Cape Coral is called home by more than 200,000 residents putting us in the top 10 largest cities in the state. At 120-plus square miles, Cape Coral is the third largest incorporated land mass in Florida and boasts unique growth potential. In 2018, Forbes ranked Cape Coral as one of its fastest growing cities. With almost 400 miles of salt and freshwater canals, we are a Waterfront Wonderland. Learning to boat, fish and kayak is a great way to connect with nature and exercise in the fresh air. Within a few miles are world-famous beaches renowned for excellent shelling and sweeping sunsets.
Cape Coral takes great pride in providing all types of recreational programming. From football to baseball, bocce, sailing, kayaking and so much more!
The Cape is also home to the Cape Coral BMX Park, Wagging Tails Dog Park, Eagle Skate Park, Sunsplash Family Water Park, Gator Mike’s Family Fun Park and Seahawk Air Park. Cultural Park Theatre, Cape Coral Museum of History, the Brotherhood of Heroes Museum and Resource Center, and Cape Coral Art Studio are the nexus of our cultural hub. Events throughout the city engage the community and draw visitors from throughout the region.
Cape Coral takes its public safety seriously, evidenced by the phenomenal support of elected officials and residents. The sheriff, police and fire department staffs are some of the most highly trained in the nation and take a proactive approach to public safety making Cape Coral the second-safest city in Florida.
Cape Coral is a desirable location for business startups with tremendous future business growth opportunities waiting to be seized. Our community build-out is projected at 400,000 residents and Cape Coral recorded the third-highest population growth rate in the nation
during the past decade. Through economic development incentives available from the City of Cape Coral and Lee County, you owe it to yourself—and to your business—to find out about the advantages of relocating or launching your startup here.
Southwest Florida offers top-notch educational institutions. One member of the state House of Representatives and the state Senate, one U.S. representative and two U.S. senators represent the Cape.
Each of these elected leaders is accessible to residents, as are the public records of officials’ daily work on city, county, and state levels—of meetings, memos, emails, notes, and other correspondence relating to the business of government. THE RIGHT TIME, FOR YOUR PERFECT PLACE
CAPE CORAL’S greatest assetsideal climate, abundant waterfront, and low cost of living and doing business- are consistent factors fueling the city’s robust economic growth. In 2021, WalletHub named it the happiest city in Florida—based on 31 key indicators of happiness, ranging from the depression rate to incomegrowth rate and average leisure time spent per day—and number 31 in the nation.
Entrepreneurs and business owners want to invest in Southwest Florida’s robust quality of life and commercial environment. A healthy mix of home-based organizations, small businesses, light manufacturers, service industries, and national retailers and restaurants line busy corridors and contribute to the Cape’s hearty entrepreneurial spirit.
Business follows residential growth— and several new communities are popping up in the region. The largest city between Tampa and Miami, Cape Coral ranks No. 1 in fastest growing cities across the nation. - 20+ Fastest Growing Cities in US quickenloans.com
As the population expands, the demand for commercial services continues to grow to meet the needs of full-time residents. Commercial development typically follows behind residential development 12 to 18 months, and commercial and residential building permits continue to outpace previous years.
Mid-2021, the city of Cape Coral Economic Development Office (EDO) reported that more than 20 projects were set to break ground or had already opened that year.
Cape Coral is a 120-square-mile city—the third largest geographically in the state—but it is only about 50 percent built out. The population is expected to eventually reach 400,000-plus residents, so there is plenty of space and a continually expanding demographic base for goods and services. In 2019, Wallet Hub ranked Cape Coral as the No. 9 top city for rapid economic growth. Inc. magazine listed it among the Ten Best Cities for Starting a Business in 2020, ranking No. 10 for net business creation.

Those relocating to Cape Coral include millennials starting careers, growing young families, established professionals, well-heeled seasonal residents, and retirees hanging up their snow shovels.
