DR. NIRMALYA KUMAR Professor of the Art | BY RAJ GILL
Dr. Nirmalya Kumar is Lee Kong Chian Professor of Marketing at Singapore Management University and Distinguished Fellow at INSEAD Emerging Markets Institute. As a consultant and speaker, Nirmalya has worked with over 50 Fortune 500 companies in 60 different countries. He has served on many boards of directors each with billion dollars plus in capitalization.
A
s an author, Nirmalya has written nine books, a prolific case writer; he has won six Case Centre adoption awards and the Outstanding Contribution to the Case Method. Nirmalya is considered one of the world’s leading thinkers on strategy and marketing. He was thrice included in Thinkers50 (the biannual listing of the top 50 management thinkers in the world), received their “Global Village Award” for his contributions to the business community’s understanding of globalization and emerging markets, and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2017. Nirmalya Kumar is a passionate supporter of Indian art. Previously a patron of the British Museum, he has also served on the South Asian Acquisi-tion Committee for Tate Modern. Over three decades, his collection of Bengal School, 1900-1950, has focused on Jamini Roy (considered to be the father of Indian modern art), Hemen Mazumdar (primary exponent of academic realism in Indian art) and Rabindranath Tagore (Nobel laureate 1913).
Nirmalya frequently lends works to exhibitions. For his contributions to South Asian art, the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) awarded Nirmalya an honorary fellowship in 2012. On a recent London visit, our reporter Raj Gill had the opportunity to discuss everything from what inspires him to continue collecting to the perfect advice for a wannabe collector. WHAT DREW YOU TO THE ART WORLD? (PUN INTENDED!) I got my first real exposure to visual artists at the Art Institute of Chicago, where I loved their Impressionist collection. It triggered a desire to learn about Indian art, first traditional, and then modern Indian art. A few ad hoc purchases were followed by my first sight of a Jamini Roy painting. It is this that ultimately injected the collecting bug in me. WERE THERE ANY ARTISTS OR COLLECTORS IN YOUR FAMILY? WHAT DO

THEY THINK OF THE FACT THAT YOU COLLECT ART? My family had no interest in visual arts. My parents were focussed on performing arts. WHAT IN PARTICULAR IS IT ABOUT ROY THAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK FOR MORE? Since it was love at first sight, I cannot articulate what it was that really moved me. Maybe it was the colors, the symmetry, or perhaps it evoked in my images I had subconsciously absorbed growing up as a child in Calcutta. By that time, I had purchased half a dozen paintings of different Indian artists. But, after my first encounter with Jamini, for almost a decade, whenever I considered buying paintings and saw a Jamini versus another painter, the Jamini always chose me. Over time, as I learned more about Jamini, the ‘idea’ behind his work – defining what should be modern Indian art and how to resolve the tension of identity while living in a multicultural world – seduced me. Trained at the British run Government College of Art in Calcutta, Jamini achieved his initial success painting portraits in the western academic style. But he grappled with the conundrum: How to be modern, unique, as well as true to oneself (which in the context of Jamini was being Indian). His resolution was inspired by Indian folk artists, especially the Kalighat style. Unlike western academic art that emphasized light, depth, and perspective, Kalighat artists drew an unbroken line, which was followed by quickly filling the plane with color. In his conceptual breakthrough of the “flat” technique, he took a diametrically opposing path from his earlier career as a portrait painter: the medium was watercolor instead of oil; the subjects were the rural rather than wealthy Calcutta patrons, and its technique was Indian in its representation in contrast to the Western realism. What I love about Jamini is that he borrowed, but never mimicked. Jamini’s line and perspective had the sophistication to transform indigenous folk art into high art. As an immigrant, who has spent more than 30 years living outside India, in the USA, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and now, Singapore, the question of how does one connect to, and be proud of, one’s cultural traditions while still being a global citizen resonates with me. As a result, my connection to Jamini’s paintings moved from the purely visual plane to the deeper emotional and intellectual levels.
ARE YOU NOT CURIOUS ABOUT ARTISTS OF OTHER NATIONALITIES? AND IF SO WHO INTERESTS YOU? I love western art. My favorites are the usual suspects: from Francis Bacon, Van Gogh, Lucian Freud, Matisse, Modigliani, Picasso, Turner, to my friend Howard Hodgkin, who passed away relatively recently. I may have liked to collect Western art but unfortunately, everyone that I covet is far out of my budget.
16 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | BEST OF LUXURY 2020
ART
Anyway, the big idea in collecting is to limit yourself as only then can your collection become something. My focus in on Bengal School, 1900-1950. It is where I can make a difference.
SIT AND LOOK AT A PIECE?
Sorry, I do not follow contemporary art.
In my London apartment, it is impossible to escape as the paintings surround me. Each painting was acquired because I fell in love with it. Not only do I appreciate the beauty of the work, its rareness, the touch of genius behind it and its proximity to me, but often the unique story of its acquisition. While I may possess 250-300 artworks, each is individual and was acquired as such.
WHAT IS IT THAT DRIVES YOU TO KEEP COLLECTING?
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A WANNABE COLLECTOR?
To learn about, document, and promote the story of the emergence of modern Indian art as a movement that had its origins in Calcutta in the first half of the 20th Century. By the 19th century, the British had convinced themselves that India had no artistic culture in comparison to the West. A quote from the Official Handbook of the Victoria and Albert Museum of 1880 reflects this: ‘The monstrous shapes of the puranic deities unsuitable for the highest forms of artistic representation and this is possibly why sculp-ture and painting are unknown as fine arts in India.’ As a result, the British established the Government College of Art in Calcut-ta, to train Indians in Western fine arts. As Indian artists joined the freedom movement, they questioned what ‘Indian modern art’ should be. The initial answer was Indian subjects painted in the Western academic style. The leading exponent of this was Hemen Mazumdar, an artist of who occupies a central place in my collection. My collection of more than 25 artists from 1900-1950 Bengal School rebelled against this western idea of art, and as a result, gave birth to Indian modern art.
Be curious, learn constantly, seek advice, and remember before acquiring an artwork that you have to live with it every day for the rest of your life. Would you still enjoy looking at it if it fell in value by half or more? Most importantly, be clear on your objectives. Are you a striver (buy art to demonstrate you have arrived), decorator (art complements your furnishings), investor (see art as an alternative investment vehicle), or a collector (motivated by passion and learning for the art you collect). Objectives should determine the collecting strategy.
WHO WOULD YOU RECOMMEND AS AN EMERGING ARTIST OF NOTE? I.E. THE ONE TO WATCH?
AND YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE ARTWORK? It’s an unanswerable question for me. These paintings are like my children, I cannot choose one between them. Yes, some are dearer than others, but one, that’s too difficult a choice. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOU STAND BEFORE A REALLY GREAT PIECE OF ART? It lingers in my mind after I have seen it. I talk about it with my friends. It haunts me and is historically important.
YOU ARE OPEN ABOUT THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE MADE PURCHASE MISTAKES, HOWEVER, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR ULTI-MATE PURCHASE TRIUMPH? Surprisingly, it is not a painting by an Indian painter. Browsing through a 2013 auction catalog of British art in New York, I noticed a painting of Tippoo Sultan’s defeat at the hands of the British by Turner. A little research indicated that Turner did only five paintings of India and had never visited the country. This is perhaps why, even though he is considered the greatest colorist and painter of sky, the colors resemble Egypt more than India. Tate Britain owns the other painting in the series. The opportunity to acquire it was irresistible. For an immigrant who left India with four hundred dollars and a one way ticket to the USA, this Turner above my mantelpiece documents my journey. Whenever, I see it, I feel truly blessed. The painting is now slated to go on loan to Tate Britain for an exhibition that will then travel to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Kimbell Art Museum, Texas.

The Million stitch Roll-Royce Phantom | BY JARONE ASHKENAZI
This one-of-a-kind Rolls-Royce Phantom, appropriately named the Rose Phantom, was commissioned by a Stockholm-based entrepreneur to include over one million stitches. Sewn together to bring to life his extraordinary passion for flowers – each of his four children are named after flowers – to life. This enchanting creation was made believable by the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective which encompasses a team of craftspeople, designers and engineers to produce this floral scene.
T
he rolling sanctuary of a million-stitched floral scene is seen on the interior of this Phantom’s headliner, door panels and dashboard. “Our extraordinary craftspeople at the Home of Rolls-Royce have achieved, with this car, something which can only be described as sublime,” said Torsten Müller Ötvös, Chief Executive, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “I know that these skills could not be replicated anywhere else in the world. This is undoubtedly one of the greatest Rolls-Royce Phantoms of its generation.” The Primary inspiration for Ieuan Hatherall, a Bespoke Designer for Rolls-Royce, actually came from the Rose Garden at the Home of RollsRoyce in Goodwood, West Sussex. As the only place in the world where the Phantom Rose is grown, the courtyard of the marque’s Global Centre of Luxury Manufacturing Excellence at Goodwood is the home to this enchanting flower. Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective was able to create
the same sense of awe in the Rose Phantom as the “abundance of flowers [lifts] the spirit and celebrate nature’s decadent beauty, in the Rose Phantom’s serene interior,” according to Hatherall. The beautiful Peacock Blue exterior of the Rose Phantom and the Charles Blue twinned-coach line organically create the motif of the rose stem which invites you into its plush interior. Upon entering through the coach doors, the satin stitch creation is visible on the rear doors and the rear cabin showing a stunning artistic masterpiece. From bud to full bloom, the design of the Phantom Rose shows varying stages of maturity of the flower growing across the roof – illuminated with individually placed fiber-optic lights and rear of the car.

