matteo bocelli Musical Brilliance By Heléne Ramackers Photographs courtesy Matteo Bocelli and Luca Rossetti
Following sold-out shows in South Africa’s cities of Johannesburg and Cape Town, fans couldn’t get enough of the musical brilliance of the young Matteo Bocelli, singing alongside his father, Andrea. The assumption might be made that his vocal abilities come from great genes, but nothing this remarkable can be attained without a good dose of talent and determination. YOU WERE BORN INTO MUSICAL ROYALTY – THE SON OF WORLD-FAMOUS ITALIAN TENOR ANDREA BOCELLI. WHAT ARE THE FONDEST MEMORIES OF YOUR FORMATIVE YEARS? Since I was a child, I have many memories related to music, because, as you can imagine, it accompanied me from morning to night. I started studying piano at the age of seven on the advice of my father and from that moment, I never abandoned it. YOUR FATHER IS WIDELY LISTED AS YOUR INSPIRATION – HE IS ALSO YOUR TUTOR? My Dad has had many roles in my musical growth. I have been greatly inspired by him. From the first day I decided to pursue this career he became a tutor, a trusted person with a lot of experience in the field who can always give me the right advice. Who could do it better than him? YOU MADE YOUR DEBUT AS A TENOR IN 2016 AT THE AGE OF 19 IN FRONT OF TWELVE THOUSAND SPECTATORS AT THE TEATRO DEL SILENZIO. WHAT WAS THAT EXPERIENCE LIKE FOR YOU?

I was very nervous, not only because I was singing in front of so many people and I wasn’t used to it, but also because at the last minute my Dad decided to sing a song that I hadn’t prepared. Apart from this, it was a beautiful experience for me, a moment I will never forget. THERE WERE MANY MORE PERFORMANCES AFTER THAT. DID YOU EVER HAVE/DO YOU HAVE STAGE FRIGHT SINGING IN FRONT OF SO MANY PEOPLE? Naturally, the first few times you are particularly tense, but with the passage of time you get used to it. Today, I’m pretty quiet and I think it’s right to always have a little fear, because it means you care about what you are doing. WHICH PERFORMANCES ARE HIGHLIGHTS FOR YOU? In particular, I remembered the concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City, where you can breathe the magic of the evenings when that stage was played by all-time great artists like Frank Sinatra, Queen and many others. THE DUET WITH YOUR FATHER ‘FALL ON ME’ IS ABSOLUTELY GOOSEBUMP BEAUTIFUL. WHAT IS THE MESSAGE BEHIND THE SONG AND IT MUST BE INCREDIBLE TO PERFORM WITH YOUR FATHER? Basically, the song is about the relationship between father and son, in which the latter is becoming a man and appeals to his father to help him find the way that will make him happy in life.I think this song, especially the message, has reached many people because it tells the reality based on the true affection that exists between me and my Dad. In all honesty, singing with my Dad was a wonderful experience that led us to spend some time together around the world, but at the same time, an everyday thing, because I’ve been singing with him since I was a child (Matteo laughs). APART FROM YOUR MUSICAL TALENTS, YOU HAVE DONE SOME ADVERTISING WORK WITH ICONIC BRANDS, COLLABORATING WITH SOME HIGH-PROFILE CELEBRITIES. WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING ON THE GUESS FALL / WINTER 2017 CAMPAIGN ALONGSIDE JENNIFER LOPEZ? Working in the fashion world was a very fun experience for me, something new that I had never done before. Collaborating with Jennifer Lopez has made the experience even more fantastic. She is an artist who has shown so much and who today, is not tired of getting involved to give even more. YOU VISITED SOUTH AFRICA FOR THE FIRST TIME WHEN YOU PERFORMED IN JOHANNESBURG AND CAPE TOWN. IT MUST HAVE BEEN LOVELY TO EXPERIENCE IT WITH YOUR FAMILY AND IT

SEEMS AS THOUGH YOU HAD SOME AMAZING ANIMAL SIGHTINGS ON YOUR FIRST SAFARI. I had never been to South Africa and my brother Amos and I had promised ourselves for many years to visit this wonderful country … finally we made it! The safari experience was wonderful and the air you breathe revitalizes you. A magical place from which you would never want to leave. I hope to be back soon. It was truly an unforgettable experience. Africa will forever be in my heart. EXCITING PROSPECTS IN THE PIPELINE? I am very focused on my musical studies at the Lucca Conservatory in Italy, and at the same time I get a bit of space to experiment my voice on various musical genres. When the time comes, who knows ... maybe I’ll release my own album. FERRARI 8 TRIBUTO FERRARI CELEBRATES EXCELLENCE | BY DELLVIN ROSHON Ferrari’s F8 Tributo is an homage to the uncompromising power and importance of the 720 v, the most powerful V8 in ‘’Prancing Horse history’’; the new car replaces the 488 GTB, with spare no expense improvements across the board; it punches out 50 cv, is lighter and benefits from improvements in aerodynamic efficiency, and offers the highest levels of performance of any car to date; and given the remarkable fusion of sophisticated modern sportiness with pure driving pleasure, automotive enthusiasts may well ask what’s behind the move. Unprecedented, bold, and extravagant, Ferrari’s big reveal came at the February 19 Geneva Motor Show. Particularly buoyant about the new car, Ferrari notes that, “The 3902 cc V8 won “Best Engine” in the International Engine of the Year awards three years running in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and, in addition, in 2018, was awarded the title of the best engine of the last two decades.” Italian for ‘’tribute’’, the F8 Tributo is designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre. It’s basically a
bridge to a new design language that emphasizes the characteristics of Ferrari’s brand DNA: high performance and extreme aerodynamic efficiency.
round air vents, new steering wheel and controls as well as a new 7” passenger touchscreen display, significantly enhance the on-board environment for driver and passenger.
The S-Duct, a key characteristic of the car, made its debut on the 488 Pista, but redesigned to suit the extensive modifications made to the car. The result is that the S-Duct alone contributes an impressive 15% to the overall increase in down force compared to the 488 GTB. Additionally, the new, more compact, horizontal LED headlights allowed Ferrari’s aerodynamicists to incorporate new brake cooling intakes in combination with those on the outside of the bumper. The goal is to improve overall air flow throughout the entire wheel arch, while avoiding an increase the size of the braking system to cope with the car’s greater speed.
There is also a 40 kg weight reduction which makes the 488 GTB sportier, more agile and makes a significantly enhances the driver experience. Aside from the engine components, further lightweight solutions include bumpers made from a lighter plastic material, a carbonfibre rear spoiler, and a rear window in Lexan®-which is lighter than glass. The weight reduction measures are topped off by the choice of optional carbon-fibre rims and a lithium ion battery.
The cabin retains the classic, driver-oriented cockpit look typical of Ferrari’s mid-rearengined berlinettas, but every element of the dash, door panels and tunnel, has been completely redesigned. The new generation HMI (Human-Machine Interface), complete with
What crystalizes is an homage to the shared passions and values of both brands: high performance; superior craftsmanship; and disruptive, emotionally resonant design. With the F8, Ferrari dramatically capture the synergy between both cars with Ferrari’s F8.

