THE ART OF

RECYCLED SHOES

Indigenous to Columbia and Panama, the Kuna people live in a matrilineal society in which a bridegroom must move in to his mother-in-law’s house and must work for his father-in-law. Women in the Kuna culture practice the art of making molas, a colorful textile art which uses the techniques of both appliqué and reverse appliqué. These intricately made panels are used to make the every day blouses and dresses worn by Kuna women. When a woman enters a new phase of her life, she makes a new mola and removes the previous one from her clothing. In addition to reflecting the maker’s artistic vision, molas are representative of a person’s stage in life and her relationship to and love for Mother Earth.

What do the hand made molas made by Kuna women have to do with shoes? In many cases, when a mola is removed from a blouse or dress, it is given to a shoe maker in Bogota, Columbia who re-uses these exquisite pieces of hand made art to make a pair of exceptionally made and long wearing shoes. Those shoes are, in turn, sold by The Aware Network, a partnership

between Jasmine Wallace and Daniel Rawson based in Byron Bay, Australia.

The concept of The

Aware Network is to

duce, recycle and re-use,

while helping to pass on their fortune through donations to a

charities,

including Cultural Survival

and the Beloved Narayani Foundation. Cultural Survival works to defend the rights of

indigenous people around the world, and the Beloved

Narayani Foundation works to teach that service to

others is a path to inner

peace and harmony. According to Jasmine Wallace, the goal of The Aware Network is to actively “…use our

values and apply it to the shoes on our streets, the clothes on our bodies, and the products in our homes.”

Each pair of pair of Mola Shoes is unique and

reflects a particular Kuna woman’s life stage and

relationship to her world at a particular time. No

two pairs are the same. Each pair of shoes is hand

made without the use of sweatshop labor and

without any animal products. The shoes are 100%

vegan. Mola Shoes are made to be exceptionally

long wearing, thus promoting sustainability. 10% of the profit from each pair is

given to charities and non-

profits.

his time last year Fran Drescher graced the cover of A Distinctive Style, it was our Holiday Issue and featured her inspiring story of cancer survival and her relentless mission to ensure every woman diagnosed with Cancer is diagnosed at stage one. Stage one cancers are the most curable. We promised Fran we'd follow up with her Cancer Schmancer Movement — and here we are!

Fran has always been a strong advocate for organic food when it comes to nutrition. She encourages us to use glass and ditch the plastic —and to never microwave plastic!

Fran said, "Chief among these is making changes that will ensure that everyone in this great country has access to quality, affordable medical care. When people don’t have health insurance, they can’t afford to be proactive, and take preventive health measures. So that’s the

number one thing we must do to make sure that people don’t have to wait until they’re so sick they go to the emergency room to see a doctor."

"We also have to find out what is causing all of this cancer, and eliminate it. I’m especially troubled when I meet young people who are fighting cancer. I am working to develop a new legislative initiative this year that will fund research for the environmental causes of cancer, and then educate us on how to avoid them."

Last year Fran took a four-country European tour after her appointment as Public Diplomacy Envoy for Women’s Health Issues. She visited Romania, Hungary, Poland, and Kosovo. "In Kosovo I got to visit with American troops, and I told them that even though they’re used to taking orders in their line of work, they shouldn’t do it in the doctor’s office! They need to be proactive medical consumers just like all of us!

In Bucharest, I got to flip a switch to turn a beautiful arch (like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris), PINK for breast cancer awareness month!

The next trip is still up in the air. I will be going to South Africa early next year to help highlight some great work that is being done caring for AIDS orphans," Fran shared.

E

very so often, an artistic concept emerges that combines multiple elements with a good dose of creativity that results

in images which become archetypal. Milan based photographer

and artist Guido Daniele began combining body painting with photography in the 1970s. His photographs of painted models

have graced the pages of high end European fashion magazines since 1990, when he was commissioned to paint a model to make her look like she was made of marble for a jewelry advertisement.

