PAGANI HUAYRA CODALUNGA An $8M Love Letter to Le Mans Racing Cars

| BY SOMNATH CHATTERJEE

P

agani is no stranger to pantomime with its ‘larger than life’ hyper cars celebrating art rather than just being on a brutal conquest of speed. Pagani is about design and everything is meticulously engraved to look like it belongs to the Louvre. Hence, it is no surprise that its latest car, called the Huayra Codalunga, is yet another striking homage to old Le Mans racing cars. The long rear overhang gives a hyper car the longtail name and it is done for aerodynamic purposes while also looking prettier in the process. The Huayra has always been a stunning design that has withstood the test of time but the long-tail version gives added gracefulness along with a sense of natural beauty. Its uncorrupted lines are beautifully blended within the ‘long-tail’ silhouette. With the Codalunga, Pagani has been inspired by old Italian craftsmanship and the race cars from the 60’s. Hence, the lines are clean and sinous with an elegant shape without being festooned by cuts or slashes. The story of this car started way back in 2018 when two Pagani collectors asked Horacio to produce a long-tail version of the Pagani Huayra Coupé along with idea being to create a streamlined design and an elegant hyper car which would be at home on the roads as well as being gawped at a stand at international Concours events. Pagani’s own special projects division called as Pagani Grandi Complica-

12 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2022

zioni worked with clients to make this beautiful new creation. Even though it is limited to just five units and it is a one-off kind of car, the project was akin to any new product with considerable resources being deployed plus being a road car it had to meet all the norms. Like all Pagani cars, Leonardo da Vinci’s principles can be seen with the design and the long body has a low drag plus has been made by hand using aluminum alloy. The rear engine cover for example has a footprint of more than 3.7 m2 and that makes it around 360 mm longer than the one of the Huayra Coupé. The power-train is the staple Pagani V12 with 840 HP and 1,100 Nm of torque. The most alluring part of the design is the rear styling with the exhaust system, which is made from titanium and weighs only 4.4 kg (9.7 lb). As said earlier, the long-tail aims at reducing weight and improving aero while the car only weighs 1,280 kg (2,822 lb). A signature design element of the Huayra remains with the four flaps with variable profiles. The interior uses aged suede leathers for the 60’s race car vibe complete with neutral colors and semi-matte or fully matte paints. However, like any Pagani, the exposed carbon fiber finish remains. At near $8 million, the Huayra Codalunga might just be the jewel in the crown amongst all Paganis.

ROLLS-ROYCE BOAT TAIL The Exclusive $30M Rolls-Royce for a Select Few | BY SOMNATH CHATTERJEE

Y

ou can walk into a Rolls-Royce showroom and order a Phantom, Ghost or a Cullinan but you cannot order the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail. This car is a sneak peek at an exclusive club of elite Rolls-Royce customers where price is never discussed and bespoke luxury means creating your own car with a distinct theme. Personalization is highly sought after in the luxury world but highly crafted bespoke luxury is the ultimate showcase of one’s personality and tastes. Hence, to be able to create your own car is something which the jet set hanker for. Ferrari does this, and so does Lamborghini, while Rolls-Royce has its own bespoke division with a 100-strong staff being there to cater to the demands of its most loyal customers. Entry to this secretive club is impossible for the standard car-buyer or even any Rolls-Royce owner, as only its top clients get this privilege. The Rolls-Royce Coach-build commission happens in a very unique way, and involves the client visiting the RollsRoyce factory, and being deeply involved in the design to the process of making the car. It isn’t a case of throwing a black cheque at Rolls-Royce as here the customer comes up with the idea and the car-maker takes it up within the realms of its automotive canvas. The first Boat

Tail showed the same level of personalization and the attention to detail while its price was never publicly declared. It’s never about the price as it is just a long number for the clients.

hue. Being a Rolls-Royce, the massive Pantheon Grille cannot be forgotten and is milled from a single, solid billet of aluminium while the Spirit of Ecstasy is draped in rose gold.

The second Boat Tail follows the same template as the earlier one being largely hand-built from sheets of aluminium and that makes each car unique. The second car has been commissioned by a client who comes from the pearls industry. At the start of the design process, the client presented four pearl shells, from his private collection to be used as an inspiration for the exterior color palette. The second Boat Tail comes in this unique hue consisting of a blend of oyster and soft rose while white and bronze mica flakes have been added for a pearlescent finish. The contrasting cognac-colored bonnet has been made specifically for this car while laced with fine bronze and gold colored aluminium mica flakes. Then the technical fiber lower sills of Boat Tail also have a rose gold woven thread.

The same exterior design philosophy is carried out on the inside with cognac and oyster-colored leathers and Royal Walnut veneer, with rose gold and mother-of-pearl accents. The transmission tunnel is formed from Royal Walnut veneer with rose gold pinstripes being a nod of inspiration from the rear deck.

The rear deck is beautifully draped with Royal Walnut veneer along with rose gold-plated pinstripes with a satin-brushed finish. Cars like these go beyond technology and the veneer was chosen by the client for its unique colors since it will mature into a cognac like

14 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2022

As mentioned earlier, the dashboard contains a timepiece made from motherof-pearl along with the same effect chose for the control switches and instrument dials. Alex Innes, Head of Coach-build Design, said, “Boat Tail is a step-change in ingenuity and creative liberty. Building a motor car by hand offers a new realm of exploration and possibility: we can accomplish things and resolve challenges that normal industrialized methods would prohibit. This is the tale of two worlds: a modern motor car of contemporary design, made possible by historical techniques and time-honored craft. It is truly, one-of-a-kind.”.

BENTLEY AZURE RANGE Embraces comfort and Luxury Even More!

| BY SOMNATH CHATTERJEE

B

entley cars are always known for their performance, luxury, and comfort but now the Crewe-based luxury brand has taken things to a new level with their Azure range. The focus is now on the well-being and comfort of the vehicle’s occupants and this range is available with the Bentayga, Bentayga EWB, Flying Spur, Continental GT, and Continental GTC. Bentley says that it is not some new variant or a specific new trim level as the entire spectrum of comfort, luxury, and craftsmanship is looked at along with the addition of driver assistance technologies. The performance bit is left with the ‘Speed’ range as now Bentley wants its owners to relax. The first vital component is the seat and all Bentley Azures feature the front seat comfort specification with up to 22-way adjustable seats and a nifty heating and ventilation function where the body’s optimum temperature for comfort and alertness is maintained. Azure features a massage function with six programmable settings which constantly make constant micro-adjustments in muscle and posture that prevent fatigue. The adjustable side bolsters, electric seatbelt adjustment and comfort headrests also feature here. The

Bentley Dynamic Ride has a 48V active anti-roll control system that improves ride comfort plus an array of driver assistance systems to reduce driver fatigue. Further additions to the equipment list include a Head-up Display and Night Vision, which uses infra-red cameras. Color, texture, tactility, and even scent is being monitored with the Azure range and even the sound levels are kept in check including managing acoustics. Like any Bentley, there is a vast choice of wood veneers and amongst them, Dark Walnut, CrownCut Walnut, and Koa are closer to the softer, comfort-oriented vibes. Azure customers also have a full range of 15 hide colors and color splits to choose from, with contrast stitching as standard and seat piping as a no-cost option. Exterior additions include Azure illuminated treadplates, Bentley ‘B’ foot pedals, mood lighting, and a duo-tone steering wheel with heating function plus 22” ten-spoke wheels. The Azure moniker was previously used for the convertible version of the Arnage saloon while now it returns as a more relevant form of luxury within the canvas of the demands of the modern-day Bentley buyer.

DELOREAN ALPHA 5 EV Back to the Future with the wedge-shaped DMC DeLorean

| BY SOMNATH CHATTERJEE

The wedge-shaped DMC DeLorean has been one of those iconic movie cars that have refused to fade away and its popularity was enough to instigate a fresh revival of sorts. However, the new DeLorean is a whole different kettle of fish when compared to the predecessor as now it has morphed into a curvaceous EV. The re-born DeLorean Alpha5 is an electric coupe and takes a different design approach from the boxy lines penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The new car has been designed by Italdesign and it has a swoopy look to it with contoured body panels. The flowing roof and the bold lines are in a sharp contrast with the original but a few of the iconic visual signatures have been kept intact including gullwing doors and the rear window lovres. The rest of the car stays away from the retro pastiche that could have taken away some of the visual drama of the new car. The massive gullwing doors continue to hold your attention and reveal a surprisingly spacious cabin. The interior is expectedly a far cry from the original model and features a clutter free dashboard along with a massive portrait touchscreen. However, the interior or the specs are par for the course in this EVdominated world, and it is the design plus the name that evokes a sense of nostalgia. The powertrain is different and augurs well with what the modern-day equivalent of the DeLorean ought to have. Its electric powertrain is estimated to be in the region of a 100+kWh battery pack and a 300-mile range estimate. An electronically limited top speed of 155 mph isn’t exactly hyper car fast but makes up for a thrilling GT which the Alpha5 hopes to be. We will know more details closer to the showcase of the car at the Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance in August. At a time when the EV segment is already bursting with capable contenders in form of the Lucid Air and others, the DeLorean will have to bank on its looks and its brand value to make a mark.