egan in Switzerland in 2010 within the company Hydros, the FOILER project began leading to the new 2019 iteration of the luxury yacht. With a passion of applying high-tech engineering to sailing and flying, ENATA Industries debuted its 31-foot Foiler at the 2018 Dubai International Boat Show. The latest 2019 version showcases stylish upgrades along with performance systems making it more efficient and sleeker than its previous model. This client-ready version of the yacht underwent more than 1,000 hours of extensive testing to add various improvements to performance and design. Boasting four carbon fiber hydrofoils that lift the vessel five feet off the water, it gives the impression that the stylish yacht is gliding in air. The yacht starts in “Float Mode”, but when pilot presses the “Fly Mode” button on the dashboard it hydraulically launches the yacht’s hydrofoils, hydro-foiling speeds start 18 knots. Claiming to eliminate seasickness due to its smooth ride, the yacht is able to effortlessly glide over waves as high as six-anda-half feet. FOILER can run solely on battery power for 10 minutes, cruising in silence, while the hybrid propulsion system is comprised of twin 320-hp BMW diesel engines, two electric generators and two Enata electric torpedoes. With a cruising speed of 30 knots, the yacht is able to go 130 nautical miles off the 79-gallon fuel tank; and with no lag between the steering wheel and the Foiler turning, those behind the wheel are afforded a thrillseeking ride. SPECIFICATIONS: • Max speed: 40 knots • Cruise speed: 30 knots • Length: 31’ • Height for storage: 7’6” • Accommodates: Eight people • Beam with foils retracted: 10’10” • Beam with foils deployed: 23’7” • Draft in non-foiling: 2’

VACHERON CONSTANTIN’S
THE EXTRAORDINARYMECANIQUES SAUVAGES COLLECTION
| BY DELLVIN ROSHON WILLIAMS
Bespoke Vacheron Constantin timepieces have been at the forefront of the discerning watch collector’s experience since 1755. From countless components fashioned on the Rhône, guilloche and enameled dials, and astronomical and grand strike complications, to the 2015 unveiling of Ref. 57260 (the world’s most complicated timepiece), with 57 horological complications, the Maison’s tradition of excellence has been embodied in the brand’s Atelier Cabinotiers special order workshop. Vacheron Constantin’s tradition of hand-finished personalized timepieces continues with bespoke services for watch cases, movement/ complications, dial/hands, and strap/bracelets. This year Atelier Cabinotiers reveal an unprecedented collection of wild animal (‘’animaux suavages’’) adorned dials and/or case timepieces named Mécaniques Sauvages. Three dimensional as they are, the falcon, goat, lynx, cobra, rhinoceros, and elephant were all chosen by artisans for symbolic value and to further demonstrate the power of the art form. Mécaniques Sauvages is a collection of 20 in-house manufacture artisanal favorites. Buyers were able to acquire certified pieces that were literally one-of-a-kind without the wait. Upscale Living takes a look. First up is the Vacheron Constantin Armillary Tourbuillon Serpent. A jaw-dropping six patents have been filed for because of the retrograde hour and minute indicators on the right side of the watch. Armillary uses six-double axis tourbuillon with an escape wheel made entirely of silicon.
One the left side of the watch is Vachercon Constantin’s iconic symbol. The 45mm red gold case is a delicately-wrought hand-engraved snake wraps around the outside of the case. Next is the Les Cabinotiers Calibre 2755 Eagle. With a red gold case, the timepiece is complete with a minute repeater, tourbuillon, perpetual calendar and power reserve indicator. The ornament detail of the case flanks are engraved with a stunning eagle. The delicate pounced ornament engraving uses the intaglio fine line technique to remove material to create reliefs and bring light to the artwork. Hand-decorated enamel dials come in a number of different techniques. There’s champlevé (enamel placed in shallow metals surfaces), cloisonné (enamel in outlined gold wire), plique-à-jour (for stained glass effect), and the ultra-rare Blanc de Limoges. Vacheron Constantin’s work in Grand Feu Grisaille utilizes a coating technique that coats a gold dial blank with a dark brown, black, or blue layer of enamel with a rare white enamel applied over it called Blanc de Limoges—which, by the way, is no longer available for purchase. Six pieces featuring six different animals complete this set. Individual hairs on each animal are so life like they seem to lift from the timepieces themselves. The Geneva-sealed Automatic Caliber 2460 SC becomes visible when the owner opens the white gold officer’s case back on the back of the watch, which can also be personalized with engraving, or guilloche. This watch is perfectly proportioned, measuring only 9.2 mm in height. In the end, Atelier Cabinotiers special order workshop and their extraordinary Mécaniques Sauvages collection take the brand’s motto “Faire mieux si possible, ce qui est toujours possible (Do better if possible, and that is always possible)” to new heights. 19 Upscale Living Magazine |

The brand ethos of Alepel is to create a creative intervention with luxury and footwear, the very first collection of Alepel represented the designer home country, Venezuela. The collection featured a landscape of the Venezuelan culture and vibe, with the Venezulan flag, the vibrant flora with Troupial, the national bird of Venezula.

The Miami-based designer founded her brand ‘Alepel’ in 2014 as a release of her artistic perspective. “From buildings to shoes, there is so much commonality between the design processes of both industries. There is a process of conceptualizing, formulating a construction mechanism, finalizing a structure, considering functionality” said Ms. Epelboim-Levy Alepel is not ordinary footwear and accessory brand, it is a step towards the future of accessories; customisation. Buying Jewelry at Auctions Jewelry departments were once overlooked at auction houses selling to a relatively few individuals who had the wealth and appreciation of jewelry as art, and were willing to make the trek to the few auction houses that provided these sales.

While jewelry can be timeless accessories, specific designs and styles go in and out of vogue. This is important to note because if something does strike your fancy, its value can be determined by market forces. If it isn’t hot right now, you can get it for a great price today and hold onto to it until there is demand. One of the world’s foremost collectors of jewels, Kazumi Arikawa of Albion Art in Japan, had an interest in tiaras long before they became highly sought after among collectors. He gradually purchased 150 superb examples that are now very valuable.
hose days are long gone as these jewelry sales can be found in auction houses big and small, all over the world and online. Today, everyone has the access and ability to buy jewels that are beautiful and in some cases have a special story to tell.
You can participate in auctions without leaving your house. In addition to their international live auctions, Sotheby’s and Christie’s offer high quality jewels exclusively sold online in timed auctions. Bonhams auction house holds fine jewelry sales in New York and Los Angeles. Smaller jewelry houses, such as Freeman’s in Philadelphia, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in Denver and Doyle in New York, are all over the country. A common false assumption when it comes to auctions is that all of the items are incredibly expensive. It’s easy to see why this belief exists as huge sales, usually having to do with statement colored diamonds or royal or celebrity-related jewels, grab international headlines. But if you’re curious, determined and enjoy a good hunt, there are many more exceptional jewels that don’t get the attention of the general public. They can include high-quality diamonds and gems and jewels for any occasion—from engagement rings to pieces that could be worn daily.
“When I started 35 years ago tiaras were inexpensive despite the fact that they were mostly set with many diamonds. No one was interested in them; they were totally out of fashion,” he said recently. “I understood and appreciated the beauty and meaning of tiaras.”

