Norway’s ambition is to be decarbonized and become a low emission society. Access to renewable energy is one of the prerequisites for managing this.
Norway is blessed with ideal conditions for offshore wind, having a long coastline and exposure to strong Nordic winds. This makes the country ideal for offshore wind electricity generation. Norway has identified offshore wind as a key opportunity to increase its production of electricity from renewable sources, to diversify its industrial base, but also creating new jobs and economical benefits.

Our company name is inspired by the water naval plant (Skjoldblad in Norwegian), which grows in the harsh western Norwegian coastal environment. The plant is considered to be near threatened. It is a plant that can withstand sea spray, and, on a stem, the leaves grow together in a community. The plant represents what we at Skjoldblad stand for: strength, growth and interaction, which are central factors in the work of building a strong offshore wind industry in Norway. The logo is inspired by the shape of the historical and traditional windmills and the water naval plant. The word Skjoldblad consists of “shield” and “blade”. Together with the logo, it is an expression of the consortium’s commitment to exploiting wind energy through pioneering industrial technology.
The name and our logo signify our commitment to the successful development of a Norwegian offshore wind industry, creation of local jobs, and the use of pioneering industrial technology to harness and deliver clean green energy, to Norwegian industry and consumers.
We are living in unprecedented times, where climate change threatens the vulnerable environment on which our very existence depends. It is Skjoldblad’s mission to reduce carbon emissions and tackle climate change through the generation of new, clean, offshore wind power that will also create green jobs in the process.
At Skjoldblad, our approach to offshore wind development, construction, and operation is one that focuses on the long-term. We believe in building an offshore wind industry that has a strong local footing where developers, the supplier community, authorities, academic institutions, and other key stakeholders work together to deliver a new, shared, enduring, industrial vision.
We will focus on strengthening local industrial expertise, developing Norway’s supply chain, and generating new, green, local jobs. Skjoldblad will utilise its owners’ extensive experience in delivering commercial scale wind projects across the globe. This could come in the form of new jobs or involve us helping workers to make the transition from oil and gas, into offshore wind.
Utsira North will be developed around 25 km off the coast of Karmøy with an expected capacity of around 1,500 MW.
Due to the high-water depths in Utsira North, the projects which are developed and constructed here in the future will deploy floating offshore wind technology and are expected to be generating first electricity around 2030. Technology development and innovation will play a key role in any development in Utsira North. With Skjoldblad’s excellent track record in on- and offshore wind deployment, and our focus on technological advancement and innovation, we are very well positioned to take on this significant responsibility.
Southern North Sea II is located approximately 140 km off the coast of the Agder Region and is expected to be developed in two phases, each phase having a capacity of around 1,500 MW.
Due to the shallow water depths in Southern North Sea II, the projects which are developed and constructed here will deploy bottom-fixed wind technology and are expected to be generating first electricity by around 2030. We will be focused on efficient use of area for power production, and not only on installed production capacity.
To us, innovation means proactively identifying better ways to deliver our projects using local solutions, the deployment of new technology, and development of more efficient systems and processes.
Skjoldblad intends to deploy the best available technologies to mitigate and monitor the environmental and societal impacts of Utsira North and SN II offshore wind farms during all project phases. Our project delivery model is based on sound environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. We will take prudent steps to protect nature and the environments we operate within, with great care and utmost attention.
We believe in a long-term industrial approach with a local supply chain, where developers, authorities, and other key stakeholders collaborate.
The expertise and technology from Norway’s oil and gas sector will help to drive this new offshore wind industry forward. We expect that local suppliers and research institutions, together with developers, will create a strong value chain that will result in the emergence of innovative and cost-effective technology solutions.
The development of the oil & gas sector in Norway provided opportunities to develop Norwegian based competence and technology, serving not only domestic requirements, but it also paved the way for significant internationalisation of a strong Norwegian supplier industry. A similar development is envisaged with respect to offshore wind, whereby the capabilities and capacities from oil & gas can be capitalised on, and transformed into a new major industry in Norway.
Skjoldblad has significant experience in engaging with supplier communities and developing strong local value chains. We will work with suppliers, research institutions, and academia in Norway to stimulate innovation by drawing upon the wider global expertise of our owners in the process. Through their worldwide presence, Iberdrola, the Valinor group, and TotalEnergies have already proven to be a door opener for Norwegian suppliers globally, providing them with access to key international markets.
In our pursuit of innovative and cost-efficient development, construction, and operational solutions, our approach is one that is open and technology neutral. This applies to both floating and bottom-fixed installations, whether steel or concrete by design, as well as turbine technology, mooring design, cabling solutions, substations design, operations & maintenance approach, and related monitoring.
