ÆLLA 60
Harks Back to the Beautiful Supercars of the 60s
Forget the name as this is a gorgeous retro themed supercar with a clear nod towards the 60s with its svelte proportions. The interestingly named Ælla-60 has been conjured up by Art Machines by Anthony Jannarelly. It is a beautiful restomod penned by designer Anthony Jannarelly. The 60s reference is clearly seen with the headlamps to the curvaceous snout inspired by old racing cars or sports cars. The voluptuous lines are well combined and take the best of retro design in a cohesive way. The older Ferrari cars and Alfa Romeos are also a probable influence but the design is clearly a reminder that angular modern cars are perhaps trying too hard while classical beauty is also cherished.
However, one would be hard-pressed to know that underneath, it is a Ferrari 360 Modena. Another reference point for the Ælla-60 is the 90s era of sports cars. Cars would be assembled by Podium Advanced Technologies, a company, based in Aosta, Italy. This company is known for the Glickenhaus SCG 007C, Lancia Delta Futurista, Eccentrica Diablo, and Porsche 928 Nardone. That is quite a delectable list of beautiful retromods.
While the 360 Modena was no slouch, the 3.6-liter V-8 has been further coaxed to 473 hp. However, importantly it comes with a proper 6-speed manual while not being a gated one. The manual gearbox is often a much-desired trait amongst restomods since they are about the experience rather than just raw speed. The cabin meanwhile is retro paradise with tan leather and bright switchgear along with a heavy tinge of retro being smeared all over. The car is also lightweight which means performance is matching those gorgeous looks since it will do 0 to 62 mph in a claimed 3.5 seconds.
That is fast and its nimble handing is guaranteed with those looks plus the manual gearbox will further add to its analogue driving experience. While we have seen collector cars like these being made in single digits, the Ælla-60 would have a production run of about 60 units- which is large. With such retromods having so much attention lavished on them; the price is also expectedly quite high at $895,380. However, for a bespoke supercar with such a gorgeous design, we think there would be enough takers since beautiful cars with an analogue touch are quite rare these days!
FERRARI ELECTRIC CAR
First and Crucial for the Brand
Think of Ferrari and visions of a low-slung supercar with a screaming V12 engine come to your head. Thankfully Ferrari continues to make them and will do in the future but it has also bowed down to the inevitable wave of electrification. Supercar makers have had to embrace electrification in one way or another with either hybrids or full-blown EVs. Ferrari has been dabbling in hybrids for years with the SF90 and the 296 GTB but soon the first full electric Ferrari will come. Yes, October 9 is when we get to see the first electric Ferrari and we can expect more surprises along the way. However, Ferrari making an electric car is not surprising since one must jump on the EV bandwagon with rivals also readying full electric cars.
That said, as seen with the Purosangue, the first electric Ferrari would be different and would be uniquely positioned. Not much has been spilled by Ferrari regarding its electric car and everything is kept under extreme secrecy but some details can be sketched out. We can expect the first electric Ferrari to be more of a four-seater rather than a sports car. It will be in the luxury sports GT segment and will seat four like the Purosangue but may not have four doors like the Purosangue. We also are certain that it would be one of the most technologically advanced Ferraris and pushing north of 1000 bhp.
Ferrari will be launching no less than six new cars but the EV would be the most important because a lot of expectations would be surrounding it. Of course, Ferrari will also go to extremes to ensure it sounds like a Prancing horse and has enough driving pleasure to justify the badge. Fast EVs are not rare with Tesla’s demolishing drag strips but the Ferrari EV will focus more on the emotional aspect of driving which many EVs lack. Unlike others, Ferrari will keep this electric car exclusive and you will not see the brand churning a lot of them. Prices too would be near the $550,000 mark but Ferrari being this elusive car-maker expects many of the details to be kept close to its chest. One thing is for sure, the first electric Ferrari will stay true to the brand ethos and that is what we expect.
Kanye West MAYBACH S680
A Shock and Awe in Liquid Silver
KanyeWest and Maybach go a long way back, especially with the chopped-up Maybach from his and Jay-Z’s music video grabbing a lot of eyeballs. This time, his modifications were not as extreme as they were; in-stead, he had his two identical Maybach S680s drenched in liquid silver. Making quite an entrance, the large Maybach S680 with its striking finish was Ye at his best with a shock and awe automotive taste. With these two cars, Ye wanted something to match his creativity and Elite Auto Network decked these two cars with an in-yourface look. The high-gloss colour may not be practical, but for Ye, it is not about the conventional yardsticks. It is not just about the shiny reflective paint finish, as the chrome Monoblock wheels further make the look even more blingy.
He came in one for the Grammys award show with wife Bianca Censori while making quite a statement. The shiny Maibach ’s stopped traffic, and these two cars only took 10 days to finish, including this eye-popping chrome wrap. Looking at these two cars, Kanye West has spent much more than $500K and that is just a small part of his collection since being worth $2 billion has its upsides!
His car collection includes the obligatory Maybachs, SLR Mercedes and a nice Bugatti Veyron 16.4 FBG Par Hermès amongst others. Some of the other rides also include a custom Lamborghini Urus while an ultra-rare SLR Sterling Moss is also one of his coolest cars. However, for sheer luxury, Ye has chosen the Maybach S680 which has a lot of power and is the best that Mercedes-Benz can conjure up while rivalling the likes of Bentley and Rolls Royce. However, amongst the luxury elements and loads of legroom, the S680 has a rocking great powertrain which means here you get a 6.0L V12 biturbo engine that makes 621 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. This means that this land yacht can accelerate like a supercar while giving Ye, the chance to dodge the paparazzi faster!
FERRARI 250 LM
Is the Best of the Best!
|BY FELICITY CARTER
A stunning 1964 Ferrari 250 LM, restored by Ferrari Classiche, has been named winner of the 10th annual The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award 2024.
Presented during an awards ceremony at The Peninsula Paris in February, this distinction recognizes the pinnacle of classic automotive design and engineering. The Ferrari, chosen from a select group of nine vehicles that won awards at the past year’s major concourse events, became eligible for consideration after winning the Best in Show honor at the Cavallino Classic in January 2024.
“I am truly humbled to receive this distinguished award,” said Mr. Chris Cox, owner of the 1964 Ferrari 250 LM. “It brings me tremendous joy to show a vehicle with such a rich history at the world’s biggest concourse, and being selected for The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award is the highest honor a car collector can achieve.”
The 1964 Ferrari 250 LM, chassis number 06053, which was restored by Ferrari Classiche, was originally unveiled in Paris in November 1963, the Ferrari 250 LM (for “Le Mans”) is a Grand Touring version of the mid-engined Ferrari 250 P.
Featuring a body designed by Pininfarina and built by Scaglietti, it was intended to replace the 250 GTO, one of Ferrari’s most successful race cars. Although Ferrari was unable to obtain LM approval in the GT class, the model achieved significant success when a 250 LM won the 1965 Le Mans 24 Hours and the 1965 International Trophy for GT Prototypes. One of only 32 produced, this particular 250 LM enjoyed an accomplished racing career from 1965 to 1967, with notable victories at Brands Hatch, Snetterton, and Silverstone in 1966. The car later participated in two of motorsport’s most iconic endurance races - the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1966 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1968.
Acquired by its current owner in 2018, the 1964 Ferrari 250 LM is a celebrated piece of Ferrari history. It was showcased at the Enzo Ferrari Museum in Modena, Italy, as part of the “Ferrari Forever” 75th anniversary exhibition in 2022; it has also been displayed at major concours, including the 2022 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance – and most recently, at Casa Ferrari at Pebble Beach in 2024 to celebrate Ferrari’s 70th anniversary in the United States.
“The winning 1964 Ferrari 250 LM is much more than just a stunning vehicle,” said Christian Philippsen, co-founder of The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award. “This is one of Ferrari’s most revolutionary models, with a rich competitive history and incredible provenance. We are thrilled to honor a motorsport legend of this caliber as this year’s Best of the Best.”

POROTO CAMBIASO
Richard Mille welcomes a Second Polo Star to its Fold
| BY FELICITY CARTER
In luxury watch news, Richard Mille welcomes Adolfo “Poroto” Cambiaso to its family of partners. Poroto is the seventh member of the Cambiaso family to play this sport and the son of Adolfo Cambiaso Sr., widely regarded as one of the greatest polo players in history. For Richard Mille, which prides itself on supporting up-and-coming talent, the 19-year-old is a welcome addition to its own family of sports-people, and the second polo player to join the Brand alongside its long-standing relationship with Pablo Mac Donough.
He started riding horses early at aged four before picking up a polo mallet a couple of years later. “I like to compete,” explains Poroto, “and to begin with, I played many sports like tennis and football.” But he found he was better at polo. “It was easy to learn. I really love horses and to ride.” Growing up on the family farm, Poroto was soon playing with other kids and simply having a good time. “When I started competing in tournaments there was no pressure,” he explains. “I was a kid and playing for fun and though there was an expectation about what I could do, I didn’t feel it. Then I realized I was doing well, and the pressure started to grow.”
At the age of 14 he won the Royal Windsor Cup in the United Kingdom and received the trophy from Queen Elizabeth II. He is currently the youngest player in history to win the Queen’s Cup, the US Open and the Argentine Open, the most prestigious tournaments in the sport. In 2022 as a member of La Dolfina, the most successful 40-goal handicap team of all time, founded by his father. Poroto then became the youngest player ever to win the Argentine Open and achieve a 10-goal handicap at just 17 years old. In that same
year, he scored 113 goals, making him the top scorer of the Argentine season, which is considered the most competitive in the world. He also received the Fair Play Award and the prestigious Silver Olympia as the best polo player of the year. He is aware of his responsibility to do right by the family name. But though he still plays with his father for La Dolfina and has won the Hurlingham Cup as part of the lineup, he’s currently establishing himself in his own right as polo’s most exciting prospect. “I lead a team in the US and in England and I really enjoy it. I have learned so much from my father, both on and off the field, and I know I still have much to learn,” he says.
“Polo is a very demanding sport, physically really hard. I train, play and go to the gym every day; I practice penalties like a golfer. Polo is all about being able to react fast, in the moment. You have to make quick decisions. The adrenaline is amazing. But to win you also need good equipment. It’s like F1. If you have good horses, you’ll have a good team.”
Poroto’s latest piece of equipment is a RM 67-02 Automatic Extra Flat sports watch, in Quartz TPT® and Carbon TPT® composite and grade 5 titanium; it weighs only 32 grams.
“It’s really light and comfortable; I don’t even feel it. I wear the watch on my left, ungloved hand, which holds the reins,” says Poroto.
Richard Mille continues to strengthen its ties with the world of polo, a universe where passion and precision come together. This partnership represents a collaboration between two forces driven by a shared love of challenges and the desire to push boundaries.

