Rabbi Allen Schwartz Just Another Day At Work A long-anticipated surgical procedure approaches. Many preparations are made by family members to assure success, both before and after the procedure. Although everyone may be optimistic, a nervous undercurrent pervades the air.

The date arrives, and a team of surgeons, doctors, nurses, anesthesiologists, interns and orderlies are on hand to reduce the level of anxiety and to perform the procedure. They are all messengers from Hashem in their daily work. While it is a major event for the patient and his family, it’s just another day at work for all these messengers who do not experience intensity anywhere near that of the patient and his family.

The fact is, though, that the above situation is replicated more often than we think in many other professions. It may be just another day at work for a lawyer, but the person desperately seeking legal advice needs that lawyer to pay full attention to the details of his case. It may just be another day at work for a travel agent, but the person who urgently needs to travel to another country for a funeral wants the agent’s full attention and efforts.

We are all needed in various ways under many different circumstances. The phone rings, but we’re busy. Maybe we recognize the number, maybe we don’t. It could be a telemarketer; it could be a bothersome neighbor. It could also be someone who needs our assistance, counsel, or quick action. Take the call. Answer the phone. It may just be another call for you, but for someone else it may be a lifeline.

Congregation Ohab Zedek is intimately involved with people who need someone to pick up the phone right away. The shul puts the community’s needs above all else. The religious and spiritual needs of our congregants can be fulfilled through many forms of study on all levels and through numerous prayer times and chesed opportunities. It may seem like another day at work, but our office makes sure that the last minute school or job recommendation gets sent on time, that the loan needed for graduate school comes through, that the shiva home has a minyan, or that the rent is paid.

Once a year we gather to recognize the invaluable work of our members. This gathering tonight should inspire a commitment for all of us to raise awareness of the needs of others and to pick up the phone when it rings.

Our honorees this year are profoundly devoted to the needs of our community. Rabbi Akiva and Yael Willig exemplify religious and spiritual leadership. Tamar Davis demonstrates a keen awareness of the individual needs in our community. All three of them grew up in rabbinic homes and have suffused our shul with a love and devotion to K’Lal Yisrael. We honor them this year because they embody the mission of Ohab Zedek, which is to answer the call of anyone around them.

Robbie and Johanna Herskowitz, our couple of the year, have quietly risen to respond to the needs of our community. Countless people have been touched by their generosity, hospitality and quiet dignity. They are dear friends to many and, they too, are always available to answer the call and respond to any in need, great or small.

What a team we have! They are all messengers from Hashem to assure that His work will be done.

Rabbi Akiva Willig This coming Shabbos we read about the tragedy of the Korach rebellion. Fueled by jealousy and distrust, this episode ended with the instigators and their followers meeting an untimely death. Sefer Devarim opens with Moshe recounting some of the difficult episodes that transpired during the years of wandering in the desert. Moshe reminds them in a subtle and cryptic way of the sins they had committed. There the Korach episode is referenced in one word: ,urmj. According to the Chidushei Harim this was not only a geographical location, but also represented the very root of the sin. A rmj is translated as a courtyard. Traditionally numerous homes were built around an open courtyard. On Shabbos one is prohibited from carrying from one’s home to his neighbor’s or from inside to the outer courtyard. The Talmud Eiruvin (21b) records that Shlomo Hamelech, in the interest of fostering friendship and camaraderie, instituted an Eiruv, a way to unite the residents by allowing them to carry from one home to another. The sin of the Korach rebellion is referred to as Chatzerot, because without the unifying “eiruv” the word implies distance between individuals and the inability to interact with a spirit of harmony.

A Shul, very much like a courtyard, is a place that many people come together and interact. Individuals, each with their own ideas and opinions, leave their own homes to join together in their pursuit of Torah, Avoda and Gemmilut Chassadim. We blend and synthesize, as in fact we are, vzk vz ohchrg, joined by a virtual eiruv. Our Shul, led by Rabbi Allen Schwartz, follows the directive of Shlomo Hamelech, serving as a place where camaraderie allows for growth in the spiritual realm. We unite in our study of Torah, serving God in prayer, and assisting others in need. As our community celebrates this lovely evening, Yael & I are honored and humbled to accept your recognition. We join you in paying tribute to our fellow honorees, Robbie & Johanna Herskowitz and Tamar Davis, individuals for whom ,ucrg is a way of life. They concern themselves with the needs of others, in coordinating and organizing various projects dedicated to the Jewish community as a whole and the Ohab Zedek Community in particular. They are true models for us to learn from.

