transparency, creativity and cooperation in our work with landowners, communities, state agencies and other partners to achieve the best conservation outcomes possible.

Organizational excellence based on the competence and integrity of our board and staff, and the highest ethical standards of governance, financial management, land transactions and stewardship.

Working to make people and the planet healthier

Dear Friends,

In 1984, our founders perceived a need for a private land-saving group focused on places that make the Adirondack Park function not just as an intact ecosystem but as a landscape that supports communities. Since the beginning, the Adirondack Land Trust has worked to protect the farms, forests, waters and wild places that have the power to make people and the planet healthier.

Today the Adirondack Land Trust is at an inflection point.

Through a strategic planning process a few years ago, we concluded that, as one of the greatest conservation undertakings on Earth, the Adirondacks needs a land trust with the capacity to rise to this region’s promise, challenges and opportunities. We began to sharpen our focus and bolster our resources, including staffing and funding, to build a strong foundation to take Adirondack conservation the next level.

Bill

To date, we have protected 27,149 acres at 94 sites in 34 towns. We are now working to protect 16 farms, forests and wild places spanning 10,000 acres while advising a growing number of landowners on conservation options.

Of course it’s about more than acres. These are places that sustain us, providing clean water, trails, local food, climate protection and other benefits for people and wildlife.

As part of the Adirondack Land Trust extended family, your support inspires us to increase the scale and pace of forest, farmland and water conservation, to keep Adirondack communities and this landscape healthy, and to broaden conservation’s benefits for all. Thank you.

Save Land. Strengthen Communities.

The Adir O ndAC k PA rk is a six-million-acre blend of wild and peopled places, public and private lands, 85% of the designated Wilderness in the east, and 130,000 people living in 101 towns and villages. it’s a model of how people can thrive with nature, through economies tied to a healthy environment and communities that benefit from clean water, locally grown food, and proximity to wild places. Land protection has made all the difference. Thanks to 150 years of direct conservation action, the Adirondacks:

• Encompasses one of the largest intact temperate forests left on Earth

• Safeguards water quality along vast stretches of rivers, streams and lakes

• Has high potential to provide natural refuge as the climate changes

We have an obligation to past and future generations to conserve the places that keep the Adirondacks strong. We are currently working to protect 16 farms, forests and wild places spanning 10,000 acres. Over the past year, supporters and partners helped advance several projects, among them:

• Audrey and Chris Hyson donated 107 acres on Baxter Mountain, in the town of Keene, including a third of a mile on the East Branch of the Ausable River. We will pass their gift to New York State as an addition to the Forest Preserve.

• We added 250 acres on the south face of Moxham Mountain, in the town of Chester, to the Forest Preserve, making new recreational access possible.

• We reached out to 196 farmland owners in Essex County— where half of farmers are at retirement age and two thirds have no succession plan—to help plan the future of their lands, aided by a NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets Farmland Access Outreach Grant in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Essex County.

We are grateful to all who partner to protect treasured places that define the Adirondack landscape.

Every Acre Has a Story

by emily burns

2022 intern for the Future of the Adirondacks

This summer I had the privilege of delving into the 38-year history of the Adirondack Land Trust, to quantify progress made in protecting this extraordinary topography. Beyond this, I had the opportunity to work closely with a dedicated, experienced and sincere staff, and the chance to meet people from all over the Adirondack Park who are committed to this landscape and its communities.

Conservation of the Adirondacks is personal to me. I was born and raised within the Blue Line. These lakes and trees and mountains have witnessed the most important moments in my life, and without them I would not be the person I am today. I believe this is the beauty of the Adirondacks: the boundless love shared between the environment and the people who inhabit it, and the way we shape each other in meaningful ways. It is what makes the park and its tight-knit communities unlike any other place in the world.

This is why measuring conservation is much more than a collection of numbers on a page, or even the places those numbers represent. Within every acre, mile, even square inch protected, there is a promise of a brighter future for the Adirondacks and the people lucky enough to call it home.

See facing page for a sample of Emily’s findings on the community and conservation impact of 27,149 acres of Adirondack Land Trust projects. u

New Program for the Birds… and People

A D ir O n DAC k b ir

Every outdoor pursuit—hiking, rock climbing, paddling, skiing—requires gear. For birdwatching, it’s binoculars. But what if you’d just like to give birding a try? Or what if binoculars are beyond your budget?

Our new Adirondack Birding for All program helps would-be birders overcome these obstacles. Created to increase awareness about birds and their habitats, the program also makes birding accessible to more people. The Keene Valley Public Library and Saranac Lake Free Library began piloting the project this year, loaning backpacks stocked with binoculars and field guides.

“Birds are such an important aspect of our natural history,” said Derek Rogers, who launched the program in his role as stewardship manager for the Adirondack Land Trust. “I’ve been a dedicated birder for 20 years and a sentiment I hear regularly is, ‘I would love to try birding, but I don’t have a pair of binoculars.’ It’s exciting to break down that barrier so everyone can experience the joy of birding.”

A grant from Northern New York Audubon’s Joseph & Joan Cullman Conservation Foundation Program gave the program its initial lift. We believe it has the potential to soar. If you’d like to help us expand Birding for All to other libraries, please contact Derek at Derek.Rogers@adirondacklandtrust.org.

What Tim Taught Us

(L to R) Gary Randorf, Greenie Chase and Tim Barnett, charter members of Friends of the Bracken.

