JESSICA MARKOWSKI Living The American Dream | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS

Starring in the Netflix series Owning Manhattan, Jessica Markowski tells Upscale Living magazine what it feels like to live the American dream.

| UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ INE | JULY/ AUG 2024

P ROF ILE

Jessica, tell us a bit about yourself. I am a native New Yorker, born to Polish immigrants and raised in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. As a first-generation American immigrant, I have a tireless work ethic and love for New York City. I have built my online following through my work on several projects, including being the Head of Communications for Screenshop, a company co-founded by Kim Kardashian and sold to Snapchat in 2021. Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path? My biggest influence was my immigrant family who came here to America with an ‘American Dream’. My family’s hard work and dedication has helped to shape every aspect of my career journey. How did end up being a luxury real estate agent? I joined Serhant a few years ago. I was given the opportunity to work on amazing highend projects. Currently, I work with the top producing team at Serhant, called Bogard New York.

1

Please tell us how you seamlessly merge your experience in the fashion industry with selling luxury real estate. I have a very good understanding of branding and marketing. My experience in the fashion industry taught me how to interact and engage with clients and how to present and market myself. These skills serve me daily with selling luxury real estate. I feel grateful that I was able to intertwine my interests for fashion and real estate and cohesively include both in my career. Please share your heartwarming story from your family’s Polish immigrant roots to becoming a successful real estate agent in Manhattan. My parents came to America in the late 80’s. Their goal was to own a home in America. This led my family to become landlords in NYC. As a kid, I would always play a part in home improvements for our tenants. Real estate was the natural next venture for me as it was what I grew up doing! Has your upbringing in Brooklyn influenced your career in Manhattan’s high-stakes real

estate market? I grew up in Brooklyn and was fortunate to get into a middle school on the upper east side of Manhattan. Experiencing the differences in cultures allowed me to mature and understand the high-stakes pressure of making it in NYC. You star in the Netflix series Owning Manhattan. How does your extensive real estate experience lend credibility to the series? It allows me to understand the real estate game on and off camera. I think that is the most important part! Exciting projects on the horizon? There are so many. I have a lot of new Tribeca lofts coming up soon. Follow me on Instagram jessicamarkowski to stay in touch! 

ASTON MARTIN VALIANT Is Fernando Alonso’s Dream Car with a V12 Manual | BY SOMNATH CHARTTERJEE

W

e have seen some bespoke Aston Martin cars but this one ups the ante even further with an edgy design along with being manual of course. This is a V12 Aston Martin with a specification that has been ordered by none other than Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team driver Fernando Alonso. Hence, it is an Ultra-exclusive, track-focused, road-legal extreme Valiant special edition developed through bespoke service, Q by Aston Martin. However, if you like what you see, you too can get one of these bewinged monsters with 38 units being made globally and first deliveries to commence in Q4 2024. Yes, it looks like the earlier bespoke Aston Martin cars like the Valour which it is. The Valiant is essentially a personal commission from Fernando Alonso for a lightweight, more extreme, version of the Aston Martin Valour. Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team driver said: “Valour was a spectacular celebration of Aston Martin’s 110th anniversary, and stirred me to create a more extreme, race car inspired version that was track focused, while also delivering a thrilling drive on-road. Valiant is born from my passion for driving at the limit and I have enjoyed working closely with the Q by Aston Martin team on both the design and technical specification and believe we have created a masterpiece.” True to his word, the Valiant is a fully homologated race car for the road while drenched in exotic materials. Of course, the talking point here is the twin-turbocharged 5.2-liter V12 engine – which now develops 745PS and 753Nm of torque - and six-speed manual transmission. The Valiant also features standard-fit Carbon Ceramic brakes measuring 410mm x 38mm front and 360mm x 32mm rear. Reducing the weight has been the main agenda here with a 3D-printed rear sub-frame which saves 3kg with no reduction in stiffness, along with a 1

magnesium torque tube reduces mass at the center point of the car by 8.6kg. Peer closer and you will see Lightweight 21inch magnesium wheels – with 275/35 front and 325/30 rear tires, which further save weight by 14kg. You even get a motorsport-spec lithium-ion battery saving 11.5kg. There is a new suspension too involving the fitment of Multimatic Adaptive Spool Valve (ASV) dampers plus pre-set Driving Modes – Sport, Sport+ and Track. The interior is pared back, just like how a racing car drover would like with an exposed satin-finish carbon fiber and lightweight upholstery. The Valiant also gets a new steering wheel which is perfectly round with a slimmer-diameter rim and spokes devoid of switches for intuitive feel and zero distractions. A lovely touch showcasing the analogue nature of this car has been preserved via the cutaway in the transmission tunnel exposes the gear linkage running rearward to the six-speed transaxle. Built for track use, the Valiant has a built-in half-cage as-standard together with bespoke trimmed Recaro Podium seats. Of course, there are also bespoke door panels which feature a sculpted design with mesh insert panels to reduce weight, along with lightweight fabric door release pulls. Even the exterior is wrought with many intricate details including the distinctive Kamm tail and the upswept deck lid topped by a fixed wing. A fixed, one-piece clamshell rear features a hinged rear screen panel, allowing access to a load space for race helmets and race clothing. In hindsight, the Valiant is one of the last of the racers for the road along with an analogue V12 howling away while being the dream specification of an F1 Driver is the icing on top of a delectable cake. 

Calling all Prada eyewear fans, the critically acclaimed American actor and producer Jake Gyllenhaal has starred in the new 2024 Prada Linea Rossa eyewear campaign--stylistically shot by photographer Lukas Korschan at the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli base in Cagliari.

T

hrough the visuals, expect a peek into the ultra-intense world of high-performance sailing as the shots and moving images present Gyllenhaal and the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team while preparing for the race. The campaign captures a sequence of moments and interactions, from his arrival at the base to the sailing experience--and Gyllenhaal fully embraces the spirit of the challenge; the 37th America’s Cup competition will

be taking place in Barcelona from September to October 2024. On being a part of the campaign Gyllenhaal said, “I had the best time being part of this campaign in Cagliari and joining the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team.” Of course, it’s not the first time he’s worked with this Italian house and he continued, “I loved experiencing the base in real life, ahead of the America’s Cup competition. Collaborating with Prada is always unique, and this collection perfectly reflects my own style.” The latest Prada Linea Rossa eyewear capsule collection dons a thoroughly contemporary aesthetic, and of course, there is technological excellence. There are aerodynamic wraparound designs, complete with ultra-light frames, offering a strong color palette. Plus, don’t forget the silver finish as these draw influence from the new AC75 Luna

Rossa boat, a design masterpiece where innovation meets style. The highly functional lenses protect from sun rays and enhance peripheral vision, making them suitable for the extreme conditions of sporting challenges.

A special signature inside the temples highlights the geo-coordinates of the Barcelona Luna Rossa base, recalling the location where the most crucial phase of the adventure will begin. The lifestyle offering completes the collection, featuring essential and geometric frames, designed with minimal and monochromatic lines, that reflect an effortless look. The collection is now available for purchase at selected EssilorLuxottica retail and wholesale stores starting at $420. 

BUGATTI TOURBILLON Taking the Veyron Legacy Forward | BY SOMNATH CHARTTERJEE

T

he Veyron rewrote the supercar rulebook and established the hypercar genre that is thriving immensely today. Bugatti created a new boundary of what automotive engineering can do when pushed at the limit but over the years, the formula has been tweaked too. The Chiron pushed that ethos further but now the Tourbillion is a bold step towards changing the hypercar landscape much like what the Veyron did. This is not a reworked Chiron but an automotive Fabergé egg with a rocket engine strapped onto the back of it. Bugatti could have reworked the Chiron but instead went with a clean slate. The Tourbillon is all new and that includes its beguiling with massively powerful V16 engine. The previous Bugatti cars had the W16 and it was turbocharged with the personality of the car built around it. However, with the Tourbillon, there is an all-new 8.3-liter naturally aspirated V16 engine, made with the help of Cosworth while the electric assistance comes with no less than three electric motors including an e-Axle with two electric motors and one electric motor mounted at the rear axle. Combined, the Tourbillon produces 1,800 hp with 1,000 from the combustion engine only and 800 hp from the electric motors. Hence, this new Bugatti is an EV on one hand with more than many supercars from its electric motors alone but when combined with its epic engine, it simply becomes a rocketship for the road. Top-speed is 276 mph and for that it needs a special key but what is amazing is that its bespoke Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires are also capable of withstanding this much power. It also has a new chassis plus new lightweight front e-axle with dual independent motors, including the dual-inverter, which fits within the same package space that was available in Chiron. Bugatti has amazingly managed to keep the weight of the Tourbillon in check despite its complex hybrid powertrain.

2

That said, there is a lot more to the Tourbillion that just raw power as the name has been plucked from a watchmaking tradition which focus on craftsmanship. Bugatti has shunned the digital world for an analogue look and that is what its billionaire clients like. The centerpiece is the instrument cluster which has been designed and built with the expertise of Swiss watchmakers. It includes more than 600 parts and constructed from titanium as well as gemstones such as sapphire and ruby. Even the skeletonized cluster weighs just 700g. Unlike other cars, it is also fixed in place as the rim of the steering wheel rotates around it. Hence, Tourbillon drivers have an unobstructed view of their instrumentation independent of the steering angle because the spokes reach around the back of the instrument cluster. There is a screen which has been kept hidden to not disturb the gloriously analogue ambiance that the interior generates. Even the center switchgear follows the Tourbillion ethos of being exposed with the intricate workings being visible. Bugatti has also managed to keep the purity of the driving experience with fixed seats along with adjustable pedals. Even the audio system is not the same as standard cars as instead it has a more exotic lighter one with exciters on the door panels and throughout the car to use existing interior panels as speakers. The Tourbillion then is a more than just a run of the mill hyper car which only worships speed as it also infuses luxury along with craftsmanship which befits its name. Unlike the Chiron only 250 examples would be hand-made for its clients but most have already been spoken for despite its hefty $3.9 million price-tag. However, in terms of hyper cars the Bugatti Tourbillion is truly something unique.

uxury fashion label Rue Sophie believes in the power of minimalistic refinement -- think timeless dresses from silky slip to high neck-meets-ankleskimming numbers, then there are cropped pants that emit the Jackie O appeal, and modern outerwear with a nod to the classic, in the form of blazers, jackets, and cool trench coats; there’s no doubt,

you’ll love these items so much, they’ll form the basis of your wardrobe. And, each garment from Rue Sophie is crafted with care and attention, which is evident in every piece. The ethos here, which is led by Co-Founder and Creative Director Sabina Vilusic, is all about channeling simplicity in its purest form, offering chic clothing that transcends

trends. The result? Items that you’ll wear and cherish, always. We catch up with Vilusic who discusses everything from the relaunch and the concept of luxury, to her process, and the sophisticated and understated aesthetic of Rue Sophie.

| UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ Z INE |

MAY/ JUNE 2024

Tell us about Rue Sophie and how your brand came about? Rue Sophie re-launched in January 2024 as an all-new brand, which evolved from a former label called Sophie Rue—a wholesale-driven brand that was successful with retailers. After honing in on our DNA and design language we’ve leveraged strategic marketing investments to re-create our digital footprint which has yielded a luxury e-commerce experience. Attainable quiet luxury is what we do. Under Rue Sophie our product offerings are more elevated, nuanced in detail, and competitively priced; especially when considering the high-quality and enduring fabrications that we prioritize. This year, we’re excited to continue building awareness and cementing the brand in the industry, which we’re achieving through a 360 marketing strategy and community-led moments — such as our recent intimate press and VIP dinner hosted at La Mercerie in NYC to celebrate the launch. How would you sum up the brand aesthetic in a sentence? Rue Sophie emphasizes utility, sophistication and lasting relevance through elegantly understated garments and architectural nuances with a European-inspired sensibility. Our designs are inspired by sharp women with a strong sense of purpose, who are en route in quiet elegance, fiercely independent, and confident. What is luxury to you? Luxury to me is the feeling of freedom, being unconstrained, content, and at peace; a feeling that for me personally, comes from being authentic to oneself and spending quality time with family and friends. Who is your customer? We think about the woman who moves about the world and within her encounters she moves deliberately, has a strong sense of identity, and prioritizes quality. She is ruthless in her self-confidence and says so by leaving much unsaid. She is warm, not distant. She likes objects with meaning. She dresses for herself and is mid-maintenance; she cares deeply about her appearance, but on her own terms with a minimalist approach. She may have a distinct haircut, but wears little makeup, a lip and a defined brow does it. She loves her body but prefers to wear silhouettes with interesting profiles in place of revealing too much. The Rue Sophie woman loves to shop at well-curated destinations, at “underrated” or “best kept 2

| UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ Z INE | JULY/ AUG 2024

secret” type of retailers, such as cool boutiques she comes across along the way. However, she also has her go-tos, the more obvious online and in-store locations to find her favorite designers; whether new and upcoming or notable. What is on your current mood board? Narrower lines. Defined silhouettes. Sheer details. Fabric textures (organza, plisse, silk, wool, smooth leather). A mood board that is very much concentrated in Fall layers, such as wool coats (currently lusting over double-breasted coats, scarf coats, belted coats). Tell us about the process? It all begins with an idea. In my case, I find a lot of inspiration in modern women today and how I can use what has worked in the past to fit their needs today. Turning a sketch into a tangible fashion product is an intricate process involving numerous interconnected steps. It starts with sketching initial designs, then moves on to selecting the right fabric, followed by pattern-making and fitting sessions. Sourcing fabric can sometimes take a day or a few weeks, depending on the specific fabric. Once the correct fabric is acquired, pattern-making begins; creating templates based on precise measurements to ensure accurate fitting. Next comes the sample and fitting process, which can take anywhere from one session to a few fittings, depending on the garment. Careful attention to detail at each stage ensures the original design vision is successfully realized. Once we’re happy with the final sample, it will get approved and moved into production. What materials are your favorite to work with? Luxurious cupro knits, silk viscose, modal, and wools, amongst others. Materials that are adaptable and uninhibited. Currently, which is your favorite piece and how do you wear it/them? The Lille dress from our latest Summer 24 collection is super versatile, understated, and elegant in a beautiful mist blue color. Over this spring weather, I opt to wear it with our Norte cream sweater tied over my shoulders for those chilly mornings or evenings and styled with a pair of mesh flats and an oversized slouchy bag. What’s the best piece of advice that you’ve been given when it comes to handling the industry Always stay true to yourself. How would you like your brand to evolve over the coming years? Continuing to expand into other product categories; denim and accessories to come in the near future and also looking forward to opening our first flagship store.

