FOREWORD As a knowledge discipline, I see architecture as a tool to conceive the development of mankind’s civilization. It is simply a non-textual ‘language’ consisting of built-environment vocabularies. Thus, learning architecture means learning about how to communicate. I find architecture interesting specifically when the act of design is aimed as an act of acquiring a deeper understanding of our social, cultural, even economical and political situations rather than the end-product itself. Within the spectrum of architecture & urbanism, I have faith in Jan Gehl’s concern for thinking about designing cities should be more about designing a people-friendly neighbourhood. I always try to seek a deeper understanding of the relationship from the smallest scale of built environments towards the city as a whole.

Precedent Study: Exploring the definitions of solid-void from SANAA’s Rolex Learning Centre.

Behavioral Pattern Analysis

ABSTRACT Our societies are still facing the chaotic, full of spectacle, digital media culture phenomenon where the ubiquitous production-consumption of information occur perpetually since the internet exists and most of them are likely to degrade our cities’ social qualities. A library typology is considerably a suitable case study as it is the most relevant regarding to the educational and socio-cultural values that it promotes to the society. Library is one of architectural artefacts which is undoubtedly influenced/affected by the developments of information technology. This project further tries to focus on the experience of content-discovery in the new library by exploring the possibilities of solid-void definitions that forms a series of interruptions that is able to enhance social interaction in the process of knowledge gathering and transferring processes. This aims to emphasize not only the stored information, but the people accessing those pieces of information themselves.

Read the full report here.

The library might then be redefined not merely a storage of information but also a place where social interaction needs to occur between people accessing that information, and social interaction might again become a tool for people to stay relevant and maintain balance with the existing digital media technologies.

DJATIROTO MASTERPLAN

2020 Comissioned Work Lumajang, East Java Team: Defry Agatha, Endy Prasetyo, Al Ambon Reynaldo

Status: Conceptual Design Contribution: -Design Analysis & Synthesis -Idea Illustrations

GENERAL IDEA The demand for an environmentally friendly and competitive industry over time has encouraged PTPN XI, one of the state companies in Indonesia, to come up with the idea of organizing the Jatiroto area which is well-known for its sugar production into an integrated area of recreation in Lumajang, East Java. The purpose of this project is to provide an overview and guidelines for the arrangement of the Jatiroto area in terms of technical, legal, economic, social and environmental aspects as a basis for making decisions on the development of an integrated area of agro-industry and Jatiroto heritage tourism. This masterplan project tries to focus on 4 designated spots located within a 7 km radius from the main sugar factory. The initial intervention is to enhance the quality of these places as more proper public spaces.

Room Unit Module

GENERAL IDEA Situated in a relatively rural setting south of Mt. Slamet, this project aims to be a retreat from the typical urban life for a small group of people. Due to the significant ratio between the site size and the space needs, this Villa tries to provide a range of different sizes and ambience spaces with specific experiences. Visitors are encouraged to re-connect with each other as well as with the surrounding landscape.

Key Design Principles from Christopher Alexander’s Pattern Language:

GENERAL IDEA Since the industrial revolution, the School had become an institution designed to drill people for the economy of the Machine Age which depends on a reliable and productive workforce through a series of classroom arrays. Nowadays, the architecture of schools has transformed from a highly controlled environment to instil discipline towards a more fluid learning experience. This allows the processes of acquiring knowledge to be extended beyond the classrooms towards the surrounding landscape especially with the ever-evolving digital technologies that help the processes.

Pattern no. 106: Positive Outdoor Space

Pattern no. 110: Main Entrance

The basic planning principle is to clearly define the boundaries between the school activity and the possibly public activities. As a public facility, it is important to consider the relationship between the students and the ‘mentors’ which in this case should not only the teachers and the parents, but also the society as a whole. Because eventually the knowledge and experience gained in schools will be used by the students to serve or simply function well in the society itself. The design program then tries to create a situation where the learning activities can occur comfortably without any disturbing noise caused by the main road activities also to allow the semi-public facilities to be accessed easily.

GENERAL IDEA Situated by the main road within a residential area, this project is a commercial complex based on the idea of exploring a Kampung archtype through various expression of height and various activities surrounding a single connecting courtyard. In contrast with the irregular-shaped site, the design uses a simple two-axis grid as the main ordering system which allows flexibility in programming with clear constraints.

W.I.P. HOTEL

Viewing Platform

Basically human civilization progresses through a large set of interrelated production & consumption activities that are used to fulfill the needs of those living and operating with it.

Leisure Space

The base of mankind’s advancement is their ability to transfer goods & knowledge. This process of producing and consuming goods or knowledge mostly have a great consequence towards the ecosystem. It is inevitable that the existence of human civilization is a disruption to the ecosystem itself. Yet, in order to evolve, humans must continue to disrupt the ecosystem.

Bedroom

Until this day, hotels served a crucial role as nodes in networks for the distribution of knowledge and goods. The Work in Progress (WIP) Hotel is a scaffolding-based structure attached to the outskirts of Shandong’s ex-mining sites. Due to the modular construction, the hotel is yet to be finished... somewhere around your child’s future.

#AdvancingCivilization #ContinuousDisruption #TransferofKnowledge #TransferofGoods

But rest assured, you can already have your leisure time here while the construction process is ongoing. At the meantime, you can experience the mesmerising view built by your irresponsible ancestor to this mother nature.

UNIVERS(C)ITY Status: Conceptual Design Contribution: -Project Leader -Design Idea & Post-Production

How might we design a city that is envisioned to be a centre of innovation? When it comes down to the driving factor, innovation basically is the sole manifestation of mankind’s fear and ambition to survive and evolve regardless of when the aftermaths are positive or negative. PROPOSITION Within the various spectrum of urbanism architecture, university typology seems to be the most closely related based on the scale and most importantly in terms of the available research and development facilities -- thus university is the predecessor of thev innovation ecosystem in the built environment. The key here is to think of composing the main components of a city’s anatomy through university programming as the core building blocks for city planning.

#University #Research&Development #UrbanLaboratory #Faculties #CampusCity #Researcher

In this case, the base building blocks inspired by the Barcelona superblock is used as a study case combined with the existing transit network in the area which allows a high-density urban fabric with great qualities of spaces for people.Through a series of R&D outposts spread all over the vibrant points of each sub-district area, the researchers can actually blend in as the city’s regular inhabitant, not merely come and go just for the sake of ‘working’ conventionally. Eventually, the urban fabric will have the research grounds as the new form of city centres.
