HELLO THERE Amina & Kathy | Around You Editors

Welcome to our October 2020 edition of Around You Silver Lakes/Pretoria East magazine. What is so amazing about the seasons is how quickly the change takes place. One day it is cold when three layers of jerseys are required and the next day the layers need to come off. This is also evident in the garden, a bare tree soon has leaves and the grass quickly goes from brown to green in no time. Thank you to Olive and Grape (www.oliveandgrape.co.za) for the wonderful giveaway of a hamper to the value of R1100. Our lucky winner of the competition is Rozani Honiball Well done, we will be in contact with you. Thank you to everyone who entered the competition. In this month’s edition, have a look at the interview with Marieth Kloppers. Marieth totally reinvented herself a number of years ago and through setting herself goals is achieving amazing results. Included in this edition is my mom’s easy macaroni and cheese recipe. Growing up I was a fussy eater but the one thing that I loved was macaroni and cheese. This recipe is quick to make and will appeal to most fussy eaters. Also make sure to read our regular articles from N’cita Willey and Nadia Martins. South Africa moved to level 1 of lockdown restrictions on 21 September 2020, but remain vigilant, remember to keep wearing a mask and wash hands regularly. Please send any suggestions and contributions to: aroundyousa@gmail.com. “Life is a circle of happiness, sadness, hard times and good times. if you are going through hard times have faith that good times are on the way”.

MESSAGE FOR MY MOMMY Written by Kathy O’Connor I remember how you would bake cakes for me, my favourite was your hot milk sponge filled with apricot jam and fresh cream. Mommy, did I ever thank you for these cakes, I can’t remember. Mommy, I remember meeting you at the airport when I would infrequently return to Cape Town to visit you. You would give me a big hug and say how much you missed me. Mommy, why did I not come and visit you more often, why did I wait until it was too late. Mommy, I remember how you would encourage me out of my shell and gently prod me to play tennis. Often I was too busy and did not feel like playing tennis with you and you would understand. Mommy, when I became a moody teenager, filled with all kinds of strange feelings, you still put up with me. You tolerated me and loved me, no matter what. Mommy you did so much for me. You sacrificed so much of your time for me. You never asked for anything in return, you just did everything without complaining and without any reward. Mommy I remember how when I started at a new school, you would walk to the school and meet me after school and we would walk home together. You did this for a whole year. Did I ever thank you for this, I don’t remember, but thank you mommy.

Mommy, how I long to see you again but now it’s too late. I miss you mommy and I thank you for everything you ever did for me. You were a kind and generous person, you always put over people before yourself. You never put yourself first. I love you mommy and I thank you. You passed and I never got to say goodbye and I never spent your last Christmas on this earth with you. Have I failed you mommy? Love you always.

INTERVIEW WITH MARIETH KLOPPERS (ESTATE AGENT, ENTREPRENEUR & INSPIRATIONAL WOMAN)

AROUND YOU

I feel privileged to interview you today. You are someone who is very inspiring and that is why I contacted you for this interview. You studied a Bachelor of Accounting at the University of Pretoria, initially you worked as an accountant before you became involved in the real estate industry. In 2009 you bought a RE/MAX franchise, RE/MAX Infoglobe. You have however branched out and are involved in a number of other businesses.

In October 2020, I am opening a private and exclusive studio gym, FOTIA FITNESS, in Pretoria East close to Menlyn, together with Mike Thomaides, one of the best personal trainers in South Africa. FOTIA is the Greek word for “fire, and we chose this name because we believe that everyone has a fire within them that we would like to help ignite. A healthy body hosts a healthy mind. So our goal with FOTIA Fitness is to help our clients discover their fire. What would you consider your top accomplishments?

Let us jump in right away... Tell us a little more about the other businesses you are involved in other than real estate? I am a proud co-owner of an upmarket beauty salon called MK SALON, close to Menlyn. Services include hair, nails, laser, tanning, grooming and everything beauty related. MK SALON truly is a one-stop beauty parlour offering the best treatments and only top quality products. We even have a professional photography studio on site. INFOGLOBE PROJECTS is a maintenance company that originated due to our massive rental book at RE/MAX INFOGLOBE and the constant need for reliable maintenance of properties that we are managing. Services include general handyman work, garden and pool maintenance, electrical and plumbing.

My sales team, Team Marieth, received the award for the number one broker team within the RE/MAX group nationally in 2019. This was a goal which took several years of blood, sweat and tears to accomplish. Receiving the award was a very proud moment for me. It was also very special when we moved into our beautiful, modern office building, visible from Garsfontein Road, about 5 years ago. With some help, I designed and built the office from scratch and I just love working from there every day. Name your positive traits? I never give up. Quitting is just not an option in my world. I choose to always see the best in people. This is not always a positive trait, but it is still not something I want to change.