150th Anniversary High Jewelry Collection

PIAGET’S | BY FELICITY CARTER

F

ounded in 1874, Georges-Edouard Piaget devoted himself to producing high-precision movements, focusing on quality, craftsmanship, and innovation, and these are pillars that still inform the Maison today. Fast forward, and Maison Piaget is celebrating its 150th anniversary with a virtuoso High Jewelry watch collection that highlights the ex2

travagance and elegance of a unique style. At the heart of it is a tribute to the skillful and elevated use of gold and color, and it’s here where the watchmaking and jewelry Maison reinvents itself through some hundred bold, captivating pieces. When it comes to aesthetic, expect fine fluidity of cuff bracelets and necklaces combined with the radiance of exceptional gemstones that

| UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ Z INE | JULY/ AUG 2024

come together to perfectly showcase the excellence of the Maison. The early Piaget style took shape in 1969 when this specialist of ultra-slim movements, established at La Côte-aux- Fées in 1874, launched the now iconic “21st Century Collection.” Shaped by “artisans who work like artists” who “always do better than necessary”, this array of jewelry watches don precious metal

that takes on a fabric-like texture, sitting with beautiful ornamental stones in vivacious colors, to present a new way to wear time. To mark the Maison’s 150th anniversary this year, Piaget pays homage to its creative golden years of the 1960s and 1970s, and as Stéphanie Sivrière, the Piaget jewelry and watch artistic director says, “In 2022, when we began to design the

150 year anniversary collection. It wasn’t about identically reproducing heritage pieces, but rather taking inspiration from them. Revisiting those values of boldness, originality and elegance that characterize this Maison’s soul at the dawn of modernity.” Supported by the exceptional craftsmanship demonstrated at the

Piaget High Jewelry workshops in Geneva, these 96 pieces celebrate that art of living, where sophistication meets vibrancy and extravagance. “Essence of Extraleganza” makes gold the subject and gemstones a true style element, offering a richness in design, as well as a diversity of gemstones, and this 150th-anni-

versary collection unveils its jewels in three representative Piaget lines. “Extraleganza” combines “extravagance” and “elegance,” and demonstrates the creative soul and avant-garde taste of the brand. “Piaget Society” celebrates the boldness of Piaget and its distinctive approach to jewelry, offering richly colored pieces, and here, the

avant-garde elegance of its handcoiled rose gold necklace directly references the Maison’s heritage. In the final chapter, we see, “When mastery ignites artistry,” which draws influence from the virtuosity in craftsmanship and the historical Piaget taste for couture, presenting precious textures to gold while offering a new sense of fluidity.

PEONY The Sustainable Swimwear Brand Combines Romance & Nostalgia | BY FELICITY CARTER PHOTOS PROVIDED BY THE BRAND

Meet the Founder and Director of peony Swimwear, Rebecca Morton who, after a journey of self-discovery switched from the world of law to the fashion industry. Established in 2012 the Australian-based, carbon-neutral brand has grown worldwide, appealing to all of those who love the beach, as well as chic swimwear and resort wear alike.

I

t’s no surprise that the ocean is a draw and a constant source of inspiration, growing up by the sea, Becky always loved the ocean and going hand-inhand with this is an understanding, love, and appreciation of swim pieces. When it comes to aesthetic, the peony collection is playful, with a hint of romanticism and nostalgia; step forth cute ‘60s-esq a-line dresses that don pale floral prints, smocked maxi dresses, halterneck swimsuits, and recycled-broderie anglaise bikinis. All these elements, along with her commitment to sustainability and authenticity, come together beautifully to radiate the happiness of summer and the appreciation of the ocean. We talk to Becky about her journey into the industry, the community that inspires her, and the genuine values of her brand. What was your first memory of style? It would have to be flicking through fashion magazine editorials in my bedroom. I loved the world of fashion from such a young age. I think it was the creative freedom and escapism that drew me in. I remember forcing my little sisters to be my models. I would dress them up in fully styled looks with hair and makeup and photograph them in obscure places around the house. How did you get into the fashion industry? Ever since I was a child, I was obsessed with fashion. I used to sketch dresses during school classes and cover my books in fashion editorials. After school I studied Law and Business, and went on to qualify and work as a lawyer in a

high profile criminal defense firm. I think at the time I believed that was the sensible thing to do. After about a year I just knew it wasn’t for me. I had a fire in my belly for something more creative and I just decided one day I didn’t want to die wondering what could have been. So I quit my job as a lawyer and started making samples and selling pieces at the local markets in Burleigh Heads, Australia. How would you sum up the aesthetic of peony? Feminine, romantic, nostalgic, enduring. Who is the peony customer? She’s of all ages and from many different walks of life. She’s a lover at heart, an optimist and someone who genuinely cares about people and the planet. She values beautiful design and is conscious about investing in quality pieces that are crafted from sustainable fabrics that will stand the test of time in her wardrobe. What are the cornerstones of your company? Passion. Authenticity. Responsibility. Integrity. Who inspires you? I’m forever inspired by our community. I still pinch myself that we have built this global network of women who genuinely love what we create and are on this journey with us. It’s an honor and a privilege, and it has never lost on me how lucky I am to be doing what I love every day. The real women that wear the brand are my biggest inspiration, seeing the pieces styled by them, in their own different unique ways, for a far-flung holiday or just for the school pick-up, it’s incredible to see and it is a huge inspiration. Which is your favorite-ever peony piece and why? Favorite piece ever!? That’s so hard! I think it would have to be the crochet set we released in 2020, for the sheer beauty of it and the back story. This set was hand-crocheted from recycled cotton. It took 17 hours to make the top alone and the skirt was tiered and fluted and moved so beautifully with the body. We were inspired by a vintage two-piece that belonged to our friend’s mum, and the end result was just so magical we fell completely in love. We placed an order on the pieces before receiving pricing from our supplier due to tight timelines, which was completely insane! We made a conservative estimate but it was so far off, the pieces were a negative margin. It was the result of total inexperience and not the best business practice by any means, but it just illustrates how deeply we fall in love with the things we create and how carried away we got in those early days…I wore the samples on a trip to a friend’s wedding in Tuscany that year.

ushing the boundaries of lingerie design, expect fine materials, heightened craftsmanship and of course, an exquisite fit. Leading the way is the Cleo style, and as the brand says, this line offers unparalleled passion

Crafted using soft recyclable tulle, it’s intricately adorned with embroidery that draws influence from the Japanese art of Kintsugi, and this is teamed with bold fluorescent coral silk and 24-carat-gold plated hardware. There is newness too, with the likes of an architectural longline bra and a soft cup, delicate bralette. For classic allure and opulence, cue Eliza. This collection dons the rich tone of plum that’s inspired by full-bodied pinot noir, and there are fine fabrications to match in the form of Italian invisible tulle, French eyelash lace and silk. This summer in Milan, the famed luxury Italian brand, Brunello Cucinelli presented its Spring/Summer ‘25 menswear collection, and as expected it strikes the perfect balance of elegance and contemporary tailoring. As the brand says, a taste for nonchalance is the key to interpreting contemporary elegance, and the pleasure of dressing with complete ease inspires freedom.

his line embraces delicate pastels of grapefruit, papaya and ginger that act as neutrals, and this is enlivened with touches of color. The summer palette evolves through a wide range of neutral beiges, greys and blues, including warm English white, plus elegant textures of dark brown and intense bark tones for a sense of grounding. And as for the season’s most sought-after suits, they don soft summer hues, cue cherry blossom, cream and sky blue. When it comes to fabrication, natural fibers take center stage, with silk in particular playing a leading role; pure or in precious blends, always with a matte effect, even in unusual elements such as outerwear or denim fabrics to add a touch of the unexpected. Summer outerwear takes on a more technical character, with wide volumes that nod to the 1980s, or the use of fine

fabrics from the world of tailoring, and knitwear offers a variety of stitches and a new way of layering. Colors are scattered throughout the range, from very light knit T-shirts and polo shirts to cardigans in soft malfilé cotton that are ideal for the sunny spring months. There’s also a deluxe new cashmere and linen yarn that introduces sophisticated colors in lighter knits, while striped patterns create delicate accords with panama, beige and grey tones. The capsule, which is dedicated to the world of tennis is renewed in a summer version and is joined by a new capsule inspired by golf -- and these two sporting worlds -- are revisited through refined elements and the signature casual-chic aesthetic of the brand. Craftsmanship and curated fabrications offer lightness and comfort to the accessories, with the footwear line focusing on loafers, enhanced with unique details such as woven leather uppers or espadrille-style rope inserts. Sitting alongside this are the new trainer styles in very light, casual versions or ‘70s styles to hint at the retro vibe.

OLIVER SPENCER Rules of Summer Dressing | BY FELICITY CARTER PHOTOS PROVIDED BY THE BRAND

Oliver Spencer founded his eponymous London-based label in 2002 and has built a reputation for crafting contemporary menswear that dons a classic quality construction ever since. Designed in London, the collections offer something new to the world of menswear, think all the quality and craft of premium tailoring, but with a relaxed modern style. The philosophy here is quality needn’t mean formality, and casual needn’t mean careless, and this ethos has appealed to many. As such, the brand is not only worn by famous faces, but it’s available in leading stockists worldwide, and you’ll also find Oliver Spencer brick-and-mortar stores for the full brand experience, including its new outpost on London’s Chiltern Street in Marylebone. To celebrate summer, the brand has offered its rules for menswear dressing, so you’ll look dapper during the sunnier climes. Rule 1: Mix up your textures Whenever I design a collection, I always come from a starting point of fabric, and the same goes for when you’re thinking about a look. Incorporating interesting fabrics with unique textural qualities will instantly raise the bar on your style. In the summer, that means fabrics like terry cloth, linen, or open-weave knits, really tactile cloths that will give your outfit depth and character. Rule 2: Love linen Linen is my favorite summer fabric by a country mile. Not only is it extremely ecological, it’s just got all the characteristics you would want from a warm-weather fabric: lightweight, breathable, and quick-drying. And from a style point of view, it has a unique texture, especially the more slubby linen cloths. Whether it’s a pair of breezy linen trousers or a relaxed linen suit, you’ll get so much summer mileage from this wonderful fabric.

7

| UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ INE |

JULY/ AUG 2024

Rule 3: Use accents of color When the sun comes out, often our immediate response is to dive into our respective wardrobes and pull out all the brightest, boldest colors and patterns we can find. Hold your horses! Yes, bold colors are summer-appropriate, but use them in accents, rather than going all-in! They will be far more effective in smaller doses when set off against more muted neutral tones elsewhere in your outfit.

| UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ INE |

Rule 4: Opt for unstructured tailoring I make unstructured tailoring year-round because I love the feel and drape of a jacket without any canvassing or lining, but especially in the summer when the mercury rises. An unstructured jacket still has an element of smartness thanks to the silhouette, but the fact that it is unstructured removes any of the formality from it, leaving you with a jacket that looks and feels more like an extension of your casual wear, which is exactly what you want in the summer.