Residents want to support the businesses in their community, and long-time Realtor Elmer Tabor, president of Wonderland Realty, says that is the foundation of his optimistic business outlook. “Because of our strong residential base, you can open up any kind of business you want and be successful,” he says. “We’ve got nothing but growth ahead of us.”
HOT SECTORS
Medical and biotech are two target sectors that the Cape Coral EDO is focusing on to continue raising services for residents’ wellbeing and to bring in well-paying jobs.
Cape Coral consistently ranks in the top 10 as a great city for retirement by several surveys, and it has a large veteran population. As a result, Cape Coral is a magnet for expanding medical and residential amenities catering to seniors.
In March 2021, ShorePoint Health ER & Urgent Care in Cape Coral opened in north Cape Coral, creating 50 new jobs and a full-service emergency room. It marked the beginning of a city-wide medical building boom that will include six new medical facilities by the end of this year.
Lee Health, Lee County’s hospital system, operates Cape Coral Hospital, the state-of-the-art Outpatient Center at Surfside, and the popular Healthy Life Center, where a menu of programs is expanding to meet community interest. Lee Health is investing nearly $150 million to expand Cape Coral Hospital and bring additional health care services to city residents. It plans to expand the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU), add six treatment bays and a 12-bed observation unit in the emergency department.
The 12-bed ICU expansion increases the number of available beds from 22 to 34. Lee Health has also purchased a 22.7-acre parcel of land in the city, which it anticipates using to build a new, separate health care facility. In
addition to the expansions, it looks to make Cape Coral Hospital has become a teaching hospital with an internal medicine residency program. The Surfside outpatient facility will also grow with a 14,000-square-foot expansion.
Another planned new building on the southeast corner of Palm Tree Boulevard and Cape Coral Parkway at Bimini Basin will include a large medical office footprint with apartment units above the medical space.
The group behind Fawcett Memorial Hospital in nearby Punta Gorda is building a new emergency room and urgent care clinic at the southwest corner of Pine Island Road and SW Third Place. It is expected to include a 10,850 square-foot freestanding emergency room with 11 examining rooms and about 40 employees.
Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute has two Cape Coral offices featuring on-site pathology, chemotherapy, pharmacy, care management, and clinical trials so residents get customized care in one location. The renowned institute exponentially outgrew one of its original clinics, from 10 chairs to 74, a few years ago.
Cape Coral is also an ideal fit for biotech research, development, and light manufacturing because there is plenty of room to grow. In addition to the health care and biotech and tech industries, the Cape Coral EDO’s target industries include logistics and distribution, manufacturing, and aviation and aerospace. The EDO has redoubled its efforts to bring in highpaying jobs in these sectors.
At the onset of the pandemic, Cape Coral commercial lighting firm Energy Harness, which employs 20 locally, gained attention with the development and distribution of the Energy Harness Active Airflow UV-C Fixture to circulate and clean indoor air. The units are now in use at schools, medical facilities, and other locations nationwide.
Due to the city’s unparalleled asset of more than 400 navigable miles of canals and waterways, marinebased goods and services are also a natural fit. Nor-Tech Hi-Performance Boats relocated its headquarters from

Two new commercial sectors surfaced in 2020 as investor John Moffat prepared to open his second “commercial flex” building of shared space for non-retail businesses, and Lee Snyder, Sr., headed forward on plans to build a new farmer’s market off Pine Island Road 55,000 square feet in size and $5 million in cost. Farmer Joe’s Fresh Market was expected to opened early 2022 with a $3 million kitchen to create graband-go bakery items and wholesome meals.
WHAT’S AHEAD?
Cape Coral has earned national accolades for its quality of life and business opportunities. U.S. News & World Report ranked Lee County second nationwide on its list of “The Best 25 Places People Are Moving to in 2019.” In addition, the waterfront
community consistently earns praise
continued from page 21 complex Palms of Cape Coral is taking shape at the corner of Nelson Road, and Gator Mike’s Family Fun Park is expanding with a new Mellow Mushroom restaurant franchise, concert stage, and drive-in movie theater.
