NATE BERKUS N Every home tells a story | By Heléne Ramackers
ate Berkus lives by the maxim that your home should tell your story, with what you love most collected and assembled in one place. Revolutionizing countless homes throughout the world, he knows how to create the most stylish interiors imaginable.
Nate spoke to Upscale Living magazine about his love for his work, and husband Jeremiah Brent and their daughter Poppy. Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path? My mother was an interior designer who had a big influence on me while I was growing up. When and why did you decide to become an interior designer? My first job out of college was at an auction house in Chicago. I learnt so much about antiques, vintage, etc. From there it was a natural segue into designing interiors. You started your design firm at the age of 24 and more than two decades later, you are still going strong. What and who inspires you? I have been so lucky to have been doing this for as long as I have. Travel inspires me, as does
architecture, art, fashion, and jewelry. My husband Jeremiah Brent is a big inspiration.
And the worst? Nothing.
What are / have been your biggest challenges in your career? I have been incredibly fortunate to be in this business for a lengthy period of time. There have been mistakes along the way for sure. The trick is to learn from them and do better next time.
Tell us about your own decorating style and the favorite room(s) in your home? I have always believed your home should tell your story, and the way you do that is through your things. Reach for things that feel timeless, and that have meaning. If you don’t absolutely love it, it shouldn’t be in your home.
Important lessons along the way? When someone tells you who they are, believe them. That’s a great Maya Angelou quote. The favorite part of your job? Helping people live beautifully in their homes.
What key pieces in your home can you not live without? I am a decorator and everything in my home is meaningful, but at the end of the day I’ve always believed people first, then pets, then things.
What is the best thing about being an interior designer? Is like I mentioned in your previous question, helping people live beautifully in their homes.
How do you solve / negotiate difference in taste between yourself and your husband, Jeremiah Brent? (See question below).

Talk us through a timeless interior design style. If it’s been around since the 1930’s chances are it’s not going anywhere, whether materials, finishes, or vintage pieces. I don’t believe in trends - they are designed to make people feel bad about what they didn’t buy. How important is it to accessorize? Very. That last layer is what brings a room together – whether rugs, art, woven pieces, wall hangings, throws, framed photos, etc. Is there a right and wrong when it comes to decorating? Please explain. There are for sure rules of scale and how things work together in a room. But, if you love something you can find a way to live with it. How does one keep things modern without having to break the bank? There are so many great affordable options these days, from Target to Chairish, Etsy, etc. Do you believe in repurposing dated pieces or should one just shop for new ones? My firm and I incorporate vintage into every single interior we design. The more chipped and marked, the better. That patina and history is ultimately what makes a room feel interesting. Poppy, your daughter was born in 2015. She is simply gorgeous! How has life changed for you since becoming a father? Well, I now live with a lot of plastic, colorful things which I never thought would happen. Be-

coming a parent changes everything. She is teaching us every single day.
end, as well – that’s how you know you’re in the right profession.
Any anecdotal stories of Poppy you would like to share? During the festive season last year, it was all about Santa and Christmas. We could get her to do anything by telling her if she doesn’t, Santa won’t be visiting. Wish we could have that kind of leverage all year long.
If you hadn’t become an interior designer, what would you have become? A jewelry designer.
You and Jeremiah had another ‘baby’ in 2017 – a television show ‘Nate and Jeremiah by Design’. What is it like working with your spouse? Jeremiah and I will argue about who gets the last piece of pizza, but when it comes to design we are very much in lock step. We challenge each other in the right way. Jeremiah has an incredible eye …I love that we get to do this together. I believe a second season is on the cards? Yes, we are currently in production. The new season will air in spring 2018. Describe yourself in three words. Double Virgo! That’s all you need to know. You travel for business, and hopefully pleasure too. Which have been your favorite places to travel to that have left a lasting impression? Mexico is one of my favorite places to visit, and my husband and I got engaged in Peru. What do you do for fun? Design and antiquing is what I do on the week-
JANUARY 2018 www.upscalelivingmag.com
Tell us what you are working on right now? We are in the middle of production for Season 2 of “Nate and Jeremiah By Design”, a show I am doing with my husband, Jeremiah [on TLC]. I recently partnered with Framebridge as Creative Advisor, which is a really fun collaboration. I’m currently working on new collections for Target and The Shade Store for 2018. Not to mention, my design firm and the interior projects we are working on. It was a very busy end to 2017. Your plans for 2018 – personal and professional? There’s a lot in the works, it’s going to be a big year. www.nateberkus.com

GWENDOLYN OSBORNE-SMITH Striking A Balance
T
| By Heléne Ramackers
he former ‘The Price Is Right’ presenter is transitioning into a new career, working alongside her husband on their family-owned Smith Entertainment Group. Gwendolyn Osborne-Smith reveals her interesting past and her exciting future prospects.
Tell us a bit about yourself. I feel that I am at a great place in life. I am experiencing a career transition from leaving ‘The Price Is Right’ after twelve years and I’m excited about all the possibilities for my new career trajectory. Your mother is Jamaican and your father is British. That sounds like the best of both worlds. What are your fondest childhood memories? Food! I love the fact that I get so much great food from different cultures. It was also great to travel to different countries at a young age. It helped me to discover cultures in such an intimate way and enabled me to adapt to various different cultural environments. I definitely have the Jamaican love for dance. I learned to whine (pronounced wind - like winding a clock) my waist at a young age (and have gotten pretty good at it over the years!). I enjoyed going to the South of England to the British seaside with my grandparents for fresh fish and chips. My childhood was quite a unique fusion.
You are a model. When did you model and talk us through the interesting and fascinating places you were able to visit? I like to reminisce about traveling to the Caribbean islands while living in Miami. I still have a love for the islands and traveling to discover new ones. The world sees modeling as one aspect but it was interesting to work in various areas of print, commercial, and runway. One of my most memorable experiences was when I got inspired by the success of Halle Berry (who doesn’t love Boomerang?!) and decided to chop off my long hair. It was a huge risk and my agent wasn’t happy about my hair chop, but it paid off! I booked a huge print ad for Saturn almost immediately afterwards and I’m a car enthusiast as well so I enjoyed the job.
How did you end up on ‘The Price is Right’? I was working as an actor on the Bold and the Beautiful for a beach scene. My wardrobe was a small bikini! The B&B stage is so close to TPIR that they share a bathroom. A TPIR grip saw me and went back to TPIR and told a producer, Kathy Greco about me and the rest is history… Having spent twelve years on the show, it must be part of who you are. What was that experience like?
Modeling is similar to acting in that you often create a “character” for the job. I was able to infuse my love of dance and sketch comedy fun for show tapings. When I first started I was a single mum and working on TPIR was a great way to get my foot in the door in the Any anecdotal / horror stories about modeling? entertainment world. Plus it provided flexible hours to also spend time with my eldest daughter I once did a runway show for a huge designer in the early years. and one of the other models stole my shoes just before I hit the stage. I was frantic and really Share with us the most exciting part(s) of annoyed but I carried on and realized that I the show and were there ever disappointing could walk/werk pretty well in heels two sizes moments? too small. 23 Upscale Living Magazine |
JANUARY 2018 www.upscalelivingmag.com
P R O F I L E The beginning of every show is the most exciting part. It reminds me of being in a play and the moments before going on the big stage … the hair, make-up, audience, fanfare. Many times before a taping, I’d look on the backstage monitors to see the audience. Their excitement and costumes/custom t-shirts always energized me before hitting the stage. TPIR has the greatest audience and nothing compares to taping a show in front of a live audience or cheering fans. It must have been emotionally challenging to say goodbye … did you have mixed feelings about letting go? I didn’t have mixed feelings; I was prepared to move forward with my career to the next chapter. However, for the taping of my last show, I got very emotional hearing Drew Carey say on the microphone that it was my last show. Having to say goodbye to the audience, which was also filled with my support system of friends and family on that day was emotional. I definitely wasn’t prepared for that. Working on a show for twelve years created a family environment. During that time period I experienced many life milestones: I got married, had two more children, lots of birthdays, etc. … Now for exciting times ahead – you and your husband have started your own business – Smith Entertainment Group. What is the focus of your company and what is your involvement? The focus of SEG is to create new and exciting content, including sports and lifestyle to showcase the talents of others and of ours as well. We do scripted and unscripted shows. My involvement is to oversee that all of the projects are moving in the right direction with the right people. I also make sure that as SEG grows we maintain our original vision and adapt as needed. I’m involved in each aspect of production from creativity to closing deals. There is a saying one should never work with your spouse, family or friends … is this true? It can be challenging at times. We respect our creative differences and thought processes. At the end of the day we have the same goal: to create fun and innovative content.
We fit what we can in whenever we can. Sometimes a date night can include going to a live taping of our daughter in a sitcom or going to a UNC college basketball game our son is playing in or watching our eldest perform onstage while on tour! It’s all very exciting!! What do you as a family do for fun? We love to take vacations and discover new fun places. We are active and like to ride bikes, snorkel, and spend time around water. We recently took a trip to Hawaii. The kids loved the music and excitement of seeing a luau. Education through travel is fun. And as a couple? I am a foodie so I love trying new places. It seems in LA there’s always a fun trendy restaurant opening or a great new chef so it’s fun to experiment with different foods. I am definitely the more daring one in the relationship and will coerce Kenny into something like zip-lining for fun. You have the most incredible smile! You should be in toothpaste ads! Seriously, how do you maintain your gorgeous looks and stunning physique? Well thanks! If you have any connections, I’d love to do toothpaste ads! Lol. Oral hygiene has always been part of my lifestyle. I keep my regular dentist appointments, floss regularly, and never miss a dental check up. *BIG SMILE* Having the pressure of my smile helping me get a paycheck has always helped too! As for overall physique, I always try to fit some sort of exercise in three times a week. Even if it means walking with one of my kids in the neighborhood. Pilates on a reformer machine is my favorite workout and I can feel and see immediate results. Do you like to re-invent yourself looks-wise? I see you switch between brunette and blonde. A change is as good as a holiday they say? I always love to switch it up! It’s easy to switch up hair and sometimes it’s fun to make a change or two. A small change can help empower and uplift me. Is it true that blondes have more fun?
Is it hard to shut the door and not take your work home?
In certain circumstances, for sure. But overall I pretty much manage to have fun if my hair is blonde, brunette, or blue.
Giving space, maintaining patience, and respecting each other’s process definitely helps to maintain balance.
You are also a singer. What genre is your forte and who are / were your musical influences?
How do you balance your career and spend quality time as a couple and with your children? Do you believe in date nights?
24 Upscale Living Magazine |
I love neo-soul. My influences range from Mariah Carey’s early days to U2 to Etta James. How is the recording process of your album coming along?
JANUARY 2018 www.upscalelivingmag.com
It’s a process. I am trying to bind all of the chapters together to make one book. Each song represents a different experience or time in my life so I’m working to mesh them into a complete story. Are your children musically gifted? They are. My 5-year old daughter London never stops singing and dancing around the house. It reminds me a lot of myself as a child. If you had a crystal ball, what do you see in your future? Jokes aside, what would you still like to tackle in your personal life and career in the next couple of years? I would love to see myself working as an actress incorporating my singing on a show that I coproduce within five years. Parting thoughts? I am totally in love with the fact that Meghan Markle will be part of the Royal Family. Growing up as a mixed race girl in England it’s not something I ever thought I would see. With her also being an actress I feel she is someone I can relate to. Their union feels inspiring to the future of our world which is uplifting and much needed right now. I’ll be waiting for my Royal Wedding invitation! | Photographs by Vince Trupsin

