Hayari and partner Alard with Mrs. Russia, Alisa Krylova
Blushing Brides Make Guests Blush with a Hayari Couture By Slavica Monczka

mong all the finer things in life produced in France, fashion tops the list. Not only the simple ready to wear, but more importantly the jaw-dropping haute couture. If there is ever a luxury in fashion worth splurging on, then that would be a dress by Paris based Hayari Couture. Nabil Hayari designs spectacular wedding and evening dresses for women with discerning taste, and a desire to impress all with such sensational gowns. Hayari’s clientele are international woman of wealth and prestige yearning to be sexy and glamorous for a special occasion or for their very own wedding. Women from Russia, China, and the US call upon Hayari with a request to transform them into a princess for a day. Hayari Couture carries the official “haute couture” certification by the French government, ensuring and upholding the authentic and artistic quality of this talent. For these reasons, it is typical that the dresses run well into the tens of thousands of dollars and often takes an average of five months to complete. At my recent visit in his atelier in Paris, I asked designer Hayari, why do people go to the expense and time of haute couture? Why not simply indulge in a high-end designer brand? “It is a woman’s worst nightmare to show up at an important event wearing the same thing as another woman,” he reminds me. Nabil is very familiar with the fact that a woman would rather set fire to her own hair than to arrive at an event wearing the same dress as another. Oh, the horror! “All the details are very important,” Hayari explains. “We embroider 14 | Upscale Living Magazine | April 2012 digital issue
by hand, and use noble fabrics,” states Hayari of the significance in his designs. “La doublure fabric inside (lining) is silk because when it touches the skin, it is very agreeable!” These hand placed details are time consuming but it is what makes them so exceptional. “The red dress, the fabric is silk taffeta and all the flowers are made by hand. It took more than 800 flowers made by hand,” Hayari proudly claims in his sweet French accent I so love. Fine French lace, feathers, and Swarovski crystals are some of the extraordinary details that adorn these elaborate gowns. With each dress, Hayari completes the look with complimenting accessories. New to Hayari Couture is their fragrance Only For Her, which will be making its debut here in the states at this year’s Golden Globe Awards available exclusively for nominees and presenters of the event. Created by Hayari in Grasse, France, the eau de perfume features “oriental florals and is evocative of Hayari’s childhood memories of jasmine growing in his own gardens.” It is a lovely floral scent that compliments his feminine dresses. A great big merci to Nabil Hayari and partner Hugues Alard for their gracious hospitality while in Paris, and for my very own bottle of Only For Her. Now, when my Hayari dress comes off, the scent still lingers. “A dress makes no sense unless it inspires men to want to take it off of you.” –Francoise Sagan

The collection is influenced by celebrated heiresses, with each family of handbags featuring distinctively classic lines and rich, beautiful colors such as Navy, Fawn and Bordeaux. LIVE LIKE A PRINCESS ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA FOR $28 MILLION
F
| By Slavica Monczka
or those of you looking to splurge on a vacation home, look no further. Have I found a place for you! Let’s just say, it is located in paradise, a.k.a. the French Riviera. Luxury does have its price so for the 21 million Euros, which is nearly $28 million USD today, you shall receive a home fit for a princess, literally. “The owner is one of the most famous and beautiful princesses,” states Irina Alekseeva of Sadaka Exclusive Realty agent representing the majestic villa off the glorious Côte d’Azur. First thing first, I wanted to cut to the chase to know why the princess, who shall remain nameless for the sake of privacy, would sell such a beautiful property minutes away from world-renowned Monte Carlo. In the back of my mind I envision a stunning young lady, resembling Eva Green dressed in an evening gown in Casino Royale, sipping champagne off the terrace during sunset, overlooking the sparkling sea and twinkling city lights. “She is very involved with charity work,” explains Alekseeva, “she wants to invest her money in one of her charity projects.” If you are not writing out that check yet to purchase the home after learning of such a generous deed sure to accept the princess into the sanctity of sainthood, then allow me illustrate for you more. This palatial estate includes the basics you
REAL ESTATE would expect, such as original marble fireplaces, numerous large and spacious rooms, a pool with a guest house, and a private beach, just to name a few. From any one of the picturesque terraces or patios, the views are breathtaking!