Planning officials also look to the Burnt Store Road corridor heading north to Charlotte County for future restaurant and retail enterprises. Island Pearl, a mixed-use development, is underway at the northwest corner of Pine Island Road and Burnt Store Road.
Meanwhile, other major projects have already taken shape. The new 35,000-square-foot conference center at the waterfront Westin Cape Coral Resort at Marina Village is bringing in new visitors and shining a spotlight on Cape Coral. The resort underwent a $15 million renovation in 2021 that transformed guest accommodations and increased the number of units from 293 to 308.
In June 2021, the 109-room Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Cape Coral/ North Fort Myers opened on Old Pondella Road off Pine Island Road in northeast Cape.
Sky's the limit for entrepreneurs with passion and vision. Emerging business leaders can be the creators of Cape Coral.
WELCOME, VETERANS
Cape Coral welcomes US military veterans: It’s evident throughout the city – Southwest Florida’s first Purple Heart City. The Lee County V.A. Clinic and 15-acre Cape Coral Army Reserve Training Center are two obvious examples. Another is the Southwest Florida Military Museum & Library, featuring memorabilia and displays from every American war. After renting for several years, the local nonprofit Invest in America’s Veterans Foundation recently purchased the 29,848-square-feet building for $1.8 million. It has become a social hotspot with morning coffee klatches, lunches, speakers, outings, and regular live musical entertainment. The library and museum are located at 4820 Leonard Street in South Cape (239) 541-8704).
The Brotherhood of Heroes Resource Center & Museum explores the history of the Purple Heart medal and the United States armed forces from the Revolutionary War through the wars in the Middle East. It is home to the Disabled Veterans office and is dedicated to serving all veterans and first responders.
Invest in America’s Veterans Foundation assists veterans with free counseling, benefits advice and job placement assistance. And it’s certainly in the right locale. Florida ranks No. 1 in the nation for retired military veterans. The average veteran is 42 to 45 years old upon retirement from service; an estimated 260,000 veterans live in Southwest Florida.
Former military personnel seeking a new career can contact CareerSource Southwest Florida about various employment programs, targeted industries and job openings. Veterans are given priority for U.S. Department of Labor-funded programs. Visit CareerSource at 1020 Cultural Park Blvd., Cape Coral (239-673-8591).
Veterans seeking to start a business should consult the Florida Gulf Coast University Small Business Development Center’s Cape Coral office to find out about government aid and academic business programs designed specifically for vets. It is located in the same building as CareerSource at:
1020 Cultural Park Blvd. (239) 573-2737).
Veteran’s Clinic Creates Opportunities for Health Care
The Lee County V.A. Clinic has fueled growth in Northeast Cape Coral. The 220,000-square-foot clinic, near Diplomat Parkway and Corbett Road, serves approximately 1,000 veterans daily and employs 500 doctors, nurses, technicians, and other medical and support personnel. There are 430-plus acres of undeveloped land within a mile of the V.A. Clinic, mostly large parcels for big projects with some small parcels available for development. The nearby Cape Coral Army Reserve Training Center on 15 acres is another magnet for traffic. Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute has already been drawn here. A major component of this zone is the rising Liberty Village—a 131-bed assisted living facility and 320-unit apartment complex with retail.
Nearby Victory Park is currently under development to encompass a 125-room Wyndham Garden hotel, plus commercial space and 100,000 square feet of medical space and industrial facilities.
The Cape Coral EDO is focused on attracting compatible medicalrelated businesses, which often offer better-paying jobs and necessary services. Opportunities are available for medical clinics and offices, assisted-living facilities, patient/family support services and wellness providers, as well as light manufacturing and biotech companies.