Beyond market value at the moment, the value of a fine piece of preowned jewelry is determined by its craftsmanship and the worth of its materials. Other factors can include provenance, rarity, celebrity appeal, the jewelry house or designer who made it, and where it was sold. The terms “estate,” “vintage” and “antique” are often used interchangeably when describing jewelry, but their differences are important in determining the value of an item. Estate jewelry refers to any piece that has been previously owned, regardless of its age. An antique jewel is at least 100 years old. The reason why antique jewels are popular among collectors is because of their rarity and because they are almost always handmade, which carries extra value. Vintage jewelry is between 20 and 100 years old. These definitions regarding the age of jewelry are further defined in periods (similar to art) describing the styles and materials used during a specific time period. They Include Victorian, Belle Époque and Art Deco. Among the most popular items at all prices today are “signed jewels” — pieces from famous jewelry houses and designers. Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Bulgari are among the most valuable to collectors but there are scores of others that have produced a countless number of high quality jewels from all periods. Unless you are a serious collector, the most important thing when it comes to buying jewels at auction is whether you like the piece. After all, jewelry is meant to be worn. | By Anthony DeMarco

Tiziana Terenzi Perfume The Alchemy of Beauty | By Natalie King
A
breeze carries the fragrance of roses and lemon trees over the ancient Italian stone wall before you enter the garden. The fleeting blooms of flowers are in harmony with the permanence of ancient stone, and it is here in the Italian countryside, where one family has been taken with beauty and creation for centuries. Fully immersed in fragrance and the arts since childhood, Paolo Terenzi is a renaissance man dedicated to the pursuit of beauty, love of family and the art of fragrance. Paolo is a third-generation perfumer whose roots trace back to the family’s production of paschal church votives in the mid-20th century. Together Paolo and his sister Tiziana launched Tiziana Terenzi in 2012. The jewel-like bottles, designed by Tiziana, encase perfume that is exquisite in its uniqueness. The first time that I met with Paolo, he showed me a box holding vials of essence that have taken decades to collect on his travels including White Oud, Chestnut Wood, Amber, Vanilla and Cypriol. Experiencing fragrance alongside Paolo notes that are first unnoticed are brought forward and the individual elements are discussed with such passion, you can see why his life and work are so intertwined. From food, fashion, music, to the elements of the earth, he sees a vital connection and poetry that run through all things of beauty that make up life. He is friends with agriculturalists all over the world and much like the production of wine, he will wait for seasons until he finds certain notes of an essence, lavender for example, that has the exact alchemy that he has in mind. Elements like rain, soil composition and ocean air have effects on the flowers and trees, and he will search for years to find the exact scent that he is looking for. This is the antithesis of the mass-production fragrance house mentality. He recalls memories spent at the family home in the Italian countryside with Tiziana, where the fragrance line is made to this day. In one memory, it’s a night spent outside in the gardens where a roaring fire distills flowers, and orientating himself by the stars, Paolo’s grandfather pointed out the constellation Orion and its mythical belt. This memory became the inspiration for Orion in the LUNA collection and is a creation of elements like Bergamot, Red Currant, Jasmine and Incense which recalls an ethereal, majestic fragrance with earthy undertones. He keeps a notebook on him at
all times so that memory and discovery can be recorded as he discovers notes to combine, essences to explore and the muse behind the scent that he creates. He is a reminder to slow down and enjoy the beauty and wonder around us. We talked about perfume, entertaining and family history: WHERE IS A FAVORITE LOCATION THAT YOU SOURCE FROM? CAN YOU TELL A STORY OF THE LENGTHS THAT YOU’VE GONE FOR A PARTICULAR SCENT? My favorite ingredient is nature and I put it in all my creations! There is no distance I wouldn’t overcome if it was worth discovering a new precious ingredient to enrich our creations further. I am used to traveling with the scope of finding the best farmers in the world and personally verify all the extraction details: I went to Laos for the best Oud, to Kazanlak for Bulgarian Rose and up to the Indian Ocean for Amber Grey. These experiences drove me to write notes about what I was experiencing as if my hands, eyes, and arms did not have enough room to store all the wonderful events. As a child I always linked the olfactory sense to my memories, trying not to use words but smells to tell the story of an emotion, a place or a meeting. Now that I have traveled all over the world, my library contains thousands of olfactory creations and memories, unforgettable moments of an extraordinary life and a journey that is not yet finished. It is a family passion: our grandfather Guglielmo was a perfumer and collector! During his long life, he collected several precious oils and perfumes all around the world and nowadays these unique compositions are in my library. One of the biggest collections of Oud, some of which have macerated with original natural Musk for more than 45 years. Something so unique that has no price! THE PACKAGING OF TIZIANA TERENZI IS SO BEAUTIFULLY MADE. YOUR SISTER IS THE CREATOR OF THESE VESSELS AND PACKAGING. DOES SHE WORK OFF THE INSPIRATION FROM THE SCENT TO DESIGN OR DO YOU BOTH WORK TOGETHER WITH A CONCEPT FROM THE START?
I am very close to Tiziana. We have shared everything since we were kids and we have always faced our life together, in good and bad times. The bond between brother and sister is the special touch that lies behind all our creations, like the magical ingredient in all our products that makes them such unique works. In our creations every detail is important, and nothing is left to chance! Not only the bottle or the box is significant yet every single component, but even the imperceptible ones like the pump mechanism are also selected with the greatest attention and dedication since an artwork does not accept compromises. Tiziana and I share everything. It is hard to tell where one word ends and a new one starts. She deals with the creative part and the design of the Brand however in every instance we share and participate together in the creative process, both in the fragrance and in the bottle. Every detail is examined and treated with the greatest attention and passion since our creations are entirely dedicated to the memory of our father Evelino who passed away more than 10 years ago. The Italian note ’X TE’ that you find in every box means “For You” as if it was a precious gift. For us is for Terenzi Evelino, the man thanks to whom we have become adults! DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR GRANDFATHER AN INFLUENCE OF WHAT YOU ARE CREATING NOW? CAN YOU TELL ME THE STORY OF WHEN HE HAD YOU SMELL THE LEMONS ON YOUR PROPERTY BLINDFOLDED, AND HOW THIS HAS SHAPED YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE COMPLEXITIES OF FRAGRANCE? Grandfather Guglielmo had always loved perfumes, especially colognes; he created his own personal collection of them, using natural essences from his beloved land. His love of music and syncopated rhythm always seeped into his creations like an author’s signature. He is the one who taught me all about perfumes. He was my Teacher. Together with him as a child, I walked through the woods, surrounded by the wonderful and unspoiled nature of our beautiful country. Being a Perfumer, he taught me to recognize all the smells