President Aaron Katz Welcome to our beloved OZ’s annual dinner! Tonight we come together to honor exemplary members of our community; to remind ourselves of the importance of the Shul in our lives, and to renew our commitment to it; and, of course, to enjoy the sheer pleasure of each other’s company on a special evening.

It is approximately three weeks since I assumed the role of President. I embark on this task with humility and with deep gratitude to my fellow current officers and our past officers, and especially my distinguished predecessor Meyer Muschel. Under the spiritual leadership of Rabbi Schwartz, I look forward to broadening the involvement of our members and trustees in the important and exciting challenge of taking the Shul from “strength to strength.”

This year’s honorees – each in their own way – represent the best qualities of our Shul and community: johanna and robert herskowitz are our couple of the year.

Johanna and Robbie embody that rare combination of style, grace and a sense of great fun, on the one hand, and true modesty and commitment to the community, on the other. They have imbued their children with this special blend of qualities. Johanna and Robbie lead effectively and modestly: whether hosting a weekly Gemara class, inspiring their children’s involvement in youth and teen programs, or broader community leadership. In accepting the honor this evening it was only the family’s love for our Shul and our community – and their desire to help – that overcame their natural reticence to being publicly acknowledged for their contributions, however substantial.

We are grateful and blessed to have Johanna and Robbie as leaders in the OZ community. rabbi and mrs. akiva willig are this year’s recipients of the nathan k. gross community service award.

While part of the OZ community for just two years, Yael and Rabbi Akiva Willig have already made a profound impact. Rabbi Willig holds the position of Assistant Rabbi at our Shul. Son of a distinguished Rabbinic family, he brings both warmth and great Torah erudition to his job. Rabbi Willig assists Rabbi Schwartz in serving all the different constituencies of our Shul. Yael Willig is from a family of Rabbinic and lay leaders in the local and broader Jewish communities. They are the proud parents of Eliyahu, Betzalel, Chana and Ella, who will no doubt carry on the family tradition of Jewish community service. tamar davis is this year’s recipient of the oz young leadership award.

It’s good to be young – and Tamar brings all that goodness to OZ. Possessed of (seemingly) inexhaustible energy and an infectious smile, Tamar shows the power of initiative. She came to OZ two years after college and didn’t wait to be asked to get involved; she jumped in and led. In 2010, she assumed the role of Trustee. This year, Tamar was elected a Vice President of the Shul. When she is not helping OZ or her fellow Jews, Tamar rollerblades by the Hudson River.

We are honored to pay tribute this evening to these very worthy people. We thank them for all they do for our Shul.

During the coming year, my fellow officers and I look forward to working with all of you OZers in continuing to make our Shul the best it can be.

Since its establishment, Congregation Ohab Zebek has provided its congregation with a sanctuary to learn about Jewish traditions and create a positive environment for youth in the community. The success of Congregation Ohab Zebek has grown and it is measured by the drive and dedication of all its members and leadership. I applaud the commitment and determination you have instilled in your congregation and the community, to help others and foster the humanitarian spirit.

You have instilled the moral and social teachings that encourage productivity in the members of the Jewish faith. It is my honor to join everyone in recognizing and thanking the congregation for all for their compassion and unwavering dedication to Congregation Ohab Zebek and its many members. Johanna & Robert Herskowitz

Johanna and Robbie are long time Upper West Siders who have made a big difference to the community at large, and, more recently, as members of Ohab Zedek.

They began attending OZ because they were looking for a good social environment for the eldest of their four children, who include Jacob (17), Alexander (15), Daniella (13), and Sophie (12).Their sons have attended the Teen Minyan since its inception. Their daughters have been active participants in the youth groups, first as attendees and then as group leaders.

Beyond the youth department, the Johanna & Robbie graciously host a class in their home led by Rabbi Schwartz every Tuesday night.

Each member of the Herskowitz family is involved with many community chesed projects. Those that are public include Johanna’s role as President of the Avital chapter of Emunah of America. Among the activities she has led on Emunah’s behalf are a Shavuot f lower sale, as well as the coordination and distribution of over 600 Mishloach Manot packages on Purim, throughout the Upper West Side and beyond. Johanna also volunteers at Manhattan Day School, where Daniella and Sophie are students, as well as for Kimpatorin Aid, which provides support for new mothers.