In 2016, Rose opened the Marlene Rose Gallery in Clearwater, Florida with the sole purpose of exhibiting her artwork. “When people first view my work, I’m often told they feel a “certain aliveness” inherent in the work itself. My goal as an artist is to inject life into whatever I can make. In simple terms to make the piece come alive”. She was quoted saying. “Each piece is hand cast from molten glass in a spectacular process of heat and light. AVRE

Ground yourself in Nature | BY FELICITY CARTER

A

responsible, and not to mention stylish fashion brand with sustainability credentials aplenty, AVRE is the footwear brand that should be on your radar. Founded in November 2019, in California by sisters Julie and Connie, at the heart of their brand is sustainability — recycle, reduce, reduce — and female empowerment. How so? Well, just look at the fabrication: the signature repurposed threads are made out of recycled water bottles (yes you read that correctly), and there are so many pros as the innovative 3D knit-to-shape technology allows for minimize waste, while the form and fashionable design offers maximum comfort, helping women the world over to live an eco-friendly lifestyle. Founders Julie and Connie tell us more about their brand message, aesthetic and how they’d like to see their label grow. Tell us about when and how you first started AVRE? AVRE was founded in November 2019 based on the message of sustainability and women empowerment. With the spirit of the Earth and women in mind, AVRE was built to be defined as Authentic, Versatile, Responsible, and Empowered. We had a desire to make a positive and sustainable change for all. We needed to create a better future for our children and future generations. What are the pillars of the label? Sustainability, women empowerment, and

community. How would you sum up the aesthetic? Elevated yet responsible and sustainable footwear that is the shoe for any look. AVRE shoes are not just for athleisure, they can be incorporated into everyday looks as well. Today’s modern women are versatile, and our footwear should be too. Who is your customer? Our customer is any woman looking for fashion, comfort, and sustainability. AVRE has quickly become the go-to shoe for the “it-girl”, mom-on-the-go, and everyone in between and have been seen on celebrities like Jessica Alba, Nina Dobrev, Eva Longoria, Olivia Munn, Jamie Chung, and more! Tell us about the process from mood board to production through to selling, and the materials that are used? Growing up in the family business we learned how much waste and pollution the fashion industry created. We wanted to show that fashion didn’t need to come at the expense of our planet. By incorporating groundbreaking and innovative materials and practices we could design footwear that could be worn by all women for all occasions. Each AVRE shoe is comprised of threads coming from 8-10 water bottles. These P.E.T. water bottles are taken, wasted, and chopped into tiny pieces and melted and reshaped into yarn. From there the shoes are

knit with a 3D knit-to-shape technology that reduces waste by creating precise sizes and eliminating the creation of scraps. By using recycled threads, we can create footwear with 45% less energy use, 20% less water consumption, and ultimately less C02 emissions overall. We also partnered with Bloom to further our mission of sustainability by using their algae outsoles. In doing so we help harvest harmful algae from waterways that then in turn improve our eco-systems. Ultimately, we protect our planet, reduce waste, improve air quality, and provide clean water. Which is your current favorite style from the collection and why? My favorite style is our Infinity Glide in the white/blk because it’s bold and distinguished in its design. Very identifiable and it was our first baby. This was the first style that announced who and what AVRE was about and that we arrived. How would you like the brand to evolve? We want AVRE to not only be known as a footwear brand but a lifestyle. We want our message to be a way of life for all to encompass. We want to leave a positive impact on others and our planet . We hope to expand into footwear for not women but also men and children as well as other products like clothing and accessories.

BREITLING SUPEROCEAN | BY SOMNATH CHATTERJEE

S

ome watches are about the craftsmanship and the story behind along with the design which envelops the entire personality of it. However, there is something endearing about a watch with an appeal stemming from its functionality. In other words, it is both form and function together in a minimalistic but stylish avatar. Breitling is not new to dive watches as it has been making them for a long time. It’s new SuperOcean collection however also takes inspiration from the past dive watches- especially from the 60s. In the 1960s scuba diving was all the rage and a dive watch perfectly fit under that scheme having quite a lot of significance in terms of timing. A dive watch then is an essential bit of kit that goes beyond just style. Hence, the new collection takes back the styling to the 60s and the 70s albeit within a modern canvas plus with all of the latest features. The ethos was clear from the start that needless extravagance was thrown away in favor of a functional look. The early SuperOceans had a high-contrast dial ring which was added to the minutes scale plus subtle indexes were shunned in favor of large luminescent batons for easy readability. Plus, Breitling had even removed the seconds hand since divers don’t really need it. The same philosophy has been carried over with the new SuperOcean with a minutes-based chronograph although a seconds hand has been added. Available in four sizes (46, 44, 42, and 36 mm), the dials of the watches under this collection are colorful and coincide with the hues of the sea along with aquatic life. The dials are 32 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2022

paired with three case metals in being steel, steel-gold, and bronze. Bronze has resistance to corrosion but will still develop a subtle patina which will add character to the watch. There are two strap options including a rubber strap and a new three-row metal bracelet strap which has a folding clasp that allows for micro-adjustments of up to 15 mm. Let’s talk functionality and here it is water-resistant to 300 m (1000 ft) while featuring a broad hands and indexes coated in Super-LumiNova. It also has a scratchproof ceramic-inlayed bezel which will never ever fade. This watch is also shock-, sand-, and saltwater-resistant. Its automatic Breitling Caliber 17 comes with a two-year warranty and an approximate 38-hour power reserve. For this collection, Kelly Slater, Stephanie Gilmore, and Sally Fitzgibbons are the faces and there is a special-edition SuperOcean Automatic 42 Kelly Slater designed with the surf champion and limited to 1000 pieces. It’s is distinguished by its orange dial and a military-green rubber strap. At a starting price of $4,600, the SuperOcean collection is a welcome addition that brings back the designs of the past but within the cloak of modernity. The pricing straddles a fine line between accessibility and collector watch status while also mixing the correct amount of the past with the present. We like the chunky designs and the dash of color along with the pared back simplicity which is etched neatly into this collection.

A

head of the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews (July 14-17), the R&A has brought out a new line of clothing to tempt lady golfers. This summer women golfers could be wearing Knickerbocker Glories, Loud Macleods, and Well Plaid and Plaid Awesome Tartans. Royal & Awesome is based in Scottish golf country. In Gullane on the east coast, not far from Edinburgh. It produces a range of “unexpected” golfing styles. Scott Woodworth’s Loudmouth is another golfwear outlet offering something a little different and many things -like frankfurter prints, Margarita plaid, Blasterpiece, Disco Balls shorts, Happy Hour mini shorts, and Shagadelic stretch-tech skorts – which are a lot different. This season, after Australian Cam Smith’s victory at the Players Tournament, the men don’t know whether they should be an Original Penguin or a Filtered Flamingo, or be a vision in caviar and black iris, or stick to being a shark, or go all out Waste Management Open and everyday John Daly, perhaps even full-on Peter Millar “Shipfaced”. They don’t know whether their crushed cranberry and chinchilla days are over, whether they are too old for Florida tangerine and horizontal stripes, and fluorescence. At a certain age where lies the line between conservative and radical. When does flamboy-

ant shade into pathetic? These concerns do not apply to the ladies. Their only dilemma is whether to dress as Flora, Adalyn, Carine, Celestine, Poppy or Joy, reflect on whether the weather’s right for a sassy skort, and decide whether it’s a Callaway Hummingbird or Kyjus half-zip day, or a Foray day, and when it’s time to step into some Byrdie Golf Social Wear or Tory Burch, or just get the toucan Waggle on. Scottish brand Glenmuir, founded in 1891, is still the traditional but modern default destination for women’s golfwear and golf glam; from mandarin-collared polo shirts to anti-curl collars, diamante buttoning and lurex accents to capris, gilets, waterproofs, and trousers, Glenmuir is on the same par Ping, Adidas, and Tail, but there are high-end golf tailors too. Kjus was founded by a Norwegian Olympic and World Cup champion. New York’s Fairway and Greene has been making high-end ladies’ golf apparel for over 25 years. Linda Hipp founded the LIJA label in Vancouver, Canada which has evolved from pushing boundaries in golf apparel to pushing boundaries in tennis, training, running, and yoga apparel. New York’s Foray offers everything from neoprene hoodies to V-necks, waffle knits to the latest in digital zigzag. You can even dress on course as a Neon Dentist! GG Blue’s first design was sketched out on a cocktail napkin looking out over the Pacific in Mexico. The

company is named after the founder’s daughter, Georgia Grace. Lucy Dickman’s Swing Out Sister is one of the UK’s top women’s golf brands offering all golf apparel from visors to capris. No golfer- male or female- is fashion ‘uninterested”. Nowadays, it’s all performance fabric and street style, logos, tapered trousers, detailed snap-up collars, and ditsy tropical patterns, whereas a man has to decide whether he is going to be Greg Norman or Bryson de Chambeau, the ladies’ style choice for the course and clubhouse is between the classical and conservative and the disruptive, revolting, and new. This means these days, either a trippy Torrey Pines Loudmouth teamed with Loudmouth Frankfurters, a radical Royal & Awesome, or an elegant and very conservative classic firm vintage cut navy pique Lacoste or Nancy Lopez polo, or a more modern colorblock, of course, you can turn heads at the Bag Drop with your all-the-way from Arizona comedy Labradoodle or Gopher Daphnes Headcover. Striking the right impression on the first tee is more important than striking the first shot. You only have one chance to make an impression. You have a hundred goes at making an impression – quite literally- on the golf course golf. At the end of the day, the best shots of the day should be of you.