MICHAEL FAUSTO
An Ode To The Modern Heroine Through the Eyes of New York Based Designer | BY DEVE SANFORD
Every decade has an emerging, quintessential designer in which he or she designs creating a symbolic tangibility between fashion and the world around them. Freedom and youthful energy is not the only thing reflected in the intricately, understated elegance of New York-based designer, Michael Fausto’s latest collection; a universal intersection of past, present, and future intermingle in creating the ultimate source of beauty.
I
t is only a matter of time before Michael Fausto leaves his mark upon the fashion industry, and some may agree, that he already has. Upscale Living Magazine had the opportunity to sit down with the designer to talk about what inspires him and how he magically translates those feelings into unique and empowering pieces. WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START WITHIN THE FASHION INDUSTRY? I grew up in New Jersey, surrounded by acres of trees and expansive horse farms. This bucolic surrounding was often juxtaposed by frequent trips to New York City with my parents, as my mother was an executive at ABC
News for more than two decates. Art was an integral part of my childhood; I could often be found sitting in the grass of my backyard, sketching on whatever I could get my hands on. While the majority of my illustrations revolved around women and what they were wearing, it wasn’t until my uncle, a film editor, had shown us his most recent movie, “The Devil Wear Prada”, that I realized where I should be channeling my creativity. Determined to carve my path as a fashion designer, I began taking classes at a local quilting shop, just to learn how to sew. I then took summer classes at FIT where I befriended actress Sadie Friedman, daughter ot Tony Award winner & Oscar Nominee Joan Allen, whom I began making dresses for (most recently dressed her for the opening night of “The Waverly Gallery on Broadway”.) Upon choosing what colelge to attend, I was conflicted with the choice of an Ivy League education at Cornell or pursuing my passion at The Fashion Institute of Technology. Choosing to follow my dreams at FIT, I was thrilled to spend the next 4 years enveloping myself in work and ready to take advantage of every opportunity I could. After interning at houses such as Oscar de la Renta, Marchesa, and Dennis Basso; I was recruited as the Associate Designer for Evening Wear and Couture at Badgley Mischka. While at Badgley, I developed new styles that were featured in Bergdorf Goodman and Saks, in addition to
working on custom celebrity dressing for clients such as Robin Roberts for the Oscars and Allison Janney at the Emmys. From there, I moved to Theia, an evening and bridal company, where I headed their beading and embroidery design and had my work featured in the New York Times. In pursuit of continuing my professional growth, I began consulting for several luxury bridal labels where my designs were featured in ELLE, Glamour, and Town & Country and showcased by retailers such as Bloomingdales. After reflecting on how well my work had been received by press, media, stylists, and buyers, at the age of twenty-five, I ventured into creating a label of my own. DO YOU HAVE ANY MENTORS? I am lucky to have several close friends and associates I can refer to as mentors. They vary greatly in industry and experiences, which is most advantageous to me when I need different perspectives on matters I am contemplating. They include entrepreneurs, lawyers, hedge fund directors, and even Broadway producers. One of the most significant mentors I have had is Massimiliano Giornetti, former Creative Director of Ferragamo. During my studies at Polimoda in Florence, Italy, I was paired with him to develop my thesis. A talented and intelligent designer who is eager to share his knowledge, Mr. Giornetti advanced how I think about the

design process and also the construction behind my work. Through his largesse, I was connected with the premiere vendors throughout Italy. Mantero Seta, one of the most wellregarded mills in Europe, developed by hand painted artwork into yards of beautiful silk twill. And Massanti Piume, the artisans behind feather embroidery for Fendi and Cavalli, provided vibrantly dyed plumes to accent pieces of my thesis. His guidance and assistance have been invaluable to me, and I carry it with me in every new venture.
carry everything from opulent jacquards to sensuous silk satins. Texture and depth are integral to my designs as well, so much of my artwork comes from fruition in custom beaded pieces. This is evident in pieces such as our “Azzurra” skirt, which is made from custom dyed handwoven strips of raffia and scattered Swarovski crystals, and our “Bimonte” skirt, bestrewn with custom dyed coral beads.
FROM WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION?
The newest collection is born from my love for the jewel box that is Capri. An unending spring of life and beauty, the island has been a magnet for artists, poets, socialites and more for years. Wheter you are having a freshly grilled fish at La Fontelina or envisioning Homer’s sirens bathing near the Faraglioni, Capri offers glamour and excitement to everyone.
I often find inspiration in music. Personally, I find it as the purest of inspiration, as music has no inherent imagery attached to it. Yet in listening to a song I can envision debutante twirling in mille-feuilles of tulle, empowered dames strutting down Madison Avenue, and countless other incarnations. Whether it be through an overture or an 80’s europop song, I create a world in which my muse lives and designs her closet around this. WALK US THROUGH YOUR DESIGN PROCESS. As previously mentioned, I often gravitate towards a song, or sub-genre of music which becomes the soundtrack of the collection. From there, I create the environment for my woman; who she is, where she is, what food she likes, what she does for work, etc. In the creation of this work, I begin sketching immediately. Scribbles and ideas slowly become well-rounded designs, common themes begin to connect looks, and a story begins to unravel. After clearly defining my concept and amassing piles of sketches, I start fabric sourcing. I work with many European vendors, small and large, who
TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEWEST COLLECTION.
After years of visiting the island, I recently watched the movie “It Started in Naples” with Sophia Loren. In the film, Loren sings and dances in a local club on Capri (the most famous performance being “Tu vuo fa L’American”.) Immediately I began creating a world in my head, along with Ms. Loren supplying the perfect soundtrack. From there it was easy to picture my muse shopping in the Piazza Umberto, basking in the sun at a local lemon grove, or drinking sangria at one of the glamorous beach clubs. The inspiration was interpreted into vibrant colors seen in limoncello and bougainvillea Italian satin, dramatic ruffles reminiscent of nymphs emerging from the shore, and undulating hand draped neoprene. The collection features pieces for any occasion a woman may have, whether you need a simple white crepe pant to wear for a luncheon, or a climatic limone jacquard gown for a benefit gala.
We recently debuted the collection wtih a presentation at The Baccarat Hotel, with attendees such as David Barton (David Barton Gym and TMPL Gyms), Suzanne Grant (Producer behind Moulin Rouge on Broadway), and Freddie Leiba (former Creative Director of Harper’s Bazaar). We also collaborated with Christofle for Wedding Weekend on Madison Avenue, where several of our bridal looks were featured for an in-store special event (other participating designers included Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera). IN WHICH WAYS DO YOU FEEL THE FASHION INDUSTRY HAS EVOLVED, PARTICULARLY PERTAINING TO COUTURE? Fashion seems to be at a very interesting juncture. While the majority of retail has moved online and fast fashion is near unavoidable, interest in the world of couture is at a high. With the proliferation of social media, access to seeing inside this once exclusive world is available to almost everyone. Customers who were once unreachable, now have the opportunity to see luxury collections from designers across the globe. Furthermore, this is why I believe the niche business of Demi-couture is the future. Though it is easy for a woman to buy a simple “made in china” dress from a mass retailer, the desire for fantasy and drama still lives on. Women still want to emulate what they see on the runways of Paris but perhaps do not have the budget to allocate $50,000 for a dress. Now they have the opportunity to access designers such as ourselves, who offer made-tomeasure fashion for a fraction of the “haute couture” price. Through social media, we have been connected with customers across the world, with clients from Paris to Bali. We offer couture fabrications and techniques but are as accessible as ready-to-wear. In

a world where everyone is connected and our lives are flooded with thousands of images a day, women want to feel important and unique; and it is through services like ours that luxury fashion advances. WHAT IS A PRINCIPAL CONSISTENCY OR TRADEMARK FOUND WITHIN YOUR DESIGNS; THE QUALITY IN WHICH PEOPLE ARE ABLE TO IDENTIFY A “MICHAEL FAUSTO PIECE?” Michael Fausto pieces always offers a sense of drama. Our signature styles often play with dramatic drapes and folds, almost as if the fabric organically enveloped around the figure. Aside from this, all of our pieces are made in New York with the highest attention to detail. Each style is assigned a specific seamstress who has worked on the garment since inception and understands it inside and out. As many of our pieces require couture finishes, this is integral to keeping a high quality standard. With each new sample and order, I am personally involved with the creation as well. Every garment passes through my hands, whether through perfecting the drape of a collar, or adjusting the beading so it sits just right. I feel a personal connection with all of my work, and I want my clients to know that each garment has thought and care behind it. WHO WOULD BE A DREAM CLIENT OR COLLABORATION? A dream collaboration would be with women in the political realm, whether that be a head of state, government official, or cultural attache. I admire women who are intellligent, influential, and are advancing our world for the better. WHO IS YOUR CLIENT? WHO DO YOU THINK YOUR DESIGNS CATER TO MOST?
I design for the modern heroine. She is powerful and confident in herself, and is unafraid to be seen and heard. Growing up surrounded by strong and determined women. I am inspired by the sheer power of femininity and all of its incarnations. My designs cater to women who want to celebrate their life and enjoy commanding attention. Delivering a refined sensibility coupled with a flair for drama, this clothing is made to exalt women. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR BRAND FIVE YEARS FROM NOW? Five years from now, I want to be regarded as the young designer who combined European aesthetic with American sensibility. As a young designer, it is difficult to find support, especially within the world of high fashion. Seeing a designer like Zac Posen have to shutter his business is disheartening, but I strive to fill the void left and expand on what women perceive occasion dressing as in this day and age. There is a demographic of women who appreciate art in clothing, and are wanting to find something special that transcends generations. My message to them is that I am here! It is my goal to inject life and vibrancy into the couture market, and I want to share my vision with women across the globe. DO YOU PREFER MORE CLASSIC OR TRENDY? IS THERE A WAY TO COMBINE BOTH? I prefer to have a wardrobe that can last years. I a world where runway looks are recreated within days of premiering, trends are constantly changing. In an effort to combine both classic and trendy, I find it best to look for refined pieces that have an exciting detail, rather than the entire piece being a trend statement. Whether you find a clean blazer with a beaded lapel, or blouse with a draped detail, its im-

portant that you invest your money in lasting pieces that will bring you joy for seasons to come. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO SEE A WOMAN DRESSED IN? I love to see a woman in a gown. She is unrestrained by what the office dictates, what the weather is, or what current trends is in. Evening-wear exists on a different plane, where a woman can express herself in an uninhibited way. To me, there is nothing more exciting than seeing a woman walk into an event, glowing with confidence and individuality, who floats through the room swathed in a gorgeous gown. This is why my creativity gravitates toward this type of dressing. Looking at the women attending events such as the UNICEF Dallas Gala or The Young Fellows Ball at the Frick; all of them emanate a pal-pable air of grace and distinction. This is what inspires me to design. YOUR FAVORITE PIECE OF CLOTHING? My favorite piece of clothing is a tan basket weave laser-cut leather Armani blazer. Most recently I wore it to the Opening Night Benefit Dinner of Shakespeare in the Park. The craftsmanship is inspiring, from the lap seaming of the panels,to the intricate artwork of embossing and laser cutting the leather. While I do not wear it often, it fits like a globe and makes you feel like all good fashion should; excited. BEING WELL-DRESSED MEANS? Being well dressed means feeling confident in how you present yourself. That’s the magic of fashion. A fantastic outfit elevates how you hold yourself. It gives you the confidence to ace an interview, the nerve to speak to some-one you have been enamored with, or even the gravitas to command respect.