British Jewelry Brand PRAGNELL PARTNER with the King’s Trust: Change a Girl’s Life
| BY FELICITY CARTER
Pragnell is a sixth-generation, British family-run jeweler with a rich and royal heritage, spanning over 170 years. Since 2015 the brand has been a Patron of The King’s Trust and has employed watch workshop technicians as part of the Trust’s apprenticeship scheme and has also pledged a proportion of the proceeds from the sales of the Pragnell Honeycomb collection to support its mission in protecting and promoting heritage craft skills.
Now, Pragnell has announced that a percentage of sales revenue from the new Manhattan Collection pink diamond and classic white diamond Manhattan Collection will be pledged to The King’s Trust ‘Change A Girl’s Life initiative that runs until the end of March.
The new styles introduce fancy light pink diamonds for the first time within the collection. Showcased in signature Manhattan Collection designs, and set in platinum and rose gold, the new pieces consist of rare pink diamonds cue earrings, ring and a pendant. Only one in every thousand diamonds mined possesses a fancy color, with light pink examples being particularly sought after.
The Change A Girl’s Life initiative was founded in 2019 to give young women who are facing adversity the help they need to get back on their feet and into work. Through their ongoing partnership with the King’s Trust Pragnell is committed to supporting these women to build a better future.
The Manhattan collection was inspired by the
iconic art deco shapes and geometric skyline of New York, where Charlie Pragnell spent time whilst training as an apprentice in 2000s. As such, it symbolizes the unique energy, optimism and sense of possibility that the city holds, with the city’s iconic architecture reinterpreted into the collection designs.
As a family-owned business, Pragnell is dedicated to supporting the retention and development of British craftsmanship. Outside of the jewelery industry, Pragnell is proud to apply this same commitment to support and help fund the initiatives of The King’s Trust and the futures of the young women that the campaign will directly support.
INSIDE PRAGNELL MANHATTAN COLLECTION
Handcrafted in Pragnell workshops in Great Britain, the collection is a testament to fine craftsmanship, and intricately creates the panoramic display of gems within a seamless setting. The smooth channel setting of caliber cut gemstones in the collection displays refined, high-precise craftsmanship, as well as fine jewelry flair.
As with Pragnell pieces and its attention to detail, all the diamonds used in this collection have been individually fashioned to highlight the vintage inspiration of the range. Here, the collection offers a selection of cocktail rings, pendants, earrings and a bangle in various metals from platinum ti richly polished 18ct yellow and rose gold. Gemstones featured in the collection include white diamonds, fancy pink diamonds, sapphires, ruby, emerald, auramine and rainbow styles that embody a full rainbow spectrum of natural multi-colored sapphires.
RICHARD MILLE’S RM 16-02 AUTOMATIC EXTRAFLAT
| BY FELICITY CARTER
Automatic Extraflat, Richard Mille unveils a bold artistic direction for the collection’s original rectangular timepiece, the RM 016. This new model boldly reimagines the brand’s signature aesthetic, offering a modern, sleek design that hides an impressive array of technical innovation.
Purity Of Mechanics
At first glance, the watch captivates with its distinctive urban aesthetic, fully embracing an unconventional approach to watch design. It highlights the authenticity of its materials and the elegance of a design free from unnecessary embellishment. Its bold character is inspired by Brutalist architecture, with interwoven forms that create a captivating maze, drawing the eye in. Every detail uncovered invites deeper exploration. Much like a labyrinth, the design plays with optical illusions, evoking the image of a singular, structured path where aimless wandering gives way to focused contemplation. In terms of mechanics, Richard Mille’s expertise is front and center. The Caliber CRMA9, the 15th and most recent addition to the brand’s in-house movement collection, has been specifically designed for the RM 16-02. Crafted by the brand’s movement engineers, this intricate titanium structure is designed to maximize light entry, thanks to the openworked cutouts throughout its components.
Purity of line and efficiency of every component are the watchwords governing this movement. The skeletonized baseplate in micro-blasted grade 5 titanium with a grey electroplasma coating covers the entire visible surface of the watch. Only the minutes bridge stands out, distinguished by its black PVD coating. The extreme skeletonization of the CRMA9 Caliber is impressive, calling as it does for infinite precision in the milling and finishing of its 67 openings of varying sizes, with chamfered edges finishing each cut. Almost 2 hours of milling per plate and dozens of separate manual operations are necessary to complete this meticulous process. Time well spent, as the skilfully orchestrated openings create an impres-
sion of lightness and transparency, while accentuating the interplay of shapes and depth within the movement.
A genuine triumph of engineering, the baseplate further enhances the modern feel of the timepiece while simultaneously revealing the technical complexity at the heart of the creation. The bridges on the back lend its silhouette a rich complexity. Like the baseplate, these parts have undergone rigorous 10year aging and shock-resistance tests to ensure they withstand the rigors of everyday life.
Against the background of the movement, whose full volume is accessible to the eye, emerges the entirely new silhouette for the oscillating weight, fashioned in platinum and fitted with two grade 5 titanium inertia blocks. The rotor is mounted on ceramic ball bearings for efficient winding of the 50-hour power reserve.
Precision Of Lines
A key feature of the RM 16-02 is its distinctive hour markers, which trace a thread-like decal through the skeletonized movement, bringing the hours to life. The carefully crafted indices create a subtle, enigmatic motif, inviting the wearer to connect with the watch in a personal way.
Beyond its technical mastery, the RM 16-02 impresses with its sculptural rectangular shape and 30-meter water resistance. The extra-flat case is 10% smaller than the original RM 016, offering improved ergonomics while maintaining the brand’s signature lines. At 36 x 45.65 mm, it fits the wrist perfectly, blending ease and innovation.
The watch is available in two case options: one in full grade 5 titanium with microblasted satin finishes and polished bevels, and another in a striking Terracotta Quartz TPT® with a new colorway. This unique shade is created by layering silica threads with a colored matrix, then heating and pressing them. The case is complemented by a Creamy White Quartz TPT® caseband, reflecting the brand’s commitment to design that is both refined and unpretentious, echoing the principles of Brutalist architecture.
LOUIS VUITTON’S CHAPTER II OF “AWAKENED HANDS, AWAKENED MIND’S JEWELRY
Unlocking The Mystique
| BY NIKITA VIVEK PAWAR
The2025 collection of Awakened Hands, Awakened Minds is the extension of Chapter I unveiled in 2024, an artistic brainchild of Francesca Amphitheater, Louis Vuitton’s Artistic Director of Jewelry and Watches. Consisting of seven distinct themes and 50 remarkable pieces, this collection celebrates the historical breakthroughs of 19th-century France with a touch of modernity and contemporary creativity. The collection also includes a men’s capsule, which includes a compass, pocket watch, and brooches—an homage to the influential figures who shaped the era’s style and technological evolution. The Awakened Hands, Awakened Minds collection represents a harmonious blend of precious metals, intricate gemstones, and the technical expertise that has long defined Louis Vuitton’s legacy. The Awakened Hands, Awakened Minds collection delves deep into the 19th century, honoring the era’s breakthrough in craftsmanship and mechanization.
Splendeur: A Tribute to Creativity
Among the collection’s most exquisite pieces is Splendeur, a tribute to the ornate craftsmanship celebrated in France’s imperial palaces. The floral motifs inspired by royal furniture are re-imagined through the Maison’s signature Monogram flower, delicately created in a blend of yellow gold, platinum, and Diamonds. The 8.69-carat Mozambique rubies of the pendant are the centerpiece of this breathtaking piece, encircled by dainty openwork designs.
Phenomenal: A Masterpiece of Detail and Geometry
Phenomenal is another showstopper based on France’s heritage of beautiful porcelain and its complex latticework. The necklace’s dramatic geometric shape is characteristic of Louis Vuitton’s iconic use of Diamonds and fine metals. Centered around the 7.44-carat Colombian emerald is interlocked diamond work that
represents the house’s technical excellence and artistic flair. The collection is augmented by a new addition, the men’s capsule, which brings forth a compass bearing a 4.55-carat Tsavorite stone—evidencing the global appeal of the collection and Maison’s steadfast dedication to innovation.
Elegance: A Fresh Expression of Femininity and Geometry
Elegance, a line that transcends femininity and geometry, has a dainty white gold and LV Monogram star-cut Diamond headband. The piece, worn on the forehead, gives a sense of modernity and daintiness, playing with classic motifs while using modern design codes. The open weave and intricate patterns of the reversible bracelet and earrings take the collection’s focus on precise craftsmanship to a higher level as the LV Monogram Star cut Diamonds take the lead. Sophistication merges with elegance and a feeling of movement, building a beautiful language of sight
that captures Louis Vuitton’s vision for high jewellery’s future.
Gravité: The Power of Motion
Introduced by the scientific accuracy of Foucault’s pendulum, Gravité reflects the period’s vision of movement and equilibrium. The collection toys with various Diamond settings and cuts to create a perception of speed and harmony. The stunning 6.48-carat Kashmir Sapphire in the middle of the necklace is counterbalanced by two more Sapphires showcasing the Maison’s capacity to convert the unseen forces of nature into wearable art, with each item radiating precision and elegance.
Dynamisme: A Modern Approach to Interconnectedness
Dynamisme hails the era’s spirit of togetherness and increasing global interconnectedness. Inspired by the revolution of travel—most notably the bicycle and the engine—this collection boasts a dynamic, 3D chevron design that
is all about technical accuracy. Interlocking square-shaped Diamonds and LV Monogram star-cut Diamonds create a visual movement that drives the design forward, representing both the movement of the body and the speed of the era. The robust graphic codes of the collection speak to Louis Vuitton’s skill in seizing the dynamism of contemporary times.
Vision: A Tribute to the Power of Railways and Modernity
The Vision Necklace is a striking remembrance of the mechanization of transportation and the Industrial Revolution. Derived from the delicate railroading of tracks and engineering achievements behind propelling them, the item presents alternating rivets and Diamond baguettes that convey motion and forward progress. At its core, a 50.01-carat Octagonal step-cut yellow Sri Lankan Sapphire shines with sun-like brilliance and power, forcing the eye back towards the necklace’s stunning beauty. The piece, which required more than
2,500 hours to craft, reflects the extraordinary artistry and craftsmanship that underlies Louis Vuitton’s high jewelery philosophy.
Victoire: The Eiffel Tower in Jewelry Form
Victoire is one of the most outstanding pieces in the collection, a tribute to the Eiffel Tower and an exercise in technical daring. The high-collared necklace, with its sophisticated geometric craftsmanship, replicates the architectural genius of the Eiffel Tower. Adorned with 33 Yellow Diamonds and two of the most significant and most exceptional LV Monogram Star cut Diamonds ever produced, Victoire is an eye-catching jewelery piece that commemorates the creativity of the 19th century and Louis Vuitton’s relentless pursuit of perfection.
PAUL COSTELLOE’S 2025 Collection
Irish-American designer Paul Costelloe is widely regarded as one of the most prominent figures in both British and Irish fashion. Since founding his eponymous fashion house, his family-owned business has become known for combining hand-crafted, luxurious fabrics with creativity, and collaborating with renowned manufacturers to produce collections that are celebrated for their exceptional quality.
In 1983, Paul was appointed personal designer to Diana, Princess of Wales, a collaboration that continued throughout her lifetime. As his brand flourished, Paul was invited to showcase his collections at London Fashion Week beginning in 1984, where he continues to present, with his latest collection, Fall 2025, recently unveiled.
Speaking of which, for Fall 2025 the designer brings his heritage brand, Paul Costelloe Dressage, to the London Fashion Week catwalk. Inspired by his lifelong love of equestrian skill, Paul created a collection which reflects strength, volume, space and energy. Think sumptuous fabrics from Magees of Ireland and Harris of Scotland work in harmony with his innate skill to create shapes and structures to the highest expression in design.
Drawing on his painterly expertise, he explored an autumnal palette of chestnut browns, amber yellows, winter creams, berry reds, and midnight blacks. As in previous seasons, prints remain a focal point of his collection. This season, the in-house team designed a narrative print that captures the essence of the modern equestrian world.
Traditional Irish knitwear and wool hosiery added a rich texture to this majestic collection. Dressage, the foundation of all equestrian sport, showcased the harmony and partnership between horse and rider. This season, Paul collaborated with jeweler P.K. Bijoux to create complementary pieces that brought a touch of glamour to the arena.

