VICENZAORO 2020 Jewelry Trends for a New Decade | BY BARBARA PALUMBO
On a blisteringly chilly yet clear January morning, attendees of the Vicenzaoro fair – held twice per year in the city of Vicenza in the Veneto region of Northeastern Italy – excitedly walked over a layer of frost and past sculptures depicting works by the artist Salvador Dalí through the doors of the Fiera di Vicenza expo center. The VO fair – known also by jewelry brands and big-box buyers as the industry’s “Jewellery Boutique Show” – has been a staple in the luxury jewelry sector for many, many years. This year, however, Vicenzaoro felt fresh; modern even, but there was also a feeling of pride generating through its halls. The fair seemed proud to be the premier jewelry show of this new, roaring decade, and was more than ready to take on the role of “prima.” This edition of Vicenzaoro brought together every genre of the jewelry, gem, watch, and vintage sectors and combined them under one enormous roof where members
of the international media and the world’s top retailers were able to easily learn about the year’s expected trends, how the market is evolving, and what the future looks like for the fashion industry’s glitzy little sister. Popular and largely recognizable brands such as Roberto Coin and Fope were located in one of the larger “districts” of the fair, while everyday fashion and accessories companies such as Pianegonda and Pesavento were in another district entirely. Loose diamonds and colored gemstones were together in their own hall, while vintage jewelry and sought-after independent watch brands appeared on the second floor of the expo center in a new, separate mini show named, “VO Vintage.” Buyers from the world’s most respected high-end department stores as well as several specialty retailers could be seen sauntering from hall to hall, gazing longingly at the baubles before them (as well as at the beautiful Europeans working the booths) which shed some light on whether or not

fine jewelry is still seen as relevant – or as sought after – to today’s younger generation of buyers. Full disclosure: it very much is. Jewelry is alive and well, and so are diamonds, watches, and colored gemstones.
Yellow Gold Still Reigns Supreme, But… Whether plated over a lesser expensive metal or serving as a backdrop to meticulously set precious gems, yellow gold – particularly in 18K – remained the metal of choice at this year’s Vicenzaoro fair. The metal was followed closely however, by pink (or, rose) gold. Designers such as Paolo Costagli and Gismondi offered collections using pink gold with a spattering of pave set white diamonds, while also producing those adornments in alternate shades of the precious metal.
JEWELRY
Aside from gold pieces in yellow and pink, there was another, unexpected metal that had a strong showing at this decade’s first jewelry fair: titanium. Renowned French designer Lydia Courtielle proudly displayed pieces from her “La Vie en Rose” collection which were partially crafted in titanium and set with colored gemstones. And the brand Giovanni Ferraris had their “Titanium” collection on hand to the delight of influencers and bloggers looking for colorful, instagramable content. 2020 seemed to have brought forth a new era of creativity, even in designers known for playing it safe, which was a refreshing break from the layered necklace and stackable ring looks that have been so strong over the last several years.
Speaking of Creativity It’s not a secret that designers in every luxury genre – including fashion, automotive, architecture, and jewelry – tend to “borrow” ideas from those who came before, which, in turn, influences new designs. Some call it an extension of a potentially good idea; new life being breathed into something that worked well in the past, but others call it lazy, stating that these genres rarely come up with a product that is fresh and exciting, all on their own. Milanese jewelry designer Beniamino Crocco of Dreamboule is, by far, the exception to this way of thinking. Having previously worked in product and development for the LVMH watch brand Hublot, Crocco is no stranger to designs using sapphire crystals or domes. While on holiday with his family several years back, after seeing his children play with their snow globes in front of the fireplace and noticing how the light and beauty emitted from the objects, an idea came to him resulting in one of the most fantastical styles of jewelry to come out of the Vicenzaoro. Dreamboule’s rings are available in 16mm, 28mm, and a remarkable 36mm and are crafted in 18K gold at the base, then highlighted with a cabochon sapphire domed crystal made in Switzerland which serves as a looking glass into the story being told on the inside. Precious gemstones float in a liquid while flakes of gold dance around stationary animals, structures, or words.
A Cuff’s Enough The jewelry making the biggest impact at this year’s fair however, had to have been big, bright, and bold bracelets. Whether decked in diamonds or finished using artistic hand-polishing techniques, both cuff and bangle bracelets alike had a strong showing in Vicenza. Roberto Coin – who is known around the world and on red carpets alike for his statement-making pieces – presented stunning new jewelry from his “Rock & Diamonds” collection including a chunky yellow gold bracelet with diamond-set sugarloaf edges. Also worth mentioning was Yeprem’s edgy two-tone gold and diamond bangle from the brand’s “Electrified” collection, which when worn alone makes a major statement but would look just as elegant stacked alongside other pieces. There was a big focus on wrist adornments at the fair this year. Statement pieces seem to be coming back into the mainstream, taking the place of the delicate chain bracelets that have been popular now for several years. Vicenzaoro’s exhibitors brought their A-game to this year’s January edition of the fair, and they did so through their creativity, their courage, and their desire to offer the fashionistas of the world a little something different; a little something more than what’s been gracing the necks, ears, fingers, and wrists of today’s jewelry buyers.

MEET SONIA BOYAJIAN Distinctive Style, Love of Ceramics and Handmade Jewelry | BY SMITHA SADANANDAN
L
ast fall, jewelry designer Sonia Boyajian opened the doors to her 5,500 sq.ft. gallery in West Hollywood on La Brea. Sonia worked with Pamela Shamshiri of Studio Shamshiri for the new space where she makes her bold, whimsical and delightful creations. Inspired by artist Georgia O’Keeffe’s home and studio in Abiquiu and elements from designer Alexander Girard’s home, the playful sense of shape, arcs, lines and angles create a visually engaging space. “Other parts like that main display cabinet was inspired by artist Donald Judd at the Chinati Foundation,” explains the Los Angeles native. The walls and interiors,
awash with pastel powder pink, incorporate arresting light fixtures, mobile and ceramic. “All the ceramic fixtures are enlarged pieces of the jewelry that I have already made.” Sonia’s desire to steer clear of identifiable pieces of objects and furniture has led to a “more austere and authentic approach.” The décor, says Sonia, came from the light fixtures, door knobs and mobile that Studio Shamshiri commissioned her to make in ceramic and bronze. Studio: The soft angles and lines came from New Mexico architecture. We used a very pale pink color to create a warm and inviting

space. The paint was by Portola – and the natural limestone in the paint gives the adobe affect. Jewel displays and ceramics: If you see a lot of ceramic, it’s because I make the ceramics in-house. It’s in the jewelry as well as the trays that hold the jewelry. We made every ceramic element in the space. I wouldn’t say that the jewelry is displayed on the wall but more in the niches meant to house the jewelry; like a ‘little home’ for each handmade object. Passion for art: I love any form of art and design. I suppose I am mostly drawn to handcrafted work, artisanal pieces and the history and purpose of the creations.
JEWELRY
Interest in jewelry: After studying fashion at Otis College of Art and Design, in LA, I moved to Antwerp to seek a job in fashion. In the meantime, my interest in jewelry led me to study at the Art Academy in Antwerp, which later led to my job with Antwerp jeweler Pascale Passelis. It is there that I honed my skills and learned how to truly work with metal and fine jewelry. Melding jewelry with ceramic: It’s true that I love ceramics, but the reason I initially began using ceramics in the jewelry is because I can create large-scale pieces without the added weight that metal brings on. My jewelry is handmade by me here in LA. Carving a path: When I started 18-years-ago, there were not too many people making bold and whimsical jewelry. I carved my path by making a small collection and going to small boutiques around Europe, and showing my jewels. Luckily, people were interested and buyers started buying. Business lesson learned: Direct-to-consumer is the best way to own your own company. The pieces that have the most meaning: What is most meaningful to me are the pieces that I create for my clients, and that, in turn, becomes part of who they are, almost like their amulet. Then I know that what I created has a purpose. Exciting moments: Doing the Nina Ricci runway jewelry with Peter Copping was definitely a highlight, as well as working with other incredible creative people. I would say that this studio collaboration between Pam and I would be the most exciting moment of my career. 13 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2020

