Soul of the driftless coon valley & chaseburg
LOCAL FEATUREs: coon valley
Dave Hirsch, a person who believes in the power of building community from the inside out, saved the Sweet Valley Artisan (Erickson Garage) building and is now restoring another historic building downtown creating a fudge manufacturing space (yes, a real fudge factory!), retail, a community and visitor gathering space with ice cream, coffee, local shopping, and more.
chaseburg
Chaseburg is known as the winter wonderland in Vernon County and you can see for yourself by attending Trail Days in January. The Chaseburg Snowtrailers have been around since the 1970’s. Each year, a group of members groom many miles of trails that run through the ridges and valleys in our area. They hold Trail Days the 3rd weekend in January every year, which includes a poker run, dance, Chicken Q, and parade. Yes, a parade in January! The Snowtrailers also are very active in the community, giving money and support to many events.

Chaseburg is a little village with a big distinction. Because of its topography, it’s truly split-level. The two sections also represent the two points of settlement by early pioneers, with Norwegians in the valley and Germans on the ridge. Regardless of level, the village is also noted for its bountiful trout streams and excellent hunting opportunities, plus taverns and restaurants that offer riders, sportsmen, or any visitor great food and warm hospitality.
...IN CHASEBURG
There is always something going on in Chaseburg! Stop by the Tippy Toe Inn for a great breakfast or a mid-day burger. If you are still hungry, keep an eye out for signs of a Chaseburg Chicken Q, which happen nearly monthly and are regionally famous. Go for a nice walk on the 2 miles of nature trail along Coon Creek, see the old pioneer cemetery and pay respects for Henry Chase, the founder of the village. After all that eating and walking - why not stop for a haircut at Harry’s! It is a perfect gathering spot and Harry is a must see himself. He’s been cutting hair for about 70 years!

HUNTING
The forested hills and valleys of Vernon County are a perfect habitat for wildlife, and for avid hunters. This is a perfect place to match wits with white-tailed deer, wild turkey, or pheasant.
COON CREEK FISHERY AREA
The area consists of 225 acres located about 1 mile northeast of the Village of Coon Valley. The habitat consists of forest, grasslands, and a Class 1 trout stream. Deer, squirrels, wild turkeys, cottontail rabbits, wood ducks, and woodcock are game species that inhabit the area.
KICKAPOO VALLEY RESERVE
Hunting and trapping are allowed in the Kickapoo Valley Reserve. White-tailed deer may be hunted in archery and gun seasons. The Reserve has relatively low pressure for archery season, but has extensive use for rifle season, especially opening weekend. Turkey populations are very abundant on the Reserve, and it is open for spring and fall seasons. The Kickapoo Valley Reserve is a pheasant release site, a Wisconsin DNR license and pheasant stamp are required. The Reserve also offers numerous small game opportunities.
BIRDWATCHING
The topography and vegetation of the Driftless Wisconsin area and the proximity to the Mississippi River Flyway combine for unparalleled bird watching. During migration, over 40% of North America’s migrating birds use this route. You may have the good fortune to see great flocks of tundra swans or American white pelicans flying low above the river. With luck, in the Kickapoo Valley Reserve, you may spot a signature species such as an Acadian flycatcher, cerulean warbler, or Kentucky warbler. And when “everyday” sightings include bald eagles, sand hill cranes, redtail hawks, eastern bluebirds, indigo buntings, Baltimore orioles, rose-breasted grosbeaks, goldfinches, and ruby-throated hummingbirds, life is good.

ICE SKATING
Hang on to your stocking hats! The next thing you know, you may be twirling and swirling on ice skates at a few of our communities’ ice skating spots! Check out the Viroqua Area Community Arena, the local Park Bowl in Viroqua, and the new ice rink in Ontario under the Pavilion!
ICE CAVE HIKES - A GEOLOGICAL MASTERPIECE!
In the glorious wintertime, Kickapoo Valley Reserve’s beautiful ice cave formations are made by the freezing of water flowing from many small, hillside springs. Beginning during the post-glacial period over 10,000 years ago, the Reserve’s rock shelters, with their ice formations, were frequently used by humans as a source of life-saving protection against the elements. Tread gently, watch your step, and enjoy these ever changing geological masterpieces!

SNOWSHOEING
Intrepid hikers simply strap on the snowshoes when winter comes around. Within the Kickapoo Valley Reserve, snowshoe enthusiasts are allowed to snowshoe anywhere on the Reserve and are not limited to designated trails. (Snowshoers may not snowshoe on the designated snowmobile trail or on any cross-country ski tracks.) The ice caves on the Reserve are a must-see. At nearby Wildcat Mountain State Park, 17.5 miles of trails are designated for snowshoeing.
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING
The Kickapoo Valley Reserve maintains approximately ten miles of groomed cross-country ski trails, for both classic and skate skiing. Many enthusiasts use the Old Highway 131 Trail to enjoy the winter
solitude. Local residents do track their favorite routes into the backwoods, and visitors are welcome to use these trails, or “make their own tracks.” For safety reasons, skiers may not use the snowmobile trail. A candlelit ski is usually a part of the Reserve’s Winter Festival in January.
Wildcat Mountain State Park offers 7 miles of trails suitable for cross-country. And the trails don’t stop there!

Those brave enough will be rewarded with bluegill and crappie from inland lakes, and the Mississippi will yield walleye, northern pike, bass, and panfish. Blackhawk Island near De Soto and Goose Island near Stoddard are excellent spots. Sidie Hollow County Park Lake and Runge Hollow Lake also offer some great ice fishing action!
SNOWMOBILING
When conditions are right for people who love touring the gorgeous winter landscapes in the heart of the Driftless, a snowmobile is just the ticket. The county has many miles of pristine winter trails that take visitors through wild forests, ridge tops, and rolling hills.
