AROUND YOU

HELLO THERE Amina & Kathy | Around You Editors

Welcome to our September 2020 edition. On many levels winter is a wonderful time of year. Often it provides a convenient excuse to enjoy an extra spoon of stew and an extra piece of flatbread. That said, let us now focus on spring and summer. The extra helpings need to stop and the exercise routine must start in earnest (wishful thinking perhaps!). In this month’s edition, have a look at the article by our regular contributor N’cita Willey and the tried and tested candied orange peel recipe. Remember to keep wearing a mask and wash hands regularly. South Africa recently moved to level 2 of lockdown restrictions which has opened up many businesses and industries so that from an economic point of view the economy can start recovering but COVID-19 remains an ever-present threat. Stay safe and remember to send your suggestions and contributions to aroundyousa@gmail.com. “Life is a circle of happiness, sadness, hard times and good times. if you are going through hard times have faith that good times are on the way”.

OLIVE AND GRAPE ONLINE BOUTIQUE STORE Interview with Nadia Martins - Managing Director of Olive and Grape Good morning Nadia, tell us a little about yourself? I am the founder of NDJ Consultants, a consulting and skills development firm as well as MPowrMe, an e-and mobile learning platform. With both companies, our area of expertise lies in management studies and professional skills designed to assist companies in achieving desired outcomes through focusing people on organisational visions and improving strategic intent, professional conduct, working relationships and culture, in order to boost productivity and profitability.

Due to my father being a successful businessman, I was introduced to the concept of business and its operations at a very young age which equipped me to start my first company, NDJ Consultants, at the age of 19 after which I obtained my qualifications and business expertise on a part-time basis that assisted and strengthened by ability to turn my dream into a sustainable, well-known company in the education sector.

My vision is to continuously grow and develop organisations and people through the delivery of high-quality products and services to enable companies to increase their efficiency and operational performance. Even though I am very passionate about my career, I love to travel and explore new places, spending quality time with my husband and our two huskies (my fur babies) at our home in Irene and making time to socialise with my friends. Having a good work-life balance has always been very important to me to be able to recharge and lead a balanced, well-rounded life. Olive and Grape is my third company, which I will tell you more about later in the interview. What gets you up in the morning and what or who inspires you? I am very fortunate in the sense that I truly love what I do, so just being able to get up in the morning and pursue my career goals, getting creative and interacting with my clients is all the motivation I need. Just like everyone else, I have my downtimes where being happy and motivated seems like a daunting task – on these days, I focus on all my blessings which tends to lift my spirit instantly. Who inspired me? This is truly very difficult to answer, because I cannot single anyone out. I do not have one person who I can call my role model, but rather a network of people that inspire me in different areas of my life. For example: my husband - his

dedication, passion, knowledge and insight is a true source of inspiration, especially in business, my parents - are my greatest supporters, even if I feel something can’t be done they make me see that all is possible, my friends - each one with unique character traits, inspire me with their wisdom, strength and zest for life. The point is, every person that crosses my path, does so for a reason and I am so incredibly grateful to have such a strong network of people in my life that I draw my strength from. What is your favourite home cooked meal? My two ultimate favourites has to be oxtail and samp, and of course nothing beats a crispy lamb chop, a traditional braai broodjie and a milk tart for dessert. What has your experience been like during lockdown? Being the owner of three companies, it has been an emotional roller coaster ride having to deal with questions such as: what if my cash flow dries up, what if my clients do not have sufficient funds to renew our contract or make use of our product or service offerings? What impact will the economy have on my future plans? The list goes on and on … But at the same time, it could possibly be the best thing that ever happened, because I was forced to take a break from the rat race and social obligations (something that hardly ever happens in the fast-paced ‘real’ world that we live in) and because of this, I had a lot of time to think and reflect.

AROUND YOU

When your businesses have been blessed with recurring income, you sometimes get stuck in a comfort zone and the drive to take your business to the next level or rethink the way you currently operate gets pushed aside, because why change something that already works well right? So, during lockdown, I made it a priority to allocate time for strategic rethinking and resetting of goals to place us in a stronger position to recover and keep our service and product offerings relevant to the everchanging market needs and environments we operate within. Putting those extra hours into something productive helped me to change my mindset and to become excited about the future instead of being fearful of what lies ahead.

reassure me that I’m doing the right thing and this is the journey He planned for me. Secondly, we are able to support and help smaller non-commercial farms, local suppliers, family-owned businesses and even Eagle Encounters (a wildlife rehabilitation centre in Stellenbosch), not just through the sales of their various products but also by playing an active part in creating awareness around the various industries we support. Our initial plan was to launch at the end of March, but due to level 5 lockdown the launch was postponed and we finally launched on 28 April.