JACOB & CO ASTRONOMIA TOURBILLON

BUCHERER BLUE | BY NIKITA VIVEK PAWAR

O

nly a few have traveled through the Earth’s atmosphere and even fewer timepieces. While most of this space - pun intended - is ruled by Omega’s iconic Speedmaster Professional, others are rising to that potential. Recently, a Japanese billionaire and private space tourist, Yusaku Maezawa, wore his Richard Mille RM 27-02 Tourbillon Rafael Nadal while onboard the International Space Station (ISS). Jacob & Co, Bucherer BLUE and Sotheby’s have come together for an exceptional timepiece - the Jacob & Co Astronomia Tourbillon Bucherer BLUE. It is also the first triple-axis tourbillon into space. Launched from the International Space Station (ISS) from the Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the AX-1 flight took off on April 8 and returned to Earth off the Florida coast on Monday, April 25. Onboard this SpaceX Axiom Space-1 flight were Michael López-Alegría (a professionally trained astronaut), Larry Connor (an American real estate and technology businessman), and Mark Pathy (a Canadian businessman and philanthropist) and finally, Eytan Stibbe. The Astronomia Tourbillon Bucherer BLUE is a one-off timepiece on the wrist of the Israeli impact investor and philanthropist Eytan Stibbe during the Rakia mission. Eytan Stibbe was in space for 17 days, 1 hour and 37 minutes. During this time, they orbited the Earth 273 times at an altitude of more than 400km, at a

speed of nearly 17,500 mph (28,263 km/h). According to Stibbe, the timepiece continued to “accurately display the time during the launch and return to Earth, enduring extremely high G-forces and also micro-gravity while in space”. “Bucherer BLUE is our platform for bringing to life daring projects with innovative partners. Together we strive to create the extraordinary and celebrate the drive and curiosity of our NextGen customers,” says Patrick Graf, Chief Commercial Officer of Bucherer. “Jacob & Co.’s exceptional timepieces, imaginative power, and can-do attitude make possible what seemed impossible before. Powered by the internationally renowned Sotheby’s, this collaboration brings the Bucherer BLUE philosophy to a whole new level, and we are incredibly excited that the Astronomia Bucherer BLUE went up to space, pushing boundaries beyond the expected.” The dark blue background dotted with stars represents the space with the model’s four key elements — dial, tourbillon cage, a diamond representing the moon, and a lacquered magnesium globe - held on four arms that make a complete rotation on a central axis every 20 minutes. This unique piece has a case of 50mm in white gold, surrounded by no fewer than five ultra-domed sapphire crystals to observe the movement. Talking about the technical capabil-

ities, this timepiece is identical to previous editions of the Astronomia. “It seems only fitting that the Astronomia Bucherer Blue ended up revolving around the Earth,” comments Jacob & Co. chairman Jacob Arabov. “The watch had the same viewpoint on us as we usually have on it.” Well, that’s not the end of an exciting journey for this one-off horological creation; this unique timepiece will be offered by Sotherby’s during an auction on July 26. It will be on view at Bucherer TimeMachine on 57th Street in New York City July 11-17 and at Sotheby’s in New York July 21-15. Offered with no reserve and bidding starting at $1, proceeds will be donated to benefit charities - an excellent opportunity to fulfill your space fantasies! While only one person will go down in history to own this iconic timepiece, Jacob & Co is giving 18 others an extraordinary opportunity to be part of this horological history. The exclusive 18-piece EpicX Bucherer BLUE Edition is a manually wound skeleton model in a 44mm black DLC titanium case with an engraving of an astronaut, clad in a spacesuit and helmet, gazing at the Earth from the space. Astronomia and EpicX watches imbue innovation and exploration of the unknown, going beyond time and space. 

DOMUS CATAMARAN

Rob Doyle & Van Geest collaborated on a 40m Trimaran Concepts that aims to be zero-emission | BY NIKITA VIVEK PAWAR

R

ob Doyle is one of the new generations of yacht designers tackling the modern challenges of the large yacht business. With a solid 20year career evolution in the large yacht sector, he and Van Geest Design have come together to present a 40-meter sailing catamaran - Domus. With an interior volume that rivals a 60-meter motor yacht, she aims to go eco-conscious cruising and become the first 'zero-emission' yacht over 750 GT. "Just because superyachts are what they are now, does not mean they should stay this way. We were constantly looking at every aspect of the design and saying, 'is there a better way? We truly believe that this project will redefine what a multi-hull sailing superyacht can be.", say the designers. Domus, meaning a single-story house built around an atrium in Latin, the yacht has a beam of 35m and features an interior space of 780 sq. m, all on one deck. The craft borrows aspects

of this design to create a lofty, open feeling on board. Rob Doyle and Van Geest Design have done extensive research into the practicalities and safety elements associated with trimarans. The trimaran spreads across two decks. She can accommodate 12 guests in six guest cabins, with four VIPs and two sizable owner's suites, each equipped with its own lounge area. There is a bar in the main saloon. Other amenities include a cinema room, gym and saloon. Domus also features a spa area with a swimming pool, making the trimaran fun and exciting. To help reduce drag and improve speeds, she can heel at an angle of two degrees. This will also ensure a comfortable cruise with minimal rolling. Domus is designed with an emphasis on performance. "The uniquely designed combination of solar power, hydro-regeneration technology and hydrogen fuel cells gives Domus unlimited range with zero emissions," the design team said. The trimaran powers

40 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2022

through the daylight hours and transfers over to the battery system at night. This also means Domus is entirely silent with zero emissions while at anchor. Alongside the 40-meter concept, the design duo are also working on a larger version of the idea for a shipyard. "We strongly believe if you want the benefits of multi-hulls at a 40-meter-plus size, the only practical solution is a trimaran," the design team added. As compared to catamarans, trimarans help keep down the costs. Domus has all the systems and engineering in the central hull, just like a standard construction to keep things simple. The main hull takes all the rigging forces, thus maintaining crossbeam structures simpler and generally the overall system being more straightforward. The team behind Domus are the design masterminds of over 60 superyachts and has extensive detailed design experience, knowledge and data, which makes it easy to undertake a mammoth of a project.

Maritime Musings with

Sarah Colbon | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS

C

o-founding Njord by Bergman Design House puts Sarah Colbon at the helm of interior architecture and design for the world’s most phenomenal superyachts. She took time out of her jam-packed schedule to chat exclusively to Upscale Living magazine about her love for her trade whilst creating a balance as a wife and working mom. Sarah, tell us a bit about yourself.

I’ve been immersed in the world of Superyachts for over 14 years now, rooted in my background of being brought up on the water on the south coast of England in Emsworth, in a small sailing village. Travelling the world gave me experiences running businesses in the fishing charters, tourist sailing charter yachts and so on in Australia, never as crew but only in the business marketing and PR sectors. Following a passion and a dream turned into a career journey in this small, family-like niche industry, working alongside owners and families, top shipyards, yacht management companies, brokerage and design sectors. This gave me the foundations and experience to see an opportunity to develop a new approach specifically in the design sector of the industry. Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path? I grew up on the water in a small sailing village on the south coast of England. My father was an avid sailor, and we were always with family sailing on the weekends and truly the love of boats and yachting started from such a young age. All my career I had the dream to work in the top luxury sector of yachting and I started by meeting some wonderful people in the industry when I lived in Australia. After working on the yachting industry for a while, one day I got the call: would you be interested in assisting us with styling our charter yacht fleet for photoshoots. The rest is history.

Njord was born in 2020 with people spending more time in their travel ‘bubble’ because of the restrictions placed on them by the global pandemic, with superyachts being the perfect escape – away from crowds and on the open sea with oodles of fresh air. What impact did the pandemic have on the resurgence of people wanting to live on their superyachts? It was more than that. Previously, superyachts for an owner were a charter to get away with family and enjoy holiday and special times; when the pandemic hit, suddenly their yacht became their home. They needed to have the freedom but not be land-based and also somehow yachts became a secure hub for them and their families when all the uncertainty happened. This is truly when the busiest times were for us at Njord, as owners were spending more time onboard and noticing that there was a serious lack of storage, bad lighting, and the circulation of the yacht for living onboard made no sense. We had also just met our superyacht Galaxy clients during these times, working on Zoom most days-never being able to see the yacht or meet them or the crew in person was hard. Again, this new owner wanted to live onboard, and having purchased this very well-known Benetti charter yacht, it was a time for change for them and for the yacht, hence our re-design of her and the comfort they now have onboard. How do you manage to turn a yacht into a home? Whether it’s a sailing yacht or a motor yacht, they are vessels floating on the water, they can all be homes, it’s about knowing your client and their family lifestyles. You adapt the interior to reflect this, knowing how to work with the interior infrastructure of the vessel, the crew service, and the circulation of a home. The impressive superyacht Galaxy took only five months to refit as opposed to the usual

42 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2022

18 months. How did you accomplish that? The Galaxy project was a refit broken down into phases. This allowed the client to live and enjoy their new yacht while Njord simultaneously worked their magic on the interior design. Phase one of the project took place in Spring 2021 and saw the addition of new rugs, artwork, exterior seating, cushions, and a general up-styling of the interior so the client could enjoy a summer season onboard whilst living in a space that felt more like home. The owner lived in the space and gave feedback to Njord first-hand on which areas they found most comfortable and which they used less, all of which helped to inform the second full refit phase. Every piece placed on board during phase one flowed into phase two, ensuring nothing was wasted. Once the concept was agreed, a full interior refit of the main guest areas took place alongside exterior styling, giving the yacht a new lease of life. With a goal to complete the project within five months, this would be the shortest time frame in which any superyacht has ever undergone a refit. Together with the trust and can-do attitude of the owners, the Monaco Marine shipyard and the formidable crew, Galaxy has done just that. Galaxy is no longer just another white Superyacht gracing the ocean along the French Riviera, she has been transformed into the private owners’ own floating universe, a home which encapsulates their lifestyle and a design that has never been done before on board a yacht of this kind. Galaxy is now a destination, a marvel that touches all your body’s senses and excites and embraces you with its energy during each step you take onboard, transporting her owners into another dimension. Were there challenges with Galaxy? There are always challenges with any project

- you are dealing with such a high-pressured environment, but if you have an extraordinary team as we did, challenges are always met with solutions. Our main challenge was working through a pandemic, traveling when restrictions were on and trying to get suppliers to deliver on time during Brexit, but we got through all of this, and she is truly a marvel of design - she is a new yacht with an even bigger energy. You collaborated with some amazingly talented people on Galaxy – Dylan Cole creating a once-in-a-lifetime wall covering and two sculptures by Joseph Kibansky. Leafing through your Superyacht ‘little black book’, how do you decide who to partner with on a specific project? We are so lucky in Njord that we meet and know such remarkable people along our journey of design. We work alongside the world’s best art galleries, artists, craftsmen, and artisans and when we truly push the boundaries with our design, this is when we contact specific people to collaborate with us. We are very con-

nected and in the know with people, we always like to find something new and exciting for our clients. My business partner Albin contacted Dylan Cole through Instagram; we won him over with his first-ever design like this for a yacht. Our client has an exclusive piece of artwork now throughout his main saloon onboard Galaxy, it’s a true out-of-world commissioned avatar theme not to be found anywhere else. Galaxy sounds like the most astounding undertaking - you are trusted by the owners to bring their vision to fruition. That must be such an astonishing feeling to bring to life what is essentially a home for your client(s). How do you navigate the demands of this high-pressure environment (hopefully there’s a fun aspect too)? Trust is everything, in design, in relationships, you build this by excelling in your execution in what you do. We are extremely well known for getting to know our clients so well that when it comes to the design, we nail it every time. This builds the trust that we can be able to get