of nature and to compose my own olfactory tunes. He would pick flowers and, with my eyes closed, I would play at guessing the species. He would break a sprig of wood and I had to recognize the plant. I always bring the scent of nature with me as my universal sentimental dictionary with which I write my olfactory poems. He’ll always be my Mentor and he is still the unsurpassed Master for me. I’M VERY DRAWN TO THE IDEA OF ENTERTAINING MORE AT HOME. THIS IS A PROSPECT THAT PEOPLE FIND DAUNTING, BUT EUROPEANS SEEM TO DO WITH SUCH EASE. CANDLES AND HOME FRAGRANCE ARE A PART OF THE AMBIANCE THAT IS SO TRANSFORMATIVE, EVEN IN THE SMALLEST OF DINING SPACES. WHAT OTHER ELEMENTS ARE QUINTESSENTIAL OF THE EUROPEAN HOSPITALITY THAT YOU LIKE TO LIVE WITH ON A DAILY BASIS AND ALSO FOR DINNER OR COCKTAIL PARTIES? Hospitality in my region has a very strong value; it is a fundamental component of life. Having guests is a blessing and we adore inviting friends over at home; enjoying the pleasure of tasty food cooked with passion for hours, while we share stories or opinions about the last book we have read, or exhibition we have visited. Communing life with guests helps you grow and enriches your soul, because it is a great source of stimulation for creativity and inspiration. I adore having good food in my house, such as artisanal cheese and organic wines locally sourced from neighboring farms. When I host a dinner I always create a magical ambiance by using candlelight only; there are hundreds of candles warming the atmosphere of my houses as I do not use any artificial light for these intimate gatherings. I also believe that a stocked bar is essential to create a true sense of hospitality; as a matter of fact, I am truly passionate about whisky and I have my own precious collection with very rare bottles in my own bar at home. Wine is another key element: I love it and all the hard work behind a bottle. A final touch would be some good music to accompany the storytelling of our lives. However, what I consider the true meaning of being rich is the pleasure of sharing these precious bottles and nectars with closest friends and people we love the most. This is the deepest essence of life and it is all enclosed in the various expressions of love. COULD YOU SHARE A FAVORITE FAMILY MEAL? I’d love to share the most typical dish from our beloved region Emilia Romagna: the famous Piadina. This old, traditional type of bread used to be the food of the poor, but with time 26 Upscale Living Magazine | MAY 2019
passing by, it became a traditional dish loved by many. The traditional piadina is cooked in a teggia, a rounded terracotta like pan heated over coals, but nowadays most people make it on special electric stoves. Piadina can be stuffed with vegetables, cheeses, meats. Probably the most famous filling is with Parma Ham, Stracchino cheese or Squacquerone cheese (soft and slightly acidic white fresh cheese). There are many different variations, it can even become a dessert, with Nutella and bananas for example, or be turned into a vegetarian dish by replacing the traditional lard with olive oil or soymilk. IF YOU COULD CHOOSE ONE CANDLE AND ONE FRAGRANCE FOR READERS TO EXPERIENCE, WHAT ARE YOUR TWO FAVORITES? My favorite scent is that which I have yet to make and has yet to be created because this wonderful journey through emotions and experiences around the fire of life will never end. “Listening” to perfume takes time and patience. Scents, like a symphonic melody, evolve over time and a quick sniff is not enough to fully understand its explosion of perfume. I suggest you take your time when choosing a fragrance for yourself or a loved one. The scent accompanies you throughout the day and tells us about you, exposing your mood and character to those around you. It is an intimate part of our Being and it should be handled with care. The perfume is the brother of the breath and tames the heart of men, said the poet, and that is what I most firmly believe. Therefore, I always recommend that you dwell a while on the heart notes of the essence because they are the true song of the perfume. They represent what others perceive of us. In fact, the light and pandering top notes flee quickly in less than a few minutes, giving way almost immediately to the persistence and strength of the heart supported by the base of the perfume. As in love, so too does a scent need a beautiful heart and we must try to find this to understand the message and the melody of the essence. A perfume is a good weapon of our soul and we must choose it with utmost care. When I create customized and tailored perfumes for my VIP customers, before working among the alembics and potions in my laboratory, I spend a lot of time chatting with them to understand the essence of their being. Only then can I translate their personality into a scent that will forever be their indelible signature written in the wake of the breeze. My most sincere general advice is to follow your nose and listen to your Soul… they will guide you to the right decision.

I consider all our creations as children and I do love them all equally; it is tough having to choose which one is the favorite among them. What I can confidently say is that artistically I feel a strong bond with the fragrance Ecstasy, because it embodies the style of creative tension, altered by dissonances and cosmic tensions that have been acknowledged by expert critics. I adore the fragrance, while the candle accompanies my nights spent at home delighting in my moments of reflection with the sound of its flame and scent of its inebriating fragrance. DO YOU THINK THAT THE SCENT OF FLOWERS AND OF YOUR CANDLES HAVE THE ABILITY TO CHANGE ONE’S MOOD? I’M STUDYING BOTANY CURRENTLY AND I’M SO INTERESTED IN THE ALCHEMY AND HEALING ASPECTS OF PLANTS. It is scientifically proven that perfumes have the power of influencing our brain’s limbic system, and by doing so it affects our mood and increases our attention as it happens for instance with citrus fragrances such as lemon or bergamot, or rather help us relax and meditate. I always have lit candles in my house, in my office, and in my laboratory: I let myself be inspired by the flames and their evolutions; living on candlelight makes the world a better place and fragrances become the olfactory design of the space we are surrounded by. I personally call it “Air Design” and I love bringing it to life in different ways. During my career as a perfumer, I have designed many celebrities’ houses as well as prestigious Hotels. HOW DO YOU UNWIND EACH NIGHT? I recognize I am a privileged and lucky person because in life I always fought to reach my happiness and to make my dreams as a man and artist come true. Life is my cure against depression, and I don’t need anything else to be grateful! I am full of curiosity and eager to discover what is unknown to me, hence I don’t need anything else to hang on to rather than life itself, living and feeling the moment. I love living intensively every second I am gifted with without wasting any precious time, taking full pleasure from every single bit I am offered as if it was the last one and enjoying the intense taste that only life has. When I leave work, I return home to spend quality time with my beloved family and unwind in sharing simple but precious moments with them. I often play my guitar as I used to do when I was a jazz guitarist, or rather listen to some of my favorite sounds which have also been source of inspiration in so many moments of my life: from Wes Montgomery to Joe Pass,
B E A U T Y
from Miles Davis to Dizzy Gillespie with whom I have had the utmost honor to play live the year before he passed away. However, my one and only musical mentor for his genius and artistic recklessness is Chet Baker; his music has been the soundtrack of my love story with the woman who became my wife and mother of my children. It is often while I listen to his music, in the peaceful atmosphere of my home that I write in my diary; taking notes of creation I have in mind and want to bring to life like a new child for my collections. And since we are talking about means to unwind; there is one passion that blows in my soul like no other: sailing. Whether alone in winter time or with my beloved family during warm summer days, sailing on my boat is my ultimate resolution. I am the captain of a beautiful boat and I sailed across all the seas of the world: from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific, from the Atlantic to the Caribbean while my favorite of all has always been the Mediterranean, rich in history and ancient beauty. What truly makes me happy and gives me energy is setting sail from the harbor of my small town overlooking the Adriatic Sea, aiming at far distances while sailing for nights and days, miles and miles away crossing the Mediterranean. Each journey is a source of inspiration to reconnect with nature and healthy life rhythms; because the sea is the greatest master who knows how to teach the true value of being in this world. WHAT IS A FAVORITE OBJECT OR FURNITURE PIECE IN YOUR HOME OR DESIGN STUDIO? I am in awe of beauty, and I love the harmony that bonds shapes. I adore objects that prove consistency in their components and that have a deep connection with natural elements such as leather and wood. I love sculptures carved from precious woods and root tables that filter the deep bond with nature. However, my favorite piece of furniture in my home is the chimney; I never turn it off because it is a key element for the atmosphere we like to keep. We use it for cooking or simply to warm us up during cold winter nights. I could spend hours staring at the fire crackles and breathing the unique scent of burning wood. This is the reason behind the name “Camino” for some of our candles in the Tiziana Terenzi Collection; because they are real bonfires that can transport the magic of burning flames anywhere. FOR THOSE UNABLE TO EXPERIENCE THE BEAUTY OF WHERE YOU CREATE TIZIANA TERENZI CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE SETTING AND HOW THIS MAY INFLUENCE YOUR WORK?
Respecting man and the environment are the first steps towards realizing a “great” product. In fact, we cannot produce “well-being” without being aware of what surrounds us; the environment, the workplace, safety, and welfare. Our Candle Palace is built on strong emotional pillars: our family history, our soul drivers, our passions and dreams and most of all, the memories of our beloved father Evelino and Grandfather Guglielmo. Our working spaces are a blend of colors and scents that give life to wide spaces where creativity is motivated, and professionalism filters in every corner. Our Company philosophy is the basis of all our choices and part of it also gives great importance to practices with zero environmental impact. WHAT ARE YOU BRINGING TO THE WORLD WITH YOUR UNIQUE SCENTS? The memory of the experiences lived is what drives our creations, always developed to crystallize in the heart the beauty of the passing moments. Sensory evolution that surrounds us like a warm hug when we are hypnotized by the scent of our perfumes. A reminder that you can live like a traveling experience, simply by closing your eyes and leaving yourself drifting by the notes of these precious scents.
These perfumes embody the powerful Faustian desire to try to hold on to a beautiful moment, and the constant exploration of the “self and the non-self ”. The perfume uses its full power to evoke the experience of being by the fire a moment which represents a life lived to the fullest and intense, living in the moment - the sharing of an intimate moment with the rest of the cosmos. All the evocative essences of a beautiful memory are trapped inside the precious olfactory molecules, forever etched in our minds. Ours is not just perfuming, but an actual journey through personal emotions and memories. Because of their unique quality, these creations have started out as a series of notes jotted down in old notepads narrating a journey which has yet to end. As well, the formulation of the molecules does follow the rules of traditional haute perfumery; instead, it opens itself up to the freedom of exploring all possible alchemies, through “politically incorrect” actions. It manages to represent the true essence of life, including its imperfections, tensions, dissonances, all of which make the moment simply beautiful. This is what we bring to the world: the purest journey through our true self. | Photos courtesy of Tiziana Terenzi perfume.
These perfumes can be worn like a tailormade dress of your soul or in your house looking for the echo of magic and faraway place. For me, perfume is music and as such should sing. In fact, before you smell a scent, you should listen to it, in the same way as music must be seen to be understood! This is the true essence of the magic that is enclosed in a drop of the precious Tiziana Terenzi perfume. A spell that is renewed each time it is worn, like a well-tuned symphonic orchestra that leaves the mark of its splendor in the wind. 27 Upscale Living Magazine | MAY 2019