L‘HOTEL The Perfect Parisian Hideout | BY LAWRIE HOLMES
If you want to know where Johnny Depp spent new year- look no further than the Left Bank’s gem, where Oscar Wilde spent his last days.
I
f you want to see and feel old Paris, L’Hotel is your destination. The legendary hideaway tucked into the back streets of St-Germain, the city’s arty quarter featuring numerous independent galleries, offers a chance to step into another realm. Most famous for being the last residence of Oscar Wilde, L’Hotel is steeped in history, something you realise when you first step through its discrete entrance on the Rue des Beaux-Arts, named after the nearby fine arts school. The writer rented a furnished apartment at the hotel then called the Hôtel D’Alsace, before his death in 1900, famously saying that he was “dying beyond his means.” Throughout the 20th century, the address continued to attract famous figures including Salvador Dali, Princess Grace, Frank Sinatra, Elisabeth Taylor

and Richard Burton. Most recently, film star Johnny Depp spent the new year period holed up in L’Hotel. Upon entering the reception, you are taken by the hotel’s distinct atmosphere- created by luxurious touches such as wall mouldings and grand chandeliers. But for me the vital impact is created by the scented aroma that oozes decadent charm throughout the hotel. The feeling is of entering into ancient Paris, the hotel’s stone walls conjuring up visions of Notre Dame and Victor Hugo. There’s an extraordinary galleried staircase- that on arrival you glimpse up to, adding to a sense of otherworldliness. Downstairs leads into a steam room and pool that feels like an ancient grotto. Then on into the bar and lounge area- a venue of parties for the French capital’s funky crowd

HOTEL
that I have witnessed on previous visits to the hotel. Today its library-like alcoves host an eclectic crowd of well-heeled tourists and arty folk, all seeming to blend perfectly into the stylish surroundings. I arrive on a day of torrential rain- adding to the atmospheric effect created by Jacques Garcia who designed the hotel when it was refurbished in 2006. It was originally part of the Place De La Reine Margot before becoming the Pavilion d’Armour in the early 19th century. The sense of eclectic charm fills every room. From the entrance through to the lounge and bar area you’re confronted by lavish flowing silk, satin, mood lighting, leopard skin-patterned carpets, rich colours everywhere. At each turn you’re drawn deeper into another world, away from the hustle and bustle of the Parisian streets. Late afternoon I step out to stroll along the Seine, trying not to get drenched by the downpour, but looking forward to returning to my cosy retreat for the evening. A few minutes’ walk in the other direction and you’re in the thick of Left bank café culture- the legendary
establishments such as the Deux Magots and Lippo, where existentialists Sartre and Simone De Beauvoir hung out.
They seemed to take it in their stride that the hotel’s cultural importance continues to draw global interest.
My sixth-floor room was both comfortable and beautiful- decked out in sumptuous curtains and velvet carpets. Although the rooms are luxuriously finished, each with an individual design, they are highly practical, and my bed provided a wonderful night’s sleep.
But with the mid-morning sunshine beckoning me to visit some of Paris’s best-known art galleries, I decided to head out. The hotel’s excellent location meant I was able to stroll to the Louvre and the Musee d’Orsay within a few minutes. The cathedral of Notre Dame is more like a 20-minute walk away.
Fully refreshed, I started the day on my balcony, which presented a great view of the Paris skyline, its rooftops now picked out in glorious sunshine. A table and chair offered the chance of an outdoor coffee before starting the day. Breakfast in the restaurant, a well-known Michelin-starred institution, was also of the highest quality in a room decked in the style of a Parisian salon, complete with glass roof. I went for eggs benedict, washed down with more great coffee, admiring the small but cleverly arranged garden outside. The hotel was busy, a television crew was shooting a programme about Wilde, but the staff didn’t cease to be attentive for one moment.

Leaving L’Hotel feels like stepping back from fantasy into reality, away from a masterpiece of eclectic style into the heart of the throbbing city. But even a short stay will make you feel you have connected with old Paris, leaving you sufficiently enriched to keep you going until your next visit. L’Hotel is offering a Winter Getaway discount of 30% until the end of March, if you’re thinking of staying soon, and next month the hotel is launching a new food concept called Wildes Lounge, combining a host of local produce, charcuterie, and small plates in a sharing style.

While the coffee praliné, in the season’s heart shape, celebrates Chef Nicolas Cloiseau’s favorite café in St Germain des Près, the citrus notes of grapefruit and elderberry mixed with bergamot tea and dark chocolate are an ode to Jardin du Luxembourg. The champagne – stripped of its alcohol content – and peach confit milk chocolate bonbon is inspired by the countless Bellini’s served in Montmatre on any given day and the silky dark chocolate ganache invites this season’s lovers to enjoy a night at the Opera. Exclusively available at Café Antonia.

GREG NORMAN GOLF, BAHAMAS, AND AUSTRALIA’S WILDFIRES
| BY TIM COTRONEO
In 1988, Greg Norman enjoyed one of his finest years on the world’s golf stage with seven victories covering four countries. This was the same year Norman discovered the 700 islands and cays that make up the Bahamas.
N
orman found the Bahamas to be a blissful scuba, fishing, and boating escape from the professional golf tour. In 2003, The Shark designed Sandals Emerald Bay Golf Course on the 37-mile-long island of Great Exuma. This 7,000-yard championship layout featuring seven ocean holes became an integral part of his design portfolio that includes 100 courses worldwide. On January 12, 2020, Norman returned to Great Exuma as an ambassador for the Korn Ferry Tour’s first event of the year, the Bahamas Great Exuma Classic. The Golf Hall of Famer was kind enough to sit down and discuss golf, his love for the Bahamas, and his partnership with the Australian Bushfire Relief Fund. YOU’VE HAD A LONG HISTORY WITH GREAT EXUMA AND THE BAHAMAS. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THESE ISLANDS THAT APPEALS TO YOU?
I first came to Great Exuma in the late 80s to scuba and fish. When I discovered the marina possibilities here for yachting, I thought this was a perfect destination. The island now has direct flights to the Exuma International Airport. When you add up the fishing, the marina, the airport, and golf, I’m in heaven. SANDALS EMERALD BAY RESORT HAS HOSTED THE TOURNAMENT HERE IN GREAT EXUMA FOR FOUR YEARS. HOW DID YOUR RELATIONSHIP EVOLVE WITH BUTCH STEWART OF SANDALS?
Sandals Emerald Bay Resort is where I first met Butch. I found that I really liked his spirit. We are both fiercely protective of our brands. Now I work with his son, Adam, and we have a great business synergy between us. FOR THE KORN FERRY TOUR FANS AND PLAYERS WHO HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED SANDALS EMERALD BAY GOLF COURSE, WHAT CAN THEY EXPECT?
First of all, the resort ambiance that accompanies golf is amazing. You’ve got the mile-long white sand beach, the neighboring marina, and Great Exuma is such a great place to just chill out. This is a unique destination. As for golf, with the trade winds here the players on the Korn Ferry event will need to adjust the flight of their ball. The challenge is that you need to know your game. The best part about playing at Emerald Bay is enjoying what you see between shots. AS A DESIGNER, WHAT GOES THROUGH YOUR MIND WHEN CREATING A COURSE THAT IS BOTH KIND TO THE RECREATIONAL GOLFER AND STILL CHALLENGING FOR THE PROFESSIONAL?
A hard golf course is the easiest course to design. The toughest design is a course that is balanced. I always ask the developer, “What do you want?” The original owner said to make Emerald Bay a tournament course. Transitioning from the Emerald Bay front nine to the back nine is like playing two different courses. The front side is inland and more insulated from the wind. On the back nine you have the wind, the beautiful ocean holes, and the residential development. My advice for the recreational golfer is to choose the right tees. WHAT KIND OF SURPRISES DID YOU DISCOVER WHEN YOU FIRST SURVEYED OR WALKED THROUGH THE PROPERTY?
30 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2020
During the design and construction process of all my courses, I always visit several times. I’m gauging the wind and clearing virgin land. At Emerald Bay, I wore heavy boots and cleared brush with a machete. Here in the Bahamas we have two eco-systems to take into consideration, the mangroves and the Exuma Sound. Ultimately, I look to see what Mother Nature gives us. THERE ARE SO MANY BEAUTIFUL OCEAN HOLES ON THE BACK NINE OF SANDALS EMERALD BAY. IS THERE ONE WHERE YOU PIN YOUR SHOULDERS BACK AND SAY, “THIS IS A GREAT GOLF HOLE?”
There are many amazing holes at Emerald Bay, so that’s a hard question to answer. I think the Par 5, 572-yard, 15th hole is a great golf hole. From the time you drive the golf ball to your arrival on the green, you can see Sandals resort in the distance. You view the resort, the beautiful beach, the setting sun, and maybe you’re thinking about a cocktail. It’s all about enjoying your journey as you head home. YOUR NATIVE AUSTRALIA IS EXPERIENCING DEVASTING WILDFIRES. WHAT CAN PEOPLE DO TO HELP?
Australia is in desperate need of our support. What’s needed most during this unprecedented crisis are cash donations. I have coordinated with former Ambassador John Berry and the AAA to establish the Australian Bushfire Relief Fund. We can send a strong signal to our friends in Australia that the international community is there during their time of need. By donating through this fund, donations will support the Australian Red Cross fire response. https://www.sandals.com/emerald-bay/ https://www.pgatour.com/korn-ferry-tour.html http://www.americanaustralian.org/austra ian-bushfire-relief-fund/ bdglobalsports.com