in the late 19th century by prominent architect Hans-Georg Tersling. Well known for much of his work on the French Riviera of that time, Tersling was commissioned by European aristocrats and elitists for his designs from mansions to hotels you find scattered across the highly desirable coastline. Monte-Carlo Casino
Views from the Villa. “It would be paradise,” Alekseeva declares in her charming French accent when asked what it would be like to live in this elegant manor. “You wake up in the morning in your room to views of a blue, peaceful sea,” Alekseeva continues illustrating for me what you can expect for a typical day in this prestigious locale. “You enjoy breakfast on the beach, later plans with friends for a barbeque. For the evening, you put on a beautiful dress and invite your business partners to champagne. Later, accompanied by your driver, you are off to the famous Monte Carlo Casino where you enjoy the most famous opera in the world. Near midnight, a beautiful table in the best restaurant is waiting for you.” I suddenly think of Eva Green once again, only this time I am she and my driver is the 007 agent himself dressed in a tux as we race down the winding seaside drive! “You have a great image of Monaco, and you are right,” Alekseeva laughs! “It is the most famous place in the world for the exceptional people and for a unique life style.” Located in the one of the most exclusive communities in the French Riviera, Domaine Prive du Cap-Martin, this historic villa was built
The accomplished architect knew that the cultured and wealthy holiday homeowners on the French Rivera demanded quality, as evident in the exposed stone structure and the room layouts that captures the natural light gleaming from windows throughout this chateau, a must on the Mediterranean Sea. Alekseeva is well experienced in representing these luxury properties for her high-profile clients from Paris, to Monaco and even to other cosmopolitan cities like Geneva, London and our very own Miami. Again without mentioning names, most of her clients are on the Forbes list. Due to the high priced residential properties, the savvy and sophisticated Alekseeva chooses to represent only the distinguished to be able to give them her full attention in the process. Alekseeva has built relationships within each location for an irreproachable experience for the sale and purchase of her client’s properties. Currently, Alekseeva’s listings range from a 1 million Euro pied-à-terre in Paris to a 100 million Euros mansion near Monaco she calls “a piece of art.” Gasp! These pictures can try, but do not do the lavish villa the justice it deserves. Often purchased as a secondary home, Alekseeva explains of the properties on the French Riviera, “it is not only the villa you buy; you buy your social position and a security which is the best in the world.” The down or volatile global economy does not affect her listings much at all. “Monaco is the most secure place in the world for you and your finances, and for the life of your family,” Alekseeva confidently states. “The highest level of education for your children, great climate, entertainment all year round from the Grand Prix to the best restaurants, art galleries and events,” boasts Alekseeva. If the best location is key in real estate, then the French Riviera is the place to be. However, if you are already fortunate enough to have a villa there, no worries as Alekseeva has more to offer at www. sadakarealty.com

The Latest Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Paris Luxury Presidential Suite at $26k A Night
| By Slavica Monczka The latest and greatest addition to Paris, France in luxury hotel properties is the Mandarin Oriental; a modern Parisian “that is infused with a subtle air of exoticism and romance.” Yes, they grabbed my attention here as well. If not for those words, then a visit to their presidential suite would most certainly lure anyone. As a recent patron of the establishment, I can attest to this romantic and modern attribute of Paris in everything from the décor, to the amenities, to the cuisine of their restaurants. For a segment in my upcoming televised show, Seductively French, I was graciously welcomed by the hotel’s General Manager, Philippe Leboeuf, for a personal tour of the grounds and discuss its sophisticated elegance. With refined luxury at its core, this Mandarin is seducing guests far and wide, as celebrities and the most affluent people in the world are flocking now to Mandarin Oriental, Paris to experience what they call “a new Paris.” My experience in the crème de la crème of all presidential suites, The Suite Royale Mandarin, was so over the top I (half) jokingly told Leboeuf I was never going to leave. “We want our guests to feel this way,” he reassures me with a charming smile. However at 20,000 Euros a night, I was able to at least enjoy the moment