44 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2022

the job done and of course, sometimes we are lucky enough to become close friends with our clients and the yachts become our family. Fun is always on the agenda, what comes from that is genuine hard work and beautifully designed yachts. You are tall, blond, gorgeous and look like a supermodel! How have you adapted to working in a mainly male dominated world, garnering respect from a testosterone-driven industry? That’s so kind of you, I honestly don’t think I look like a supermodel, but I’ll take that at 40. Since a young girl, I have always had a confidence working in mostly male dominated industries. I’ve actually always thrived on it and enjoyed it. I work really well alongside some significant male mentors. Yes, in yachting the majority is absolutely male dominated, but women are coming through as captains, senior crew, now more than ever, then crew themselves - I see more and more female deckhands, chief officers, and engineers. I get an absolute kick when I’m sitting on a panel next to some

PROFILE

older peers whom I can tell aren’t very comfortable with strong women in our industry – we’re here to stay! Your designs are sustainable and natural fabrics are used. Is that difficult to source? Every minute of every day is spent sourcing and finding the best sustainable materials and traceable suppliers in the world. It’s getting more accessible each day. It’s staggering how beautiful a bamboo or seaweed-made fabric can feel today and far more luxurious than ever before; engineered wood off-cuts make the most incredible flooring and even the smallest of changes in the more eco-friendly materials make such a difference. At Njord this isn’t a marketing ploy to us, we are so passionate about this, we have a responsibility for our clients, the yachts and the environment to make this happen. You are a working mom with two young children aged 5 and 3. How do you balance life as a mother and businesswoman? Gosh the question I’m always asked, how do you do it all? I feel that I have the luckiest life in my own little bubble of a world. I have the most fantastic support system, starting with my

husband Liam, who is the rock who holds it all together. We are far from a normal family setup; we have big dreams and huge goals, but we are a team. Sofia has just turned 5 years old, my sassy princess with a spirit of love for nature and the earth; our son Cassius is 3 and he is a force to be reckoned with. Juggling for most working parents is hard, but we absolutely love it; the children get to have the best lifestyle here in Cheshire in the countryside, even with all my travel commitments we always find the most precious time to spend as a family and any given opportunity we travel together. There is nothing better than being a working mother and having the flexibility to also be a great mother and a great businesswoman. A catchphrase that best describes you. “You can have everything you want in life when you put your heart and soul into everything you do.” Exciting projects on the horizon? We are blessed to currently be working with some very exciting projects and superb clients, as well as collaborating with some true innovators of the yachting industry. Additionally, we are designing some very special masterpieces, in refit and new build and conversions which is also very inspiring. Parting thoughts? I hope to inspire people with this feature, collaborate with Njord by Bergman, even get in touch. We love meeting new people and talking all things design and yachting.

Angelus Gold Flying Tou | BY SOMNATH CHATTERJEE

T

he newest Angelus timepieces are a mixture of its past along with a highly complex design being layered with a modern outlook. It is a brand which has been brought back from the history books but has also been given a radical overhaul with its new positioning. Angeus now makes low volume exotic timepieces with an eccentric look. Its latest collection mirrors that philosophy with the Gold & Carbon Flying Tourbillon being dripping with exceptional craftsmanship. The red gold crown with wide notches has a rubber insert for better grip and has a symmetrical guard projecting from the lugs. The crenelated bezel has the Angelus’ signature slight angular lines. Elsewhere, the A-250skeletonized flying tourbillon caliber gets surrounded by an ultra-rigid and ultralight carbon composite container. It is held within an 18K 5N red gold case middle, which reveals another kind of skeletonization and serves as an open worked vehicle for an open worked movement. A black ballistic-style rubber strap with an interchangeable system and a red gold/titanium folding clasp brings in an interesting contrast. The A-250 caliber is made from woven carbon composite and again contrasts with the 18K red gold bridges. While the Gold & Carbon Flying Tourbillon has no dial, it does have a ‘flange’ being finished with a matte black PVD treatment. Being a flying tourbillon, it is only fixed in place from below and it is situated at 6 o’clock, next to a bridge that does not hold it in place as instead supports the first wheel. The workings are housed within a sapphire crystal glass box which is transparent and is angled vertically where it touches the bezel. The watch indeed sits at a unique place in the market with being a flying tourbillon at one hand and also being a sports watch with its rubber strap indicating a function led aesthetic appeal too. For a watch of this kind, its price-tag of CHF68,900 is also good value while being limited to 18 pieces.

MIDCENTURY HOUSE REMODELED IN BEVERLY HILLS | BY ALINA ROSA LEYVA

L

os Angeles has a wealth of homes associated with the mid-century modernist movement. This particular residence, initially designed by Wusthoff and Gallian in a prime area of Beverly Hills, is another example. Over the years, it had fallen in disrepair and had suffered some unfortunate transformations. The dialogue with the existing conditions formed the starting point for the design. The renovation tried to carefully restore some of the features and materials that were found, either still existing or shown in old photographs. An abandoned pond at the entry was restored, and the original 2-meter wood door with high transom was replaced by a 5.5-meter tall pivoting glass door. The terrazzo floor on the ground floor that leads from the entrance through the entire length of the house to a patio in the back was carefully restored. The patio remained, but was used to create direct access from the garage into the residence. Another pivoting entry glass door was installed to allow for direct access from the garage through the small patio. The kitchen and dining area were opened up and expanded into one continuous space along the main axis of the residence. A larger terrace in front of this main space ensured indoor-outdoor living and dining, an essential feature of Southern California Architecture of that period. This terrace and the garden are facing the newly created infinity-edge pool. For the Master Suite, the bathroom and closet were reconfigured and the original balcony was recreated, however this time with a glass railing to take full advantage of the views and palm trees on the property.

The spaces, in general, are intimate yet open, engage with shades of natural light, change throughout the day, and are activated by the emotive and sensorial qualities of the carefully curated materials. The terrazzo, the tile, the wood, and the fluted glass express the original character of this residence. Finally, the mid-century spirit was also the principle guiding the property's landscape design. 50 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2022

THAMO TELELE MAUN, BOTSWANA

Previously known as Royal Tree Lodge, Thamo Telele is Natural Selection’s first Maun property, the gateway for travel into the Okavango Delta. This intimate lodge was refurbished and opened its tent-flaps again in March 2022, boasting nine luxury safari-style tents and two thatched honeymoon chalets set in a 250-hectare private game reserve amongst old growth leadwood and acacia trees. Each of the nine luxury guest tent suites are raised on wooden platforms with ensuite bathrooms and outdoor showers, finished with twin beds surrounded by light and bright colors. The honeymoon chalets are a much more private and intimate, boasting superior king size canopy beds covered in white linen, en-suite bathroom with a large bath, and pops of bright color.

The ideal stop-over either side of the safari, Thamo Telele’s landscape invites abundant bird life and resident herd of 20 giraffe, where the name Thamo Telele was named after the smallest giraffe of the herd, meaning “long neck” in Setswana. With over 300 species of birds sighting in and around the reserve, birders should see at least 50-70 species per day while on nature walks and relaxing in the overflow of plant life. Located at the Southern-eastern edge of the Okavango Delta, the meandering waters of the Thamalakane River maneuver their way through the frontier town of Maun, the gateway to northern Botswana and the last stop before the Okavango Delta. A life source to this buzzing little safari town, as the river ebbs

and flows throughout the year to the beat of its own drum, its banks overflow with an abundance of bird, plant life and wildlife to bring a renewed energy to the area and water relief to the Maun locals. Jerry and Jana Lackey are the stewards of Thamo Telele Private Reserve. They came to Botswana in 1986 to pursue their calling and founded the Love Botswana Outreach Mission. This organization has grown tremendously in scope and reach, launching over 30 life-changing programs, creating jobs and sustainable programs designed to better lives in the community and the Ngamiland and Okavango districts of Botswana, becoming one of the largest non-profits in the country.

W DUBAI - MINA SEYAHI DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

BLINK Design Group has created a stunning modern bohemian vision inspired by traditional Dhow boats, the romance of travel and the ancient Arabic storytelling tradition of Al-Halqa for the new W Dubai – Mina Seyahi. The global interior design visionaries and high priests of placemaking were summoned to push the boat out and set tongues wagging for the UAE’s latest W Hotel, located in the heart of Al Mina Al Seyahi, the legendary ‘Port of Travelers’ district of Jumeirah Beach, home to the glittering Dubai International Marine Club and its 300-berth marina. The Mina Seyahi port dates back to ancient times when the area was a thriving hub of the copper trade, and the Al-Halqa storytellers would weave their yarns to circles of spellbound travelers. The graceful swooping shape of the

traditional Dhow boats that once thronged the harbor along with the stories and intrigue of the trading enclave became the inspiration for BLINK’s latest interior design tour de force. BLINK’s canvas is a hotel ranging over 31 floors, with 291 guest rooms and 27 opulent suites; a spectacular marina-front lobby, a pool area and lavish spa, four state of the art meeting rooms and a selection of the most cutting-edge dining concepts in Dubai. The result is an utterly unique creation, entirely of its place, colorful, eclectic with a touch of retro. Founder and creative partner of BLINK Clint Nagata explains: “Dubai transformed quickly from an ancient outpost into an ultra-modern cosmopolitan city and one of the most famous travel destinations, for business or leisure.