A RECORD YEAR FOR WATCHES AT
sotheby‘s | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS
L
ast year saw the highest annual total in Sotheby’s history for watch sales, with a 22% increase from 2018. Driven-by record prices, and enthusiasm generated among international collectors, auction sales topped $109 million. “This has been a historic year for our team, reflective of the ever-growing fascination with watches around the world,” said Sam Hines, Worldwide Head of Sotheby’s Watches. “Propelled by the sales of exceptional prop-
erty, careful sourcing and fast-expanding online sales, these results prove that, for many collectors, watches transcend the pure function of timekeeping. The appearance of masterpieces by horological pioneers, such as George Daniels’ record-breaking “Space Traveler”, also has a spin--off effect on all levels of the market, bringing people to fully appreciate the vision, tradition, exceptional craftsmanship and technical prowess that can be found in a watch.”
Record for a 17th-Century Watch: A masterpiece of enamel, Jehan Cremsdorff’s extraordinary gold, enamel and diamond-set verge watch, realized $2.7m. When this watch last appeared at auction in 1986, it took collectors by storm, soaring to CHF $1.8 million ($998,336) - then the highest price for any pocket watch ever sold at auction.
32 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2020
Pocket watches stole the show this year with “Masterworks of time”, one of the most important collections of timepieces remaining in private hands, setting many landmarks. With two additional auctions scheduled in 2020, the first wave of auctions has already brought $15.8 million, thereby surpassing the low estimate for the entire 800-watch strong collection (est. $15-27m). Two of the highest prices of the year were achieved in London in July: World record for a timepiece by an independent watchmaker and an English watch: George Daniels’ legendary “Space Traveler I” rocketed to a skyhigh $4.6m, over 30 times the price set by the watch 31 years ago. Conceived to honor the astronauts that the great watchmaker so admired, this is one of the most technically accomplished watches of all time.
TIMEPIECES
Online-only Sales have doubled in value since 2018. Many of these were driven by innovative thematic and partner sales. For example, in February, an IWC Big Pilot’s watch that was worn by Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper while attending and performing at the 91st Academy Awards ceremony, sold for $75,000. Proceeds went to the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Youth Foundation.
A possibly unique and previously unknown Cosmograph Daytona, reference 16528 in yellow gold with red dial and suspended logo, circa 1990 more than double the pre-sale low estimate to achieve US$541,200 in Hong Kong in October. Made circa 1968, Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona, reference 6239 in yellow gold sold for US$515,500 in Geneva in November 2019.
Record for a contemporary clock by Cartier: The “Le Temple Chinois au Dragon” mystery clock, made for the Chinese market in 1989, soared to US$1.03m in Hong Kong in April 2019. A highlight of the “Masterworks of Time” sale in Geneva in November, a gold, enamel and diamond-set hour striking musical double singing bird cage with timepiece made by Frères Rochat realized US$1.01m. Created for the Chinese market circa 1815, it was one of just three of this type ever made (pictured). Record for a clock by Vacheron Constantin: a jewel-like Art Deco timepiece, circa 1926, also part of the “Masterworks of Time” collection achieved US$667,467 in London on July 2019. Record for a Cartier Comet Clock: a superb example in agate, diamonds and enamel from circa 1925 brought $350,000 in New York in June 2019.

RACHEL CANNON DESIGNING FOR INTROVERTS
| BY NATALIE KING Interiors by Rachel Cannon. Photos by Jessie Preza
Interior designer, Rachel Cannon, is making the case for a quiet room, and doing it with style. Her interiors are saturated in gorgeous color, with interesting art, meaningful accessories and designated spaces for people to have a quiet area to call their own. As much of new construction is centered on open floor plans, Rachel is focusing on introverts and the need for some people to have a space to unwind and recharge.
W
e talked about designing for introverts, about investing in quality and the effect of living in a space that is truly inspiring. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO CREATE A HOME THAT IS BOTH AESTHETICALLY PLEASING AND WELL-FUNCTIONING?
My ideal client has always been professionals with demanding schedules (a lot like me) and adding the element of introversion into that profile has truly expanded the way I think about the influence of our environment on our ability to work and live at our highest level. As an introvert myself, I can attest to the fact that by and large, our culture promotes extroverted tendencies - from the classroom (participation points), to the work environment (clusters of desks), to the home (completely open floor plans). Introverts are told to “speak up” and “put yourself out there” and at home, families are expected to congregate in the huge shared area that is the living room, foyer, dining room, and kitchen - but this isn’t how many of us achieve deep focus to be our most creative or healthiest. I truly believe that the next big trend in interior design will be creating spaces that honor and nurture the dynamics between people, whether it’s co-workers, students, or families. I believe every home should have a Quiet Room, where people like me can retreat to process our day, recharge our internal batteries,
and recover from the toll of functioning in a world that’s designed for extroverts to succeed. WHAT AREAS OF THE HOME DO YOU FIND THAT CLIENT’S NEED THE MOST HELP WITH?
A great design takes the entire home into consideration. Just like a car must be designed as a whole, your home must be designed as a whole to fully function in a way that creates ease and reliability. You wouldn’t buy a car based on the front fender alone, and you can’t really get everything you need if you’re piece-mealing your home design together. So even when clients come to us for a kitchen remodel, we often address the problems in the whole home with our design, and then they have a road map to cleaning up the stressors it’s causing. They may choose to phase the project out, but I feel it’s my job to call attention to the ways the whole space must improve to make the investment of design really valuable. DO YOU HAVE TIPS TO HELP CREATE A SPACE FOR FINANCIAL HEALTH IN THE HOME? FOR EXAMPLE, AN AREA WHERE YOU CAN CHECK IN AND ACCESS ACCOUNTS, PAY BILLS AND FEEL INSPIRED TO DO FUTURE PLANNING?
Absolutely. As we forge this new path of the Quiet Room, I am leaning on my own needs as an introverted entrepreneur with a demanding schedule to guide how I can analyze homes to maximize what they provide for us. I see the Quiet Room as a place where, in addition to recharging our batteries, we can also work without interruptions or distractions to achieve deep focus - something financials definitely require to be maintained for optimum “health.” WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF A SPACE THAT IS LACKLUSTER BUT FUNCTIONING OK VERSUS A SPACE THAT IS WELL EDITED AND INSPIRING?
Just okay means there will always be an undercurrent of dissatisfaction, or a deep yearning for things to be better. It’s a constant reminder of
34 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2020
what we’d like to accomplish, especially when we internalize those thoughts and tell ourselves things like “I can’t afford to improve my space.” We create something called an Imposition Mentality - which is a state we create in which we are powerless to change our circumstances. The difference between that and living in a space that is well edited and inspiring is that the latter will empower you to be the hero in your own narrative. Thoughtful design really can be that powerful...especially when it’s about more than just the cache of using a particular fabric or the provenance of an antique. CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT A FAVORITE PROJECT SO FAR?
My favorite so far is 100% my own kitchen. I knew when I bought my house that I would remodel it eventually. It wasn’t the worst kitchen, but it was “okay” (and remember what that can do to our mental health!). Designing and remodeling the space was so incredibly rewarding - and although I didn’t design the rest of the home at the same time, I began like many of my clients with Phase I (the kitchen). The difference between walking into my old, tiny, dark kitchen, and attempting to cook and be organized in that cramped space versus walking into an expanded space that is flooded with natural light and is set up to function for the way my brain works and what my muscle memory is...life changing. Life affirming! It feels like a breath of fresh air every time I walk in there. Opening the door at the end of the day, or getting my first cup of coffee are joyful experiences, now, as opposed to the mental anguish I’d feel before when I’d have to put blinders on just to get through mundane activities. Now, I look forward to the whole house bringing me that kind of restorative feeling security, peace, rest. Our home environments should do that for us, no matter how big or small, and if yours isn’t, the investment in working with a professional interior designer who is skilled at listening and evaluating your needs is worth every penny for the tranquility you’ll experience in the aftermath.