Green With Envy Precious New Heights
As high jewelry met luxury fashion, what emerged was a foot fatale. Maison Bulgari and shoe couturier Manolo Blahnik recently dreamed up a mind-blowing pair of striking, green silk-satin pumps with a lavish sprinkling of precious gems. Embellished with diamonds, rubellites and amethysts, the ankle strap’s precious trimmings were inspired by Bulgari’s Festa high jewelry collection, launched earlier this year. With its pink-hued gems resembling pepperoncini, Italian extravagance sparkles on Blahnik’s unique shoes. “To co-design these unique pieces together with legend Manolo Blahnik was the realization of a personal dream, I am just addicted to his shoes!” confesses Lucia Silvestri, Creative Director-Jewelry, Bulgari. “Colors, creativity, daring femininity, unexpected materials, excellent craftsmanship, attention to details…Manolo Blahnik and Bulgari have a perfectly shared view in matters of luxury creations.” While designing the bejeweled shoes, Lucia had the perfect counterpart in front of her. “The green silk satin reminded me of the colors of peridots and I just needed to find the right gemstone combination,” she explains. “It has been an honor to work with such an iconic brand with a wonderful Italian heritage. We both share the same vision and creativity to produce beautiful things for beautiful women. I adored the accessory which was used, totally divine and perfectly complimented the zesty green satin!” adds Blahnik. This shoe was co-designed in celebration of The Art of Shoes exhibition, organized by Vogue Spain, as a tribute to the Spanish footwear designer. | BY SMITHA SADANANDAN

MICHAEL CANALE Hollywood’s Most Sought-After Hair Colorist | By Ava Roxanne-Stritt
W
ho would not want to have hair like Jennifer Aniston - or have the world desire to want your personal style and look? I admit I would! Well, Hollywood’s most sought-after hair colorist and stylist is now ready to spill all his secrets and share how he made those fabulous locks look so grand. First let me tell you more about the man, Michael Canalé. He is not only the co-creator of “The Rachel”, but also currently Hollywood’s most soughtafter colorist. His talent is also behind the famous hair of Heidi Klum, Shakira, Penelope Cruz and Carolyn Murphy. By pushing the standard in the hair industry, he is making quite a name for himself. After all the acclaim for being Jennifer Aniston’s long-time colorist and cocreator of “The Rachel”, his expertise is now being spread upon those of us that are not-so-famous - except on our own Instagram account. All of us need better care for our hair. I, myself recently re-
alized that the better care we take of our hair - the easier it is to style and like what we see in the mirror! Canalé’s innovative technique and keen eye are more reasons that the Hollywood industry keeps calling his name. One reason he is so highly regarded for his corrective color method is because of his focus on the natural beauty of hair. To keep the natural beauty one must make sure to protect the hair to prevent damage. When he helps his clients to maintain natural beauty, it creates healthy drop-dead gorgeous hair. With over 30 years in the industry his talent has flourished enough to get him voted “Best-of-theBest” by Allure Magazine 14 years in a row! If that wasn’t enough, Michael Canalé has created Canalé to share with you. His products are gentle but effective. Each product is hypoallergenic. They that work together creating a core system to cleanse, condition, nourish and thicken the hair. Also included in the product line
is a dry “touch up” shampoo. This type of product helps extend time between water washes - creating a virtuous and victorious circle of less frequent and gentle washing that extends color life and improves condition, starting at the follicular level. “For nearly 30 years it has been my mission to bring out your best color. All Canalé hair products are purpose designed to help you maintain the integrity and health of your hair both before and after visits to the salon. Giving you the confidence to reach for your very best in everything you choose to do. Stay Beautiful!”, Michael Canalé

Jockey Florent Geroux and Gun Runner cross the finish line to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic (November 4) in Del Mar, CA. Longines is the Official Watch and Timekeeper of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships and the Triple Crown.
Longines’ Love For Equestrian Sports | By Smitha Sadanandan

witzerland-based Longines might be best known for its elegant and refinedtimepieces, but the watchmaker has had an increasingly active presence on the turf. Official Partner, Timekeeper and Watch of the Breeders' Cup World Championships at Del Mar (CA), Longines timed Gun Runner’s exciting victory in the Breeders’ Cup Classic on November 4 at Del Mar racetrack. The brand also acted as Title Partner of the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff race on November 3 and the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf race on November 4 at the California racetrack.
elegant man and woman. The winners, who received a Longines watch, were chosen for their timeless style and of course, elegance. The 2017 races at Del Mar marked the 34th edition of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. A stellar thoroughbred horseracing annual event, the Breeders’ Cup attracts the best horses, breeders, trainers and owners from around the world. Additionally, the Breeders’ Cup Classic race is often one of the deciding factors in the Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings and the Longines World’s Best Jockey Award.
The ‘official watch’ of the event was the Longines Master Collection. Juan-Carlos Capelli, Vice President and Head of International Marketing for Longines, presented the elegant timepieces to the owner, breeder, trainer and jockey of winning horses of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, the Breeders’ Cup Distaff race and the Breeders’ Cup Turf race.
Notes from the past The watchmaker’s passion for equestrian sport dates back to 1878, when it produced a chronograph pocket watch engraved with a jockey and his mount. This model quickly became extremely popular among jockeys and horse-lovers thanks to its ability to precisely time events to the second. Seen on the racetracks as early as 1881, this Longines chronograph pocket watch also became the timer of choice for most New York sport judges.
In keeping with the brand’s motto that ‘Elegance is an Attitude’, Longines awarded the Longines Prize for Elegance to the most

Time for Elegance In 2005, Swiss watch brand Longines launched its Master Collection that soon become a best-seller. Over the years, the brand added new sizes and sophistications to the collection. This year, riding on the success wave, Longines has launched two editions: one in gray and the other in blue. These fashionable chromatic variations embody the classic and understated spirit of the Longines Master Collection. The sunray blue or sunray gray dial depicts the hours, minutes and seconds with rhodium-plated hands that stand out subtly. The gray models, as well as the men’s blue model, are available with an alligator strap of the same colour as the dial. The timepieces for men and women come in several diameters to suit the wrist.