Despite this rapid modernization, the thread of history is kept alive down the generations through the traditions of storytelling, one of the most sublime and respected art forms that runs through Arabian culture. The ‘Port of Travelers’ was the overarching inspiration for the guest rooms and suites, with the concept translating into the spaces. The accommodations are laden with lavish touches and hints of intrigue, adventure and romance. “There’s a treasure chest as a bedside table, with little treasures to surprise and delight guests. The wow extends to the walk-in closets, closed with billowing curtains in a gradient of sunset colors, echoing the hues of the bay, with a play on the secrets behind the veil,” Mr. Nagata concludes.

“The most decadent aspect of a Lana’i Four Seasons stay is the effortless travel”

One of Hawaii’s smallest islands, Lana'i packs a powerful hospitality punch in the form of two luxurious Four Seasons resorts that honor the legacy of the isle. Exceedingly authentic, Lana’is cultural heritage resonates within both Sensei Lana’i, a Four Seasons Resort, and the beachfront Four Seasons Resort Lana’i, both of which provide a Hawaiian experience that is genuine, restful, and restorative. SENSEI LANA’I, A FOUR SEASONS RESORT Located in Lana’i ‘up country’ at 1,600 feet above sea level, where temperatures are routinely a refreshing 10 degrees cooler than those beachfront, Sensei

63 | UPSCALELIVINGMAG.COM | SUMMER 2022

HOTEL

Lana’i features a boutique-like 96 rooms within its light-filled, two-story, plantation-style structure. A recent and extensive remodel transformed the former The Lodge at Koele into an inspirational wellness enclave, the founders of which envisioned a retreat so captivating and enchanting as to innately initiate positive change in its guests. At Sensei Lana’i, the sound of birdsong fills the fragrant air. Significant artworks are speckled throughout the lush landscape, such as monumental, mountainside-placed “Talaia” by Spanish sculpture Jaume Plensa. A Zen-like vibe permeates the 24-acre property, within which are walking paths that meander through colorful gardens and groves that ring a central, koi-filled lake. A waterfall cascades beside and between ten private hot tubs hidden amongst the verdant flora. The resort’s goal for guest wellbeing is demonstrated not only in its inherent beauty and luxe facilities that include a 24-hour fitness room, two movement studios, and a calming yoga pavilion, but also in its ‘Sensei Way’ programming that inspires and kick-starts healthy habits. Based on a three path focus of move, nourish, and rest, the Sensei Way helps guests to familiarize and maintain a healthy relationship with body and mind. Through varied, curated experiences and classes with the resort’s health experts who can collect baseline health markers such as blood pressure, body composition, hydration and a functional-movement screen, guests gather and absorb tips to address particular intentions. But those who chose the a la carte option will also find themselves transformed by the surroundings, the delicious and healthy food offered at resort restaurant Nobu, and the chance to unplug. The ten Onsen Garden hot tubs, from which the night sky shines most brightly, certainly help, as do the ten Spa Hales in which a variety of pampering treatments are offered. Each is 1,000 square feet of pure indulgence featuring individual gardens, Japanese Ofuro soaking tubs, outdoor rain showers, infrared saunas, hot and cold pools, and steam showers. FOUR SEASONS RESORT LANA’I Perched on a hillside overlooking Hulopo‘e Bay, Four Seasons Resort Lana’i is the island’s stellar and sumptuous beachfront resort, where chaise lounges are perfectly positioned to catch the playful splashing of Spinner dolphins.

With lush gardens and flowing koi ponds that connect the resort’s staggered buildings, this is a property that begs for exploration. And those who venture beyond the pool and beach will find unexpected seating areas featuring glorious panoramas. The elegance of the resort’s common spaces are echoed in each of the 213 rooms and suites. For the ultimate in comfort and stunning panorama views, the Ohana Ocean Front Suite features open design, neutral colors and rich hardwoods. A separate living room and bedroom are enhanced by two full bathrooms, including a Japanese wooden soaking tub in the master bath. The two-bedroom Ali’i Royal Suite presents spectacular panoramas of the Pacific and Hulopo’e Bay and features a formal living room, media room, and separate dining room. But even a garden room astounds with furnishings of rosewood, leather, iron, and linen, and artisan bathrooms with deep soaking bathtubs. Perfect for a romantic getaway, the resort is equally appealing to families. Two lagoon-style, free-form pools include the adults-only Retreat pool and the Family pool. At each, attendants offer treats such as agave lemonade, frozen pineapple, fruit or coffee smoothies, and water coolers. A choice of restaurants provides options. Nobu Lana’i offers sweeping panoramic views and innovative Japanese cuisine drawn upon Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s classical, sushi chef training. ONE FORTY offers breakfast and dinner with an extensive American steak and Hawaiian seafood menu. The open-air The Break, with its large sports-tuned televisions, pool table, and shuffleboard tables is a lively spot. And Malibu Farm features the freshest local and organic ingredients for delicious lunch offerings and refreshing island cocktails. Views, located at the golf course, is ideal for lunch or afternoon refreshments. From 10am to 4:30pm daily, cultural advisors man a lobby table inviting guests to partake in lei making or weaving. Yoga, sailing, scuba, deep sea fishing, helicopter tours, tennis, horseback riding and more are readily available. The resort’s beach kiosk at Hulopo‘e Bay offers complimentary snorkeling equipment. High above the crashing surf is the premiere Jack Nicklaus Signature Manele Golf Course. Built on lava outcroppings, the course features three dazzling cliff holes. And a new observatory allows guests to survey the stars, providing

celestial views as seen and utilized by ancient explorers and navigators. Whether a guest at Sensei or the beach resort, it’s worthwhile to book a Holoholo tour for a true understanding of the island. A Love Lana’i cultural practitioner provides a guided, four-wheel drive exploration of remote portions of the island, sharing cultural details along the way. Finally, one of the most decadent aspects of a Lana’i Four Seasons stay is the effortless travel; Concierge transfers are available from Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport to Lana’i via luxurious charter air service Lana’iAir (a 25 minute flight). Four Seasons staff members greet guests upon arrival in Honolulu and provide escort to the Lana’i Air tarmac via luxury SUV. Upon arrival in Lana’i, a staff driven Tesla awaits for the short drive to either resort. It’s the perfect start to a perfect getaway.

Deborah Calmeyer | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS

A

s the CEO and founder of ROAR AFRICA, Deborah Calmeyer’s hazel eyes glisten when speaking of the African continent, showing both passion and emotion. Chatting via Zoom from her offices in New York, she tells Upscale Living magazine why traveling should form a cornerstone of one’s life. Deborah, tell us a bit about yourself. I was born in Zimbabwe and that’s very much who I am at heart. I feel Zimbabwean – I feel very connected when I go there. When I’m there, I can smell the soil, I can smell the air and I can feel ‘wow – this is part of me, this is who I am’. I don’t think that ever leaves you. What are the fondest memories of your formative years? I lived in Zimbabwe until I was 15 and can look at my life through two lenses – the traumatic experience of being exposed to a bush war at the age of 5; we had sandbags all around the house, bulletproof tape on the windows, and we weren’t allowed out after 6pm and before 6am and there were armed tanks circling the farm. My dad slept with a rifle next to him. It was a frightening time in my young life, but I loved being on the farm, and really enjoyed horse riding. When the war ended, my dad opted to forego all the alarms and fences and get a lion as a pet. We were four children under

the age of 12, and this cub thought she was a Labrador, because she lived in the house with us. She slept at the end of the bed with my dad, drove in the car with us to school and enjoyed her freedom in the garden. Carmel behaved like a typical dog, albeit a strong one. My dad was her everything – he would call her, and she would run towards him, put her paws on his 6’3 frame and just adore him. That is probably where my love for wildlife came from. I got to witness so much similarity between ourselves and animals, and see Carmel’s affection and love. As a young girl aged nine, you were trapped in a swimming pool when a young bull elephant came to drink. May I assume that at that moment, the mutual respect for animals you still have today, was formed? I was by myself, and I was absolutely terrified. I knew I couldn’t run, it was too late for that, and all I could do was stay still. The big bull elephant came over, he drunk and the non-verbal ‘I won’t hurt, you, I’m just doing my thing, you do yours’. It was beautiful and amazing, and I think in our own way, we form connections with animals, whether it’s a dog or a cat. I was incredibly privileged in many ways, because I had two parents who really liked being in the bush. I got to inherit their passion and love for the wild, and it amplified when I left Africa. I didn’t know how intense the love was and how much a part of me it was. When I moved to

66 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2022

New York, it was this desperate longing and ache for Africa that I don’t believe ever leaves anyone that has left Africa. The love is there, it’s ingrained in us. You were born in Zimbabwe and have a deep love for the country and the people. Apart from the obvious attractions like Victoria Falls and the incredible landscape, what gets you going every time you visit? The warmth of the people, hands down. The landscape speaks to me, it’s part of my makeup, the rich red soils of Zimbabwe and the msasa trees. The saying ‘home is where the heart is’ definitely rings true. You alternate your time between NYC and Cape Town. NYC is vastly different to Cape Town; it has a bustling urban jungle energy and truly is the ‘city that never sleeps’. Cape Town has just been ranked the third greatest city on earth by the UK’s Telegraph and it’s easy to see why – beautiful coastlines and incredible wineries to name but a few aspects. How do you adapt to each place and what makes it home in your books? I’m fortunate to have homes in two such incredible cities. When I arrive in Cape Town, I try to have at least three days to myself so that I can decompress, try to not talk too fast or move too fast. New York is so different – you

compete for space on the subway, your coffee at Starbucks, even your space of the pavement. It vibrates at such a high frequency. As a woman building a business, it’s really been empowering and exciting, something I never imagined, fueled by a deep passion and love for Africa. I’m delighted to come back to Africa wherever I’m going. When I’m in Cape Town and I open the doors and I look at the Atlantic Ocean in front of me, I can breathe. I love being in the outdoors, and there’s an energy in Cape Town that I’ve never experienced anywhere in the world, and I’ve traveled extensively for the last 22 years. Cape Town holds you in a way that I’ve never felt anywhere. It is the best city in the world! It’s so beautiful and amazing. It feeds my eyes, it feeds my soul. Why the name ROAR AFRICA? My husband and I were bouncing names around and this one just stuck. How has your self-confessed inquisitive nature helped you in your business? So much of my South African and Zimbabwean makeup is entrepreneurial. Whatever is happening, you have to make a plan and it’s ingrained in us as youngsters in Africa. ROAR AFRICA is mostly female which is very different from your typical safari company. There is a depth, a sensitivity, a real emotional intelligence that is present and our travelers are subject to this. This is potentially transformational both for Africa and for the people who travel here. Our mission statement is “If African women rise, wildlife will thrive.” This is threaded into every trip we do. I believe tourism is in our DNA as women. We are caregivers – we’re mothers, we’re sisters, we’re teachers. Hence there should be many more women in Africa working in this space, and not just at low level positions but leading ones. It’s clear that you absolutely adore Africa. I know it’s like asking a parent who their favorite child is. But is there a favorite and why? There are two. There’s Zimbabwe because it’s my home and reconnecting with everything that’s part of me. Botswana and the landscape; it shifts my soul, and it paints me with some type of soothing balm when I fly over the Okavango Delta. The beauty of the wilderness and nature. And the sunrises. It knocks you right out.