The process of design, especially in the holistic way that you work, is so interesting. How do you begin each project? I believe in letting the client communicate their needs and desires fully - and often, they don’t have the words to do so. We create private Pinterest boards that we share with them and for the first two weeks of our process, we let them pin their favorites without adding to the ideas. I’m looking for common threads in what they choose, and since they’re typically having to go through their own boards to select their top pins, they’re editing themselves in the process, rather than me doing that for them. Once I start to see the hidden things they’re liking (usually without them even noticing), we begin to pull ideas and design elements that align with that vision. Most of them are amazed at how accurately we can pinpoint their likes and dislikes. From there, we want to dig deep and analyze the way the space needs to support their lifestyle, which I think is equally as important as the aesthetics, if not more. Can you talk a bit about color and the effect that it has on mood? What are your favorite color combinations to work with? I am obsessed with color, and the more unusual of a combination the client is willing to take on, the better! I think the trick to making color work is by avoiding the trends altogether. Select colors YOU love, and disregard what you’re being fed on social media. If you make the conscious choice to step off of the trend bandwagon, and fully embrace your own preferences, your rooms have a much better chance at standing the test of time, than if you simply mimic the latest fad on Instagram. Our homes are our most valuable investments, and we need to treat them as such - so forego the disposable design mentality and start living with what you love. It will absolutely change your life. Describe the key elements of an interior that is fulfilling? I think the most personally fulfilling rooms begin by being authentic. I know that’s a buzzword that’s lost a little of its meaning, but what I mean is letting your own unique quirks and interests take

center stage. Ignoring bad advice that tells you that one way is “the right way” to design. There used to be an adage that “every room needs a touch of black” but I’ve never liked that kind of thinking. My dad hates black, so he would fixate on the one black thing in a room and it would really get under his skin. Next, I think we need to eschew any notion that we all need to have homes that look similar. Good taste prevails, always, but it comes in many forms. I can appreciate a Palm Springs mid-century modern just as much as I can swoon over a Georgian traditional in Charlotte. A fulfilling interior might combine the best of both worlds (for me, definitely). And finally, quality is worth waiting for. Fast design is just like fast food...it might serve an immediate purpose, but the long-term effects aren’t great. If you can’t afford to buy everything at one time, stick to your design plan and buy it one piece at a time. Haste makes waste, and it would be better to buy one top-quality item once, rather than buying 6 low-quality items that get destroyed and constantly need to be replaced. I love a few points on your podcast Episode #15 A Case for the Quiet Room where you said, «We’ve eliminated walls and become a nation of noise making devices and we wonder why we’re all frazzled and fried all the time...” to describe the need for a quiet space to give ourselves the opportunity to truly recharge and enjoy our time at home. This makes so much sense. You then add, “You don’t have to let this room meet anyone else’s approval – but yours” which is a powerful concept in the visual age that we live in. For people that have been really tuned in to interiors through social media, it could be hard for them to take a step back and really consider their own taste and personal style. Are there tips that you use when trying to help a client find their personal style, and to see what they are truly drawn to? Thank you for listening to the podcast! I would reiterate my comments above, about getting off the trend bandwagon. If we think about it, we are bombarded with images that entice us to buy, buy, buy. You can’t be on Instagram for more than 60 seconds without seeing several ads, many with links to buy right from the app. This is consumerism, not design, and we can make the decision not to be swayed by it. If we returned to old school values, which taught us to buy the best we could afford, buy very few things, and take care of them so we could live with them for a long period of time, we’d all be the better for it. Make a conscious choice to prioritize quality. If you don’t know what good quality is, ask someone to help you understand it. Stop watching home renovation shows with completely unrealistic budgets and timelines. Finding your own personal style takes some time, but it can be done (not by taking a quiz on a website that also wants to sell you more stuff you don›t need). Use the same method we use for clients with their Pinterest boards. Start to look for the links between everything you like. Maybe you always pin blue rooms, or maybe you pin rooms that feature banquettes in the breakfast room. You›ll start to see what you gravitate to, and if you pin it more than 3 or 4 times, there›s a good chance that it›s «your style.» Ultimately, you have to live in the home when it›s all said and done, so it needs to be decorated and designed to suit YOU, and nobody else. Not your mom, your neighbors, your best friend. The highest compliment would be for someone to walk into a client›s home and say, “OH my god, this is so YOU!” 38 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2020

ANGIE ROSE HIP HOP’S HOTTEST NEW ARTIST WITH A PURPOSE | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS PHOTO COURTESY OF STEVEN TAYLOR
From humble beginnings in the Bronx, Angie Rose has stayed true to her love of rap music with her latest single release ‘Infatuation’. Not only does she thrive on musical instruments of all types, she’s also got a big heart by helping hurricane victims through her purposeful foundation, The Unstoppable Foundation. ANGIE, TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.
I was born and raised in the same neighborhood in the Bronx throughout my life. I went to different schools all over the Bronx until I graduated from Truman High School right back in my neighborhood Co-op City. IT MUST HAVE BEEN A BUSY HOUSEHOLD, BEING THE YOUNGEST OF TEN CHILDREN.
It was actually a pretty quiet home. We’re a blended family, plus being the baby, the sibling closest to me in age is still over ten years older than me. Although I did have one big brother living with me until I was eight years old, he is actually the reason that I rap! After that I spent most of my time at home with notebooks and headphones. WHEN DID YOU START YOUR VOCAL TRAINING?
As a kid, I sang in church with my friends, and in middle school I sang in chorus class. The next year I transferred to a new school and got to sing in a citywide choir for a show in Carnegie Hall. I’ve never had any formal training, but I was always just that kid humming or writing, and always the kid that ended up behind any piano or drum set they so happened to have around. YOUR PARENTS ARE PASTORS. WHAT INFLUENCE DID THAT HAVE ON YOU?
A ton. My parents have been an example of
servitude and love to our community for as long I can remember. They taught me what I think is still one of my favorite lessons: “Being a messenger for God has nothing to do with eloquence, but it has everything to do with love.” YOU WERE KNOWN AS FELICIA KEYS.
This is hilarious!!! So long story short, little Angie loved braids, playing the piano and singing in church on youth Sundays. My best friend’s big brother is my favorite bully (lol!). He coined the term Felicia Keys. OF ALL THE GENRES OUT THERE, WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE ON HIP-HOP MUSIC?
To be honest, I was just a little girl who thought her big brother was the coolest person in the world. I watched him write for hours and so I wanted to do the same. As I got older being the girl that could rap became a part of my reputation; when I got the opportunity to get into a studio, I just did what I knew how! DO YOU WRITE YOUR OWN SONGS?
Absolutely! I have recently experienced the beauty of true collaboration though, and I’m all the way down for that! Perspective is a beautiful gift in art.
hurricanes hit, I wanted to help the victims, but as an indie artist at the time, money was just a nice word (lol). So, I took to social media and said for all orders that came in we would donate 100% of the profits to organizations helping in the affected areas. We are still doing the same thing today. AND THE UNSTOPPABLE FOUNDATION.
The Unstoppable Foundation was born the day Hurricane Maria touched Puerto Rico. We helped the states affected prior, but when the storm touched down there, I knew lives would be changed forever and I had to help. I called on local community leaders and pastors for help and in less than two weeks, organized a relief concert that brought out 500 people and $5000. The next we took flight to Puerto Rico and we have not stopped helping since. WHAT IS THE MESSAGE BEHIND YOUR SONG ‘INFATUATION’?
“Infatuation” in a grand sense is a letter to distraction from purpose. I’ve learned that anything that distracts me from purpose is only an infatuation and therefore has to be let go. But I learned this lesson from dating a boy that just “aint the one for me”. AND ‘FIGHT LIKE A MAN’?
ENCOURAGED BY REAL LIFE EVENTS?
Inspired by! I always say I try my best to live with my eyes wide open. The lives and stories around me paint the type of pictures music is made from.
“Fight Like A Man” is a song written from the stronger sides of me, the sides where insecurity and fear take a backseat to purpose. It’s my story of being able to be exactly who I am, whether that makes sense to others or not.
YOU STUDIED PHILOSOPHY IN COLLEGE.
WHO INSPIRES YOU MUSICALLY?
I did! It was actually one of the best things I think I ever did. It made me fall in love with learning.
All the great artists that dive into their craft without fear. As a child, the sounds of Tupac, Mary J Blige, Jay-Z and Kirk Franklin filled my ears. As an adult I’ve been inspired by too many to name.
TELL US ABOUT UNSTOPPABLE THREADZ.
It started as a resource for what is now the Unstoppable Foundation. In 2017 when the

AND HOPEFULLY FOR PLEASURE TOO. WHICH PLACES HAVE LEFT A LASTING IMPRESSION AND WHY?
The most obvious answer would probably be my island Puerto Rico but, I got to visit Mexico on missions in college. To tell you the truth, I haven’t been the same since. IS THERE ANYWHERE SPECIFIC YOU WOULD LOVE TO TRAVEL TO?
I’m dying to sit by a pyramid in Egypt and walk the streets of Jerusalem. WHERE IS HOME?
The Boogie Down Bronx! (lol) I LIKE YOUR SAYING ‘BE TRUE TO WHO YOU ARE’.
Probably the hardest in the world, and yet probably one of the most gratifying. PARTING THOUGHTS?
I never thought I could actually live off words and melodies. I’ve always believed in a God that could make dreams come true though. I’m grateful that I get to tell these stories, I’m grateful people want to hear them.

