10 Keys of Business Success By Robert Bowen
6. Key Question: The most important question asked to solve any problem is “How?”. You can apply that to your 3 biggest problems or worries and come up with actions you can take immediately to address them.
All business owners are concerned with where to place their energy and how to spend their time to bring them the positive results they desire. The following keys provide a solid roadmap to ensure your efforts are spent in ways that contributes most to the kind of future you deserve.
7. Key Strategy: Practicing continuous improvement in all areas of your business is necessary in a world of rapid change and aggressive competition. What ways could you offer your products in a better, faster, cheaper and easierto-use manner?
1. Key Purpose: What is the purpose of your business? Beyond earning a profit, the principle reason is to create and keep a customer. A profitable business can’t happen without cost effectively keeping a sufficient number of customers. Ask yourself: what is my plan to create and keep customers?
8. Key Activity: The nerve center of your business is sales. The number one reason for business failure to date is “low sales”. Business success is “high sales” and everything else is commentary. What actions can you take right away to increase your sales?
2. Key Measure: Customer satisfaction is the key measure of business success. This is typically verified when they buy from you often and NOT from your competition. This is a prime determinant of growth and profitability. What are the core areas and measure of customer satisfaction in your business?
9. Key Number: The most important number in your business is cash flow. A good analogy is cash flow is to the business as blood is to the brain. If it’s cut off or impeded, the business can die very quickly. What could you do immediately to increase your cash flow?
3. Key Requirement: A key requirement for wealth and business success to add value. Business growth and profitability comes from adding value. To achieve this, you must continue to add value to your customer’s experience with you. How are you adding value?
10. Key Goal: A growth plan is essential to every business. Apply a goal of 10, 20, 30% or greater each year. Growth does NOT take place by accident. What are 2 – 3 actions you can take NOW to grow your business faster? Per Brian Tracy: The Way to Wealth Part 3
4. Key Focus: As the customer is the most important person in the business, you must focus on them at all times. Even though they have their highs and lows, they must be the reason for all you do. Consider, who is your most important customer type and how do you best please them?
Robert Bowen is a retired Army Reserve Lieutenant Colonel with service in two armed conflicts.
5. Key Word: In all walks of life, you will always be rewarded in direct proportion to the value of your contribution to others. This is a central requirement to increase your overall value both as a person and your business. What are the most important contributions that you make to your business?
Robert has changed his direction of leading others through a military background to a business focus by becoming a Certified FocalPoint Business and Training Coach with a focus on assisting military veteran entrepreneurs to get maximum profitability from their existing businesses.

CERTIFICATION: LETS WORK IT! By Michelle Burkart, Principal Diversity Supplier Alliance OPPORTUNITIES: The opportunities are plentiful with getting your business “certified” as veteran, disabled, small, minority, women, or LGBT- owner. But they can seem out of reach for some business owners. Attempting to tackle the application process, the decision of which certifications to obtain, the evaluation of certification eligibility requirements can make even the most experience business owner cringe at the thought of yet another task to do! TRAINING & RESOURCES: It does not have to be that way. There are government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and consultants to help you through the maze of the certification process. There are training and resources to support your success. The goal of certification is to level the playing field for all businesses in the areas of bidding on government or corporate procurement contracts. The avenues for success can be found in a “three tiered award” level approach so there is room for even the smallest enterprise to win new business.
The Veterans Chamber of Commerce
BENEFITS TO YOU: The benefit of getting your business certified is the development of new revenue generating streams through government contracting, or corporate supplier diversity procurement contracts. You can form strategic partnerships to assist in moving up the tiered award levels. Once you are in the system, the opportunity to expand your business growth can be exponential. So GET CERTIFIED and then LETS WORK IT! About the Author: Michelle Burkart is the Co-Founder of the Diversity Supplier Alliance which assists businesses in the certification process and navigating the world of supplier diversity procurement.

Entrepreneurship is exciting for many Veterans, bringing with it the freedom to create new paths and the reward of discovering new ways to overcome challenges. For Veteran business owners to truly succeed, it is important to understand the three (3) types or “Mind Sets” of Entrepreneurship.
Our mission: To provide a platform where Entrepreneurial minded Veterans can access resources, network with peers and receive mentorship from fellow Veterans.