“Taking care of baby boomers is an industry that’s surging nationwide,” says Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral President/CEO Donna Schuman Germain. AARP estimates that 10,000 boomers a day will be turning 65—retirement age—for the next 11 years.
“The supplementary growth in population and services in all industries that will likely occur is potentially phenomenal.”

Get started in the right direction
Cape Coral’s numeric network of streets, terraces, courts, and parkways can drive newcomers in circles—and into dead ends. Don’t let the street system drive you whacko. Instead, get a map and study it, and read through these basic guidelines to get you properly oriented.
The city is divided into northeast (NE), southeast (SE), southwest (SW) and northwest (NW) quadrants, with Santa Barbara Boulevard and Embers/Hancock Bridge parkways intersecting at the center. Road names are numbered and identified by quadrant, with the numbers rising the farther one travels away from the center.
East/west roads are named: Parkway, Street, Terrace, or Lane. North/south roads are named: Boulevard, Court, Place, or Avenue. They roughly follow a sequential pattern in each direction—for instance, SE First Avenue, SE First Place, SE Second Avenue, SE Second Place, and so forth.
Major east/west arteries include: Cape Coral Parkway, Veterans Memorial Parkway (both leading east to bridges that cross the Caloosahatchee River into Fort Myers), Kismet Parkway, Diplomat Parkway, and Pine Island Road. Major north/south roadways include Del Prado Boulevard, Santa Barbara Boulevard, and Chiquita Boulevard.
The city adopted this numbered system when it was incorporated in 1970. Before that, all of the city’s streets had names, ranging from Abacus Avenue to Zora Terrace. Some parts of the city retain their original names— notably around the Cape Coral Yacht Club neighborhood, the first developed part of the city. In that area, street names are often ordered alphabetically—for instance, Vendome Court, Venetian Court, Viking Court. A number of newer roads and communities have returned to using memorable street names.
For more details, pick up a map or street guide at the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral or an area business.
TIP OF THE DAY
Roads that dead-end at a canal often continue on the other side of the canal. The best way to avoid running into canal cut-offs is to stick to major roadways such as:
East/West Arteries:
• Cape Coral Parkway • Veterans Memorial Parkway
• Kismet Parkway
• Diplomat Parkway
• Pine Island Road
North/South Arteries:
• Del Prado Boulevard
• Santa Barbara Boulevard
• Chiquita Boulvard
SHOP DINE ENJOY
Cape Coral is exploding with new retail, restaurant, and nightlife opportunities from north to south.
Once upon a time, the epicenter of activity was situated in the southern region of Cape Coral, where streetscaping and new businesses made headlines and attracted attention. Nowadays, the county's largest city is realizing its potential in all directions, with a particular focus on the North Cape.
The bustling Pine Island Road corridor, also known as Route 78, boasts an ever-growing scene of development. New retail centers, hotels, commercial parks, office developments, and restaurants are springing up along the road and to its north along Kismet Parkway. Wicked Dolphin Rum Distillery and Gator Mike's Family Fun Park bring tourism to the area, supporting a variety of restaurants offering American, French, Italian, Cuban, Asian, and Peruvian cuisine. In early 2022, a vast permanent farmers market and kitchen opened east of Chiquita Boulevard.
Cape Coral has been steadily building its reputation as a foodie hotspot over the past decade. Renowned national chains have chosen the location for its energy, including an upcoming Mellow Mushroom franchise, joining the dining options already available at Gator Mike's. Independent restaurateurs have found a customer base eager for unique dining experiences—from the cafes and pizzerias of the SE 47th Terrace district to hidden treasures offering Australian-inspired healthy cuisine, Spanish tapas, Indian curry, and local seafood along main roads and side streets throughout the city.
A quintessential Cape dining experience often includes views of boats and water at the city's picturesque marinas. Ranging from a tiki bar and grill at the Yacht Club Community Park to gourmet establishments within the Westin Cape Coral at Marina Village and Cape Harbour marina, they offer diverse settings and cuisine.