PARIS COUTURE
SPRING/SUMMER 2020 | BY GERALD
If you are a fashion inclined individual at some point you probably have heard of flamboyant pieces of clothing called “couture” The uber priced items that are paintaklingly made in the form of “high sewing” (Haute Couture) Haute couture - can be traced back to the court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette’s reign, but it wasn’t formalized in France until English born designer Charles Worth burst onto the scene and opened his Paris atelier in 1858. It was Worth who founded the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne to regulate the craft of haute couture. During World War II there was an attempt to bring haute couture to Berlin, to which the President of the Chambre Syndicale at the time, Lucien Lelong, proclaimed, “It is in Paris or nowhere.” Years after the couture collections are revealed twice a year. S/S in January and F/W in July. Contrary to many beliefs couture shows include both daywear and evening wear. The Cost - Depending on the level of embellishment a day wear couture piece usually starts at around $20,000, though it varies on the brand (Chanel Haute Couture usually cost between $40,000 - $80,000, while bridal can easily cost $100,000 - $150,000, depending on the level of embellishments. As Paris “couture week” came to a close in January 2020, we look at some of the most notable creations by designer.

hyundai‘s new air taxi | BY JARONE ASHKENAZI
Last year, Hyundai leaked that they would be announcing a new air taxi concept at the Consumer Electronics Show which took place earlier this month. During the show in Las Vegas, the full-scale prototype was on display and announced that they will be partnering with Uber for its promised – the company announced their ambitions in 2016 with the “Uber Elevate” white paper – air taxi network.
N
amed the S-A1, the electric-powered PAV (Personal Air Vehicle) features an egg-shaped cabin with two tilt-rotors on the tail and 10 other rotors distributed around the cabin. Designed to take off vertically, transition to wing-borne lift and then back to vertical flight to land, it has a range of 60 miles for up to four passengers. Initially the taxis will be manually driven by a pilot, but once further advancements to relevant technologies are fully developed, they plan to be autonomous. The S-A1 has a cruising speed of 180nmph and the ability to fly at altitudes of approximately 1,000 to 2,000 feet above ground.
The smaller, electric-powered rotors produce less noise than a standard helicopter and will only require about five to seven minutes for recharging. The South Korean car company also unveiled an eco-friendly landing hub for ground transportation to and from the station. Although they are the first global automaker to join forces with Uber for its Uber Elevate campaign, Hyundai has yet to conduct any test flights nor announced how much the service will cost.

SEADREAM YACHTS Service and Gourmet Cuisine Supreme | BY TRACY BEARD
Leave your responsibilities behind and plan a trip with SeaDream Yacht Club where the officers and crew intuitively understand the needs of each guest. Impeccable service begins with friendly customer care at booking and continues through disembarkation. Whether it is carrying drinks and plates to the table, escorting guests into the dining room or coordinating arrangements for a land excursion, the staff aboard SeaDream are friendly, efficient and professional.
THE YACHTS
LIFE ON BOARD
SeaDream Yacht Club cruises currently consist of two identical mega yachts, each boasting 56 well-appointed staterooms with unobstructed ocean views, marble-lined bathrooms and multi-jet showers. The public spaces are luxurious and yet comfortable. Yachts accommodate a maximum of 112 guests and 95 crew members creating an almost 1:1 ratio. These numbers optimize the ability to provide exceptional service in every area onboard and ashore. ALL-INCLUSIVE
Each day aboard SeaDream affords opportunities to experience something exciting or to rest and relax in the opulent surroundings. Guests can elect to exercise in the fitness center, participate in yoga and tai chi classes, sleep overnight on one of the fabulous Balinese dream beds, or even work on their swing in the golf simulator. In the evening, vacationers enjoy sipping a cocktail or a glass of wine at the Top of the Yacht bar where talented bartenders make it their mission to create drinks personalized to individual tastes.
SeaDream trips are all-inclusive. Passengers enjoy gourmet meals, select premium brand liquors and a daily selection of wines that accompany both lunch and dinner. Items from the in-suite room service menu are available 24 hours a day, and gratuities are also included.
In port exciting adventures await. The celebrated “Champagne and Caviar Splash” event takes place on all Caribbean trips. The crew and officers serve guests bubbles and caviar while they wade in the sea. In approved ports, the staff opens the yacht’s marina and guests can test their skills with wave runners,

kayaks, personal sailboats, snorkel gear, and standup paddleboards. Mountain bikes are available for adventurous guests to explore ports, and return guests rave about the crew-led hikes and bike tours. On occasion, the yacht’s chef hosts shopping tours. MY CARIBBEAN EXPERIENCE My daughter Brittney and I recently spent a week aboard SeaDream II. Our journey began in Puerto Rico and ended in St. Martin. The family-owned yacht company hires well-trained staff that instinctively know how to read guest personalities. They understand when to be serious and proper and when to let loose and be playful. We delighted in their humor. The more we got to know them, the funnier they became even to the point of acting offended if we chose to sit in a section other than theirs on any given day. GOURMET CUISINE The dishes served on SeaDream are both tasty and picture-worthy. Executive Chef Tomasz Kozlowski oversees the culinary service on both yachts. He studied at the Le Cordon Bleu and trained in Paris, Barcelona, Berlin and Warsaw. He began his career as executive chef at SeaDream Yacht Club when it launched in 2001 after working on another cruise line for a few years. Chef Kozlowski told me, “Being a chef on a cruise ship is very different from being on land. The owners

at SeaDream give me the freedom to do what I want; it just must be the best. The quality and flavors must be excellent, but the dishes do not have to be complicated.” Chef Kozlowski’s goal is to make people happy with his food, and he is thrilled to take special requests. Sometimes people ask for dishes that they have never tried but want to experience. He said, “Sometimes I have to Google it. I don’t copy what someone else does, but I create what I think would be best. I rarely take things off the menu because the repeat clients expect certain things, but I am always adding, changing and twisting dishes to make them better.” Chef Kozlowski knows that people eat more on vacation. He shared that he tries to make his dishes lighter but still tasty. He doesn’t use flour in his soups or sauces, and he omits butter and cream in his soups. The portion sizes are smaller so that guests can enjoy a variety of courses. He said, “Quality certified ingredients are essential for flavor and to prevent anyone from getting sick.” The food on SeaDream is delicious. Two of my favorites were the potato gnocchi with creamy pesto sauce served in a parmesan tuile and the marinated grilled cauliflower served on a pumpkin and carrot mousse with roasted pumpkin seeds. Brittney loved the oven-baked duck breast with potato blini and red cabbage. PORTS OF CALL My favorite port was The Baths on Virgin Gorda. We tendered to the island and then rode in an open-air bus for a quick 15-minute ride. It was an easy 15-minute hike to Devil’s Beach where the crystal blue waters sparkled under the glorious sunshine. Later, we hiked through “caves” in knee-deep water and traversed a series of steps. We used rope handrails to guide us until we reached “the baths,” a geological wonder made of granite boulders that formed pools
of water in the sea next to the beach. We swam in the pools and then hiked back up the hill to enjoy a glass of rum punch at the restaurant. We snorkeled in Anguilla. Our 12-person speedboat boasted three large engines. Captain Jel was at the helm and Anna, our activities guide, accompanied the group. We stopped at three beaches to swim and snorkel. We began at Little Bay, which possesses the smallest beach on Anguilla. The teal blue sea glistened as we approached by boat, and the high cliffs peppered with cactus outcroppings loomed above us. The cliff wall buffered the sea creating gentle waters to explore. The waters at Shoal Beach were so clear that we could see the white sands below us wherever we swam. Sandy Beach was unique; it lies in the middle of the sea. The island is so low that vicious storms often sweep away its contents: a bar, umbrellas and lounge chairs. St Barts is a paradise for high-end shoppers. Not far from the docks, designer boutiques line the streets next to open-air eateries and bars. All adults visiting Nevis island need to stop at Sunshine’s Bar and indulge in their famous killer bee cocktail, a fruity drink made with rum and passion fruit. We were forewarned that one is enough if you plan to walk away unassisted. We booked a trip with Veronica Tours on St. Kitts. Veronica has lived on the island her entire life and in less than two hours she showed us her version of the island’s highlights. We loved the rain forest, and Timothy Hill provides a stunning view of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea at the same time. TREAT YOURSELF SeaDream Yacht Club cruises travel all over the world. If you are looking for exceptional service, exciting itineraries and excellent cuisine, book a trip on one of their yachts for a genuinely dreamy vacation. The staff will make you feel like a royal.

