CHANGE YOUR Perspective By N’cita Willey| N’cita Willey Intuitive Counselling
Wow, I can’t believe we going into November already. It’s the last stretch of the year and I know most of us find it challenging and stressful. We feel we have so much to do in so little time. This year in itself has been challenging with not only COVID-19 but with our own individual challenges as well. Therefore, I want to introduce the following idea or message to you which you can take with you into the month of November:
Stop trying to calm the storm. Calm Yourself. The storm will pass Nothing comes from outside of us, we are at the centre of everything that happens in our lives. Everything is inside; every experience, every relationship, is a mirror of a mental pattern that we have inside us. The secret is there is no such thing as “out there” - everything happens to you in your mind. Everything you see, everything
AROUND YOU
you hear, every person you meet, you experience in your mind. To help you navigate through this last stretch of 2020, I have compiled a list of things to remember when you feel challenged or when you feel like you are going through a tough time. Read through this list often and try to apply it, I am confident that it will help you and ease some of your anxiety. Things to remember through tough times:
when
going
1. It’s a learning experience When you are facing something challenging, change your perspective from this is an obstacle I have to overcome to “this is only a learning experience”, I can only grow from this. Wayne Dyer has one of the most beautiful quotes to explain this, he always said “when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”. When you change the way you see the world, when your intentions are positive and powerful, when you search only for the good, then your life transforms into the amazing adventure it was designed to be. After all, anything and everything in life is all up to interpretation. In other words, there is no such thing as reality, you create your own reality with the thoughts you think.
AROUND YOU
2. Everything can and will change This goes hand in hand with the saying: “this too shall pass”. Remember nothing in life is permanent. The only constant thing in life is ‘change’. While you are going through the challenging time, remember to breath and lightly tap with your finger tips on your chest saying “this too shall pass”. This always brings relief to me. 3. Not getting what you want can be a blessing We shouldn’t compare our lives to anyone else’s and we need to realise that we are exactly where we are supposed to be. When you look back on your life experiences, you’ll likely be surprised by your own journey. Look at how everything has fallen into place and worked out better than you planned. All the so-called setbacks and disappointments turned out to be blessings. As the Dalai Lama once
said: “remember that sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck.” 4. Being kind to yourself is the best medicine Depending on the situation, you may need different ways of being compassionate with yourself; e.g. you can comfort yourself with your caring words and gestures (putting your hand on your heart like you would embrace a friend). You can soothe yourself by taking a nap or doing a breathing meditation. You can find validation in acknowledging your struggle (I know things are really hard right now). Other times, being selfcompassionate may mean protecting yourself (by saying: “No!”), providing for yourself through good nourishment and plentiful sleep and motivating yourself like you would encourage a friend (You can do this! I believe in you!).
AROUND YOU
5. And there is always, always, always something to be grateful for Gratitude helps us learn. Every dark cloud has a silver lining. Behind every problem lies an opportunity. Being grateful for our situation - even if we don’t like everything about it - allows us to be thankful for the opportunity to learn something new. November is the month to remind us to be thankful for the many positive things happening in our life and it is also a time to appreciate how far you’ve come in life and your career, not how far you still have to go. When you look at the overall trajectory of where you were, where you are now and how far you want to go, you will see the full spectrum, not just a piece of it. And then you will notice how much better you feel inside. I wish you a blessed November. Remember, I can help you with this process and teach you techniques on how to change your energy, so that you have the power to change your life. It is very unusual for a national and African record to get broken at altitude and in a school pool. Congratulations Tatjana.

NOVEMBER IN THE GARDEN By Sheryl Thiel | Life is a Garden
The garden in November is usually filled with a rich colour palette of late spring blooms. The bold and beautiful hydrangeas are part of this glorious mix and never fail to wow us, year after year. Their local name is krismisroos and they remind many people of the coming holiday season. Conveniently, Friday 27 November is Black Friday - a day where many shoppers look forward to buying bargains as Christmas gifts. Look out for specials at your local GCA Garden Centre and enjoy getting ready for the festive season. Life is a Garden, so go ahead and decorate yours!