Robbie’s roots in the community stretch back to his grandparents, who moved to the Upper West Side after World War II. Robbie was born on the Upper West Side, but grew up in Riverdale and Miami Beach. He has been a private investor in real estate and venture capital, dating back to his high school days, when he began brokering toy close-outs to stores and f lea markets. After graduating from the University of Miami, where he majored in accounting, Robbie came to the Upper West Side in 1987 to help take care of his grandfather.

Johanna was born in Belgium and grew up in Los Angeles. She moved to New York to attend Barnard College, and then Cardozo Law School. She worked brief ly as an attorney. She now helps coordinate exhibitions on behalf of Guttmann Galleries, which is owned by her father, and specializes in 16th and 17th Century Dutch and Flemish artists.

max rosenbaum k�z Max Rosenbaum k�z was a man whose life was dedicated to his family, shul and community. In 1923, he married his childhood sweetheart, Ilse Rau. He learned the importance of Torah, Avodah and Gemilus Chasodim from his parents, Heinrich and Blanka Rosenbaum, in the Bavarian town of Fuerth.

Before the terror of Kristallnacht, Max was active in many organizations including the school, orphanage, and gemilus chesed charities.

After several months in Dachau, Max fortunately, was able to flee, first to London and then to the United States where his family started life anew in July of 1940 and joined Congregation Ohab Zedek. After establishing a business, he became an active member of OZ, serving as First Vice President during the fifties and later as Honorary Vice President. He dedicated himself with full strength to developing the congregation into a true Kehillah. On Acharon Shel Pesach, 1955, he delivered a message to the entire congregation, which resulted in the establishment of the Gemilus Chesed Fund. On this occasion, when he asked all those who agreed with this idea and wanted to share this noble responsibility to rise, the entire assemblage stood up as one. Over the years, this noble fund has helped countless individuals and families through very difficult periods in their lives and continues to do so to this very day. It is with profound gratitude that we continue to remember and pay tribute to Max Rosenbaum, k�z

maurice schauer k”z In the 1950’s Ohab Zedek was in its prime. The West Side of New York was a growing and flourishing Jewish Community. Post World War II America was realizing tremendous financial growth and prosperity. It was then that Maurice Schauer, a newlywed, young father and hard working businessman realized that although prosperity was widespread in the country, there were still people who were not blessed; those who were having a hard time adjusting to a new homeland, a new language, and a new freedom. Those were proud people, they were not about to beg or lose their pride by publicly asking their friends and neighbors for financial help. Maurice Schauer, together with Max Rosenbaum, founded the Gemilus Chesed Fund at Ohab Zedek.

This act of Tzedaka was the product of love and understanding; it was a dream that brought hope to many people. But it required a lot of work and devotion. A special man, Maurice opened his house Sunday mornings to parlor meetings to raise money for the cause. He enlisted the help of his wife and family to bake old world specialties to serve at these meetings. He recognized that the real Tzedaka that the Gemilus Chesed Fund performed would not perpetuate itself, if it was not continuously funded by those whom Hashem had blessed. He could not simply go to a fund raiser and expect that next year someone in the community would do the same.

Maurice Schauer was a true example of “Maaseh Avos Siman L’Banim”. His father, Henry Schauer, was the head of the Gemilus Chesed Fund in Pforzheim, Germany from where his family came. Abraham Gottleib, his father-in-law was very active in Ohab Zedek, from being a regular Baal Tefillah on the High Holy Days to lending the synagogue a Sefer Torah (which the family still keeps on permanent loan to the synagogue) he was very involved in the religious life of our congregation. Regina Gottleib, his mother-in-law, was an officer in our sisterhood for many years. Maurice Schauer was an active member of the congregation, a member of the Board of Trustees, an officer, and eventually Chairman of the Board of the Ohab Zedek Men’s Club.

It is only befitting that tonight we take the time to recognize in perpetuity a man who was very much a part of our past and whose ideas and concepts are in our present and our future, Maurice Schauer k”z.

nathan k. gross k�z Nathan K. Gross k�z was an active member of Ohab Zedek.

He served as President of the synagogue from 1953-1961, when Ohab Zedek was in its prime, and he was selected as Ohab Zedek’s Man of the Year in 1960.