Africa really changes people, in a good way. Which life-changing moments have you experienced? When I visited Botswana in April this year, I was grieving the loss of a family member and was full of grief and pain. Waking up to the painted landscape of the Okavango Delta was a prescription for the pain. Nature and her beauty almost seemed to paint away the pain. The pandemic did not deter you from launching The Greatest Safari on Earth in 2021. I guess there were a number of stumbling blocks - navigating PCR tests and convincing people to travel during this uncertain time. What do you think made it such a ROAR-ing (pardon the pun) success? There were so many stumbling blocks and there was so much fear. It was terrifying! I launched it in 2019 and it sold out immediately. Then it got cancelled and I had to refund everybody and try to resell it. I had to manage my own fear, as well as the clients’ fear. Guests were really nervous about the PCR tests - we had 8 PCR tests in 12 days! I work with an incredible team, and they kept everyone vibrant, happy and joyful, they kept the movement and the flow, kept everyone safe. My team had done the logistical brain surgery and cleared the way so we could float through on our magic Emirates carpet. What I was not expecting was the wonderful welcoming response from everyone on the ground that touched the trip. They saw this as the Olympic torch of tourism. The Greatest Safari on Earth for 2022 has been sold out – congratulations! You had to add another one in August this year. With the popularity of it, will it become a regular trip on the itinerary for ROAR AFRICA? Yes, what an absolute blessing! Guests can look forward to a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Zimbabwe, Botswana, Kenya and Rwanda on The Greatest Safari On Earth every year. You managed to get Emirates on board to partner with ROAR AFRICA to design a private jet safari for The Greatest Safari on Earth. Without giving your secrets away, what is behind the creation of something that has quite a hefty price tag ($125,000), but in the end has all the trappings of an ultra-luxurious safari. How do you go about choosing which suppliers to collaborate with?

68 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2022

Emirates is a known and trusted brand, and the conversion of an A319 aircraft ensured a private jet experience - only ten suites that are double the size of a first class cabin, a lounge, a dining area and two beautiful bathrooms. In terms of accommodation, we partner with the very best lodges in each location for the top hospitality experiences. There simply is no better than Matetsi in Victoria Falls, Xigera in Botswana, Angama Mara in Kenya, and Singita in Rwanda. You believe that being in the wild is a prescription for one’s soul. Yes, I do. I certainly do not know of any other place that speaks to one the way being in the wild does. Beauty takes us to a higher place, we become our best selves. This is what the world needs – now more than ever. Adding to that, people travel not just to move around, but to be moved. Stillness is a resource and when we can’t be still, we’re running from something, mostly from ourselves. If you can create an environment when someone’s traveling so that they can slow down, absorb, enjoy, and feel, they might find themselves. Why should people travel to Africa when given the opportunity to do so? Because it will move them in a way they have never been moved. It will change things on a psychological and physiological basis. They will see the world differently. You always look super stylish when going on safari. How can people dress safari chic without wearing top-to-bottom khaki? So easily. Wear the clothes that you’re comfortable in. Mix it up with scarves, sunglasses and a hat. Paint yourself the way you want to. Parting thoughts? If you can go to Africa, go! You only have one wild and precious life. | www.roarafrica.com

She has since grown the company to 50 matchmakers and dating coaches across the United States as well as internationally in London, Vancouver and Toronto. The company is now run by Jill’s daughter Amber who has successfully built upon her mom’s groundwork to grow the company into one of the largest, privately owned matchmaking companies in the country. Focusing on ultra-high-net-worth individuals,

Kelleher International has put the business of love on the map and are poised to take it to a whole new level. “Kelleher International has been refining our approach and process for over 35 years.” said Jill Kelleher. “We are the preeminent global leader in upscale matchmaking services and we pretty much wrote the book in this space. walks of life, her clients go through a thorough vetting process (financials, education, dating history, family background and more) before their best-in-class matchmakers help to find their clients their forever someone. For Kelleher International it isn’t about the membership prices (more about that later) it is about finding the right clients that fit the values of the company. Their core philosophy is designed around connecting people on a purpose based on the pillars of gaining a deep understanding of their members and making sure they are a good fit for each other. They are extremely picky, resulting in an extremely low percentage of applicants being accepted as clients. Based on the individual client’s needs, memberships can cost up to $300,000 and follows a three-step process. Candidates apply through their online form or over the phone where they are introduced to a membership package custom tailored to their needs. Once agreeing on the terms of the membership (which ranges from length of services, prices, locations of the search and more), the approved candidate then meets his/her matchmaking team and they review hand-selected matches in person. Kelleher’s team will then get feedback on the match and hone in on what you are looking for in a partner. This iterative process ensures there is always learning during the journey and adjustment of strategy when needed. Throughout their membership, Kelleher’s team is there every step of the way helping to refine, coach and partner with their members so that everyone is comfortable with the choices being made along the way. This process is personally curated for each member and is based on who they are and who they are searching for, ensuring long-lasting connections are made resulting in the highest success rate in the industry.

Their partnership with Virgin Unite has led to eight trips since 2013 and the sky is only the limit for future collaborations and events. Amber has successfully created an unstoppable network of distinguished global clientele, who are seeking upscale discreet matchmaking. But she is cognizant that dating and love is a living organism and that she needs to continue to raise the bar to remain the leading global matchmaker.

ESPERANZA Auberge Resorts Collection | BY TRACY ELLEN BEARD

Esperanza, Auberge Resorts Collection rests perched above Cabo’s Punta Ballena’s stunning coastline and boasts one of the most resplendent alfresco dining spots in Baja, California. This five-star resort features upscale casitas and suites, haciendas, villas, and oceanfront villas for individuals, couples and large groups. The food is spectacular, the accommodations are opulent and the activities are phenomenal. A WARM WELCOME My daughter Brittney and I arrived at Esperanza on a warm, muggy day. After exiting our private, airconditioned car we were greeted with cold passion fruit margaritas, given a short tour of the resort and escorted to the open-air Cocina del Mar restaurant for lunch. Our cold, crispy crudité was paired with a jocoque (a Mexican dairy product) dip made with mint jocoque cheese, jalapeño, toasted lemon seeds and olive oil. We also shared a beef tenderloin steak sandwich with caramelized onions, tomato, arugula, mustard and mayo. Lunch was tasty and we felt satisfied and refreshed from the breezy air. THE LUXURIOUS CASITA After lunch we were taken to our stunning, well-appointed casita featuring a terrace that overlooked the Sea of Cortez. The bedroom had a lovely sitting area in front of expansive sliding glass doors that led onto the balcony complete with a hot tub. The large bathroom boasted two rain showers, an enormous tub and double sinks. On one side of the room a beautiful cabinet held a Nespresso machine, hot water

maker and various alcohols and snacks. The king bed, adorned with a white duvet, was enveloped with flowing white linens draped from rods hung from the ceiling. Muted shades of green were used to offset the crisp whites in the room creating an elegant style, and iron sconces added an opulent yet authentic Mexican feel. While looking around, we discovered a splendid edible cactus display on the buffet table under the TV; and we were thrilled to learn that a new edible piece of art would be left for us to enjoy each evening. AN ENCHANTING DINING EXPERIENCE Lunch and breakfast at Cocina del Mar are wonderful, but dinner is a grand performance. Sitting on the furthest platform stretched out toward the sea, we began the evening with a delicious Del-margarita made with lemon, grapefruit 1800 anejo tequila, Grand Marnier and volcanic salt. Sourdough bread cooked in a cup, resembling a popover, was served and accompanied by a tasty, sweet eggplant butter. Our first course was Torre de Mariscos—an assortment of raw gifts from the sea. The platter included Kumiai oysters, chocolate clams, poached blue shrimp, octopus, local baby scallops with pineapple and jicama, hamachi with ponzu sauce, black lime paste, salsa chiles secos sauce and passion fruit mignonette for the oysters. Everything was fresh and tasted vaguely of the sea, and the presentation was dramatic. Thinly sliced bluefin tuna crudo arrived with sliced avocado, salsa macha XO, cilantro and

78 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2022

wakame. This flavorful sauce with a paste consistency was exquisite on the delicate tuna. The entree, fresh sea bass, was prepared in a traditional smoked chili marinade. Mexican rice, charro beans, shredded cabbage, guacamole, house-made tortillas, tomatillo salsa and very spicy and smokey tormenta salsa made with habanero peppers came with the sea bass—everything needed to prepare perfect individual tacos. The chef prepared two desserts, an amaretto coffee souffle with crème anglaise and vanilla ice cream and a double chocolate mousse served in a chocolate bowl with mini malted chocolate balls topped with gold leaf. Yummy! EXCITING RESORT ACTIVITIES The Creative Art Class - We attended a pottery class at the Agave Art Studio. Two gentlemen sat with us in the studio to give brief instructions, and then we were on our own. Brittney used a mold to make a dolphin, and I made a turtle. We each painted a few small bowls and a coffee mug. Once finished, we left the items to be fired and picked up the following day. It was a fun way to spend a few hours in the afternoon. TIME WITH CHEF PALACIOS My favorite activity was our private event with the resort’s Executive Chef Alexis Palacios. He took us down to the beach to learn about the different marine life in the local tide pools. We found crabs, snails and small fish. Chef told us that sometimes he finds octopus and larger fish.

