Subterranean Surprises Curious Caverns &

inter fun doesn’t have to be all about trudging through the snow, losing feeling in your fingertips, or finding the nearest ski hill. In fact, a visit to CAVE OF THE MOUNDS , one of our favorite National Natural Landmarks, means that you get to explore the boundless natural wonders below ground while staying perfectly dry and comfortable! Protected from the harsh elements above, the cave maintains a constant temperature of around 50 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, making it the perfect place to explore any time of the year. A source of education and exploration for over 80 years, this underground wonder has been intriguing visitors of all ages with the timeless beauty of the peaceful caverns, delicate stalactites and stalagmites, and colorful crystal formations. Guides call the dripping water “cave kisses” as they explain that each water drop has the potential to form

another crystal. It is a very slow process as each crystal can take hundreds of years to produce even a centimeter of growth. Meandering walkways and lighted paths safely lead amateur spelunkers through the cave’s interior, with interpretive signs and informative tour guides giving onlookers an up close and personal lesson in Wisconsin’s geology.

Cave of the Mounds is nestled in the earth under Brigham Farm, which was established by Ebenezer Brigham in 1828. Neither he nor the Indigenous populations before him knew of the cave’s existence. Since it does not have a natural entrance, this also means there are no bats in the cave. The cave was

discovered in 1939 during a routine quarry blast on the farm by workers in the area extracting gravel. The cave is still privately owned today by the Brigham family, whose main goal is to protect and preserve the cave for generations to come.

Exploring below the surface is just the start... Cave of the Mounds offers lots of above-ground, educational activities too! Learn about geodes and crack open your own geode to reveal a beautiful, crystalfilled treasure. A seasonal beer garden and outdoor picnic areas are available around the park to give you a place to sit and reflect on the beauty around you. Top off your visit at the Quarry’s Edge Mining Sluice to pan for your own collection of rocks and fossils. This is a year-round treasure to explore, so head to Blue Mounds to unplug with your family and friends and enjoy the peace IN earth!
