INCREDIBLE BEGINNING… If January and February have set the pace for 2014, it appears it will be a busy year and a year with changes! The January board meeting is a time for the board to review the Chamber’s program of work, new board members were welcomed and the programs are in place. Upon review of one of our long time events, our eighteen member board of prominent business leaders made the decision based on facts of previous years, to no longer continue the Polly Crockett & Tennessee History Festival. One of my favorite quotes comes to mind as I express the gratitude of the Chamber Staff, Board of Directors and Ambassadors for the commitment to the Polly Crockett & Tennessee History Festival. After 32 years in Franklin County; the Chamber the festival will end as of September 22, 2013.
“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” Winston Churchill
Your membership investment also provided the opportunity for the following:
The festival has inspired many individuals to volunteer which has been a tremendous part of the success of the festival in the past. However, with the declining number of original crafters and increased amount of time required to plan and implement the festival, our board of directors decided unanimously on January 27, 2014 to discontinue the festival and redirect Chamber resources more appropriately.
So many, gave so much, for so long and once again, thank each supporter for their contribution to the Polly Crockett & Tennessee History Festival for the past 32 years!
One of the new projects our board chose to implement is a Career Quest featured in this edition. Career Quest will meet the needs of our youth and the request of the Chamber Manufacturer’s Roundtable Ceo’s to implement a program of career choices assisting with developing a better workforce. I have the opportunity to schedule required manufacturers quarterly meetings for Workers Employment Outreach and this program fits the WEO goals. The remainder of the year CEO’s select topics and speakers are secured. Education programs in this years Program of Work are:
Participation in the State of Tennessee Retire TN program . In January, I attended the Ideal Living Trade Show in Chicago with the State team selling the state of Tennessee. Our next show is in March in Philadelphia. The team will be selling the state of Tennessee and I represent Franklin County as one of sixteen counties in Tennessee’s best places to retire! Chamber hosts Career Quest
for county’s middle school eighth graders… Chamber Executive Judy Taylor Professionals, Officials and Manufacturer Representatives join forces with educators to launch a program to instill in our youth, “Your Life, Your Choice”. Manufacturers attending monthly luncheons at the Chamber consistently discuss workforce issues and various ways to inform our youth of their choices. As a result of these discussions the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director met with key leaders and organized a Career Quest at North Middle School. Middle school students from North, South, Huntland and Good Shepherd participated in the Chamber’s first Career Quest. The Quest provided a professional in their top three choices. The Chamber compiled a data base with their choices and matched each student with a professional in their chosen fields. Each professional presented a course of study to attain those positions, answered numerous questions and emphasized the endless possibilities available to them following high school. Career Quest speakers informed students that furthering their education is important to obtain a job in most fields. Among the choices presented were attending a technical school or a four-year university. Ivan Jones, Director of Tennessee College of Applied Technology-Shelbyville, guest speaker, selected a student to demonstrate various careers by supplying the student with the equipment used in the positions. Mr. Jones presented various courses available, opportunities to be certified with a skill, and the many doors the certifications and diplomas can open as they begin their journey. Chamber President Dave Van Buskirk presented the importance of record keeping. Each student was presented a Career Quest Portfolio to assist in keeping accurate records as they enter high school. Mr. Van Buskirk also reminded the four hundred eighth graders to study hard because someday they will be taking care of him! Mayor Richard Stewart spoke on Synergy and the importance of working as a team. Mayor Stewart provided the definition of synergy and had the four separate schools revved up and chanting SYNERGY! Stanley Bean Principal of North Middle School was instrumental in organizing class rooms, gym, and cafeteria around sixth and seventh grade students for every cluster. Principals, guidance counselors and English teachers assisted students in the process of selecting their top three career choices. Every student was matched with appropriate professionals by the Chamber of Commerce. Nissan’s engineers presented to students in North’s gym, various opportunities offered at their facility. As an example, they explained what tool
and die makers do at the plant, which includes all of the following: die assembly and inspection, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) programming, manual machining, CNC machining, high-speed machining, tig welding, hand grinding, precision measuring, casting die, heat treatment and die spotting. These Nissan professionals, Kelli Klidzejs, Adam Cook & Tim Rusk added that engineers also do important work at the plant and explained that one type of engineer that Nissan employs is a safety and ergonomics engineer. It was mentioned that this person identifies, investigates and offers recommendations for unsafe conditions, behaviors and poor ergonomics, and part of the job entails reviewing equipment and processes for safety issues and assisting with any work-related injuries and illnesses. The AEDC STEM Planetarium was set up by Arnold Engineering Air Force Base Jere Matte, STEM Coordinator and Mike Cunningham ATA and Chamber Board Member in the gymnasium. Those selecting Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Technology were provided information and a tour of the planetarium. In addition to these jobs, medical professionals from Southern Tennessee Medical Center had the highest number of students, 260 in their Career Cluster. Heather Harper COO, Alisha Mcinturff, Roy Shed, Linda Tipps, provided each student with information on the various jobs in the medical industry. John Howard, administrative director of Medical Imaging at STMC/EHH, spoke on radiology and sonography. Dr. Cory Glenn local dentist provided an overview of requirements in dental field. Sgt. Chris Guess guest speaker and presenter had the second largest group, 130 students. Other careers and presenters were: AGRICULUTURE: Ed Burns ARCHITECTURE/CONSTRUCTION: Willie Womack ARTS/AUDIO/VIDEO/TECHNOLOGY/ COMMUNICATIONS: Greg Roberson, FCHS & Kyle Thigpen, Nissan-Smyrna BUSINESS/BANKING/FINANCE/ MARKETING/SALES/SERVICE: Burl Hiles and Hampton Bourne COSMETOLOGY: Lyla Stubblefield EDUCATION: Susan Carver INDUSTRIAL MAINTENANCE: David Sliger & Robby Thompson, Nissan North America, Decherd MANUFACTURING: Jimmy Davis, Shaw Industries
