For me personally, 2015 was a bittersweet year. We lost our beloved Chairman Emeritus last November. Under his stewardship, Hero was quickly able to grab leadership from the incumbent many years ago; this became possible because Chairman Emeritus provided a brand of leadership that was way ahead of its time. Today, we have another opportunity to develop a genre of leadership that is again ahead of its times. Over the last four years, we have relented sourced and developed technologies, ramped up infrastructure, and created the talent pipeline to ensure that this happens. But more needs to be done., The world around us is more challenging and unpredictable than ever before. So, we together need to grab all the opportunities that come our way, and even create some of our own.

Mr. PAWAN MUNJAL

In recent years, we have shown a few sparks, but these haven't been enough to light many fires. This must change. An innovation here or there --- whether it is i3S or FI technology – is not quite adequate; these technologies must be scaled successfully.

Dear Colleagues, In addition to wishing you a Happy New Year, let me also thank you all for making 2015 a memorable year in different ways. We opened our first overseas manufacturing facility in Colombia in a record period of nine months. Maestro Edge and Duet – the first lot of products developed by our own in-house R&D--were launched successfully and have the potential of becoming winners. On January 15, the Hero Global Centre for Innovation & Technology went live at Jaipur. This world-class facility could add new zing to ourfuture, provided all the other parts of the Hero ecosystem play their respective parts with verve, 1creativity and passion!

Internal Inauguration and

Our innovations must pass the test of credibility, otherwise, they will be of limited value. Also, we mustn't let our innovations be merely of historical significance! Imagine: Hero was the first manufacturer to launch FI technology on a 125cc bike – Glamour – such technology was primarily used in bikes of higher engine displacement. That spark of innovation was ignited in 2005 – a decade ago! In any case, innovation is not just about making pathbreaking products…it involves bringing a new culture of thinking in the way we plan and act. It is about commitment; it is about determination to work around challenges thrown at us by the external environment and coming up with solutions. This, ultimately, is our true test. Do we have the nerve and tenacity to evolve even as sudden events overtake us? We can't control El Nino or floods or storms. Nor do we have any mechanism to calibrate rural distress, or GDP growth or what our competition is upto.

In fact, sometimes, even where we seemingly have control, our best-laid plans can go awry: Last year, one of our key technology partners in the US filed for bankruptcy and closed down operations. Inevitably, this delayed our new product line-up that was under development. Beyond a point, such setbacks rarely perturb me, because I know that in the journey of any company, such hurdles exist. Yet, what genuinely irks me is when we show an incredible lack of imagination while overcoming these obstacles. Hero isn't a newbie. Hero possesses immense knowledge, collated over the last 30 years to predict, plan and beat the odds. Yet I seriously doubt that we are currently using this knowledge optimally. If this was really the case, I know we would be able to provide such a great experience to our customers – that they would keep coming back to us….and we would not have had two years of flat sales! We also need to keep in mind that times are changing. Market share and profitability –– must go hand in hand. The days when we could choose market share over margins or vice versa are now passé. Being the market leader in terms of sales, there is no earthly reason why we can't also be the most profitable company through innovative cost rationalization and judicious fiscal control. And the onus for this lies not just with finance at corporate office or at the plants; all functions across the organization must be accountable for providing cost leadership. The Hero that I dream about—and I want you to dream about as well—is a truly Global company not just in terms of volume sales, leadership position, but also in profitability and global presence.

Awards at CIT, Jaipur In 2016 and beyond, I pray that all your waking hours and thoughts centre around this dream! Pawan

Leadership Team Interview only enable the brands transition from an execution stand point but also conceptualise and create the new codes of the new brand…what to call the new brand ,what the new brand stood for,its architecture, the core philosophy and its proposition. The bigger challenge, however, was to find the magical sweet spot between “change “and “continuity”- while it was critical to signal change it was also very imperative to ensure that a sense of continuity ,at least in terms of the brands “Core Values” is retained.