JULY/ AUG 2024

Rule 5: Embrace the camp collar One of my favorite summer silhouettes, the camp collar shirt is a short-sleeve style defined by a collar that folds down with a small lapel. It’s one of those wonderfully versatile summer shirts that you can wear with shorts and fisherman’s sandals by the pool, while also pairing it with a beautiful linen suit for a smart al fresco dinner in the evening. Again, look for styles with great textural qualities and you can’t go wrong.

TOHUM’S

SAMSARA COLLECTION | BY FELICITY CARTER

T

he inspiration behind the collection TOHUM at its essence is inspired by native cultures who instinctively know how to connect and communicate with nature. As in many of these cultures, using organic, natural pieces is at the core of body adornment. TOHUM is interpreting this bold expression and connectivity to Mother Earth in its own contemporary way.

SHELLS

Founded by Verda Alaton, TOHUM is the jewelry brand to have on your radar. Known for beautifully considered jewelry that incorporates travel and the natural world, each item acts as a powerful form of self-expression in many cultures around the world. With a free-spirited perspective, and a dose of luxe bohemia, these are the perfect jewelry pieces to wear and love this summer, and throughout the year. We talk to Verda Alaton and discover more about her latest collection that draws inspiration from the beauty of the beach.

It’s second nature to me to use shells in my designs. They are one of the most peaceful and feminine natural elements for me. Throughout the years, they always come back to be part of various collections. I hand collect them during my travels, by the ocean around the world. Buckets of shells. This is my meditation, and working with them, and bringing them together in a piece is like getting friends or families together in harmony. WHY THE NAME “SAMSARA”

Samsara is a spiritual term to express cycles, reincarnation and wandering. A cycle of life and existence. I wish to give a new life to my collected shells, coming together with one unique human being. A new life begins in a different form, as contemporary adornment. COLOR PALETTES

I love to put forth the beauty of the shells first. White, or colorful, textured or smooth. Thin or super thick. All is built around the beauty of the piece. As if the natural states guides us to bring it to a pop, joyful spirit with red, orange, green or a more earthy, grounding expression with naturals and khaki. MIXT OF MATERIALS

Using nature, the shells as the focal point, we love to mix it with materials. Leather, vintage African | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ INE | JULY/ AUG 2024

recycled glass beads, wood beads, sterling silver or gold-plated crafted forms, and crystals. We all the fact that each element will add to the unique expression of the piece. Cool, warm, striking, calming, fun or exquisite. SEASONS

My very first shell trend-triggering collection “Concha” came to life in the winter of 2017. I love putting forward unexpected materials in contrasting times. I love shells in summer as in winter. Nature doesn’t have restrictions; nature’s beauty is timeless. THE WEARER

For everybody who wants to feel close to Mother Earth. Anybody who wants to express her unique beauty and style freely, everybody who finds peace and freedom in wearing one-of-a-kind pieces. HOW TO STYLE IT, WHERE TO WEAR IT?

With everyday casuals or at an elegant evening cocktail. The spirit of the wearer should decide freely.

MICHAEL MITCHELL Thinking Outside The Box | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS

Offering an immersive 360-degree experience, Michael Mitchell’s journey into interior design began as a youngster. Since its inception in 2010, Michael Mitchell has created the most noteworthy interiors through his hallmark twisted traditional style.

Michael, tell us about yourself. Certainly. My journey into interior design began with the influence of two important women in my life. My favorite grandmother operated a drapery workroom, where I spent much of my youth observing her craft. Additionally, my mother possessed a keen eye for style, which further fueled my passion for design. These early experiences laid the foundation for my career in interior design. Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path? Absolutely. My grandmother’s drapery workroom and my mother’s impeccable style were significant influences on my career choice. Observing their creativity and attention to detail sparked my interest in interior design from a young age. You are renowned for sourcing the most intriguing pieces for clients since 2010 in your Charleston-based showroom. How do you blend fresh with the unexpected? When it comes to blending fresh elements with the unexpected, I focus on innovation in how we use items rather than solely relying on unique pieces. By thinking outside the box and incorporating items in unexpected ways, we infuse each design with freshness and intrigue.

To achieve timeless design with a modern twist, I always reference the past. Modern pieces should have a historical reference to ensure they stand the test of time. By connecting contemporary elements with historical context, we create designs that feel both fresh and enduring. You offer a 360-degree experience. Please explain. Our firm provides comprehensive interior design services, covering everything from lighting and paint to upholstery. We are involved in every aspect of the design process, ensuring a cohesive and complete result that encompasses every detail of the home. Is MoodBoardMonday a regular occurrence? Absolutely. MoodBoardMonday is becoming a regular event for us. It’s a great way for people to see the diverse range of projects we’re working on and the unique design concepts we’re exploring. Please tell us about layering in design. Layering in design is essential for creating depth and visual interest in a space. I focus on achieving a strong balance of scale and symmetry, adding layers like books and plants to enhance texture and visual appeal. The layering process often happens at the final stages of design, adding a nuanced richness to the overall aesthetic.

Tell us about your hallmark ‘twisted traditional’ style. Twisted traditional style is all about modernizing historic homes for contemporary living while maintaining their historical charm. We achieve this by incorporating modern elements like fresh drapery and new sofas alongside antique furniture pieces. It’s about infusing modernity into traditional spaces while honoring their heritage.

Do you source antiques for your showroom and design studio as well as for your clients, and what is the process? Yes, I source antiques for both my showroom and clients. I travel to Europe once or twice a year for buying trips and attend estate sales and antique fairs across the country. I select pieces that speak to me personally, confident that they will eventually find their way into a project.

Please talk us through how you manage to execute timeless design with a modern twist.

How do you go about curating clients’ art collections? When curating clients’ art collections, I start by incorporating their

existing pieces into the design. From there, I encourage clients to keep an eye out for interesting pieces they encounter. Additionally, I actively search for art on behalf of my clients, believing that art should find its way to them as easily as they find it. I assume a client relationship is imperative. How do you maintain a strong one? Building strong client relationships is essential in my line of work. I make an effort to get to know my clients personally, understanding their family dynamics, lifestyle, and preferences. I invite them to personal events and maintain open communication throughout the design process, ensuring their vision is realized.

| UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ INE | JULY/ AUG 2024

How do you manage to ‘close the office door and not bring work home’? Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is important to me. I set boundaries by avoiding work-related communication after 7 p.m., allowing myself to disconnect from work and focus on personal time. Exciting projects on the horizon? I’m thrilled to be starting a new project in Montana for a client I’ve worked with before. This will be the third home I’ve designed for them, and I’m excited to bring their vision to life once again. Working with a regular client adds an extra layer of excitement and familiarity to the design process.

BRITTANY FARINAS Creating Unique and Exceptional Spaces | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS S BY BE ME LEGENDARY

Heading up her firm House of One, Brittany Farinas works hand-in-hand with her team and clients to create unique and exceptional spaces.

Brittany, tell us a bit about yourself. I launched my business during my time in design school at the age of 21. Simultaneously, I juggled multiple jobs, including a daytime waitressing job on the weekends, cocktail waitressing at a restaurant/ nightclub on weekend nights, working at a commercial real estate office on weekdays, and undertaking a home renovation project that propelled my business forward. Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path? Absolutely. My mother worked at a retail furniture store growing up, so I spent a significant amount of my early childhood there. In hindsight, I started developing my eye from being surrounded by all different styles of furniture and finish selections. You are incredibly young, yet you are a CEO & Creative Director of House of One. Do you encounter people who don’t take you seriously because of your youthful looks? I don’t often come across individuals who underestimate me. I believe it’s because of the strong work ethic I have cultivated over the years with my unwavering dedication to my clients and the mastery

of my craft. Above all else, I believe people acknowledge and value these qualities in me. You are set to revolutionize the South Florida interior design world. Please tell us more. We are constantly evolving our design process and elevating the services that we provide to our clients. What I am most excited about at the moment is the way we are embracing technological advancements and leveraging tools such as virtual reality to provide our clients with an immersive experience that goes beyond traditional boundaries. Our goal is to continuously adapt and stay at the cutting edge of the industry’s ever-evolving landscape. How do you manage to create atmospheres that are both visually stimulating and experiential while using carefully planned designs to fulfill functionality? There are a few key concepts that need to be established during the programming phase of the project - understanding the purpose, space planning, and sensory elements within a project. To break it down, we need to establish the intention and the vibe that we are going to create. We work

| UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ INE | JULY/ AUG 2024

with clients that will become the end users of the property, and clients who are looking to create a standout experience for the next potential buyer. Each program leans into different approaches, so it’s important to establish that and then the rest shines through the space planning and the design process. Is there a disparity between designing for developers versus clients? This goes back to the last question. There is definitely a difference between working with a developer versus a client. This becomes apparent through their objectives, decision making authority, long term vs short term perspective, and budget constraints to name a few. Being a designer that does actively work with both, it’s important to be adaptive and strategic in all situations. What is Tropical Modernism & Maximalism? Tropical Modernism embodies a vision that seamlessly blends nature-inspired elements with modern aesthetics. Picture a property abundant with lush trees and exotic plant species, creating an experiential yet serene atmosphere. This design approach embraces clean lines and a min-

imalist aesthetic, ensuring functionality at the forefront. Maximalism in design is a bold and expressive approach that celebrates abundance, vibrancy, and eclectic aesthetics. It embraces a ‘more is more’ philosophy, where layers of colors, patterns, textures, and decorative elements come together to create visually rich and dynamic spaces. Talk us through custom millwork? Custom millwork and furniture are undeniably key elements in all our projects. It grants us the freedom to shape and customize spaces, opening up endless possibilities for material choices and optimizing functionality to meet our clients’ needs. By integrating custom millwork and furniture into our projects, we are able to deliver a tailored luxury experience to our clients. Has the design world changed over the last few years eg. 3D renderings and have they made an impact? We harness the power of 3D and virtual reality software to enhance our project workflow. In the conceptual phase, meticulous space planning takes center stage, and the ability to immerse ourselves in these virtual environments prior to development is invaluable. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that 3D visualization and renderings serve as tools for communicating design intent and scale. It is important to remember that the ultimate outcome will be realized through the selection of final materials and finishes, which play an integral role in bringing the project to life. You push boundaries, challenge norms & think outside the box to create unique and exceptional spaces for your clients. How imperative is the relationship between you and your client(s)? The client-designer relationship is crucial, especially considering our projects typically span 1-4 years. We’ve built long-term relationships with clients, working on multiple properties, and some have become like extended family. We shape their living experience, creating personalized homes for their families. It’s a deeply personal journey, so establishing mutual understanding, respect for time, and trust is paramount. Miami is a destination for art & design. I am proud to be a Miami Native, a city that exudes a vibrant culture, captivating art, and

exceptional design. The continuous development in this dynamic city is truly remarkable. I am grateful for the opportunity to work in renowned neighborhoods across Miami and Miami Beach, where the pulse of creativity and innovation is alive and thriving. I love your quote: We don’t observe the moment, we curate it into a unique space that speaks for itself. I believe that design has the power to really transcend the ordinary and evoke emotions that can ultimately change the way you live. The inspiration for our projects come from a wide variety of things - the client, architecture of the home, and what I have been loving in the moment. As long as the project fully encompasses the House of One principles of design (a smart space plan, a palette/color story that evokes the vibe and feeling that the client is looking for, beautiful objects and materials, and bespoke moments) – then we know the project is going to be a success. Do you have a favorite texture to work with? And color? Lately, I have been loving anything and everything sea-like. My recent travels have inspired me to incorporate seashell-like materials, textured glass, and other ocean-inspired objects into H1’s design ecosystem. Beyond the individual materials, it’s really about the overall feeling reflecting a sense of peace and tranquility that resonates with me. This is probably a difficult one – do you have a favorite project you’ve worked on and why? That’s a hard one. Among all our past projects, the Sunset Islands project holds a special place as my favorite to date. It defies expectations of a typical tropical Balinese exterior that then invites you into an elegant and refined interior. This jewel box property is a testament to the harmonious blend of vibrant colors, beautiful materials, and objects, surpassing boundaries and creating a truly remarkable experience. Do you get to travel for business and downtime? Which destination(s) has / have left a lasting impression and why? My team and I travel regularly for work, keeping inspiration alive in our design studio. Recently during my downtime, Cabo has

2 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ INE | JULY/ AUG 2024

captured my heart. The city offers abundant design inspiration, and its lifestyle seamlessly evokes livable luxury. Exciting projects on the horizon? We have a ton of new projects that have unique qualities about them both within and out of Miami that I am excited about. They all have their own personality and soul, and we can’t wait to share them. | https://houseof1.com/

AT HOME WITH

TIMOTHY CORRIGAN | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS ALL IMAGES BY AMY BARNARD

Going back to his childhood roots, Timothy Corrigan purchased a home in Hancock Park, California, the same neighborhood where he used to live as a youngster. He takes Upscale Living magazine on a tour of his homey abode, which he shares with his life partner, Kathleen Scheinfeld.