modern work of art By Heléne Ramackers Photographs courtesy Kari Whitman
When Kari Whitman was commissioned by LAbased entrepreneur and philanthropist Justus Parmar to redesign his home, she knew she had her work cut out for her. Not one to shy away from a challenge, she created the most exquisite interiors in the short space of eight months; and spoke exclusively to Upscale Living magazine about the fun she had in turning another client’s vision into reality. “When Justus purchased this home, situated above Chateau Marmont in Marlay Drive, Sunset Plaza in Los Angeles, it didn’t look like anything; located in a very upscale and cool area up on the side of the hill, I knew I had to work a lot of magic with this project. The views are simply insane!” Which Kari surely did, incorporating her custom-made touches throughout the home, combining clean lines with modern and funky finishes. On the first floor is a cleverly designed living area, with a striking JFK Stikki Peaches work on canvas being a focal point, which Kari purchased from Art Angels. The circular couch that is custom designed by Kari perfectly offsets the beautiful custom rug on which it is positioned, made by Stark. Above the fireplace, Kari chose one of the new Samsung art televisions, transforming the television into a piece of art. In the corner of the living room, a stunning hanging custom chair by Forge North in brushed brass takes pride of place, specially made by Kari. “You would think, looking at it, that it is uncomfortable, but it’s quite the opposite,” she says. The dining area comprises of a huge and ultraheavy piece of travertine table top by VADR Collaborative, with the table designed by Kari and produced by Forge North. Kari remembers it taking seven guys and a crane to get the top into the room. “It’s really beautiful,” Kari says, “but never to be moved.” The light fitting above the table is a focal point and a 29 Upscale Living Magazine | MAY 2019

definite conversation piece, another Kari creation. In the kitchen, the bar stools were designed by Kari and made by Forge North, with fabric in Dresden Ruby by Ramtex. “The kitchen is really striking,” says Kari. “I ordered these specific cupboard door handles out of London from Philip Watts Design – they make such incredible ones – it looks like a snakeskin that comes together and when the cupboard doors are closed, it takes on a round shape. The lights above the kitchen table were bought and not made by me.” A guest room forms part of the 1st floor, with butterfly wallpaper, a side table and pendant lights by Shine by S.H.O. The Luciano Frigerio bronze King headboard is by Modern Art. The very comfortable pair of Marco Zanuso style lounge chairs with metal legs and brass sabots are from Chairish. On the same level, there is a viewing room for Justus, who loves watching soccer and basketball, so Kari fashioned a special room for him, with a custom sofa and a multi-level coffee table in brass, fabric, and wood by BL Custom Upholstery. Separating the viewing room from the rest of the area is a screen made of powder coated ball-bearings, giving the room an artistic feel. The upstairs master bedroom has a dreamy feel to it, with a custom designed bed by Kari and pedestals Shine by S.H.O. and chairs by Organic Modernism. The wall behind the bed was created using a Cassiopeia technique where the plaster is used, with tiny slivers of glass is spray onto the wall. A pivotal feature in the bedroom is The Kiss by WRDSMTH, acquired at Art Angels. An iconic bathroom was created, using a simple white tub, slightly elevated to soak in the views. A flowy feel was created with lots of light and a huge walk-in shower. Renowned for its vistas, this home has it in abundance. The infinity pool, hot tub, and firepit all form part of a magnificent outside living area. CELEBRATING
REMBRANDT IN AMSTERDAM | BY ANTHONY DEMARCO
T
his year marks the 350th anniversary of the death of Rembrandt and the Netherlands is celebrating its favorite son with a year-long celebration of his life and works. The 17th-Century Dutch Master spent most of his life in Amsterdam and that is where the center of the celebration is. The versatile and prolific draftsman, painter and printmaker are widely considered to be one of the greatest visual artists in history and the most important in Dutch history. His works depict a range of styles and subject matters, from portraits and self-portraits to landscapes, genre scenes, allegorical and historical scenes, biblical and mythological themes, and animal studies. What follows is when and where you can find the works of Rembrandt during the summer and fall. As an added bonus, there are a couple of suggestions of where to stay while viewing the art.
THE RIJKSMUSEUM It should come as no surprise that this internationally renowned museum would be the first place to go for Rembrandt retrospective. It owns the largest collection of Rembrandt’s works in the world and for the first time, it is showing nearly everything: 22 oil paintings (including The Night Watch and the Jewish Bride), 60
of his drawings and 300 of the museum’s collection of 1,300 Rembrandt prints. The combined exhibit is called “All the Rembrandts,” and you need to act fast if you want to see it as it ends June 10. The 17th century drawings and etchings are extremely fragile and have never before been displayed at one time. If you’re very lucky, you’ll receive a tour from Jane Turner, the head of the Rijksmuseum Print Room whose intense passion for prints and drawings from the Dutch Golden Age is contagious. For those coming later in the year you can see something rare, the restoration of The Night Watch. Beginning in July a glass chamber will be built around the painting and visitors will be able to observe the restorers at work.