Classic Time Pieces Changing the World | BY ANGELA SARA WEST
Backed by Sir Richard Branson and boasting Prince Charles as a fan, ethical watch brand Vitae London combines beautiful, minimalist design with maximal social justice.
A
ngela Sara West chats with Will Adoasi, founder of the highly-successful company which is changing the lives of children in Africa by giving them access to education and more through donating its profuse profits.
London timepiece is imbued with the premise behind their mission. Pairing minimalist concepts with stylish modernity, Vitae watches are elegant timepieces which not only look great, but are making a difference in the world.
Not only does Will Adoasi possess one of Sir Richard Branson’s watches, personally handed to him by the world-famous British entrepreneur on buying one of Will’s, but his lucrative brand is helping to transform the lives of children in Africa through purchases of his fashionable, quality watches at affordable prices.
With the desire to advance social justice within the company’s DNA, all Vitae London watches support children within several Sub-Saharan African provinces, and with every watch sold from their new Elmington collection, a child is gifted a solar lamp from the charity Pen to Paper Ghana. “Our latest initiative is providing children in remote villages of Ghana with solar lamps with every watch sold, meaning they don’t have to travel for hours to find a streetlamp or burn kerosene, which is harmful for health and is a cause of house fires.”
“Purpose is at the core of what we do, and we love that through the sales of our watches we can constantly and sustainably support children across the continent of Africa with our profits,” he explains. Will is passionate about creating watches that combine classic and beautiful design with social justice. Subtle, slim and sophisticated, each Vitae

His humble beginnings inspired Will to create a company with social change at its heart, and his goal is to help us all ‘live without limits’ – whether we were born in the UK, Africa, or anywhere else in the world. “Above all, I see it as a great responsibility. I’m passionate now, more than ever, to ensure we uphold a strong rigorous standard across the whole organization and improve over time in the areas that need improving.” EXCITING NEW ELMINGTON COLLECTION
The new range of modular-interchangeable fashion watches is available exclusively through Kickstarter - www. kickstarter.com/projects/vitaelondon/ elmington-watch/ - with the delivery of the watches in January 2020. “Our Kickstarter campaign launched on October 1st and we hit our £20k goal within a week!” Ensuring their timepieces are of the highest quality, each watch features either a high-quality genuine leather band or a stainless steel band, and is equipped with elegant scratch-resis-

The watches in the Elmington range come in a choice of four face colors (silver, blue, gun metal grey and black) and each watch can be bought with interchangeable straps and bezel (rim) – in a choice of silver, rose gold or gold. Every watch in the Elmington range is fully modular, interchangeable and water-resistant. Additional features include sub-dials with stop-watch functionality and sunray dials. “This is a new range of interchangeable watches, meaning you don’t have to purchase multiple watches to create different looks for different occasions,” Will explains. “We love that it also means that if there is ever a defect with a product in the future, we can interchange on singular elements as opposed to the customer having to purchase another watch.”
Will’s message to readers on the importance of sustainability? “The key thing I want to get across is that as well as making a difference for the planet and the people of the planet, factoring in sustainability measures actually makes business sense. Consumers are aware now more than ever, so ensuring you’re keeping up with best practices makes you relevant and keeps you at the front of mind for customers.” Instagram: @VitaeLondon Twitter: @VitaeLondon vitaelondon.com © Angela Sara West 2019 www.angelasarawest.com
BACKED BY BRANSON! The ethical brand is backed by Sir Richard Branson and Virgin StartUp, with Sir Richard among the first to buy and wear a Vitae London watch. “Out of 10,000 businesses, I was selected as one of two start-up founders to get one-on-one mentoring with Richard Branson, and he also bought a watch from our collection,” Will explains. “It’s amazing that he understands the vision and has told the world about what we’re building!” When it was time to tell Vitae London his feedback, Richard said, “What you are doing is great… very simple but effective.” The Virgin tycoon even gave Will his old watch! “I still have his watch to this day,” Will reveals. “ I often wonder what’s the best thing to do with it… or if I should pay it forward to another young entrepreneur.” A ROYAL FAN Prince Charles has also supported Vitae in Ghana, where Will met HRH The Prince of Wales at a private dinner event. “That was definitely one of the most humbling experiences of my life. Exactly 30 years after my father left Ghana, I was back in Ghana at a banquet with Prince Charles. Hearing him speak so highly of the business was amazing, and has definitely been a reference point of inspiration during the harder seasons.” Will was also selected to attend a reception of UK entrepreneurs to meet the Prime Minister at Number 10 in October 2019. “I went to the reception and they were honoring outstanding young Entrepreneurs for Black History Month. Unfortunately, due to Brexit negotiations, Boris Jonson couldn’t attend, so the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sajid Javid, gave a speech in Boris’s place. It was great to be there and meet so many other driven business owners.” Other big-name fans of the brand include ITV’s This Morning and Dancing on Ice presenter Phillip Schofield, singer/songwriter Emeli Sandé, rapper/entrepreneur Tinchy Stryder and singer/songwriter/actress, Paloma Faith. As for Will, he’s inspired by another sustainability influencer. “I’m very inspired by Blake Mycoskie of TOMs Shoes. I love the impact they’ve had on the planet, yet their ability to be profitable whilst doing so, which empowers them to transform even more lives.” MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR OUR PEOPLE & PLANET Vitae London is also looking into ways in which they can improve the sustainability of their production for the planet. “One thing we’ve done recently begin the process of phasing out leather from our product range and ensuring all our materials are recyclable.” What’s next for the Branson backed brand? “We’re focusing all our attention on the new range. The instant response to this product range and its functionality has been brilliant and, based on this, we will be expanding the color tones and styles of this range.”

The Six Most Iconic Watch Models of all Time | BY BARBARA PALUMBO
Whether one is a watch enthusiast or not, there are certain watches that when worn are easy to recognize, which is part of what makes them iconic in the first place. And while some may associate price tags with popularity, there is a reality that not every sought-after timepiece worn by the 1% is out of monetary reach of the middle class, especially now with vintage and pre-owned watches in such demand throughout the world. But which watches might be considered the most historically relevant in design terms? We’ve chronologically collected what we believe to be a solidly “Substantial Six.”

THE ROYAL OAK BY AUDEMARS PIGUET In the midst of what is now known as the “quartz crisis” of the 1960s and 1970s, a handful of Swiss watch manufacturers stood their ground and continued making mechanical timepieces, with a few even challenging the norms of traditional watch design. Audemars Piguet were a disrupter of their era when – with the help of Swiss artist and watch designer Gérald Genta – the brand launched their Royal Oak collection at the Baselworld Watch and Jewellery Fair in 1972. But it wasn’t just the aesthetics of the watch that separated it from every other watch design that had existed thus far; it was the fact that it was also the first stainless steel watch marketed to the public as a luxury timepiece. Today, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is available in a variety of metals, dial colors, finishes, sizes, complications, and price points, making it wildly popular with both watch enthusiasts and novices. “There is a sense of comfort that comes with iconic yet simple designs in any product,” says Hind Seddiqi, Director General of Dubai Watch Week. “The fact that the Royal Oak is so iconic, yet still looks great with the use of different materials, is proof that it will continue to be a sought-after watch.”
THE TANK WATCH BY CARTIER Designed by Louis Cartier in 1917, the Cartier Tank watch’s signature style was inspired by an actual early 20th century French tank: the Renault FT17, which also started its service in 1917 and is often referred to by historians as the world’s first modern tank. The watch’s case and outer sides – including the lugs – were constructed to resemble both the tank’s treads and the cockpit, giving the watch a shape that was neither fully rectangular nor fully square. In production for over 100 years, the Cartier Tank has been worn in various models by everyone from dignitaries like Diana, Princess of Wales, and former first lady Michelle Obama, to Hollywood stars such as Clark Gable, Fred As-taire, and more recently, Rami Malek.

THE PATEK PHILIPPE NAUTILUS In 1976, after 137 years of manufacturing prestigious and often highly-complicated Swiss timepieces known the world over for their quality and longevity, Patek Philippe launched its first-ever sport which they decided to call, Nautilus. With a case shape designed by Gérald Genta and in-spired by a ship’s porthole, the Nautilus took its name from the submarine in Jules Verne’s bestselling novel, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. However, the design and name of the watch weren’t the only characteristics tying it to the sea. The piece – crafted in steel – was also water-resistant to 120 meters, which for the mid-70s was a substantial depth. In fact, one of the original print advertisements for the Patek Philippe Nautilus read, “Nautilus, with its hand-finished Patek Philippe self-winding movement, will accompany you when you dive, or when the occasion is formal or fes-tive, or when you set out to slay dragons in the boardroom.” To this day, the Nautilus continues to slay every other sport watch in its path. It is one of the most iconic watches ever to hit the market and is as recognizable now as it has ever been, thus making it – like the five watches written about above – one of the most iconic watch models of all time.
THE ROLEX SUBMARINER In the early 1950s, Rene P. Jeanneret – a member of the board of directors at Rolex and an amateur diver – ex-pressed to Rolex’s founder, Hans Wilsdorf, his interest in a true dive watch. Wilsdorf ’s further vision of producing a watch that would be able to reach depths of 100 meters, while successfully maintaining its water resistance, came to fruition in 1953 and was eventually showcased to the world at the Baselworld fair in 1954. Over the last sixty-six years, the Rolex Submariner has graced the wrists of dive legends such as Jacques Cousteau (who wore the model shortly after its initial introduction), but the appeal of the watch isn’t limited to those in the dive community, even with its screw-down crown and unidirec-tional rotatable bezel. “The Sub can go almost anywhere and is tough enough to experience just about anything,” states vintage Rolex expert Eric Wind. “It is the quintes-sential sport watch, in my opinion.” Favored among men and women alike, the Submariner has been spotted over the years on celebrities such as Sean Connery, Al Pacino, and Sharon Stone.

