THE BREAKERS PALM BEACH THE ONGOING COMMITMENT OF EXCELLENCE
| BY DAMON M. BA NKS
T
he Breakers Palm Beach is one of the most iconic resort destinations in the United States. Before the pandemic halted travel, I always looked forward to the annual visit for a week of relaxation and an unparalleled level of elevated hospitality. Not pretentious, but just the right mix of casual luxury and exceptional service. I am not saying every visit has been perfect from A to Z. Afterall, I am someone who reviews hotels, and I evaluate everything – even when I am off the clock. But the overall resort experience never fails to score off the charts. Beyond the high levels of hospitality, service and amenities, the fact that the resort reinvests in itself each year without fail is seen (and appreciated) by all their guests.

HOTEL
Recognized for its gracious service, unparalleled seaside glamour and world-class amenities, the resort fulfilled this commitment to ongoing revitalization throughout 2020 – 2021 with the debut of Via Flagler by The Breakers, along with several enhancements to the 140-acre property’s vast array of amenities and spaces. Each year, the company invests an average of $25 million to carefully balance preservation and modernization, while introducing new valued products and services. This unrivaled financial contribution to a single hotel ensures an exceptional guest experience. Constantly impressed by this dedication, one of the best resorts in the world just gets better each year with these ongoing enhancements. 2021 is even more special for The Breakers Palm Beach as they celebrate their 125th Anniversary. This fall is a great time to take advantage of several exciting promotions they are offering, including the Fall Savings that runs from October 1, 2021 until December 16, 2021 that provides a host of perks and benefits; and guests can even combine this offer with their 6th Night Free promotion that also extends until December 16, 2021. If you have not yet visited The Breakers Palm Beach, now is the time to experience the ultimate in hospitality. The Breakers features 538 guest rooms and suites, including the ultra-luxury Flagler Club, a boutique hotel nestled atop of the resort. The property offers ten restaurants ranging from casual beachfront to stylishly sophisticated and a world-class private beach club with four pools, five whirlpool spas, 25 poolside bungalows and a variety of on-site watersports. Additional amenities include: two championship golf courses, 10 Har-Tru tennis courts, a Forbes Five-Star spa, an indoor-outdoor oceanfront fitness center, 14 signature boutiques, and a Family Entertainment Center with an extensive program of activities for children. “Reaching 125 years is a testament
to Henry Flagler’s vision, the unwavering commitment of the Kenan family and the timeless appeal of Palm Beach,” said Paul Leone, CEO of The Breakers. “Our owners’ long-term, purpose-driven approach to our business, and their passion for the well-being of our team, have a profound impact on The Breakers’ longevity. Vital to our success is the enduring devotion of the Kenan family, the dedication of our employees and the loyalty of our customers. Our storied history as an ever-improving, dynamic enterprise inspires our belief that the best is yet to come.” With an entrepreneurial approach to business and a devoted family ownership (heirs of founder Henry M. Flagler, circa 1896), this independent hotel has endured and thrived for 125 years. It is one of only 1,000-plus, family-owned businesses in America that is over 100 years old and still in the hands of its original owners. The Breakers also remains one of the longest, continuously operating businesses in the state of Florida. I visit each year for the exceptional dining at the resort (and around Palm Beach), the convenience of one of my favorite golf courses (Ocean Course at The Breakers) being directly across the street from the resort and one of the best spa experiences on the East Coast. The Breakers Palm Beach is simply a special place that continues to just get better each visit. “We are incredibly blessed to have such dedicated owners, who operate with a long-term view,” added Leone. “Thanks to their loyalty and passion, we have been able to sustain our annual investment in capital improvements. We are also grateful for our longstanding partnerships, as with Tihany Design, our collaborator for almost 10 years, who has reimagined numerous facets of our resort, from our restaurants and poolside bungalows to our magnificent lobby.”

TAMARA COMOLLI
THE EFFORTLESS LUXURY FINE JEWELRY | BY FR A N ENDIC OT T MIL L ER
The ocean has long been a source of inspiration for every piece of TAMARA COMOLLI Fine Jewelry. The German-based luxury jeweler’s designs exude a care-free joie de vivre evocative of sand and sea, well-illustrated within its unique hallmark ‘the drop,’ resembling a single bead of water. Yet their designs are equally as at home on the red carpet as they are on the beach. Each piece is designed at the company’s own Lake Tegernsee-located atelier, and available within worldwide boutiques located in ‘spirit locations’ such as Southampton and Palm Beach. Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Marissa Collection Naples and many other prestigious US jewelers also carry items from the brand’s collections. 12 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | FALL 2021

erving as co-CEOs of TAMARA COMOLLI are Sophia Friedl and Tobias Marquardt, each of whom brings to her/his position a breadth of international experience in the luxury and retail industries. Friedl previously served as retail manager for Salvatore Ferragamo within Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and the UK, and Marquardt previously served as vice president retail at BestSecret/Schustermann & Borenstein, responsible for retail operations in Germany and Austria. The duo share with Upscale Living Magazine their thoughts on the iconic brand which they have the pleasure of ushering into the future: The TAMARA COMOLLI brand’s signature slogan is ‘effortless luxury.’ Please define what this means to you. Sophia Friedl: “Effortless luxury” is a way of life. Our customers not only buy extraordinary yet timeless jewelry designs, but also the feeling of freedom, ease, and joy. Since 1992, we reinterpret fine jewelry, making it fun to wear every day from day to night. We encourage women to express themselves with our versatile collection by styling a two-carat diamond pendant such as our SNOWFLAKES Leaf casually on a leather cord, combining their favorite gemstones with our iconic MIKADO collection or creating stunning layering looks. Our philosophy is to enjoy precious jewelry with sophistication and a twinkle in the eye… The iconic and beautiful Carolyn Murphy is the face of your campaign. How and why was she selected to represent TAMARA COMOLLI Fine Jewelry? Tobias Marquardt: Carolyn Murphy epitomizes our unique brand philosophy with her natural elegance like no other. She is an inspirational, strong woman and mother which is something she shares with many of our customers. The TAMARA COMOLLI aesthetic is somewhat bohemian in nature and designs have been described as ‘upscale hippie.’ Why has this style resonated so successfully? Sophia Friedl: We have conquered the hearts of women across the globe with our unconventional way to style precious jewelry,
making it a must-have for every day. Depending on your taste, you can combine our designs elegantly or create casual bohemian looks with a material mix of precious woods, color-intense gemstones, and warm gold tones. Especially in the age of the "gypset" lifestyle and cosmopolitans who enjoy luxury but prefer understatement over status symbols, we touch a nerve with our creative stylings. Can you describe for me the classic TAMARA COMOLLI fan/ client? Where are most of your clients based? Tobias Marquardt: That is a great question because talking about fans is very authentic in our brand world. The first piece of TAMARA COMOLLI jewelry a woman acquires always marks the beginning of an inspiring and never-ending journey for her. There is no “typical” TAMARA COMOLLI customer as every woman is truly individual and beautiful in her own way. However, they are all highly sophisticated gemstone lovers. TAMARA COMOLLI designs are rooted in nature – specifically water, and more specifically, the sea. How is nature interpreted in the brand’s various designs, and what does the signature ‘drop’ epitomize? Sophia Friedl: Growing up close to the ocean and spending lightsome time at beach has been the major source of inspiration of the designer who founded the brand in 1992. As the water drop represented her personality and inspiration, it became the hallmark of the brand. The soft flowing forms of our jewelry flattering the body remind us of the feeling when you dive into the water. Each TAMARA COMOLLI design has an incredible wearing comfort, and it simply so natural to wear it for every occasion. Even a large collectible ring showcasing a one-of-a-kind gemstone feels soft as silk on the finger. The drop shape of our hallmark is also the main design element of our beloved SIGNATURE collection. The brand is German, yet Asian and Indian influences are quite evident. Is this intentional, and if so, where do the designers find their inspiration?