CHAD
TURNER Wisdom Brings Success
Chad Turner
| By Heléne Ramackers
With his motto of ‘I am here to learn’, Chad Turner has had some disappointments and failures on his path to success. The mastermind behind the aesthetically pleasing yoga mats crafted by his company, Yoga Design Lab, he has carved a niche in the market that will go a long way in sustaining a profitable business. Tell us a bit about yourself. Tell us a bit about yourself. I am 36 years old Canadian born in Toronto. I have been living in Bali a good chunk of the year for the last four years and traveling the rest. A solid amount of my time has been spent in Cape Town, South Africa, where I enjoyed spending a month in November in the picturesque town of Muizenberg to recharge my batteries. Then it was back to freezing Canada where I treasured being with my family over Christmas and New Year. It’s quite an adaptation for me to acclimatize to the shift in seasons, but I enjoy the weather wherever I am. I have been nomadic since I was 19 when I first left home to play semi-professional ice hockey in Berlin for a season before retiring to start my first business back in Toronto. The hockey team went bankrupt after four months and I knew then my path wasn’t hockey.
Since I was little, my dream was to travel the world and create design based businesses. It’s been an adventure the last 17 years. I have traveled to 60 plus countries. I have had numerous businesses that failed and a couple that worked. I have learnt a great deal through my failures and will continue this learning curve, taking a lot from my experiences. When did you start your business, Yoga Design Lab? I started in May 2014. How successful has it been? I have been super fortunate that the response was encouraging from the very beginning with some major media coverage. We have grown to over 40 countries and in excess of 300 retailers carrying the brand. To what do you attribute your success? Past failures that were the perfect learning lessons, pushing myself to improve when things looked their worst, and continually visualizing what I wanted to create. Talk us through the design and production process of the yoga mats? Inspired by all forms of beauty, don’t bother to follow trend reports, or look at competition too much. My goal is really just to create something that is stand-alone impressive, eco conscious, and premium quality. What is your involvement? I am involved in the design, marketing, and overseeing every facet of the business with a very strong team of other digital nomads that I’ve been lucky to have come into the brand.
And the Insulated Stainless Steel Water Bottles? I also have an inner loose leaf tea/fruit infuser that I always use for morning Ayurvedic teas. Do you have any new ideas / products that could take the market by storm? Ha, working on it. I currently have seven to eight new products in development, which can take ages to perfect as the development process is lengthy and expensive. You live in Bali. That must be tough. What is a typical day like for you? Living in Bali has provided such an incredible backdrop to live and work, surrounded by locals and a diverse international community of digital nomads, entrepreneurs, yogis, healers, and travelers all drawn by the undeniable magnetism of this island. Work life here is relatively unparalleled in my opinion. You’re able to plug in and get a ton accomplished, and then when you’re finished just close your laptop and you’re in Bali. Do you travel extensively and which place would you rate, apart from Bali, your favorite destination and why? Yeah, I have been more or less nomadic for the last seventeen years and it only sped up when I really started being able to work digitally in 2008. My favorite ’cities’ are Cape Town, Buenos Aires and New York. Then for off the grid, connected with nature filled environments - which is where I gravitate much more these days are Cabo Polonio Uruguay, Lombok Indonesia, and Alentejo Portugal. Any travel horror stories? My interpretation of a full passport apparently

differed from a customs official last year and I was denied boarding a flight from Bali to Cape Town. It took almost a month to replace the passport and the circus of other things that went astray that month, including a daily penalty of $30 per day for overstaying my visa because I was originally flying on my last visa day. Coming back to yoga, what sparked your interest in yoga? I have always been drawn to the pursuit of mastering my mind. Studying personal development, Buddhist philosophy, mediation, shamanic arts, etc. Back in 2007, a good friend mentioned the Patanjali Yoga Sutras and recommended a read. His words were ‘it contains everything’. At that time, I was occasionally practicing Bikram/hot yoga and mostly attributed yoga as a trendy/purely physical exercise. The yoga sutras explained the full eight limb path of yoga, where the physical postures (asanas) where only one limb (or step) on a sequential path to yoga union (mind/body/spiritual mastery). I started to understand the simplicity and power of the ancient system of yoga and how it taught the fundamental steps to living a beautiful life. You master your mind; then the magic really starts to happen. Still working on it ….
What type of yoga do you practice? I practice eight limb yoga. What is your motto in life? I am here to learn. Future plans? My goal has always been to stop ‘working for money’ by 35 and instead work for impact. I’m a little behind on that goal but it’s still the target. I’d rather be thinking about how I can improve someone’s life, rather than how much money I can extract from them. My next project will be based around cleansing the body/mind to remove blocks holding us back from flourishing. I’m starting with myself. www.yogadesignlab.com

A Turn for Wellness THE TURNBERRY ISLE MIAMI | By Yvonne Yorke
T
he Turnberry Isle Miami resort, with its country club pedigree, is just 25 minutes from South Beach, and epitomizes refined luxury amidst a sea of flashier counterparts. Situated on 300-acres of verdant tropical gardens in Aventura just off Golden Beach, it features two 18-hole PGA championship golf courses, the only lagoonstyle pool of its kind in South Florida, private poolside cabanas, and a world-class marina yacht club on the Intracoastal Waterway. No wonder it is regularly featured in the “World’s Best Resorts” lists. I had the pleasure spending a day of indulgence at Turnberry Isle’s Âme Spa & Wellness Collective. Meaning “soul” in French, Âme is a 25,000 sq. ft, state-of-the-art facility offering cutting-edge European spa technology and unique treatments curated by the Gharieni Group in Germany. Along with spa stalwarts such as massages and facials, there are also fitness classes, a full service salon, and a cosmetic medical practice. Natural light streams in from 40 ft. floor-toceiling windows in the spa atrium, and a striking Nautilus shell-shaped spiral staircase connects the spa’s three floors. To maximize the effects of their spa treatments, guests are suggested to first prepare their bodies by undergoing a rotation through Âme’s signature “Wellness Circuit”. I started off in the enveloping warmth of the eucalyptus steam room before heading to the Aroma, Chroma and Music Therapy Steam room which features color and sound therapies. With alternating pink, green and blue lights, this shower experience utilizes various jet streams to simulate a tropical rain forest complete with sounds of rolling thunder and warm jet sprays before being transporting you to the tundra
with sprays of refreshing cold mists of water. I emerge blissfully energized before entering the Himalayan Salt room. The heated walls of this room are comprised of blocks of Himalayan crystal salt - a pure natural product formed over 200 million years ago and rich in beneficial trace minerals and elements. Studies have shown that heated Himalayan salt crystals have therapeutic benefits by emitting naturallyoccurring negative ions. These offset the positive ions caused by the electric magnetic frequencies emitted from our computers and cell phones. Cumulative exposure to EMFs are said to cause fatigue and stress. Breathing in the salt air is said to purify the lungs and skin and I lounged for 20 minutes in the warm orange glow of the Salt Room before heading over to the Swiss Shower. Stemming from European hydrotherapy traditions, multiple jets of water with different pressures aimed at multiple body zones got my circulation flowing and eased the tension from my muscles. Deciding on which of the unique spa treatments to choose was no easy task. Should I go for the Tibetan Singing Bowls sound therapy, the Ayurvedic herbal detoxification, or perhaps the ultra-luxurious Diamond Rose Ritual with Damask rose oil and diamond dust to polish the body? As an avid spa-aficionado, I typically seek out the most unusual and innovative treatments on offer. The popular Alisselle Amethyst Himalayan Massage by Gharieni fits the bill featuring a massage bed that resembles a sand box, but in this case, filled with a mixture of fine quartz sand and high-quality Baltic amber beads. I’m told that the ancient Egyptians enjoyed lying in
the hot desert sand and the resulting warmth provided physical and mental relaxation as well as having a purifying effect. I gingerly lay down on the cotton sheet covering the warm sand bed and was amazed by how comfortable it is. I’m told that the quartzsand mix produces negative ionized air which boosts your immune system, energizes the body and reduces overall stress. I felt all my tension literally melt away as my masseuse expertly knead my muscles with crystal-filled muslin bags and aromatherapy oils. For those looking for long-term health and wellness solutions, the Âme spa features an extensive program with board-certified, medical practitioners of Eastern and Western disciplines. Along with nutritional consultations, their Center of Integrative Medicine and Holistic Rejuvenations offers homeopathic and supplement prescriptions, as well as personalized lifestyle coaching. With so a comprehensive program developed towards well-being, it’s easy to see why the Âme, philosophy is “Wellness is the ultimate luxury”. ......................................................................... 19999 West Country Club Drive, Aventura, Florida 33180 TEL855-201-8027 AMEWELLNESS.COM .........................................................................

