We inspire people to do things Everybody knows that Wisconsin Dells is a summer playground for friends, families and couples young and old. With so many things jammed between Memorial Day and Labor Day, there’s never a shortage of things to do. Believe it or not, though, many people actually prefer the winter months in the Dells over the crazy, hazy days of summer. It’s a little bit laid back. A little bit quieter. And a little less hectic. But still, there are countless things to see and do - indoors and out. In this issue of DELLS TRAVEL, we’ll introduce you to some of them. SUPPER CLUB TRADITION RUNS DEEP

ne of the finest examples of a Wisconsin supper club started out quite humbly. The year was 1943, and THE DEL-BAR stood as a lone sentry along a route between Wisconsin Dells and Baraboo, Wisconsin, thus the name. It was started by two gentlemen who converted a small cabin into a restaurant with just six tables. Today, the restaurant stands out along a busy stretch of road, smack dab in the heart of it all at 800 Wisconsin Dells Parkway. No longer a cabin, but a masterpiece of Prairie-style architecture, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright protégé James Dresser, the interior is equally stunning, with intimate spaces opening up to cathedral-like dining areas. Some of the most loyal diners are locals, ready ambassadors for visitors asking for a recommendation for a great steak or a truly authentic Old Fashioned. And then there are those who drive long distances to eat at Jimmy’s Del-Bar, as many still fondly refer to it.

Guests arrive as the doors open every day at 4:30 and start at the bar with a brandy old fashioned and nibble on Wisconsin cheeses - two supper club mandatories. The prime aged steaks, however, are the standout on the menu, with the panfried walleye a close second. A Wine Spectator-worthy wine list provides ample choices for perfect pairings. Desserts are decadent, ice cream drinks delicious, beyond resistance, really.

This is a place where you don’t rush through a meal, after all, that’s what the Wisconsin supper club experience is all about. That holds true whether it’s a special meal, the last night of your vacation, or an impromptu happy hour gathering just because.

While flattering comparisons to steakhouses in Chicago and New York are regularly made by visitors, the restaurant still stands out as one-of-a-kind. Because those places, as good as they are, simply don’t have the history and the tradition unique only to Del-Bar.

Oh boy is it full. Like you’ll be if you try any of their steaks, seafood, burgers, or pasta dishes. And especially if you top it off with a Granny Smith All American Sundae or the Ridiculously Awesome, Insanely Large, Chocolate Cake so aptly named because it’s ridiculously awesome. And Huge! Another favorite serving up American cuisine is B-LUX GRILL & BAR , located across the street from Noah’s Ark. All of their menu items are crafted from scratch. Try a signature burger or the Ellsworth Creamery Cheese Curds, or the mountainous Three Napkin Poutine. The kids will love the Salted caramel Popcorn Shake while you might opt to kick it up a notch with one of their hard shakes like Oreo Go Go made with Bailey’s.

eep on truckin’. We don’t hear that phrase much anymore, but it was an extremely popular 1960’s hippie saying. I guess we don’t say hippie much anymore either, do we? But that’s neither here nor there.

Grateful Shed Truckyard, or “The Shed,” as the locals call it, is an I-don’t-knowabout-you-but-I’m-enjoying-the-heck out-of-this-place kinda place. Its casual, carefree vibe makes every hour feel like happy hour.

The meaning of these three simple words, keep on truckin’, 60 years past their moment in the sun, still holds true today, though. They still reinforce the idea that people should follow their own groove and not allow anyone to change who they really are.

But here’s the problem; we don’t know what to call it. Is it a restaurant? A bar? A night club? A music venue? The answer is yes. It’s all that.