as an invited guest. For those curious, that would be over $26,000 US dollars in today’s conversion, per night. This suite totals over 3200 square feet, includes a bar, dining room, a study, private gym and steam room. Moving up, picture this: Vast 360 degree views of Paris from the suite’s rooftop patio. I see Montmartre, the Louvre, Beaubourg, and no view of Paris would be complete without the Eiffel Tower, flirtatiously twinkling at me that special night. Dashing décor adorn with fine marble, silk, and art everywhere. “Every piece of furniture has been designed for this suite,” describes Leboeuf. It charmed the pants right off me (the suite, when I was alone, not Mr. Leboeuf) so I took a bubble bath with their luscious toiletries, and sipped champagne while watching the Eiffel flirt with me, again. The Mandarin is modern in design and décor but Leboeuf states, “we wanted to still be very Parisian, and romantic. We have our savior-faire and Oriental heritage but we want to portray to be very Parisian, hence all the couture elements.” The one couture detail that blew me away was the headboard in the bedroom featuring silk hand embroidery of artist Man Ray’s Neck by the legendary Maison Lesage that took an unbelievable 650 hours to complete. These truly artistic and glamorous interiors Mandarin describes as “haute couture decoration, distinguished by extreme attention to detail.” Would you expect anything less from the French anyway, or from a Mandarin Oriental for that matter? The Mandarin Oriental, Paris is not what you would imagine for a typical Parisian hotel. It is not flamboyant and fussy, nor overly ornate and grandiloquent. It is however, elegant, inviting, and pleasing to the eyes from the time you enter the lobby and throughout. “I think the ‘Wow’ effect from visitors is certainly what strikes me the most,” describes Leboeuf of the reaction he gets from a visitor’s first time at the hotel. “People want to see something new, something different in Paris.” Evident, as it is the place to see and be seen at in Paris, according to all the celeb sightings in just over their one-year anniversary. Some names of visitors I can mention include Liam Neeson, Queen Latifah, Maggie Cheung, and French classical pianist Hélène Grimaud. During my time spent there, my celeb sighting was the lovely French actress Catherine Deneuve chatting over drinks with friends in the garden. Ah yes, the garden. To me, it is a Zen-like escape from the big city with an abundance of vegetation seemingly transporting you to yet another paradise. The restaurant Camélia is a “continuation of the indoor landscaped garden,” and is one of two under Executive Chef, the awarding winning Thierry Marx. I very much enjoyed my dinner there of scallops in “the essence of white truffle,” but can you hardly be surprised? The dish was a sort of East meets West (much like the hotel itself) where Marx’s intent was to blend ingredients common to French cuisine to that of the culinary traditions of Japan. Sur Mesure par Thierry Marx is the restaurant not to be missed. I don’t know if I can say I was more impressed with the fare or the stunning design. The space is entirely white, as it is “the ultimate symbol of timeless elegance.” If you can get past the impressive design décor to enjoy another sensory pleasure, be sure to try the Soya Risotto, and the L’Oeuf Éclat. Feel free to send me a thank you for this suggestion any time after your visit. All in all, it is an exquisite place to stay while in Paris, as it is also centrally located, near the best shopping and site seeing. It is
a symbol of what they refer to as “a new Paris” with an eclectic touch from the art it houses, to the cuisine they serve, to its Oriental aura. Leboeuf stresses to me that quality service is the “very essence of hospitality,” and at the end of the day this is exactly what a visitor wants from a luxury hotel. Thank you to Philippe Leboeuf and staff for all their generosity and warm reception. Until we meet again Mandarin, where I can wallow in your “subtle air of exoticism and romance,” I shall visit you in my sweet dreams. And you can visit them at www. mandarinoriental.com/paris/ For more from Seductively French, to go www.seductivelyfrench.com/home ..........................................................................