JEWELRY
Sophia Friedl: The desire to travel, the fascination of exotic countries and the interplay of colors in nature offer an incredible variety of inspirations. Our INDIA collection is a tribute to the vibrant liveliness of the Indian culture. The paisley pattern of our popular pendants is reminiscent of the ornamental paintings and intarsia of Indian palaces. Excitingly, they are also made in Jaipur using traditional craftsmanship. The collection is therefore authentic from the inspiration to its manufacturing. Color Stories like Caribbean, Palm Beach or Capri take us on an imaginary journey to these dreamlike places ... The luxury brand does not seem to take itself too seriously. Though the gems are rare, and the jewelry exquisitely crafted, many of your pieces can be worn casually and playfully – and are as suited to t-shirts and flip flops as they are to evening gowns. Is this intentional and something that you outwardly promote? Sophia Friedl: We want women of all ages to enjoy fine jewelry every day; during a stroll around the city, for business meetings, or as a sparkling statement by night. Our new campaign visuals featuring top models Carolyn Murphy and Zippora Seven convey our message and unique positioning in the world of luxurious jewelry. Many jewelry fans are afraid of color, yet dazzling gemstones are what TAMARA COMOLLI is all about. What might you say to encourage a color-phobic client to branch out, and try a piece from one of your Color Stories, for instance? Sophia Friedl: With our Color Stories, every woman finds her "home,” her perfect Color Story that suits her type, personality, and style. Customers who are uncomfortable with vibrant creations such as our Color Stories 'Candy' or 'Wildberry' often fall in love with the soft nude tones of our Color Story 'Camel' or the timeless elegance of 'Cashmere,’
which combines shimmering moonstones, diamond accents, and white gold. Visit one of our boutiques and put on jewelry in a variety of Color Stories! Even the most color-phobic woman will discover her dream combination that naturally accentuates her. Once you have started with a Color Story, the passion for collecting will never let you go...
Speaking of the past year and a half, even though many of us sheltered and were not social, it continued to be important to feel and look our best, and that included wearing jewelry. Why do you think that jewelry is such an integral part of one’s happiness and well-being? Sophia Friedl: Unlike fashion, jewelry accompanies us throughout our lives and delights further generations. Thus, we attach a deeper meaning to pieces of jewelry that we have received as a gift or that we have treated ourselves to for a milestone. Each piece of jewelry is associated with a memory that we can hold onto - even in difficult times - and that allows us to look to the future with hope and strength. That's why so many of us feel kind of naked without our favorite pieces, many of which we wear every day. A piece of ourselves is missing ...
Where are your gems sourced, and who is the lucky team that does the sourcing? Tobias Marquardt: Our head of gemology Nora von Linsingen selects each gemstone with her great expertise and passion for the colorful treasures. We are searching for rare and precious stones and pearls all over the world from Brazil and Madagascar to the magical island of Tahiti. Over the past 29 years we have built strong relationships with our suppliers. We also source gemstones on special customer request and create a bespoke design paying tribute to the uniqueness of the stone. The past year and a half was challenging for many businesses. How did your company weather the tumult, and what is the forecast for the future? Tobias Marquardt: We approached our customers with our loving spirit and our creativity. Despite all uncertainties, last year we launched a new brand book and sent it to our customers with some personal words to inspire them and make them want to come back after the lockdown. In March, we launched our brand-new GYPSY collection. That courage paid off. We will stick to it in the future and keep the unique spirit of our brand. UPSCALELIVINGMAG.COM

LOUIS VUITTON’S BRAVERY COLLECTION AN ODE TO THE MAISON’S FOUNDER | BY NI K I TA VI VE K PAWAR

his year marks the 200th anniversary of Louis Vuitton›s birth. To commemorate this occasion, the French luxury brand unveiled its High Jewelry Collection›s Bravery. The collection is essentially designed to be a tribute to the founder and the signature creations by the brand over the years. The collection consists of 90 pieces that retrace the remarkable life of the founder in the language of gemstones and illustrative manner; the collection honors the courageous journey of Vuitton - a teenager who became a legendary master trunk-maker. The statement-making high jewelry collection, created by Louis Vuitton, artistic director for jewelry and watches Francesca Amfitheatrof, is divided into nine chapters, each one of which marks the most important events and moments in Vuitton’s life and aesthetic. “It’s a collection where you walk alongside Mr Louis Vuitton,” said Francesca Amfitheatrof in a statement. “It’s a very linear, chronological collection that takes you through the history of what he created in his lifetime.” The first chapter of Bravery accounts for the founder’s birth on August 04,18821, with La Constellation D’Hercule. The necklace depicts the starry night sky of the Jura mountains in eastern France, in a rich array of tanzanites, tsavorites and opals. The piece’s composition feels almost mystical, especially for a necklace of eleven tanzanites, twelve opals, nine favorites that are sprinkled with 16 diamonds cut into the Louis Vuitton star logo. This custom cut makes a cameo throughout this collection. Another constant element is the scattered diamonds stars which are the house’s exclusive cuts created as a tribute to the monogram designed by Louis’s son, Georges. “Driven by his curiosity about the world, he embarked on that incredible journey across France. That’s why we have named this collection Bravery,” explained Amfitheatrof. “It’s not a word often used in high jewelry. Yet these notions of determination and adventure are intrinsic to Louis Vuitton, and we wanted to express them through this collection.” The L’Aventure chapter represented when Vuttion left home at age 13 after his mother

died a few years ago. It took him three years and 250 miles from Jura to Paris to start realizing his dream. “He grows from the young boy into the young man that arrives in Paris,” says Amfitheatrof, who has crafted a suite of seven emerald and diamond jewels. The highlight of this necklace are the three standout diamonds: a 5.21ct pear shape, 3ct Louis Vuitton cut flower and a 1.62ct round. The La Flêche necklaces represent his plight with three rows of platinum, yellow gold and white gold, entirely pavé-set with diamonds and Colombian emeralds to represent the forests using the Damier checkerboard stone marquetry. Further in the Arrow chapter, the L’Elan Vital necklace is reminiscent of how trunks were carried on a journey, reinterpreted using more than 2,500 brilliant-cut diamonds. The central V is set with custom-cut rubies, sapphires and diamonds in an ode to the personal emblem of the founder’s grandson Gaston-Louis Vuitton. The following chapters are Le Mythe – followed by La Passion, La Star du Nord and Le Tumbler chapters that encapsulate the incredible legacy of the Maison. One of the most spectacular pieces is the suite of meshlike diamond gems punctuated with fiery rubies, topped with a 10 LV cut star diamond
– which can be removed and worn on a V-shape ring. In the final chapter, Le Tumbler brings a burst of color with a rainbow medley of stones is topped with cool, mesmerizing aquamarine, set into gemset clasps that function just like the house padlock. “At Vuitton we bring the engineering into the design,” says Amfitheatrof of the clasp. “It doesn’t need to be hidden. The Petite Heure Minute Smalta Clara Hummingbird is the latest timepiece in Jaquet Droz's legendary collection of hand-crafted limited-edition decorative dials. The brand today creates timepieces that are a blend of work of art and technical wizardry using precious minerals, rare woods, and age-resistant enamel to distinguish each masterpiece. In-house artisans excel at plique-à-jour (or 'Smalta Clara' in Latin) enameling - a technique that demands a rare dexterity for a naturalistic, lively, and unique composition - to portray what
essentially is a stunning stained glass window for the wrist. This extremely precise technique dates back 1,500 with only a handful of artisans trained to do it, meaning that each piece shines with individuality and delicacy. Priced at $56,400 each, the 18-karat red gold case measures 35 mm and sits on a hand-embroidered green satin strap with 100 diamonds on the bezel and pallet lugs. The mother-of-pearl dial features a meticulous hummingbird crafted in a subtle gradient of seven shades of green and an off-centered dial at two o'clock. The watch contains the Jaquet Droz automatic caliber 6150, with a 38-hour power reserve and when flipped around, the bird is shown in
reverse and the micro-rotor, is engraved with another likeness of the hummingbird and its feathers. The Swiss watchmaker dates back to its founder Pierre Jaquet-Droz, who began attracting worldwide praise with his extraordinary grandfather clocks in 1738 and has used similar traditional techniques ever since. The Swatch Group purchased Jaquet-Droz in 2000 and is the current maker of Jaquet Droz luxury watches, destined to restore the brand according to its roots but in a modern way.