CHEFS
CHEF JUAN JOSÉ CUEVAS 1919 RESTAURANT | BY TRACY BEARD
A
s a seasoned journalist writing about fine wines, gourmet cuisine and luxury travel, people often assume I know or have heard about everyone in these industries. I am familiar with many notable chefs and winemakers, and I have visited numerous amazing places. However, when you consider the vast number of incredible chefs, divine beverages, and opulent destinations in the world, how could anyone know them all? Recently, I traveled to Puerto Rico with my daughter Brittney, and we dined at 1919 Restaurant in the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel. It was my pleasure to meet Executive Chef Juan José Cuevas, an internationally renowned chef with an impressive list of prestigious culinary awards. Although well-known to many, he was a spectacular new find for me. Chef Cuevas, a native of Puerto Rico, took the position of executive chef at 1919 Restaurant in 2012 upon his return to the island. A 20-year legacy of significant accomplishments in both the United States and abroad accompanied him. Chef Cuevas’s Culinary Career Chef Cuevas be-
gan his culinary journey in the states as an honors graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. While at the Institute, Chef Cuevas often worked with school instructors. He once served as a translator for a guest chef, Pedro Subijana, the chef/owner of Arkelare, a three-star Michelin restaurant in San Sebastián, Spain. In 1995, Chef Subijana invited Chef Cuevas to come and work with him. This connection was the first of many significant encounters that opened doors for Chef Cuevas’s incredible culinary journey. After his time with Chef Subijana, Chef Cuevas returned to the states to work as poissonnier, entremetier, and saucier at The Dining Room at the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco under the tutelage of Chef Sylvain Portay. Over the years, Chef Cuevas learned from and worked with many great chefs around the world. He expanded his knowledge under Tracy Jardin at Jardinière and did a brief externship in Barcelona at the threestar Michelin restaurant El Raco de Can Fabes under Chef Santi Santamaria. He continued his culinary ascent while working for illustrious Chef

Alain Ducasse at the Essex House under Didier Elena and as sour-chefde cuisine under Christian Delouvrier at Lespinasse. The restaurant received a four-star rating from The New York Times during Cuevas’s two-year term.
At 1919 Restaurant, Chef Cuevas creates fresh contemporary cuisine using hand-selected local products. He works diligently with Sommelier Luis Simone to taste food and wine to put together the perfect pairings for his tasting menus.
Chef Cuevas later collaborated with Chef Dan Barber at Blue Hill Restaurant in New York. During their four-year partnership, the restaurant received a Michelin star and a three-star rating by The New York Times. Chef Cuevas continued his culinary climb working as chef-decuisine at Michelin-star-rated Restaurant 81. He then moved on to the position of executive chef at the Pluckemin Inn, where they received a three-star rating from The New York Times and the AAA Four-Diamond Award in 2010. Each accolade is significant, but Chef Cuevas says he is most proud of the Chef de l’Avenir (Chef of the Future) Award in 2009 from the International Academy of Gastronomy and the New York Times review of Blue Hill Restaurant.
My dinner at 1919, one of the two top restaurants in Puerto Rico, was a treat. Brittney and I began with a few glasses of Cava, Spain’s version of Champagne, followed by an assortment of canapes: a caramelized onion-truffle empanadilla, potato-morcilla cake and quail eggs, and a bacalao-shrimp croquette.
Chef Cuevas is grateful to all his mentors. I asked him, “Which chefs were most influential in your rise in the industry, and how did they impact your life?” He said, “l learned everything from Sylvain Portay. Alain Ducasse taught me perfection, discipline, techniques and respect for product. Santi Santamaria cultivated a love within me for his region, a renewed passion, a knowledge of food history and even more discipline. Dan Barber encouraged a connection with farming and inspired my resolve for farm-to-table dining.” Chef Cuevas said, “These chefs were buff and amazing. The gave me so much information, rules and discipline, which helped me to become the chef I am today.” DINNER AT 1919 At 1919 Restaurant, Chef Cuevas utilizes his natural talent, friendly personality and knowledge to make the dining experience exciting and appealing for everyone. He loves being the executive chef at the restaurant. He enjoys teaching his staff and delights in seeing how he and his team make guests smile with their food. He shared that the hardest part of each day is the lack of time; there is never enough. I asked him if he were on Iron Chef America and he could select the secret ingredient, what would it be? He answered, “Eggplant.” He exclaimed that he would make salads, garnishes, canapes and even a rum caramelized eggplant dessert with chocolate cremaux and ricotta ice cream. 56 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2020
We savored a light cucumber-coconut gazpacho followed by fingerling potatoes with osetra caviar, truffle vinaigrette and chervil. Next, we dined on tuna-hiramaza crudo with wasabi pearls that burst open and flooded my taste buds with mouthwatering spice. The local chayote, grapefruit and goat cheese salad arrived with crispy Brussels sprouts and a tasty Thai vinaigrette dressing. A perfectly cooked scallop was served “a la plancha” with a mussel, two clams and a fennel-spiced sauce. The local dorado with aromatic lentils and tamarind-red-wine jus whispered India, and the root vegetable and ricotta ravioli were scrumptious. The roasted duck with chickpeas, zucchini-pistachio jus and the side of potato churros were simply outstanding. We ended the meal with coconut sorbet and local strawberries, lemon curd pavlova, and a pine nut caramel tart with white chocolate and tahini vanilla ice cream. Each course came perfectly matched with a delicious glass of wine, and Chef Cuevas visited the table twice to chat with us. It is no wonder that his career has flourished. He is instantly likable, extraordinarily talented and emanates love for Puerto Rican food and all that the island has to offer. When I asked him if he had a future goal, he said, “I would like to become a sommelier.” Chef Cueva, Sommelier Luis Simone, and the rest of the staff at 1919 were pleasant and knowledgeable. Visit the fantastic island of Puerto Rico. Enjoy the ocean view while dining at 1919 Restaurant, where you will discover delectable food and wine delivered in an opulent setting at the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel.

NAYARA TENTED CAMP
ARENAL VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK, COSTA RICA Having opened on December 20, 2019, Nayara Tented Camp is one of the first luxury camps in Central America. Located in the Arenal Volcano National Park, the year-round Camp is the brainchild of owner Leo Ghitis who was inspired by the luxury canvas lodges of Africa and Asia. The 21 air-conditioned accommodations, each generously sized at 1,496 square feet, have been built at a higher altitude on the hillside to provide unobstructed views of the volcano. Multigenerational travelers and like-minded groups can opt for a set of two identical tents that connect with a covered passageway while couples and privacy-seeking guests can book standalone units. Also dotted around two acres of rainforest at the peak of the mountain are seven interconnecting, private hot springs that can be enjoyed by six to 15 nature lovers.
The indoor/outdoor design of the Camp blends contemporary, barefoot-luxe touches and unique-to-location design features: a master suite created as a nod to traditional African safari style tents fused with a Costa Rican sense of place; canopy beds with a botanical headboard mural; private plunge pools fed by natural mineral hot springs; and double-head outdoor showers. The color palette aptly showcases tree bark tones, shades of green, and touches of leather. With the addition of the Camp, Nayara will consist of three properties, including Nayara Springs and Nayara Gardens, all of which are connected by footbridges. “With the opening of the Tented Camp, we are excited to boost Nayara’s presence in Costa Rica,” noted Leo Ghitis. “Luxury is in the details, and
our work in the last three years focused on every single design element to optimize a genuine sense of place. Our efforts included the reforesting of the surrounding area, increasing the number of Cecropia trees to further nurture our sloth sanctuary, and even custom-dying 8,000 meters of canvas for the tents.” Nature lovers can participate in sloth sanctuary tours and early morning bird-watching walks with Nayara’s expert nature guide and ‘Sloth Concierge’ Juan Pablo. Through Nayara’s reforestation of the area, the new tented camp will expand the property’s sloth sanctuary to over 1,000 Cecropia tress (the sloth’s main food source) from the current 300 trees that currently serve as a home to more than 15 sloths.