Chamber President Dave Van Buskirk MILITARY: SSgt Major Larry Williams, US Army (Retired) PERSONAL TRAINER: Bunny Hawkersmith SOCIAL SERVICE: Michelle Hill Judy Taylor, Chamber Executive Director, thanked all those involved in organizing and professionals contributing their time. She also commented on the importance of the business community being involved with our youth. Dave VanBuskirk, President and our entire board is committed to building a better workforce and providing every opportunity to support local educators. Edgar Kane, Nissan North America, Decherd and Manufacturer’s Chairman stated the manufacturers of Franklin County believe this type activity greatly assists in a better prepared workforce. The roundtable also proves the Senior Mock Interviews annually in a partnership. Most important is making our youth aware of all opportunities, thus the theme, “Your Life, Your Choice.” Taylor said. Dave VanBuskirk, Chamber President stated, “The consequences you receive are a direct result of the choices you make.” Stanley Bean North Middle School Principal commented this is the first time, as he recalls, every eighth grader in the county has been together at one location. Needless to say, there was a lot of energy in the room. Funds to implement the Career Quest where awarded to Franklin County Joint ECD Board for Franklin County meeting the Governor’s benchmarks to be a Three Star & More community. The board requested the Chamber of Commerce Executive Director to implement a program for our youth. The Franklin County Chamber Manufacturers’ Roundtable suggested a Career Awareness program for 8 th Graders and the Career Quest was launched by the manufacturers and Chamber. Special thanks to all of the following: Interlocal Solid Waste, Carol Fulmer contributed water and recycling. Danny Patidar, Subway delivered and donated 500 lunches for the event! The TN Department of EDC Three-Star Grant. FUN FACT:
What is Franklin County’s connection to the Nashville Parthenon? “Being a lover of Art, having spent many years in collecting paintings, having found great pleasure and satisfaction in possessing and living with them, it has occurred to me that through these paintings and the gift of them to the city of Nashville, I might express to the citizens of the State, to some extent at least, the love and reverence I entertain for Tennessee. And it will be my hope that what has given me pleasure in collecting and studying for a great portion of my life, may prove to be of permanent benefit and afford real pleasure to the friends and citizens and coming generations of the State I love above all others.” With this 1927 statement of intent, James M. Cowan (1858-1930) of Aurora, Illinois, businessman and art collector, donated sixtythree paintings to the Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee. James M. Cowan was a resident of Franklin County Tennessee and spent his boyhood years in Cowan.

PHYSICIAN SPOTLIGHT The Advanced Wound Center at Southern Tennessee Medical Center 185 Hospital Road Anderton-Smith Building, Suite J Winchester, TN 37398 931-962-8200
Nearly 6 million patients in America are affected by chronic wounds and more than 1 million people with diabetes will develop foot ulcers this year! Fortunately, the Advanced Wound Center at Southern Tennessee Medical Center (STMC) offers treatment options that can help heal chronic wounds. The Advanced Wound Center, located adjacent to Southern Tennessee Medical Center, is an outpatient program that focuses on chronic and non-healing wounds. Using advanced treatment modalities, we help patients improve the quality of their lives. In partnership with physicians, nurses and multiple medical disciplines, we provide invaluable care for patients. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for all of our patients. That means aggressively managing wounds to ensure they heal quickly and completely. We work in conjunction with referring physicians as partners to determine a complete set of wound care protocols to address each patient’s needs. And we provide all patients with dedicated and specialized attention, enabling them to return to a full life free from the pain of chronic wounds. Kinds of wounds can we treat include: diabetic wounds, pressure ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, arterial ulcers, traumatic wounds, infected wounds and lymphedema. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is one of several advanced treatment modalities offered by the Advanced Wound Center at STMC. During Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, the patient breathes 100% oxygen under pressure, causing the

oxygen to diffuse into the blood plasma. This oxygen-rich plasma is able to travel past the restriction diffusing up to 3 times further into the tissue. The pressurized environment helps to reduce swelling and discomfort, while providing the body with at least 10 times its normal supply of oxygen to help repair tissue damaged by the original occlusion or subsequent hypoxic condition. HBOT is used to treat some of the following conditions: Diabetic foot ulcers, refractory osteomyelitis, crush injuries, gas gangrene, arterial insufficiency, necrotizing infections, radiation proctitis and cystitis. The Advanced Wound Center team includes an experience group of clinicians and three board certified physicians who are trained in Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine.