ARNOLD & SON DEBUTS NEW GLOBETROTTER STEEL | BY SOMNATH CHATTERJEE
G
eneva Watch days: Arnold & Son debuts new Globetrotter Steel Arnold & Son is known for its world-time watch and following the recent debut of the Globetrotter Gold, there is now an updated stainless steel version. This “world time” complication watch has a steel case that matches up with the steel bridge that stretches across the map of the northern hemisphere. The case forms a continuous line from the strap to the sapphire crystal dome, which is suspended above the dial. This large transparent hemisphere follows the line of the steel arch bridge that makes the Globetrotter collection different from all other timepieces. This arch is open-worked with a satin finish on all its flat surfaces, chamfered and polished by hand. The slender chords rest on two feet fixed with screws, like a stylized bridge spanning two banks. Here it reaches across half of the world, the most densely inhabited part of the earth: the northern hemisphere. At 45mm, the Globetrotter Steel has a large case size. The hemisphere was the central consideration of this design hence, requiring the amount of space. Above the equator, there are highly detailed views of North America, Eurasia, and Africa in a one-of-a-kind

sculpture in relief. Each continent is first rhodium-plated and polished, while mountain ranges are rendered matte for maximum contrast. The oceans have been hand-painted with numerous layers of lacquer in blue pigments, plus come with mother-of-pearl powder. In a lighter tone enriched with Super-LumiNova, the shorelines stand out at night, further accentuating the textured elements of this miniature showcase of manual craftsmanship. Arnold & Son also offers the southern hemisphere and can customize the world map of Globetrotter collection pieces to special order. The Globetrotter Steel is equipped with the Maison’s A&S6022 self-winding caliber. Like all Arnold & Son movements, it has been fully developed, manufactured, decorated, assembled, adjusted, and fitted at its factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The oscillating weight with a Clous de Paris guilloché pattern is skeletonized and NAC coated, bringing its hue closer to that of the movement. The Globetrotter Steel preserves the Earth’s half-globe and sapphire crystal ring, which together make it possible to read the time north of the equator. A choice of two dials is available, and both feature a lacquered sunburst motif: one in silvery-white of numbered pieces with no set production limit, and another more exclusive edition in tonal blue, which is limited to only 88 pieces.

FRENCH JEWELRY MASON FINDS A HOME AT BAL HARBOUR SHOPS | BY FR A N MIL L ER
I
t makes sense that French jewelry house DAVIDOR should establish its first US brick and mortar boutique in Miami Beach’s iconic Bal Harbour Shops. After all, luxury begets luxury, not to mention that DAVIDOR founder David Gusky is a Miami native who believes strongly in the local market. “Bal Harbour felt like a natural fit for DAVIDOR as it is one of the most luxurious shopping destinations in the US and has unique elements of natural beauty throughout the outdoor shopping experience,” said Gusky, whose passion for fine jewelry was ignited at an early age; his family has a history of high-end jewelry manufacture and distribution. His DAVIDOR designs are the result of personal experiences and points of inspiration, mostly from his travels throughout the world. “The DAVIDOR DNA is strongly rooted in my personal connection with what inspires me.” Currently operating out of an opulent pop-up that features both Parisian and Miami-Esque design aspects, the soon-toopen DAVIDOR flagship boutique will provide a truly transportive
Parisian experience. The well-traveled Gusky tells us more: What is Davidor’s most iconic piece or design? DAVIDOR is most well-known for our iconic, bold, signature, L’Arc de DAVIDOR collection featuring the repetitive arch pattern. The collection highlights our true savoir-faire of metalwork (18k gold), lacquered ceramic (16 unique colors), and diamond setting (4 patterns). Creating L’Arc de DAVIDOR and bringing it to life took three years of design and development. Can you explain your process? The design phase begins with an idea, point of inspiration, a first sketch or “croquis” and then slowly comes to life through numerous iterations into a hand-created gouache and then to a wax model. Ceramic, and two L’Arc Voyage Charm PM, 18k Rose Gold on Anemone and Mykonos Blue Silk Cord. Why is jewelry important to a cultured lifestyle? What does a beautiful piece of jewelry convey about the wearer? I think jewelry is absolutely a form of art and because of that, it impacts culture. Jewelry tells a lot about the person wearing it, their tastes, interests, passions, and inspirations. Do you view your pieces as an heirloom? I do believe DAVIDOR pieces are multigenerational. Besides Florida, where do you spend a great deal of your time, and what are some of your favorite places in the world and why? Pre COVID, most of my time was spent in Paris and other European spots. I love Paris as a home base and the ability to travel to small towns throughout Europe, to taste the incredible foods, and to see the beautiful heritage and architecture. I have been fortunate to travel throughout Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and South America and each place offer something unique that I admire.
that point, we validate the design, its size, scale, and how it translates into a piece of jewelry. What are your greatest inspirations when designing a piece or a new line? The majority of my inspiration comes from French and Italian architecture. I love to tell the story of what you see when you look through the Arch...the flora, the fauna, the scenery from different perspectives. What do you love most about what you do?
love for the piece. They love that they are buying something unique, handcrafted, and serial numbered. Our pieces are all handmade in our Paris atelier and this speaks to our clients. We have a growing male clientele, but we remain a more female self-purchase brand. Our male clients are growing daily which is very exciting to see. How does it feel when you are out and about, traveling the world, and you spot one of your pieces on a stranger?
I love having the ability to create and work in a medium that permits us to tell stories and articulate an inspiration both literally and abstractly.
I am always extremely excited and proud to see a DAVIDOR piece “in the wild” on our clients. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing people enjoy what they have purchased from the brand.