louis moinet impulsion onyx
Where Artistry meets Precision
| BY NIKITA VIVEK PAWAR
Louis Moinet and Abraham-Louis Breguet are two of the most important names in the world of horology. Breguet invented the tourbillon, and Moinet, the chronograph. Les Ateliers Louis Moinet brings these two complications together inside a watch, generating strong feelings- the Impulsion, which is only 28 pieces. Handmade at the Saint-Blaise workshop, it ticks every box to the ultimate timepiece.
This isn’t the first watch to combine a chronograph and a tourbillon; nevertheless, Implusion Onyx is the very first watch worldwide to show a chronograph mechanism entirely visible from the dial side. The onyx stone is placed behind the flying tourbillon cage and on the wing-shaped bridges of the Impulsion Onyx, complimenting the dark hue of the mainplate. This striking contrast between the mysterious stone and the three-dimensional architecture of the movement elevates the watch into an otherworldly visual experience.
The Impulsion’s standout feature is its in-house Memoris caliber. The single pusher activates the chronograph hand to sweep elegantly over the flying tourbillon. Integrating the two complications in one created the “volte-face” double spring barrel and a 96 hours of power reserve. It bore the name IMPULSION, in an attempt to evoke the very energy that would transfer life to the chronograph and the tourbillon and activate both visual effects to produce a whole show.
The entire movement, comprising 301 meticulously crafted parts, is a testament to Louis Moinet’s legacy of innovation and finesse. The Impulsion case is an engineering marvel. Its 42.5mm titanium core is coated in black and complemented by an 18-carat red gold bezel. The case comprises four distinct elements—two lateral sections, a rear section, and the bezel—allowing the internal mechanisms to be visible through the open-worked design. This not only enhances the visual appeal but also reduces the weight, ensuring comfort.
While the concept can be heard of, the craftsmanship does not disappoint. The case’s polished, satin-finished, and micro-beaded textures create a captivating interplay of light. The case’s bold, sculpted silhouette and hollowed-out lugs enhance its dynamic look, while the single chronograph pusher positioned at 2 o’clock is a signature of Louis Moinet.
The Impulsion Onyx is more than just a timepiece; it is a breathtaking blend of artistry, history, and innovation. From the onyx accents to the intricate movement and sculptural case, This timepiece is more than just a chronograph and tourbillon—it’s an emotional spectacle, a “show” of mechanical mastery.
BREITLING’s
140 Year Journey to Worldwide Icon
| BY NIKITA VIVEK PAWAR
Breitling has long been synonymous with precision, innovation, and timeless style. Founded in 1884 by Léon Breitling, this iconic Swiss watchmaker has been at the forefront of precision timekeeping for 140 years. The luxury Swiss watchmaker is celebrating their 140th anniversary with a touring exhibition showcasing its most iconic timepieces.
Dubbed “Time Capsule: The Breitling Heritage Exhibition,” this traveling showcase is less about selling watches and more about flexing 140 years of innovation. It’s a greatest hits album, but instead of chart-toppers, you’re getting important timepieces that changed the game. “We’ve launched Time Capsule to honor our heritage and celebrate our breakthroughs,” said Breitling’s CEO Georges Kern. “Each exhibition is a captivating journey that connects our heritage with the present, allowing guests to witness the evolution and lasting spirit of our brand.”
With 55 planned stops across North America, Europe, Oceania, and Asia (including the Middle East), the exhibition allows visitors to connect with the past and explore how these pioneering designs have influenced modern Breitling watches. The Breitling Heritage Exhibition is not limited to timepieces—it celebrates the brand’s innovation, legacy, and
philosophy. Whether you’re a seasoned watch enthusiast or new to the world of horology, this exhibition offers an immersive experience that depicts the brand’s journey with some of its most renowned pieces.
Breitling was the brand that brought chronographs to the world. Gaston Breitling’s Mono-Pusher Chronograph with a pushpiece at 2 o’clock was a design that made it easy to start and stop the stopwatch function with a single hand. This became the prelude to a permanent relationship between aviation and Breitling because pilots and engineers embraced the watchmaker’s chronographs for functional use.
The Premier line, introduced in 1943, showcases Breitling’s elegant side. These charming chronographs blend the bygone era with modern innovations, powered by the in-house Caliber 01 movement. The brand’s innovative materials, like titanium and carbon fiber, enhanced its durability. Breitling also introduced a range of elaborate women’s watches crafted from gold and adorned with gemstones. Over the years, the Premier has been reimagined in various materials - gold, steel, and even chrome- but also paved the way for the modern women’s collections that remain popular today.
The brand’s reputation soared with the introduction of the legendary Navitimer in 1952. The iconic pilot’s watch featured a circular slide rule, allowing aviators to perform critical flight calculations right on their wrists. Characterized by bold, instrument-inspired aesthetics, Breitling chronographs feature large, information-rich dials with distinctive elements like tachymeter scales and subdials. To mark its 140th anniversary, Breitling released a special edition of the Navitimer, featuring a sleek steel case with a blue dial and vintage-inspired elements. The first wristwatch to be worn by an astronaut in space, the Breitling Cosmonaute, was designed in 1962 for Scott Carpenter to help him distinguish between day and night in space. One variation of the Navitimer,
this watch had a bigger dial with a 24-hour indication.
Another standout release from Breitling is the Superocean, first introduced in 1957. Built for deep-sea exploration, the Superocean has been a key model in the brand’s catalogue for those seeking adventure and high performance in the water. The watch’s resistance and rotating bezel make it easy for divers to navigate time. A peculiar design speck—the window placed at 6 o’clock tells whether the chronograph is engaged or not. First introduced in 1983, the Chronomat was designed as a versatile watch for athletes and adventure enthusiasts. It offers a robust, functional design with a timeless appeal. Breitling has recently unveiled a refreshed Chronomat with an updated bracelet design and new colorways, proving it’s still relevant in the current landscape of luxury sports watches. Breitling has also displayed The Emergency, introduced in 1995, the world’s first watch to contain a miniature international distress beacon.
The Swiss luxury watchmaker’s recent times have been occupied with the first exclusive, perpetual calendar chronograph movement. The Caliber B19 began its journey in 2009, and continued with a progression of chronograph caliber: the B02 with 24-hour function, the B03 with split-seconds, and the B04 with GMT. The latest Caliber B19’s solid-gold rotor is decorated with an engraving of Breitling’s historic Montbrillant Manufactory at 3 rue de Montbrillant in La Chauxde-Fonds, Switzerland. This movement is now seen in the anniversary special Premier B19 Datora 42, Navitimer B19 Chronograph 43 Perpetual Calendar, and Super Chronomat B19 44 Perpetual Calendar.
Whether you marvel at the first chronograph from 1915, the Navitimer that became the aviator’s tool, or the revolutionary Emergency from 1995, each piece tells a story of a pioneering spirit and technical brilliance.
Le Grand Mazarin
Launches its Latest “Artist in Residence” Leona Rose and the Matryoshka Dolls
| BY FELICITY CARTER
As part of its ‘Artist in Residence’ window takeover programme, aimed at promoting the Parisian art scene, Le Grand Mazarin has announced its latest collaboration with the artist-painter Leona Rose. The young contemporary artist-painter, who hails from the South of France and loved for her flamboyant, colourful artwork is presenting an immersive exhibition to be discovered in the hotel’s windows, visible from Rue de la Verrerie. Running until April, passers-by in Le Marais will be able to journey into the world of Matryoshka dolls.
Leona Rose’s exhibition reinterprets the famous Russian Matryoshka dolls as a metaphor for the different facets that make up human beings. Each doll, nested within another, symbolises the successive layers of identity, life stages, and inner revelations. At the heart of this reflection, the artist draws inspiration from mythical references, including the two-headed serpent, and embodies themes of duality, inner conflict, and the balance between opposing forces.
Through Leona’s artwork she presents the coexistence of paradoxes: the past and the future, light and shadow, and the struggle between reason and intuition. She also refers to constant transformation and the ability to navigate multiple paths. The artist illustrates the inner journey, with feet firmly planted on the earth and the head turned toward the cosmos, inviting deep introspection. Through this exploration, Leona encourages embracing one’s full potential, aligning with the universe, and revealing the multidimensional richness of human identity. This unique collaboration with Le Grand Mazarin, celebrates an artist full of color, reflecting the hotel’s own flamboyant décor designed by Martin Brudnizki.
About the ‘Artist In Residence’ Window Takeover:
Each quarter, Le Grand Mazarin opens the doors to its fantastic universe to both emerging and established creators. Inspired by the artistic vision of this Parisian hotel, the project invites the public to escape into a world where every corner and detail tells a new and marvellous story. The ‘Artist In Residence’ programme was born from the hotel’s welcoming of various artists since its opening. Seeking to make this initiative more regular, Le Grand Mazarin created this project to showcase and support the emerging art scene in France.