During the day, Cape Coral's retail districts are bustling with shoppers searching for everything from souvenirs and resort wear to home décor and art. At night, breweries, bars, craft cocktail lounges, and dance halls keep the excitement alive, with special events adding to the city's festive atmosphere.
Every week, two of the area's only year-round farmers markets take place – one at The Mercola Market Campus every Tuesday; the other draws 10,000 people every Saturday to the South Cape at Club Square on SE 47th Terrace, featuring live entertainment and local goods. Both markets offer locally grown fruits and vegetables, seafood, local clams and shrimp, fresh baked goods, and tropical plants and trees.
Beyond regular events, Cape Coral hosts major annual festivals and community gatherings. The largest of all, the Holiday Festival of
Lights in early December, occurs in South Cape. Over 20,000 people attend for tree-lighting, photos with Santa, a 20-ton Snow Drift Slide, and other family-friendly holiday activities.
Art festivals, trolley crawls, martini competitions, bike nights, symphonies in the park, craft beer events, and holiday celebrations fill the calendar with social opportunities in Cape Coral, where there is always something happening. Refer to the calendar of events on page 26 to see what the city and Chamber of Commerce have planned for 2023.
Overall, the transformation is thrilling and eye-opening. Cape Coral has emerged as THE destination for fun, family-friendly events and lively nights out.

MAKING THE GRADE
Discover the Exciting Educational Landscape in Cape Coral: A Guide to Local Learning Opportunities
Cape Coral offers a vibrant educational environment, ensuring residents stay ahead of the curve. From enrolling children in school to advancing your professional expertise, you'll find a wealth of opportunities in and around the area.
The Lee County School District serves Cape Coral's youth with an impressive roster of nearly two dozen elementary, middle, and high schools. The district's innovative "school choice" program provides flexibility, enabling students and parents to select the school that best suits their needs within their zone. Most children attend their preferred school and can remain there until graduation or request a change.
Lee County School District also offers a virtual classroom experience from elementary through high school, known as the Lee Virtual School. This accredited institution, equivalent to traditional public schools, follows the same academic calendar.
Florida's school assessment program regularly awards top grades to many of Cape Coral's public schools. These scores, which help evaluate student achievement, are publicly available at LeeSchools.net.
For families with young toddlers, voluntary pre-kindergarten (VPK) programs are available through both the school system and private facilities. Parents of five-year-olds can apply for kindergarten classes. Cape Coral also boasts a variety of charter, private, and church-affiliated schools, offering an alternative educational approach. Funded through state and federal funds and grants, these schools require no tuition fees. A local board of directors sets policies, and one of the few admission requirements is Cape Coral residency. Parental
involvement is a key aspect of these schools, which also receive high grades in annual assessments.
Post-high school, Cape Coral Technical College provides a postsecondary college-level curriculum, with credit transferable to public state and community colleges. Operated by the Lee County School District, the college caters to approximately 400 fulltime students and offers affordable programs in business, health care, hospitality, and technology.

THE MAKING OF CAPE CORAL
From pioneers to paradise – a modern tale of success
Despite Cape Coral’s under-theradar existence in the annals of local history, few places have had so much happen so fast. The creation of the biggest city in Southwest Florida evolved quickly from wilderness to “Waterfront Wonderland” within the span of only six decades.
Well into the 20th century, the land now covered by neighborhoods and businesses was an isolated backcountry inhabited by cattle, citrus groves, and pioneers. As late as the 1920s, the federal government was awarding homesteaders 160 acres of free land for settling and improving it. In the early 1950s, scattered homesteads and large tracts of investor landholdings shared the region.
Leonard and Jack Rosen, brothers from Baltimore, Maryland, visited south Florida in 1957 in search of
new business prospects. When they discovered the vacant land in Cape Coral, they envisioned a new city, and bought 103 square miles at Redfish Point.