THE JAEGER-LECOULTRE REVERSO The story of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso dates back to the early 1930s when a Swiss businessman by the name of César de Trey listened to a complaint by a polo player in India about his watch crystal (then made of glass) being smashed during play by a polo mallet. The player challenged de Trey – who was also a brand associate of what was then known as simply “LeCoultre” – to create a watch that wouldn’t get broken during matches, but that would still allow players to see the time. The businessman brought the idea to Jacques David LeCoultre, before enlisting the help of French designer René-Alfred Chauvet, and in 1931 the dual-sided timepiece was born. Today, the Reverso remains the most popular model in the Jaeger-LeCoultre line largely because of its history, elegant esthetics, and gender-neutral design.
THE OMEGA SPEEDMASTER With a case designed in 1957 by Claude Baillod and orig-inally intended as a chronograph that would appeal to the racing community, the original Omega Speedmaster – model CK 2915 – contained the Caliber 321 movement, originally developed in 1946. But the popularity of the Speedmaster didn’t hit the next level until the brand’s as-sociation with NASA, eventually leading to its permanent place in history as the first watch to ever go to the moon. The relative affordability of the Speedmaster is one of the reasons the watch remains as sought after today as it was in years prior, and with hashtags such as “#SpeedyTues-day” (wherein owners of the model showcase their personal Speedmasters on Instagram every Tuesday), and dedicated fan pages on various other social media, the watch’s favora-bility shows no signs of slowing down.

Golden Door The Most Exclusive Spa Retreat | BY JARONE ASHKENAZI
L
ocated in between Temecula and San Diego in the hills of San Marcos, CA, Golden Door is an iconic wellness retreat for enduring excellence. Originally opened in 1958 by Deborah and Edmond Szekely, who also opened world’s first destination health escape, Rancho La Puerta, in Baja California (also founded by the Szekely’s), Golden Door’s humble beginnings as a health and wellness spa quickly gained star appeal with the likes of starlets such as Elizabeth Taylor and Zsa Zsa Gabor frequenting destination health escape.
personalized fitness, spa, and nutrition programs, thoughtfully designed to meet the specific goals and needs of each individual. The Door became the smarter and more refined option to the world’s first destination health escape to Rancho La Puerta and is one of the only perfectly zen structures built in North America, modeled after a traditional Japanese Ryokan. It is from the ancient Japanese honjin inns famed for refreshing weary travelers with sublime personal service, that Golden Door ascribes its mantra of the beginning of each guests’ personal transformation.
The all-inclusive resort accepts only 40 guests each week to ensure every guest receives the VIP treatment. As such, the staff to guest ratio of 4:1 is designed to meet every need of their guests without interruption or delay. THE SAN CLEMENTE PALACE KEMPINSKI Venice‘s Most Luxurious Island Resort | BY DEVE SANFORD
Venice, a magical floating city immersed in its own historic landscape transforms into the globe’s ultimate contemporary art destination during La Biennale di Venezia. Celebrating its 58th year, the six-month-long exhibition entitled, “May You Live in Interesting Times,” invited patrons to reflect and be open to new perspectives. With 79 international artists, 90 national pavilions, more than 20 pop-up events around the city and inundation of Venetian tourists, it can be a little overwhelming trying to navigate what to do, much less where to stay in order to make the very best of the Biennale experience. The perfect locale to immerse visitors in both the art and architecture of this iconic city is the private island resort of the San Clemente Palace Kempinski. The Venetian luxury resort uniquely located on its own private island just ten minutes away from St. Mark’s Square possesses an impressive heritage shaped by centuries of Venetian history. First settled in 1131, Venetian merchant Pietro Gattilesso funded the construction of a church and hospice for pilgrims and soldiers making their way to the Holy Land. Until the 15th century, San Clemente Island was run by Augustine canon when thanks to the donations by wealthy Venetians, the monastery was enlarged and the church restored. Between the 15th and 16th centuries, the property became known as the “gateway to Venice” and it became the standard practice that the Doge’s ceremonial barge would sail to the island to meet dis-tinguished and official guests. One of the most interesting bits of information about the island is that from 1873-1992, it housed a hospital that closed its doors in 1992. Today, the former monastery is managed by the Kempinski Group, which reopened the hotel as San Clemente Palace Kempinski in March of 2016. The

YACHTS
There are Yachts, and Then There are Superyachts! | BY RAJ GILL
B
efore the decade ends let’s take a last look at the four superyachts that made it onto our radar.
Superyachts take sailing to a whole other level, the standards and specs on-board are unique, something which is reflected in the hefty price tag attached to these playthings designed with Billionaires in mind. And if you are a billionaire worth your salt, then 2019 has been about four superyachts, in particular, the Sunseeker 161, the new long-range Superyacht by Dominator, La Datcha’s 252-foot superyacht and of course Oceanco’s 350-foot long Black Pearl. So if you have a few hundred million dollars to spare, read on. Let’s start with the latest offering from superstar yacht makers Sunseeker. Where Sunseeker leads others to follow, they have delivered 137 yachts in the over 100ft range since the year 2000. 2019 saw the company launch the new 161-foot long Superyacht, the largest and most extravagant in their range to date. Encompassing a new tri-deck which stretches to 50 metres. On-board the standard guest configuration is for up to ten guests in five cabins. However the overall layout can accommodate up to twelve guests, this is dependent on the layout chosen. Sunseeker’s renowned Bespoke Service ensures that the billionaire’s needs are all met. And their main goal is to offer clients even larger superyachts built-in metal. The important factors when choosing the right superyacht are generally the on-board space, flexibility and of course speed. Enjoyment can be enhanced by maximizing the volume and providing compelling features. The main deck is home to a plunge pool and a generously sized beach club that creates an incredible space for a day near the water. The first Sunseeker 161 was sold in October at the Monaco Yacht Show. It will be built by ICON Yachts in Holland and delivered to the owner in September 2022. The unique selling point for the new long-range Superyacht by Dominator is the fact that you can sail from London to New York on one tank. Inspired by their

20th anniversary the Dominator team literally decided to push the boat out! And come up with a new concept, the new 42M Ilumen flagship yacht. The debut date is expected to be around 2022 with a grand unveiling at the Cannes Boat Show. It has already been seized-up by a German client who prefers to stay anonymous, and is under construction at an Italian shipyard. Accommodating up to eight guests across four staterooms, there is a lifestyle & detox area, a yoga studio, Technogym, a hot tub, a plunge pool, and no superyacht is complete without a dedicated smoothie bar and a hookah lounge! The engine room can be found on the lower deck; however it is like no other engine room you will have seen, as Dominator has installed thermal and sound-damping insulation to keep the heat and noise behind closed engineroom doors. The innovative technical features and state-of-the-art design methods ensure that the Ilumen is in a class of its own, compared to what is currently available in the superyacht market. Head of hydrodynamics & engineering, Andrea Agrusta and Head of design & styling Alberto Mancini set themselves a nearly impossible task, to make this 42M length yacht with beauty, functionality, and efficiency and unlike any other that has gone before. It will be the first motor yacht of its size and class with the transatlantic capability and will be offered in semi-displacement and displacement hulls. Currently being built in the Netherlands, the new longrange La Datcha, a 252-foot superyacht will be delivered to its owner Russian banker Oleg Tinkov in autumn 2020. The superyacht is part of Damen’s SeaXplorer series. La Datcha’s unique selling point is that it will be the world’s first purpose-built icebreaker yacht compliant with the International Maritime Organisation’s Polar Code. Being IMO Polar Code compliant ensures that Tinkov will be able to undertake major long-distance expeditions. The 25 crew superyacht has a top speed of 14.5kn. La Datcha can break through 16-inch-thick ice and maintain autonomy at sea for up to 40 days. Tinkov played an integral role in the design and customization of this
SeaXplorer SX77 model and his passion for adventuring is reflected in the ship’s extraordinary equipment inventory: two helicopters with helideck and hangar, two snowmobiles, a submersible, a dive center with a decompression chamber and several tenders, including two RIBs. The three-person submersible, is a chance to explore beneath the water’s surface, giving you a unique insight into a secret subterranean world. La Datcha has an ice-classed steel hull and stretches out over six decks. The yacht can accommodate up to twelve guests across six cabins. Relaxation can be taken in the Jacuzzi on the deck or in the wellness center which has a Turkish hammam, or the dedicated treatment room. Fitness is of utmost importance to Tinkov and the yacht will have a fully-serviced gym complete with sea-views and a fully-certified dive center. La Datcha is being built to withstand the harshest of environments and reach the most remote of destinations in utmost safety, which is the main attraction for Adventurer Tinkov. And last but not least is Oceanco’s 350-foot long Black Pearl, which is said to be one of the fastest superyachts ever to be built, can reach 17.5knots under the power of the twin 12VM72 MTU diesel engines. The three 230foot-tall Dynarig carbon masts designed by Dykstra Naval Architects, accommodate 31,000 square feet of sail— that translates to an exciting speed of 30 knots. Full sail can be achieved in just seven minutes at the touch of a button. Steel and aluminum were the two key materials used to build the 50ft wide yacht. Nigel Gee is responsible for the yacht’s hybrid propulsion system as well as the waste heat recovery system. Accommodating up to 12 guests across six staterooms, including a master suite, two VIP suites, two guest cabins and a full-beam beach club which quite handily can be transformed into a cinema. The boat was completed in late 2016 and after rigorous tests, it was delivered to its owner Russian Billionaire, Oleg Burglakov in March 2018, with a price tag of $200million (US dollars).