gala Trading partners with NeKeia (Keia) McSwain, owner and principal designer at Kimberly along with Cameron Interiors and CEO /president of the Black Interior Designers Network have created a capsule collection of handcut leather lighting designs made in Johannesburg, South Africa. The artisan leather lighting collection is designed by interior designer Keia McSwain and made entirely by hand. The NeKeia Collection for Ngala Trading consists of the NeKeia chandelier, the Nairobi pendant, and the Ndidi wall sconce. In addition to the three lighting designs, McSwain has also created four new leather color offerings: Nile River, Saharan Sunset, Oxblood, and Baobab Tree, which will be offered alongside Ngala Trading’s existing 10 leather color options. The collection is the first designer collaboration for both Ngala Trading and McSwain. Also, this was designed remotely in its entirety due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Designing this collection has afforded me the longawaited opportunity to pay homage to a people and land with a phenomenal 401-year-old influence that will never diminish but forever remain inspiring— that being the influence of the Mother Land,” says Keia McSwain. “I am greatly
honored to share in this work with African artisans whose amazing skills in this arena are a gift to the world of design.” “Having just celebrated our fifth anniversary, partnering with a designer who understands the history and background of our company and the products we offer feels serendipitous in its timing,” says Lawson Ricketts, creative director and co-founder of Ngala Trading. “Keia understands, respects, and embraces the stories of our pieces. She shares our desire to bring luxurious African design to North America in a previously-unseen way. This collection is the culmination of our artisans’ skill and passion, along with the incredible design aesthetic and eye for luxury that embodies Keia McSwain.” The NeKeia Collection for Ngala Trading will be available to order online starting July 1. The collection will be on display at Ngala Trading showrooms, located within the New York Design Center and AmericasMart Atlanta.

THE 765LT SPIDER
MCLAREN’S MOST POWERFUL EVER CONVERTIBLE SUPERCAR | BY NIKITA VIVEK PAWAR
32 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | FALL 2021
AUTOMOBILE
R
enowned worldwide for the exclusive, luxury, high-performance supercars, McLaren Automotive today revealed another landmark model: the 765LT Spider. The 756 LT complements the 765LT ‘Longtail’ coupe unveiled last year – which is currently sold out. The new Spider is McLaren’s most powerful-ever convertible supercar and brings the highest-ever levels of driver engagement to the McLaren LT experience. Limited to just 765 cars globally, the McLaren 765LT features the core attributes intrinsic to any McLaren Longtail of minimized weight, track-focused dynamics, and optimized aerodynamics coupled with the LT demand for exclusivity. Carrying over the coupe’s dynamic and aerodynamic DNA with no structural compromise and only a minimal 49kg weight increase, the 765LT Spider weighs in at just 1,388kg (DIN weight), which is 80kg lighter than a 720S Spider. The electrically operated, one-piece carbon fiber Retractable Hard Top (RHT) enables open-top motoring in just 11 seconds and operates at speeds of up to 50km/h, bringing the dramatic soundtrack of the quad-exit titanium exhaust system into the cabin to take driver engagement into another dimension. A full 22kg has been saved in the development of the LT’s bespoke Ultra-Lightweight forged alloy wheels, each fitted with Pirelli P Zero™ Trofeo R tires specially developed for the 765LT. Titanium wheel bolts are also standard fit. “As we continue to build the LT
sub-brand with the introduction of the new 765LT Spider, it’s clear that our customers are increasingly attracted to the Longtail supercar proposition of exhilarating, extreme performance, and limited availability. With all 765 examples of the 765LT coupe sold, it’s no surprise that as we publicly announce our new LT Spider, production capacity for 2021 is already filled.”, said Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer, McLaren Automotive. The immense performance and dynamic prowess of the new Spider – already proven in the 765LT coupe – are enhanced by three compelling factors: the stability of its MonoCage II-S structure, the game-changing design of its one-piece Retractable Hard Top roof, and the ongoing determination of McLaren engineers to pursue the company’s philosophy of super-lightweight engineering. The Spider version of the carbon fiber MonoCage II was developed alongside the coupe monocoque and shares most of its structural elements, including the windscreen surround. There are also additional comfort benefits for occupants – because it is a single-piece panel with no central seal, headroom is improved, while the extended length of the roof panel allows the tops of the A-pillars to be further forward, enhancing the sense of space and easing ingress and egress. The fully electrically controlled roof can be opened or closed in just 11 seconds, at speeds up to 50km/h. The system is powered by eight electrical motors – two to UPSCALELIVINGMAG.COM

fold the roof panel, two to raise and lower the tonneau cover and two to control the dynamic flaps which deploy on the tonneau buttresses when the roof is open. Like every LT, the new Spider is designed to excel on track, however, the extra dimension of theatre and drama offered by the convertible roof also makes it an even more immersive and compelling car to drive on the road. With the same highly evolved aerodynamic package as the coupe – the Spider matches the coupe’s outstanding aero performance in every respect, with class-leading downforce 25% greater than that of a 720S Spider. The remaining four ‘By McLaren’ themes offer a luxurious alternative to Alcantara®, featuring Carbon Black soft-grain leather with contrasting stitching in McLaren Orange, Situs Grey, Carmine, or Kingfisher Blue. All the ‘By McLaren’ interiors can be specified, at no extra cost, with a 12 o’clock stripe on the Alcantara® steering wheel, in McLaren Orange, Burnt Orange, Blue, or Dove Grey. The Folding Driver Display and Central Infotainment Screen surrounds are both available in carbon fiber to complement the finish of the window switch surrounds, steering
wheel clasp, and Active Dynamics Panel surround. Further carbon fiber is available from the MSO Defined range, including satin-finish visual carbon fiber for the air vents and extended sill trims with unique 765LT branding. The supercar is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing 765PS – giving the 765LT Spider a best-in-class power-to-weight ratio of 598PS-per-tonne at the lightest dry weight – and 800Nm of torque. With a sprinting power of 2.8 seconds to go from 0-100km/h, the car’s maximum speed is 330km/h (205mph). Customers can also direct MSO to replace the aluminum hood with a carbon fiber hood – finished in either body color or Gloss Finish Visual Carbon Fibre – or choose from an extensive menu of individual upgrades ranging from a Gloss Finish Visual Carbon Fibre tonneau cover to a Satin Finish carbon fiber steering wheel, a lightweight front badge, or a Gloss Finish carbon fiber ignition key. “A McLaren ‘Longtail’ is engineered to deliver not only incredible performance but also the highest levels of driver engagement. The 765LT coupe set new benchmarks in maximizing a driver’s connection with the car and the Spider

builds on this, adding the additional engagement factor of open-air driving to give direct access to the scintillating sound of the titanium exhaust – a pleasure that thanks to the electrically operated rear window can also be enjoyed with the retractable roof in place.”, Jamie Corstorphine, Director of Product Strategy, McLaren Automotive. The most powerful McLaren convertible ever and the latest and most engaging addition to the brand’s Longtail lineage can be ordered now from McLaren retailers with prices starting from £310, 500*.