Parfums De Marly Debuts New Fragrance VALAYA EXCLUSIF
| BY FELICITY CARTER
Extremely refined yet freed from convention, a royal residence intended solely for a private inner circle, the Château de Marly is an exception in French history. A setting dedicated to pleasure and celebration; it was the most avant-garde facet of 18th-century French art de vivre and 300 years later, Julien Sprecher draws inspiration from the Château to create his own Maison of Haute Parfumerie. Offering excellence, audacity and unbridled creativity, along with a unique olfactory approach, expect noble raw materials and exceptional flacons, as each essence exults self-expression. Adding to the line is the launch of the new Valaya Exclusif fragrance that draws influence from the min-
imalist, masterful silhouette that became the hallmark of court dress in the late 18th century; remaining true to the Maison, the scent celebrates French allure with a fresh, sensual notes of valaya combined with almond, vanilla, and for some zing there’s orange blossom and bergamot.
Here, every note reflects the savoir-faire of the brand, and Julien Sprecher, says, “The ultimate expression of true elegance, a balanced luxury that is woven into every detail. Thanks to the purity of white flowers enhanced by enveloping almond and powdery notes, this new interpretation reveals spellbinding sensuality and great intensity the instant it touches the skin.”
ADAM KOBER from Kober Design Group
Thinking on a Grand Scale
Channeling his creative inclinations into a practical career, Adam Kober is a celebrated landscape architect. He spoke exclusively with Upscale Living magazine about his dedication to his trade and why landscape architecture is much more intricate than it sounds.
Adam, did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path?
From my earliest memories, I loved to draw. That passion didn’t crystallize into a career trajectory until midway through my freshman year as an undergraduate at Purdue; I knew I wanted to pursue the creative arts but feared becoming a ‘starving artist’. I stumbled across Purdue’s highly regarded landscape architecture program and knew that it was the perfect avenue to channel my creative inclinations into a practical career.
| BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS PHOTOS COURTESY OF KOBER DESIGN GROUP
When and why did you start your firm, Kober Design Group?
After being a Principal and Lead Designer for 16 years at another well-known landscape architecture firm, I decided to venture out on my own in September of 2021. It was the logical next step in my career, as I wanted more control over the way I evolved as a designer and the types of projects I take on.
What does being a landscape architect entail? Anything outside the face of the building
can fall within the scope of our projects. Some people assume that we deal strictly in plants; this couldn’t be further from the truth. Landscape architecture takes a holistic approach when designing a space - this means that we’re involved in driveway and sidewalk layout, fountain and pool design, pottery selection, lighting, and sculpture. Naturally, planting remains a key element of any outdoor space and provides the final touch on an installation. The creative use of live organic material is the unique aspect of this field that
sets us apart from other designers.
I assume it’s a rather nice market. I won’t deny that this profession affords me the opportunity to enjoy some rather opulent environments; it’s one of the benefits of our market alignment in the upper segments of work that’s being performed today.
You have quickly positioned your firm as a leader in diverse markets, earning acclaim for projects that captivate and engage. How
easy/difficult was that?
Because of the scope and caliber of projects I was able to work on at my previous firm, I gained experience that allowed me to jump in immediately with prestigious, large-scale opportunities through KDG. I’ve had several previous clients follow me to the new firm. Of the new clients that we have gained over the past few years, almost all have become repeats –now having us work on more than one project at a time.
How do you go about redefining landscapes through exceptional hospitality spaces, multi-use entertainment venues, and striking residential designs. By necessity, we start with client goals and general functionality. But great design will be informed by reactions of the clients, residents, and customers who patronize a specific type of venue. Maneuverability and safety is of utmost importance. We also strive to invoke a sense of discovery as one meanders through an exterior space; allowing observers to happen
upon something that wasn’t obvious upon arrival helps to maintain interest. Gardens are meant to be a place of rest, rejuvenation, inspiration, and an opportunity to slow down. By creating a space that triggers the natural instinct to wander instead of simply traversing, we’ve already given a small gift to the guest. Landscapes should be restorative, endlessly fascinating, and even playful. The study of human behavior plays a foundational role in the ways that we craft spaces.
Your dedication is shown in every step of the process, including the hand-selection of fully mature trees, often sourced and transplanted from hundreds of miles away. Please talk us through that intricate process. We are deeply involved not only in the creative process, but in every detail of our deliverables. KDG’s landscape construction document packages are some of the most detailed in the industry; this is required in order to execute elaborate designs of the scope that we are used to. While some might view this as micromanaging, we feel it’s our basic responsibility to our clients and their investment. In order to be able to deliver the very best, we never want to feel constrained strictly to local material sources. We often hand-select stone, tile, carved fountains, and outdoor art and have them imported from the best craftspeople around the world. The same is true for organic matter and plant material. We want the optimal option for a specific design - so if the best mature tree for a particular spot happens to be on the other side of the country, we put it on a truck and move it. Very rarely is there a ‘no-go’. Our clients want the best, and we make every effort to accommodate.
How rewarding is your work?
I love what I do. While I have a particular fondness for working in the high-end residential market because of the elevated finishes and details that clients require for their personal spaces, I glean a tremendous amount of personal enjoyment watching guests experiencing the hospitality and commercial spaces that we create. Our commercial work has the ability to bring enjoyment to millions of visitors every year and I love having a hand in providing that for many. That’s the best part of working in design for the public.
You have worked on iconic properties in Las Vegas, Fort Worth, New York, and China. Please share some highlights of these projects.
Working in Las Vegas and China challenged me early in my career to be fearless, and to think on a grander scale than the average design scope. People go to Las Vegas to be dazzled and to let loose; everything is designed with that in mind. The scale of the hotels is huge, so exterior spaces have to match. The expectation is very similar in China, where there are generally no budgets on the projects we take on; if I can think it up, they’ll build it. I am also grateful for the legacy projects and historic landmarks we’ve been fortunate enough to advise on in the U.S., such as Rockefeller Center in New York and the Fort Worth Stockyards in Texas. Being trusted to safeguard and advance the legacies of these storied landmarks of Americana is a responsibility that we are grateful for and take quite seriously.
How has sustainability influenced your projects?
As the focus continues to grow on ways that we can leave a healthy planet for the generations after us, we seek ways to incorporate healthy environmental stewardship into our designs. Natural materials and plants with lower water usage are always front of mind for us; that said, we don’t let sustainability fully dictate design. First and foremost, the needs of the client will drive the details. Our collaborative process helps to inform the ways that we
can accomplish their goals while keeping sustainability as a top priority.
How do you create something lasting?
We strive to create spaces that are timeless. We are slower to adopt trendy or ‘of the moment’ elements into our designs, as we never want an environment to look like it came from a certain decade or time period. A trend can be one of the surest ways to put an expiration date on a design. However, through the use of fully mature trees, dense shrub spacing, and classic hardscape materials, most of our designs look like they’ve been in place for decadeseven if they were newly constructed. This design philosophy helps our creations stand the test of time.
Exciting projects on the horizon?
We have many new exciting projects on the boards. We continue to work heavily in the hospitality, commercial, retail, and entertainment markets as well as designing landscapes for some of the premier residential properties in the US – many of which will have values exceeding $100 million once completed.

Georges Vuitton (son of Louis Vuitton) first introduced automotive trunks in 1897. One hundred twenty-five years later, the brand has maintained a strong connection with sports, automobiles and races.
The Formula 1® Trophy Trunks are being assembled at the historical atelier in Asnières -where Georges Vuitton (son of Louis Vuitton) produced some of the first auto trucks. Along with the iconic monogram design, the trunks will feature the iconic “ V” in a unique local color scheme against the classic brown background for each race.

This is a partnership between two global icons linked first and foremost by their great passion for innovation, excellence and creativity, which makes them two exceptional timeless stories. RED HOT KITCHEN TRENDS
| BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS
The 2025 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study found that homeowners are appropriating space from other rooms in their home to make kitchens bigger. In fact, more than a third of renovating homeowners increase the square footage of their kitchens, sacrificing nearby spaces, such as dining rooms and living rooms. While transitional style continues to hold a commanding lead in the kitchen and white reigns for kitchen walls, backsplash tile and countertops, some homeowners choose to bring a pop of color into those features with blues, greens, and even black. Upscale Living magazine decided to try a variety of red shades in both furnishing and fixtures – who knew an oven could look so chic, and even the light fitting gives your space an aura of class!

AT HOME WITH LEIGH JENDRUSINA
Sharing her home in Carlsbad with her husband and their two sons, interior designer Leigh Jendrusina shows us her gorgeous laid-back California house.
Leigh, please tell us a bit about yourself.
I launched SALTHOUSE collective, a boutique interior design studio, in late 2019. It’s been so much fun growing a business that I’m so passionate about and I love being able to work in a creative field and help clients really be able to enjoy their homes.
I live with my husband and two elementary-aged sons in my hometown of Carlsbad, CA. I’m super outdoorsy/ sporty/beachy. I’m constantly bouncing from kid sports to beachside hangs to checking out the latest restaurants and shops in coastal San Diego. I have a lot of energy and love to be out and about soaking up everything North County has to offer.
The laid-back lifestyle of a beach town
| BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHARLOTTE LEA
(Carlsbad) really influenced my growing up as I spent many childhood days hanging in and around the ocean. We really wanted to raise our boys in the beach-town lifestyle and Carlsbad has been such a wonderful community as an adult with kids now. There’s definitely a lot more in the way of food and shops in Carlsbad than when I grew up here, but I love that I’m doing the same types of beach things with my husband and boys as I did when I was a kid. We spend many a weekend hanging at the beach all day, then grabbing burritos or food to grill on the way home, ending the day with an afternoon in the jacuzzi and enjoying the sunset by our fire pit.
Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path?
Not from an interiors standpoint, but I’ve always loves fashion and shopping and devoured magazines as a teenager. I worked in brand marketing and brand packaging design in the corporate world for about 10 years which helped me really learn a lot about working in creative. After taking on a full home gut-renovation, I had the naive
confidence to do this for a job and the rest is history - with a ton of imposter syndrome in between!
Please tell us more about your home. I live in Carlsbad, CA, it’s in the area referred to as Olde Carlsbad. It’s a single story home with a detached ADU. It’s a 1960s ranch style home that we pretty much gutted (except for the great room beams and wall of French doors) and re-worked to fit a little better for our family. We bought out home in 2018 and remodeled in two phases, finishing everything by the summer of 2020.
You have your own interior design & styling firm SALTHOUSE collective. Did you opt to do your home’s own interior design?
Yes! That’s how SALTHOUSE collective began. I had quit my corporate job after having my second son and we were living in Seattle, WA at the time. About a year and a half into my stay-at-home life, my husband’s job moved us back to my hometown of Carlsbad where we bought out home in 2018. I was getting antsy to do something creative again,
but in a part-time capacity since our kids were little. I decided to do my home’s full interior and exterior design with my contractor and from there slowly told people I was going to do this as a ‘business’ and it kind of took off from there. I started with small projects - a friend’s bathroom here and a friend’s living room there. Then it just got bigger and bigger. Now I’m doing full home remodels and new builds. It’s wild, and I’m just loving the ride!
How would you best describe your design style?
I’d say it’s a blend. I love to marry modern clean lines with layered textures (think: rattans and woven materials) with a bit of eclectic-ness (I love a good patterned rug or tile) - but all in a laid-back California, light and bright kind of way.
Where / what / who inspires your design style?
We live in an almost always sunny beach town, so I like my designs to reflect the environment that we live in. I love a light and bright aesthetic because it’s happy and matches that beach-town vibe.
I’m really drawn to Scandinavian architectural design as well as a lot of the more modern brutalist designs from Mexico. I love how in both of these styles there is a minimalist approach, but then a layer of texture or warmth that comes through.
How do you keep things fresh and new in terms of decorating?
In my own home I’m constantly editing layers. I keep the bones (the construction-related things) mostly the same, but I’ll switch out a rug or a chair or a pillow or accessory here and there to keep things looking fresh and interesting. I think as you edit your home, it adds a layer of depth and gives you that livedin, eclectic kind of look.
Is there a specific color you are drawn to in interior design?
I love me some black! Ha! I don’t personally love color; I’m more of a pattern kind of person in neutrals and textures. BUT, because of where we live, my clients love blues and greens. They’re sort of a neutral as well. If I had to pick a favorite non-black color, it would probably be a terracotta.
Do you believe in repurposing?
Yes, definitely! I try not to “get rid of”
everything in a client’s space. I like to save things if we can or reupholster items or use heirlooms. I think you can have a fresh “new” space and layer in something old or repurposed and it gives the space some depth.
Do you have any special heirloom pieces? I have a couple of my grandmother’s colors glass vases sprinkled into my great room. I love the funk they bring in. I’m also actively collecting handmade ceramics from different makers because I love the uniqueness they bring into my home.
Which part of your home is you favorite?
I love my great room - my tiled fireplace with the funky chairs make me happy every time I walk into the room. We really use that space HARD with all the family and friends hanging there. I also love my bedroom and bathroom; I wove in some fun tile in my shower and it’s always a happy moment walking in there. Lastly, my backyard is so fun for entertaining during all the seasons.
In which part of your home do you spend the most time?
Great room! I love a good cup of coffee or glass of wine by my fireplace!
May I please ask who you share your home with? As an expert in your field, were / are you open to design suggestions from them, especially your child(ren)?
I live with my husband and our 2 boys - 8 yrs old and 10 yrs old. My husband was involved in some of the big decisions with our house, but didn’t really have strong opinions about the actual design. I would give him two options or tell him the plan and he had veto-ability, but he wasn’t overly involved in picking tiles or paint colors. When we remodeled our kids were really little, so they had no actual involvement. But when the house was torn down to the studs in the bedroom areas, we let them draw and color on all the framing (pre-drywall), so if it ever gets torn out again, people would see all kinds of 3 and 5 year old drawings.
Do you have any designers that inspire you? Lots! KLH Custom Homes, RAILICA Design, Sarah Sherman Samuel, Tali Roth. I love how they mix textures and finishes to have a bit more of an eclectic-cool vibe in their spaces they design.