After poking around for a while, we returned to the restaurant where we found a gorgeous spread of beautifully ripe fruits and vegetables awaiting us. Chocolate clams, blue shrimp and fresh tuna were also ready for preparation. The staff handed us aprons, and we stood at stations across from the chef and began our cooking class.

make mojitos with a twist since we had already been imbibing on the tequila beverage during our culinary lesson. He taught us the basics of making mojitos, then I added mango syrup and Brittney added Frangelico to hers. Both cocktails were picturesque and refreshing.

Chef Palacios showed us how to cure raw onion in lemon juice and water. This technique removes some of the onion’s acidity and crunch. We added serrano chili to bump up the flavor. It worked great. We made a tasty and unique guacamole with avocado, cucumber with no seeds, lemon juice, chopped tomatillo, olive oil, salt and pepper. It was incredibly delicious.

Las Estrellas restaurant is located near the residences and in the garden area. Tables sit on the grass next to a small vineyard, fruit trees and an herb garden. Additional seating is available on the patio with pretty wicker lanterns. The cuisine at Las Estrellas has an Italian flare. We began dinner with the baked burrata with an heirloom tomato mix, and a roasted pumpkin fondue. Onion focaccia and flatbread with rosemary accompanied the dips. Delicious.

We also made a fruity pico de gallo with the cured onion, serrano chili, especially ripe cherry tomatoes, chunks of fresh mango and pineapple, olive oil and fresh cilantro. We ate the guacamole and fruity pico with fresh large basil leaves and tortilla chips. Lastly we prepared a mignonette for the raw oysters and a black lemon paste for the tuna and shrimp. It was a fantastic and fun learning experience with the chef. MIXOLOGY CLASS Our mixology instructor, Christian, waited for us after our cooking class. He planned to teach us to make margaritas, but we opted to

DINNER IN THE GARDEN

The final course was a massive wedge of meat lasagna and a bowl of saffron and shrimp fettuccine. The pasta was handmade and cooked al dente. For dessert we dined on crème brûlée with berries and a zucchini cake cooked in a mini cast iron skillet topped with a nutmeg ice cream. INDULGENT SPA TREATMENTS The Spa at Esperanza brings the flourishing desert into its indoor and outdoor spaces. Upon entering, we received our assigned lockers, changed into our robes and relaxed in the

outdoor waiting area. The space was a tropical jungle with stone walls, a stone shower and two Jacuzzis, one cold and one hot. Brittney and I put our feet in the cold pool and waited for our masseuses. Soon we were collected, and we entered the spa through its weather-beaten wooden gates to experience paradise. We went our separate ways, and Connie, my masseuse, walked me through the beautiful flower-filled jungle to a therapy room. It had an outdoor section, a Jacuzzi and shower, and inside was an extra-large room with a bathroom. Connie was well trained in her craft. She used long, broad strokes with deep pressure getting down into the secondary layers under the facia without causing pain from pinpoint pressure. It was wonderful. She also used several stretching techniques to manipulate my appendages to get deeper into spots that hold tension. It was extremely relaxing, and she eliminated the knots in my muscles. After finishing our massages, we met outside under the palapa shaded lounges where we sipped on our choice of local fresh fruit beverages. Treat yourself and your loved ones to an unforgettable trip to the Esperanza, Auberge Resorts Collection. Savor the marvelous cuisine, relax in upscale accommodations and pamper yourself at the spa.

GARZA BLANCA RESORT & SPA LOS CABOS | BY TRACY ELLEN BEARD

Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Los Cabos is located between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo in Mexico. This luxurious, resort boasts an eclectic array of expansive suites and residences, decadent cuisine, numerous activities, eight exclusive swimming pools, special spa indulgences and a hydrotherapy circuit. THE EXPANSIVE OCEAN SUITE My daughter Brittney joined me on a trip to the Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Los Cabos. We entered our spacious one-bedroom ocean suite to discover two full bathrooms, a kitchenette with a large refrigerator, a stovetop and a sizeable living room with a pullout couch. The king bed was plush with a cushy duvet and a wide assortment of six pillows. The en suite bathroom boasted an enormous closet, numerous shelves, a kidney-shaped soaking tub and a double sink. The gigantic shower area featured a rain showerhead and a hand-held sprayer, and the Japanese-style toilet sprayed water and included a dryer and warmer and cleaned itself. The view from our balcony was stunning. It overlooked the various pools and then spread over the teal blue sea. THE DELECTABLE CUISINE Garza Blanca is an all-inclusive resort with delicious food and tasty drinks. The options are considerable, varied and eclectic. Brittney and I savored our first bites near the pool. Our server Jorge was exceptional; he was pleasant and attentive. We ordered guacamole and chips and an octopus tostada with tiger’s milk, creamy avocado, cucumber, mango and serrano chili from the beach restaurant. The octopus was tender, the combination of flavors was spectacular, and the vegetables were colorful and artistically arranged. We also ordered the Baja-style fish tacos with beer battered fish, chipotle mayonnaise, coleslaw, guacamole, pico de gallo and a shaved radish with lime. Everything was excellent. We dined at the resort’s Japanese restaurant Hiroshi for dinner and sat outside in the warm air to enjoy the light sea breeze. The service was superb. Our waiter offered exceptional suggestions. I started with the

86 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2022

Sunset cocktail made with gin, passion fruit, mango and white wine. It was sweet, fruity and ice cold, perfect for a balmy night. We ordered the suggested crunchy taco with marinated spicy tuna and avocado cream— it was perfectly seasoned fresh tuna with a crispy wonton taco shell and an avocado mousse. As the evening progressed, staff lit torches along the railing bordering the restaurant. The flames from the torches rose high into the sky, and the backdrop of palm trees that swayed in the breeze created a mesmerizing setting. We listened to the waves roll in and crash on the beach and watched the sand glitter in the moonlight. We finished dinner with a shared piece of coconut cake. It consisted of a thin layer of coconut cake, topped with a coconut mousse and finished with a coconut glaze and flaked sweet coconut on the sides. Blueberries, strawberries and a gelled apricot jam accompanied this flavorful yet not overly sweet dessert. Another fabulous suggestion was the carajilli espresso, a popular Spanish coffee drink. It was made with a shot of decaf espresso (per my request) and an orange liquor mixed with more than 43 unknown spices. Shaken together, it created a foam on top, and was served over ice with a couple of espresso beans for garnish. The carajilli was magical with the cake and a magnificent way to complete the meal. THE SPECIAL EVENTS It is always fun to participate in activities or events held at resorts. One morning we attended a yoga class under the resort’s signature orange tree. Orange colored trees are found at all Garza Blanca Resorts. According to the resort’s credo, “To spot one means your focus shall shine through. We, in turn, are focused on your peace, happiness, and success; and through your visit, we all become more successful and energized as a result.” In the afternoon we went to a tequila tasting/cooking class at 3:00 p.m. where we met Chef Marco and Miguel. A lovely couple from Boston joined us, and we sampled two 100% blue agave tequilas, one blanco and one reposado. We learned how to make a delicious and attractive tuna ceviche during our class.

Suite butlers can make arrangements for various unique experiences, including mixology classes, beer and wine tastings, tequila tastings, breakfast buffets and dinners served on the beach or in the privacy of a suite. One evening Brittney and I had dinner on the beach. The setting was picturesque. Staff smoothed out the sand to make a patio-type setting, set up poles and strung up little lights. We began the night with bubbles. I had a green salad, and Brittney had a beet salad. The next course was a beef skewer with zucchini and tomato followed by shrimp bisque. The evening ensued with short ribs, chicken and a cake topped with Bananas Foster and ice cream and then ended with a glorious sunset. We decided to sit at the bar near Blanca Blue before dinner on our final night. We ordered

the pork belly tacos recommended by Victor Sanchez, the food and beverage manager. The tacos were moist and delicious with a little spicy avocado mousse on crispy blue corn tortillas. We were especially delighted when a lovely flutist meandered through the bar and continued playing throughout the evening. Her music added to the room’s beauty and made the evening’s experience more opulent. THE ROOFTOP POOL There are numerous places to wile away the hours gazing at the beguiling views of the Sea of Cortez. One of my favorites is from the rooftop pool and bar. Brittney and I spent a fabulous afternoon sipping cocktails and sharing stories with several ladies visiting from California.

THE SPA Spa Imagine highlights stunning ocean views from the ninth floor. Brittney and I thoroughly enjoyed our morning at the spa. I followed my first few minutes in the sauna, with the plunging shower, the foot bubbling Jacuzzi, and the metal bed with bubbles, ending with the vigorous waterfall that relaxed my shoulders and neck. We both opted for a deep tissue massage after our hydrotherapy circuit. After we changed into our robes, the technician dried our swimsuits while we settled in the lounge room and looked over the Sea of Cortez. Our attendants gently placed cucumber slices over our eyes and a cold, wet washcloth.

