THe BeST PlaCe To Play In THe SnoW

The beautifully restored historic lodge at Granite Peak Ski Area, Wisconsin's premire downhill skiing destination.

Wausau has it all when it comes to Winter in Wisconsin.

W

inter recreation in Wisconsin is all about fun in the snow and the best place to enjoy your favorite winter-time activities is Wausau/Central Wisconsin! Centrally located in the state, the Wausau area is a convenient drive that lets you get out in the snow sooner to have the play time you deserve.

Winter Recreation Downhill Skiing Granite Peak Ski Area has quickly become Wisconsin’s premier ski destination and with recently added amenities, the 2011-12 season has a lot to offer skiers and snowboarders. Ranked number one for the best snowboard park in the Midwest by Transworld Snow Boarding Magazine, Granite Peak's six terrain parks feature challenging jumps, jibs and moguls. The historic chalet has been completely renovated to offer a new lounge area upstairs with great mountain views. Take a break from the slopes on the patio featuring heated seating areas, a fire ring, brat fry and live

entertainment every Saturday. The base village has newly paved pathways, expanded changing rooms and restrooms adding to the comfortable atmosphere. The tallest vertical drop in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula, Granite Peak has the ability to make snow early and keep it late with superior snow making equipment. There’s challenging and fun terrain for everyone on Granite Peak’s 74 runs. Choose from steep chutes at the top or Western-style, tree-lined runs meandering through gorgeous stands of sugar maples and red oaks. Granite Peak offers six terrain parks, novice and intermediate territory, all connecting to one of the seven user-friendly chairlifts.

Sylvan Hill Tubing Park Downhill excitement of a different kind can be found at Sylvan Hill Tubing Park. The park has the longest tubing runs in Wisconsin, featuring six chutes and two tow lines. There’s snow making equipment to keep the hill covered all season and a beautiful chalet with fireplace and snack bar. No need to bring your inner tube, they provide everything for you.

Cross-Country Skiing The Wausau Area has one of the premier cross-country skiing areas in the state. The Nine Mile Forest Recreation Area boasts 33km (20 miles) of picturesque scenery, lighted trails for nighttime skiing, and a comfortable chalet with rental equipment. There are three other cross-country skiing courses that accommodate all levels of expertise. Beginners will enjoy classical skiing across gently rolling terrain on the Ringle Trail. The Sylvan Hill/American Legion Trail has a popular in-town location. Intermediate skiers will enjoy the remote Big Eau Pleine Park Trail, a scenic trail along the Eau Pleine Reservoir, featuring rolling and wooded terrain.

Snowshoeing Snowshoeing is another great winter activity that can be found in the Wausau Area. Winding along the Eau Claire River, trails at the Dells of the Eau Claire Park lead snowshoers through magnificent rock formations and spectacular scenery. Rib Mountain State Park has a great trail system to explore and candle lit hikes on select weekends for fun nighttime experiences.

From left: In addition to the permanent collection, there’s always an interesting exhibition on display at the Woodson Art Museum. ■ The Grand Theater brings a season of great performances to its historic stage. ■ The Caroline S. Mark Gallery exhibits feature regional and local artists working in a variety of mediums. Next door at the Center for the Visual Arts, you'll find handmade artwork for purchase in the gift shop. ■ The Wausau area offers visitors plenty of shopping including quaint specialty shops and your favorite brands along with cafes, restaurants and entertainment.

Snowmobiling A haven for snowmobilers, Wausau/Central Wisconsin offers fantastic winter scenery, wooded areas, the Wisconsin River Valley and 780 miles of groomed trails. This expansive trail system is maintained by thirty snowmobile clubs and a fleet of 42 major pieces of grooming equipment to create one serious sledding destination. The area has a wonderful combination of the great outdoors with access to all the comforts of a metro setting.

Ice Fishing Every winter from December through March, our very own version of urban sprawl appears in the Wausau Area. As soon as the ice will support the weight, ice shanty villages rise on Lake Wausau in Rib Mountain and Schofield and on the Half Moon Lake in Mosinee to name a few. Some shanties are quite elaborate with all the comforts of home while others are temporary pop-up tents for a few hours of fishing. Strike out on your own or hire a guide service to provide all the gear.

Ice Skating The Wausau Area has three fantastic skating facilities that bring this favorite winter activity indoors. Each offers both skating and hockey rinks, rentals, and heated seating areas. There are also eleven outdoor rinks, including the 400 Block in downtown Wausau. This newly renovated park features a warming house, lights for nighttime skating, and skate rentals at Shepherd & Schaller Sporting Goods.

Winter Indoors arts and Culture Enjoy winter indoors by checking the pulse of the area’s thriving arts community. There are feature performances, touring exhibits, and popular artists all season. Check the complete calendar of events listing at www.visitwausau.com.

You can always count on a fascinating exhibition at the Woodson Art Museum. With a permanent collection of historic and contemporary paintings, graphics, and sculptures primarily focusing on birds, the museum is the ideal place to get in touch with art and nature. The children’s ArtPark has interactive games and projects to spur the creativity of younger museum-goers. Admission is always free! The Grand, the area’s performing arts center, features a season full of wonderful entertainment. The Grand Theater brings an incredible variety of performances to the stage, including Broadway shows, music, comedy, dance and family programs. The Center for the Visual Arts has rotating exhibits that showcase the works of local and regional artists in the Caroline S. Mark Gallery. Don’t forget a tour of the gift shop; it's just the place to find handmade creations. The Andrew Warren Historic District is named after a sawmill owner who in 1853 bought all the land now comprising the Wausau’s Eastside. Some splendid and some plain, the 62 buildings in the district were built between 1868 and 1934. The center piece of the district is the Cyrus Yawkey Home, and the home of the Marathon County Historical Museum. Step back in time and experience this mansion and its period furnishings all restored to their original grandeur. Across the street is the newly renovated Woodson History Center, with an exhibit featuring the Civil War and its impact on life in Marathon County.

Shopping Now is the perfect time to explore the great shopping districts in the Wausau Area for new winter fashions and gift-giving for the holidays. From national brands to local favorites, you’ll

find a diverse array of retail malls, antique stores and specialty shops. A walk through the River District is the perfect way to experience historic downtown Wausau. From beautiful jewelry, to custom artwork and delectable treats, Washington Square and Third Street abound with wonderful specialty shops. There are also over 65 national and regional stores and numerous restaurants at the Wausau Center Mall.

lowering the Cost of admission A trip to the Wausau Area is a great way to stretch your discretionary dollars. Not only is it centrally located in Wisconsin (making it oh so it’s easy to get to), now when you can take a long weekend, you can save money by booking a special lodging package called “Three Day Weekend.” It’s simple. When you stay Friday and Saturday at the regular rate, Sunday night is free. With a three day weekend, it’s like getting two Saturdays for the price of one. Go to www.visitwausau.com to find a list of participating hotels. Request your free copy of the Official Wausau/ Central Wisconsin Visitors Magazine and start planning your get-a-way today!