Timothy, did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path? I was born in Minnesota, the heartland of America, and raised in Los Angeles. As a boy, I was fascinated by architecture. I designed houses out of balsa wood and even created the landscaping around them. I was lucky to have great exposure to the arts as a child. My parents collected contemporary art, and my moth-er took us to museums and the theatre. I think that early exposure helped establish my connection with art and culture. Please tell us more about your home. This home is a two-story 1940s Georgian Colonial, in Hancock Park, CA. I’ve lived in this neighborhood since I was a child. I love this style of architecture because

| UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ INE | JULY/ AUG 2024

it’s easy to understand and to live in. Things are where you expect them to be - the center hallway, the living room to the left, the dining room to the right - and you feel comfortable because you’re not trying to figure it out. You are an interior designer. Did you opt to do your home’s own interior design? Yes! Why in the world would I give that fun job to someone else? How would you best describe your design style? I try to create environments where people feel welcome and at home. Comfort is the key ingredient. Comfort is more than just being soft and cozy, it is also a mental thing - do you feel comfortable enough to put your feet up on something? Can you place a glass

| UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ INE |

JULY/ AUG 2024

on a table without worrying about leaving a mark? Can you let the kids play in the room without being afraid they will ruin something? That is essential. There is a strong foundation of classical design in my work. I believe that a successful project appears timeless and never looks as if it has been ‘decorated’. I mix furniture, art, and design from different periods to achieve this objective. I avoid designing rooms that have easily identifiable furnishings and accessories. A design editor who has been in my homes in California and France commented that my home in Los Angeles feels like it could be in France and my places in both Paris and the French countryside seem like they could be in Southern California. I love that they all seem to be a mix of these two different ways of living. Where/what/who inspires your design style? I’ve spent much of my life in Europe and appreciate what it offers in terms of style and history. And while I love a lot of the European design aesthetic, there is something special about the ease of life in America - so, if you can have a blend of the two, you have the best of both worlds. How do you keep things fresh and new in terms of decorating? Too often people operate on autopilot and stop looking at the little details in things they pass every day, and it is the details that make a huge difference to the way something looks and feels and functions. I’m always looking. I might see a design detail in a book, or an auction catalog and I can’t help but think about how it might look reinterpreted in a different format or material. It’s important to put yourself in environments to soak up inspiration. Go to museums, go and listen to the guides, soak up their insights, and immerse yourself in learning. I am a voracious learner - it’s the thing that drives me more than anything else. Is there a specific color you are drawn to in interior design? I’m drawn to warm, saturated colors. I particularly like yellow because the eye associates it with the sun, and it creates a feeling of positivity and happiness. Do you believe in repurposing? I’m a big proponent of repurposing furniture in my homes and client projects. I often take an

antique commode and repurpose it as a vanity. Armoires are a great place to hide a television. I’ve cut down small dining tables and turned them into a coffee table or bench. In this house, 75 percent of the furnishings are new, and 25 percent rehabbed. I got all new oriental rugs and reupholstered things to feel the same way but to look different. Tiger silk velvet chairs in the living room now bring an exotic touch, while a ruby-red velvet sofa in the family room evokes the splendor of Old Hollywood. I splurged on a new dining room table and chandelier but kept my existing chairs. I also retained the vintage O’Keefe & Merritt stove for the kitchen. It’s wildly unfunctional, but I love the look. Do you have any special heirloom pieces? A Mahogany cabinet, c. 1795 depicting 32 great Greek gods and philosophers in porcelain. It was a gift to Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia by William 5th, Prince of Orange, King of Holland. The cabinet maker placed Catherine at the very top to signify she is more important than the gods and philosophers depicted below. Which part of your home is your favorite? I created a workspace at one end of the living room so I can work comfortably in the evenings or on weekends. It has a set of French doors that open to the yard. During the pandemic I spent more hours than I like to remember doing Zoom calls at that desk. In which part of your home do you spend the most time? I always try to use every part of the house … every night before dinner, I read the newspaper in the living room, we have dinner in the dining room, watch movies in the family room and often spend an hour or two in bed reading before sleeping. If I find that I am not using a particular room, I try to figure out what will get it to be used more often. You share your home with your partner Kathleen Scheinfeld. How involved was she in the interior design and as an expert in your field, were/are you open to design suggestions from her? As anyone with a life partner knows, creating a home is always a question of compromise. In my career as a designer, at times I feel that I am as much a marriage counselor as I am a design-

| UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ INE | JULY/ AUG 2024

er! Fortunately, after being together for more than 25 years, the decisions get easier because we already have a good idea of each other’s likes and dislikes. Do you have any designers that inspire you? Jean-Charles Moreux who lived in Paris from 1889 to 1956 did it all. He was an architect, designed interiors, created furniture, and did landscape design. In short, he was a true Renaissance man. He believed, as I do, in creating a fully integrated environment. Moreux’s furniture took classical forms as their basis and shifted it to make it feel more contemporary, provocative, fresh, and alive. He mixed wood finishes and materials in unexpected ways. He played with perspective and color. When you see his rooms, you are reminded of the past, yet they seem very suited for the day.  https://www.timothy-corrigan.com/

| BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS

Celebrating a decade of architectural excellence, Upscale Living magazine spoke exclusively with Dan D’Agostino from Plan Architecture about what it takes to run a successful full-service architectural firm, where they shape stunning exteriors and elegant interiors. Dan, please tell us a bit about yourself. In my formative years, I enjoyed drawing, and it caught the discerning eye of my father. Recognizing the potential within me, he directed my aspirations towards the realm of architecture. Through that, I put by my passion for artistic expression in the world of design. This laid the foundation for my lifelong pursuit of architectural excellence. A fun fact is that I attended NJIT School of Architecture essentially on a whim after I won a scholarship for an architectural competition. I never even filled out an application. That is a longer story for another time!

My signature style is to seamlessly merge modern moments into traditional architecture to create a harmonious blend. Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path? Although cliche, it is my truth, my father was a huge influence who shaped my career path - beyond what I noted above in the first question. He was constantly building things with my brother and me. Even at a young age, I would create the sketches that would dictate our improvements in and around our house. I have been chasing that process ever since. When and why did you start your firm, Plan Architecture? After working at several firms, I started Plan Architecture in 2014. I longed for a more personal interaction with clients. It was not necessarily the best timing as my wife was pregnant with our first child! I was making a big change in our lives, but I also knew if I did not do it at that point, it probably would not happen. I also knew my mission very early on in the process and what was important to me to develop in the firm. I was looking to create lifestyle-enhancing designs inspired by my clients, fueled by passion. I knew this had to be delivered by me and a devoted team. We just celebrated our 10 year anniversary. What began in my basement has turned into a 25 person firm. What does it entail to run a full-service architectural firm? Running a full architectural firm requires patience and perseverance due to the complex nature of projects, timelines, client relationships, and the need for continuous innovation and adaptation in the industry. It involves managing a team, meeting client expectations, navigating regulations, and staying on top of trends - all which demand resilience and dedication. How do you place clients at the forefront of the design process? Prioritizing clients and their needs is paramount in the design process. I want to know everything about my clients. From details such as how they feel about waking up with the sun rising from their window - to how they get to their kitchen in the morning for coffee. It ensures that their vision, preferences, and requirements are seamlessly integrated into crafting environments that are a reflection of their needs and their home. This is highly personal. A client-focused methodology is key for us. When working with clients, how do you persuade them to see your vision without it coming across like it’s your idea? 2 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ INE | JULY/ AUG 2024

I listen. It is very important to understand what it is a client wants and why. This will help me deliver what it is they truly want. Any good designer merges their client’s vision with good design principles. Our 3-D renderings really reassure clients that we are gearing them down the right path, visualizing their design journey with our clarity and confidence. What and who inspires you? I draw from many different things, including other great architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Olson Kundig Architects. I appreciate the notion of meeting the land with architecture and creating inspiring spaces. One of my favorite buildings is the Salk Institute for Biological Studies located in La Jolla, California, designed by architect Louis Kahn in collaboration with Jonas Salk. Additionally, Instagram serves as a wellspring of inspiration from thoughtful architects in the field. I’m inspired by their creative details and love to forge valuable connections, which enriches my design perspective. Do you have a signature style? My signature style is to seamlessly merge modern moments into traditional architecture to create a harmonious blend. The favorite part of your job? My favorite part of my job is presenting our renderings and hearing how closely the finished product is to our conceptual design. I appreciate going to a project after it is done and knowing that it started with trace paper. 3

Seeing it built and lived in is truly enriching, and I value the entire process from start to finish. Important lessons along the way? I found that aligning myself with the proper team, including my staff, contractors, and clients are the most critical part of a successful project. It is vital to surround yourself with people who have the same vision and values. What do you do for fun? I love to enjoy time with my family. I value our time, especially down the shore and I love to read and play guitar. We actually have a room in the house that is full of guitars! Music is a passion of mine and always has been. My children are also becoming music enthusiasts.

Exciting projects on the horizon? We are excited about our thoughtful highend design residences coming up that are truly mind-blowing. We can’t wait to share them! There are two projects I want to mention in particular, and we’re excited to share every step of the process on Instagram https://www.instagram. com/planarchitecture/ The first involves a new home, where we are documenting details from zoning to site acquisition, all the way through furniture. The second project is a new building for Plan Architecture. We’re currently navigating through the zoning process, and we’re eager to document this journey as well. Connect with us on Instagram to see how these projects develop.  | https://plnarc.com/

PAUL BISHOP

Fueled by Passion and Creativity | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS

Celebrating twenty years of Bishop Design, we spoke to the man behind the brand and discover what it entails to be a successful interior designer.

IMAGE COURT ESY OF BISH OP D ESIGN

Paul, tell us a bit about yourself. Growing up in a small English town, I was motivated to seize every opportunity that came my way. Art was a passion of mine in my youth, though I also excelled as a runner during my school years. However, following an injury, I immersed myself in art with vigor. My love of interior design began at Arts School, where I became involved in a range of artistic disciplines. Pulling from my talent for drawing, I found myself drawn to textiles, furniture, and product design. While interior design wasn’t initially part of my plan, its emergence as a study option during university really intrigued me. While studying product design at Kingston University London, it was clear that interiors was where I wanted to be - a perfect combination of all of these disciplines. What fascinated me about interior design was its ability to bring different artistic mediums into one cohesive expression. It allowed me to bring together elements from film, fashion, art, and more to create immersive and exciting spaces. I saw it as an opportunity to not only design spaces but also to tell stories and evoke emotions. So, I embraced interior design as my chosen path, applying my artistic capabilities

to craft spaces that engage, excite, and educate. It’s been a journey fueled by passion and creativity, where every project offers new opportunities to push the boundaries of design. Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path? As a university student, I was always eager to learn more and push beyond the given boundaries. During my master’s program at Manchester, we had the unique opportunity to design our own vocational courses, tailoring them to our interests. The flexible course structure allowed me to question and explore further, never being fully satisfied with the standard syllabus. At that time, I was also experimenting with film and became captivated by how the medium could create stunning and imaginative interior spaces. You started Bishop Design two decades ago. What sparked the decision to launch your eponymous firm? In 2004, after working in Dubai for eight years, I received a once-in-a-lifetime offer from one of the world’s leading design agencies. They wanted me to head up their Singapore office as Design Director, an incredible opportunity. However, I

| UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ INE | JULY/ AUG 2024

became hesitant. At the time, Dubai was undergoing a remarkable transformation, with modern infrastructure emerging. I realized I could be part of this unfolding evolution, so I turned down the offer, and Bishop Design was born. We started from a shared warehouse in Al Quoz, with no air conditioning and just three employees, including myself. Yet, I was fortunate to have built strong relationships and friendships with potential clients from my previous work, who began to approach me. The journey has had numerous challenges, but I am grateful for turning down the chance to leave Dubai. What I have been able to build and achieve, with the support of my clients, colleagues, and employees, far exceeds anything I could have dreamed of. Wow, 20 years, what an incredible milestone! Congratulations! There must have been some interesting lessons along the way. Please share a few if you don’t mind. Over the past 20 years, building Bishop Design has been a whirlwind, rewarding adventure. One of the guiding principles I’ve embraced is the quote, ‘Never walk through the world with your eyes closed’. This resonates with me as a reminder to

always remain curious, observant, and open to learning. As professionals in the hospitality industry, we are constantly receiving and processing information through our senses - visually, audibly, through texture and color, culture and comfort. Recognizing that we are perpetual students, absorbing and adapting to this ever-evolving landscape, is key. No one has all the answers, and there is always room for growth and innovation. Maintaining this sense of curiosity and enthusiasm for improvement is what has allowed Bishop Design to thrive over the past two decades. The hospitality world is in a state of constant change, and the ability to embrace that change is critical for success. What does a day in the life of a multiaward-winning interior design firm entail? First things first – coffee. A strong cup in the morning kickstarts my day. While my schedule isn’t strictly regimented, it typically involves a mix of virtual calls, occasional in-person meetings, team catch-ups, and focused design sessions before diving into another meeting. It can all depend on my location, or where in the world the project is. Bishop Design is based in Miami and Dubai. Where do you spend the majority of your time? Honestly? On a plane! Well, it feels that way sometimes. But joking aside, when I’m not traveling internationally for client meetings or site visits, I try to divide my time equally between both cities. I remain heavily involved in our projects and collaborate closely with the team on every front. Managing these demands keeps me on my toes, but it’s all part of the job when you’re in high demand. How hands-on are you with each project? I take a deeply hands-on approach with every project I undertake. From conceptualization to execution, I am actively engaged in every phase. I collaborate closely with my team, ensuring that our design vision aligns seamlessly with client expectations. Whether it’s brainstorming creative concepts, conducting site visits, or refining details, I am personally invested in the success of each project. This hands-on involvement not only ensures quality and consistency but also allows me to maintain a direct connection with every aspect of our work.