Diongre. Modernism enthusiasts can also look forward to some hidden gems, such as the Marit, Grégoire-Lagasse, and Anciaux houses, the Woluwe-Saint-Lambert town hall, the former Freemasons’ lodge of Le Droit Humain, the former Postcheque office. Art Deco was inspired by industrialization. The earlier Art Nouveau movement by nature. Art Deco is rigid and geometric while Art Nouveau uses flowy, organic lines. Both movements came about during rapidly changing times, when new technologies were emerging and accepted values were being questioned. If Art Nouveau reacted against industrialization, Art Deco embraced it. It’s visual rhythms reference automobiles, streamlined trains, ocean liners, and airplanes. Art Deco is all about sleek, streamlined forms, angular and symmetric using high-contrast colors and luxurious materials like chrome, glass, glossy wood veneers and lacquer. Popular motifs include sunbursts, fountains, sphinxes and chevrons. It was an expression of the “Roaring Twenties” and the “Jazz Age”. It represented luxury, glamour, exuberance and faith in social and technological progress. The movement featured rare and expensive materials. Art Deco carried the
design torch for over two decades, giving way to Art Moderne and International Style.
This year’s BANAND festival in March celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Art Décor movement which got its name after the 1925 Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes (International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts) held in Paris. Art Deco has its origins in bold geometric forms of the Vienna Secession and Cubism, influenced by the bright colors of Fauvism, the Ballets Russes and the exotic styles of Chinese, Japanese, Persian, Indian, ancient Mayan and Egyptian art.
Art Deco is not all Miami, the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building. From the Villa Empain with its marble and wood hall to the domes of the Koekelberg Basilica (the largest Art Deco building in the world the ocean liner Flagey broadcasting building, Brussels has plenty of Art Deco grandeur.
As well as Art Nouveau.
In 1893, architect Victor Horta (1861-1947) built the haute-bourgeois Tassel House, the founding work of the Art Nouveau movement. Characterized by wroughtiron balconies, its diffusion of light through its glass roof, large bow
window, light wells and stained glass, Horta, who had worked on the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken, designed everything. Down to the mosaic flooring, door handles and even doorbell. Solvay House is regarded as one of Victor Horta’s finest works. Commissioned by industrialist and philanthropist Ernest Solvay on the Avenue Louise, no expense was spared with the use of marble, onyx, bronze and tropical woods. The pointillist painter, Theo van Rysselberghe, decorated the staircase.
The first town house in Brussels built by Horta was Autrique House.. Hora also designed a fabric store, the Magasins Waucquez (1905), which is now the Belgian Comic Strip Center. The Horta Museum in the commune of Saint-Gilles is housed in the architect’s house and his workshop. Built in 1903, Horta’s Max Hallet House, on the prestigious and chic avenue Louise, was the home and office of a lawyer. Foundation Frison Horta on the Rue Lebeau was built by Horta in 1894 for another lawyer. Politician and administrator of Congo Free State, Edmond van Eetvelde commissioned his steel and glass 1895 house. Its central reception area is covered by a stained glass cupola and filigree dome. The rotunda served as a living room or Winter Garden. The dining room door has opalescent tinted glass.
Joef Hoffmann’s Stoclet Palace, built for a banker and art collector, is assembled from marble cubes, mounting to a tower. Another Art Nouveau designer Paul Hankar, the son of a master stone cutter, designed his own residence, at 71, rue Defacqz/Defacqzstraat.
It was Hort who, in 1919, laid the foundations of Art Deco in Brussels with his plans for the Centre for Fine Arts (Bozar).
Michel Polak had already created several Art Deco masterpieces before Baron Empain commissioned him. In the 1920s, he designed the first luxury apartment building in Brussels: the Résidence Palace, located on Rue de la Loi. It was the largest apartment complex in Europe. The various buildings have been partially restored, renovated, and expanded with the magnificent European Council building. The back of the building houses the International Press Center. You can dine at the restaurant there. Polak also built the Eastman Dental Institute, now home to the House of European History.
The home of Brussels patrons David and Alice Van Buuren is a perfect example of the Amsterdam School. Asymmetrical facades, decorative brickwork with handmade red bricks, stained glass and ladder-style windows, and sloping roofs. The gardens designed in the 1920s by Jules Buyssens in the Art Deco style. Brussels native Victor Bourgeois developed a more radical form of architecture that shared attention with Art Deco: an even more streamlined modernism. He designed Berchem-Sainte-Agathe’s Cité Moderne garden city and social housing complex in a cubist style. In 1930, Adrien Blomme constructed the new brewhouse and grain silos of the former Wielemans-Ceup-
pens Brewery (now the Wiels Art Centre) in this style. Architecture had to become more functional to reduce labour costs.
Now in its 9th year, the BANAD Festival, organized by Explore Brussels, is a unique opportunity to visit places that are usually not accessible to the public and discover the city through the lens of architecture and its iconic styles. And realize how similar Brussels is to Miami!

LTA INTERIORS
Passionate about the Transformative Process of Breathing New Life into Interior Spaces
| BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS PROJECT IMAGES BY LIVING PROOF PHOTOGRAPHY
Influenced by their mothers’ fashionable styles, Lynn Berney, Tracy Gould and Alexa Evans formed LTA Interiors in 2023. They spoke exclusively with Upscale Living magazine about what it entails to run a luxury, full-service interior design firm, and showcase their stunning Boca Raton project.
Lynn, Tracy & Alexa, tell us a bit about yourselves.
Lynn Berney: I grew up in Philadelphia. After pursuing a career in journalism at both NYU for undergrad and Georgia State for her graduate studies, I found myself being given the opportunity to write many articles about interior design. My first job was with Atlanta Magazine where I learned a wealth of information about the design business and became hooked. Fast forward to about 13 years ago, my sister Tracy Gould and I launched our first company LT Design Studios. In 2023, we joined forces with Alexa Rae Interiors and opened LTA Interiors. My husband and I reside in New York City with our four children and dog. Tracy Gould: I also grew up in Philadelphia and attended NYU for college. Later, I pursued my studies at NY Law School and then expanded my education by attending the New York School of Interior Design. I began her career in design working with renowned designers at Robert A.M. Stern and John Saladino. I reside in Boca Raton, FL with my husband, two children and
three dogs. Alexa Evans: I was raised in South Florida. I attended University of Florida for both my undergraduate degree and for law school. Upon graduation, I worked as a litigation attorney. However, my passion for design and love for artistry propelled me to engage in a pivotal career change. I started my own interior design firm. It was this work that solidified my dedication to the industry. I later joined two other talented interior designers and formed LTA Interiors. Today, I reside in Boca Raton, Florida with my husband, three young children, and three dogs.
Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path?
Surprisingly all three of us were influenced by our mothers’ fashionable styles and obsessions with interior design. Growing up, we lived in homes where our houses were filled with pieces of art, carefully curated furniture, and color schemes that seemed to bring everything together perfectly. Our mothers had an innate ability to transform any space, making it feel
both welcoming and sophisticated. It wasn’t long after that we each adopted our own flair for design.
When and why did you establish LTA Interiors?
We established our interior design firm because we are each passionate about this industry and the transformative power it holds. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about taking a space and completely reimagining it, breathing new life into it while making it feel personal, functional, and beautiful. The ability to enhance not just the aesthetics but the experience of a home is what drew us in from the beginning. Starting our own firm wasn’t just about pursuing a career—it was about turning a shared passion into a way of helping people reimagine their homes.
What does it entail to run a luxury, full-service interior design firm?
Running a luxury, full-service interior design firm involves managing a wide range of responsibilities, each focused on delivering high-end, personalized design experiences for clients. I think
the foundation of any successful luxury design firm is building strong relationships with clients. This involves understanding their needs, lifestyle, and aesthetic preferences while also managing their expectations. Another large aspect of our job involves creating custom design concepts that reflect the client’s vision. As a full-service firm, project management is also crucial. This includes overseeing all stages of the project—concept, design, procurement, installation, and final styling. Lastly, while luxury clients expect top-notch design and service, managing their budgets is a crucial element.
You specialize in high-end residential and commercial projects. Have there been highlights?
Our company has experienced numerous highlights over the years. One recent standout was the opportunity to create a truly unique space by combining several apartments in one of New York City’s most prestigious new buildings. In South Florida, we’ve had the privilege of designing several new homes, each tailored to meet the diverse needs of different families, allowing us to bring their individual visions to life.
Your work takes you across Florida and NYC, with an emphasis on curated contemporary spaces that reflect the distinct style of your clients. How hands-on are you with your clients?
We are very hands-on with our clients, ensuring that every step of the design process is a collaborative effort. From the initial consultation to the final touches, we take great pride in being actively involved, working closely with our clients to understand their vision and needs. We believe in creating spaces that truly reflect their personalities and lifestyles, so we invest time in getting to know them on a personal level. This hands-on approach allows us to guide them through each decision, from selecting materials to curating custom pieces, while making sure that every detail aligns with their expectations. We are committed to being present and accessible throughout the entire project, ensuring a seamless experience and a result that feels authentic to them. Our involvement doesn’t end with design; we stay engaged during implementation, overseeing the work to ensure the final outcome is exactly as envisioned.
How do you go about creating luxury yet functional living?
Creating luxury yet functional living spaces involves balancing high-end aesthetics with
practicality. The key is to design spaces that not only look beautiful but also serve the needs of the people who live in them. We begin by understanding the lifestyle and preferences of our clients—what they value in a home, how they use their space, and any specific requirements they might have. This insight helps us create a layout that maximizes both flow and function, ensuring that each room is optimized for daily living.
Tell us about the stunning Boca Raton property we are highlighting.
This project was truly a “wow” moment. The open space we had to work with was incredible, giving us the freedom to design without limitations. Our client was looking for a perfect balance of elegance and functionality, and we were excited to meet that challenge. She had a clear vision, mixing exclusive, high-end brands with more affordable ones to create a space that felt both luxurious and accessible. Her preference for monotone color schemes played a major role in shaping the design, with a strong emphasis on incorporating as much white as possible into the home. This choice not only brought a sense of purity and brightness to the space but also allowed us to experiment with different textures, layering elements to create depth and interest. The result was a stunning, timeless design that was both practical and sophisticated, offering an inviting yet refined atmosphere. Every detail, from custom furniture to subtle accent pieces, was chosen to enhance the elegance of the home while ensuring it remained livable and comfortable.
How long did the project take from concept to completion?
The project took about two years to complete.
Were there challenges?
The two biggest challenges we faced were creating distinct, separate spaces that still felt cohesive and ensuring that the white color scheme was durable enough to withstand the wear and tear from young kids and pets.
Are you happy with the outcome?
We are incredibly proud of our work and even more thrilled that our client is very happy with her new home
Exciting projects on the horizon?
We have a number of exciting new projects on the horizon. In New York, we’re working on several phenomenal Hamptons projects, where we’re integrating the natural surroundings into
our designs to create truly stunning results. We’re also collaborating with a high-profile business leader on the Upper East Side, who has impeccable taste, to create a beautifully curated mid-century modern space. In South Florida, we’re engaged in several projects within highly exclusive communities, designing expansive homes that bring warmth and beauty to large, open floor plans. Additionally, we’re partnering with a young celebrity influencer who has a unique, bold style, pushing our design boundaries in exciting new directions. The range of these projects has us incredibly inspired, and we can’t wait to share the finished results.