HOTEL

Later, we moved to a massage room with two tables. We sat in chairs and put our feet into bowls while they poured warm water over our toes and gave our feet a gentle scrub. They left the room after toweling our feet dry, and we got onto the tables. Araceli and Deisy were very skilled. They knew exactly where to apply pressure and how to pull the stubborn knots out from our sore muscles. After exceptional massages, we returned to the lounge to enjoy mint chlorophyll water and chamomile tea with honey. The tea arrived with delicious shortbread cookies and nuts. The hydrotherapy circuit is one of the most comprehensive in Los Cabos. Personal chaperones always guide clients through timed stays in the vitality pool, cold plunge pool and high-pressure shower. Hydrotherapy is an immersive experience that helps calm the mind and relax muscles, the perfect preparation for a relaxing massage. All specialized treatments at the spa begin with a foot ritual designed to connect guests with the energy of water, encouraging perfect balance mentally, physically and emotionally. Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Los Cabos is a special place for a long weekend, corporate retreat, family reunion or extended vacation. Breakfast Secret to an Amazing

he Pelican Grand Beach Resort believes there is no better way to begin your vacation than with a delicious breakfast featuring an amazing ocean view. Think about it. From your table on Pelican Grand’s sweeping verandah, the resort’s Atlantic Ocean seascape welcomes guests with a playlist of ocean sounds. The rhythmic soundtrack soothes your soul as you sip a first cup of coffee. Your spirits lift as you take in the view and contemplate Pelican Grand’s many amenities and possible activities. As you bask in the morning sun, a Pelican Grand server approaches your table and inquires which breakfast entree sounds good today? You choose eggs benedict and a glass of freshly squeezed Florida orange juice. While gazing out at this picture-perfect setting, you reflect that this is a wonderful way to start your day. FEELS LIKE HOME

Your server mentions that Pelican Grand Beach Resort opened in 2004. Even though this 11-story hotel is less than two decades old, you feel a time-honored sense of South Florida history throughout the property. The hotel recently underwent a $7 million renovation. A key aspect to freshening the hotel’s 188 rooms was acknowledging the Florida charm of days gone by. Guests will note the beach vibe artwork in their suite, along with a pastel Smeg refrigerator. You’ll also see a grand

VANDERKAMP Upstate New York’s Most Secluded Wilderness Retreat | BY JJ ESSEX

ew York. What are the first things that come to mind when you read those words? For some, they might evoke thoughts of Broadway performances and towering skyscrapers, while others might think about bustling city streets and fast-talking business tycoons. Few would associate the ethos of New York with peaceful forests and breathtaking scenery. But far past the crowded streets of Manhattan and beyond the limits of the city there is a state that is rarely shared in popular media, one rich with wildlife and natural wonders. There is of course the beauty of Niagara Falls and the Adirondack Mountains. Those who love to immerse themselves in the oranges

and reds of autumn can visit the picturesque landscapes of the Hudson River Valley. Even die-hard hiking enthusiasts can get their fix traversing the Catskills’ many trails and vistas. New York is home to countless special places to explore. Unfortunately, nearly all of the places I’ve just listed suffer from one major issue— overcrowding. Over the last few years, the closely guarded secret of New York’s hidden beauty has made its way out into the world, and it feels as if every inch of the state is now crawling with inexperienced backcountry tourists who are ruining the serenity of the nature they’ve traveled so far to see. No place seems undisturbed. Well, that’s not entirely true. There are still small pockets

of land where you can roam freely through the woods without encountering another soul. And there is one place in particular that you should consider visiting if you want to escape your daily life and seclude yourself within the natural world, Vanderkamp. Nestled deep within the heart of Oswego County’s towering forests, just four hours from the heart of Manhattan, you’ll find what may be the only nature experience of its kind in North America. That’s because it comes from the minds of a group of entrepreneurs who know a thing or two about building unique experiences. Troy Evans and Joe Sisko are the founders of Syracuse’s wildly popular social living and working project, Commonspace, and

95 | UPSCALELIVINGMAG.COM | SUMMER 2022

HOTEL

along with their newest partner, Dan Cramer, they’re taking the lessons they’ve learned in building one of the country’s most successful socially designed apartments and shared office spaces to transform how we vacation in nature. “When we first started discussing the idea of Vanderkamp we wanted to provide a space where people could escape the busy routines of their daily lives and connect with the natural world around them,” Sisko told Upscale Living Magazine, “but the project soon became a way to foster human connection. We wanted to remove some of the distractions of modern life so that our guests could get lost in the beauty of this place and reconnect with nature, with themselves, and with those they would share their experience with.” Getting lost in the vast beauty of Vanderkamp isn’t difficult. The nature retreat provides an

incredible amount of space for its guests. To put its size into perspective, Vanderkamp offers 850 acres of pristine wilderness anchored around a 50-acre lake. That is seven acres larger than New York City’s Central Park. But where Central Park serves a population of eight million, Vanderkamp serves just twentyfour guests at any one time. Along with its nine miles of hiking trails, it is unlikely that you’ll ever run into any other guests as you explore the grounds throughout your stay. Of course, Vanderkamp isn’t the same sort of luxury you would find waiting for you at The Mark Hotel, it offers something far more valuable — a chance to slow down and spend time with those you most love. The three founders have been hard at work developing a series of intimate experiences for their guests, and they’ve just finished their latest lodge—the

Boathouse. Modern, clean, and surprisingly spacious, the Boathouse sits just at the water’s edge of Lake Vanderkamp and is the perfect spot to begin your restorative reconnection with nature, yourself, and your loved ones. It sleeps four guests, is bathed in an abundance of natural light, and really hints at why Vanderkamp stands out among other nature-based destinations in New York. Vanderkamp recreates that feeling of simplicity that came with living in the analog age. As founder Troy Evans says, “Vanderkamp has a feeling, we all felt it the moment we stepped on the property. Its vast remoteness and old trees create this sense of calmness and wonder. There aren’t many places left like this where you can truly seclude yourself anymore, especially in the Northeast.” When you step foot into the forest you really do sense that connection to nature. It

breaks down the unconscious pull of modern life and the urgency to do things disappears, leaving your mind free to finally be in the moment. “The real joy of the Boathouse or any other experience here,” Dan Cramer explained, “is in listening to the crackling of the flames of a fireplace as you prepare dinner for your loved ones, enjoying the early morning rows with your child

across the misty waters of the lake, or walking with the faint hint dew as you and your partner explore the forest after a fresh rain. Moments like those are what make staying with us so enchanting and memorable—because when you’re in them, you’re nowhere else.” Vanderkamp will also soon feature more novel lodge experiences. Langston Lodge, an exceed

ingly secluded setting designed to sleep two and make for the perfect lover’s getaway, and Wollehben Cabin, Vanderkamp’s first authentic log cabin experience. If you’re looking for the ultimate escape for a large group you should consider Frank Soule Lodge. This recently renovated seven-bedroom lake home sleeps sixteen guests and was the former home of Syracuse naturalist and business magnate Frank C. Soule. But you should reserve your stay soon, Frank Soule Lodge is already fully booked for the summer of 2022 and fall is filling up fast. The Boathouse booking just recently opened but is expected to fill up quickly. Visit vanderkampny. com for more booking information.

ROMANIAN WHISKY ARRIVES IN THE USA | BY KEVIN PILLEY

W

orth $790m, the United States became the No.1 market for Scotch whisky in 2021. It has been estimated that four bottles of Scotch were exported to the US every second last year. The first few cases of Romanian are now available made in place called Pleasa. The Carpathian Mountains of Romania boasts the largest track of virgin forests in Central Europe and nearly a half 45% of the continent’s big carnivores’ population. Nearly half of the 930 mile long Carpathian (from the Dacian for rocky) chain is in Romania, as well as providing the home of the largest free European wolf and bear populations, the region has now lent its name to the country’s first malt was launched in the US on May 21 – World Whisky Day, and it’s made by a Scotsman not a Transylvanian. The 46% ABV The whisky has been under the stewardship of master distiller Allan Anderson, formerly of the Great Northern Distillery, Slane Distillery, Whyte, Mackay and the Loch Lomond Distillery. “When we started in 2017, we set out to make a world-class single malt whisky. We began by upgrading our equipment and updating the training of our laboratory staff. “The first distillate was produced in September 2017. We now have thousands of casks with 37 different whiskies. Over a 30-year career, I’ve made

hundreds of millions of liters of whisky, in large grain distilleries and in smaller malt plants, across three countries. This is the first time I’ve seen it through from inception all the way to signing the first release of the finished product with my name as Master Distiller. It’s been a hugely rewarding experience. “It is immensely gratifying to contribute to writing this part of Romanian history.” Carpathian is the first single malt to have been matured in ex-Romanian wine casks/The Alexandrion Group, Romania’s largest spirits and wine producer and distributor will showcase the range of single malts with global events throughout the year. The liquids will make their debut as a special event held in the residence of the Romanian ambassador to the US in Washington D.C. Founding chairman and the only east European Keeper of the Quaich, Syrian businessman Nawaf Salameh, says: “We have been quietly distilling and maturing the single malt whisky liquid since 2017, sourcing casks from all over Europe and the USA.” The three inaugural expressions are a Feteasca Neagra and Pinot Noir whisky from the brand’s Romanian Wine Cask Selection, and a Madeira cask-finished whisky, which its feature as part of the Spanish and Portuguese Wine Cask Selection.

110 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SUMMER 2022

Both the Feteasca Neagra and Madeira-finished whiskies were initially matured in first-fill Bourbon casks, while the Pinot Noir expression was exclusively matured in Romanian Pinot Noir casks. The use of Romanian wine casks is a ‘world first’ in terms of single malt production, despite Romania’s 2,000-year history of wine production. Later in the year, there will be a commercial launch of 10,000 bottles with eleven finishes. Carpathian Single Malt is distilled, matured and bottled at the Alexandrion Saber 1789 Distillery. The company also operates the Gleneida Distillery in Carmel, New York. Adds Anderson: “This whisky perfectly showcases our distillery terroir. The huge flavor impact of our malted 100% Romanian barley, the pure sub-Carpathian water combined with the unique flavors of Romanian and Portuguese wine casks make Carpathian Single Malt an exquisite whisky, which without doubt will become one of the best in the world as it further matures. “The maturation in warmer climate regions vs Scotland (+5⁰C on average) might explain the unique, milder character of this superb whisky.”