Other activities surrounding the great Dutch artist include the “Long Live

Rembrandt” summer exhibition (July 15 – September 15), where visitors can view selected pieces of art inspired by Rembrandt create by the general public. The Rijksmuseum ends the year with Rembrandt – Velázquez (October 11 – January 19, 2020). This collaboration with Madrid’s Museo del Prado explores the commonality between the works of Rembrandt and fellow 17th Century painter Diego Velázquez of Spain. It will also include other 17th Century painters, such as Murillo and Hals, Zurbarán and Vermeer. THE REMBRANDT HOUSE MUSEUM In one of the oldest sections of Amsterdam, a large house that was Rembrandt’s home for about 20 years with a new addition serves as a museum. As expected it will be the site of several special exhibitions commemorating Rembrandt. In the summer the focus will be on works influenced by Rembrandt, which include Degas and Picasso. The exhibition “Inspired by Rembrandt,” runs from June 7 – September 1. THE JEWISH HISTORICAL MUSEUM This museum will be displaying the Rembrandt’s St.Peter in Prison (1631), which will be the focal point of an exhibition there September 30 – November 10. MAURITSHUIS MUSEUM For those who just can’t get enough of Rembrandt, you can take the hour-long train to De Hague to see the exhibition, “Rembrandt and the Mauritshuis,” which will run till September 15. It consists of 11 paintings that are known to be by Rembrandt, including what is believed to be his last self-portrait (1669), The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp (1632), Portrait of an Elderly Man (1667) and Homer (1663). It will also include two paintings that may be by Rembrandt and five paintings that were purchased by the museum as Rembrandts but are now believed to be copies or forgeries. The Mauritshuis is always worth the trip as its collection includes works by Jan Steen, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer, including the Girl with a Pearl Earring. One of its most recent acquisitions is St John the Baptist Preaching (1627) by Pieter Lastman, who taught Rembrandt for six months. WHERE TO STAY There are many high-quality hotels in Amsterdam but one that hits all the marks of comfort, sound service and convenience is the 34 Upscale Living Magazine | MAY 2019

Radisson Blu Hotel, Amsterdam (Rusland 17, 1012 CK). It’s a short walk to Dam Square and the Rembrandt House Museum and just a few minutes more to the central train station. It’s situated in a lively neighborhood filled with bars and cafes between two canals. It has two buildings on either side of a narrow Rusland street connected by an underground passageway. The large rooms are brightly colored with large windows bringing in plenty of sunlight and extremely comfortable beds. It has a well-equipped health club and a sauna and offers a high-quality buffet breakfast. For a luxurious experience, there’s the NH Collection Amsterdam Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky (Dam 9, 1012 JS) right on Dam Square. It’s a sleek modern hotel with some old-world touches. The rooms are large and bright with over-the-top comforts like plush chairs combined with sleek workstations. The en-suite bathroom has a separate tub and shower and loads of privacy if that’s what you prefer. The White Room by Jacob Jan Boerma is a Michelin Star restaurant with a plush classic white interior and with columns and gold-colored touches, mirrors and paintings. BLAINEY NORTH
Creating Dream Spaces By Heléne Ramackers Photographs courtesy of Blainey North
She knew from a young age that she was destined to work in Architecture and Interior Design. Today, Blainey North is at the helm of her namesake company in Australia, Blainey North Architecture & Interior Design, creating dream spaces around the world, one project at a time. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF. I always thought I would become an environmental lawyer, and then at the age of 16, my art teacher asked me if I had considered Architecture. While the rest of the class had been painting their friends, I had been painting bridges and stairs! It was like a bolt of lightning hit me, and I knew that was my destiny. DID YOU HAVE AN INFLUENCE IN YOUR YOUTH THAT SHAPED YOUR CAREER PATH? I’ve always been on my own path, and really quite single focused. I don’t look around much to see what anyone else is up to. I’m a bit of a lone wolf in that regard. However, I’ve had the most amazing people working with me to create the practice we have today. Tim Browne, my Architectural Director, has been with me for twelve years and really been integral in shaping the practice. YOU STARTED YOUR FIRM BLAINEY NORTH ARCHITECTURE & INTERIOR DESIGN AT THE AGE OF 21. WHAT AND WHO INSPIRES YOU?
When you’re creating a project, it’s important to have one person lead the creative vision if you want to develop a holistic integrated approach. This combination, of both Architecture, Interior and now our custom furniture and lighting, allows us to be in creative control of the project. Anyone who has ever had experience with construction will know there are so many variables and risks, so it’s a great benefit if you can mitigate some of those in the design area of the project, through having one person accountable. Prior to the 1900s, it was typically one lead architect who was the creative director of a project. In fact, most of the grand scale buildings and palaces have been built this way in history. It’s not a new idea to combine the practices, in fact, it’s an old one. We believe that it is impossible to really separate the design of the interior and exterior. WHAT ARE/HAVE BEEN THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER? One of the things that keeps me interested in the challenges of what we do. The complexity of design and construction is intellectually very stimulating and certainly never boring. It’s the challenge of the next job that keeps me alive, however, it’s always a learning curve working in remote areas. Working on a five-star resort on a remote island in the Maldives certainly had its logistical challenges to bring all the products by plane and sea. IMPORTANT LESSONS ALONG THE WAY? My mantra is to never let your standard slip, in your work or in your behavior. If you let your standards slip you will never be fulfilled. THE FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB?
I’m inspired by beautiful creative in all disciplines. It’s rare for really wellexecuted, considered creative these days, given the pace of life.
I really love spending time with my clients and being able to design a space that realizes a dream, that they might not even know they had!
IT’S QUITE UNIQUE TO HAVE AN ARCHITECTURAL AND INTERIOR DESIGN SERVICE; USUALLY, IT’S ONE OR THE OTHER. HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO ‘MARRY’ THE TWO CONCEPTS SUCCESSFULLY?
WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING AT THE HELM OF AN ARCHITECTURAL INTERIOR DESIGN SERVICE?