SPIRITS
Tequila Enemigo Mexican Revelation | BY SHAUN TOLSON
D
uring his first term of business school at the University of California Santa Barbara in 2012, British entrepreneur Robin Clough found himself sitting at a roadside café in Mexico. He was on a trip to visit the family of his Mexican friend and classmate, and during this pit stop the café’s owner offered Clough a taste of his own personal tequila. “I was apprehensive,” Clough recalls. “I had this preconception of tequila being this thing that comes out at 2
o’clock in the morning, or something that you do with lime and salt as a ritual punishment with your friends.” Clough may have been apprehensive, but the café’s owner was persistent and persuasive. “I tried some,” Clough says, “and the thing that I tasted that day just completely blew my mind. I was pretty well-versed in spirits in general, but with tequila I had never tried something that special or that unique. What I tried that
66 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2019
day was subtle and complex and something that you wanted to sip over a meal.” Once Clough learned that the revelatory spirit that he had just tried was only an average tequila by Mexican standards, he not only understood what a quality sipping tequila could be but also committed himself to producing one that would revolutionize Britain’s drinking culture and later enhance high-end tequila markets around the world.
SPIRITS
After a year spent sharing samples of that introductory tequila with his friends back home in England, Clough partnered with his Mexican friend and classmate—as well as another entrepreneurial friend in London—and together the trio set out to find a master distiller in Mexico who could work with them to create a unique tequila all their own. Three years later, in 2017, Clough and his team launched Tequila Enemigo, a brand whose name means enemy in Spanish and reflects its founders’ desires to challenge the status quo—specifically, according to Clough, the unfounded statements that major brands routinely make about the overall quality of their spirits. “We felt that the reason tequila historically had a negative reputation is that there were a lot of brands over-marketing their products,” says Clough, Enemigo’s CEO. “We want to be the enemy of that mis-marketing, and we’re letting the liquid speak for itself.” Fittingly, Enemigo has earned more spirits competition awards in the last two and a half years than any other tequila brand.
flavors, Enemigo’s extra añejo reveals its complexity the longer it sits on the palate. With patience, imbibers can coach out hints of bubblegum sweetness and black pepper. Equally appealing, this slightly-more-thanthree-year-old tequila finishes somewhat dry, which balances the spirit’s upfront sweetness. “The first 30 seconds after you try it, you can feel the flavor developing,” Clough says. “The agave comes and goes; the oak comes and goes; the hints of demerara come and go, but it’s still a tequila. “We always knew that we wanted to do something that was really different from what tequila is expected to be,” the 30-year-old continues, “and the moment that people have when they first try Enemigo is my favorite moment of my whole job. Everyone looks at me the same way that I looked at the owner of the roadside café in Mexico. But when they try it, I see their facial expression change. That moment that I had at that roadside café where my mind was blown, that’s something that we want everyone to have, even the most distinguished tequila drinker.”
Enemigo’s Añejo Cristallino ($70), which earned a double gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2019, is unapologetically agave forward—just as any tequila aficionado would desire—delivering bright herbaceous notes on the nose and palate, with a slight touch of spice on the finish. Yet, this velvety smooth añejo, which matures for more than a year in new, medium-charred American oak barrels, proves that appearances can be deceiving. A final, three-phase carbon-cellulose filtration process strips the liquid of all visual evidence of its lengthy cask maturation; however, distinctive and traditional añejo flavors remain, championed by prominent notes of vanilla (along with subtle hints of coconut), which mingle with those aforementioned herbaceous flavors from the agave. With this cristallino, Enemigo delivers the bright, crisp characteristics of traditional blanco tequilas, but it wraps them up in a sophisticated and silky package that warrants easy, languid sips. Enemigo’s Extra Añejo ($170), by contrast, is softer and more subdued, with a light body that allows its agave flavors to shine among the more robust tastes of caramel and butterscotch. An ideal summer sipper for those who seek a lighter, less-rich spirit still teeming with barrel-aged

eaning ‘place of stars’ in the local Shangaan language, the significance of this translation confirms that the
Manyeleti is the luminary on a variety of levels. When the Corbett family decided to build a lodge in the bush eighteen years ago, Tintswalo Safari Lodge was constructed, and through the years, it has been met with great fanfare by local visitors and tourists alike.
Daughter Lisa embarked on a successful empowerment program adjacent to the Manyeleti, with hard work being rewarded and recognized in a request to tender on a concession, where the ultimate outcome was to build a lodge.
Their adulation for the African bush was a fervent and fruitful basis for Tintswalo’s co-founders, Gaye and Ernest Corbett, together with Lisa and Warwick Goosen’s foray into the development of a luxury lodge in the Manyeleti, with a vested interest by the whole family.
“With our christening into the tourism industry,” Tintswalo Lodges CEO Lisa recalls, “we had little more than a dream of a safari lodge yet to be realized. Through our travels, I had developed an appreciation for luxury, and managed to convince my parents to upgrade 69 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2020
TRAVEL our tented camp fantasies to a 5-star lodge that would offer travelers the opportunity to enjoy every modern comfort and luxury in the heart of wildest Africa. From our tent in the Manyeleti camp, my husband Warwick and I broke ground and Tintswalo Safari Lodge was born in 2002.”
indulge in the perfectly prepared main course of slow cooked Springbok shank atop squashed new potatoes, with buttered baby vegetables, topped with fresh herb gremolata. To conclude my meal, the melt-in-my-mouth chocolate fondant with chocolate ice cream is enough to send me to chocoholic heaven.
My arrival at Tintswalo Safari Lodge is met by the most spectacular welcoming committee – a large herd of elephants enjoying a drink in front of the lodge’s dining deck. On hot days, the elephants have a wonderful muddy rollaround, especially the younger ones, with the mud acting as a sunscreen and a cooling down process.
Raised wooden walkways lead to the rooms and at night, guests are accompanied by a night porter as the area surrounding Tintswalo Safari Lodge is unfenced. We did come across an interesting visitor before supper, in the form of an African rock python. Fortunately, one of the guides removed this large non-venomous snake from the deck, much to everyone’s relief.
After a delicious lunch, prepared by chef Russell Schmidt and served on the deck by butler Orlando, consisting of a platter selection made up of beef kofta with minted yoghurt, chicken Caesar salad, mozzarella & spinach stuffed mushrooms, sun-dried tomato pasta salad, tomato, mozzarella & aubergine melanzanes and spiced pineapple salad, I am ready to be shown to my suite.
I’m finally able to admire the stylish interiors of my suite and relax on my sofa before having a cleansing shower with the fragrant Africology products. Retiring for the night under the soft white bedding and draped mosquito netting, I dream of what delights could be in store for the following day.
The accommodation options at Tintswalo Safa-ri Lodge consist of six Explorer suites, a Manor House and a Presidential suite. I am staying in the lovely Stanley suite, in remembrance to Sir Henry Morton Stanley, whose inherent claim to fame was locating the missing explorer Doctor David Livingstone. The now infamous phrase ‘Doctor David Livingstone I presume’ was uttered when Stanley found the ailing Liv-ingstone near Lake Tanganyika on November 10th, 1871. In tribute to this journalistic ex-plorer, guests will appreciate the lavish interiors which include a beautiful writing desk and an imposing bed. Before departing on my first game drive, High Tea is presented with delectable treats and beverages in the foyer of the dining area. Ranger Mark Hull introduces himself with tracker Domingo poised to make my safari wishes come true. Heading in a southerly direction, we find the Talamati lion pride just as the sun starts setting. There are fourteen magnificent specimen, ranging in varying ages with a few rambunctious youngsters wanting to play instead of sleeping like the adults are doing. After dark, they start moving and we follow them to a nearby watering hole where they line up to drink in groups of four. What an incredible sighting! Guests returning from a game drive have a choice to either freshen up before dinner or head straight to a gastronomic feast. I opt to dine immediately, and the food is superb. I skip the starter choice and am delighted to
The threat of rain seems like it might abate, but halfway through our game drive I ask Mark if he would mind returning to the lodge. The animals have also found shelter, even though it’s quite humorous that on this dreary day, all the grey animals would make their appearance – elephants, warthog, buffalo and to break the gloominess, a giraffe emerges out of nowhere! Breakfast is served inside the dining area and even the elephants, who are usually at the watering hole in front of the lodge only arrive once the rain has stopped. Following lunch and High Tea, four guests join us on the afternoon drive and this time, we spot vultures, a very pregnant zebra and the once-in-a-lifetime sighting of the Orpen male lion mating with the Koppies female. Dinner is once again a palate-pleasing affair. It is my last morning and everyone is very quiet on our morning drive as we have seen so much, what else could we possibly encounter? As we turn the corner, she comes into view, the Nompethu female leopard, her rosetted coat in stark contrast to the tree stump she is climbing to elevate her vantage point. She notices a few impalas in the distance, but they have already sensed her and make a hasty retreat. Back at the lodge, it is time to leave, but not before marveling at my exquisite surroundings. After eighteen years, the interiors still look pristine. How have they not become dated? “Tintswalo Safari Lodge is decorated in our signature style,” Lisa explains. “It’s all about the comfort of our guests and we do like to combine African designs with a touch of glamor,

which includes luxurious fabrics, Persian rugs and crystal chandeliers. It is a traditionally styled safari lodge and therefore a more ‘classic’ design, which does not date easily, but we do update the soft furnishings and objet d’art from time to time to keep the design fresh.” *** Views expressed are the author’s own. Thank you to Janie van der Spuy from Fivestar PR for arranging our stay and to the Tintswalo Safari team for their kind hospitality.