London’s Hotels Classic vs. Contemporary | By Emma Dance
A diverse and cosmopolitan city, rich in culture and history, London attracts millions of visitors every year. And with new hotels springing up across the British capital all the time tourists are spoilt for choice over where to lay their head. Emma Dance looks at two very different, but equally luxurious London hotels – one the epitome English tradition in glamorous Mayfair, the other sleek and chic in an up and coming area of the city. Classic: Grosvenor House
G
rosvenor House is a quintessentially English Hotel, the epitome of period glamour. Originally built to accommodate the first trans-Atlantic passengers the hotel first opened in 1929. Since then it has become a destination it is own right and has been frequented by all manner of VIPs, from film stars to royalty, who have been drawn to the hotel by its sumptuous interiors, high standards of service and enviable Park Lane location. And with its stunning Great Room the hotel hosts the star studded BAFTA award ceremony each year. Grosvenor House underwent an extensive renovation, which was finally completed in 2008 when it became part of the Marriott family. But despite the work, the hotel has lost none of its charms. As soon as you arrive, entering through wrought iron gates, making your way through the stately courtyard to be greeted by a doorman in a traditional top hat, there can be no doubt that this is somewhere that truly understands the meaning of luxury and elegance. With its polished marble floors, antique furniture and works of art adorning the walls the reception area is striking, and the opulent feel extends to the bedrooms. All are furnished in a traditional English style with sumptuous fabrics and period furniture. The bathrooms have been restored using top quality marble, which only adds to the luxury. Some of the most elegant rooms are the suites which boast views over Hyde Park. But although the style may hark back to the past, there is no shortage of modern touches with flat screen televisions, on demand movies, climate control and high speed internet access. For the ultimate English experience then trying the award winning afternoon tea, served in the Park Room is a must. As the name suggests it overlooks Hyde Park, making it one of the best places in city to enjoy the English tradition. And the Park Room is not the only dining venue in the hotel to boast an award. Corrigan’s Mayfair, headed up by well-known British chef Richard Corrigan, has also won a host of accolades for its menu inspired by the old hunting lodges of Germany, but which uses ingredients from artisan British producers. For a less formal dining experience there is the JW Steakhouse. Serving up hand cut selections of dry-aged American USDA prime beef the fare might not be traditional English, but it is certainly delicious. And if you feel the need to work off some of the calories then there is a well-equipped gym. Although over the years Grosvenor House has undergone many changes to make suitable for the modern traveller seeking top class accommodation it has lost none of it period elegance and charm. And it is this elegance and charm which has not only earned the hotel the reputation of one of the most luxurious hotels in London, but allowed it to keep this reputation for so many years. Contemporary: Andaz Liverpool Street
T
he exploits of unsalubrious types such as Jack the Ripper and Sweeney Todd have not done the east of London many favours. It is traditionally shunned by visitors who prefer to spend their time among the bright lights of the West End or the palaces of Westminster. But although historically the area may not have had the most glamorous of reputations that is now changing, the area is seeing a great deal of new investment and it is fast becoming the place to be seen. And as the creative types have moved in, so too have many chic boutiques, excellent restaurants and trendy bars. Leading the charge was the Andaz Liverpool Street which first opened its doors at the end of 2007. Just a short walk from trendy Shoreditch and Spitalfields market, almost in the shadow of the iconic Gherkin building in the City of London, and with the famous Indian restaurants of Brick Lane just around the corner and plenty of tourist attractions, such as the Tower of London all within easy reach you would be hard pressed to find a better location. And it is not only the location that marks Andaz Liverpool Street as a new breed of modern London hotels. Housed in a beautiful Victorian red brick building dating back to 1884, from the outside it looks like many other traditional hotels. But once inside you could be forgiven for thinking that you’d entered a trendy coffee bar instead of a luxury hotel. Gone is the usual formal check-in desk and instead you will be whisked to the Andaz Lounge with its comfortable seating and low lighting and an immaculate and stylish member of staff will check you in on an iPad while you enjoy a drink, which is an altogether more pleasant and personal experience. The styling at the Andaz is all about the contemporary. Rising up above the