PEGASUS HYBRID-ELECTRIC VTOL PROMISES MASSIVE RANGE | BY NIKITA VIVEK PAWAR
S
uperyacht designer Steve Kozloff has designed an unconventional next-gen aviation with a twin-prop VTOL aircraft that can take off and land both conventionally and vertically offering a mu ch wider range of destinations. With a massive range of 1,380-mile (2,222-km) range, Pegasus VTOL adorns a very helicopterish four-seat cabin with a set of fat wings, each fitted with a large tiltcapable propeller, 11 ft (3.3 m) in diameter. The 7,500 lbs. of thrust developed from the two 132” propellers offer 1 g+ acceleration, makes it possible to achieve flying speed within 5 seconds while only using 400 ft. of runway. Also, landing rollout would be very short due to the full reversing propellers. “I wanted to design the simplest possible design and still have good performance and comfort. The Pegasus is not pressurized, it is not certified, and it will be in the experimental category.” Said Steve Kozloff. Pegasus features a unique turbine electric power system. The single PT6A-67R turbine engine powers a generator and the generator powers the two electric motors on the wings. This system makes the power transmission from the engine to the rotor less complicated and increases reliability by avoiding the need for combining transmission, driveshafts, and rotor transmissions. These electric motors make around 700 horsepower, and together. The propulsion system would be powered by a generator, spun by a Pratt & Whitney engine capable of making 1,424 shaft horsepower. The aircraft would carry some 250 gals (946 L) of fuel, giving you that colossal range estimate. The aircraft would weight 3,300 lb (1,497 kg) and 6,000 lb (2,722 kg) fully loaded, leaving plenty of room in the weight
budget for cargo. Vertical takeoff mode can be very practical in many scenarios. However, in some situations, such as dusty dirt fields, powdered snow-covered fields, and proximity of light aircraft; would make vertical landing or takeoff impractical and not appreciated. “There is a significant market for experimental aircraft. By keeping the Pegasus experimental it will reduce the cost and feasibility greatly. I estimate it would cost 6 million USD to produce the Pegasus in the experimental category, vs hundreds of millions to develop a certified version.”, explained the designer. The aircraft can fly four people i.e. one pilot and three passengers. With retractable landing gear, it’s capable of conventional takeoff and landing, and Kozloff says it’s capable of reaching takeoff speed within 400 ft (122 m) of the runway. It’d pull up quickly upon landing, too, reversing its props to get it stopped in a short distance. It promises a very quick cruise speed of over 345 mph (556 km/h) and an unimaginable top speed. Kozloff says the aircraft’s “stunning looks” help the Pegasus live up to its nomenclature as a “mythical white stallion.” So, the Pegasus is a feasible project that could get certifiable, and probably out-weigh other eVTOL competitors in its class for range, speed, and payload, but it’s a notoriously difficult and expensive design to produce, it offers no propulsion redundancy, and it runs on fossil fuel. The founder believes that with a serious fund team the Pegasus VTOL can be constructed within two years.

BMW R18 TRANSCONTINENTAL AND THE R 18 B ARE TWO BEAUTIFUL CRUISERS DESTINED FOR THE HIGHWAYS | BY SOMNATH CHATTERJEE

T
he vast highways of America are tailor-made for a relaxed cruiser and its engine burbling away while you soak up the views all around you. A cruiser motorcycle is perhaps the best way to see a country and experience it at a relaxed pace in luxury and comfort yet still enveloped in the sensations that a motorcycle wraps you in. The new R18 Touring models from BMW are made exactly for those kinds of journeys and feature the ‘Big Boxer’ engine. The R18 Transcontinental is a Grand American Tourer being ideal for long-distance rides in an ‘American riding style’. There are many features added in for touring including a front fairing with a high windshield, wind deflector, and flaps. The cockpit comes with a set of classic analog round instruments and a 10.25 inch TFT color display, Marshall sound system, engine protection bars, cases, top case, seat heating, chrome trim, and an engine in Silver metallic. The R18 B “Bagger” is a more traditional touring machine and comes with a classic look without a top case and, in the style of a “bagger”, offers a low windshield, a slimmer seat, and a matt black metallic engine. As mentioned before, both motorcycles feature the massive 2-cylinder boxer engine aka the “Big Boxer”. It is the most
powerful 2-cylinder flat twin engine ever built in motorbike series production and develops an output of 67 kW (91 hp) at 4 750 rpm. In the 2,000 to 4,000 rpm range, it delivers more than 150 Nm of torque at all times as well as effortless pulling power and a sonorous sound-track. Both also get an array of technology like DCC electronic cruise control (Dynamic Cruise Control) and Active Cruise Control (ACC). In keeping with its cruiser ethos, the R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B feature a “mid-mounted footpeg” position of the footrests. Hence it affords a more relaxed riding position. The R 18 Transcontinental especially comes with a comfortable seat and seat heating as standard while having wider footrests also. Of course, with touring you need music, and here the R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B feature a sound system developed in collaboration with the British manufacturer Marshall, featuring 2-way speakers integrated into the front of the fairing. Black cover grilles with white Marshall lettering round off the classic look too. Prices and a release date have not been revealed yet but suffice to say, BMW Motorrad has hit the bullseye with its newest R18 cruisers and we cannot wait to hit the highway with these two machines!

NABOO FUTURISTIC YET ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY SUPERYACHT | BY SOMNATH CHATTERJEE
The future lies in sustainable luxury and use of materials with a distinct environmental consciousness. Naboo, the new super yacht from design studio, Hidden Portside, is a pure electric zero-emissions yacht along with a myriad of sustainable materials used for its development plus design. Even the design is quite radical and embracing open spaces. This 50 meter super yacht concept has a unique touch with its own vertical three story garden plus a 95sqm inner patio which connects it to the beach club which incidentally is complete with its own Jacuzzi and bar. The main deck is spacious enough for ten passengers to lounge about in utter comfort 40 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | FALL 2021
with four cabins. The bridge deck however features a master cabin while equipped with a second Jacuzzi and a private terrace. The luxury vessel is replete with sleek surfacing and is built with sustainability in mind while having a hull made from recycled aluminum. Further on there is a solar panel system on the roof (the reason why there is no sundeck) and the materials used for its fabrication includes synthetic teak. Interestingly, the lay-out intents to keep the inside temperatures remain as stable as possible to avoid excessive use of AC. In order to achieve that, smart materials as PCM (Phase Change Materials) are used in the interior walls. These materials can
change its phase emitting or absorbing air heat depending on the atmosphere temperature. Controlling inside temperature it’s also possible by using finishes as ultra-reflective metallic painting in the superstructure in order to reflect as much UV light as possible to keep the inside air cool. There is also space in the lower deck for a 26-foot garage along with all the toys which any super yacht owner would like to keep. Overall, this super yacht stays true to its name which is inspired from the Naboo planet in the Star Wars with its green interiors and design philosophy.

he Stunning Splash The Rockstar of Napa Valley Lawrence Fairchild is Making with The House of Perrarus Entertainment Center. How can you make a splash in a place as celebrated and prestigious as Napa Valley? luxury, and diverse arts. A fact not lost on the Rockstar of Napa Valley, Lawrence Fairchild, as he sought to introduce a more vibrant and luxurious way to sample his fine wine in a place where it can be difficult to stand out as extraordinary. Fairchild is a former Nebraska farm boy turned wine aficionado and the current mastermind behind one of the most collectible wine brands in the world, Stones Wine. He has a passion for art, design, and fashion and it is evident in his personal style. The best-dressed winemaker in Napa regularly rocks high