To be able to guide the process of the creative vision is really the best part. Having my own practice means I am able to work directly with the client and my teams to develop a unique vision for every project. I then have the luxury of seeing it come to life, which is just the best feeling in the world. AND THE WORST? When you are attempting to do something truly original, it means that no-one, the builder, the tradespeople, and even you, have done it before. That means that there are challenges which you aren’t anticipating throughout the process. It’s hard to do something new, that’s why it doesn’t happen every day, however, the reward is definitely worth the effort. IS YOUR HOME / ARE YOUR HOMES AS STUNNING AS THOSE OF YOUR CLIENTS? I’M THINKING OF THE OLD PROVERB OF THE SHOEMAKER’S CHILDREN THAT HAVE NO SHOES …. HOPEFULLY, THAT’S NOT THE CASE WITH YOUR ABODE(S). The truth is, I change my interior once every year or two. I feel strongly that the environment around you needs to reflect the way you are feeling about your life, or indeed the way you want to feel in your life. For example, after I had a baby, I wanted to feel quite calm and comforted, so I created an interior in the palest blues and greys and quite textural, yet minimal. Then a few years later, I felt like my life needed to feel more glamorous and decadent, so I recreated the space to be more luxurious in velvets and aged bronze and just generally more decorative. My husband likes to joke that on any given day, he has no idea where he will put his keys, as the furniture moves around so much. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ROOMS IN YOUR OWN HOME(S) AND WHY? I love my bedroom. I’ve been inspired by a Yves Tanguy surrealist painting called the ‘Furniture of Time’. Which is a beautiful, endless sort of landscape full of strange objects. At the moment, I look at this painting every day, and so decided to create my bedroom to have the same feeling as the painting. The Bedhead is in black silk velvet. WHAT KEY PIECES IN YOUR HOME CAN YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT? My waterfall artwork by the photographer Simon Chaput. It sits above my bed and makes me feel incredibly calm. TALK US THROUGH A TIMELESS INTERIOR DESIGN STYLE. Timeless interiors are about good design and good bones. In my opinion, things should line up and feel considered as a whole, not just a series of walls or rooms.

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO ACCESSORIZE? When designing a truly bespoke home or interior space, accessories are an incredibly important layering tool, adding character and creating personality to any space whether it be a grand residence or ultra-luxury hotel. It is these small pieces that often have the greatest impact on those who interact and use the space. IS THERE A RIGHT AND WRONG WHEN IT COMES TO DECORATING? PLEASE EXPLAIN. When styling and decorating a luxury interior, it is important to reference the occupier of the space and from that, develop a strong scheme of highly detailed sculpture, lighting, art and small decorative pieces that speak to the personality of the owner whilst yet acting silent and creating mood versus overpowering an interior. HOW DOES ONE KEEP THINGS MODERN/TIMELESS WITHOUT HAVING TO BREAK THE BANK? Invest in great pieces that are of good quality, and then re-accessorize or reupholster when you want to change your look. It’s really no different to clothes. If you buy well, you can have the pieces for life. DO YOU BELIEVE IN REPURPOSING DATED PIECES OR SHOULD ONE JUST SHOP FOR NEW ONES? As above, I think repurposing is really important. Good design will always stand the test of time. HAVE THERE BEEN PROJECTS THAT YOU HAVE DECLINED? IF YES, WHY? Every week! We only take on a certain number of projects in the Studios to ensure that I can be personally involved in each project. Amalfi coast so inspiring. I just love the way the buildings are nestled into the hill and that everything exists on so many different levels. YOUR DAUGHTER ACCOMPANIES YOU ON YOUR TRAVELS. THAT MUST BE A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE FOR BOTH OF YOU TO SEE THE WORLD THROUGH HER EYES – SEEING THINGS THROUGH A CHILD’S EYES IS SIMPLY MAGICAL. I have an office in London and New York, so we are constantly moving around. It’s only been made possible through the fact that she loves traveling and loves new places as much as I do! She’s five now and we have favorite spots all around the world that we look forward to going to together. WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN? Work! My life and my work are really one, and I have little time outside of that. I’m always visiting galleries and exhibitions, craftsmen, which all seem to be integral to my work, but quite fun. I do love a long lunch with my friends and I’ve also been known to hit the dancefloor at any opportunity! ANY EXCITING PLANS ON THE HORIZON? After a 5-year long process, I am very excited to launch my new furniture exhibition “Man & the Machine” in early June, so the coming months are a very exciting time for us as we personally invite our VIP clients to view the new collection as well as work closely with local and international galleries to showcase our work. Inspired by my affinity with the city and its ever-present tension with humans. The starting point was the contrast between the hardness of the city and the softness of the human body. Cities are resistant, edgy, repetitive, with a multiplicity of levels and scales, whereas human bodies are delicate, fluid, idiosyncratic; the contrast between the two is where the aesthetic life of the city really lies. It is the tension between these two aspects of modern life, the mechanical and the human, that forms the basis for the new furniture ranges. www.blaineynorth.com
I’m crazy about it. Really, I’ve been lucky enough to travel to so many places all around the world with my work and every place inspires me in some way, if I’m honest. The process for creating the Kangxi collection took 18 months mirroring the intricate life and work of Kangxi, the longest reigning emperor in Chinese history. As the fourth emperor of the Qing dynasty, he ruled for 61 years which saw an expansion of exchange to the West. Portrayed wearing yellow court robe embroidered with dragon, a Chinese imperial symbol, the ornate pen took a similar approach in its bedazzled design. Inspired by Kangxi attire and fascination with mechanics, the pen is offered in three distinct designs representing the emperor’s supreme power. The Royal Blue Dragon comes in white gold, diamonds and blue sapphires with a dazzling 11.53 carat sapphire set at the base; the www.upscalelivingmag.com

The Imperial Dragon is in champagne gold and white jade, adorned with yellow diamonds just like the yellow silk of the emperor’s gown. Its cap features a mechanism that drives the movement of the dragon’s eyes, cut in the shape of one of his sleeves, while the cone represents the movements in the heavens. A 6.42 carat square emerald-cut yellow diamond rotates freely at its center with the cap top set with diamonds and the clip is decorated with a natural white pearl.

JAMAICA Dreams Do Come True By Alina Rosa Leyva Photographs courtesy of S Hotel, Chukka Foundation, Round Hill and Alina Cabral
T
his time around, my travels took me to Montego Bay in beautiful Jamaica with its white sandy beaches, delectable cuisine, and its rich culture. After having a pretty smooth and relaxing flight, I looked out of the window and saw the beauty of the Caribbean; I was eager to land and commence my exciting Jamaican adventure. Once I arrived at the airport and gone through the motions, I picked up my luggage and headed to the S hotel, an ultra-chic boutique hotel overlooking Jamaica’s Famed Doctor’s Cave Beach and the irie Hip Strip. Entering the lobby was breathtaking; a towering 25-foot lobby walled with coral stone and a central boardwalk made from local Jatoba hardwood throughout, you can also enjoy the beauty of displayed art pieces made by the local artist providing a true Jamaican ambiance.
to see that my suitcase was already delivered to my room, and what a view! Upon entering the room, I marveled at the spacious and sleek interior decorated with a monochromatic theme, a big king size bed, and not far from it, you can step out to the patio to take in astonishing views of the ocean. Walking towards the west side of the room, a gorgeous custom-designed, oversized bathroom with a free-standing soaking tub was calling my name; massive walk-in shower with three showerheads releasing the perfect pressure, fluffy robes, bottles of water and the ideal mini-fridge for those night-time snacks. The view from my room itself gave me such a comforting feeling where I decided that, from then on, I was going to enjoy my morning breakfast there and delight in the gorgeous Caribbean sunrise.
I unpacked as fast as I could and headed downstairs to familiarize myself with the surroundings. I noticed a beautiful high-spirited Checking in was a breeze with very pool scene with striking red umbrelfriendly and courteous staff assistlas and comfortable lounge chairs ing me, and after sipping on their welcome drink, I headed to my suite throughout, I felt like I was somewhere in the 1950s era! and just a where I was pleasantly surprised
few steps away from the beach. The Sky Deck offered exclusive access to Sky’s Club Suite’s guests, boasting an advantageous rooftop location with a glass-enclosed pool surrounded by cabanas and loungers, the pictureperfect spot to enjoy delightful tapas and cocktails. The restaurants provided a variety of Jamaican cuisine; the pool bar & grill offered healthy snacks, made to order sandwiches, salads, fresh juices, and crafted cocktails; the Lobby Bar was chic and the best central meeting spot, serving a custom selection of wines, beers, and champagnes. Thus far, I loved everything I had seen and with that, I headed to the fitness facility, another spacious space displaying state of the art cardio machines, free weights and much more. Around the corner, a few steps away, I ventured into the Spa, which offered different packages of beauty treatments, including manicures and pedicures, massages, facials, body scrubs, and more. As I had planned, the next day, I had my morning breakfast on the balcony, where I enjoyed a plate of fresh fruits, a delicious blueberry egg-white omelet, with callaloo &