AROUND YOU

Describe your ideal weekend? I love spending a quiet long weekend at my holiday apartment in Ballito. It is extremely serene with sea views, mongoose and birds waking you up in the morning. The best place to rejuvenate. How do you juggle and balance your home and work life? I have lots of help. I’m blessed with the best nanny in the world, Maggie. She has been with our family for almost 11 years and she is like a second mother to my two boys and a good friend to me. My mom is also very involved in our lives and she helps me with driving the boys around, homework and buying groceries. At the office I am also very fortunate to be working with the best support team anyone can ask for. They are not only colleagues but also my work family. Do you have any weaknesses? I have many. I am very stubborn and don’t always listen. I’m also extremely impulsive which can be a good and bad trait depending on the circumstances. Oh and chocolate! Chocolate is definitely one of my weaknesses . What are your personal and professional goals, both short and long term? I want to see our RE/MAX office, RE/MAX Infoglobe become the number one RE/MAX multi-office in South Africa within the next two to three years. We are currently hovering between number three and four on the rankings.

On a more personal level, I want to make it possible for my eldest son, Jarrod, to go study in the US after finishing matric in three years’ time. How do you stay motivated? I have always been a very driven and motivated person. It just comes naturally to me. My daily exercise and weight-training keep me focused and make me feel healthy and alive and ready to overcome the challenges I have to face each day. If you ask me you are in the best physical shape of your life, what made you decide to get into shape? When I was 38 years old, 5 years ago, I weighed almost 100 kilograms and I was unhealthy and unhappy. I went through a divorce and work was my only escape. I realised that I couldn’t continue on that path and set a goal for myself to look and feel the best ever in two years’ time on my 40th birthday. I achieved this goal and since then my aim is to be happier, healthier and look better each year on my birthday. Are you a cat or dog person? I love all animals. I’m the proud mommy of a French bulldog, a Yorkshire terrier and a Persian cat. These three babies are spoiled rotten but they deserve it as they offer so much love and make our family happy. Marieth, thank you for your time. You are an amazing person and someone who commands lots of respect and influence. Let’s chat again soon.

THE ART OF PERSUASION IN BUSINESS AND LIFE Written by Nadia Martins | NDJ Consultants & MPowrMe

Persuasion is important in both business and life. Below are six aspects of persuasion which if mastered can make an enormous difference in the way people work and operate in their daily lives. RECIPROCITY Simply put, people feel obliged to give back to others the form of behaviour, gift or service that they have received. For example, if a friend invites you to their party, there’s an obligation for you to invite them to a future party you are hosting. So, the key to using the principle of reciprocation is to be the first to give and to ensure what you give is personalised and unexpected. CONSISTENCY Consistency is initiated by looking for and asking for an initial commitment. People like to be consistent with things they have previously committed to doing. So, when seeking to influence using the consistency principle, look for voluntary and public commitments from people and ideally get these commitments in writing. CONSENSUS Especially when they are uncertain, people will look to the actions and behaviours of others to determine their

AROUND YOU

own. So, the science is informing us that rather than relying on our own ability to persuade others we can point to what others are already doing and be guided accordingly. LIKING People prefer to say yes to those they like. We like people who are similar to us; we like people who pay us compliments; we like people who help us to achieve our goals. Harness the powerful principle of “liking”, be sure to look for areas of similarity that you share with others. AUTHORITY People follow the lead of credible and knowledgeable experts. What science is telling us is that it is important to show others what makes you a credible authority. SCARCITY People want more of the things they have less of. So, it is not enough simply to tell people about the benefits they’ll gain if they choose your products and/or services, you also need to point out what is unique about your proposition and what they stand to lose if they fail to consider your proposal.

TRAVELS WITH AN OLD MAN (PART 2) Written by Emmay Golding

Against all odds, we land in Sydney and clear customs without incident. Even collecting our hire car is relatively stressfree. Largely because, at eighty, my father is so beyond the maximum allowable driver's age, that argument is not even initiated. Although I do sense him waver slightly as he converts the insurance excess to South African Rands. The couple of driving lessons he gave me before contracting a professional instructor have left deep scars for both of us. But fortunately, the very strident British lady on the GPS has no such memories of past trauma. She quickly puts the Old Man in his place, and we are off to find our Airbnb. From our balcony, we look onto the Norfolk Pine-lined promenade and turquoise-blue waters of Manly Beach. Our trip has coincided with a spell of good weather, so even though it’s only August, it’s warm enough to swim. Dad's nervous of the ocean, which surprises me until I realise that back home, he can support himself against rocks. Manly Beach stretches for kilometres without a rock in sight. It's no matter though, Sydney is home to over forty tidal pools, and one of the best is just a short, flat walk away. It's late afternoon, and the water is warm from the sun. Navigating the stairs was a bit slow, but once in the water, it's as though Dad has lost twenty AROUND YOU