One: The Entrepreneur - these are people who enjoy creating and they welcome new challenges. Their main driver is innovation. These people see opportunities where others don’t.
The Veterans Chamber of Commerce (VCC) was born out of the desire to provide a platform for Entrepreneurial, like-minded Veterans to collaborate and share dreams and business goals in a welcoming environment surrounded by fellow Veterans. The VCC is that platform.
Two: The Shop Owner - these entrepreneurs are people who enjoy running and managing the day to day operations of a business. Their main driver is consistency. These owners see the business as a long-term investment.
Partial List of VCC areas of Focus: 1. Connecting Veterans with Buyers 2. Hands-on and Relevant Business Training 3. Mentorships and Vet-Facilitated Focus Groups 4. Financing Options 5. Legal and HR Support 6. Exporting Opportunities through Trade Delegations 7. Entrepreneurship for Youth and Military Spouses 8
Veteran Entrepreneur Summit / September 2017
Three: The Executive - these entrepreneurs enjoy the “speculative and potential” side of the business. Their main driver is growth. These people understand the potential of a business and how to multiply it in the marketplace. According to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans more than 40,000 homeless vets receive compensation each month, but that’s not enough to find affordable housing “Many vets have skills learned through the military that are not applicable for occupations in civilian life”. The Veterans Chamber of Commerce (VCC) is in an Ideal position to help our fellow Veterans, through selfemployment, to discover new ways of supplementing their income.

Lean Startup
Several prominent high-tech companies have begun to publicly employ the lean startup methodology, including Intuit, Dropbox, Wealthfront, Votizen, Aardvark, and Grockit. Lean Startup principles are beginning to be taught in classes at Harvard Business School and UC Berkeley.
“Lean startup” is relatively new think approaching a startup enterprise. There’s lots of info on the internet about it due to its use by many highly successful new businesses. Be forewarned: There is a whole bunch of language that has grown up around Lean Startup.
If the Shoe Fits Buy It There is a concept in Lean Startup called “a minimum viable product (MVP)” which is the “version of a new product (or service) which allows a team to collect the maximum amount of validated learning about customers with the least effort.” This used to be called a pilot project. The goal of an MVP is to test fundamental business leap-of-faith assumptions and to help entrepreneurs begin the learning process as quickly as possible.
Wikipedia says, “Lean has nothing to do with how much money a company raises; rather it has everything to do with assessing the specific demands of consumers and how to meet that demand using the least amount of resources possible.” Translation: Find out what your customers want first before you build a whole company around what you think your customers want.
Proof That Repackaging Old Ideas Works
Did you have any idea you wanted to buy shoes on line? Nobody did. Zappos founder Nick Swinmurn thought customers were ready and willing to buy shoes online. Instead of building a website and a large database of footwear, Swinmurn approached local shoe stores, took pictures of their inventory, posted the pictures online, bought the shoes from the stores at full price after he’d made a sale, and then shipped them directly to customers. Swinmurn believed there would be a customer demand. Zappos is now a billion-dollar business selling shoes online.
LS is a methodology for developing businesses and products, which aims to shorten product development cycles by adopting a combination of business-hypothesisdriven experimentation, iterative (this is a favorite word meaning repeated) product releases, and validated learning (another new phrase much embraced). The central hypothesis of the lean startup methodology is that if startup companies invest their time into repeatedly building products or services to meet the needs of early customers, they can reduce the risks and avoid the need for large amounts of initial project funding and expensive product launches and failures.
Lean Startup methodology preaches elimination of wasteful practices and the increase value-producing practices during the product development phase. This positions startups to have a better chance of success without requiring large amounts of outside funding, elaborate business plans, or the perfect product. Customer feedback during product development is essential to the lean startup process.
Not a new idea. Lean Startup’s popularity is due to the success of Eric Ries’ bestselling book, The Lean Startup, published in September 2011. The book quickly took off on Amazon.com, selling over 90,000 copies in ten months. The methodology has since been expanded to apply to any individual, team, or company looking to introduce new products or services into the market.