To make their dream a reality, the Rosens formed the Gulf American Land Corporation, and by 1959 their work was underway—clearing land and dredging miles of canals to fulfill their vision of creating the world’s largest waterfront community.
At the time, there was only one road in Cape Coral, Harney Point Road, today’s Del Prado Boulevard. The Rosens laid down two miles of Cape Coral Parkway starting at the Caloosahatchee River and marking the northern boundary of early development.
They built the first eight houses as models in 1958 along Riverside and Flamingo drives. (The earliest
roads have names; later roads were assigned numerical designations.) Kenny Schwartz gets credit for being the new city’s first resident after moving into his new home in 1958. Depending on size and details, prices ranged from $10,990 to $26,250 for those first dwellings.
Meanwhile, the Rosens developed one of the most elaborate home and lot sales practices ever seen. They promoted Cape Coral and its land internationally, often offering prospective buyers free trips from northern cities.
The Cape Coral Yacht and Racquet Club was a crucial part of those first sales efforts. After opening in 1962, it quickly became a major gathering place for community events, outdoor recreation, and sales presentations. The Cape Coral Gardens, including the Rose Garden, blossomed in 1962.
The Cape Coral Gardens was an elaborate attraction that featured live dolphin shows, a zoo, flocks of flamingos, a statuary garden, and the famous Waltzing Waters, a dazzling array of water fountains choreographed to music and lights. The gardens closed in 1970, and Tarpon Point Marina now occupies the site.
Airplanes were another important part of the early Cape Coral sales experience. Early flights would stop traffic to land on Coronado Parkway (the Cape’s third road) and Cape Coral Parkway. After the Cape Coral Bridge opened in 1964, most flights landed in Fort Myers.
Fewer than 300 people lived in Cape Coral in 1960, but the Rosens knew amenities would attract buyers. Their company helped subsidize the first store and offered financial support for two doctors, Theodore David and Robert Tate. The volunteer fire department organized in 1964, and the Gulf American Land Corporation picked up much of that tab, too.
By 1970, the population of Cape Coral had grown to 11,470, and residents voted to incorporate as a city. The first mayor was Paul Fickinger. The first police chief, Jim White, had three officers, a secretary, and two patrol cars.
In 1976, Cape Coral High School opened with 1,500 students. The hospital opened a year later—and the first patient arrived within a few days to have a fishhook removed.
The 1970s brought dramatic growth. By 1980, the population had tripled to 32,103, and at the turn of the century, 102,206 people lived in Cape Coral.
Today, its population is over 220,000, makes it Florida’s seventh most populated city and the third largest in land area. In the halfcentury since the Rosens bought those first tracts of wilderness, the north side of the Caloosahatchee had indeed become a modern “Waterfront Wonderland.”

GO COASTAL!
BOATING, KAYAKING AND FISHING IN CAPE CORAL
If you love boating and fishing, you’re in the right place.
The Caloosahatchee River, Pine Island Sound, and the Gulf of Mexico frame the Cape, and 400 miles of canals crisscross the city, so the coastal vibe is central to the city’s lifestyle.
Water sports are easily accessible and affordable, and chances are, you won’t have to go farther than your backyard to drop a line or crank up your boat.
Sailors, cruisers, powerboat buffs, and paddlers make Cape Coral their home and destination. The boat docks lining waterways give testament to the popularity of marine activities here. Landlubbers, too, enjoy getting out on the water for a daytrip, dining at waterfront restaurants, and taking in sunsets and other coastal pursuits.
Because our waters are shallow and navigating them can be tricky, many people prefer to leave the piloting and boat maintenance to professionals. Charter captains, fishing guides, and cruises are abundant, whether you’re looking for a day of fishing, a romantic evening sail, or a floating party.
If your idea of a perfect outing is by paddle, you’re in luck. Kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding are popular pastimes, thanks to the abundance of canals and back bays to explore.