B
egin in the quiet town of Port Ludlow, the perfect place for a respite from the everyday world. Less than a two-hour drive from the bustling city of Seattle, this elegant town is situated on a marine inlet in Jefferson County. THE RESORT AT PORT LUDLOW The Resort at Port Ludlow incorporates a variety of entities. Settle into one of the 37 rooms at the inn featuring breathtaking views of either the waterfront or the marina. Lounge in a jetted tub with soaps, lotion bars, and bath salts created to protect the environment from Sweetlife Farm or relax by the fireplace that comes standard in each room. Impeccable service begins at the resort with a quick and easy check-in. Staff in the kitchen work to make dining in the elegant fireside restaurant a carefree and delectable experience. Sit outside on the deck and watch the boats come and go from the marina while sipping on a delicious cocktail made to order by the resort bartender. Get outside and play a round or two at the 18-hole championship golf course or rent a kayak at the marina and explore the nearby waterways. Walk on the marina side of the inn and ferret out heritage secrets hidden within the local totem pole or traverse nearby trails to enjoy the tranquility of the area. FARM-TO-TABLE DINING AT THE ALDER WOOD BISTRO For delicious farm-to-table dining take a scenic 40-minute drive to Sequim, and relish dinner at the Alder Wood Bistro. Owners Gabriel and Jessica Schuenemann practice their values as “Do-Gooders while simultaneously living out their personal passions. Over the past 11 years, the couple has sourced over one million dollars in fresh organic produce from local purveyors thereby keeping funds in the local community. Chef Gabriel creates scrumptious dishes for customers, and Jessica runs the restaurant responsibly for both the community and the earth. Striving to protect the environment, the Schuenemanns keep a closed loop on recycling by using only one 96-gallon garbage can per week and seven 20-gal-

lon compost buckets. By regularly delivering compost to a neighboring farm they replenish the earth with nutrients to sustain the healthy growth cycle. The menu at Alder Wood Bistro changes regularly, and Chef Gabriel takes full advantage of what the area has to offer each season. Chanterelle and porcini mushrooms proved to be exciting finds this fall. Chef personally foraged in the local woods and mixed the mushrooms with cream, tarragon, leeks, and smoked paprika for his Market Tartine. The mushrooms made additional appearances in soups and on pizzas. Chef believes that food should be pleasing to the eye and tantalizing to the taste buds. The Fried Calamari Salad with mixed greens, Mama Lil’s pickled peppers, and kaffir-lime vinaigrette is a perfect example of gorgeous food with appealing flavors. LAVISH GARDENS AND DINING DELIGHTS AT NOURISH Another great farm-to-table dining establishment is Nourish. The restaurant sits unpretentiously on a hill surrounded by a lavish garden. Owners Dave and Tanya Rose offer delicious nourishing food cooked in what they believe is the healthiest way possible. Conscientious diners can take comfort in knowing that fryers and microwaves cannot be found on this property. Local watercolorist and botanical illustrator Iris Edey maintains the organic garden and hand paints signs found throughout the restaurant and the grounds. Savor the restaurant’s homemade muffins, or try out their Dungeness Crab Melt on the homemade Brazilian cheese bun. According to Dave, “It took several tries to develop the bread and get just the right texture.” In the autumn the seasonal pear crisp dessert arrives garnished with dainty flowers from the garden creating a flawless finish to a delicious meal. ASTOUND THE SENSES AT OLYMPIC LAVENDER COMPANY The 50-mile stretch has a plethora of enchanting sights and pleasant aromas to offer visitors. Marco and Christa Hermasillo at Olympic Lavender Company share how they fell in love with the lavender and the small-town feel of the community in Sequim. After purchasing the farm in 2013 they doubled their lavender acreage. Visitors from around the world visit this US version of Provence, France to experience its beautiful mountains, temperate weather, and wondrous ocean. The Hermasillos grow several varietals of lavender. According to Christa, “Lavender farming is a labor of love.” She said, “We grow angustifolia lavender for culinary purposes and its oils as well 46 Upscale Living Magazine |
as intermedia lavender, which is generally used for its oils and crafting purposes.” When visiting the certified organic farm, guests can learn about farming and harvesting, participate in defoliating the lavender, or even purchase products. Enjoy a stroll through the lavender fields, sit in one of the three gigantic purple Adirondack chairs, or visit the Hermasillos’ main store in town to purchase lavender products to take home. ACTIVITIES ALONG THE STRAIT OF JUAN DE FUCA Another fun stop for adults is Wind Rose Cellars. Owners David and Jennifer Volmut provide a place for locals and visitors to gaze upon local artistry, savor flavorsome appetizers, and enjoy David’s Italian-style wines made from Washington-grown grapes. This 50-mile stretch offers plenty of beaches to walk, so take off your shoes and feel the warm sand between your toes while listening to the crashing waves. Dungeness Spit is a great place to bring a blanket and savor a picnic lunch while relaxing on the beach. PORT ANGELES – GATEWAY TO OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK Complete the trip in Port Angeles, recognized as the gateway to Olympic National Park and the perfect home-base for day hikes, beach walks, and exploration to waterfalls. Visitors will find a plentiful number of restaurants in the area. Stop at H20 Waterfront Bistro and dine on amazing fish and chips or breakfast on enticing crab

Tourists and locals fortunate enough to be in Port Angeles during early October should indulge in the bounty of seafood available at the annual Dungeness Crab & Seafood Festival. For sixteen years this community has actively celebrated the Native American heritage, local artistry, and abundance of regional crab from the sea. This festival convenes each year alongside the Red Lion Inn adjacent to the ferry terminal connecting the US and Canada. International and domestic guests spend two days feasting on Dungeness crab and other seafood delicacies, listening and dancing to music performed by local musicians, shopping at artisan booths, and generally enjoying all that the Strait of Juan de Fuca has to offer. the helmut jahn-designed tower 1000 South Michigan, Chicago Real estate co-developers Time Equities (TEI), JK Equities (JKE) and Oak Capitals (Oak), announced the official launch of sales for 1000M, the ultra-luxury condominium development in Chicago. Located at 1000 South Michigan, along Chicago’s iconic Cultural Mile, the curving, cantilevering, 832-foot-tall glass tower will make a dramatic impact on Chicago’s world-famous skyline as one of its tallest towers. Drawing inspiration from the intersection of city and nature, Jahn’s design brilliantly optimizes views of Lake Michigan and surrounding vistas throughout the tower from homes to amenity spaces.1000M gradually widens at the northeast and southwest corners, allowing its floor plate to transition from an efficient rectangle at the base to an expansive parallelogram at the top, giving even the southwestern units prime views of Lake Michigan and Grant Park. Additionally, floorto-ceiling glass panels, large operable windows and high ceilings will flood homes with natural light. Homes at 1000M will range from efficient 926-square-foot, one-bedroom residences to ultra-luxurious, 5,491-square-foot penthouses. THE WESTIN PUSHKAR RESORT & SPA | By Jyoti Balani
H O T E L
Recently I visited the Westin Pushkar Resort & Spa on invitation and was pleasantly surprised to see a luxurious resort in an area which is known as the pilgrim destination of Rajasthan. The Westin Pushkar Resort & Spa marks the brand’s seventh property in India and Pushkar’s first internationallybranded hotel. Owned by Paradise Properties, the newly-built resort aims to bring the Westin brand’s innovative wellness initiatives to the renowned spiritual destination of Pushkar, Rajasthan, the popular desert state in India. Pushkar is 158 kms from the Jaipur International Airport, 53 kms from the Kishangarh Airport and is also connected by rail to Ajmer Junction. I had to travel from Pune to Jaipur and then a car was sent to drive me to the resort. After three and half hours, I finally reached the beautiful resort late evening and was welcomed by General Manager Amit Rana on arrival. A hassle free check in ensured I reached my luxury villa in a buggy (cart) and relaxed in my luxurious villa which had an in house plunge pool- a first in my various travel experiences so far.
I
ndia’s seventh Westin property, The Westin Pushkar Resort & Spa is surrounded by the picturesque Aravalli Hills and spread across a vast eleven acres. The property offers ninety eight contemporary guestrooms with more than half (forty four) featuring private pools. These rooms are divided into four categories namely luxury villas, royal villas, premier villas and deluxe rooms. In addition to the signature amenities, including the Westin Heavenly® Bed and the Westin Heavenly® Bath, the resort embraces Westin’s innovative programming designed to inspire balance and enhance well-being, leaving guests feeling better than when they arrived. The resort offers a choice of four unique dining venues: Seasonal Tastes, the signature all-day dining restau-

Apart from the natural beauty of the resort and vast expanses of greenery along with beautiful water bodies, The Westin Pushkar Resort & Spa also curates exciting experiences for guests such as the floating breakfast. For guests who are put up in a plunge pool, the resort organizes for the floating breakfast right inside the villa whereas for others, the fascinating floating breakfast is organized in the outdoor pool. Chef Maanveer Singh Chauhan had a chat with me about my breakfast preferences the previous day and created an amazing spread of chocolate doughnuts that dangled off a stand on the wooden tray; bottles of freshly squeezed juice, an omelet with toast, the local specialty mathris, mouth watering kachoris and assorted fruit, enough to keep one going the entire day. The tray is made of red cedarwood, created to hold 3 kilos of breakfast goodies without tipping over. My breakfast that morning was really delayed as I kept taking photos of the magical tray such was my fascination for the floating breakfast. The next morning, I visited the expansive Heavenly Spa for a relaxing massage. The Westin Pushkar Resort & Spa boasts a 10,000 squarefoot Heavenly Spa with seven therapy rooms offering a range of local and international treatments. Even though the hotel also arranges for a spa experience in the rooms, it is a good idea to visit the serene Heavenly Spa and gaze at the beautiful photograph of the Buddha or to spend time at the spacious terrace which will function as a venue for yoga sessions as I was informed by the resort. A sprawling, outdoor pool located at the center of the resort, and a state-of-the-art WestinWORKOUT® fitness studio ensure there is something for fitness enthusiasts. The Westin Family Kids’ Club features a 20-seat mini theater and a dedicated play area for children making the resort a perfect family getaway. 52 Upscale Living Magazine |
“The opening of The Westin Pushkar Resort & Spa brings the first internationally-branded resort to the city of Pushkar,” said Pankaj Prabhashankar Saboo, Managing Partner, Paradise Properties, a part of Paradise Group. “The newly-built resort will combine the spiritual essence of the Holy City along with the well-being philosophy and programs of the Westin brand, offering unparalleled experiences and facilities to our guests.” Apart from admiring my luxurious villa, I also spent time just sitting in the breezy and elegant lobby which is a great place to spend evenings while sipping on a glass of wine or a cocktail made by the efficient waiting staff at Mix. While at Mix it is a great idea to take up the bartender’s suggestion of mixing one of his cocktail recipes just for the delight of making your first cocktail ever. The staff at Mix use a lot of locally grown produce to create mind blowing cocktails served with some great finger foods which you can feast on while enjoying some great music at the lounge. Seasonal Tastes was always buzzing at mealtimes with guests helping themselves to superfoods created specially as part of the brand Westin and a huge array of European, Asian and Indian cuisine. Executive Chef Neeraj Kataria dished up local Rajasthani delicacies on the first day at lunch including laal maas, ker sangri, gate ki sabzi daal baati churma. Panorama with its spectacular views is a great place to sip on delicious cocktails or a glass of wine with some great