Edible (Planting beetroot) Here are some planting tips for your beetroot seedlings: • Since beetroot mature underground, they do not like to compete with a heavy clay soil. If you have clay soil, dig compost into the top 15cm layer. • For almost continuous plant every 14 days.
harvesting,
Tip: Fertilise lightly with a 2:3:2 or equivalent organic fertiliser i.e. that is not high in nitrogen as too much nitrogen will encourage mostly leafy growth. Water sparingly since overwatering encourages leafy growth and bolting (flowering and not producing a vegetable). Beetroot also grows well in combination with blood sorrel (rubus sanguineus). Seeds The following seeds can be sown now: • Bright, flirty and fun - marigolds are one of the easiest seeds to sow. Find a sunny place to scatter the seeds. Cover them with a fine layer of soil and water gently for the first week to two, making sure that the soil does not dry out. If you have planted the seeds too closely, thin the seedling out when they are about 4 to 6cm high. Marigolds are great companion plants in veggie gardens.
AROUND YOU
• Chrysanthemums are fresh and cheerful (chrysanthemum paludosum), or creeping daisy has beautiful white petaled flowers with a bright yellow centre which are loved by butterflies and bees. The yellow daisy (chrysanthemum multicaule) produces masses of tiny yellow blooms while other single mixed coloured chrysanthemum seeds are also available. Chrysanthemums can be sown directly into the beds with pauldosum and multicaule, preferring to be about 2mm under the soil and the single mixed colours 4mm down. All of them can also be planted in trays. • Edging lobelia (lobelia erinus) come in a selection of colours with Crystal Palace being a popular dark blue variety. Scatter them on the surface of the tray or the soil when sown directly and then gently press down. They are excellent to hang over the edges of containers and hanging baskets. • Cucumber: Remember to provide space for them to grow unless you are going to tie them to supports. • Pumpkin will require a large space to spread out in a sunny location. • Corn or mielies: Dig the soil a fork’s depth and preferably work compost into the soil before sowing seeds, spacing them about 30cm apart.
AROUND YOU
Interesting Tip: A century-old companion planting method used by the Iroquois, an American tribe, was called the Three Sister’s planting. The Three Sisters planting technique utilises corn, climbing beans and squash or pumpkin. Each plant serves a purpose in this design. The corn or mielies provide the climbing (pole) for the beans and the beans add nitrogen to the soil. The squash or pumpkin protects all the sisters by using its large leaves to shade the soil, to reduce weeds and keep the soil moist. Try it for yourself! Canada will be banning single-use plastic by the end of 2021. If you think about it, we can manage without plastic bags, straws, six-pack rings, disposable cutlery and polystyrene food containers, it just requires some imagination and change of habits. How can we play our part? Begin by refusing straws, plastic bags and plastic vegetable bags. We have only one earth, let’s protect and care for it.

ROASTED CARROT AND POTATO PEELS By Kathy O’Connor
I signed up for Food Waste Free October. The idea behind this imitative is to create awareness about food waste and to provide practical tips on ways to reduce wastage.
INGREDIENTS
With this in mind here is my tip: After peeling carrots and potatoes what do you usually do with the peels? I suggest keeping them in a container in the fridge and once you have collected enough, try making roasted vegetable peels. The peels can be kept for up to 5 days in the fridge. They are a great accompaniment to any meal.
Hint: I wash and dry my peels before roasting as I find washing before peeling shortens their shelf life.
Carrot and potato peels Olive oil or similar Salt and pepper
DIRECTIONS 1. Place carrot and potato peels in a bowl. Add a splash of oil and seasoning. Mix together. Place on a greased baking tray and arrange in a single layer. 2. Bake at 200°C for approximately 10 minutes until crispy. Keep an eye on them as they burn easily.

Pour in the remaining water and freeze until the ice cubes are frozen. 4. Spice up a glass of sparkling water with a mint ice cube and slice of lemon.

morning routine START YOUR DAY ON YOUR FRONT FOOT By Kathy O’Connor Do you have a morning routine or are you someone who gets up and rushes into the first chores of the day with no time for yourself? With the current warm weather it is much easier to get out of bed earlier than usual and to spend time on yourself.
AROUND YOU
Here a few steps which I recommend: • Start the day with a good stretch. Feel the stretch in your arms, fingers and back and at the same time take a deep breath and then exhale. • Grab a glass of water and drink it. After 8 hours of sleep it is amazing how thirsty you are. • After the glass of water, sit back and relax. Spend a few moments to think about the day that is ahead of you, focus your attention on what needs to be done and also remind yourself of how grateful you are for everything in your life. • Write down your to-do list for the day and if you have a very long list, just focus on getting the most urgent tasks completed. • Do some exercise. It could be just 5 minutes but in time the 5 minutes might become 10 minutes and so on. Exercise is important in improving your mood and outlook. • Prepare a healthy breakfast for yourself and enjoy. Try to do all of the above before the rest of the household gets up because once this happens, the above steps will most probably be sidelined while you attend to the families’ needs and wants.