Food & Beverage Manager of the Great Northern Hotel, a Timeless Luxury in the Heart of King’s Cross
Located in King’s Cross St Pancras, the Great Northern Hotel is a historic boutique hotel that seamlessly blends 19th-century charm with modern sophistication. Originally opened in 1854, it is one of London’s first railway hotels, meticulously restored to channel contemporary luxury.
Offering stylish rooms, exceptional service, and a rich heritage, the Great Northern Hotel is a timeless retreat for discerning travelers, and what’s more, guests and visitors alike, can enjoy refined dining at Rails Restaurant & Little Bar, that’s known for its elegant yet relaxed atmosphere.
Leading the way is Diogo Felicio, the Food and Beverage Manager, who shares his expertise on the hotel and its vibrant dining scene.
What is the USP of the Great Northern Hotel and RAILS Restaurant?
As we’re just across the road from the Eurostarand are so well connected to the rest of the UK via King’s Cross and St Pancras stations - we offer the very best of British ingredients but with a dash of French flair, refinement and flavor.
You’ve recently celebrated the 170th anniversary, how did you mark the occasion?
We had a number of activities throughout the year to celebrate as well as sharing fun facts and stories of our history on our website and social media. Some highlights included a special anniversary cocktail, a commemorative Afternoon Tea in partnership with Grasmere Gingerbread
| BY FELICITY CARTER
(also celebrating their 170th anniversary) and a big party to thank all of our suppliers and partners for their support over the years. How would you define the guest experience? King’s Cross has changed a lot over the years and it’s now a thriving hub for commuters, locals and visitors alike. We offer guests a cosseting and tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle with friendly and attentive service. Our menu offers the perfect blend of Modern British Classics with a French influence.
Who is your target market/who do you cater for?
It’s very diverse to be honest. On the one hand we see a lot of people joining us for business lunches and meetings, but we also get commuters stopping for a morning coffee and pastry, friends catching up over a cocktail and families enjoying afternoon tea on the weekend.
What’s your day-to-day role?
I’m the Food and Beverage Manager at Great Northern Hotel. In addition to RAILS, we also have GNH Bar and Terrace which I oversee. I also work closely with our Head Chef, Mark Weir, to collaborate on menus, plan seasonal changes and organize tastings for the teams. It’s a very varied role which sees me working with all the different teams across the hotel - from Marketing to Operations which keeps every day fresh and exciting!
Tell us about the menu, and what’s at the heart of the food offering?
We change menus on a regular basis to make the most of the best seasonal ingredients across the
British Isles. That said, we have some signature dishes which you’ll always find available - like our Chicken Cordon Bleu and our Beef Wellington which are always very popular. One of the standouts for me from our current a la carte is the Seared Coley with buttered leeks, roasted purple cauliflower and clam velouté. It’s such a fantastically colorful dish and all the ingredients complement each other wonderfully.
You’ve just launched a new set menu, what does that consist of?
Our new set menu is available from 12-6pm and includes a choice of three different mains, starters and desserts for guests to choose from. My personal favorite is the Navarin of Lamb - while we’re still waiting for Spring and warmer days, it’s like a hug in a bowl, with tender pieces of lamb, a rich gravy and packed full of Autumnal vegetables.
Any career highlights while being at GNH? It’s going to sound clichéd, but the main highlight has to be all the amazing people I’ve worked with since I joined GNH. We have a lot of fun doing what we do, and for me that’s what makes my job so enjoyable and why I’ve now been at GNH for 8 years!
What can you recommend in the local vicinity?
Coal Drops Yard is a must visit if you’re in the King’s Cross area, there’s a host of boutique shops, great cafes and dining options. There are also regular activities organized by the King’s Cross Team, such as the recent Slomo Sauna experience or Club Curling.
Location
Perfectly positioned in the heart of King’s Cross, the Great Northern Hotel offers easy access to London’s transport hubs, including St Pancras International and King’s Cross Station just a stone’s throw away.

The stylish Danish capital boasts many great hotels but Hotel d’Angleterre is considered the grande dame of them all. A former neoclassical palace with an esteemed pedigree, the d’Angleterre attracts guests ranging from royalty to actors, musicians to writers - Hans Christian Anderson stayed here often and has a suite named after him. For those looking for luxury and privacy d’Angleterre, as it is affectionately known, is The destination to head to on arrival into the city. The property has a celebrated Michelin-starred
restaurant Marchal serving delicious French-Scandinavian dishes, an exclusive Balthazar Champagne Bar and a serenely relaxing spa.
The d’Angleterre stands on Kongens Nytorv Square in the beating heart of historical Copenhagen. She stands opposite Charlottenborg Palace, the Royal Theatre and Nyhavn. The famous shopping street of Strøget and the luxury department stores Illum and Magasin du Nord are a few minutes walk away. Amalienborg Palace, home to the Danish Royal Family, is nearby. The metro stop just on the square can whisk you directly to and from Kastrup international airport in under 30 minutes.
A love story
D’Angleterre’s story began back in 1755, when a young French servant named Jean Marchal fell in love with the daughter of the Danish Royal Palace’s chef, Marie Coppy. The couple married and opened a gourmet restaurant on the site of the hotel that became a favorite of the aristocracy and later rebuilt as a hotel. Renovated extensively in 2013, the hotel has 92 exquisite rooms and suites, including the magnificent Royal Suite.
At Christmas time, thousands gather to watch the Christmas lights decorating the hotel’s famous white facade being switched on. We arrived the day after the lighting and entered the surprisingly intimate lobby and adjacent lounge area which were extravagantly decked out with beautifully designed festive decorations that transformed the space into a fairytale wonderland. Outside in the cold, Kongens Nytorv was buzzing with yuletide life and light - the skating rink open in the square was a hive of joyful activity. Christmas in Køben.
The check in was friendly and swift, the formality relaxed by the twist of a visually arresting original Andy Warhol portrait of Denmark’s very own Queen Margrethe II smiling down from at us from above the reception desk - d’Angleterre has an impressive art collection.
The grand staircase off the lobby is one of the centerpieces of the hotel with. The interior atmosphere and sense of space is set by ornate chandeliers, columns and muted colors. The spectacular ballroom is a popular location for weddings and has a rich history. It hosted legendary Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen on his return from the first ever South Pole
expedition in 1912.
The superior suite was impressively large and tastefully furnished. It was divided into three parts: A well appointed lounge area with a sofa, widescreen 40 inch Bang & Olufsen television, a well- stocked minibar and a Nespresso coffee machine. In between was the large marble bathroom that featured a deep bath and walkin shower. High-end Danish brand Amazing Space provided the bathroom products. The bedroom centered around a very comfortable king size bed. The slippers and bath robes were delightfully soft and cozy. Each room in d’Angleterre is distinct and have their own singular touches from balconies and fireplaces to original art.
Marchal restaurant
Michelin starred restaurant Marchal is run by the affable and talented executive chef Alexan-
der Baert, who brings his French élan to Nordic cuisine. We had a delicious lunch that was a highlight of our visit. The starters of canapés of lobster, yuzu and dill and thenfoie gras on brioche toast with port wine were spectacular. The presentation of each dish was an artistic delight.
We shared two main courses from the festive á la carte menu. The canette duck breast with beets, quince and duck sauce with Christmas spices was mouthwatering sublime while the danish turbot with celeriac, blue mussels and champagne sauce was a warming, rich winter treat. We matched both dishes with the tasty Marchal signature vegetable salad. Marchal also serves Rossini beluga caviar served with blinis, herb créme fraîche and quail eggs. As would be expected Marchal has a truly extensive wine list.
Nordic oasis
The hotel’s 2,000 square feet lower ground floor spa is overseen by Amazing Space. It is a sophisticated retreat from the bustle of the city and you can enjoy the sauna, hammam and large pool. The spa has an original menu of treatments from facials to massages. Danish supermodel Helena Christensen is a regular. Afterwards you can relax in the snug and snazzy Champagne bar Balthazar down the corridor from the spa and indulge your inner hygge. Rooms start from $850pn and are bookable via the hotel’s website. IN THE GROUND
A Luxurious Wellness Retreat in Yamhill County, Oregon
Nestled within the rolling hills of Yamhill County, Oregon, Inn the Ground offers an unparalleled escape into luxury, sustainability, and nature. This exquisite bed and breakfast is part of The Ground, an ambitious venture by husband-and-wife duo Brenda Smola-Foti and Frank Foti. Their broader enterprise encompasses Tabula Rasa Farms (now part of Source Farms), Humble Spirit Restaurant and Catering, the original Farmhouse B&B, the garden, the event center, the store, and Yamhill House. Brenda, who founded Tabula Rasa Farms in 2015, has worked tirelessly alongside Frank to create an environment that harmoniously blends regenerative farming with world-class hospitality.
Brenda’s journey began with a vision of sustainability, and as the farm evolved, so did its purpose. Animals were introduced to the farm in 2017, and Frank brought his expertise in business and leadership when he joined in 2019. Initially, the farm was intended to be a 33-acre homestead, but it rapidly expanded into a thriving agricultural and hospitality destination. Recognizing a shortage of accommodations in Yamhill County, the couple saw an opportunity to develop a space where guests could immerse themselves in the serene countryside while enjoying modern luxuries.
A Unique and Sustainable Retreat Inn the Ground is more than just a bed and breakfast—it is an experience

designed to connect guests with nature in an entirely new way. The retreat, built into the hillside, is a luxurious escape that offers an immersive stay in harmony with the land. Brenda and Frank took special care to construct the Inn with minimal impact on the environment, using reclaimed wood and ensuring that the surrounding landscape remained untouched. “Frank and I were intrigued by houses built into hills,” Brenda explained. “The construction allowed us to preserve the natural beauty of the area while offering a truly unique lodging experience.”
Each of the Inn’s nine rooms is designed with comfort and elegance in mind. Guests can enjoy king-sized beds, plush queen-sized sofa sleepers, private patios with breathtaking panoramic views, and modern amenities such as mini-fridges, complimentary coffee and tea stations, spa-inspired bathrooms with soft cotton towels and robes, Samsung HDTVs with sound bars and Apple TV, and electronic safety deposit boxes.
Sustainability is a key component of the Inn’s design. A living rooftop covered in wildflowers not only enhances the building’s aesthetic but also serves to conserve water. Additionally, solar panels contribute to the Inn’s energy efficiency, reinforcing the Fotis’ commitment to environmental stewardship. Immersed in Nature and Adventure Guests at Inn the Ground have access to a variety of activities that highlight
the region’s natural beauty and agricultural abundance. The property boasts eight miles of wooded trails, perfect for a rejuvenating hike through the hills. For those interested in learning more about sustainable farming, guided farm and permaculture tours offer insight into the regenerative practices that sustain The Ground.
For a more leisurely experience, visitors can observe the cattle grazing in the pastures, enjoy complimentary wine tastings at local vineyards, or engage in a friendly game of pickleball or tennis. Regardless of how guests choose to spend their time, they are sure to find relaxation and inspiration at this tranquil retreat.
A Personal Retreat with My Daughter
My daughter Brittney and I had the pleasure of spending a few nights at Inn the Ground, and our experience was nothing short of magical. Upon arrival, we were immediately captivated by the sweeping views of the Willamette Valley, the lush greenery of the pastures, and the gentle sounds of nature that surrounded us.
Our spacious room, thoughtfully designed for both comfort and aesthetic appeal, provided the perfect setting for unwinding. One of our favorite spots was the upstairs communal living area, featuring fireplaces, cozy seating, and floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the wildflower-covered roof. There, we spent time sipping coffee and simply soaking in the tranquility of our
surroundings.
A highlight of our stay was the wellness experience led by Jordan, a dedicated member of the Inn’s team. We began our morning with a guided meditation session in a quiet outbuilding, followed by a forest walk that allowed us to immerse ourselves fully in the serenity of the landscape—the fresh air, rustling of leaves, and peaceful ambiance made for an incredibly rejuvenating experience.
Exploring The Ground’s Farm
One afternoon, Brittney and I joined Heather, one of The Ground’s knowledgeable staff experts, for an in-depth tour of the property. As we wandered through the farm, we learned about the diverse range of animals raised at The Ground and gained a deeper appreciation for the sustainable farming practices employed on-site. The vegetable and fruit gardens were particularly fascinating, as they supply fresh produce not only for Humble Spirit Restaurant but also for breakfasts at the Inn, the local food co-op, and various events hosted by The Ground.
The tour was an educational and eye-opening experience, offering valuable insights into the importance of regenerative agriculture and the ways in which The Ground is making a positive impact on the local food system. Guests are encouraged to explore the farm at their own pace or participate in guided walks.
A Farm-Fresh Culinary Experience
Each morning at Inn the Ground began with a delightful farm-fresh breakfast. We started with an assortment of chocolate and lemon breakfast breads, scones, and a refreshing green juice. These tasty treats were followed by a creamy yogurt parfait topped with housemade granola. The main course consisted of locally sourced ham, fluffy scrambled eggs with chives, and toast served with homemade jam and butter. Every bite was a celebration of the region’s rich agricultural bounty.
An Unforgettable Dinner at Humble Spirit
Our culinary adventures continued with dinner at Humble Spirit, The Ground’s signature restaurant. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the menu featured an exquisite selection of seasonal, farm-to-table dishes crafted by talented chefs.
We began our meal with a trio of shrimp rolls, each bursting with fresh flavors. Next, we enjoyed a colorful hummus plate, accompanied by
seasonal vegetables and delicately adorned with edible flower petals. The highlight of the evening was a perfectly al dente fresh pasta with corn, followed by a succulent roasted chicken that was both hearty and satisfying.
For dessert, Brittney and I indulged in two delec-table treats: a poached pear with blue cheese and housemade Oreo-style cookies served with milk. The combination of flavors was both playful and sophisticated, making for a truly memorable dining experience.
A Luxurious and Meaningful Escape
Our time at Inn the Ground was an unforgettable journey of relaxation, adventure, and culinary delight. The combination of thoughtful hospitality, breathtaking scenery, and sustainable living made this retreat one of the most unique and fulfilling getaways we’ve ever experienced. Whether you’re looking for a romantic escape, a wellness retreat, or an opportunity to connect with nature, Inn the Ground offers the perfect setting to unwind and recharge.
For anyone seeking an extraordinary travel experience in the heart of Yamhill County, Oregon, this hidden gem is a must-visit. Brenda and Frank Foti have masterfully created a space that honors the land, celebrates sustainability, and welcomes guests with open arms. Our stay left us feeling inspired, rejuvenated, and eager to return.