What sets your firm apart from others? Our design philosophy is rooted in creating cutting-edge interiors that not only exceed client expectations, but also elevate consumer experiences globally. At the core of our approach is a deep understanding of human philosophy and behavior. Each project begins with a narrative, where we create a compelling story through our design. Our aim is to transform the way people dine, socialize, and interact with their surroundings. With offices in both Miami and Dubai, we leverage the time difference to ensure around-the-clock availability and readiness. How do you go about bringing your international experience from Dubai to Miami, and why avoiding the status quo is key? Over the years, we have been fortunate to design venues across the globe and collaborate with some renowned names, thanks to the reputation we’ve established in Dubai and the Middle East. Expanding to Miami has allowed us to integrate our extensive international experience from Dubai into our design approach, enriching Miami’s landscape with innovative influences. For disruption, you need to be able to push boundaries and avoid the status quo. As creatives, we strive to conventional design thinking, explore new and exciting avenues that challenge our abilities and question preconceived notions. Your design philosophy is rooted in creating cutting edge interiors. Please explain. I believe in crafting spaces that not only meet functional needs but also inspire and delight. This approach involves thinking outside of the box, going against the grain, and not being afraid to innovate where others might hesitate. Drawing inspiration from diverse cultural influences and architectural traditions, we embrace forward-thinking concepts and integrate them with timeless design principles. Our goal is to deliver spaces that are not only aesthetically striking but also exceed client expectations, enrich user experiences, and leave a lasting impression. Please tell us about Rogue. Our sister company Rogue is a branding and design studio located in Dubai that focuses on integrating traditional arts and crafts with modern technological practices to bring thoughtful, functional and engaging design

| UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ INE | JULY/ AUG 2024

to the overall user experience. We collaborate with Rogue on many projects, most recently for Play Playground in Las Vegas. Exciting projects on the horizon? Our team is currently working on an exciting project, located in Saudi Arabia. I cannot speak too much on this at the moment, but let’s just say it is an unimaginable ‘adventure entertainment hub’ that blends hospitality, food & beverage, entertainment, and retail into a unique, immersive experience in an unconventional location- a truly revolutionary concept. We recently completed PLAY Playground in Las Vegas, an adult entertainment venue that represents a new and pioneering approach. By deliberately stripping away digital distractions, PLAY Playground aims to reconnect people on a fundamental human level and foster genuine, screen-free fun and socialization - almost like a psychological experiment in reclaiming interpersonal connection. Another recent project is the launch of Sereia, a Portuguese restaurant in Miami’s Coconut Grove helmed by two-Michelin starred chef Henrique Sá Pessoa. We are also designing amenity spaces for multi-family developments in Miami including 2000N and Excel Residences. Hospitality projects remain a core focus for us. Our goal is to enhance how people interact with their environments. Underpinning our approach is a deep understanding of human psychology and behavior. Each project begins with a carefully crafted narrative that shapes the design. As interior designers, we are the ‘master manipulators’ - we know precisely how guests will move through and interact with a space, because we’ve meticulously planned every element to orchestrate the desired experience.  | https://wearebishopdesign.com/

BIAGIO FORINO Creating Versatility in Design | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS

Creating harmonious symmetry between various design elements is what Interior Designer Biagio Forino does best. Upscale Living magazine spoke with him about his formative years and designing the brand-new suites at Hilton Molino Stucky Venice. Biagio, tell us a bit about yourself. I was born in Salerno on the Italian southwest coast, and I lived there for twenty-seven years. I graduated in Salerno and then did a specialization course in Interior Design in Milan. Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path? Absolutely yes. From my early years I was inspired by my father who was an engineer and I used to accompany him to many construction sites until I started using the drawing boards of his studio. What inspired you to open your studio, Biagio Forino Interiors in 1987? My real passion has always been interior design. I have constantly read furniture magazines, visited any kind of museums, in particular decorative arts museums. I was lucky enough to grow up in an environment where there was a lot of attention to culture and aesthetics. I have always had a focus on researching everything that is beautiful, refined, and luxurious. You are known as a versatile designer – you design hotels as well as private homes. How different are the projects in terms of design and client involvement?

Hotel design differs from home design in many aspects. Talking about hotel design, I enjoy traveling and I often stay in luxury and charming hotels, so I am very aware of what a customer expects from a hotel. The first impression is the most important thing, together with the harmony between the various elements of the decoration which must be balanced and give a feeling of well-being to the guests. Immediately afterwards, however, it is important for the guest to find comfort and practicality as soon as they enter the room. Easy-to-manage light controls, good lighting both in the sleeping area including the reading lights next to the headboard and in the living area and bathroom. Easy-to-reach sockets for PCs and mobile phones. Spacious and well-equipped wardrobes, support for both customers’ suitcases, comfortable sofas and armchairs for resting during daily breaks. With regard to private homes the situation is very different as I usually manage to create a relationship of great feeling with the clients who feel free to share not only their needs but also their desires. I always tell them that the house is a dream and I have to be the interpreter of

2 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ INE | JULY/ AUG 2024

their dreams. So unlike hotels, where the client is deeply involved more in the initial phase followed by the project finalization and final approval, with private clients there is an almost daily relationship until the very end of the project. In fact, I involve them in every phase of the construction site starting from the division of the spaces to the choice of furnishings, colors, objects as well as works of art. Is your work mainly based on your own creative conceptualizations or do you draw inspiration from elsewhere? It depends. Sometimes I get unconsciously influenced by everything that surrounds me and that I absorb living in a city like Milan, where design can be felt everywhere. Certainly, my numerous trips for work and pleasure have also given me the opportunity to deal with very stimulating experiences both from an artistic and a creative point of view. Other times I am inspired just by small details that strike me and lead me to focus a project on a specific style. For example, when I developed the project for a Milanese apartment, the “Jugendstil” style of the railing of the building stairs worked as a starting point for the mood of the

83 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE |

JULY/AUG 2024

project. How imperative is it for you to create mood boards in your design process? Preparing mood boards is very important both for me and for the client. In fact, when preparing a mood board, I really immerse myself in the project, with every detail being well-defined. Moreover, mood boards greatly facilitate illustrating the project to the client because I have the opportunity to let them touch the materials, fabrics, surfaces; all elements that will make up the project. Is there a specific texture you are drawn to in interiors? Not one, but many different ones depending on the mood of the project. To give an example, I am currently working simultaneously in Portocervo on the Emerald Coast and Forte Dei Marmi in Tuscany. In Portocervo the house is immersed in a very wild and natural landscape, so I thought of using linens, raffia, gauze, woods, and brushed stones to have a soft effect with a natural color palette. In Forte Dei Marmi the villa being restyled is modern and without a precise personality, so I decided to use a contemporary design introducing very bright and lively colors such as turquoise, coral red, and Mediterranean blue. I featured the rooms by using some iconic pieces of Italian design. And a favorite color? It’s difficult to answer this question because there are many colors that I like but I can’t deny that my favorite color is blue with all its shades, starting from aquamarine to navy blue passing through light blues up to Royal blue. My job gives me the opportunity to choose colors from a variety of sample books of both fabrics and wall finishing products, creating truly unique combinations. You were tasked with the brand-new suites at the exquisite Hilton Molino Stucky Venice. What served as inspiration for the end product? First of all, I wanted to stress the colors of the lagoon on some furniture details. The water of the lagoon has a unique color depicted by a water green tone tending towards jade green with mother-of-pearl shades. The leitmotif I chose was the aqua green color of the lagoon which you see in the Toile

De Venise of the screens that characterize the headboards of the beds, in the herringbone of the fabric of the curtains, in the fabric of the armchairs and sofas, all produced by Rubelli, a well-known Venetian company. For the lighting I chose lamps produced by Italamp made with Murano glass. The furniture, supplied by Status Contract, was made with carbon fiber used to build racing sailing boats. Its wooden parts are lacquered in black china, a country and culture with a long history of trading spices and materials that have been brought to Venice since the time of Marco Polo. The paintings that Grecale created specifically for the suites are embellished with gold leaf brushstrokes recalling the flashes of the mosaic vaults of St. Mark’s Basilica. The world-famous Venice Carnival gave me the idea of drawing a handful of confetti thrown onto carpets. Were there challenges with the project? The first time I entered the suite at Hilton Molino Stucky, I noticed a lot of potential when it comes to the use of materials and colors which were very deep-colored and heavy looking, so I decided to introduce plenty of light. I chose a Zoffany color called Half Mushroom for the wall, aquamarine green fabric for the upholstery and screens above the headboard, a handful of confetti thrown on top for the carpets, and Tiffany green Murano glass for the lighting. As it is a historical building and a flour mill, the history was an important part of the project, both in terms of inspiration as well as in terms of structural design. Did you incorporate sustainable aspects into the design? Sustainability is a topic close to everyone’s heart. In fact, this hotel as well as all the other hotels that are part of Hilton undertake numerous activities and initiatives that aim to achieve Hilton’s 2030 environmental and sustainability goals. As for the interior design, where possible, I chose materials from companies like Rubelli that have a great focus on sustainability. In addition, I selected long-lasting materials to avoid unnecessary waste. Today it is fundamental to integrate sustainability into every aspect of our lives, including hospitality and design. This is the key to be-

| UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ INE | JULY/ AUG 2024

have in a socially responsible way with a focus on sustainability. Did you try to make use of local artisans? I used many Venetian elements such as Murano glass or the fabrics of Rubelli, a well-known Venetian company. Then I collaborated with Italian artisans from the well-known Brianza District which is famous worldwide for Made in Italy. What can guests expect when staying in the new suites? When guests arrive in Venice, they expect to be able to experience a magical stay, full of emotions, history, art, and relaxation. Hilton Molino Stucky Venice can offer all this thanks to the particular architecture of the building and its location - Giudecca island - where they can take refuge, chill and experience an authentic atmosphere after a day exploring the busy city center. The furnishings and the mood of the suites contribute to all this - giving the sensation of living in a unique atmosphere with an evocative experience in every detail of the magic of Venice.

SABI SABI AMBER VILLA The Jewel in the Earth Lodge Crown | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS

Founded by the Loon family in 1979, Sabi Sabi is a beacon of sustainability, conservation and luxury. The jewel in the crown is Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge, with the redesigned Amber Villa a sparkling diamond.