lounge is a bright white, Guggenheim inspired rotunda, and the furniture is sleek and modern. The bedrooms are quite minimalist and decorated in a rather utilitarian grey, which could have been rather dull and uninspiring were it not for the flashes of bright red in the furnishings. There is very little in the way of paper work in the rooms instead, hotel information and room service menus are all on the television and there is free wireless internet access throughout the hotel. But while the hotel has all the mod cons, fortunately there are no baffling panels of buttons to frighten technophobes and everything is very easy to operate. The hotel is even doing its bit for the environment with a vacuum flush system in the bathroom which saves water. There is a complimentary minibar stocked with soft drinks and jars of snacks as an extra treat. Not that there’s really any need for extra snacks as there are no less than five restaurants and bars in the Andaz to suit every taste. The 1901 Restaurant and Wine Bar serves British fine dining, while Miyako dishes up Japanese cuisine. Guests can dine on seafood in Catch and enjoy a modern brasserie grillstyle menu in Eastway or for those who want a quintessentially British experience there is the George with its pub fare – one of the hotel’s only nods to tradition. And if you want to work off some extra calories after over indulging then there is a health club with a state-of-the-art gym as well as a spa offering Anne Semonin beauty treatments. The Andaz is a far cry from the stereotypical English hotel, full of chintz and charm, but it is sleek, stylish – a perfect representation of modern London. Cigars and Port A Couple of Luxuries | By Jennifer Jordan
C
igars and alcohol have been a dynamic duo for thousands of years. From scotch and a Montecristo to brandy and a H. Upmann, they have been escorting each other to weddings, galas, and celebrations all over the world. Though there are shelves of alcohol that go well with cigars, there is one that smokers often overlook: Port wine. Sitting in the back of a wine cellar simply waiting for someone to drink in its glory, port wine knows it important when it comes to cigars. Nearly as sweet as a spoonful of sugar, Port would probably have been the preference of Mary Poppins had she let her hair down and decided to have a drink. Known also as Vinho do Porto, Oporto, and Porto, Port is fortified wine hailing from the northern parts of Portugal. Though there are Port-like wines made in other countries, such as the US, Portugal lays claim to true Port. The others are, in a simple alliteration, Port Posers. Made from grapes in the Douro Valley, Port has a long and colorful history. Produced in Portugal since the mid 1400’s, it didn’t gain popularity until the Methuen Treaty of 1703. A treaty that was used to – as treaties are known to do – solve war related conflicts, this agreement also put Port on the European map by strengthening the Port wine trade. Soon, England was very important to the world of Port. The process of making port is an arduous one. It initially involves picking grapes, smashing them (don’t worry, they use stunt doubles), and then placing the remnants in a tank where they are chopped further into tiny pieces. After sitting in this tank for close to twenty-four hours, the grapes begin to ferment and their sugar evolves into something else: alcohol. With Port wine, after fermentation begins, timing takes over. This is where Port becomes somewhat special and a whole lot different. Once half of the grape’s sugar has been converted, fermentation must be stopped. In order to do this, the wine is mixed with clear brandy containing a proof of 150. The alcohol in the brandy kills the yeast in the wine, causing fermentation to cease. The ending result is a wine that is sweeter and higher in alcohol content than most. Though there are many styles of Port - White Port, Ruby Port, Young Tawny Port, Aged Tawny Port, Vintage Character Port, Late Bottled Vintage Port, Traditional Late Bottled Vintage Port, Vintage Port, Single Quinta Vintage Port, Crusted Port, and Garrafeira Port - most styles fall into two broad categories: Bottle aged or Cask aged. Because doing the tiniest thing different will result in a different taste of wine, the two Port processes greatly dictate the flavorful outcome. While Bottle aged Ports generally behave like wine on Botox, keeping their color and their fruitiness well into maturity, Cask aged Ports lose flavor quickly. They are ready to drink right away and should be consumed quickly. Some of the best Ports to know are the Taylor Fladgate Tawny Port, W. & J. Graham’s Tawny Port, Smith Woodhouse Vintage Character Port, Niepoort Vintage Port, Quinta do Infantado Single Quinta Vintage Port, and Adriano Ramos-Pinto Late Bottled Vintage Port. Port wine, because of its innate sweetness, is usually served with desserts, and cheese. But, when accompanied with a cigar (hand rolled ones make a particularly ideal pairing), desserts don’t hold a candle and the cheese, as a Tawny Port ditches a block of cheddar for a Camacho Corojo, stands alone. * 58