local highlights from OCTOBER 2020 Is Ricoffy Coffee?: The following question was posed - is Ricoffy coffee? The vast majority of people said no, it is definitely not, although we did have a few supporters of the beverage. When pressed, I will drink Ricoffy but it is not a first choice. Date Night ideas: We had someone looking for suggestions for date night ideas and it is amazing the different options available to residents of Pretoria East including hidden gems and top-notch restaurants. Some of the dinner venues suggested included Fermier Restaurant, Tin Roof CafĂŠ and Wings and Water Guesthouse. Caution: Be cautious when shopping in the local shopping centres. Although the security guards are on the lookout for bag snatchers, be vigilant and keep watch over your handbag and cell phone. Planes, trains and automobiles: At the end of September, we had the privilege of having numerous military planes fly over Silver Lakes by the SAAF Hercules C130s and Pilatus PC-7s as well as one or two quick passes by the SAAB Gripens, it was such a treat.

DANCING BEYOND MY BODY: MY SOUL DANCING By Paola Diaz Uribe | Creative of Artist Souls Paola Diaz What is our “Soul”? How is the “Soul” defined? For some, the soul is the spirit or the essence of a human being. For others, the soul is the “driver” of their bodies and I identify myself with this definition. My soul is what makes my physical body alive and what can make it either positively nurtured or negatively drained. And then, it becomes important the quality of who I am and what I do, through my physical being, to feed my soul. I started as a dancer focused on physical body movement patterns, repeating the counting of my own steps but those came basically in my blood as a LatinAmerican, born and raised surrounded by the dance scene as part of my normal life. AROUND YOU
It took me several decades along with a lot of different experiences in the dance community, in different places in the world with different social, behavioural and culture-related contexts. At some point during this journey, my mindset became more flexible, open, diverse, enriched and complemented by so many cultural exchanges and finding so many cultural “roots” in common as well. Dancing would take me to a world of sounds, textures, elements, stories, instruments and beyond. I found myself in a whole new learning pathway where I went beyond my own body movement and straight to my inner essence, my inner feeling of what would make me move, looking for that “driver” that would elevate my passion and so beautifully expressed when my body would dance.
of my soul, my mind, my heart, connected all so strong and I would even sing loud and my face would express visible smiles and laughter! The sound of the cununo, percussion instrument from the Afro-Pacific region of Colombia, would go straight to my stomach, to my womb, creating waves that will lift me from the floor…The sound of the bombo, another percussion instrument, would invade my shoulders and make them flirt together with my hips in a deep connection with my own femininity, my own sensuality… The sound of a gaita, indigenous musical instrument from our Caribbean coast, would go from my feet to my back and my arms which will take my whole body up and high in a lyric expression of my deep soul
I became fully aware of my favourite rhythms to dance, those that would make my heart reach the highest vibration of happiness when dancing. I discovered a deep connection of my own traditional Colombian dances to the origin of those, and they would be based on the sounds and rhythms of Indigenous, African and European roots. After decades and centuries of history, our past, our heritage brings together all cultures, countries and continents in one same space. I realised that whenever listening to one of my favourite Colombian dance rhythms, every musical instrument in those rhythms would embrace my feelings, my body would start moving but this movement was originated by a high note
AROUND YOU
feeling the sound of an accordion, of European origin adopted by our home tribes, would reach my heart and my eyes will close while spinning back and forward to the flow of my cumbia skir. The sound of a guacharaca, another of our indigenous instruments, will make my feet crawl in a smooth almost invisible way, with my skirt covering my feet and making me look as if I have wings, I will literally fly and “moonwalk on the floor. My soul is now dancing to its beloved music and with it, my body can express every feeling I go through. My soul one day can be sad and will dance a smooth nostalgic vallenato. My soul might want a party another day and will jump from the chair with a salsa choke or a champeta. My soul will be in love every day and will highly rise with the notes of a deep meaningful Cumbia. My soul keeps exploring every way to achieve happiness through my dances and the heritage that connects myself to the rest of the world while sharing common roots. How about letting your soul discover your own self, explore your origin, explore your roots, discover what makes your essence, visualise yourself in your ideal and most passionate level that could make your body truly feel and move?