S

ituated at the very end of a sandy path that leads to the Earth Lodge suites, Sabi Sabi’s Amber Villa is the culmination of all things luxury. Following a refurbishment in 2023, the spacious villa is the perfect escape for a family of four who wish to experience the ultimate in exclusivity. Arriving at the front door, which is obscured from sight as it’s shielded by the natural surroundings, the imposing wooden structure is framed by three tall black pots, one housing Cotyledon Orbiculata, also known as Pig’s Ear, and the other two contain Spekboom, a bright small, green-leafed plant found in South Africa. A rustle in the bush forces me to look up, and just out of view, a family of waterbuck with some youngsters are grazing peacefully. Lodge Manager Alta pushes the door handle to welcome us into our villa, and my daughter and I collectively gasp at the scale and size of the dwelling. Measured at around 2,600 sq. ft., the villa comprises a lounge area, a bar/coffee/snack area, a study/desk area where you can let your inner artist out with paint supplies, a bedroom with twins beds, a bathroom, a main

suite with en-suite bathroom, and an exercise area with a bicycle, treadmill and weights. Stepping outside onto our private veranda, there is a comfortable seating area with a bespoke couch, stylish black chairs, wooden tables and two hanging (pod) chairs. A pool, twin loungers and two outside umbrellas complete this stunning picture. With an increase in the demand for families traveling together and staying in one space, the Amber Presidential Suite was converted into the private and family-friendly residence, Amber Villa. “The main building was kept the same,” Lodge Manager Marco tells me. “There were a few additions implemented to enhance the former space, which used to be a 1-bedroom suite, a study, a kitchen (should guests wished to have brought their private chef ), and a steam shower. What Amber Villa offers now is the epitome of privacy and luxury. The door at the tea & coffee station was closed off to construct a storeroom for the villa, and an extra window was installed in that area to let in more natural light. The second bathroom was redone in its entirety – it was stripped down, and a window was fitted in the shower for a full view of the wilderness outside. A wall was built to house a second bedroom with twin beds and a dressing & vanity area, ideal for children or young adults. In the master suite, the ornate trunk of a Matumi tree is a work of art – a beautiful original carved headboard and suffice to say, it remains there as a focal point. New sliding doors pave the way to the outside area, where a new wooden ceiling and wooden fans add to the ambiance of the great outdoors. The deck by the swimming pool was redone and through the entire villa, the concrete floors were replaced with a quartz carpet.” Tasked with breathing new life into the space were long-term Sabi Sabi partners, Dakota Design and heading up the project was Amanda Strydom, Senior Interior Designer. “Much of the architecture was retained”, Amanda says. “Including the unique plaster wall finish. This is a traditional plaster made using earth (mud) from the area mixed with straw, making Earth Lodge so unique, you won’t find a traditional painted wall here! Two large features that were kept were the timber counter at the entrance, as well as the tree trunk installation in the main bedroom. The bar counter is a statement piece – with the tree reaching up to the roof and its organic lines – we enhanced it with recessed lighting, so that all the intricacies of the piece are highlighted. In the main bedroom, the large

tree sprouts from behind the headboard, which makes for a dramatic and bold feature.” The color palette that Dakota Design used for the Amber Suite is a mix of neutrals, blending in with the environment. They cleverly incorporated small pops of chartreuse and green, drawing from the rich colors of local flora in the area. Limestone tiles in the bathroom are juxtaposed with accents of copper, while Kiaat timber vanities add warmth and richness. A natural leather patina sits beautifully against linen upholstery. “We used the natural surroundings of Earth Lodge as the jumping off point - the textures, colors and shapes that surround the Amber Villa were the inspiration for the interiors,” Amanda explains. “Art pieces were commissioned that tell the stories of the local flora & fauna, and guests get to see two very special works of art by South African artist Sarah Kelly.” Using traditional mud plaster for the walls at Earth Lodge, the interior design team had to ensure that spaces are bright and airy – the rooms can become dark very easily. The large window in the study nook allows for both morning and afternoon light, and a large skylight in the same area washes the room in natural illumination. Utilizing artificial lighting, drama is created with recessed LEDs in alcoves, washing down on to curtains and accentuating architectural features as the sun starts setting. Expanding upon the family-centric design of the Villa, the addition of the second bedroom was imperative as it incorporates many of the original features found in the luxury suites at Earth Lodge, such as the tailor-made art installation above the headboard. Areas including the lounge, bar and terrace spaces are all designed with one thing in mind – the family. With different seating options, there is a place for everyone. “From a design aesthetic, what makes Amber Villa uniquely special is that we paid attention to every small detail within the villa,” Amanda concludes, “Luxury elements were introduced without being austere. The overall visual is considered and detailed, but with the guest’s comfort in mind. It can be challenging doing a fit-out in the bush with temperatures soaring during the day and becoming bitterly cold at night. It is critical for us to choose finishes that can handle this climate and still maintain the luxury aspect.” www.sabisabi.com

Paris’s original palace hotel has just had a makeover, and its new collection of individually designed rooms and suites is a masterful blend of modern comfort and classical elegance.

O

h, if these walls could talk. In 1935, Le Meurice opened so that discerning travelers from the British upper classes could find the comforts of high society in Paris’s historic center, and in the two centuries since, it’s rightfully earned its reputation as L’Hôtel des Rois (The Hotel of Kings). This glorious grand dame - the first hotel in Paris to receive ‘palace’ status - has seen its guestbook signed by countless visitors of bona fide and celebrity royalty, from England’s Queen Victoria to Beyonce “Queen Bey” Knowles. But Le Meurice is perhaps even better known as a favorite haunt for boundary-pushing artists from Paris’s golden eras: Picasso was married here in 1918, and Salvador Dalí (and his pet ocelots) took up residence in the Presidential Suite for a month every year, for more than three decades. Le Meurice’s legacy as Paris’s spiritual home for artists and thinkers lives on in its décor. Make no mistake: you’ll immediately get a sense of 18th-century elegance when you step into the lobby, courtesy of the hotel’s gilded portraits, marble tops, and glittering chandeliers. But notice also the frosted mirror: a blank canvas that summons the playful spirit of Dalí by inviting guests to scribble and sprawl upon it with their fingertips. Then there’s the double-seated chair, influenced by Dalí’s penchant for what he liked

The opulence continues into the recently renovated rooms and suites. Since 2019, designers Charles Jouffre, Margaux Lally, and Luc Berger have worked alongside French artisans to ensure that each newly enhanced room has been decorated with a uniquely personal touch. The result is an artful blend of modern comfort and exclusive craftsmanship, exhibited in the light-rich rooms’ hand-drawn wallpapers, stone marquetry, and lavish textiles. The curtains, for example, crafted from voided velvets and gold-and-silver-brocaded silk, come from a family-owned manufacturer that’s been in the luxury fabrics business since the 18th century. from Declercq Passementerie evoke timeless, Versailles-style sophistication without overstepping into gaudy territory. The crowning glory of Le Meurice’s masterful renovation project is undoubtedly the rooftop Belle Etoile Penthouse Suite. This four-bedroom suite is flooded with natural light, bringing a warm glow to its dappled color palette of creams, golds, and bronzes. Rich trimmings include original artworks and shimmering fabrics, while the magnificent bathroom is ensconced from floor to ceiling in gleaming marble. Even the wraparound terrace, where landscape designer Pierre Alexandre Risser’s original design emulates the Tuileries Gardens across the road, has been treated to a touch-up. From here unfurls a sweeping 360-degree panorama of Paris. Many of the city’s most famous landmarks can be enjoyed all at once, from the Eiffel Tower to Montmartre’s Sacré Coeur. of the primest real estate spots in Paris: just a short walk through the sculpture-adorned Tuileries is arguably Europe’s most famous gallery, the Louvre, while the luxury boutiques of Rue Saint-Honoré and Place Vendôme are dangerously close at hand. Le Meurice is more than just a feast for the eyes: diners are spoilt for choice here too. Firstly, there’s the two Michelin-starred Restaurant Le Meurice Alain Ducasse, where Executive Chef Amaury Bouhours’s classical menu based around simple ingredients is served in a luxurious, rococo-style dining hall modeled on the grand Salon de la Paix at the Château de Versailles. Guests at the hotel can take breakfast here too, beneath giant chandeliers dripping with crystals. The restaurant’s renovation was overseen by avante-garde designer Philippe Starck. hotel’s second restaurant. Restaurant Le Dalí is named after, and inspired by, the hotel’s most celebrated and most eccentric former resident. The decor features Dalí-esque touches, including a leaning mirror, oversized armchairs pulled up to the dining tables, and a dreamlike painting on the ceiling by Philippe’s artist daughter, Ara Starck. Le Dalí’s menu is constantly rotating, based on the seasonal ingredients available from local French producers, but the main draw might be the desserts: esteemed pâtissier Cédric Grolet’s ‘sculpted fruits’ have earned him the title of world’s best pastry chef several times over. Like the many artists who’ve passed through Le Meurice’s doors - and the ones who’ve had a hand in shaping its design - Grolet is a master of his craft.

The hotel was inaugurated in 1956 thanks to the well-known Italian film producer Angelo Rizzoli’s love for Ischia, who made the Albergo della Regina Isabella the meeting place of the most famous characters in the world of cinema. The harmonious style of the hotel is typical of the Mediterranean as well as the variety and colors of its hand-painted majolica, the brass door frames, the chandeliers and the furniture, all of which are original pieces. This make the Regina Isabella Resort an authentic ‘50s style hotel, which the current owner, the Carriero family, proudly preserves. What are your favorite aspects of this hotel? Who is your target market? Traditionally the Regina Isabella has always been a hotel with a high percentage of Italian guests, and in recent years we have witnessed a pleasant increase in various markets, especially England, the USA, Australia and France. Which is your favorite room and why? After 40 years of professional life lived at Regina Isabella, even today I find it difficult to choose my favorite room. Each room in the hotel is different from the other, both for the panoramic view and for the colors of the majolica tiles and the colors of the walls. The suite dedicated to Elizabeth Taylor certainly has a very particular charm. The hotel is also known for its gastronomy, tell us about the Michelin experience there?

With its gourmet cuisine, the restaurant Indaco caters to the most discerning of tastes. It overlooks a small bay and its name comes from the indigo color of the water at twilight. Guests are seated either in the dining room or outside on the wide jetty. Dining becomes a truly romantic experience, directly on the sea and with the stars twinkling over the charming village of Lacco Ameno The cuisine is predominantly seafood and includes the freshest farm-to-table products of the island as well as the hotel’s private garden. Menu items include fresh pastas, freshly caught fish brought to the kitchen by the fishermen themselves, vegetables from our land (which vary seasonally) and Neapolitan desserts, which represent the typical local cuisine. Parmigiana di melanzane (eggplant parmigiana), fried slices of eggplant with tomato, mozzarella and parmesan cheese, is a must! Another must-order? THE PIG HOTEL Exploring the Charm and Sophistication of the English Countryside | BY DAWN WILSON

I always say the best vacations begin with your choice of accommodations; in this case, it’s no different. Staying at The Pig hotels in the English countryside was one of the best decisions I made, as they set the tone for the rest of my visit. Each one of their charming hotels was as welcoming and luxurious as the one before it. They are not just known for their desirable locations, décor, and furnishings; they are also well-known for their farm-to-table restaurants. It is why they are considered a restaurant with rooms. This speaks volumes about the quality of food served at their hotel restaurants.

O

ur exploration of the English countryside started at The Pig near Bath Hotel. It is located in the picturesque Mendip Hills countryside of Somerset and is a charming country house hotel that effortlessly blends rustic charm with modern luxury. The interior design of the hotel is a delightful mix of shabby chic and vintage elegance, featuring an eclectic collection of antique furniture, mismatched fabrics, and quirky accessories. The walls are adorned with hunting trophies, botanical prints, and countryside-themed artwork, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The rooms are individually designed, each offering a unique and cozy retreat. Expect plush beds with high-quality linens, vintage-style furnishings, and delightful touches like clawfoot tubs, wood-burning fireplaces, and countryside views. While I loved all the rooms I viewed, I was most impressed with my cozy room with its wood-burning stove. It was just what I needed on a cold, rainy day like the day of our arrival. The attention to detail is impeccable, with a mix of textures and patterns that create a homely yet sophisticated feel. The hotel’s restaurant is a true highlight, renowned for its farm-to-table dining experience. The menu focuses on locally sourced, seasonal ingredients, much of which is grown in the hotel’s kitchen garden. The dining room itself is a charming space with rustic wooden tables, exposed beams, and large windows that let in plenty of natural light.

Like the many restaurants we visited, dishes showcase fresh, locally sourced produce, including seafood, meats, and vegetables from nearby suppliers and the restaurant’s private gardens, crafted into creative and flavorful culinary creations. The ambiance is elegant yet approachable, featuring a stylish decor that complements the natural surroundings. Known for its exceptional food and warm hospitality, Hartnett & Holder Co is a destination for culinary enthusiasts seeking a blend of creativity and culinary excellence.