SANCTUARY RETREATS CHIEF’S CAMP
CHIEF’S ISLAND, MOREMI GAME RESERVE, BOTSWANA By Heléne Ramackers
In the heart of the Okavango Delta lies the pristine Sanctuary Retreats Chief ’s Camp. Situated on Chief ’s Island, homage is paid to Chief Moremi of the BaTawana tribe, who used to occupy the area as royal hunting reserve. Today, filled with an abundance of wilderness and most importantly, the ultimate in absolute sophistication and relaxation, Sanctuary Retreats Chief ’s Camp and the adjacent Moremi Game Reserve on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta is teeming with the most spectacular wildlife and is a game viewer’s nirvana.
T
he drive from the airstrip to camp is littered with babies – impalas, tsessebe’s and zebra; a sure sign that breeding season was successful to spring a profusion of new life. Annemie Parker, General Manager at Sanctuary Retreats Chief ’s Camp and a myriad of staff warmly welcome me to my home for the next two nights. After a brief orientation, Annemie shows me around my impressive room, Pavilion 2, named Sekgathole. Boasting some of the largest rooms in the area and after an extensive refurbishment in 2016, Chief ’s Camp is a sanctuary for the mind, body and soul. My pavilion is ostentatiously spacious, 1,500 square feet to be precise and feels more like a small house than a room. Modern amenities go a long way in ensuring comfort – air conditioning, traditional ceiling fans, in-room Wi-Fi and a bathroom that will make you gasp at the sheer size of it. The floor-to-ceiling windows enhance the feeling of capaciousness and you are spoilt for choice when it comes to a cleansing regime; a lavish freestanding tub, indoor or outdoor shower and double vanities. The foldaway glass doors lead to your covered deck where you can spend copious amounts of time on your daybed or splash about in your private terrace plunge pool. Privacy is an essential part of your stay at Chief ’s Camp and the ten pavilions are impeccably constructed to ensure your seclusion. On the main lodge deck, I am introduced to my professional guide, Carter Tuelo. After the enjoyment of High Tea, we depart for our afternoon

T R A V E L game drive where the sightings of tsessebe and its young, a lilac-breasted roller, a highly pregnant zebra and a journey of giraffe make for excellent photographic opportunities. A lone elephant bull is surveying the habitation in search of his next meal; there is plenty of food for him. For sundowners, we stop alongside the dam where a pod of hippos delightfully exhibit their playfulness. Back at Chief ’s Camp, I freshen up before joining the rest of the guests for dinner. The choices are splendid – for starters: spinach soufflé or bean soup with parmesan crisp. For main course, I choose the perfectly prepared slices of grilled kudu loin with roasted potato, bacon, walnuts, rocket, dried cranberries and croutons and for dessert, the delectable berry mousse concludes my delicious meal. I am relieved to have Carter escorting me to my pavilion after dinner as two hyenas come scurrying out of the bushes next to my room - I’m not sure who got the bigger fright. Safely in my room, I lock the door; keeping unwanted visitors out. After a cleansing shower with the fragrant Africology products, I retire to my bed where the mosquito net has been dropped to keep unwelcome critters away. The two three-quarter beds are pushed together and my side has been turned down. The ceiling fan and air conditioner eradicate the heat and humidity and soon I’m fast asleep. I am dressed before my 05:30 wake-up call and when I hear Carter saying ‘good morning’ outside my door, I am able to continue my amazement at the sights and sounds of the African bush. Alone on my deck, I sit in wonderment after sunrise and witness the two naughty hyenas taking a drink from the watering hole. As I leave my pavilion for breakfast at 6am, their footprints are in the sand right in front of my door. I quietly think it’s a good thing I locked my door for the night! At the dining area, the smell of freshly brewed coffee and home baked croissants will convert the biggest grump into a morning person. Ready for our game drive, Carter’s radio communication seems intense. He drives with vigor to show us what the other guide has discovered – a cheetah with three cubs feeding on a kill. We are speechless, not only because cheetahs are not easily spotted (no pun intended), but to be able to witness the interaction between mom and her cubs is astonishing. They are very nervous eaters and between the four of them, one is always on the lookout for danger. They will eat their fill and leave the carcass for further consumption by scavengers should anything be left. The vultures are starting to circle and an impala is barking its disdain, having lost one of their young to the cheetahs. Brunch is a hearty variety of meals and the favorite seems to be ‘make your own pizza’ with a selection of toppings and the pizza perfected in the pizza oven. Instead, I opt for the lamb rack with roasted cherry tomatoes, olives and spicy couscous. For dessert, I request the melt-in-your-mouth vanilla ice cream, the creamiest ice cream I have ever tasted. Walking back to my room, I wonder if I may stumble upon another animal making its appearance. Thankfully only the tree squirrels are running amok, leading the way for me. As I unlock my front door, I pause for a moment to savior the elaborate lodging, impeccably designed and furnished to encapsulate a true safari chic experience. Dark wooden colors and contrasting whites blend flawlessly to capture the ultimate in luxury. Exclusivity and authenticity are key factors at Chief ’s Camp and the re-imagination of past into present combines history with the future of stylishness and refinement. High Tea is served and I am tempted to ask for a second serving of the scrumptious strawberry pavlova. As we head out for our afternoon game drive, a warthog is rummaging through the leaves while her three curious piglets make everyone exclaim at their cuteness. Once she has finished foraging, they all set off, tails in the air. 57 Upscale Living Magazine |

An African fish eagle is perched on the bare branches of a tree. A bird usually takes flight when you get too close in proximity, but this one stays put until we can marvel at his glory. He fluffs out his tail feathers and as he takes off, his impressive wingspan has us all in awe. Dusk is starting to fall and we approach a densely vegetated area. Another vehicle is parked on an embankment when we suddenly see him – The King of the Jungle, the most majestic lion with an exquisite mane. He lies down to take a nap and suddenly gets up, walks around the back of the vehicle and hesitates for a moment. He is blind in his right eye, but it is clear that he rules his pride of a female and four subadult cubs. Driving back to camp, a marabou stork is silhouetted against the darkened sky. Dinner is a veritable feast and my main course choice is herb-butter beef fillet, sweet potato dauphinoise, stir-fried vegetables and red wine sauce. I ask the waitress if I may have some of the vanilla ice cream and am delighted when she brings me some. I am awoken during the night by baboons descending on my roof, and tree squirrels having a squabble. Hyenas are laughing in the distance and I hear the unmistakable sound of a lion roaring. Carter tries to locate the lion on our morning game drive and as luck would have it, he finds the lion and the hyenas. The lion is on the prowl and the hyenas are greeting each other with their trademark sniffing of genitals. We are not sure whether the one is ticklish or just showing dominance with a toothy grimace. His reaction makes us all laugh out loud. It is time to return home and after a rapid drive to the airstrip, I am able to see a herd of elephants having a refreshing splash in a watering hole down below from my window seat of the Cessna 206G. After landing at Maun International Airport, the journey back to Cape Town International Airport begins. We are scheduled to take off with our Airlink flight at 13:35. With all passengers seated, the captain starts the engines of the Embraer 135 and off we go, landing twenty minutes ahead of schedule, much to the delight of everyone on board. http://www.sanctuaryretreats.com/botswana-camps-chiefs Views expressed are the author’s own. | Photographs courtesy of Sanctuary Retreats Chief Camp and by Heléne Ramackers