Zozibini Tunzi | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS
When 26-year old South African-born Zozibini Tunzi stood on stage at the Miss Universe contest holding hands with fellow contestant Miss Puerto Rico, Madison Anderson, this shy woman had no idea that her life would change forever. At that moment, when Steve Harvey called ‘South Africa’, Zozi, as she is affectionately known, received her crown and sash, walking the runway with the most intense amount of pride. Upscale Living magazine caught up with Zozi during media week and found out that this natural beauty is adamant to dispel the myth that she is an ‘underwhelming’ Miss Universe. CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR WIN AS MISS UNIVERSE 2019! AS A FELLOW COUNTRYWOMAN, YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW PROUD THE ENTIRE SOUTH AFRICAN NATION IS. CAN YOU RECALL WHAT WENT THROUGH YOUR MIND AT THE EXACT MOMENT WHEN STEVE HARVEY CALLED OUT YOUR NAME? Standing there with the other contestants and everybody had trained so hard to be there, some people had been working on it all their lives. Where you’re standing there, you want it so much. I felt such a sense of pride when the winner was announced, the name of your country is called out, not your name. With the amazing support of South Africans, I felt like I won the title for everyone. WHO DESIGNED YOUR BEAUTIFUL DRESS?
THAT MUST BE AN INCREDIBLE FEELING?! Yes it is. Those women are so different from me and from each other. There’s so much that you can learn from each other and your character. IT MUST HAVE BEEN AMAZING TO HAVE YOUR FAMILY THERE. They were cheering me on so much; it was my parents first time overseas. I’m hoping they can come back to enjoy a family vacation. BORN IN THE EASTERN CAPE, WHAT ARE YOUR FONDEST CHILDHOOD MEMORIES? Mostly spending time with family, my grandmother and my sisters cooling each other down in the summertime with the hosepipe (she laughs). YOU LATER MOVED TO CAPE TOWN TO STUDY AT CAPE PENINSULA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY WHERE YOU GRADUATED WITH A BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN PUBLIC RELATIONS AND IMAGE MANAGEMENT. I ASSUME YOU WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE THIS CAREER PATH ONCE YOUR REIGN IS OVER?
SPOTLIGHT ON GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE, FEMICIDE AND GENDER INEQUALITY. WHY THIS SPECIFICALLY? Living in South Africa, Gender-Based Violence and Femicide is worryingly rampant. I also came to realize that this isn’t confined to South Africa alone, it’s a global issue, which we need to address. YOU SPOKE ABOUT BREAKING BEAUTY BOUNDARIES. A lot of women of color have experienced racism so stepping into the beauty pageant industry, I was subjected to a lot of cyberbullying. I LOVE THE WAY YOU EMBRACE YOUR NATURAL BEAUTY. I’m so glad I got to communicate the message when I was asked whether I would be wearing a wig or a hairpiece instead of showing off my natural hair. It’s sad that I have to experience and explain to people why I wear my hair the way I do. We act as role models for young girls and we should all be able to feel comfortable in our own skin, no matter what color your skin is, even more so the texture of your hair. IS THIS YOUR FIRST TRIP TO THE BIG APPLE?
I would like to continue in that field, but I will mainly focus on my Miss Universe title as one never knows what the future might bring.
I had been to NYC earlier this year for Fashion Week. It was, however, my first time to Atlanta.
YOU GOT A TWEET FROM OPRAH AND RECOGNITION FROM OTHER STRONG WOMEN, INCLUDING MICHELLE OBAMA.
A YEAR IN NEW YORK CITY! THAT MUST BE SO EXCITING!
A South African designer by the name of Biji la Maison de Couture.
It was quite incredible to see these women you look up to all your life giving you a shoutout. It was such a special moment and what I enjoyed most about is that they recognized what I said in terms of leadership.
YOU’RE ONE OF ONLY THREE SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN TO WIN THE TITLE.

FINCA LA DONAIRA Absolute Peace in Beautiful Andalucia | BY ADAM JACOT DE BOINOD
W
hen arriving late at night, it’s always worth the suspended joy of opening, like a present, the shutters the next morning. In comes the sun over a clear blue sky above these terracotta roofs of Ronda. With Ronda what’s so special is that it’s that rarity: a European city center from which I could see the fields beyond. With the panorama from the Palacio Mondragon gardens over to Hoya de los Molinos, I relished the utter peace and quiet, the lemon trees and the contours of differing shades of brown and green, a patchwork of tilled fields, like an early Miro landscape or one by Ivor Hitchings. I could actually hear the bees hum and the dogs bark, see the swallows flit and hear the church bells toll, as the sound in the silence traveled steeply, and as the vaporizing flowers gave off their aromatic fragrance beneath the heat. The next day, and for something of a treat, I went to Bardal Restaurant (www.restaurantebardal.com), which gained its One Michelin Star with Chef Benito Gomez in November 2017 soon after opening. This mecca for gourmets has a thoroughly modern, pristine, neutral and zen interior. Every course comes as a surprise with its own theatrical presentation. The curtains have tassels, the waiters are almost military in their uniforms and the food is enhanced in grandeur by arriving in boxes. The local wines included ‘Chartogne-Taillet Sainte Anne’ champagne, ‘Fino del Puerto Lustau Single Cask’ sherry, ‘Attis Albarino Rias Baixas’ and ‘Chardonnay F. Schatz". My "bouche" was certainly amused.
Driving through the Old Town, over the bridge that spans the vertiginous gorge and past the famous bullring, I then took the short journey through to the verdant park of Grazalema Natural Park. It was full of cork tress stripped of their bark to expose rich copper-colored trunks and offer a visual beauty all of their own. Undulating mountain slopes, cork and olive plantations, oaks and fir trees. Whitewashed villages with window grilles and narrow cobbled alleys. This is Andalucia whose very name instantly conjures up an alluring sense of exoticism and adventure. I had arrived at the Finca La Donaira (www. ladonaira.com) near to Montecorto. The Finca is a haven for those attracted to walking, riding, hiking, and wellness. It’s set high above the plains overlooking the Peñón de El Gastor, which lords over the sleepy village of the same name. In view are speckled plantations of olive trees and oaks generating many an acorn while white birds rest in harmony beside large Pajuna cattle. Bought by an Austrian in 2004, it’s been a hotel since 2015, with April to September the busy time. There’s golden yellow sand in the forecourt in reference to the local arenas (interestingly from the Latin word for sand). The furniture comes from Lille, and beyond the roaring fire and grand piano there are large panes of glass from which to view the changes in weather over the hills and valleys.

To eat I sat across a table of international clientele as the cook came over to tell us “what we were about to receive” from the amazing produce of the Biodynamic philosophy practiced with its Rudolf Steiner connection. There are vegetable gardens and fruit orchards, vineyards, olive trees and beehives. The farm produces much of its own organic wine, olive oil and honey. At evening the pathways are lit to expose colorful lizards and the avenues of aromatic lavender. My yurt was truly a glamping experience as I practiced round space living furnished with a palatial bed, butterfly chairs and an imaginative set of windows each with gorgeous views. The Finca is full of projects with a specialist dedicated to each. Seamus the horse whisperer attends to over seventy of the renown and imperial Lusitano breed glistening in their fully exercised glory. Andrew the vegetable gardener has planted what Peter Rabbit would have coveted, vivid plants in full health freed from insects lured away by interspersed colourful flowers. And Gerhard shared my delight in showing me round his medicinal herb garden. Here amongst the lychee tomato, earl grey and citrus bergamot, were the exotic names of hot lips sage (interestingly the same family as the chia seed), chewing gum plant and, ‘jambu’ the electric flower buzzing in the mouth like space dust. There are now ‘bee beds’ for meditation and future projects include more land to till for hay for the horses, beehives to rent and extract your own honey, and an expansion of the vegetable garden for deliveries. I was lucky enough for my stay to coincide with an in-house flamenco performance. Flamenco comes from a hybrid of local folklore, gypsies and Muslim chants where the dancer and singer take the lead from the guitarist, like a pianist from a conductor. I was ready and eager to be swept away by its dramatic flourish and thrilling beat. Goosebumps appeared on me straight from the ‘duende’, the magic and life force that was transmitting telepathically. The female dancer lost no time in getting fully immersed. Her arms were held aloft
and her head thrown defiantly back. Then she curved her arms round her body, bent her elbow and hammered her heels remorselessly home into the floorboards. On such a small stage one false step and you’re either flat on your face or else in the audience. All part of the strident act of strutting and stamping from a proud carriage and intense demeanour. Across the Arts, it’s rare for women to have the space to express their emotional gamut: be it anger, hate, aggression, longing or desire. It commanded as well as demanded my attention. TIPS For guidebooks I recommend Pallas Guides’ “Andalucia” by Michael Jacobs and The DK Eyewitness Travel Guide. More local walking detail is to be found in Cicerone’s “Walking the mountains of Ronda and Grazalema” by Guy Hunter-Watts. As for getting into the local spirit, Google an image of El Jaleo, the large painting by John Singer Sargent in Boston, depicting a Spanish Gypsy dancer. Read “Driving Over Lemons: An Optimist in Andalucia” by Chris Stewart (the ex-Genesis drummer). Track down the video of Bizet’s Carmen starring Placido Domingo to see the Ronda bullring. Watch a Youtube rendering of ‘Solea De Córdoba’ by the top flamenco guitarist. Paco Peña. Listen to ‘Concierto de Aranjuez’ the guitar concerto by Joaquín Rodrigo. As it summons up the landscape of wavy hills and crooked olive trees and, to my imagination, of being carried away on a horse on a humid, sultry evening to who knows where. Luis Cernuda, the renown Spanish poet, said “If I was asked what single word sums up the thousand sensations, suggestions and possibilities that unite the radiant surface of Andalucia, I would say: happiness”. With the clearest of blue skies, fruits aplenty, a phenomenal historic cultural diversity, fabulous rural landscapes and an attitude of ‘mañana, mañana’ (‘tomorrow, tomorrow’) it’s hard to disagree.