Describing itself as Europe´s first music hotel, nhow Berlin has retina blasting design and a dramatic location in the east of the German capital overlooking the River Spree.
n
how Berlin in the city´s eastern Friedrichshain district , an area once decidedly edgy but now media savvy, is not hard to spot. Its container and crane like design, from architect Sergei Tchoban, references the area nautical and industrial past. Inside things get decidedly surreal. New York-based designer Karim Rashid created a pop art palette of neon colours and design curves. Everything is seriously bright and intense with a lobby that resembles an 80s art installation on steroids with purple and pink sculptures that resemble prehistoric landscapes. The hotel´s location provides easy access to Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg and the local S Bahn, a mere eight minutes walk on a cold day, will whizz you into central Berlin in under 15 minutes. The Universal Music headquarter s are next door. nhow Berlin features a large restaurant and bar area with a big terrace that sits over the Spree. Popular with local professionals it is often used for conferences and media launches and junkets. The hotel has a conference centre, art gallery, gym, sauna and recording studios. Guests can hire out Gibson guitars, Marshall amplifiers, keyboards and even a DJ booth. Rooms vary in size from deluxe suites to standard rooms. Ours was small and decked out in bright pinks and chrome greys. Unsurprisingly there are pink phones, pink sheets and pink upholstery. A well stocked mini bar and Nespresso machines come as standard and the room boasts a television that can be turned 180 degrees and underfloor heating. The glass walled bathroom comes with rain showers and La Bottega tolietries.
The restaurant Fabrics dishes up modern German-French cuisine in a dramatic lizard green and blushing pink interior. The menu includes starters such as Cucumber Soup and mains of Viennese Veal escalope. A bar menu, available all day at the Envy Bar, serves up classics such as local wurst or ribs, tasty washed down with a good pilsener. A highlight of the hotel is the terrace, a reason why the hotel is popular with events - T he weekend we stayed there was a wedding. The Envy bar, designed like a turntable, specialises in cocktails and has a large selection of whiskey and gin. From Thursday to Saturday , the Envy Bar has DJs in the evenings. Breakfast is an expansive continental affair of hot and cold meats and German mueslis, locally baked bread and fruit. nhow Berlin has 10 accessible rooms for guests with disabilities. There are special toilets, beds, bathrooms and elevators. For those travelling with children, the larger superior rooms and suites can be provided with cots and high chairs. nhow Berlin, Stralauer Allee 3, Berlin, 10245, Germany | Tel: +49 030 2902990 www. nh-hotels.com Standard rooms from EUR 80

KHERETE IRAQLIO Welcome to Heraklion | BY REBECCA UNDERWOOD Photos courtesy of the Greek National Tourism Organisation and photographer Y. Skoulas.
Heraklion, the vibrant capital of the Grecian island of Crete, entices visitors with its colourful tapestry of history, rich and diverse culture and the splendour of its natural surroundings with tranquil, secluded beaches including Dytikos. A number of fascinating archaeological sites, popular with intrepid explorers, and a Mediterranean climate, ensure that this city is sure to remain a major tourism destination as it has been for the last forty years.
H
eraklion’s history dates back to the Neolithic period and a number of archaeological sites reflect its ties with Minoans, Byzantines and Venetians. Invaded in 824 AD by the Saracens the island was overrun with marauding pirates. Following a long blockade in 961 the Byzantines banished the Arabs and the town was renamed Handakas. Sold to the Venetians in 1204 and renamed Candia, the town prospered and a number of fortresses and churches were erected. In 1645, when the Ottomans invaded, countless inhabitants deserted the island and again in 1898 hundreds of locals were slain along with the British Consul and 17 British soldiers. Ottoman rule swiftly ended when British ships sailed into the harbour. The town was named Iraklio in 1922 and recognised as the capital in 1971. To learn more I headed for the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which occupies the site of a Venetian Franciscan monastery obliterated in 1856 by an earthquake. Located in the town centre, the museum features 27 rooms crammed with artefacts covering a period of more than five thousand years. The Minoan collection is spectacular and includes magnificent frescoes and sculptures. I spent an inordinate amount of time admiring the exquisitely carved snake goddesses, the golden bee pendant and the stone bull’s head, which was used for libations signified by the filling hole located in the neck and a matching outlet in the snout. Another highlight of the extensive collection is of course the Linear B tablets from Knossos.
Knossos was once the capital of Minoan Crete and the ancient Palace of Knossos is Heraklion’s most popular attraction. In the early 1900’s Sir Arthur Evans, the British archaeologist, uncovered and restored the prehistoric ruins. The ancient palace, the origin of the legend of the labyrinth, dates back to 2000 BC and was the home of King Minos and the mythical Minotaur and it is absolutely mesmerising. To view another archaeological gem I headed for the picturesque town of Rethymno, which is an hour’s drive away, and features a magnificent Venetian fortress. The enchanting Venetian-Ottoman quarter includes a warren of narrow streets with charming houses adorned with wooden balconies, Venetian monuments and ornate minarets. In 1646 the town fell to the Ottomans and remained under their rule for almost three hundred years. I took a glimpse into the Ottoman Empire’s past with a leisurely stroll along Vernardos Street, and as the Neratze mosque came into my view the three towering domes on the roof and the high minaret demanded my undivided admiration. For those of us seeking the ultimate luxurious resort, after an arduous day of explorations, the Lux Me Grecotel White Palace, located near Rethymno, offers the highest levels of comfort and service. The property sits alongside a beautiful sandy beach and features a wide choice of sumptuously furnished accommodations including the open plan ‘Luxe Yali’ seafront villa with a private, heated pool and access to the

TRAVEL beach. Dining options include Asian, Italian and Oriental and the Greek Taverna, which features an a la carte menu, offers spectacular ocean views. Guests are also free to create and customise their own dining experience in a location of choice. For pre or post dining tipples there are six bars to choose from. For those keen to explore more, the Arkadi Monastery, located 25 kilometres from Rethymno, on the foothills of Mount Psiloritis, is another site that draws the crowds. Vineyards, forests and olive groves thrive in this fertile region and there surrounded by hills, the Arkadi Monastery was built, according to tradition, during the rule of the Byzantine emperor Heraclius or, it is also said, during the rule of emperor Arcadius in the 5thcentury; the exact date is unknown. In 1866, during Ottoman oppression the monastery served to protect hundreds of Cretan resistance fighters and their families. Less than two hundred local men fought for two days to resist the might of 6000 Turks. Today the monastery houses a small number of monks and nuns and the church and surrounding buildings are well maintained. Another nearby attraction is Fortezza, the Venetian fort built in 1573 A.D. I strolled through the central entrance, along a dark arcade into the sunlit interior and then through the building that once housed the artillery. I then wandered around the small amphitheatre and the Sultan Ibrahim temple and mosque, and then into the 19th century Church of Aghia Ekaterini, continuing along the narrow pathway and at the eastern end there is a small Russian church; evidence of the presence of Russian troops during 1897 to 1909. Adventure seeks with energy to burn should take a trip to Crete’s national forest, the Samaria Gorge, which is the longest in Europe. Wander through the 11 mile gorge at leisure; starting at the Omalos plateau and crossing the White Mountains. A little piece of heaven awaits; an abundance of trees, the aroma of sweet flowers and herbs and the only sounds that interrupt the silence is the water flowing gently from the little fountains, birds of prey announcing their presence and the crunching of the pebbles underfoot. On arrival at the quaint village of Aghia Roumeli passengers can board a boat to Chora Sfakion and then travel by road to Heraklion. And for those with an interest in cave exploration, head for the cliffs at Matala bay and discover the artificial caves dating back to the Neolithic Age. Used as tombs in the first and second centuries, one of the caves, known as Brutospeliana was, according to legend, visited by Brutus, the Roman general. I prefer to spend some time relaxing in the sunshine and I as have a penchant for an afternoon snooze, the soft sandy beach and the gentle waves of the warm Mediterranean Sea lapping the shore of Matala bay, provided the ideal spot. As I reclined on my comfortable lounger the words of Nikos Kazantzakis, who was born in Heraklion in 1883 and wrote Zorba the Greek, came to my mind….. ‘Life on earth means the sprouting of wings’. 76 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | FEBRUARY 2020