THE WESTIN PUNE | By Jyoti Balani
O
ne of the most popular hotels in Pune, The Westin Pune is located in Koregaon Park, one of the most expensive and prominent localities in the city. A plush hotel with vast open spaces, The Westin Pune Koregaon Park houses 277 rooms in all including 189 Deluxe Guest Rooms, 73 Executive Club rooms and Club Suites. It was a pleasant surprise to be welcomed by luxurious amenities such as gourmet chocolates, fruits and a bottle of wine accompanied by a welcome note by General Manager Nishant Agarwal when I checked into a plush and spacious penthouse suite located on the 9th floor of the hotel.
“Being centrally located, The Westin Pune Koregaon Park is in close proximity to the airport and central business districts making it one of the most popular hotels in town” said General Manager Nishant Agarwal. He has been the General Manager of The Westin Pune Koregaon Park since 2016. He brings a wealth of hospitality experience with more than 16 years of hospitality experience. Nishant’s journey in the hospitality industry has been far-reaching given his achievements in the preceding years. In his current role as the General Manager of The Westin Pune Koregaon Park, he oversees the complete hotel’s operations and is also actively involved in the development and implementation of marketing
and operations plans as well as budget and goal programs to ensure optimum guest satisfaction, sales potential and profitability. Apart from having a vibrant personality, Nishant has a proficient on-site management style and excellent relationship-building abilities. During his free time, he loves to play squash with his two little toddlers. Those who have a fondness for gourmet cuisine will enjoy being in the hotel as there is something to cater to everyone’s palate. Executive Chef Sahil Sabhlok and his efficient team create unique culinary experiences for every guest who visits the hotel. I was treated to an interesting lunch by the friendly and efficient Executive Chef himself which comprised of an asparagus and goat cheese soup, scallops with green pea and cauliflower relish, salmon served during the main course and followed by a good looking sugar free chocolate dessert with a raspberry centre. The chef ’s team has a talented pastry chef Marimuthu Selvaraj and he created a fabulous range of chocolates, desserts and a gorgeous red velvet cake to showcase his talent. A meal at Kangan is a gourmet journey that a food enthusiast in Pune cannot miss! Kangan as the name suggests serves Indian cuisine

H O T E L specifically from Hyderabad and the North West Frontier. The elegant authentic Indian restaurant is a place where you can sample a variety of North-Indian dishes as I did recently. Kangan features delicate chandeliers reminiscent of decorative Indian bangles, or kangans, traditionally donned on women’s wrists for weddings and feasts— while kangan-adorned walls that evoke a distinct era al come together to create the ideal ambience for savouring authentic and delicious Indian fare. While in Kangan, a meal becomes even more interesting as one gets to observe expert chefs dish up delicacies owing to the presence of a tandoor show kitchen. Those who enjoy royal cuisine such as biryanis, koftas and mouth watering curries that originate from the land of the Nawabs and Mughal dynasty are in for a treat here. A glass of wine or whiskey is a great idea to enjoy with a fabulous meal as Kangan’s beverage menu has an extensive selection of some of the finest wines and whiskeys. A plethora of grilled meats, seafood, and vegetables enhanced by the use of spices make for a delectable meal at Kangan. The cuisine and ambiance is a great balance of the contemporary and historical. An all day dining restaurant, Seasonal Tastes is very popular for its Sunday brunches and breakfasts as I discovered during my recent stay. Daily Treats is a one-stop destination for gourmet delicatessen items such as fresh juices, delicious muffins, puffs, croissants, gourmet chocolates and an equally alluring selection of cakes, breads, decorative pastries and cookies which can be enjoyed with tea, coffee or smoothies. I noticed a cute white bicycle serving filter coffee with biscuits parked at Daily Treats. The moment one steps into Mix@36, it is obvious that this place is several notches higher than a regular lounge in Pune. A sauvé, retro lounge meant to attract busy corporates, young achievers as well as the regulars, Mix@36 is a lounge that spells luxury with a capital ‘L’. A perfect blend of retro music, innovative cuisine and muddled mixology, with a magnetic atmosphere and evoking music, Mix@36 is the perfect place to unwind and let go of a hectic day. Overlooking the Mula Mutha River, Mix@36 has long standing tables, cushy sofas to enjoy an informal chat and a snooker table too. All these factors make for a perfect evening for those looking to relax after a hard day’s work. For those who like to enjoy their evening drink under the stars, this venue is the ideal hangout as there is an Alfresco area as well. This outer area also known as the Riverview deck of Mix@36 is a visual delight what with LED-lit high standing tables. Live counters on the open air bar deck add to the already enthralling ambiance. DJs belts out an eclectic, cool, Latin and international global 67 Upscale Living Magazine

H O T E L S mix of sounds. Gleaming blue lights lend a cool contemporary look to the inside section of Mix@36, providing a majestic ambiance to the lounge. The weekend sundowners at this popular lounge are a big hit with the young crowd in Pune. This attractive lounge lives upto its name and whips up an innovative range of cocktails and this time I tried a litchi flavoured cocktail which was delicious. The lounge has an interesting food menu for those who wish to eat a little something while enjoying a drink. I spent a relaxing weekend in the hotel owing to the efficient spa therapists at the Heavenly Spa located at the lobby level. Heavenly Spa by Westin provides state of the art treatments and facilities that cater to all aspects of wellness needs. Equipped with sauna, steam rooms, jet tubs, The Heavenly Spa is designed by the prominent Andy Fisher Workshop and Design Cell and offers a repertoire of treatments such as massages, wraps, facials, scrubs as well as soaks. This 900 sq. ft spa has 6 treatment rooms each with their own steam and shower amenities. The Heavenly Spa managed by Anu Mohan has two couple treatment rooms called Embrace and Escape which offer more space for a personal retreat. The Signature Heavenly Massage is a must try experience during which, a warm heat pack is applied to the back releasing stress, followed by a powerful aromatherapy remedy to release any tension held in the body. Ideal for improving blood circulation and increasing one’s energy levels, therapists at this spa claim that relaxation comes from the harmonious balance of smell and touch. This time I also tried the anti aging facial which did wonders for my skin. The Rollers Sage and Jet Lag Reliever are popular massages in this spa. The House of Medici reflects the core concept of the popular House of Medici – an Italian banking family, political dynasty and later a Royal house. This is Pune’s most popular nightclub and its interiors are breathtaking and mesmerized me as soon as I stepped into this elegant city hotspot in Pune. With an exuberant and majestic ambience, resonating the aura of Renaissance architectural design, an elegant décor, heart thumping live performances and a contemporary menu makes this an ideal destination to celebrate life every day when in Pune. Exquisitely carpeted wooden floors, lush leather furnishings, artistic Italian/Greek sculptures and royal chandeliers come together to give a feeling of pure opulence. The House of Medici also features the longest bar in the country with a 104 foot long horseshoe shape featuring a lavish beverage menu with signature cocktails created by combining unique flavors from fruits, spices and herbs. The beverage menu boasts of an extensive selection of single malts and whiskies, vodkas, beers and wines to suit all tastes. The House of Medici is the perfect place to unwind in the evening with Live Acts and Mixologists putting up their best show in a luxurious ambience with high end food and service. The fact that this high profile venue is located at one of the best locations in Pune-Koregaon Park add to it’s popularity with locals and tourists alike. The Westin Pune Koregaon Park is a great choice for a relaxing holiday or even for a weekend staycation or for business travel considering it offers high end cuisines in its multiple restaurants, one of the best spas in the city, a vibrant nightclub and lounge, friendly and efficient service along with beautifully designed rooms all of which add up to make for an uplifting experience!

LION SANDS TINGA LODGE
KRUGER NATIONAL PARK, SOUTH AFRICA By Heléne Ramackers
Two lionesses are fast asleep next to Huhlwa Road, which incidentally happens to be the Lion Sands Tinga Lodge staff access route. The younger of the two raises her head to snuffle the early morning air. A herd of buffaloes are recumbent a mere kilometre away. Will the lionesses endeavour to hunt? They don’t look emaciated enough to attempt a feeding frenzy and continue their daybreak slumber.
I
t is our last game drive at Lion Sands Tinga Lodge and what a perfect way to end our two night stay here with the grand finale of a lion sighting – we started off two days prior with some serious bundu bashing to witness the catnap of three male lions from the Tsalala breakaway pride. The one seemed transfixed by our presence and I can still feel his yellow eyes staring into my soul. To recharge my batteries, the one and only place I profess wanting to go to is the Bush. The wide open spaces, the untainted air, the animals in their natural habitat; I can go on for days about the benefits of waking up surrounded by Mother Nature. Having my husband and daughter accompany me makes a family breakaway so much more gratifying, especially seeing the wonder of her experiences through my daughter’s eyes. 70 Upscale Living Magazine |
As a family of three, we are accommodated in the newly-built Tinga Hi’Nkweni (pronounced Hing Kweni) Family Villa. A self-contained freestanding Villa, it is generous in size and at 3714 sq ft, it feels like home the moment you open the imposing wooden front door. An outside area with a private pool and covered patio, hot summer days are well spent in the refreshing clear water under powder blue skies. As we enter our Villa, our jaws drop in unison at the sheer size of where we are staying. A kitchenette with a dining section, a lounge area, two full en-suite bedrooms with all the modern conveniences you can hope for – air conditioning, ceiling fans, a digital safe, hairdryer, in-room telephone, indoor and outdoor showers, a freestanding bath, double vanities and free Wi-Fi, it can accommodate four adults and two children with ease. We are ushered to the main deck at Lion Sands Tinga Lodge for lunch and a hot day coupled with a warm breeze has us rushing through our meal to get back to the comfort of our Villa. The food is delicious and my husband orders the baby marrow & mint soup and for main course, he has the battered fish & chips while my daughter and I opt for the grilled beef fillet on ciabbata bread. A few vervet monkeys innocently sit and wait in the branches of the jackalberry tree, eyes cast sideways, to pounce given half a chance. After High Tea at 4pm, which is a selection of treats – chocolate eclairs, vegetable pizza, chocolate chip biscuits and a fruit bowl - we embark on our game drive with guide Jabulani Manzini and tracker Wanted Lubisi. Traversing the 12,500 acre private concession you are spoilt with animal sightings galore. The reserve is teeming with baby impalas and as we round a corner, we laugh at the vision of a hyena oblivious to our existence, having a nap in a mud puddle. A herd of buffalo have the same idea and once they have finished feeding, immerse themselves one by one in a pool of mud to cool off.