So, let me restate that in English: don’t fall in love with your own idea. Find out what customers really want and are willing to pay for. Keep asking them for feedback and modifying your offer as you learn. If this isn’t enough about Lean Startups for you, Google it. Stand back and prepare for the deluge.

What You Need to Know About Money By Matt Harper, Commander, U.S. Navy (Ret) Looking to start a business or found a startup? As a veteran, you probably have three skills that will serve you well. 1. You are used to working hard. I don’t mean 9 or 10 hour days every occasionally. I mean working hard through a deployment, 15 to 18 hours a day. 2. You are used to learning something new and learning it fast. You have been thrown into a position or a job where homework was the requirement and learning fast was essential. 3. You’re a leader. This is self-explanatory but all your skills in leadership and management will make you more effective as a business owner or startup founder. When you take the dive then you might need money to start your business. (Don’t assume you need to borrow or raise money. Bootstrap as long as you can.) The good news is there is probably no better time to find funding for your business.
Seven Tips for Buying a Business By Maggie Pound 1. While you may be tempted to buy a business directly from a seller and not use a business broker, buyers beware! If you want to learn about buying a business, register on some of the websites that brokers advertise including www.bizbuysell.com or www.bizben.com. Remember that the seller pays the broker. 2. Most buyers are interested in why a seller is selling. Lots of baby boomers are retiring right now but if that is not the case, the reason a sellers gives is often not the true or only reason. 3. Accurately valuing a small business is often the most challenging part of the process. Valuation is an art, not a science. We spend a lot of time helping our sellers to value their business but most think it is worth way more. As a buyer, always keep in mind that the “Asking Price” is NOT the Purchase Price. 4. When making an offer consider elements such as inventory, payment terms including “earn out” provisions, training period, retention of key staff, etc. Also if the seller owns the property, there are building lease or purchase considerations. 10

To start off, do your homework! Figure out what type of business you want and what’s the plan. Knowing the type of business, you want to start will lead you to the general difference between equity and debt. For example, if you want to open a dry cleaner, or a coffee shop or a clothing maker you’ll probably want to get debt from a lending source. If on the other hand, you think you have reinvented the dry-cleaning process to do it while a customer waits then you’ll be wanting large infusions of money before you’re truly profitable and therefore will likely look for equity from investors. Finally, let me leave you with this from billionaire Mark Cuban, “small businesses don’t fail for lack of capital, they fail for lack of brains, they fail for lack of effort, most people aren’t willing to put in the time to work smart.” Make it happen and good luck! Matthew Harper, Commander, U.S. Navy (Ret) was a Surface Warfare Officer and in addition to having done three days of damage control on USS Cole, he holds a Masters from Harvard Kennedy School. He is currently a Director at VentureMoney, an early stage venture capital company based in San Diego.
5. ALWAYS do your due diligence including financials, operations, the competition, the industry and its future potential. Financial reports can be falsified so ask to review the applicable tax records (income as well sales receipts). 6. Have a comprehensive escrow. Use a company familiar with business transitions. Escrow officers ensure there are no hidden liabilities that could become your responsibility. Escrow fees are normally split between buyer and seller 7. One alternative to check into is buying a franchise. Franchise consultants can make an assessment to see if you are a good candidate for a franchise, explain the variety of options, and provide the necessary documents for your to consideration. What’s great is they are a “free” resource to any buyer. Meet the Challenge of the Changing Marketplace
In today’s fast paced competitive business arena staying focused and on track, ready to meet the challenges of the ever changing marketplace is not always easy.
By Barbara Eldridge
One of the dangers of going it alone is the complete and utter reliance on your own knowledge and motivation. If you miss a crucial step in the plan because you got distracted the next thing you know you could be steering completely off course. That can mean a lot of wasted time and resources. A mastermind/think tank group demonstrates the power of what a motivated network of support, training, advice, troubleshooting, inspiration and challenge can do. Brainstorming with a group helps with focusing and executing relevant, high value activities that bring results and success. Owning a business demands an attitude of willingness to embrace change, so there is clarity of vision, when delivering value and getting results.
It was Iowa, 1903, when George Eldridge built the first automobile engine. It was a just a buckboard with an engine that worked great to haul around supplies. So well, in fact, he built a carriage with an engine to carry his family around. But, that’s as far as George’s vision went. You see he built it five years before Henry Ford built the Model T. Just think how different things would have been if George Eldridge had had the support and input of other business owners to turn his dream into something bigger? He might be remembered as the inventor of the automobile.