Exceptional Stay At Excellence
Punta Cana and El Carmen Resorts | BY ALINA ROSA LEYVA

ove the feeling of the finest golden sand between your toes? Look no further than the exceptional Excellence Punta Cana and El Carmen in the Dominican Republic, for adults only.
Synonymous with the most upscale Caribbean experience, The Excellence Collection created a benchmark for luxury almost two decades ago, combined with personalized service and astonishing moments at their resorts in the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Jamaica. An intricate focus by each resort on why you are really here, makes this a once-in-alifetime experience, where you are able to enjoy what really matters to you, giving you the complete freedom to be true to yourself and focus on the all-inclusive activities you appreciate. Not being forced to do activities you wouldn’t naturally delight in makes for a wonderful change in essential enjoyment. Brimming with excitement to visit not one, but two Excellence resorts, I arrived at my first Excellence resort – Punta Cana, after being collected at Punta Cana International Airport by Seasons Tours for my private transfer in style to Excellence Punta Cana. After a smooth journey and check-in at the resort, my day is spent at leisure in the wonderful surroundings, which includes my Excellence Club Honeymoon Suite with Private Pool Ocean View. At 950 sq. ft. in size, it comes with the most spectacular views over the Caribbean! Situated on the ground floor, I can open the doors to let the ocean breeze in while I make my way to my private pool.

I love the easygoing atmosphere at Punta Cana, where I feasted on the most delicious breakfast at The Kitchen Table, serving the most delectable pastries. At Magna Club restaurant, I enjoyed a twelve-hour marinated Ribeye on the grill, seasoned with aromatic herbs, onion compote with balsamic vinegar, garnished with gratin Dauphinois, and the perfect accompaniment – a glass of champagne. Making me feel like a brand new person, my two hours at The Miilé Spa, included my very first Aqua Wellness treatment, followed by a Native Healing massage. Enveloped in nature, with the sun, air, earth and water forming an essential part of the Spa experience, Miilé is the best retreat where repose happens spontaneously. Wellness of mind, body and spirit is at the core of The Miilé Spa, with the conclusion being absolute relaxation. After checking out at Punta Cana, my next destination is Excellence El Carmen, which delights with its contemporary chic design, merged with distinctive, spacious high-end suite concepts. My Excellence Club Beachfront Honeymoon Swim-up suite is sized at 1,100 sq. ft., with separate bedroom and living room areas, oversized jacuzzi, expansive terrace with comfortable lounge furniture, direct access to a semiprivate pool area, exclusive benefits for staying in a Excellence Club suite category and did I mention the oceanfront views?!
EL CARMEN
One of the greatest joys in my life is spending time in a temperate climate, and here at El Carmen, the balminess that emanates from the sun and the calming sounds of the Caribbean Sea is the perfect place to experience the incredible hospitality of the Dominican people. Caribbean bliss meets the Atlantic with palm-fringed beaches and seclusion is a way of life. Guests are encouraged to leave their wallet and their worries behind, which is exactly what I did.

There are so many dining options at El Carmen; I chose to have dinner at The Lobster House, where I ordered the Lobster bisque with Rouille drops, a steamed Lobster with garlic mojo sauce, mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables. Dinner was fantastic at The Grill restaurant, where I enjoyed the Tagliatelle pasta with prosciutto ham, Mozzarella cheese and fresh tomatoes in a creamy pesto sauce, and Flank Steak with green chimichurri, and a side order or rustic mashed potatoes with garlic & creamed spinach with caramelized onions. After this indulgence, I didn’t think I had space for anything else, but the sun, fresh air, the swimming and walking along the beach had made me so hungry! The Flavor Market is a great place to stop and grab a quick bite. I was excited to see a favorite of mine on the menu, so I always opted for the ham croquettes tapas or Cold Cut plate, consisting of garlic paprika, chorizo, cured pork loin, cured pork sausage, and cured ham, always accompanied by a glass of tasty Malbec.
PUNTA CANA
Las Olas was wonderful, located right across the beach where you can sit and enjoy a nice glass of wine or champagne, with a snack if you’re hungry. The Martini Bar is beautiful with its stunning décor and friendly staff. I regret not being able to experience dining at all the restaurants in each resort, but I’m sure they are top-notch quality. Having stayed at both Punta Cana and El Carmen, I can only describe it as outstanding. With luxury amenities, welcoming staff who treated me like family and catered for my every need, I can easily say that my greatest desire is to head back to the magnificent Dominican Republic to experience another exceptional stay at Excellence Resorts.

Makanyi Private Game Lodge The Lion Sleeps Tonight | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS PHOTOGRAPHS COURTESY OF MAKANYI PRIVATE GAME LODGE AND BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS

ituated in the southern sector of South Africa’s premier game viewing area, the Timbavati Game Reserve, Makanyi Private Game Lodge provides the most magnificent accommodation, highlighted by the most phenomenal animal sightings. Some places just get it right, and Makanyi is one of them. When Jessica Gold dipped her toe in South Africa for the first time in 2013, she surrendered her heart and fell in love. The subject of her adoration was not as one might have imagined but does get her pulse racing every time, she speaks so passionately about it. “The narrative of Makanyi is one of those storybook tales, the only difference is that this one is true,” Jessica tells me with a glisten in her eyes over coffee at Makanyi. “I was born and raised in Italy by a British father and an Italian mother. When I was 18, I moved around a lot and lived in nine different countries. For me, home is where the heart is.” Having no plans over the 2013 Easter holidays and with her son, William, visiting his dad in America, a childhood friend got in touch with Jessica and suggested a visit to South Africa. She immediately agreed and her love affair with South Africa began the moment the plane’s wheels touched the tarmac. “Everyone told me I had to see Cape Town, so we decided to visit the port city for a few days, and it was indeed the most breath-taking destination. We also visited a lion park in Johannesburg and being a tourist, I took some pictures and sent them home to my son and my dad who were amazed and proposed we go back and see it together.” 85 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | BEST OF LUXURY 2020

Jessica’s next idea was to go on safari, which she embarked on in May 2013 with William accompanying her, only a month after her initial visit. During this holiday she fell even further in love with the African bush, so much so that she knew this was where she could put into practice her hospitality degree from Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne in Switzerland. “I never really just wanted to have a hotel in Rome or London to apply the skills I learnt while studying, but it dawned on me that here, in South Africa, I could put it to good use should I be able to acquire my own bush lodge. When I visited again on a solo trip in August, I convinced myself to go outside of my comfort zone and to turn my holiday into a business opportunity. The adage of ‘visiting nice places and then going back to reality’ rang so true that I knew the time was right to turn my dreams into reality.” Once back in London, Jessica began the arduous process of finding the right property as bush lodges don’t come up for sale very often. With the help of a friend, she stumbled upon a private lodge in the Timbavati, and not knowing the area at all, put to good use the contacts she had made during her visits to guide her as to whether or not this was a viable option. They all went to see it together and concurred that this would be the perfect place for Jessica to establish what is now ranked by many as one of the top safari lodges in South Africa. I always feel incredibly privileged visiting different destinations, and a bush lodge is one of the places I can never get enough of. When I hear that a 2-night stay at Makanyi is confirmed, I can hardly contain my excitement as the vastness of the Timbavati is something that is difficult to put into words. I am collected at the gate to the Timbavati Game Reserve in Makanyi’s own, first of a kind in South Africa, Electric Safari Vehicle, making the game viewing experience a lot more serene and sustainable to the precious bush environment. My home is suite no 4, with all the luxuries you can possibly think of – a heavenly four-poster bed with draped mosquito netting, a large bathroom with tub, shower and double vanities, a lounge area with a fireplace and an outside area with a great view of the watering hole and it’s many wildlife visitors. I’m within short walking distance from the main lodge area where meals are served on the deck while again watching an ever-changing parade of animals’ meander past. Chef Amos perfects every meal at Makanyi with so much flair and the freshest ingredients, the
only problem is overindulgence. Who can say no to the most deliciously prepared gourmet beef burgers with French fries, delectable scallops, tender cuts of meat and mouth-watering desserts? TRAVEL myriad of animals that inhabit this part of the Timbavati. We had only just left the property when we spot a male and female giraffe quenching their thirst at the watering hole. If seeing the Big 5 is something you would like to experience, Makanyi offers this and so much more. The sightings my fellow guests and I enjoyed included a young female leopard, the Avoca pride of 19 lions, the Xikukutso male lions, ele-phants by the dozen, enormous breeding herds of buffalos and not forgetting the plethora of birds, reptiles and insects. The nocturnal sound of lions roaring and finding them the following day is a very special occurrence. As Jessica so eloquently put it, Makanyi’s attraction is not only the animals, it is the exclusivi-ty, the homely feeling, the great service without it being stuffy. I admire her leap of faith in creating this wonderful environment for her and her son, from big city life to having a life in the bush. Her parting words resonate – “It completely resets me. When I’m here, I take in every sunrise and every sunset. I appreciate it, it grounds me.”
As I pack to return home after a wonderful time spent at Makanyi, I relish the heart-warming memories I can share with my family back in Cape Town. After saying my goodbyes, my road transfer takes me from Timbavati through the town of Hoedspruit and delivers me at Hoedspruit Airport where my direct flight back to Cape Town is on Airlink’s glorious Embraer E-Jet. As we taxi for take-off, I see another Airlink E-190 on the runway waiting to offload passengers, filled with safari-goers who will undoubt-edly enjoy their time in this special part of the bush. *** Views expressed are the author’s own. Thank you to Julie Hedley from Julie Hedley PR for making my arrangements and to Jessica for allowing me to share a piece of paradise you have created.