Out in the clearing, the most beautiful leopard cub sits all alone waiting for her mother. She seems quite relaxed and at eight months of age, can fend for herself. She seems unbothered by the hyena sounds in the distance. Back at Lion Sands Tinga Lodge, we are seated on the main deck where we enjoy a delectable dinner. We are escorted to our Villa as walking after dark and before sunrise is not permitted as animals are free to roam. My daughter and I play a game of noughts and crosses before calling it a night. The fresh air has done her the world of good and she is asleep as her head touches the soft and silky pillow. My nightly ritual of a shower before bed time is restorative and the Africology products are so fragrant that I make a mental note to purchase some at the gift shop to take home with me. My sleep is disturbed by the most incredible electric storm with thunder, lightning and rain creating a blank canvas for the following day’s game drive. Another advantage of staying at Hi’Nkweni Villa is that you have your own private safari vehicle and guiding team, so you can tailor-make your preference of when to go on safari. We decide to wait for the rain to abate before heading out. It is still drizzling slightly as we meander through the reserve and the birds are relishing the cooler atmosphere. The most colourful violet backed starling is perched on a tree branch and we see a yellow billed hornbill catching an insect to feed its chicks, safely esconded in the bark of a tree. Two elephant cows are followed by their young, eating their way through the surrounding vegetation. The small calf is the cutest baby I have ever seen and stays securely tucked behind his mother. Jabulani guesses the calf to be less than a month old because he is still pink behind his ears. Another indicator of his age is the fact that his mom keeps him close to her by emitting a rumble. Much to our amusement, the small tot tries to feed on a shrub but elephants that age haven’t grasped the use of their trunks quite yet. Back at Lion Sands Tinga Lodge, it is time for breakfast. My daughter loves croissants and gets brought a whole plate full of miniature ones. My husband and I thoroughly enjoy our English breakfast and by now the day has warmed up enough to justify a swim in our pool. The late afternoon game drive is uneventful as the heavy rain the previous night doesn’t allow for us to go off-road with the risk of soil erosion. During our drinks stop, we take in the most picturesque sunset with different hues of pink and oranges. It is suggested to us to dine in our Villa, which seems like a good idea and our three courses are promptly brought to us. My daughter and I feast on the beef fillet while my husband chooses to make his dinner into a meat and fish combination. The food is very tasty and with everyone satiated, we play a game of 30 seconds before retiring to bed. As we finish our last game drive, a woodland kingfisher calls out. He rapidly takes off, showcasing his exquisite bright blue wings. A different bird will be transporting us home and as the gleaming Airlink Embraer 135 plane takes flight, the jets propel us into the skies, homeward bound. Views expressed are the author’s own. SPLURGING AT SEA CUSTOMIZED LUXURY YACHT VACATIONS | By Alona Abbady Martinez
Whether it’s St. Tropez to Monaco, Calvi to Cala di Vope, or a week exploring the Caribbean, Camper & Nicholsons International has the luxury super yachting adventure for you. Camper & Nicholsons, first founded in 1782, is considered to be the experts in high-end luxury yachting. With 13 offices worldwide, financial offices in Monaco, and U.S. headquarters in West Palm Beach, their reach spans across the world.
B
arbara Dawson, lead charter broker based in West Palm Beach, has been in the business for almost 30 years, 23 of those with the company. “We cover a wide spectrum of yachts. Larger yachts are 90 feet and above, but our largest yachts run 400 feet.” Prices for yacht charters range from $25k to $3-4 million dollars a week, with some clients booking for up to 6 weeks. All trips are custom-tailored and can take place literally anywhere in the world.
“You dream it, we make it happen!”, Dawson assures. The biggest demand has been in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, although more exotic locations are seeing a rise in popularity. “We have seen a big push for the Antarctic. We have a yacht called Legend which is simply phenomenal.” Legend is an award-winning 254-foot icebreaker turned luxury explorer yacht. It is available for charters in more remote areas of the world, such as Antarctica, Greenland, the Norwegian Fjords and the Arctic circle and also cruises throughout Europe, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and South America. With 13 luxury cabins, it can accommodate up to 26 guests. The yacht has a swim platform and a swimming pool, a gym, Balinese spa with sauna, Jacuzzi and beauty salon, movie theatre and entertainment system, medical suite, and any toy you can imagine from paddle boards to jet-skis to snow scooters. It also boasts a helicopter landing pad that is commercially certified as well as a submarine stored in a garage on the forward deck (both offered at an extra cost.) There are 19 crew on board as well as 10 expedition crew members (doctor, ice-pilot, expedition leaders, naturalists.)

Popular Mediterranean spots include Italy and Greece. Dawson also encourages prospective clients interested in a trip to this part of the world to consider Turkey, an area she believes has some of the best cruising. For those seeking something a little more forgotten, Dawson also has the perfect spot.
Trending boasts a super-sized sundeck with a large hot tub surrounded by sun pads and a bar, the perfect venue for enjoying a sunset cocktail. The indoor skylounge on the bridge deck includes a large bar, opening with an extension to accommodate al fresco dining for 12. There are plenty of water activities available as well: stand up Yamaha jet-skis, Sea-Doo watercraft, SeaBobs, glass bottom kayaks, paddleboards, kite surfing gear, a netted swimming pool with inflatable decking and scuba diving gear with PADI instructors ready to help explore the turquoise waters.
“Indonesia is great if you want something a little more remote.”
Each Camper & Nicholsons yacht comes with a full crew, chef, insurance of the vessel and the vessel itself. Payment must be made fully in cash one month before the trip is to begin. Parallel to providing the finest luxury yachts in the industry, Camper & Nicholsons’ priority is the client.
For this destination Dawson recommends a long-time favorite, Lamima. It accommodates 14 guests with 7 cabins and 20 crew members and has a cruising speed of 10 knots. Created by esteemed yacht designer Marcelo Penna, Lamima, known to be the world’s largest wooden sailing yacht just shy of 214 feet, merges traditional Indonesian hospitality with modern superyacht opulence. It offers inviting al fresco dining and a lounging area shaded by a Bimini top where qualified SPA therapists will help you unwind with message therapy. For adventure-seekers, Lamima has two PADI diving instructors happy to teach beginners or guide advance divers throughout the biodiverse waters of Asia. Onboard tour guides give guests a first-hand account of the history, culture, and local customs of the islands explored. Camper & Nicholsons yachts for Mediterranean and the Caribbean excursions include Clicia, a 137-foot vessel with 5 cabins for up to 10 guests and Trending, a motor yacht featuring 6 cabins for up to 12 guests. Clicia’s main saloon boasts full height windows, making the space warm and inviting while providing a light and airy atmosphere. The vessel has a cardio gym and a relaxing sky lounge on the upper deck which also benefits from floor to ceiling windows that inundate the interior with sunlight and offer exceptional panoramic views. And one must not overlook Clicia’s outside space: an expansive sun deck that accommodates a bar, plenty of comfortable seating arrangements, and a Jacuzzi surrounded by sun pads is fodder for timeless memories.

“It is important that clients feel comfortable with the company and broker because of the nature of the transaction and Camper & Nicholsons, as well as its brokers, have a long-standing record of professionalism and trust,” Dawson states. Their track records speak volumes, with most of their business being repeat customers. Others are adventurers that have tried everything except luxury yachting and want to give it a try. Dawson recommends booking in advance so there is plenty of time to customize the client’s individual needs and get them the perfect yacht for their trip. Still, never one to shy away from a challenge, Dawson confidently reassures she can and has designed last-minute excursions that clients have raved about. “I can do it a week before,” she laughs. The Source at Sula Vineyards
INDIA’S FIRST HERITAGE WINERY RESORT | By Jyoti Balani
Recently I was invited to visit The Source at Sula Vineyards- India’s leading wine company in Nashik in India, a beautiful Tuscan-style boutique resort situated at the site of Sula’s historic first winery which heralded the birth of Nashik as India’s premier wine region.
S
ula Vineyards is a wine company in India that has pioneered several unique concepts in the wine industry, including wine tourism. Rajeev Samant founder and CEO- Sula Vineyards came up with Beyond Vineyard Resort in Nashik. Close to Sula Vineyards, at the edge of Gangapur Lake, the
Sky Villa is a great choice for those looking for a uniquely luxurious holiday in the vicinity of vineyards. Three tastefully designed suites overlooking the lake comes with a personal caretaker. The Source used to be Sula’s first winery that has been now converted into a 23 room boutique retreat with a spa, one that is located within the vineyards so that visitors can have a holistic experience all at one place, under one roof. A wine enthusiast can be part of the wine making process, understanding how grapes are chosen and how wines are made. Cecilia Oldne, Vice President, Marketing and Global Brand Ambassador, Sula Vineyards says, “Besides being the largest wine producer in India, we have pioneered wine tourism in the country. Over the years, we have emerged as one of the most visited vineyards in the world and have es-
tablished ourselves as the #1 spot globally where people drink their first glass of wine. We also play a significant role in putting Nashik on the world wine map with Sula Vineyards being the biggest non-religious tourist site in Maharashtra today. The growing number of annual visitors and the many prestigious awards for our contribution to wine tourism in the country is testimony to our efforts in this direction. Nashik is only a three hour beautiful drive from Mumbai through the stunning Western Ghats and our vineyards are a must visit for anyone who hasn’t been yet!” The Source at Sula has 23 unique rooms, including a tower suite, ten vineyard view rooms, four courtyard view rooms, four vineyard view suites, four charming ‘closer to nature’ Tree Houses. Our visit began with a lunch hosted by Sula’s Chief winemaker Karan Vasani followed by a