EUPHORBIA MASHATU VILLAS
| BY HEL É NE RAMACKERS
Every once in a while, a lodge so spectacular appears on your radar that it becomes a bucket list item. With some clever planning, the reality of a trip to Euphorbia Mashatu, situated in a remote southeastern corner of Botswana materializes on a Tuesday morning.
Aflight from Lanseria International Airport to Limpopo Valley Airfield with Mashatu Connect has an arrival time of just before 1pm. The airfield is positioned seamlessly within the reserve, and clearing passport control and customs, the game drive has already started before we’ve even reached the lodge, seeing a Marabou stork, some giraffe and a herd of zebra. Driving to the top of the hill, Euphorbia Mashatu’s arrival area comes into sight. An architectural marvel, the lodge was designed and constructed by South African firm Savile Row with Design Director Adrian Davidson leading the project.
“Euphorbia’s exclusive location, situated on an elevated ridge overlooking the Majale River, with superb visibility to the savannah beyond, set within a forest of ancient Euphorbia trees makes it such a special property,” Adrian tells me. “A combination of craft, comfort and a characteristic design idiom enhances the distinctive position, combined with the spirit of the bush experience. Each of the eight villas were designed to maximize the breathtaking views whilst creating private, luxurious spaces for the Euphorbia Mashatu guest.”
My domicile for the next two nights is Villa 8, a short walk from the main area. Opening the door, I’m rendered speechless by the size of the dwelling and the vistas over the bushveld. A baobab is standing proud amongst the Euphorbias. The use of khaki and acacia greens, russet and ochre tones and savannah-hued neutrals add to the wow-factor as I take in the magnificence of the space.
With an understated nod to the safari theme, ebony and darker shades ground the palette in the Villas to provide vital variance and definition. Textured contrast was essential to Savile Row’s interior design and layered onto locally available materials. Aged copper and timber combined with soft mohair, woven rope, canvas paneling and the rich patina of antiqued leather creates an elegant yet relaxed design language. Wooden floors make for a refreshing change from carpets, tiles or concrete floors, bringing about a sense of style. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and high ceilings let in lots of natural light, something that’s a major aspect for Savile Row, which they achieved with a combination of architectural features and interior selections.
Intricate detail and bespoke artistry is seen all around the lodge and Villas, with custom feature lights and
paneling that is hand-woven from bands of copper. Artworks in themselves, many of the pieces have been made in Africa by local craftsmen and manufacturers. Design inspiration for Euphorbia Mashatu came from the surrounding wilderness for both architectural and interior finishes, which is visible in the interplay between the structure and its environs. The indigenous flora and fauna allowed the design throughout, making generous use of local materials to echo the setting – rock and raw stone, and roughhewn timber.
Working closely with Euphorbia Mashatu, the architect team carefully mapped out designing the buildings and walkways to minimize the impact on the site while retaining the beauty of the wilderness. Green technology was incorporated with the use of thermal insulation, solar power and grey water recycling systems. Sustainability is important, and the large solar plant at Euphorbia Mashatu guarantees that the lodge is completely off-the-grid, with a back-up-generator providing electricity on cloudy days.
Building in a remote locale can present many obstacles, particularly logistics-wise. The construction of Euphorbia Mashatu was one of the most challenging Savile Row had faced as a design team, not only due to the presence of wildlife, but with the fabrication nearing completion, the pandemic hit and the entire project came to a grinding halt.
Everything came together once restrictions started lifting, albeit slowly, with finishing materials and teams making their way back to wrap up what they had started, a whole year later in 2021. The result? An awe-inspiring lodge that pays homage to the Mopane tree found in Mashatu Game Reserve, and the Villas shaped like the pods of said tree. In the main area, eye-catching copper chandeliers draw the gaze upwards as they follow the silhouette of the encircling Euphorbia candelabra. On the walls of the dining room and lounge, consideration was given to fashioning an impression
of larger-than-life mopane pods as lights, and leaves were done in gold, casting an illuminated glow over dinners or drinks enjoyed here.
Meals at Euphorbia Mashatu are, simply put, incredible. Head Chef Maggie is responsible for crafting menus, with choices that cater to every palate. The day starts with a pre-game drive continental breakfast, followed by brunch upon your return, High Tea before heading out on safari again, and then the pièce de résistance, dinner in a different spot when you get back at around 7pm. The food is sensational, and attention to detail with presentation makes the cuisine even more delicious. You have to try the Botswana beef fillet, and if it’s not on the menu during your time here, ask Chef, as nothing is too much effort for her.
What would a sojourn at an extraordinary safari lodge be without going out to see what wildlife you can find? Field Guide Cedric with the assistance of Tracker Pontsho are keen to show me what is out there. Euphorbia Mashatu forms part of the 104,000 acre privately owned Mashatu Game Reserve, and apart from the varied terrain, the birdlife is amazing, with in excess of 350 different bird species and counting. A wonderful sighting and sound is seeing a Woodland Kingfisher on our afternoon game drive. This medium-sized Kingfisher has a red beak and bright blue black, wing panel and tail. It’s high-pitched ‘tuui’, with a crescendoed ‘trrrrrrrrr’ is unmistakable, so look out for a medium-sized iridescent bird as they are really striking.
Known for their unrivalled leopard sightings, we encounter a number of different individuals, starting with the Euphorbia male sitting uncomfortably in a Shepherd’s tree, then the Mathoja female on the fallen branch of a Mashatu tree, the Lepako male also in a Mashatu tree, and lastly the highlight for each and every guest, spending time with the White Cliffs leopard and her two female cubs. Considering how elusive these cats are, it’s a privilege to see them up-close out in the wild going about their business. Mashatu Game Reserve is owned by Steve and Maggie Lansdown, who have a vested interest in all things reserve and lodge related. “I remember standing on the outcrop at Euphorbia Mashatu amongst the Euphorbia candelabra, before it was all started,” co-owner Maggie recalls. “The idea was to create a special place. Elevated to make it different from the other lodges, and in keeping with the setting. All involved desired for few if any plants to be disturbed. The villas all needed to be placed so that they had privacy, facing different ways and hidden from each other’s view from the decks, whilst offering astounding panoramas. The materials needed to be natural - stone, metal, wood and leather. We wanted to include some water, not least to assist with cooling. The request was for a contemporary feel with plenty of light and air and making use of any cooling breeze.”
Taking heed of her sentiments, I stroll to my Villa as it’s time to leave and return to South Africa. Pausing every so often to appreciate the scenery, the
magic that is found in this unique part of Botswana, spending time here is really something that should be experienced at least once in your lifetime. Opening the door to my Villa, I look around –I’ll miss this exceptional place and know that the enchantment of Euphorbia Mashatu will stay with me forever.