fashion favorites like Dior, Valentino, and Yurman and while designing the world’s most beautiful wine collections. But to make the kind of splash in Napa Valley he was hoping for would require Fairchild to use his talents to design the world’s most luxurious wine tasting entertainment center rather than our generation’s most sought-after wine. The House of Perrarus Entertainment Center was officially launched this year and it is a stunning collection of taste and luxury. When Fairchild began designing and building the House of Perrarus property in 2017, “it was a labor of love,” as he explained it, “and an exciting challenge to match the open-air modern space with the gallery feel of [his] house”. The space will serve as Fairchild’s exclusive and personal domain for tastings. It is a venue perfectly suited for a new Michelin bites dining program, House of Perrarus: A Stones Wine & Michelin Star Experience. During this one-of-a-kind experience, guests will dine on specially curated bites from a Michelin-awarded chef paired with the Stones Wine collection. But this experience isn’t what’s making the big splash for Fairchild. The House of Perrarus Entertainment Center was designed to be a space where Fairchild’s luxury clientele can fully immerse themselves in beautiful art, meticulous design, and very fine wine. From the moment you enter his space, you’re surrounded by a beautiful collection of art that Fairchild has long admired. At the entrance, you’re greeted by two stunning Wosene Kosrof pieces. Just as you turn you’ll notice the walls of the dining area adorned by a striking Cedric Bouteiller painting. Robert Mars, “Jackie O” then captures your attention from afar just as you begin to notice the intersection between fashion and interior design that Fairchild has lovingly placed around you. The entertainment center has installed a fantastic Gucci Tiger-face wallpaper on a select number of walls to help its guests fully appreciate the role fashion has inspired throughout the space. Across from the dining and coffee tables are pieces that include an Emmanuel Fleury sculpture and a second Bouteiller titled
“Marilyn” that truly illustrates the level of luxury, though, and design that went into creating the perfect tasting space. To complete the experience, Fairchild has incorporated his exclusive wine bottle designs which include Perrarus 1, 2, and 3. When asked what else he might be hiding in his collection to surprise guests, he answered, “Guests can look forward to tasting our 96-100PT Fairchild and Stone wines which combine extreme detail of craftsmanship with modern art-based designs. The Stones Wine portfolio currently consists of five exquisite bottles turned art-pieces, Stones No. 1, Stones No. 2, Stones No. 3, Stones Longitude • Latitude, and Stones Chardonnay.” Needless to say, this is how you make a splash in Napa Valley. When I asked Fairchild how he envisioned the future of The House of Parrarus Entertainment Center he said, “I want to create a worldclass wine, food, and art experience in which our special guests can immerse themselves. Sharing some of the most exclusive wines in the world and developing one-on-one personal friendships has always been the goal when creating an art-driven brand and experience.” Perrarus is Latin for rare or exceptional and is a limited-edition hand-blown glass collection that changes each year. Each collection is available by lottery only and limited to one bottle per member, never to be duplicated. Fairchild’s most recent collection, Perrarus 3: The Museum series will debut this month. The design is one not seen since ancient times and is a recreation of a Greek amphora from 6000 BC. Because of the shape, the bottle cannot stand by itself and is elevated in a magnificent translucent museum case. The bottle colors and designs celebrate some of history’s most famed artists like Van Gogh, Basquiat, Warhol, Pollack, and Picasso. Perrarus 3: The Museum series is a collection unlike no other in the world and if you’re lucky, maybe you’ll get a chance to sample from this one-ofa-kind bottle if you have the opportunity to visit Lawrence Fairchild at The House of Perrarus Entertainment Center.

HAYWIRE BRINGS SOUTHERN CUISINE TO DALLAS’ UPTOWN
Q+A WITH CHEF SKYLAR | BY DEVE SANFORD
A
True Taste of Texas in the Heart of Dallas’ Uptown, Haywire Restaurant opened its doors to the public early this summer. Its second location in the city, the restaurant boasts a beautiful, outdoor patio complete with a fireplace and retractable roof, creating the perfect atmosphere to grab some apps and cocktails under the starry night sky. Within moments of stepping through the doors, the ambiance sets the tone for what will be a distinctive ranchto-table dining experience. The rich, warm colors and enticing aromas pouring from the kitchen transport guests to a swanky Texas-style ranch
house complete with a wine cellar, rare whiskey library, and an eye-catching Shasta transformed into a private dining room, perfect for any celebration. Just like its location in Plano, Haywire in Uptown boasts its own robust cocktail program including its famous Texas Lemonade made with Western Son lemon vodka, elderflower liquor, ginger ale, lemon simple syrup, and of course a Luxardo cherry on top! Open for brunch, lunch, and dinner, Haywire Uptown has unique flavor profiles to tempt any palate. From southern comfort food like chicken and waffles to its signature shrimp and grits with
How did you get your start in the culinary industry?
Who are your mentors in the culinary world?
I have been in the restaurant industry in some form or fashion since I was 15. I did not start cooking until I was in my twenties where it happened on complete accident. I just happened to be helping my mom in the kitchen one day make chicken cordon bleu. It was so satisfying to not only enjoy something that I made, but also to see the enjoyment of others from what I made. After that initial encounter, I went to tour a culinary school and walked out with tuition.
Years ago, when I first began this journey, I would have said my mom. I think I still and always will.
What is your earliest food memory of a specific meal? Varenyki. Ukrainian perogi. I remember the excitement every time my siblings and I found out our mom was making it. Varenyki was also the best part about visiting Baba (my grandma in Ukrainian) because we were sure to get some.

What would you say is your signature dish? I wouldn’t say I have a signature dish. I am a fan of the low and slow mentality with food. There is something special about the transformation of a cut of meat that is cooked for long periods of time. What is the biggest inspiration behind your cooking? I want to have fun. Food can be just that. To take something unassuming or common and to transform it to something whimsical, is not only an awesome challenge, but it is extremely fun and

rewarding when you achieve your vision. In your opinion how much of an impact will sustainable practices continue to have over the preparation of cuisine in the future. People’s awareness of sustainability is growing exponentially in this country. The locavore and seasonality movement is real and it will shape the cuisine of our country for years to come. How much of a responsibility do you feel to implement these actions in your kitchen? Our brand is built on this concept. Farm to fork, locally sourced. We partner with dozens of small businesses and farms all over the state to bring the best Texas has to offer. bounds since we began our journey together. Ross’ Rowdy Bees, for example, provides Haywire with honey and honeycomb. They were only doing farmers markets when we met. Now they are in 20 something stores. As a staple in the community, I do believe that it is my responsibility to contribute to the community growth and I will continue to seek out the little shops and farms so I can be a part of their growth and success, and ultimately the communities’ growth and success. When developing menus in a place like Dallas, what local flavors, if any, do you incorporate. What do you think appeals to your clientele at Haywire the most? I try to incorporate as much local ingredients and product as I can. From the products of local companies to the cooking methods and equipment of the cuisine around Dallas. I think the appeal is comfort. Not necessarily comfort food, but the comfort of the hospitality and the cuisine combined. We also have a little something for everyone at Haywire. From high-end to low-brow country food and everything in between. Is there a place you would travel just for the food? If so, what would you eat? Mexico. I think there is a strong relationship between what we do here at Haywire and the Mexican cuisine. And I am not talking about Tex Mex. And what would I eat? Anything a grandma is preparing! What has been your biggest challenge in pursuing a career in the culinary arts? Quality of life. I am a chef, but I am a husband and father first. I always say, I began my career for me, to do something I loved, but I will finish it for my family. I try to make sure I use this mentality for those that work under me as well. I always try to provide for them what they need to have a healthy family life, as this industry can be brutal.
only to my family, but my employees too. It was pretty cool to get to go to the James Beard House in NYC to cook a Foundation Dinner though! Least favorite/favorite ingredient to cook with? I love cooking with tough cuts of meat. I love the transformation that takes place. Short ribs, beef cheeks, lamb shanks...the wait is worth it. I don’t dislike anything. I always say, you don’t hate the ingredient, you hate the preparation. Someone somewhere can make something you “don’t like” be good. I do try to avoid tedious things though like shelling peas, cleaning fava beans. Things like that. When creating the menu for Haywire Uptown, what were some different elements you tried to incorporate to set it apart from the flagship location in Plano?
What has been your biggest achievement?
Our Uptown team strives to have zero difference in the menu from location to location. The amazing experience you have at the Plano location is the same you will have at the Haywire location.
Again, quality of life. I worked hard for a long time. I missed a lot with my kids. I am at a point in my career where I can begin to give back, not