How long has Olive and Grape been operating and what made you start the company? I am extremely passionate about South African farmers, farm life, artisans, entrepreneurs, small businesses and of course the South African wine industry, so I thought to myself, how can I turn this into a successful business while at the same time, support those I feel passionate about? Needless to say, two years later, Olive and Grape was born. Olive and Grape is a very special company for two main reasons. First of all, it has been an incredible spiritual journey where I could feel God’s hand and guidance every step of the way, even during times when I experienced doubt, subtle (and not so subtle) messages were sent my way to

AROUND YOU

Since Olive and Grape is an online boutique store what is the process a user would need to follow to place an order?

What else does Olive and Grape sell other than olive oil and wine and what brands do you stock?

Our online store is very user-friendly and easy to navigate through, all you have to do is visit www.oliveandgrape.co.za, browse through the various product categories, add your desired products to your shopping basket and proceed to checkout where you will be asked to enter your billing and delivery address and make a secure online payment.

Our main focus areas are: wine, olives and olive oil, coffee and chocolate to give consumers a wine route experience in the comfort of their own home.

We deliver nationwide and free shipping is included on all purchases over R1000.

For each focus area we sell a variety of associated products such as deli products, bath and beauty products, fashion items and creative add-ons. With the liquor ban, the application for our liquor licence was delayed and therefore, our wine selection will only be available from mid-December once our licence is issued. Why an online store? Where do you see Olive and Grape in 5 years’ time? Our plan was originally to open a retail outlet in Irene. After careful consideration based on market/consumer trends, we decided to launch an online store as a starting point. Depending on the growth of our online store as well as economic recovery, retail outlets in selected areas are definitely in the pipeline where clients will be able to enjoy a unique shopping experience. Thank you Nadia for the interview, may Olive and Grape go from strength to strength and let’s chat again soon. ~ Kathy

TRAVELS WITH AN OLD MAN Written by Emmay Golding

“And Mrs. Golding?” the steward queries. He is poised over us with a tray of drinks, but everyone in hearing range has picked up the emphasis on “Mrs”. We know what the real question is, as his eyes flick from me to the man sitting next to me. My travelling companion is twice my age and shares my surname. Dad has stumped up for premium economy. I travel steerage on my own buck and am not used to this kind of attention. “Miss”, I correct miserably, opting for spinsterhood over “gold-digging hussy” as the lesser of two evils. And, just to make sure he and everyone are clear, “I’ll take the same as my father please”. The old man perks up at getting a mention. Until now he’s been distracted trying to plug his earphones into his seatbelt clip. Surprisingly, given how he’s been occupying himself, he grasps the situation immediately. He gives a series of ribald chuckles, visibly preening under the misunderstanding. It may be a daughter’s point of view, but lechery does not sit well on my father. We are on route to visit my brother. Our journey did not get off to an auspicious start. I went through security first, at my

father’s insistence. I was replacing my laptop, only to glance behind me and see him surrounded by security personnel. Their scanner picked up something and they need to open his luggage. Now I know for a fact, that my sister went to great lengths to ensure Dad knew about the 100ml liquids rule. And Dad knows I know. “Dad have you got something in your bag you shouldn’t have?” “No, no, no,” he replies with wide-eyed innocence but breaks eye contact with me at the last minute. It’s good to know he has some measure of conscience. We remove the one-litre bottle of sunscreen from his hand luggage. He can’t resist belligerently pointing out that it cost less than my 100ml tube. I decide to let it go in the interests of a smooth passage. But it is not to be. “Your daddy has a knife” whispers the nice security lady to me confidentially, smiling sweetly at Crazy Sunscreen Guy. “Dad they’re saying you have a knife in your bag?” Again, the wide-eyed innocent act. Truly, my mother was a saint. The outline of my parents’ favourite kitchen utility knife is there on the screen in black and white for us all to see. Australia seems like a very long way away.

A CHANGE OF FEELING, IS A CHANGE OF DESTINY Written by N’cita Willey| N’cita Willey Intuitive Counselling Today I want to remind you that we can ultimately change our course in life and our destinies when we change our feelings. You might be wondering, but how do I do this? Well it is imperative that you start training your mind to ONLY think and more importantly, feel the thoughts that you would like to manifest in your life. Feeling the reality of that which you are seeking and then living and acting on that conviction, is the way of all apparent miracles. All changes of expression are brought about through a change of feeling. A change of feeling is a change of destiny. All creation occurs in the domain of the subconscious mind. What you must acquire, then, is a reflective control of the operation of the subconscious, thus, control of your ideas/thoughts and feelings. Neville Goddard says: "Whatever the mind of man can conceive and feel as true, the subconscious can and must objectify." Experts estimate that the mind thinks between 60 000 – 80 000 thoughts per day, which is an average of 2500 –