years. We swim out the stiffness of the journey and dry off in the warmth of the setting sun. It would have been the perfect ending to the day, but we plan to stop at Coles and pick up something for dinner on the way home. And it only makes sense to pick up breakfast and some staples at the same time, Dad points out. The new-fangled, organic muesli provided by our trendoid Sydney hosts is clearly not to his satisfaction. In his day, anything grown in soil was considered organic. No, what he requires is wholewheat bread for toasting, eggs and…Vegemite! Now, in four decades, I've never seen my father so much as touch Marmite. But I know where this originates. My mom loved her Marmite and became even more smitten by Vegemite when they travelled to Australia together. Although I seriously doubt it’s going to be eaten, I’m chuffed to find a dinky little jar for just a dollar. Sensitive daughter that I am, I pop it in the trolley and am entirely mystified by the face my father pulls. Dismissing it as an unconscious facial tic, I turn my back for a second, only to find my dinky replaced by a giant family-sized bottle - eight times the quantity on special for just five dollars. The trip from the airport may have convinced the Old Man that driving tuition wasn't money wasted. But he is questioning the years of private school, extra maths lessons, and, most definitely, my commerce degree. We leave the supermarket laden. Well technically, it’s my father who’s laden because he insists on carrying all the parcels. He also insists I walk in front. He is exhausted but won't admit it, and puts on an extra spurt each time I turn round to check on him. The same people who smiled indulgently at me for spending time with my father at the pool, are now glaring at me. What kind of person would force her elderly parent to run after her, carrying a kilogram jar of yeast extract?

10 STEPS TO PROTECT YOUR VIBE Written by N’cita Willey| N’cita Willey Intuitive Counselling

Hey there, did you make it through the last few months or are you still "in it"? For many people, myself included, there has been some heavy energies and challenges arising recently that have been difficult to navigate through. Past pain and trauma are emerging, fears resurfacing, what seemed like stable areas of reality and life are shifting and previously unseen and unfelt blockages are rising up to be felt and faced. Let me tell you, this is not easy stuff. I honestly got hit with it really hard during August and September months but thankfully I had a realisation and breakthrough again which helped to support and guide me through this challenging time. I realised how important it is to look after my emotional self and especially protect my own energy. This helped me so I could not only make it through the challenge, but claim the spiritual growth and transformation available right along side it. I will be sharing these 10 steps I followed and I encourage you to start with them immediately. Even if you feel like you can’t get to all 10 immediately, it is absolutely fine, just start with one step a day and see and feel which ones work best for you. AROUND YOU

bath or reading a book. Point is, take time out for yourself.

STEP 1 | Let go of things you can't control. Give it over to a Higher Power, this process of surrender is so empowering.

STEP 6 | Always speak kindly to yourself and to others.

STEP 2 | Don't do anything that doesn’t feel right - always trust your gut feeling. If it feels wrong, trust that feeling. Remember we can never make a wrong decision when we listen to the feelings of our heart, always trust it. STEP 3 | Avoid comparing yourself to others - you are you and that's what makes you so special.

STEP 7 | Avoid gossip and bashing others it only brings down your energy. STEP 8 | Please yourself before trying to please others - this isn't selfish. Remember the old saying "one can't pour from an empty cup" - thus first look after your own needs because this will make you feel good and thus empower you and give you energy to then look after others.

STEP 4 | Keep your faith larger than your fears. On this note, don't buy into the current and ongoing COVID-19 fear. Keep faith that God or a Higher Power is protecting you and nothing can harm you. Buying into this fear, only brings down your energy, making you negative. Instead keep faith, have good hygiene and send love to everyone around the world.

STEP 9 | Stay away from people who drain your energy. And on that note, stay away from situations that drain your energy too. You know when you walk away from a certain person or situation, that you feel so tired all of a sudden, these are energy vampires and you should set boundaries for yourself. If you can't totally avoid them, then at least minimize your time in their presence.

STEP 5 | Don't be afraid to spend time alone. Take time out for meditation or a

STEP 10 | Ignore any opinions that don't enhance your life. Your opinion is the one

that matters most. If you feel good about something, that is all that matters, don't let anybody make you doubt yourself or second guess a decision you made. Your soul is wise and you can always trust yourself by the way something makes you feel. If it feels good, go for it. If it feels off or bad, stay away. Your emotions are your best friend, let them guide you everyday. This is a new week, new month, new chapter, new page, new wishes with new energy. May this month give you courage, strength, confidence, patience, self-love and inner peace. May every day in October be filled with hope, love, sunshine and energy. And most importantly, make sure you protect your energy and have an absolutely blessed October. Sending all of you my love and light! Remember, I can help you with this process and teach you techniques on how to change your energy, so that you have the power to change your life.