Ten years later, he was commissioned to paint the head of

an animal on a hand. The results were so good that he continued the work for the client until 2002. He has continued to

experiment with using hands and arms as a canvas for various animals, illustrations, and building since, culminating in his creation of images for AT&Ts international advertising campaign.

Mr. Daniele’s masterful application of theatrical makeup and

body paints re-create the heads of many animals, including

elephants, giraffes and eagles. His paintings of “handimals” have

also included fish, turtles snakes and alligators. However, he

In addition to his photographic work and work as a body and

hand painter, Mr.Daniels has a reputation as one of the premier

painters of murals and trompe l'oeil, a style originating during the Baroque period that creates the illusion of three dimensional images in murals and other flat art.

Her patience, perseverance, and understanding of animal

behavior create incredibly compelling photographs. The natural, relaxed state of the animals makes it seem as if she is not present behind the camera.

In addition to being a recognized expert in the field of zoology,

she has been recognized for her photographic excellence and has published both fiction and non-fiction books. She has exhibited her photographs in both Africa and

Italy. She was a finalist in the Shell Wildlife Photography competition in both 2006 and

2007. Her novel, A piedi nudi, received honors in the Edoardo Kihlgren

Opera Prima. Her book of photographs, Un giorno da leoni, is a visual exploration that considers what humans can learn from lion society. Her novel, A piedi nudi, is an exploration of her love of lions and her love of

Africa and considers the effects of bureaucratic inefficiency and a lack of funding for wildlife conservation.

In her many years in Africa, Ms. Soresina has seen a decline in wildlife

populations because of poaching, mismanagement, and habitat destruction. Financial interests of governments and private hunting

companies have made scientific management of wildlife populations difficult. Hunting quotas often are not adjusted for differing habitat

requirements and have resulted in over-hunting in some areas and habitat destruction from overpopulation in others. In some cases, monitored

wildlife preserves have been placed, according to human convenience rather than natural migration patterns. In one case, wildebeests spend seven months of the year in a wildlife preserve,

only to move into unprotected areas for five months of the year. However, she is very quick to

appreciate the protection that the wildlife areas offer the biological wealth of Africa. Without the preserves, the problem of wildlife decline would be much worse.

Ms. Soresina sees well managed hunting as a potential benefit to

wildlife levels. In some cases, overpopulation of a particular species can cause irreparable damage to the animalsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; habitat. Through managed

hunting, populations can maintain healthy levels that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cause permanent habitat damage that can result in the disappearance of a species in a particular area.

No conservation effort, according to her, can be successful unless it

works very closely with local communities. Conservation efforts must work to build economies and lessen the draw to poaching. Without economic opportunities, the probability of poaching as a livelihood, or hunting endangered species to fill basic food needs increase. Most current wildlife

protection and preservation efforts are now tied closely to economic

development plans that help lower the economic tension between people and wildlife. Ensuring that people living with the animals have a healthy, viable economy, helps reduce economic factors in both habitat and animal destruction.

Although Alessandra Soresinaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s initial project studying lions was even-

tually taken over by the University of Minnesota, she continues her work through writing, photography exhibitions, organizing wildlife photography

tours, and consulting on zoology and wildlife conservation. In addition to

research, writing and photography, she has collaborated with a number of television companies and producers, including the National Geographic Channel, Canale

5, LA7 and many other Italian television networks and producers. She has recently worked

on snow leopard studies in Nepal and has consulted on a recent initial wildlife survey of the Machangulo Peninsula and Maputo Special

Oprah’s Angel Network Awarded $50,000 Grant to The Hunger Project Oprah’s Angel Network has awarded a $50,000 grant to The Hunger Project (THP) to expand the organization’s community mobilization and leadership programs in Uganda. These programs enable rural communities to overcome their own hunger and poverty on a sustainable basis.

THP’s strategies support people in building self-reliant futures free from hunger and poverty.

In Africa, THP works in more than 2,000 villages in eight countries to empower rural women and men to end their own hunger and poverty. In Uganda, more than 180,000 people have participated in THP’s workshops.