Challenge yourself every day. There can be a lot of monotony in coming in, setting up your station, executing, breaking down, etc. It is important to push yourself, even when there is no one pushing you. Do you have a fun cooking hack or favorite recipe you’d like to share? Make your own stock. It is miles better than the store-bought stuff. I measure out 1 cup and store them in snack sized zip lock bags in the freezer, so I always have it on hand when I need it and it is always measured out. This way I know exactly how much to pull out. Take it as step further and reduce your stock by three quarters and freeze it in ice cube trays for instant homemade bouillon flavor bombs.

s the first new hotel of its kind to open in Amalfi in nearly 20 years, Borgo Santandrea is a 45-room cliffside hotel suspended 90-meters above sea level. Overlooking the small fishermen’s village of Conca Dei Marini, the luxury hotel boasts its own private beach, jetty, forthcoming exclusive beach club, and three restaurants. Following three years of meticulous construction along the cliffs, the new hotel had its soft opening this summer. Constructed as the passion project of two Italian brothers from Ischia, the Orlacchio brothers focused on building a freshly modern yet unmistakably Italian hotel. “It has been a beautiful challenge, over the past three years, to bring the property to life and I feel proud to have brought so many talented artisans and iconic Italian brands together to create a one-of-a-kind hotel that is truly ‘Made in Italy’. We feel Borgo Santandrea is much more of a home than a hotel and we look forward to welcoming our guests this summer,” said Maurizio Orlacchio, owner. Borgo Santandrea immerses travelers in classic Italian charm with incredible design details, all of which were produced locally, like 31 different types of geometric handmade and hand-painted tiles, that are a nod to Gio Ponti and local pattern traditions. The hotel features 29 guestrooms and 16 suites, each one offering uninterrupted views of the sea and the ancient fisherman’s hamlet of Conca Dei Marini. Guests can choose from seven room types which all feature Once Milano linens, artisanal handmade ceramic tiles, bespoke furniture, a full-size Italian marble bathroom, and wrap their guests in warm Italian hospitality and charm. Their most opulent offering is the Deluxe Suites with a Private Pool ranging between 915-1,130 sq. ft. and offers a private garden and stunning private infinity pool. Overseen by Michelin-starred chef Crescenzo Scotti, Borgo Santandrea’s three restaurants and two bars offer classic Mediterranean fare with varying modern twists. Scotti crafted menus that highlight the bold local ingredients to allow guests to discover authentic flavors influenced by the freshest of local ingredients. From the panoramic patio of Alici and seaside glamour of The Beach Club to the culturally inspired ambiance of La Libreria, diners can savor breathtaking vistas of the Amalfi Coast with staples like the Frisella al gusto d’estate, (Pugliese Rusk Bread with summer produce), Burrata with tomatoes and a Rosemary Negroni. urreptitiously molded into an incline in the bush, Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge in South Africa’s Sabi Sand emerges like a beacon of artistry. This sophisticated modern marvel is home to 12 ultra-luxurious suites, and I cannot contain my elation to spend three nights at this haven of opulence. I quietly wonder what a leopard smells like. This is not some capricious thought – right in front of our game drive vehicle, a stunning male leopard is sitting in the middle of the road, rubbing his cheeks in dung. “Why is he doing that?” I ask ranger Jonas. “This is to mask his scent,” he explains while tracker Jack nods in agreement. “It makes him less noticeable to other predators and prey.” We follow him through the thick vegetation where he momentarily stops to survey his surroundings and eventually settles on the side of a termite mound for his morning nap. After a visit to Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge in 2018 with my family, I could see that the blueprint for the Sabi Sabi lodges was that of being immersed not only in nature but of nurture, fueled by their ethos of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Which made the decision to experience the magnificence of Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge straightforward, especially following a complete luxury suite refurbishment in 2019. South African design firm Dakota Designs was tasked to breathe new life into the suites, while seamlessly blending the architectural masterpiece into the surrounding environment with the use of skillfully selected materials and textures which are in total harmony with nature. As I enter my suite, I am astounded by the eclectic mix of furnishings and finishes – a bespoke slate drinks cupboard with a beautiful exterior and interior, an arrangement of kudu horns in a glass vase, a leather headboard capped with a flight of handcrafted metal birds and a closet with weathered copper rails to hang your clothing. The bathroom is elegance personified – think cool smooth marble behind the double vanities, solid Kiaat timber vanities, polished stone basins, a gorgeous soaking tub, and a shower with a view of the bushveld. A splendid divergence is the rough earth-like texture of the walls and floors. Sliding doors open onto a private veranda, with oversized couches, a handmade solid Zambezi hardwood pod-shaped coffee table, and a leather hanging sling chair. Framing this splendiferous scene is a full-length pool, a sundeck, and an outside shower. The perfect secluded spot for your mid-morning beverage or pre-game drive aperitif while focusing your eyes on spotting passing wildlife, which could be anything from impalas, waterbuck, elephants, or hyena.

Meals are enjoyed in the main dining area where restaurant manager Tshwarelo’s friendly demeanor enhances the hearty atmosphere, and Sweetness adds the culminating joie de vivre. For lunch, diners can also choose to sit with their feet in the water at the Day Bar, and for dinner, options are outside under a blanket of stars, in the outdoor boma, in a secluded library, in the art gallery, in the meditation garden or an underground wine cellar. Head chef Mercy and chef Rory are at hand to explain dinner menus to guests, and the cuisine is out of this world. The freshest ingredients ensure the most delicious food and after enjoying the most delectable seafood risotto, kudu loin with beetroot purée, coupled with potato fondant & red wine jus, beef fillet with herb parmesan mash, baby onion & broccoli jus, I can testify that the word ‘diet’ should not be part of your vocabulary. Do not stress though for the figure-watchers, there is an Earth Gym. The Amani Spa offers an extensive range of treatments, and if you are in any way in need of additional pampering, I can highly recommend a visit to this tranquil space. Spa manager Joanne’s hands worked their magic with a 30-minute head, neck, and shoulder massage. Before long, I am in dreamland and relieved of any stress for the rest of the day. Situated in the private Sabie Game Reserve, part of your stay at Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge includes twice-daily game drives. With no fences between the reserve and Kruger National Park, this is a game viewers paradise. I tick the Big Five off during my stay, but by far the most memorable sightings are of four different leopards – a female leopard and her 8-month-old cub in the late afternoon, a male leopard taking a walk on the eastern part of the reserve and stumbling upon an elderly male leopard in the dry riverbed close to Earth Lodge where he proceeds to drink from a nearby water source. The most exciting encounter was finding a lion pride with the combined expertise of Jonas and Jack having seen tiny footprints in the sand. How delightful to come across three female lionesses one morning, brandishing their new litter of seven cubs. What strikes me are the dynamics between mothers and cubs – frayed nerves and snarls when all seven cubs descend on one lioness to try to nurse while the other one attempts to sleep. As Jonas and Jack so aptly put it – “all good things come to an end”, and on my last day, I make an effort to pause and reflect on this oncein-a-lifetime stay, with a promise of returning with my family one day. The journey to the iconic Skukuza Airport is interrupted by a number of stops as we’re exiting through the reserve and a myriad of photo-worthy animals seem to want to