Our trip to the English countryside simply would not have been complete without a visit to The Bombay Sapphire Distillery which gave us a captivating journey into the world of gin-making. Situated in the historic Laverstoke Mill, we explored the beautifully restored Victorian buildings and learned about the distillation process through interactive displays. The tour highlights the unique vapor infusion technique with botanicals sourced from around the globe. Our visit ended with a fun and entertaining tasting session that allowed us to savor the distinct flavors of Bombay Sapphire gin varieties. The experience is enhanced by the stunning setting along the River Test, making it a memorable blend of history, craftsmanship, and sensory exploration for gin enthusiasts and visitors. While this was a great introduction to the beauty that lies beyond the streets of London, England, it has left a lasting impression that leaves me wanting to explore more of the countryside, especially more of The Pig hotels. They were the perfect place to start our days and end our evenings. I can’t wait to see how the rest of their charming and sophisticated properties stack up!

eparting from Cape Town International Airport on a Tuesday morning, my daughter and I are beyond excited to take flight with our favorite Southern African airline, Airlink. The Embraer E-190 is parked on the runway, and the promise of rain doesn’t deter the warmth of the on-board hospitality as we make our way to the iconic Skukuza airport, in the heart of the Kruger National Park. The convenience of a direct flight underscores the importance that Airlink places on their comprehensive route network, with accessibility being key, making them stand out from the rest. Arriving on time at Skukuza airport, we collect our luggage and are met at the arrivals area by guide Mayneth, who whisks us away in Jock Safari Lodge’s 4x4 game drive vehicle. This mode of transport is to make spotting animals along the way that much easier from an elevated point of view. We encounter impala and elephants during our 50-minute drive to Jock Safari Lodge and when we reach the property, we are warmly welcomed by the staff. Lunch is waiting and we feast on Kudu burgers and fries at our table on the deck overlooking the pool where most meals are enjoyed. The cuisine at Jock Safari Lodge is incredible, perfectly prepared by a team of chefs under the leadership of Head Chef Sam. For breakfast, guests can choose between pastries, fruit, cereal, yogurt and hot breakfast; for lunch, there is a variety of dishes to suit all tastes and for dinner, we dine in the boma. It’s

not uncommon to see wildlife on the sandy banks of the river, such as buffalo or herds of elephants. Our suite for the next two nights is the luxurious Delagoa Bay Suite, with sweeping views over the seasonal Mitomeni and Biyamiti rivers. With only twelve tented suites seemingly floating above the riverbed, wildlife can be seen from the comfort of your Sala, which is transformed into a haven of tranquility at night if you wish to sleep under the stars, as we opt to do on our first night. It’s a sensory experience, with the sounds of hyenas and lions reverberating through the stillness of the night. The Jock Safari Lodge suites all have different names, each one lending its moniker from the surroundings. Suites are beautifully decorated with interspersions of white bedding, dark wooden furniture and tan leather chairs in your private lounge area and a dreamy atmosphere is created when the mosquito net encloses the bed at night. The bathroom is stunning, with white & gray marble tops, black taps and a white tiled wall in the shower that resembles a brick pattern. For those guests who prefer a bath over a shower, simply step outside on your deck and voila – there is a freestanding bath which you can use any time of 1

the day or night, with or without bubbles. On the outside veranda, there is a plunge pool and sun loungers for guests who would like to spend time soaking up the sun. Set in a 15,000 acre private concession, it should never be underestimated when a lodge has exclusive traversing rights, especially if off-roading is allowed to get closer to the animals, and sitting a few feet away from a big male leopard at a safe and respectful distance has everyone clamoring for their cameras. The leopard becomes a point of conversation, and we sit in absolute awe admiring his magnificence. Finding the Windmill Pride of lions on an afternoon game drive is a delight as we watch the two young cubs blundering through the reeds of the dry riverbed. The pride consists of four lionesses and seven cubs of varying ages, which leads to some entertaining antics. Concluding our safari sitting ten feet away from a majestic male leopard, we realize that Jock Safari Lodge’s motto ‘More Than Just A Game Drive’ is so very true. www.jocksafarilodge.com

A Luxurious Weekend at

The Ritz-Carlton Portland, OR | BY TRACY BEARD

P

ortland, Oregon, is seeing a resurgence. Covid-19 was the catalyst that began the downfall of the city, followed by crime, drugs, and homelessness, and the town became a very dark place to visit. After staying away for two years, I recently spent a weekend in the downtown area and saw the town coming alive again. The Ritz-Carlton, Portland, is new and stands tall, marking a stunning change in the city skyline. It brings a new sense of prosperity and luxury to this once-thriving

metropolis. Today, the culinary scene that struggled over the last few years is now budding like a spring flower, ready to paint the city with color and make it a desired destination once again. Construction began in 2020, and on October 31, 2023, the five-star hotel, The Ritz-Carlton, Portland, opened in the heart of downtown Portland. Designers successfully brought the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest into the hotel. The lobby, nicknamed Forest Hall, sets the tone with drapes

resembling trees, lush plants, birds, various trees, and twinkling lights. The décor in the rooms and suites celebrates the evergreen landscape of the region. For years, The Ritz-Carlton brand had a particular style for its hotel décor; it was beautiful and luxurious and had a consistent and unchanging design. Today, Ritz-Carlton designers are taking elements from the local area and designing new hotels to reflect the local region. The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad, and the Ritz-Carlton, Port-

land, are the first to showcase this new design. HOTEL OVERVIEW

Shortly after I arrived for my weekend stay, Eliana Onsalo, Director of Sales, gave me a grand tour of the hotel. The 35-story building boasts 251 rooms, 41 of which are executive suites. Floors 1-20 comprise the hotel, and floors 21-35 are residences. The first floor is the lobby, and the second is for events featuring 17,900 square feet divided between nine rooms. The specially designed meeting room carpet, a stunning blue and white topographical aerial map of Mt. Hood. Local businesses rent floors 3 – 7, and upscale hotel rooms and blissful suites comprise floors 8 - 18. The wellness/spa is on floor 19, and The Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge and the Bellpine restaurant are on the 20th floor.

ROOMS AND SUITES

The Ritz-Carlton, Portland hallway floors showcase the Lewis and Clark trail. Artwork from talented local artists decorates the walls, and champagne copper picture lights illuminate the art. Soft-toned wood accents evoke images of the Oregon wilderness’s presence, and the back wall of each elevator resembles rain racing down the outside of a windowpane. Leather goods, mirrors, and alluring fabrics continue to bring the feel of the forest into the hotel. Every room offers signature amenities, including luxurious Frette linens, cozy slippers, and plush robes. The marvelous suites boast a trunkstyle bar adorned with stitched leather, champagne copper, and wood detailing. All suites feature bars with stitched leather, champagne copper, and wood detailing. when traveling and eventually settling in Oregon in the 1800s. I stayed in one of the stunning executive suites, each one perfectly placed in a corner of the hotel. I arose early in the morning and relished sipping a cup of hot Nespresso while gazing at the city lights. I watched the sun rise behind Mt. Hood and cherished the moment when the dark sky transformed into hues of pink, and the rays of light brought with it the stirrings of urban life after only a few hours of reprieve. Guests interested in stepping up their experience another notch will love The Ritz-Carlton Club Level. The Club provides personalized service and extra attention to detail. Located on the 20th floor, displaying spectacular views of Forest Park and the West Portland hills, guests can enjoy multiple gastronomic presentations throughout the day.

RESTAURANTS

Michelin-recognized Chef Pedro Almeida sits at the helm of the culinary program at the hotel, and he uses ingredients from local fishermen, farmers, and foragers for his culinary inspiration. BELLPINE

Bellpine is the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, featuring gorgeous panoramic views, tableside experiences, and professional and warm service. With the bounty of exceptional ingredients available in the area, Chef Almeida and his team create astounding dishes. The masterful mixologists use local ingredients to craft exciting cocktails to sample. Bellpine is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the wine cellar stores a first-class wine selection to pair with its incredible cuisine. During my visit, I enjoyed a flavorful avocado toast topped with arugula and a poached egg for breakfast. The dish was tasty, healthy, and a fabulous way to start the day. MEADOWRUE

The Lobby Bar Meadowrue is like a secret garden in a lush Pacific Northwest Forest. Open from 7 am to 11 pm, guests in the city can begin the day with delicious coffee, pastries, and other breakfast options. Later in the day, the space becomes one of the top classy bars in Portland, featuring artisan cocktails, small plates, and a formidable assortment of wine and beers. I listened to one of the local musicians play one evening and enjoyed a Sweet Pea Vesper made

with Monkey 47, sweet pea-infused Absolute 80, Lillet Blanc, and a sugar snap pea. The cocktail was unique, tasty, and refreshing. In the afternoon, I sat in the lounge area of Meadowrue and had a decadent bowl of butternut squash soup with pumpkin seeds and a cheese platter with crackers. It was the perfect afternoon meal on a rainy Portland day. THE RITZ-CARLTON, SPA, PORTLAND

Located on the nineteenth floor is Portland’s first luxury spa with an infinity-edge pool and windows showcasing the Cascade mountains. The 4,400-square-foot fitness facility includes a yoga studio, sauna and steam rooms, a time capsule chair, and a snow shower for cold therapy. Guests of the hotel and people coming to or living in the city can book massages, facials, and body treatments. TIMELESS CAPSULE CHAIR

One session in the timeless capsule chair was mind-blowing. The doctor who designed the chair found that these sessions help people with PTSD, insomnia, migraines, and anxiety, often triggering a complete emotional reset. Clients choose a recording for whatever emotional reset they would like. While sitting, the chair vibrates in a specific section and at a certain intensity based on the selected recording. Clients have a warm, weighted blanket laid over their body, and an eye pillow covers their eyes. The Stress Relief recording provides a guided

| UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ INE | JULY/ AUG 2024

meditation; the chair vibrates in the lower back region, and most clients relax but do not fall asleep. The Delta Dreams is 60 minutes long with only magnetic sounds. The sound changes between the left and right sides of the headphones and is perceived as waves, while the chair vibrates from side to side as if someone is trying to put you to sleep. The Neo Nap is like Delta Dreams but only lasts 20 minutes. Soul Sock starts with complex magnetic sounds and creates a feeling of agitation. The vibration intensity of the chair shifts from gentle to intense and back again. This session is supposed said to help clients feel more grounded and energized. Emotional Reset begins with a guided meditation recommending specific breathing patterns. The sound of rain is in the background, along with the noise of birds. The chair vibrates according to the sounds of nature, making the client feel safe and think about positive things in their lives. I listened to the Nature’s Journey recording, which featured the sound of rain and fire and relaxed me, but I did not fall asleep. It was a fabulous, relaxing experience, and I highly recommend it. Although the city is not yet back to its former glory, the glitz and glamour of The Ritz-Carlton, Portland, and the exceptional dining found within two miles, including Langbaan and Kann, should entice visitors to dine and sleep in the City of Roses once again. 

LANGBAAN One of Portland Oregon’s Top Restaurants | BY TRACY ELLEN BEARD

LangBaan, a culinary gem in Portland, is a haven for food enthusiasts. Led by the culinary prowess of Executive Chef and Owner Earl Ninsom, Partner and Executive Chef Kitsanaruk Ketkuaviriyanont, and their team of experts, LangBaan offers a unique tasting menu that represents a theme or region. This menu, a delightful journey of flavors, follows a pattern of a few small bites, soup, a crudo or salad, and a large family-style spread, promising a culinary experience like no other.

EARL NINSOM

Ninsom is from Bangkok, Thailand. Growing up, he spent his summers cooking over a charcoal fire with his grandmother in southern Thailand. In 2000, Ninsom graduated from college and moved to Los Angeles, California, where he washed dishes and prepped food at his uncle’s restaurant. The family moved to Portland, Oregon, in 2009, and Ninsom opened his first restaurant, Paadee, which means “to bring good things.” Later, Ninsom opened LangBaan, the 24-seat tasting menu restaurant, in a small space attached to PaaDee. He paired the menu with beverages selected by Alan Akwai. In 2015, LangBaan was a James Beard “Best New Restaurant” semifinalist. In the fall of 2021, LangBaan found its new home at 1818 NW 23rd Place in Portland, a space that perfectly complements its culinary excellence. Today, two seatings are available four days a week: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, offering more opportunities to savor this unique dining experience.