Through THP’s unique methodology, communities become food secure; achieve access to healthcare, clean water and safe sanitation; halt the spread of diseases like HIV/AIDS; become literate and educate their children; access microfinance services; foster community cooperation; include women as full and equal community members; and transform mindsets of resignation and dependency into a “can-do” spirit.

With this grant, THP’s mobilization and leadership development programs will reach even more women and men. Women like Mukama Hajira of Iganga will be empowered to build better futures for themselves and their children.

Mukama realized that becoming literate would

be an important stepping stone to achieving self-reliance. Therefore, with THP’s support, she mobilized a group of women to participate in a literacy class. Once they became literate and numerate, she encouraged the group to take out a small loan through THP’s Microfinance Program. That was six years ago. Since then, Mukama has expanded her farm and started other income-generating businesses. Her growing income now allows her to send her children to school, feed her family and save for their future.

Rowing has given me something back that cancer has taken away. Rowing has made me see that there are no limits on what I can do. ~ Nellina Bartucci According to the American Cancer Society, there will be over 192,000 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed in America alone this year. While deaths related to breast cancer are going down, the incidence of breast cancer continues to rise. In short, more

and more women are learning to live with breast cancer – dayto-day, year-to-year.

Part of living with and overcoming cancer is engaging in exercise habits and surrounding oneself with encouraging support system. When Jenn Gibbons, a rowing coach, and Sue Ann Glaser, a breast cancer survivor, got together in 2007 and founded Recovery on Water (ROW), they created a powerful way for women to do just that.

Recovery on Water invites women to join rowing teams so they can strengthen their bodies, challenge their minds, and make lasting relationships. Rowing allows each participant to enjoy the benefits of cardio exercise and to work with others towards a common goal. t isn’t very often that a person affects music, musical instrument construction techniques, and is also a pioneering developer in completely new musical recording techniques. Les Paul, who died on August 12, 2009, was one of those rare people.

Les Paul was born Lester William Polsfuss on July 9, 1915 in Waukesha Wisconsin. He became interested in music at the age of eight, and went on to become a fine jazz guitarist. One of his often mentioned influences was Django Reinhardt, who famously learned to continue making music after losing the ability to use the third and fourth fingers on his left hand.

Paul is renowned for so many things, choosing one to start with is not easy. However, one of the most popular electric guitars carries his name: The Gibson Les Paul. Paul was not happy with some of the issues with early acoustic-electric guitars and began experimenting with solid body electric guitars. One of his first experiments, which he called “the log,” was a few 2x4s bolted to a guitar neck with an electric pickup attached under the string. To make the guitar look better, he sawed the sides off of an Epiphone guitar and glued those to the sides of the 2x4s. This solved the main problem he had with acoustic-electric guitars: Feedback. His early experimentation lead to a partnership with Gibson to build his signature guitars.

Les Paul was the pioneer in multi-track recording. Before his release of Lover (When You Need Me) in 1948, musicians would gather and play music live in a studio. Music was recorded using a single microphone on a single track. With this song, Paul recorded himself playing one guitar part.

He then would record himself playing another part while playing the previous acetate disk recording. By layering these sounds, some which were sped up or slowed down, he created the first multi-track recording which lead to public release. His interest in multi-track recording, combined with his partnering with diverse companies and people, lead to the development of modern multi-track recording facilities.

Les Paul met Mary Ford in 1945. They were married in 1949 and heir relationship and music are legendary. The two developed recording techniques that created an intimacy in sound that had never been heard before. Les Paul and Mary Ford had a number of radio and television programs together and brought their musical visions to millions.

Paul continued to make music until 2008. His influence and contribution to the music world is simply incalculable. A partial list of musicians expressing sorrow at his death include: Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, Jeff Beck, Slash, Angus Young, and Joe Satriani. Paul’s legacy, including his fascination with new sounds and passion for music, is one of the greatest gifts this brilliant musician and engineer could have left.