T
he Dalmore Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky has introduced a new 30-Year-Old limited-edition bottling and it starts with the 2021 edition. This would be launched on the 1st of September and there would be only 200 bottles available nationwide. The 30-Year-Old 2021 Edition is the first in what will be a series of limited annual editions. Each edition will offer a new 30-year release of The Dalmore single malt. The 2021 Edition started life in American white oak ex-Bourbon barrels and was then transferred into the 30-Year-Old Tawny Port Pipes from Graham’s Port. The aged Tawny Port Pipes then work along with The Dalmore’s house style to create the whisky. The whisky has an aroma of candied orange, treacle toffee, morello cherries, and freshly baked brioche while on the palate you have black forest fruits, pear tarte tatin, and victorian plums. The finishing notes comprise of Madagascan vanilla pod, Napoleon cake, and shaved almonds. In fact, it’s easy to lose track of time completely when in-flow; snorkeling by the coral reef, sunbathing at one of the two secluded beaches, or wildlife watching in the dry forest. Unlike most spas, this one is flexible with your sequence of events. With just a handful of guests at the resort (even at full capacity) and a staff to guest ratio of 2:1, you are at blissful leisure. On-site there’s a sunset deck, library, and beach cabanas dotted throughout. Meals and non-alcoholic beverages are included in two restaurants, and so too are all the activities. Seriously, all you have to focus on is wellness. Checks, bookings, and itineraries can wait upon return to the office. PRIVATE TENTED SUITES TO DISCONNECT IN Right now, Kasiiya Papagayo features seven exclusive eco-friendly suites, but as of November 2021, this will increase to nine. All carry a similar decor and design - it’s more that they vary depending on needs. For example, the Laughing Whale suites perched up on the hilltop, in our option, are more romantic and best for couples seeking privacy. Down by the beach, the larger Floating Bird and Lazy Turtle suites have direct access to the beach, working well for those seeking to be more active or traveling as a family. All suites, regardless, feature spacious, minimalist designed indoor and private outdoor areas, king-sized beds, and rustic-jungle-accented bathrooms. Although you’re sitting on a fully equipped resort, there’s a distinct remote feeling about the suites - like being out alone in the jungle. Maybe it’s

up, tailored to any dietary restrictions or preferences. Think Mahi-Mahi with garden-grown vegetables, creamy roast pumpkin soup, and chunky mango sorbets. A cooler is also placed in each room, with chilled beverages and treats replenished each day for in-between meal needs. Again, you don’t have to go down the superfood route. Indulgence is perfectly acceptable and possible (Costa Rica does have wonderful chocolate, after all, and alcoholic beverages may be purchased). But for most visitors, the carefully planned nutritious yet flavorful culinary journey is available and highly recommended. WELLNESS

NATURE
Kasiiya’s on-site healer, Yamuna (along with sous-healer Vanessa), is renowned for his gifts of healing. A session with him can comprise of a combination of treatments such as reiki and traditional massage and uses natural elements from Costa Rica’s thriving ecosystem. Guests will learn to pause and feel the powerful connection with nature, heightened by the fact the treatment takes place amid sights, smells, and sounds of the jungle. The experience is profoundly transformative. In addition to internal transformation, Kasiiya works with Yamuna to transform the local holistic community - they are in the process of setting up healing schools so that local practitioners can learn his craft and wellness techniques. ADVENTURE SPLASHED WITH EDUCATION
the openness of the space, maybe it’s the fact that there’s no key (although there are locks inside, for safe peace of mind), or maybe it’s the choice of furnishing that helps one disconnect. Television, espresso maker, kettle, fridge, iPad...they’re not present here so it doesn’t feel like you’re at a hotel or resort. Instead, staff can quickly bring you hot coffee or if you must, if you really must, you can connect a laptop to the high-speed WiFi if nature’s entertainment doesn’t suffice. In line with the company ethos, the rooms follow community-driven initiatives that invest in local craftsmen. Kasiiya’s carpenter works on 85% of the property’s woodwork and is being invested in by way of woodshop and continuing collaboration in all future endeavors.
A NUTRITIONDRIVEN ALL INCLUSIVE For anyone who’s ever been on a cruise or resort in Egypt, the thought of an all-inclusive could spike the thought of a post-vacation detox, but thankfully here, the vacation and the detox can be combined. Kasiiya’s restaurants serve meals with fresh, organic ingredients wherever possible. Guests are nourished with whole foods, from the homemade almond milk in your cappuccino to the catch of the day unhooked right in front of the property. The menu is designed to keep waste to a minimum (both food waste, and general waste) whilst offering guests choice and variety. Each week, two menus are drawn

Back on land, Kasiiya has nature biologists who work with the team on a variety of wildlife programs. Guests can request to join him as he carries out his work day or night. CAN FERRERETA
SANTANYÍ, MALLORCA Located in the authentic Mallorcan town of Santanyí on the southeast coast, Can Ferrereta opened up this lesser-known part of the island for the first time. The SoldevilaFerrer family, who also own Sant Francesc Hotel Singular in Palma has meticulously restored a historic 17th-century building, transforming it into a stunning 32-room hotel surrounded by verdant gardens. It is home to a Mediterranean restaurant Ocre, a poolside all-day dining restaurant and bar La Fresca, a beautifully designed spa Sa Calma with hammam, an indoor pool, and a gym, as well as a tranquil library, curated by the expert team at Maison Assouline. Can Ferrereta is reminiscent of a grand summer house, with space, natural light, and textures
blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living. The launch brings together the latest creative talent from Spain, including Mallorcanbased BASTIDAS Architecture and Spanish design house WIT who have worked alongside the Soldevila-Ferrer family and carefully overseen the project from start to finish. During the restoration of the main 17th-century building, the team was mindful of the history and tradition, while the hotel’s two new structures have been sensitively developed in harmony with its original features. Rustic wooden beams and original stonework in juxtaposition with sleek furnishings and contemporary art. Art will be a distinguishing quality of the hotel, with a focus on local and Spanish artists. Some of
the pieces will come from the Soldevila-Ferrer family’s private collection and will include work by the likes of Guillem Nadal, Dominica Sanchez, Miquel Planas, Manolo Ballesteros, Riera i Aragó and Jordi Alcaraz. Sitting pride of place by the main garden and swimming pool, a stunning 2-meter, 280-kilo visage sculpture by the renowned Barcelonaborn Jaume Plensa is sure to become a focal point of the hotel. Additionally, contemporary photography by local Barbara Vidal, adorns the walls, featuring images of the original buildings before the renovation. | hotelcanferrereta.com

The Olympic Hotel tapped Spanish design studio 76 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | FALL 2021
Lázaro Rosa-Violán (LRV) to create the interior vision and design for the hotel which celebrates its storied grandeur with a lush new vision of Seattle luxury. Inspired by the near 100year presence of The Olympic in Seattle, the lobby effect is a seamless reinterpretation of the soul of the hotel that satisfies the modern traveler’s need for polish, elegance, and vital design. Standing on the design pillars of heritage, layering, lighting, and color, the lobby concept mixes greenery, rich textures, inventive modern forms, and the glow of warm lighting. The transformed lobby blends existing historic finishes with new notable elements including a show-stopping art installation above the center lobby bar. Working in tandem with LRV, Parker-Torres Design
Inc. designed the meeting rooms. In 2016, Parker-Torres completed a $25 million renovation at the hotel which included a total renovation of all guestrooms and corridors. Both design partners worked hand-in-hand with MG2, the Architect of Record, who orchestrated a choreographed alliance between restoration partners. MG2 oversaw the handling of code enforcement, city processes, design reviews, execution, and final delivery while simultaneously navigating ADA regulations and preserving the integrity of vintage finishes, fixtures, and woodwork. | fairmont.com/seattle