Our friend, mentor and former director Tim Barnett passed away August 29, 2022, at age 82. Tim’s love for the Adirondacks and its people was unbounded. He brought light and joy to conservation. His legacy is in the places he protected and the people he inspired. Tim guided our lives in many ways, some profound, some silly, all pure Tim:

• Wear a fern on your head to deter deerflies and as initiation into the unexclusive society Friends of the Bracken (see above)

• Pointy trees or round trees? How to distinguish lowland boreal from upland deciduous forest

• Take scientists into the field with you

• Hire good people and get out of their way

• Private lands and the people who care for them are and always will be an essential part of the Adirondack Park

In one of his last notes to our staff, Tim wrote, “The wonderful thing is I have no regrets and there’s very little else I can imagine that I wish I could’ve done. I suspect not many people can say that.”

Thank you, Tim.

Gifts in Tim’s memory will be listed in next year’s annual report.

it has been more than 30 years since the Adirondack Land Trust established Coon Mountain nature Preserve, in Westport. Summit views of Lake Champlain, the high Peaks and farm fields draw thousands of hikers each year. This 378-acre preserve is equally alluring to plant lovers, many of whom have contributed to a species list over the years.

Since the 1990s, naturalists and scientists have cataloged a compendium of wildflowers, shrubs, grasses, mosses and ferns. The first list, developed in 1996 by an expert self-taught botanist, reported 46 species. now, with new discoveries, including great spurred violet (Viola selkirkii) and several mosses added in 2022, the tally is 197.

some of the bragging rights of Coon Mountain’s flora:

• 29 species associated with calcium-rich soils, including maidenhair fern, early blue cohosh and toothwort

• 29 species associated with more southerly climates, including eastern hop hornbeam, bitternut hickory and box elder

To share your discoveries, at Coon Mountain Preserve or anywhere, try inaturalist, an online network of people sharing their nature findings. every observation can contribute to biodiversity science.

diversity, equity, inclusion and access are essential to strong and lasting conservation. embracing deiA is helping us engage new audiences, improve our processes, and discover new opportunities for programs and support. it is essential to our mission.

As part integrating deiA into our work, the staff and several members of the board participated in a work shop this spring with dr. david e. Jones, chief diversity officer with William Paterson University of new Jersey. dr. Jones is helping us start with an internal focus, to identify a role for everyone and to build a culture that encourages relationships across differences.

it is another step in strengthening our commitment to making land and its benefits available to more people, and to an Adirondacks that welcomes all.

Three Cheers FO r V OL un T eers

At this year’s annual meeting, held in north river, we gave a grateful shout-out to Jess Grant, of Willsboro, and Jon kislin, of Wilmington, who were named the 2022 Volunteers of the Year. Grant (at right), a former intern, was recognized for the key role she plays in building and co-leading the land trust’s next Gen Council. The next Gen Council engages a variety of individuals—primarily in their 20s and 30s—in environmental conservation.

kislin was recognized for pitching in at events and nature preserves. At the land trust’s Glenview nature Preserve, in harrietstown, he rolled up his sleeves to help remove what turned out to be 360 pounds of debris.

What if the end of life could sustain new life? Spirit Sanctuary is a three-acre conservation burial ground, in the town of essex, where the deceased become part of the forest. Spirit Sanctuary seeks to nourish the earth through natural burial as well as community by connecting people to land and the cycles of life.

The burial ground is on land owned and protected by the eddy Foundation. We were honored to become a conservation partner of Spirit Sanctuary this year, allowing those who name the Adirondack Land Trust in end-of-life financial planning to arrange burial there at a reduced rate.

For more information about making a planned gift to the Adirondack Land Trust, please contact kimberly Corwin-Gray, associate director of philanthropy, kimberly.gray@ adirondacklandtrust.org, (518) 576-2400 ext. 104.

To learn about Spirit Sanctuary and conservation burial, please see spiritsanctuaryny.org.

Board and Staff News

b OA r D: i ntroducing two new directors

brian Majeski has spent his career working in the musical instrument and professional audio industry, currently managing Music Trades, a specialized market research firm. He serves on the board of trustees at the Adirondack League Club, in Old Forge, and oversees the club’s Adirondack Fisheries Research Project. Brian’s deep affinity for the Adirondacks started with a father-son hike to the summit of Giant Mountain when he was 10 years old. He and his wife, Diane, call the Adirondacks “their preferred natural habitat.”

Cathy McGraw is a civic volunteer following a career in advertising and sales with Young & Rubicam and CBS Television Network, where she was an account executive and director of sales and planning. She has extensive board experience as the chair of the Lake Placid Institute and the Jupiter Island Club Library and a past co-chair of the Skidmore College Parents Association and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Martin County’s annual gala. She has been coming to Lake Placid for over 40 years since meeting her husband, Scott, drawn by four generations of family and friendship bonds.

s TAFF: Welcoming back a familiar face

Connie Prickett joined the staff in 2022 as director of communications. She has worked primarily in conservation for the past 25 years, communicating about the benefits of clean water, intact forests and local farms, and advocating for resources to protect them. She worked previously as vice president of communications and strategic initiatives for Adirondack Foundation and director of communications and community engagement for The Nature Conservancy’s Adirondack Chapter. She also led communications for the Adirondack Land Trust 1999–2017.