Matetsi Victoria Falls An Oasis of Sophistication | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS Photographs courtesy of Matetsi Victoria Falls and by Heléne Ramackers
U
rbanites will rejoice when setting foot at the ultra-chic and polished Matetsi Victoria Falls, comprising 123,500 acres of wildlife reserve and nine miles of river frontage. This familyowned property is an oasis of sophistication, coupled with an innate commitment to the natural stretch of surroundings and the animals that frequent it. At 08:30 on a Monday morning, my daughter and I depart from Cape Town International Airport to Victoria Falls Airport in Zimbabwe on the sleek and stylish Airlink Embraer E190. Airlink’s direct route between these two iconic destinations has become so popular that the 98-seater Embraer ERJ 190 AR with its two seating classes is the perfect mode of transport, getting passengers there in only 2 hours and 45 minutes. We are collected at Victoria Falls Airport in an airconditioned vehicle for our 45-minute road transfer to Matetsi Victoria Falls and are warmly welcomed by the staff at the lodge. Camp Manager Leanne shows us to our impressive suite, with its congruent view of the Zambezi, which will be our 5-star habitation for the next three nights. Our table is set up alongside the river and head chef Shane ensures that our lunch is a delightful indulgence. We feast on the most delicious gourmet burgers with French fries and conclude our meal with a delectable fruit pavlova. Back at our room, we take in the incredible design and architecture that is distinct in each of the 18 rooms at Matetsi Victoria Falls. You have a choice between the Eastern or Western guest area, spread out all along the river for about half a mile, with nine guest suites on either side of a dining area, as well as a the added benefit of a recreation area, featuring a lap pool, gym, spa, library, gift shop and wine cellar. Matetsi Victoria Falls is privately owned and independently run, with the passion of the Gardiner family coming through in all aspects of the guest experience. Driven by their desire to showcase the beauty of their home country, Zimbabwe, the family’s understanding of what works for a luxury safari lodge in a private concession has been met with triumphant accolades from visitors and the industry alike. 89 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | BEST OF LUXURY 2020

Sara Gardiner explains: “When we got involved with the Matetsi Victoria Falls property in 2015, we realized we had to seek out the right architectural designer to let the property become a beacon of refinement whilst keeping our footprint as light as possible. We found the perfect fit – a young female Zimbabwean architecture designer Kerry van Leenhoff who heads up her own firm, Form Studio Design.” Kerry was given creative freedom to design a suitable structure for Matetsi Victoria Falls, with the only guideline that no thatch be used. Fashioning the freedom of time and space for Matetsi Victoria Falls guests is something Kerry achieved and when the Gardiner family saw the renders she drew, they knew she was on the right track. With her concept of Life on the River, she accomplished this with remarkable details, such as hanging mokoros (dug-out canoes) at the entrance to the restaurant. In the suites, 18 individual pieces of art by Zimbabwean artist Helen Teede form a map of Matetsi Private Game Reserve when pieced together. Given free reign as to what she wanted to do, the size of art, the color she would use, what textures, tones, mediums and materials, it turned out perfectly and in great complement to the interiors done by Kerry. There is so much intricate detail throughout the lodge: the screens in the dining area are woven screens done in the style of basket weaving, while the down lighters are styled as clay pots. In the bathrooms, stone sculpture basins give a nod to the Shona culture, whereas the copper bar (copper is found naturally in Zimbabwe) has ‘petals’, making it look like the scales on a pangolin. “The old lodge was constructed in a very different style,” Sara reminisces. “Essentially, we tried to use as much of the original foundation as possible so that we don’t impact the surrounding environment at all. Many of the columns are original, the footprint is original and so are the fireplaces. What’s wonderful with the way that Kerry designed it, is that she constructed it very much in nature, with an indoor / outdoor space.” Each suite opens up to a riverine view, with floor to ceiling doors letting in loads of natural light. Floors are made of tiny quartz petals, coated with resin and cover not only the bedroom through to the bathroom, but the outdoor spaces as well, creating a unit that feels like one beautiful flowing space. Every suite has its own plunge pool, perfect for a cooling dip on those scorching summer days. Our pool received lots of visitors, from birds, to warthog and the cutest bushbuck.
“It’s about taking time, sitting on the banks of the Zambezi River,” Sara reiterates, “cooling down in your plunge pool while enjoying the outdoor terrace area. I’ve had a few people mention that the terrace is their favorite place in the world for an afternoon siesta. I absolutely love the bush, but also sitting at one of the dining tables, watching the birds go by or the water monitors come out of the

river. We have clawless otters that live in the water and there is an overwhelming feeling of being connected with nature at Matetsi Victoria Falls.” Days at Matetsi Victoria Falls are best spent relaxing in your suite with all the superfluity and space you can possibly imagine, or on the back of a game drive vehicle exploring the vastness of Matetsi Private Game Reserve, which we willingly do. Our guide, Trymore, and tracker Crawford prove to be the perfect combination of knowledge and wit to make a drive loads of fun. We spot lots of giraffes and elephants aplenty on our drives, as well as very large troops of baboons drinking from the fringes of the Zambezi. Impalas and kudus go about their business foraging for seed pods. Late afternoon game drives yield the most spectacular sunsets and the appearance of nocturnal animals – a hyena with three very young cubs, leaving her den-site on the open plains to confuse any would-be scavengers hoping to harm her offspring. On our last morning, we take in the incredible sighting of two lion brothers having a nap in the tall grass. With the close proximity of the Victoria Falls, a visit to Zimbabwe would not
be complete without seeing the wonder of ‘The Smoke That Thunders’. Every viewpoint showcases a different angle of the Falls, all of them breathtaking in their own right. Water levels rise and fall seasonally and it’s especially magnificent to see the bare rockface as it has been sculpted by the cascading waters throughout the years. A favorite remains the sight and sound of the water tumbling over the edge to reveal a variety of rainbows. Returning after a day of exploration or simply indulging in the joys of the bush, coming back to Matetsi Victoria Falls has a definitive tranquility about it. Whether it’s the exclusivity, the peace and quiet, or the Matetsi magic Sara speaks of. The Zambezi is good for the soul. Even more so, Matetsi Victoria Falls induces a feeling that is difficult to describe. Whatever it is, it’s worthwhile to soak it all in and believe me when I say, you’ll go away feeling revived and ready to face anything. Until your next visit. *** Views expressed are the author’s own. Thank you to Melissa Dive from Perowne International for arranging our stay and to Sara Gardiner and the staff at Matetsi Victoria Falls for their kind hospitality.

ARVA At The AMAN VENICE Embracing Italys Rich Culinary History | BY DEVE SANFORD
Italians are deeply proud of their relationship with cuisine and in Italy good food is fundamental. It differs from region to region, but one commonality that is evident from coast to coast of this boot shaped country, is that the preparation of food is just as important as its consumption. The Aman Venice pays homage to this rich culinary tradition with Arva, a dining concept brought to life by Executive Chef Dario Ossola with signature dishes by Creative Consultant Davide Oldani. Meaning “cultivated land” in Latin, Arva’s vision is to remain consistent with this custom while creating bold, heart-warming dishes that are meant to be shared with friends and family. The unique dining experience is based upon inventive Italian cooking techniques and utilizing simple, locally-sourced ingredients. Both Chefs partner with local farmers, fishermen, market traders and niche suppliers to source the freshest Adriatic fish, single-source olive oiils from Tuscany and Liguria, artisanal pasta, and daily produce from the Rialto market. The result is a considerable selection of pastas, risottos, prime meats and seafood, as well as a homage to Venice’s cicchetti heritage, the Italian response to Spain’s tapas. The intimate restaurant located adjacent to the hotel’s magnificent ballroom features an ever-evolving menu with dishes such as chestnut tagliatelle, a hand-made pasta with Chanterelle mushrooms and castelmagno cheese, a red prawn crudo with wild fennel and citronette and triglia di scoglio, local red mullet with roasted cauliflower and caper leaves.
In addition to Executive Chef, Dario Ossola and Creative Consultant Davide Oldani, The Arva menu has been enhanced by consultant Chef Norbert Niederkolfer, who has earned his own restaurant in South Tyrol three Michellin stars. Known for his philosophy of making the best of what local ingredients are readily available, Chef Niederkolfer provides a series of unique private culinary experiences at Aman Venice throughout the year. Not only do the bold flavors offered at Arva play an important role in taking patrons on a meaningful journey of Italy’s rich history but so does its location, and Arva could not have been located in a more pefect spot. Situated on the Grand Canal, the Aman Venice’s home is one of the city’s most significant buildings. Completed in 1570, the 16th century Palazzo Papadopoli is filled with museum quality treasures including frescos by 18th-century painter Tiepolo. In the 19th century, the Papadop-oli family turned adjoining buildings into two gardens which, today, are among the city’s rarest private green spaces. Between feasting on a hearty Italian meal complete with wines pairings, and a quintessential Grand Canal view, dining at Arva will leave its patrons with lasting memories of La Dolce Vita.

like high tea or a Sunday roast that are so wonderfully, quintessentially English. On a recent weekend in London,
The Egerton House Hotel located in the heart of Knightsbridge, is the perfect place for an indulgent afternoon tea experience. The elegantly appointed drawing room is sunfilled and the menu is extensive, with Vegan and Vegetar-ian options as well as traditional British tea sand-wiches and cakes. Seated in the bay window, we were taken through the options of tea, from black, green white and flowering. Try the Earl Gray tea, the salmon tea sandwich, the scones with clotted cream and end with the signature EG martini. As we were there in late afternoon, we were able to see the room transformed into candlelight and the fire lit at dusk. Guests are encouraged to bring their dogs, and two Dachshunds curled up by the fire as the bar started filling in with guests.