He was known for his great reverence for community service and held in high esteem by those who dedicated their time to improving the lives of those around them. He believed that everyone has an obligation to serve his or her community and he felt strongly that putting something back into a community that gives so much is not only a responsibility, but a privilege.

The institution of the Nathan K. Gross Community Service Award has been a great source of gratification to his family and friends.

We salute Yael & Rabbi Akiva Willig by bestowing this award upon them tonight for they truly exemplify the communal ideal.

Congregation Ohab Zedek

Yael and Rabbi Akiva Willig The Willigs came to Ohab Zedek two years ago, when Rabbi Willig became Ohab Zedek’s Assistant Rabbi.

Rabbi Willig grew up in nearby Riverdale, where his father, Rabbi Mordechai Willig, has long been the Rabbi of the Young Israel. Yael grew up on the Upper West Side, just twelve blocks from OZ, and attended Manhattan Day School and Manhattan High School for Girls. While her family didn’t belong to OZ, Yael’s parents, Denise and George Karasick, hosted Rabbi Meir Goldwicht when he came to the Upper West Side to lecture at OZ. Yael and her family would come to OZ to hear the lectures.

Rabbi Willig is a graduate of Yeshiva College. He and Yael met and married when she was at Stern and he was studying at YU’s rabbinical school, Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary. After they both graduated, they went to live in Israel, where Rabbi Willig studied at the Mir Yeshiva.

When they decided to return to New York, Rabbi Willig learned about the job at OZ through the YU Rabbinic Placement Service. He was familiar with Rabbi Schwartz from summers at Camp Morasha, where Rabbi Schwartz was a camp Rabbi. Rabbi Willig was a camper and a student at the Kollel. (He also remembers watching Rabbi Schwartz playing baseball during those summers.)

Before coming to OZ, Rabbi Willig taught and lectured at New York area shuls, including The Jewish Center and the Young Israel of Riverdale.

Rabbi Willig works with Rabbi Schwartz to help create inspiring davening and learning experiences. He teaches two classes as part of the Tuesday Night Learning Program: a Women’s Chaburah and a Men’s Chaburah. He also leads a Shabbat afternoon Parsha Shiur, and a Wednesday night Gemara class.

Yael holds a Master’s in School Psychology from Touro College. She completed an internship at MDS, and, after taking some time off for her family, is now looking to re-enter the field.

The Willigs are the proud parents of Eliyahu, Betzalel, Chana and Ella, ages 7, 5, 3 and 9 months.

We are proud to honor Rabbi Akiva and Yael Willig tonight with the Nathan K. Gross Community Service Award.

Tamar Davis Tamar Davis remembers her first time at Ohab Zedek—a Friday night years ago when she came with friends to attend Kabbalat Shabbat services.

After that experience she was hooked. She moved to the Upper West Side two years after college, and became a regular at the Young Professionals Minyan. Over time, Tamar has become increasingly involved in the shul: she became a member of the Scholar-in-Residence Committee three years ago, and has been an OZ Trustee since 2010. She also assisted with the new membership drive last year.

Tamar credits her interest in shul affairs to the example set by her parents, Rabbi Edward and Meira Davis, spiritual leaders of the Young Israel of Hollywood/ Fort Lauderdale. Her parents were recently honored by their shul for their thirty years of service. (Tamar’s father was actually a Scholar in Residence at OZ two years ago.)

The third of nine children, Tamar attended her parents’ alma mater, Yeshiva University, graduating from Stern with a B.S. in Marketing. Four of her siblings also live in the New York area; the other four now live in Israel.

Israel is a great passion of Tamar’s. She visited the country often at an early age, with her parents when they went on sabbatical. She also spent a year studying at Midreshet Lindenbaum in Jerusalem after high school.

Tamar’s love for Israel carries over to her personal and professional activities.

She has worked for nearly eight years at Hadassah, the women’s organization that supports their hospital in Jerusalem. She was named Director of Annual Giving in 2011. Tamar also co-founded ViZion YLD, the young leadership division of the American Zionist Movement, which serves as a networking group for professionals at non-profits linked to Israeli and Jewish causes. She is a member of JNF’s Young Leadership Division.

Aside from her Israel related activities, Tamar has delivered her motivational lecture entitled, To Hear or Not to Hear: What Was the Question? to audiences in the US and Israel. In her spare time, she enjoys roller blading near the Hudson River.