Having other business owners to listen to you and bounce ideas off from is invaluable. Contrary to what is often said, we DO learn when we talk. Speaking our thoughts and ideas out loud clarifies our thinking. In addition we all need to be motivated. We all need inspiration. And we need it often. A mastermind group can provide a regular dose of both. The Challenge; If your success is too important to leave to chance, then getting involved in a mastermind or starting one is the most important step you can take for the success you want.
Napoleon Hill coined the concept of the mastermind alliance in his classic book Think and Grow Rich. He believed that a group of like-minded, achievement oriented individuals could dramatically leverage the marketplace for each other. “No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind.” Napoleon Hill Today’s business challenges are even greater then George’s – competition, technology, the economy, and a vastly changing marketplace. So how do small business owners stay on top of these challenges and bridge the gap between where they are now and where they want to be.
Barbara Eldridge, Founded Mind Masters, an organization for entrepreneurs to master the challenges they face in an ever-changing market place. For more than twenty-five years Barbara Eldridge has offered the experience and power of a motivated network of support, training, advice, troubleshooting and inspiration to business owners out there doing it alone. - www.mindmasters.com (858) 467-9091
As small biz owners, you all work in a degree of isolation. When things get hard, where do you go for help? Given the time and resources you put into your business, the last thing you want is to come up short on results.
EVERYTHING is Marketing
marketing. The quality of your business’ representatives is also a form of marketing. Finally, the quality of business property is marketing as well; physical location, company vehicles, uniforms etc.
Perhaps the time has come for us to change the way we think about marketing.
When rethinking the definition of marketing, apply this simple rule: if people can talk about it, then it is marketing. Changing the way you think about marketing is a vital step to setting your business apart from and above your competitors.
Constantino Nuzzo Profit Website Management
Not too long ago when folks talked about marketing they were talking about 1 of 3 things: print advertising, TV advertising, or radio advertising. Today you have to add a company’s website to that list and, depending on the business, social media could be added as well. But is that it? Is that all there is to marketing?
Constantino (Costa) Nuzzo is an Internet Marketing Professional with over 5 years experience in website development/design and Internet marketing. He is a graduate of the University of Arizona and business partners with his friend Donte Ormsby, owner of Profit Website Management.
Everything above describes money businesses spend for the direct purpose of reaching potential customers; basically money spent on things businesses WANT people to see.
Costa’s focus in business is always on 1 goal: Every marketing action should have a clear path to increasing revenue. This philosophy has helped clients streamline their marketing expenses; getting better results for less money.
What if we were to include the money spent on EVERYTHING people see and interact with? What do I mean by everything? The quality of products and/or services you provide is

THE TRANSITION TO CIVILIAN LIFE IS NOT! A JOB CHANGE……. IT IS A LIFE CHANGE!
THE CHALLENGE
Each year over 200,000 service members transition from the military with over 50% of them going on 22 weeks of unemployment insurance. Survey results show that 81 percent of transitioning military personnel do not “feel fully prepared for the process of entering the job market.” And unfortunately, the military’s Transition Assistance Program is not designed to address the cultural needs of members leaving the service.
THE SOLUTION
In 2010 the National Veterans Transition Service Inc. (NVTSI) created REBOOT Workshops™. REBOOT Workshops™ are designed to meet an acute need for robust military to civilian transition program and close the gap. By addressing transition issues at their root cause, NVTSI and its network of partners helps transitioning service members, veterans and spouses successfully transitioning from the military-to-civilian world through a three phased, 15-day intensive workshop that empowers them with resiliency and self sufficiency. The goal of the workshop is to assist veterans in reframing their thought patterns from military service to civilian life, with all veterans achieving, within their potential, their unique goals in the TRANSITION DOMAINS of: Employment and Career, Education, Living Situation, Personal Effectiveness & Wellbeing and Community-Life Functioning. The results of the the program after five years has a 97% success rate for over 1300 REBOOT graduates. Discover how you can REBOOT your life after military service at: www.REBOOT.vet
