Did you know? When a potential new business entrepreneur stops by the Chamber for small business start up information, I personally meet with them and review the regulations for business license information and other basic requirements. Once we establish the basic information, we contact our representative from the TSBDC Tommy Nix, Small Business Specialist. Your Chamber has a strong partnership with the Tennessee Small Business Development Center at Chattanooga State Community College. As of the end of June 2013, nine entrepreneurs have received counseling. The service is free and provided to existing and new business start ups. Starting a business? Confused about the planning, legal and regulatory steps you should follow? Did you know that home-based businesses are required to hold permits to operate legally in most states? What about incorporation? Many new businesses assume they need to incorporate or become an LLC from the get-go – but the truth is, more than 70 percent of small businesses are owned by un-incorporated sole proprietors (although even this group is required to register their businesses). So, variables aside, there are still some fundamental steps that any business needs to follow to get started. A few of those basic steps helpful to work through are: Step 1 – Write a Business Plan A well-prepared plan – revisited often – will help you steer your business all along its growth curve. Try to think of your business plan as a living, breathing project, not a one-time document. Break it down into mini-plans – one for marketing, one for pricing, one for operations, and so on. Step 2 – Get Help and Training (Call or drop by the Chamber) We will provide condensed counseling and set up an appointment with a representative from TSBDC Starting a business can be a lonely endeavor, we have a couple of professionals willing to sit and provide advise.
Upcoming event: Mark your calendars for the 31st Annual Polly Crockett & Tennessee History Festival. Mark your calendar Friday, September 20th at 1pm through Sunday, September 22nd at 4 pm. Bring the entire family to enjoy a fun filled event in beautiful downtown Cowan, Tennessee. The festival honors the Pioneer Spirit of Polly Crockett wife of Davy Crockett. The theme for the festival is “Behind every great man is an enterprising woman.” The festival is to celebrate American History, our past, present and future. This event is just around the corner and we are seeking art, craft, and This “n” That vendors for the three day event. The juried event offers demonstrations as well as samples of traditional country crafts, arts, entertainment by local artists. This “n” That section features commercial vendors and objects that are not original artwork or crafts such as flea market items, screen printing, a true anything goes vendor space. Vendor booth size this year is 12’ X 12’ and booths are available on a first come, first serve basis. Booths are $80.00. Reserve your booth today and mark your calendar to attend. Crafters will be arriving from all over the United States with unique crafts. A variety of food vendors will be in attendance, including roasted corn, kettle corn, barbeque, funnel cakes, shaved ice, homemade ice cream and a lot more mouth-watering treats. We are also looking for local talent! Every year the festival has three days of entertainment to showcase Franklin County’s finest talent. If you would like to share your talent or are aware of a talented group or individual, call 931-967-6788.
Directory Deadline Fast Approaching:
Step 3 – Choose Your Business Location Where you locate your business may be the single most important decision you make. Many factors come into play such as proximity to suppliers, the competition, transportation access, demographics, and zoning regulations. .
Your 2013-2014 Chamber Business Directory and Economic Development Guide is currently being revised and all demographics updated. This publication is only for current up to date members and it is our county’s main marketing tool.
Step 4 - Understand your Financing Options You may choose to bootstrap, fall back on savings, or even keep a full-time job until your business is profitable, but if you are looking for an external source of financing, resources will be provided for you.
Previous advertisers, THANK YOU and you have first option to reserve your same location in 2013-2014 Edition of the Business Directory. This publication is extremely well received by prospects, newcomers and tourist. We have received comments regarding the quality and content of information in the directory. This publication meets a wide variety of demographics for individuals and professionals likely to be attracted to this area. One comment, we like the most was, “what a fabulous resource”.
Step 5 – Decide on a Business Structure Going it alone or forming a partnership? Thinking of incorporating? What about an LLC? How you structure your business can reduce your personal liability for business losses and debts. Some choices can give you tax benefits. The TSBDC representative will help you determine the right structure for your business. These are a few basic steps, you will also need to get a Tax ID, Register with Tax Authorities, Step 9 - Apply for Permits & Licenses, etc. We are happy to help...call 931-967-6788 to explore your dream of owning a small business.
Call and reserve your space today. Thank you for your support!

FOLDING THE FLAG ‘TIL SEPTEMBER
As most of y'all recall, for the last three months my monthly "Flag Article" has addressed the folding of "our" county's Flag. Well I, along with the consent of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce's Executive Director, Ms. Judy Taylor, have decided to stand down for the summer months, or to say; "fold the flag until the September issue", of "The Franklin County Times". To be quite honest, after months of flag articles, I have had this assignment; pretty much run its course. So to that means, I have asked Miss Judy for another assignment, if it is your desire; for me to research and inform with each monthly article. You a patriotic subject that you would care to know more about, please contact Miss Judy at (931) 967-6788 and share your thoughts with her. If it is your desire, I will be up and running with the September 2013 "The Franklin Times" issue, with educational and informative facts with regards to that particular subject matter. Until September, be safe, be healthy and be happy in "your unselfish service to others"! Sergeant Major Larry E. Williams, United States Army/ Retired USASMA Class #33