The combined Spirit of
Hennessy and Zhang Huan | BY ALINA ROSA LEYVA
I
n a world first, The Maison Hennessy honors the Chinese New Year 2020 with a landmark collaboration between the French brandy distiller and Chinese artist Zhang Huan. Traveling to Europe to witness first-hand the exceptional artistry of Hennessy and Zhang Huan, I am collected at my doorstep by First Corporate Sedan for my transfer to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. I am flying to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris and after a comfortable flight, I collect my suitcase and find my private driver waiting to transfer me to the incredible Hôtel de Crillon. This beautiful, historic hotel is located at the foot of the Champ-Elysees and forms part of Rosewood Hotels and Resorts. Showcasing refined taste, Hôtel de Crillon creates a truly magical experience and is a timeless Parisian landmark. We later meet with our host for welcome drinks at Salon Marie Antoinette, overlooking the Place
de La Concorde with views of the Eiffel Tower, Grand Palais, Les Invalides and other magnificent Parisian attractions. A favorite place of mine to have lunch within the Hôtel de Crillon is Jardin D’Hiver, where delicious meals are served daily. Restored to its former glory is the Chinese Pagoda in Paris, where we see beautiful Chinese and Asian art, antiques and are treated to a spiritual experience through meditation and Chinese tea. With its fantastic interiors of 17th and 18th century Chinese wood paneling, architectural features and Asian details have been preserved and protected, making it the ideal location and presentation backdrop for events and the exchange of global ideas. Ready to depart for the headquarters of Hennessy in Cognac, we are transferred to Paris Le Bourget Airport where we board a private jet to Angouleme. We are accommodated at the 5-star Hôtel Chais Monnet in Cognac, which forms

part of Grand Luxury Hotels. My 2-night stay in a deluxe room terrasse is sublime; the incorporation of oak beams and light furniture creates a feeling of airiness. Opening the 8th production of the Hennessy tradition is Master Blender Renaud Fillioux de Gironde, preserving a time-honored custom of familiar presence in maintaining expertise that ensures trust and complementarity as part of the Hennessy-Fillioux legacy. Following an apprenticeship of 15 years, Renaud is in keeping with the creation of exemplary cognacs. Born into a family of winegrowers and distillers, Renaud’s quiet strength and patient character excelled under the tutelage of his uncle, Master Blender Yann Fillioux, adding to the expert knowledge of cognac and the men who perfects it. Our wonderful trip includes a visit to Chateau de Bagnolet, Hennessy’s Maison in Cognac, where we enjoy a special dinner to celebrate the new partnership between Hennessy and Zhang Huan. A night to remember not only for the delicious food – we feast on roasted Dublin bay prawns, sweet potato and green apple; Meagre & mussels and my favorite, Vanilla flavored mango carpaccio, all lovingly prepared by chef, David Fransoret, but the most magical part is where the dinner is held, reserved for the most elite guests of Hennessy in the Chateau. Another highlight is personally seeing the astonishing art by Zhang Huan and being able to ask him how he keeps himself inspired by his work, having been an artist for most of his life. His answer is simple: “I’m a very spiritual person. I believe that applying the spiritual world and the universe, everything works together”. This is evident in the Eaux-de-Vie, a colorful and evocative dreamscape, capturing a universal spirit. Measuring over five meters long, Zhang was able to modify the famous Hennessy library of Eaux-devie, serving as the direct inspiration for this enormous masterpiece as a mystical metaphor with layers of meaning. “Making art is about using an object as a vehicle to express inner thoughts, or a spiritual
side,” he explains. “Eaux-de-vie is intended as a natural living expression.” As a foreigner living in the United States, Zhang infuses his work with life experience gained through travel. “Being abroad gave me a deeper understanding of my tradition, perhaps because I had to see myself from far away,” he says. “I believe that Chinese and Western cultures are meant to integrate with each other, which is why I sought to incorporate a sense of movement in this work. We never know where life may take us, but I do believe that everything that has gone before leads up to the present moment. That is what I want to celebrate in my creations.”

BEST BOURBONS
| BY NIYOSHI SHAH
Bourbon has never been more popular than it is right now, a definitive resurrection from a blue-collar worker’s drink and a backshelf brown spirit ignored by Scotch fans and overlooked by vodka cocktail sippers. And when you’re stocking your home bar with some Kentucky classics there are some bottles that deserve a prime spot on the shelf. This definitive guide of the best bourbons of 2019 explores everything you need to know about your favourite brown spirit.-
BUFFALO TRACE WILLIAM LARUE WELLER Part of the Buffalo Trace’s stable of incredible limited edition releases, the William Larue Weller annual releases are much sought after. Bottled at 67.7% ABV, it imbibes fragrant scents of caramel popcorn, new leather, plums, light toffee and pipe tobacco. The palate tastes of marshmallow, salted almonds, nougat, figs and dates. This whiskey finishes smooth, composed and flavourfully sweet. The only wheated bourbon in the range, this stuff is fascinating and impressive in equal measures.
107 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | BEST OF LUXURY 2020
OLD FOREST 1920 PROHIBITION STYLE While most distilleries shuttered during Prohibition, Brown-Forman received a federal license to continue making Old Forester for medicinal purposes. So, similar to the previous two releases, 1920 Prohibition Style reflects the style of whiskey that would have been distilled and bottled by Brown-Forman during Prohibition. The bourbon appears deep amber brown in the glass. A Strong cherry and dark fruit note dominate the scent, and some light notes of caramel and seasoned oak linger underneath. On the front palate, a very brief berry note leads off the front and the flavor transitions to caramel and toasted nut notes. In the mid-palate, the caramel note drops off and seasoned oak and caramelized sugar leads into a succulent light cream and seasoned oak finish.
SPIRITS
ELIJAH CRAIG BARREL PROOF To sip Elijah Craig at 12 years of age— at full barrel proof, without dilution or filtering—is to taste bourbon at its apex, so dangerously close to going over the crest of the hill, yet delivering a massive mouthful of incredibly robust flavors that drape leathery oak over a gooey caramel core, sprinkled with baking spice, while candied nuts and tobacco leaf notes appear on a drying finish dusted with cocoa.
BARRELL CRAFT SPIRITS 15-YEAR-OLD BOURBON
FOUR ROSES AL YOUNG LIMITED EDITION
This complex 15-year-old bourbon was blended and bottled at peak maturity so you can experience its true flavour. It is a perfect union of grain and barrel, with an old, oaky nose and a deep, honeymaple palate that reveals the lushness of the grain. The palate is smooth, and then surprising. Because it finishes just a touch smoky, peaty. The mouthfeel is bourbon-like, and there’s a nice bouncy roundness to it, which is balanced by slightly acidy peaty-ness. This is definitely high-end whiskey that tastes high-end.
Al Young has been an integral part of the Four Roses organization for 50 years. This entry in Four Roses’ Small Batch Limited Edition series was made using four of the distilleries’ ten base recipes of various ages, ranging from 12 to 23 year old liquid. The Bourbon exhibits aromas of sweet caramel and floral honeysuckle. The palate offers flavors of fresh peaches and apricots, encompassing a luxurious and warm fig and rich oak, finishing with a hint of mint.

Pinehurst GOLF NIRVANA Spectacular Golf Course in North Carolina | BY DAVID DANZIG
Describing the splendor of a golf trip to the Pinehurst area of North Carolina is easy. Foodies: imagine a village in the middle of a beautiful forest where not one, not two, but dozens of Michelin Star restaurants serve epicurean perfection each night. Music lovers: imagine a festival where everyone of your favorite bands occupy every stage, cranking out only their greatest hits. Couch potatoes: imagine the ultimate Hi-Def television showing a never-ending stream of your favorite movies and shows. YES, IT’S THAT SPECTACULAR. Of the 38 courses in the area (Pinehurst, Aberdeen and Southern Pines), a whopping twenty-three of them earned a rating of 4-stars or better on Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play.” In short, a visit to the North Carolina Sandhills of Pinehurst equals golf Nirvana. The history of the area provides a portion of the allure. Near the turn of the twentieth century, James Walker Tufts purchased 6,000 acres of land for about $1.25 an acre which would eventually become the Village of Pinehurst and the Pinehurst Resort. Enter Scotsman Donald Ross, an aspiring golf course designer, who arrived in America around that time with $2 in his pocket and a mind full of ideas. Tufts enlisted Ross to carve several golf courses out of the land, some of which would become the most famous in the world. Pinehurst No. 2, opened in 1907 with its trademark “turtleback greens,” re-mains Ross’ undisputed masterpiece, having hosted nearly a century of major tournaments with the U.S. Open scheduled to return in 2024. A dramatic statue of Payne Stewart stands near the 18th green, marking where Stewart won the 1999 U.S. Open in dramatic fashion. While No. 2 signifies a definitive bucket list golf experience for amateur golfers, most amateurs like myself would describe the experience as a painful bliss.

The Pinehurst Resort boasts nine courses (yes, nine) on its footprint—each different and unique. Like a menu at a great restaurant where you wish you could eat every single dish in one setting, Pinehurst’s courses, as well as the mustplay The Cradle, an immaculately groomed 9-hole par-3 course which Golf Channel describes as “the most fun 10 acres in all of golf,” will require multiple visits. And those are just the Resort’s courses; many more in the area beckon play. Tobacco Road (named #50 of the Top 100 Courses in the World by Golf Course Architecture), the Donald Rossdesigned Mid Pines Golf Club, Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club, and Southern Pines Golf Club and the Arnold Palmer-designed Mid South Golf Club are among the finest courses in the U.S. and are all available to you. Pine Needles hosted the 2019 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur and will once again host the U.S. Women’s Open in 2022 (also, in 1996, 2001 and 2007). And what if hitting the little white ball is not your thing? The Pinehurst area offers plenty of non-golf activities including treatments at the Resort’s spa, a fascinating historic walking tour of the Village of Pinehurst, eat and drinks at one of the area’s numerous breweries or exploration of 27 acres of beauty at the Sandhills Horticultural Gardens in Southern Pines. Golf or no golf, the Pinehurst area’s Nirvana is all yours.