SYBARIS BISTRO
An Eclectic Pacific Northwest Restaurant
When I think of the best dining experiences in Oregon, one name always stands out—Sybaris Bistro. Owners Janel and Chef Matt Bennett have truly created something special in downtown Albany. Housed in a historic industrial building at the corner of First and Washington Avenues, Sybaris Bistro brings the finest flavors of Oregon to the table, blending eclectic inspiration with classical preparation and innovative techniques. The restaurant’s monthly changing menu, upscale yet comfortable atmosphere, extensive Northwest-focused wine list, and full bar make every visit an exciting culinary journey.
One of the things I love most about Sybaris is the commitment to making everything from scratch. If Chef Bennett can’t make something better than a commercial product, only then will he use it (think Beaufou mustards and Nueskes bacon). But even ketchup? Yes, even that is made in-house. Every day, they bake fresh bread, and thanks to Chef Bennett’s background in pastry, desserts receive the same meticulous attention to detail as the entrées. French chocolate, pure Hawaiian cane sugar, and cream without additives ensure that every sweet bite is worth saving room for.
I have followed Chef Bennett’s career with great admiration, especially when he was invited to cook at the prestigious James Beard House in New York City. Representing the Pacific Northwest, he and his team took extra care to transport the flavors of Oregon to the East Coast—literally. Coolers of Willamette Valley ingredients flew with them while their luggage was mailed to the hotel. That level of dedication speaks volumes about their passion for food. When they returned to the Beard House for the “Willamette Valley Native Tribute,” it was a landmark moment—the first time Native American foods were featured at the esteemed venue. Partnering with The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, the event was a huge success.
On my most recent visit to Sybaris, I was eager to savor a meal inspired by Chef Bennett. My anticipation was rewarded with several dishes that exceeded my high expectations.
I started my evening with a Tuaca Side Car, skillfully crafted by Janel. The blend of Tuaca Brandy, Cointreau, fresh lemon juice, and a hint of orange juice was perfectly balanced and set the stage for an incredible meal.
For my first course, I tried the Green Garlic-Nettle Nage with a 141-degree egg topped with caviar. As Chef Bennett explained, the dish begins with puréed green garlic and nettles, which
are carefully blanched to remove their sting. A lit-tle olive oil and chickpea broth round out the nage, and the egg is cooked in an Emergency Circulator (a countertop sous vide) at precise-ly 141 degrees. The result? A silky, earthy dish where the creamy egg yolk melds beautifully with the vibrant greens, punctuated by a pop of salt from the caviar. Next up was the Cream of Asparagus Soup. This light, creamy soup had a hint of lemon and a velvety texture that made each spoonful luxurious. Chef Bennett revealed his technique—sautéing onions, Yukon Gold potatoes, and butter before covering them with cold water and simmering for an hour. A handful of fresh spinach or parsley, blanched for brightness, is blended in along with roasted buttered asparagus. The potato lends the dish its signature silkiness, while a touch of heavy cream at the end elevates the richness. One of my favorite dishes of the evening was the Greek Spiced Lamb Meatball. It was served in a tomato-lemon-mint sauce with orzo, spring vegetables, and crumbled feta. The flavors were beautifully balanced.
The key, according to Chef Bennett, is dried mint—fresh mint just doesn’t impart the same depth. He shared a personal connection to this dish, recounting how the Greek community in his hometown of Detroit inspired him. For 35 years, he had chased the memory of a particular tomato-lemon-mint sauce. The breakthrough? Portland’s Smith Teas provided a mint tea that finally gave his sauce the bold, aromatic quality he sought. The result was a perfect marriage of flavors that honored his culinary journey.
The Rice Crispy Crusted Rockfish was another standout. Pan-fried in canola oil with Three Crab’s Fish Sauce and paired with sweet chile sauce, coconut sticky rice, and grilled asparagus, the dish had an incredible crunch from the Rice Crispy coating. Typically, the dish includes bell peppers, but as someone who isn’t a fan, I appreciated the kitchen’s willingness to customize. The bright green sauce accompanying the dish was a vibrant blend of watercress and sour cream, adding a fresh counterpoint to the rich, crispy fish. No meal at Sybaris would be complete
without dessert, and I was thrilled to end my evening with the Sybaris Chocolate Hazelnut Cake. This flourless chocolate cake features whole roasted hazelnuts, hazelnut crème brûlée, dark chocolate mousse, and a striking dark chocolate glaze. The secret to its glossy black finish was a unique black cocoa that was introduced by the French Pastry Team in 1993. It is still available via special order. The final touches—whipped cream, hazelnuts, and pearl sugar—added the perfect balance of crunch and sweetness.
Each time I dine at Sybaris Bistro, I remember why it remains one of Oregon’s most exceptional restaurants. From the meticulous attention to ingredients to the thoughtfully crafted dishes, every element of the experience speaks to the passion and artistry of Janel and Chef Bennett. Whether you’re a local or visiting the Willamette Valley, Sybaris Bistro is a must-visit for an unforgettable culinary adventure.
Dinner + Exclusive Interview with THIERRY BLOUETT
Nestled against the hillside just outside downtown Puerto Vallarta, Café des Artistes promises an exceptional dining experience. My husband, Steve, and I had the pleasure of dining there after an exciting interview with Chef Thierry Blouet himself. From start to finish, the evening was a feast for all the senses.
Therestaurant’s interior exudes elegance, with each dining area offering a distinct vibe. We were escorted through the enchanted space and out into the garden, where we climbed the stairs to the uppermost table. From there, we had the best view of the lush, glowing garden. The ambiance was magical, and our servers, Javiar and Daniel, anticipated and met our every need throughout the evening.
Our culinary journey began with two amuse-bouches: a passion fruit sphere topped with coconut foam and a miniature tostada adorned with ceviche, avocado, lime gel, and habanero mayonnaise. The first was sweet, light, and refreshing, while the second had a delightful kick, balanced perfectly by the creamy avocado. These dishes arrived with two mezcal margaritas. One was smoky, fruity, and creamy, spiced with a tajin rim, while the other was a vibrant green concoction, bursting with lime, kiwi, mint, and the unmistakable earthiness of mezcal.
Our first course was the Cacti from the Labyrinth and Roasted Avocado, accompanied by Chef Thierry’s Rosé Thierry 2022 Sauvignon Blanc. The crisp acidity of the wine harmonized beautifully with the dish, while the tomato juice, cotija cheese, and croutons provided texture and flavor that left us savoring every bite.
Next came the Tomato Fantasy Au Chitextle Pepper, an artful medley of tomatoes, foam, roasted baby corn, a tomato wafer, and a cloud of white garlic foam. The vibrant flavors and textures danced on my palate, setting a high bar for what was yet to come.
The Roasted Asian Cabbage was a revelation. Twenty perfect layers, bathed in a sweet and savory Asian sauce, created a dish that was both comforting and innovative.
As the sun set, the garden transformed. Twinkling lights illuminated the foliage, and a violinist serenaded diners, amplifying the romantic atmosphere. It was the perfect backdrop for our subsequent courses.
The Zarandeado Red Snapper filet was an absolute standout. Served atop creamy risotto with peas, chorizo, saffron, and fish jus, it earned an enthusiastic 10 from both of us. Equally impressive was the Marinated Broiled Octopus with Chicatanas. The octopus was tender and flavorful, complemented by smoked organic beets, green pea mousseline, beef and scallop tartare, bone marrow, and a luscious red wine sauce. This dish was a masterpiece. We also enjoyed the Roasted Pork Belly with Citrus Spices and Brussels Sprouts and the Sliced New York Strip Au Curry. However, the Foie Gras Crème Brulee stole the spotlight once again, with its rich, velvety texture paired with cassis sorbet and spiced bread—a perfect 10.
For the final dessert, we delighted in a playful Chocolate Taco with cashew crumbles. This whimsical treat capped off an evening of impeccable service, exquisite cuisine, and unmatched attention to detail. Café des Artistes is not just a restaurant—it’s an experience. For anyone visiting Puerto Vallarta, it’s an absolute must.
My Interview with CHEF THIERRY
Chef Thierry, it’s an honor to sit down with you. Your restaurant, Café des Artistes in Puerto Vallarta, is iconic. How does it feel looking back on 34 years of its legacy?
Thank you, Tracy. It’s been an incredible journey. When I opened the restaurant 34 years ago, it was just a tiny corner spot in Puerto Vallarta—a quiet town back then. Over the years, it has grown—sometimes during good times, sometimes through challenges. Today, Café des Artistes is a unique place that represents my life’s work. I’m very proud of what we’ve built here.
I understand your daughter worked with you for a while. Are all your children involved in hospitality?
Not all of them. My eldest daughter worked with me in the kitchen for a time before going to Paris for culinary school. She stayed in France for ten years but plans to return to Mexico to help open our new restaurant in Bucerías later this year. It will be a small, home-style concept, cooking what we love at home. My second daughter is in Guadalajara, consulting for restaurants, even though she never formally studied hospitality. My youngest sons are pursuing their own paths— one is in real estate near Dallas, and the other is studying in Santa Barbara. But hospitality runs in the family, even if not everyone works directly with me.
Your passion for the kitchen is evident. What drew you to this career?
Growing up, I lived in hotels managed by my father, so the hospitality world always surrounded me. Cooking was a hobby I loved, but I never imagined it would become my career. In high school, I considered many paths, but I eventually decided to try culinary school in New York. They required a year of industry experience, and during that time, I fell in love with the profession. I decided to skip school and trained intensively instead. That training, coupled with opportunities to work in Mexico’s finest hotels and restaurants,
became my college.
What led you to Puerto Vallarta?
When I first visited, I was struck by its natural beauty. It reminded me of my childhood in New Caledonia—the sea, fishing, and outdoor life. I came here for a one-year job and fell in love with the place. I told myself I’d leave for France after that year, but the hotel manager convinced me to stay longer by offering me training opportunities in France and Chicago. Those experiences broadened my perspective, but Puerto Vallarta had my heart. That’s when I decided to open Café des Artistes.
What was it like starting from scratch? It was a challenge. I started with no money, renting a small house with 60 seats. The rent was high, and I had to borrow at steep interest rates. In 1994, a devaluation doubled my debt overnight. It was a tough time, but the devaluation also brought more American and Canadian tourists to Puerto Vallarta, which saved us. Slowly, I expanded—renting and eventually buying surrounding lots. It took 20 years to own the property and another 20 to transform it into what it is today.
What sets Café des Artistes apart from other restaurants in Puerto Vallarta?
Many of our guests tell us there’s nothing like it, even worldwide. The magic begins when you step into the garden—the heart of the restaurant. It’s an oasis of beauty and tranquility. Combine that with our dedication to exceptional service and a menu that blends French techniques with Mexican flavors, and you have an unforgettable experience. Every detail, from the architecture to the ambiance, was designed to make guests feel transported.
Speaking of your menu, how would you describe your culinary style?
My style is a blend of my French heritage and my love for Mexico. The menu combines French techniques with Mexican ingredients. For example, I’ll pair the best local seafood
with classic French sauces or create dishes that highlight Mexican spices in a refined way. Over the years, I’ve shifted towards simplicity—focusing on the quality of ingredients and using techniques to enhance, not overwhelm their natural flavors.
Do you have a favorite ingredient?
That’s hard to say! I love tomatoes. A perfectly ripe tomato with the best olive oil, a touch of fleur de sel, and maybe some fresh herbs can be a sublime meal. It’s the simple things done well that stand out to me.
Are you still producing your own tequila and wine? Yes, though it’s more of a passion project than a business. Our wines are made in collaboration with talented winemakers across Mexico. We have a Sauvignon Blanc from Sinaloa, a Merlot from Baja California, and a rosé named after my wife, Rosette. These wines are currently available exclusively in our restaurants, but we plan to expand distribution. As for tequila, we serve a house blend that pairs perfectly with our cuisine.
It seems like you’ve managed to integrate your passions into your work.
Absolutely. My wife, Rosette, is a jewelry designer, and her creations are featured in the restaurant. We also grow herbs and microgreens on our rooftop garden and collaborate with local farmers. To me, success isn’t just about financial rewards—it’s about loving what you do. When your work aligns with your passions, it never feels like work.
What advice would you give to someone starting in the culinary world?
Follow your passion, but be prepared for hard work. This industry is demanding, but if you love what you do, the challenges become part of the adventure. Always strive for excellence and stay true to your vision. Most importantly, never stop learning. That curiosity will keep you inspired and growing.
Thank you for sharing your story, Chef Thierry. It’s inspiring to see how your love for food, culture, and community has created something so special.

SEVENTY ONE GOLDEN MARTINI
The World’s Trendiest and Most Fashionable Cocktail
| BY KEVIN PILLEY
Fashion photographer Mert Alas helped create the world’s trendiest gin and most fashionable Martini. The “category-defining spirit!” is also the most hyperbolic gin in the world. Launched in 2021, SEVENTY ONE is “the definitive luxury gin, a singular expression of the exceptional and the rare.
“Seen in the hands of the world’s most beautiful and discerning in NYC, London, Milan, and Paris... a spirit crafted to exalt the senses, heralding a new era of modern luxury spirits for the culturally curious….SEVENTY ONE’s signature serve is redefining the martini, SEVENTY ONE pays homage to the night.!
Using “the finest botanical absolutes, each individually distilled to reach their apogee of expression”. Ingredients include rare Queen of the Night cactus flower (Selenicereus Glandiflorus).
Blooming once a year, and only at night, the Queen of the Night’s flowers wilt before dawn. The final composition rests for 71 nights in a selection of virgin Spanish oak, ex-Pedro Ximenes sherry casks and ex-Cognac casks, ensuring the botanicals marry.
Alas and Marcus Piggott have collaborated as a photography duo for the past 30 years. They have directed music videos for Madonna and Nicki Minaj, and have shot advertising campaigns for many leading luxury brands, including Gucci, Versace, Valentino, Calvin Klein,
Miu Miu, Lancome, Giorgio Armani, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton, and seven consecutive years of Givenchy campaigns under the creative direction of Riccardo Tisci. The ultra-premium gin brand has just released a NIGHT FLASK 20cl iteration. Weighing 600g. It draws inspiration from Art Deco architecture and Alas’ lifelong personal collection of fine crystal decanters and stemware. Wine lovers from all around the world recognize Napa Valley as an iconic region that strengthens its esteemed status through every harvest. The 2019 vintage demonstrates how Napa Valley consistently delivers outstanding wines despite difficult growing conditions.
A cool and wet spring in 2019 delayed the Napa Valley growing season start compared to recent years. Following this period a warm summer season occurred that featured only slight temperature increases which enabled grapes to mature at a consistent rate. The weather conditions during the growing season resulted in wines that demonstrated exceptional freshness along with balanced flavors and smooth tannins. The 2019 harvest yielded slightly fewer crops when compared to 2018 but delivered superior quality through vibrant acidity and excellent fruit concentration.
The 2019 Louis M. Martini Lot 1 Cabernet Sauvignon embodies the remarkable qualities of its harvest year. The wine shows a captivating deep ruby-red color when poured into a glass. Expressive on the nose this wine displays tantalizing aromas of ripe blackberries and cassis along with dark chocolate hints while showing subtle tobacco and clove notes. This wine demonstrates a well-balanced structure and softness with rich texture while delivering layers of juicy dark fruits that intertwine with well-blended tannins and oak spice notes.