tour of the resort conducted by Head of Sula’s Hospitality Operations Monit Dhavale. Sula’s award-winning wines are available nationwide at the finest hotels and restaurants and are also exported throughout the world. Sula is also a pioneer in India’s wine tourism opening the country’s first winery Tasting Room in 2005 and first vineyard resort, Beyond by Sula, in 2007. With over 230,000 visitors last year, Sula is one of the most visited wineries in the world and the first place where Indians first taste wine. Sula Vineyards won the prestigious Drinks Business Award 2016 for the ‘Best Contribution to Wine and Spirits Tourism’! This is the first time an Indian company has won a Drinks Business Award. Firmly committed to remaining at the forefront of Indian wines, Sula continues to experiment with new varietals, engages in sustainable agriculture and supports the local rural economy. Well on its way to becoming one of the world’s most sustainable wine producers, the company is also a leading wine and spirits importer, with Sula Selections, a portfolio of prestigious brands like Remy Cointreau, Hardys, Cono Sur and Asahi. With facilities like a swimming pool, tennis court, spa, gym and restaurant, along with Sula’s signature wine tourism activities such as winery tours and tasting sessions with the winemakers, there’s lot to keep one busy while at The Source. Located closer to the resort, the Tasting Room is a vibrant structure playing some of the most popular music, coupled with fantastic views of the vineyards and some great food to taste while sipping on a glass of Sula wine. Visitors can also find their preferred wine by tasting several wines varietals and they can later buy their choice of wines. Sula Vineyards also houses Soma and Little Italy for those who prefer a full fledged lunch or dinner. While on my way inside The Source, I noticed cheerful yellow colored bicycles lined up, I was informed that guests often went cycling up and 78 Upscale Living Magazine JANUARY 2018
around the vineyards. Monit Dhavale, Head of Sula’s Hospitality Operations said, “People from all over the world want to come stay at our vineyards which are now world famous. Our other properties Beyond by Sula with also Sky Villa are very popular and have their own charm but we could not think of a better place and experience to offer than one at the building of our very first winery.” Cecilia Oldne, VP- Marketing and Global Brand Ambassador, Sula Vineyards said, “We have retained much of the Rahul Mehrotra designed winery’s original structure and added a Tuscan twist to it! You really feel a part of history spending time at The Source at Sula. It’s truly a stunning property and a must visit!” During a wine tasting session in the resort, we were introduced to Sula Vineyard’s latest offering, The Source Grenache Rose which comes in an elegantly created bottle with minimalistic design elements on the label! The Source Grenache Rosé comes from the lush vineyards of Sula, and this beautiful dry ‘Grenache’ has been named after the historic site being now turned into a luxury resort where I was hosted. The launch of this new wine marks the introduction of a Super Premium Rose to the Sula portfolio. The Source Grenache Rose has a pale coral hue with inviting aromas of white peach, citrus and tropical fruits. With a luxuriant mouth feel, bright acidity and an elegant finish, this dry rose is the perfect wine for every occasion and can also serve as an aperitif on a warm day. It’s great for a backyard barbecue with salad, fish or chicken and goes really well with spicy Asian cuisine. A stay at The Source in Sula Vineyards in the city of Nashik in India was a fabulously unique experience in the midst of nature, great food and excellent Indian wine. Worth several visits when in India!

2015 CHATEAU TRIJET BORDEAUX This inexpensive, non-mevushal wine is yet another winner. Château Trijet is made with grapes that are organically grown, according to the European standards, which means that little to no pesticides are used on the vines. A blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, medium-bodied, with a silky mouth-feel as well as notes of raspberries, black cherries, lavender and tobacco. It is very pleasant to drink now with meat or poultry dishes either cold or warm and will likely develop some of those lovely notes of wet earth and barnyard funk as it develops in the bottle over the next few years.
HIGHLAND PARK THE DARK Highland Park latest special edition, THE DARK is a 17-yearold single-malt Scotch whisky which has been exclusively matured in first-fill European oak sherry-seasoned casks and bottled at 52.9% ABV and delivers a distinctly deep flavor packed with dried fruits, nuts and spices and overlaid with hints of smoky peat, the perfect drink to escape from the wild weather outside, to meet up with friends and family and enjoy sharing long evenings of conversation over a dram or two.
PISCO PORTON Pisco Porton is a super premium pisco, Peru’s native drink. Made from estate-grown grapes and traditionally crafted, Porton has become a favorite of many. Luscious Lemon Loaf Lemon zest, lemon juice, and lemon oil combine to give this simple cake real zing. Don’t be tempted to skip the lemon oil, as it adds a wonderful fragrance and intense lemon flavor that lemon extract can’t match. Cold pressed from the zest of oranges, limes, or lemons, citrus oils are concentrated and fragile. They must be refrigerated once the bottle is open, but even then they don’t last forever. SALTED BUTTER PECAN CAKE If a sticky bun and a layer cake fell in love and got married, this cake would be their baby. It is best served freshly baked and slightly warm from the oven while the caramel and pecan topping is still gooey, but if made ahead of time, simply reheat in a low oven just until warm. Please note the topping uses salted butter while the cake calls for unsalted butter. This is important to get the perfect salty/sweet balance. Serves 8 Topping: ½ cup (110g) salted butter 1 cup (200g) firmly packed golden brown sugar 3 tablespoons Golden Syrup ¼ teaspoon vanilla 1 tablespoon bourbon (optional) 1 cup (120g) chopped pecans, toasted 1-1/2 cups (150g) sifted cake flour 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon fine sea salt ½ cup unsalted butter, at room temperature ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar ¼ cup (50g) firmly packed golden brown sugar 2 eggs 2 tablespoons Golden Syrup 2/3 cup (160g) sour cream 1/12 teaspoon vanilla ¼ teaspoon Maldon Sea Salt (for sprinkling) Position a rack in the center of the oven. Preheat the oven to 350°. Coat a 9-inch round cake pan with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside. To make the topping: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the salted butter. When the butter starts to bubble and turn golden, add the brown sugar and golden syrup. Decrease the heat to medium and stir until the sugar melts and

starts to bubble. As soon as the mixture starts to boil, cook for 1 minute exactly, stirring continuously. (Boiling for more than a minute will result in caramel that will harden on the cake and be difficult to slice.) Remove from the heat and stir in the pecans. Pour immediately into the prepared pan, using a small spatula to spread in an even layer. Set aside. For the batter: In a medium bowl, sift together the cake flour, baking powder, and fine sea salt. In a separate bowl using an electric mixer set at medium speed, beat together the butter, granulated sugar and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 4 minutes. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, scraping down the sides of the bowl after each addition. Beat in the golden syrup, sour cream and vanilla. With a rubber or silicone spatula, fold in the flour mixture by hand, just until the batter is combined and streaks of white remain. Spoon the batter over the topping in the pan, smoothing it evenly with a spatula. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until a wooden skewer inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Transfer the pan to a wire cooling rack and let cool for 5 minutes. Invert the cake onto a serving plate. If any bits of caramel or nuts remain in the pan, simply scrape them from the pan and spread over the cake with a spatula. Sprinkle the Maldon Sea Salt over the top of the cake. Serve warm, cut into thick wedges. should have about 2 tablespoons remaining; set aside for the icing.) the sour cream, vanilla, and lemon oil. Set aside.

“SPIRIT
The new Bar Cabinet by Vismara Design

Its polished-brass handles are not mere functional elements; on the contrary, they can act like protagonists thanks to their sophisticated design and artfully studied aesthetics.
Vismara Design decided to honour this long tradition with its personal interpretation and, therefore, with the creation of Spirit, a polished, freshand modern-styled bar cabinet.
The bar cabinet interior is its cornerstone, a space planned to the last detail so as to be perfect to best put the bar equipment: glasses, high-profile bottles and specific tools. Thanks to an intimate and skillfully organized space, both enthusiasts and experts will be lavishly equipped to try their hand at the fascinating art of mixology.
istory of bar cabinets sinks its roots in the booming 1950s, a period of great changes and revolutions. The need of having a private space where to spend time with friends while sipping a drink set a new trend, the Bar Cabinet, as a symbol of entertainment and carefreeness.
Spirit is characterized by a delicate albeit impactful design; its long conical legs contribute to streamline the whole structure. What makes this bar cabinet unique is its precious doors, inlaid with Makassar ebony, an exotic wood that comes from the Far East. Its elegant stripes create a marvellous play of light and color, with a truly unique effect. 84 Upscale Living Magazine |