Mr. Sanjay Bhan

HU – How has been your Journey with HERO? SB – It's been a truly fantastic journey with interesting, diverse experiences. I was fortunate to get the opportunities that I got and allowed me to wear many different hats, while taking up new challenges. I experienced everything one can possibly imaginetrepidation & confidence, setbacks & Successes and recognition & failures ,knowledge & learning ,even as I explored new things and took new risks. In short I would say my journey @Hero has been like a “Life within a Life” HU – How did you manage the transition of the company from Hero Honda to Hero MotoCorp ? SB – Like I said before I was fortunate to get to do some of the most interesting things that have happened at Hero and to be part of the team leading the transition of the brand to Hero, was certainly one such brilliant opportunity. As the Marketing head ,then, it was my responsibility not

5

Hum Mein Hai Hero as an anthem caught the nations imagination and reassured our customers of this change while holding on to our core values …truly captured the emotion and the resolve of Hero as a company,at a time when it was poised to take on the world. HU – How do you involve your employees in coming with new ideas and approaches? SB – We follow a simple and a rather uncomplicated ,but off course digitally enabled approach wherein we conduct a Hangout Meeting every week, mostly a Monday afternoon affair, with the entire team wherein we cover 3 – 5 small presentations by the team members ,basically sharing their ideas and initiatives with the resultant impact they have had. It becomes a very engaging sounding board besides helping us to plan new strategies around some of these ideas. It helps actually boosts creativity and builds engagement along with providing an accessible platform for all to speak with Sales Head/ Business Head etc. Similarly for the team at the Parts Center we have a regular 2 weekly formal review, every alternate Tuesday, to examine areas that need any support or intervention even as we hear of any new initiatives and innovations undertaken by the team members. This is done part of the Project SPEED.

HU – How do you provide feedback to your employees and how do you currently recognize their achievements? SB – We conduct PDC (Parts Distributor Council) meet monthly in different regions where in the Distributors and Parts Manager of that region is also called. The Sales head uses that platform in order to provide feedback and acknowledge the contributions of the team . Apart from the formal process of objective performance feedback system that exists ,we also have informal feedback sharing sessions with the various members on a regular basis. HU – Your favorite quote and how do you apply this in your life? SB – “The only substitute of hard work is more hard work” - Pt. JL Nehru “The woods are lovely dark and deep but I have miles to go and miles to go before I sleep” – Robert L Frost

HU – One memory in HERO that you will always cherish? SB – The proudest moment for all of us@ Hero ,and perhaps a memory I shall always cherish, was when the new brand Hero descended from the huge tall ceiling at the massive ,epic and iconic O2 Arena in London and the brand was unveiled to the World. HU – A one-liner for the new “HERO” SB – Unleash your Potential and be a true Hero! HU – What is your Dream Vacation/Favorite Destination? SB – I would like to drive around in Spain and the French Riviera HU – Favorite Hobby/Interest? SB – Books (mostly Fiction), Playing Cricket, Watching Football and Tennis

Message from HR heads Dharuhera - HM1D Dear Colleagues, Your Dharuhera plant has witnessed quiet a flurry of activity since the last issue of Hero Universe came out. Usually it is unheard that a person of HR team files a technical patent. I am happy to share with you that our Mr. Sudhansu Shekhar Padhy, at Gurukul, has filed a patent for converting the heat emitted through exhaust to heat the handle grips of motorcycles. When actualized, it will be a boon for our two wheeler riders in cold climates. Let us congratulate our sports team that participated in Labour Sports meet organized by Labour Welfare Board, Haryana Govt., where at the State level we won first spot in Shot-put, second in Football, and third in Wrestling (69 kg).

We have engaged a coach to further train the first winner to excel at national and international level. In our internal chess championship event in July 2015 about 50 employees participated with eager zeal. We organised career counselling events for 155 wards of our employees. Like previous year, this year too we organised a family get-together at the Kingdom of Dreams in Gurgaon. All employees and families enjoying a day of gala fun, professional entertainment and sumptuous food. The dozens of ladies and children earned various prizes in the events. As per our past practice we organised a 24 hour Ramacharitmanas path at Late Shri Raman Ji's bersi.

With the help of Mr. Rajesh Mukhija and his team, a traffic park has been started at our Gurukul to teach Safe Riding skills to the employee and Local Youth. In addition we have started specific Training modules to Fitters, Turners, Machinists and Automobile trades, and developing various e-learning modules in house. A special part time course in two wheeler repair & maintenance has also been started as a social initiative to generate self-employment potential in unemployed youths. As usual our Industrial Relations, labour administration and legal compliances have been tremendously well. So, while we at HM1D are undoubtedly committed to our professional goals, we also cherish a healthy work-life balance.