Fishing enthusiasts take pleasure in the endless variety and challenge for both novices and seasoned anglers. Flats fishing offers opportunity for technical fishing challenges, but you can catch fish from your backyard canal or a waterfront park—what fisherman can resist casting in a line when the jack crevalle are stirring up the waters to a boil?
You can board your boat behind your house and head out to grass flats for redfish, show the grandkids how to catch a snapper by Shell Point, or hook up with buddies to charter a trip with a captain who knows the hot spots for snook, tarpon, redfish, and grouper in the vast estuarine environment around Cape Coral.
Cape Coral’s saltwater canals feed into the Caloosahatchee River and the Gulf of Mexico—some more directly than others. The freshwater system of canals, lakes, and waterways also offer plenty of recreation opportunities, and good fishing for bass, tilapia, Oscars, and other species.
The Caloosahatchee River is part of the Intracoastal Waterway, a federal navigation route that runs along the country’s Eastern Seaboard and crosses Florida through Lake Okeechobee and the Caloosahatchee. Boaters from all over the country cruise through
Cape Coral, and many stop for a few days or a few months.
Residents who don’t dock boats by their homes can choose from private or public marinas or opt for private dockominiums for dry storage. Wet slips are available for lease at two municipal facilities—the Cape Coral (Godman) Yacht Basin at the Yacht Club Community Park (temporarily closed) and at Rosen Park on Chantry Canal.
The city’s Marine Services Division maintains five paved public boat ramps with ample parking, the Chiquita Boat Lock and several unpaved ramps with limited parking and no amenities. At each of the paved ramps, boat-trailer parking costs $10 per day.
A discount program for residents provides 12-month parking for boat trailers for $50. A payment app allows users to pay for boat trailer parking from their smartphone, tablet, or computer in advance.
For information about leasing slips, the boat-trailer parking program, or other boater assistance, call the city’s harbormaster or assistant harbormaster at (239) 574-0809 or visit Parks & Recreation Marine Services Division at CapeCoral.net.

Hours of operation are 6 AM. to 10 PM. After hours, call the lock operator a half-hour before you plan to use it.
IF YOU PREFER TO PADDLE
If kayaking, canoeing, or paddleboarding is more your speed, you can rent boats and boards from various local outfitters. Or you can join a tour: Guides take paddling groups on adventures around Southwest Florida.
If you want to explore on your own, there are several options for launching in the river, canals, and Pine Island Sound. Paddlers can put in at municipal boat ramp facilities, including a number of saltwater options. At Four Mile Cove (east end of SE 23 Terrace), you can kayak the creeks or out to the river. You can access Matlacha Pass and the Calusa Blueway—a paddling trail that runs along coastal Southwest Florida from Sirenia Vista, an eight-acre environmental park (Ceitus Parkway and Old Burnt Store Road), with a kayak launch.
BEFORE YOU BOAT
Local waters can be tricky, with unexpected shallows. Before venturing out, be sure to obtain and study nautical charts, tide information, and required safety equipment. Being safe is a commonsense starting point for a perfect day on the water.
Boats must be registered within 30 days of purchase—whether they’re new or used. A registration application and title for any vessel with a motor must be filed before the boat can be used in state waters, with a few exceptions. Register at the Lee County Tax Collector’s office, which acts as an agent for the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for titling and registering watercraft.
If your boat is registered in another state, you may use it in Florida waters for 90 days before a Florida registration is required. That includes people vacationing here for longer than 90 days. Registration fees vary, depending on the size of the craft. Non-powered boats less than 16 feet in length need not be registered or titled.
Anyone born after Jan. 1, 1988, must complete an approved safety course and have a Boater Education
Identification Card to operate a boat with 10 horsepower or more. Temporary certificates are available for visitors. For more details, check with these resources:

BEFORE YOU CAST
Few places in North America offer such a wide variety of fishing options as Cape Coral and surrounding Lee County—from boat or shore and in fresh or saltwater. But there are
several things you need to know before you make your first cast.