3300 thoughts per hour. Now it is absolutely impossible for us to know each and every thought we think, so how do we change our thoughts if we aren’t even aware of what we think of every moment of every day? This is where our emotions and feelings come in. Our emotions/feelings are our BEST FRIEND; it tells us what we are actually thinking about. Whenever you experience a negative emotion, you must teach yourself to stop for a second, and ask yourself: "Why am I feeling this particular emotion, in other words, what am I thinking about right now?" And boom! You will immediately get your answer to your negative emotion. You are most probably thinking about something that you don't want or stressing about the future or pondering something negative about the past. But now you have the power! You can change this! Change your thoughts immediately to something that you do want in life or if you are obsessing about the future, keep on reminding yourself, that you are exactly where

AROUND YOU

you need to be, and everything always works out for you. And if you can't seem to let go of the past, be kind to yourself and remind yourself that it isn't worth it to hold on to things that aren't serving you, it's time to let go of all the thoughts that aren't serving you. Then this change of thought, will lead to a change in emotion. And you can also declare and commit to yourself that "I CHOOSE TO FEEL BETTER! I CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY NOW!" and allow yourself to feel better. Then this change in emotion/feeling, will lead to a change in your energy, which then will lead to a change in your life. You deserve to be happy and live your best life! Remember, I can help you with this process and teach you techniques on how to change your energy, so that you have the power to change your life. Get in touch today to book your session.

MESSAGE TO BUSINESS OWNERS & LEADERS DURING LOCKDOWN Nadia Martins | NDJ Consultants and MPowrMe

Being the owner of three companies, I fully understand the stress and anxiety currently experienced by most business owners and leaders …. What if my cash flow dries up? What if my clients do not have sufficient funds to renew my contract or make use of my product or service offerings? What impact will the economy have on my future plans? the list goes on and on.

because why change something that already works well right? Even though your business might be sustainable at this point in time (or at least before the lockdown) doesn’t mean it will be sustainable in the longrun because we live in an everchanging world filled with trends and technology.

The fact is, yes, it won’t be easy, but it can possibly be the best thing that ever happened to your business, and here is why?

Yet, in an exceptionally dynamic, interconnected and global world, long-term thinking is critical to framing strategies and preparing for unforeseen challenges.

A lot of times when your business has been blessed with recurring income, you get stuck in a comfort zone and the drive to take your business to the next level or rethink the way you currently operate gets pushed aside,

One of the most important skills that business leaders need to develop for long-term success in these changing times is foresight. Foresight enables you to look at your industry and

business, and its operations and determine its relevance 10 years from now (so it goes beyond strategic thinking and plans which is normally limited to 5 years). It is a capacity that organisations on every level of society should develop to distinguish important signals from noise and to prepare for uncertainty and disruption. When determining what your industry will look like within the next 10 years, it allows you the opportunity to adapt in a gradual way to prepare yourself for the changes that lies ahead so that your business does not become extinct (like a dinosaur) or where major competitors own a bigger market share because they were able to adapt early on to related market changes, making it impossible to survive at all.

the fast-paced ‘real’ world that we live in) – use this time for strategic rethinking and resetting of goals. Survival will rely on understanding exactly how to evolve, choosing a future before it chooses you, as it surely will. The only way to effectively respond to the external environment is to be properly prepared for what is coming your way, being crystal clear how it will impact your business and how you will adapt accordingly. None of us can assume that the future will be ‘business as usual’ but we can put ourselves in a total state of preparedness for what lies ahead. Remember: Change is the mother of invention.

You are given the gift of time (something that hardly ever happens in

I was peeling an orange the other day and not wanting to discard the peel I decided to look on the internet to find out what I could make with the peel. Candied orange peel popped up in my search and so I decided to start trying to make it. I have attempted this recipe a few times and every time I have learnt something new. The first time I made the recipe, I had very roughly peeled the orange so when it came to cutting the peel into pieces I had many different sizes. It is definitely better to have uniformity in size. I also used naartjie skin the one time which is thinner than orange peel and as a result is a bit chewy and has less citrus flavour. AROUND YOU

CANDIED ORANGE PEEL Contributed by Kathy O’Connor

INGREDIENTS 2 orange peels (peel the orange in four) Water For sugar syrup: ½ cup water ½ cup white sugar

DIRECTIONS Once peeled cut the peel into similar sized strips. Rinse the peel in water. Cover the strips in boiling water and boil for 5 minutes. Rinse the strips in cold water. Again cover the strips in boiling water and boil again for a further 5 minutes. Rinse the strips in cold water. In a pot add sugar and boiling water. Dissolve sugar. Add peel and let it cook on a medium heat for approximately 15 minutes. Keep an eye on it, don’t let the pot run dry. Remove peel from the sugar syrup and place on drying rack (place baking tray underneath to catch any syrup). It takes up to 2 days for the peel to dry. Once dry cut into small pieces and keep for decoration on cakes or add to oat porridge with cinnamon – delicious.