KITSANARUK KETKUAVIRIYANONT

Ketkuaviriyanont loves Chinese food. His grandparents are from China, and he gained an appreciation for the flavors of this cuisine by cooking with his grandmother and by visiting Chinatown in Bangkok during the Chinese New Year. During these trips, he was educated about the culture of the Chinese-Thai people. He learned about cooking techniques, the culinary flavors, and the local produce. He also began to understand the Thai style of eating, where respective flavors of salty, spicy, fresh, and sometimes smelly work together in harmony, each dish complementing the others. AN ISAAN-INSPIRED DINNER MEAL

Recently, I had the pleasure of joining Allison from Travel Oregon for a dinner at LangBaan. The evening was a culinary adventure, with smart and delicious wine pairings enhancing the flavors of the menu. The inspiration for the menu that evening was Isaan (also spelled Isan) cuisine, a vibrant and diverse culinary tradition from the northeast region of Thailand. With its unique flavors and cultural significance, Isaan cuisine was a perfect choice for a memorable dining experience at LangBaan. Isaan food is less common outside of Thailand, but inside the country, it can be found everywhere, from street food vendors in Chiang Mai to high-end restaurants in Bangkok; this is probably because many of the people have left Isaan to look for work in the more affluent cities and brought their food with them. Isaan food differs from what Westerners typically think of when they think of Thai food. Predominant flavors and ingredients include chili peppers, lime, peanuts, dried shrimp, fresh fruits and vegetables, sticky rice, cilantro, mint, and other fresh herbs. Although the layers of flavor are very complex, the food preparation is relatively straightforward and faster to assemble. Where curries often require hours of simmering, clean, bright-flavored salads form the backbone of Isaan cuisine. Marinated grilled and fried meats accompanied by sticky rice are typically paired with one of the region’s “tams” or salads. DELICIOUS DINING

Sharing communal dishes is common in Thai food culture, and family gatherings are a huge part of the Isaan eating tradition. Allison and I each enjoyed various individual dishes, and later, we shared dishes accompanied by rice. I loved the Miang Som with shrimp, cara cara orange, caramelized fish sauce, peanut, coconut, and betel leaf. These heavenly bites were filled with multiple flavors and offered a satisfying crunch. They paired fabulously with the 2021 Sottoilnoce Lambrusco Cattabrega Emilia-Romagna, IT. I have made this particular dish for parties in my home, and it is always received well. The Kanom Krok, with a Hokkaido scallop, coconut puree, lemongrass, and lime leaf, served in a crispy rice cup, was another favorite and was best eaten in a single bite. The scallop in the coconut cream was sweet and tender, and the rice cup added a beautiful crunch. This dish is a favorite at LangBaan and has been on the menu since day one. The Sai Grok Isaan, a pork dumpling bathed in a bone broth with glass noodles, brown butter, palm sugar, chili powder, and some radish, was delicious. Moving into the heartier fare, the Tom Prape with salmon, shimeji, shallot, and crispy rice in an aromatic broth was flavorful and light, the perfect dish to serve on a wet, chilly night in Portland, Oregon. Opposites attract with this pairing. The initial taste of this dish was robust, ar| UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZ INE | JULY/ AUG 2024

omatic, and acidic, and it is balanced perfectly with the peachy sweetness of the 2022 Vollenweider Riesling Kabinett, ‘Trarbacher Burgherg,’ from Mosel, Germany. The Sok Lek, Wagyu New York beef with beet, beef fat, broccolini, pea tendrils, and fried garlic arrived garnished with watermelon radish. Molly, part of the bar team, paired this course with a 2023 Terres Promises A Ma Gjise Provence. The tart notes of cranberry and cherry cut through the fattiness of the beef dish. Khao Neow, the black and purple sticky rice wrapped in a banana leaf, was served in honor of the Isaan region, which grows the majority of sticky rice in Thailand. The sticky rice arrived with a relish, beef brisket, and quite a few other small dishes. The 2001 Chateau de Sau Rivesaltes Rancio, Roussillon from France, with a stunning caramelized color and notes of maple syrup, stood up to the two desserts. The Rice Khao Lam, prepared in a bamboo cup, was a sticky rice pudding with bean paste, coconut, strawberry, and sesame candied brittle. The Pang Cha-Thai consisted of jackfruit sponge cake, Thai tea, rum, coconut yogurt, and lime leaf. As is typical of Asian desserts, the two offerings were light and tasty but not overly sweet. Although LangBaan’s tasting menu consists of numerous courses, they are all portioned out so that there is enough to enjoy all the flavors and textures of each course but not so much that you walk away uncomfortable at the end of the evening. LangBaan is an excellent place to enjoy a Thai-centric dinner with one or more friends and family. Diners can choose from a fun and exciting drink menu or partake in the professionally paired wines.

Sousòl is a place for everyone; the bartenders’ craft zero-proof and non-alcoholic drinks with the same care as full-spirit cocktails. As the owner of Kann and Sousòl, Gregory is a regular trail runner and an avid traveler. He is notorious for using worldwide ingredients and is recognized for his infusion of unique methods while balancing his Haitian heritage to create incredible seasonal cuisine with tantalizing flavors. The Cuisine at Kann Dining at Kann was one of my most memorable culinary experiences. Although I have a fan-

tastic job, where I frequently dine at establishments that serve innovative and delicious food, Kann was a new experience for me. I sat at the chef ’s bar/table and watched the team stoke the fire and prepare dishes that enchanted and mesmerized guests. The spacious, open-kitchen restaurant was boisterous and filled with energy. I have never tried Haitian cuisine, although I have enjoyed Caribbean, African, and many other exotic foods. However, the tastes and textures at Kann were delightfully new and surprising, exotic, and yet somehow familiar. There was nothing I had not eaten before ceviche, pork, plantains, chicken, and pineapple. Yet, the way Chef Gregory put together the seasoning, cooking, and presentation was fresh and exciting. The flavors and textures were perfectly balanced with sweet, sour, and spicy, then combined with tender and crunchy ingredients. The colors popped off the plates. Nothing swam in sauce, nor was anything dry. Each expertly designed dish delighted all the senses. Visually, the dishes were art. The aromas were intriguing and enticed diners to try more. The crunching sound and the rhapsodic vibe circulating throughout the room resounded above the kitchen noise. Textures were varied and never dull or mundane. The tastes were riveting, and every other sense was combined with the delicious flavors to make each plate so much more than simply memorable. I cannot wait to return and taste the dishes I had no room for on my first visit. My dinner My experience at Kann was reminiscent of a smorgasbord of flavors. I began with the Akra, crispy taro root fritters served with remoulade. Akra is a traditional Haitian dish made by grating and seasoning taro root. The mixture is formed into balls and then deep-fried until the outside is crunchy and the inside is tender. The remoulade was rich and slightly spicy. Akra is an appetizer that the chef ’s mother made for family celebrations. She fried these as she prepared the other dishes for the family feasts. The Griyo Twice Cooked Pork was served with bannann peze (fried plantains), sliced

avocado, and pikliz (pickled vegetable relish). Griyo is the national dish of Haiti and one of the most popular dishes at Kann. The pork, marinated in a Haitian seasoning called epis, was added with orange, lime, and habanero. Then, it was braised until tender and fired to add a crispy texture. A reduced cooking liquid made a glaze for the pork. Pikliz is the most well-recognized Haitian condiment. It is a spicy, crispy cabbage pickle with scotch bonnet chili and onion sprinkled into the cabbage to brighten fried food. This dish was not only delicious but Instagram-worthy. The Eggplant was phenomenal, prepared with a dried tomato relish and creole cream. The Lightly Cured Kampachi, also known as yellowtail, amberjack, or almaco jack, is a lean, fatty fish typically found in Japanese cuisine. The fish, sought after by chefs for its rich white flesh, has a high fat content and is clean with a sweet flavor that exhibits nutty notes. Kampachi has a firm texture and pairs well with many flavors. Chef Gregory served it with pickled jicama and smoked coconut milk. It was delicious. My main entrée was the Spice Glazed Chicken, which arrived with smoked fruit, ginger, and habanero. The entire chicken is cured overnight and then roasted to a beautiful golden color under a crust of ginger, black pepper, and rosemary. Luckily, I was smart enough not to finish each dish, and I saved room for dessert. The Baked Haiti was a coconut sponge cake with Bavarian cream, Haitian spiced pineapple, and charred meringue and basil. Cinnamon, star anise, vanilla, and lime seasoned the pineapple that studded the light coconut custard, all covered in a charred meringue. A reduction of pineapple juice, olive oil, and sea salt finished the dessert. This dish was one of the most flavorful and tasty desserts I have ever had. It made my list of top ten. Kann is currently one of Portland’s most popular restaurants. Make your reservation early so you, too, can sit at the Chef ’s Table.

TRIBUTARY HOTEL | BY TRACY ELLEN BEARD

T

ributary Hotel opened in McMinnville, Oregon, in July of 2022. Owners Shaun Kajiwara and Katie Jackson, from Jackson Family Wines, first saw the old hardware store in 2013 during a visit to Oregon wine country. They soon considered buying the building, which was close to its original condition. Today, this boutique luxury hotel, located in the renovated hardware store, is more than 100 years old. The hotel makes the perfect basecamp for discovering Willamette Valley’s delectable food and wine. The Tributary Hotel team offers exceptional service,

upscale accommodations, and outstanding dining experiences designed to connect guests to the region. TRIBUTARY HISTORY

A tour of the hotel is a must. During my recent stay with my daughter Brittney, Hanna guided us through the back of the hotel. Here, we meandered down a ramp that people once used to deliver hardware supplies by horse and carriage. We followed along, learning more about the hotel. We reached a wall decorated with small black-andwhite photos of eight different rivers in

Oregon. Each of the eight suites at the Tributary is named after one of those rivers. Hospitality comes first at Tributary; it begins from the moment of arrival until it is time to depart. The design of the hotel, restaurant, and bar, along with the staff’s enthusiasm and efforts, create a warm welcome, immersing guests into the soul of the region by helping them enjoy their surroundings through each of their five senses. Suite. Within each suite and throughout the hotel, products and decorations produced by talented Pacific Northwest artisans are on display. I loved the eucalyptus green wall with minimalist modern décor and the large black-and-white photo of the namesake river. Olaf Beckmann, a friend of the owners and a professional photographer, took the pictures. He is known for his ability to capture his surroundings. Other stunning pieces of art found in each suite are the wall hangings by Greg Klassen. These pieces depict aerial views of the namesake waterways found in the Pacific Northwest. The room interiors, decorated to the highest standards, are Scandinavian in style and focus on clean, simple lines, minimalism, and functionality without sacrificing any beauty. The furniture consists of comfortable Nordic pieces. The room colors and artwork bring the visual beauty of the outside into each room. The Siletz Suite included a gas fireplace, charming shelves filled with books, and an Aroma360 that dispensed the Shadow Dancing scent inspired by Tom Ford® Oud Wood with notes of eucalyptus, cedarwood, sandalwood, and vanilla. The pour over Ratio coffee maker produced a delicious cup of joe to start the day. The Caravan Coffee, made in Newberg, Oregon, imparts a delectable taste, and the selection of teas and the Fellow electric kettle make it easy to have a cup of tea in the afternoon or evening. I finish each day with time in the soaking tub. While immersed in the bath, encased in the water’s warmth, I recalled the importance of and reverence for water as the theme at the heart of the Tributary Hotel, ōkta restaurant, and ōkta farm and larder. Finally, while wrapped in my comfy robe and sitting by the fire, I savored the sound of quiet and relaxed in the peaceful surroundings found at Tributary. OKTA RESTAURANT

Executive Chef Matthew Lightner sits at the helm of the micro-seasonal culinary extravagance that diners experience at ōkta. The cuisine served for dinner, and the breakfast brought to each suite in the morning speaks of the terroir of the Willamette Valley. The delicious fresh ingredients, sourced from the ōkta farm and larder, are used to create mouthwatering dishes with a stunning variety of aromas, colors, and flavors. THE CELLAR

The Cellar, located directly below ōkta, has approximately 2000 bottles of wine. Ron Acierto, the wine and beverage director, loves well-round-

ed wine cellars. He has curated a selection of both local wines and ones from around the US and abroad. He also offers an extensive choice of spirits. Visitors to the bar can sip on delicious cocktails, savor spectacular wines, and choose from the Cellar Bar tasting menu that consists of a sampling of 5-6 courses from the ōkta menu. Guests can opt for all or just one course to enjoy in the well-appointed setting that features high-end leather couches and chairs for relaxing and tables for dining. The stunning wine room showcases the enticing display of beverages, and the well-dressed, friendly, and professional staff is eager to assist guests. The Cellar is approachable, and both hotel guests and visitors are free to come dressed to the nines or in more casual attire. During my time at The Cellar, I enjoyed a High Tide, a take on a French 75 made with Gray Whale Gin, Crémant Brut, and citrus; this was a lovely twist on one of my favorite cocktails. My daughter Brittney sipped on a Ceniza, the bar’s version of a margarita made with Astral Blanco Tequila and Hearth Lemon Cordial. The rim of the Ceniza was coated with a combination of salt and ash, giving the tasty cocktail a unique appearance. TRIBUTARY BREAKFAST

Breakfast, delivered to each suite in the morning, is a treat from the farm and should not be missed. The coddled egg was sweet and creamy with a light crunch from the sea salt. The quiche was tasty, and the freekeh with mushroom cream

was earthy and delicious. The frise salad with roasted rhubarb, lemon dressing, and cheese brought a bright note to the meal, and the multi-grain and seed toast with butter was familiar and added to this elaborate meal. The choice of apple butter or lemon curd allowed me to choose my flavors, and the mushrooms with balsamic vinegar were another tasty element. The citrus fruit juice made from freshly squeezed grapefruit and oranges was beautiful and refreshing, and the salty bacon and beets in Ponzu added more complexity to the spread. The lemon loaf was a delightful final touch with a dessert-like feel. Tributary Hotel, Oregon’s first member of Relais & Châteaux, is a fabulous place to stay and explore the Willamette Valley. The service is impeccable, the rooms are comfortable and upscale, and the food is a spectacular example of Willamette Valley’s finest.