A license is required for freshwater and saltwater fishing. Exceptions are for people younger than 16; Florida residents older than 65 or disabled; fishing from a for-hire vessel or a licensed pier; or a Florida resident in the U.S. armed services. Additional exemptions and information are at MyFWC.com.
A license is required for most people who are saltwater fishing from the shore—free for Florida residents except for a processing fee. Don’t make the mistake of fishing from a boat (that’s not a professionally operated fishing vessel) without a license; authorities could impound the craft and levy a fine.
Licenses, issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC), are available at:
• Lee County Tax Collector offices. Cape Coral location: 1039 SE Ninth Place; (239) 533-6000)
• Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission: MyFWC.com/license or (888) FISH-FLORIDA (347-4356)
• Select bait and tackle shops
• Retailers including Wal-Mart and Bass Pro Shops
Nonresident freshwater or saltwater licenses are available for three days, seven days, or a year. Fees are $17, $30, or $47, respectively. Residents pay $17 for an annual license. Additional fees are charged for permits to catch and keep snook, lobster, or tarpon.
Be sure to pick up or download a guide that shows fish species that you may catch and their legal size, catch-number limits, and seasons. The collecting of live shells is prohibited: In Lee County, which includes Cape Coral - Fort Myers Beach, Bonita Beach, Sanibel, and Captiva- collecting or keeping shells with live animals in them, such as conchs or whelks, is strictly prohibited. WELCOME TO
THE WILD SIDE
Here's Your Cape Coral Critter Crash Course
Ready for a rollicking introduction to your quirky Cape Coral neighbors? No, we're not talking about the human kind! Say hello to the diverse wildlife that thrives across the city, thanks to abundant parks, green spaces, waterways, and undeveloped land. Just remember to be a polite neighbor: don't feed or harass these fascinating creatures, and keep a respectful distance for everyone's safety
FEATHERED FRIENDS & BURROW BUDDIES
The white ibis is another local favorite. These long-legged birdies love to strut through neighborhoods, especially after rain, poking the ground with their curved, orange bills. Just don't mistake them for the cattle egret, snowy egret, or great egret cousins!
Cape Coral's official bird is the adorable Florida burrowing owl You'll often spot these pint-sized, long-legged cuties and their chicks keeping a curious eye on you from their burrows in vacant lots. Fun fact: Cape Coral is home to the largest burrowing owl population in Florida!
LAWN LURKERS
Meet the gopher tortoise, another underground dweller that shares its burrows with other critters. These high-domed, grass-munching turtles are like the couch potatoes of the reptile world—no swimming for them!

Alligators may not be everyone's cup of tea, but they're definitely part of the Southwest Florida experience. As long as you don't bother them, they'll generally leave you alone. However, if you're an avid golfer, keep an eye out on those sun-soaked greens!
Dolphins are the aquatic stars of Cape Coral, with the Atlantic bottlenose being the most common. You can spot these playful creatures from the shore or watch them show off in boat wakes. Just remember to give them their space—boating too close can harm both you and them.
Lastly, say hello to the gentle manatees, also known as "sea cows." These humongous but harmless creatures love to bask in warmer waters during colder months. Keep an eye out for a sudden puff of breath when they surface!
RESPECT THE NATIVES
These few simple guidelines can help protect local wildlife:
• Don’t feed wildlife. Wild animals don’t need our help and encouraging them to approach puts both human and animal at risk. Feeding an animal also can cause a loss in the ability to feed itself.
• Clean up fishing line and tackle. Getting tangled in monofilament or swallowing hooks kills marine life, pelicans, and wading birds.
• Enjoy animals from a distance. Approaching a wild animal can put you—and it—in harm’s way.
If you find an injured animal, the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) on Sanibel might be able to help.