saltfish, a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and a cup of espresso. The time was well spent, and after getting myself ready, I headed downstairs to the main lobby where I met Dwight, our wonderful driver and guide who told us things about his beautiful Island. Today, we ventured off to Chukka Good Hope in Falmouth, approximately 22 miles from Montego Bay. Good Hope Estate was once a working village and sugar plantation, the Caribbean’s first and only nature adventure park that includes a zip line, rugged ATV and Dune Buggy adventures, amongst other activities. We also saw that they have a jungle river tubing for anyone who wants to kick back and enjoy the sun. At one point, I headed to the cascading waterfall pool, and with a cocktail in hand, I sat and enjoyed the sun and the surroundings. The experience in the Chukka Good Hope was like no other, with adventures for all ages. Back at the S Hotel and a few hours later, I was getting ready to attend a Round Hill Hotel and Villas cocktail party hosted by the chairman of board and HC to welcome the Newport RI International and Jamaican Polo teams. The Round Hill Hotel and Villas is situated on a lush 110 acre peninsula just west of Montego Bay; offering an array of vacation packages and exclusive offers for anyone who wants to visit this part of Jamaica. Their accommodations include 36 Ralph Lauren-designed oceanfront guest rooms, 90 luxurious villa rooms & suites, as well as a selection of 27 private 2-6 villas, package for every taste and family size. Round Hill was once, the retreat of choice for glamorous personalities of the 1950s, such as Jackie Onassis and John F. Kennedy. The cocktail party 48 Upscale Living Magazine | MAY 2019
was great, I conversed with lots of people and learned many things about Jamaica, especially their charity work that offers support to needy causes in the Island. Another event I had the pleasure of attending, was the yearly Sugar Cane Ball, a black-tie event drawing over 400 socialites, ambassadors, celebrities, and business leaders from around the world. This year, the event was able to exceed last year’s $600,000 efforts. What wonderful news to learn the dedication of all its participants for such an incredible cause. I truly had an amazing experience and if you get a chance next year to be a part of it, don’t miss the opportunity to attend and enjoy the excitement of ultimate giving.
own team! I even had the chance to experience stomping the divots while sipping champagne. It was time to head home, and after a long visit, I was fully satisfied and happy to have had such a wonderful opportunity to view and experience the other side of Jamaica.
All the activities I was part of, were refreshing and invigorating, I know myself, when I visit a Caribbean hot spot, I always tend to focus more on the beach, and other tourist places to visit, but on this occasion, I was gifted with a side of Jamaica that has a different aspect to it, the side that explores ways to make every life count. Excited to see the Newport Rhode Island International Polo Team; I could hardly contain myself for the much-awaited annual ChukkaHanover Charity Polo Event that took place in Sandy Bay. Hanover Charities has continued, through the years, to serve the needy, offering food for the hungry, helping schools, libraries, health facilities, and assisting deserving Hanovarian students through the Morris-Watkins Scholarship. The game turned out to be as electrifying as I had expected; you can watch the horses running at full speed and their skilled players hitting the ball downfield, everyone was roaring for their

Seattle Washington Ultimate Weekend in the Emerald City By Jarone Ashkenazi Photo courtesy of Visit Seattle and all participating sponsors
The seaport city just 113 miles south of the Canadian border, is the largest city in both the state of Washington and the Pacific Northwest region of North America. As one of the fastest-growing major city in the US over the past six years, Seattle’s heritage goes back nearly 4,000 years with a rich Native American history. Initially settled by Native Americans, the area was named Seattle in honor of Chief Si’ahl – commonly spelled Sealth in the city – of the local Duwamish and Suquamish tribes. Originating as a logging community, the city has recently become headquarters to aerospace giant Boeing and corporate monoliths such as Microsoft, Starbucks, Nordstrom and amazon. com.
March, Washington has earned national and international acclaim for its wine and grows nearly 70 different grape varieties. Between stalwarts like Pike Place Market and Space Needle, the burgeoning restaurant and cocktail scene, Seattle provides the opportunity to mix an outdoors and opulent travel weekend. WHERE TO STAY Seattle is home to numerous luxury hotels providing sophisticated and stylish accommodations in and around the city’s bustling downtown. In the past year, Seattle’s hotel offerings have grown substantially with nine new properties, including the State Hotel and The Sound Hotel Seattle which opened in early 2019 and the Hyatt Regency Seattle and Palihotel Seattle, which opened in late 2018.
ocated between the saltwater Puget Sound to the west and Lake Washington to the east, Seattle’s sea, rivers, forests, lakes and fields are abundant. The hilly city has over 5,540 acres of parkland and is home to the Olympic peninsulas along with the Olympic mountains lie to the west of Puget Sound and Mount Rainier the fourth highest peak in the contiguous US and can be seen from all areas of the city. Although Seattle is forever known as a rainy city, a fun fact is that it actually rains less in Seattle than in New York, but the constant fine mist through the months of November and March lead to one of the most picturesque green backdrops.
Defining luxury in Seattle since its opening in 1924, Fairmont Olympic Hotel melds classic elegance with mid-century modern room décor. After undergoing renovations in the mid-1980s and in 2016, the hotel has redefined sophistication in the Emerald City and added to its long-standing reputation as Seattle’s finest hideaway. Renovations saw all guest rooms and corridors to be updated with mid-century modern décor and contemporary artwork showcasing the Pacific Northwest. The hotel is also home to the Penelope & The Beauty Bar which offers the most advanced skin care and body treatments available and its signature restaurant The Georgian which offers afternoon tea (the only downtown Seattle dining option offering traditional afternoon tea service on weekends) along with breakfast, lunch and dinner; Shuckers oyster bar and much more.
And for those oenophiles, Washington is the second-largest producer of premium wine in the country, with more than 900 wineries across the state. Within its city limits, Seattle has over 25 urban wineries and even more tasting rooms inviting guests and locals to explore the robust offerings of Pacific Northwest’s wine. From the heart in SODO Urban Works that is home to nine wineries to its annual Taste Washington, the nation’s largest singleregion wine and food festival at the end of each

WHAT TO DO Pike Place Market - Over the past 40 years, one thing has remained true to one of the oldest continuously operated farmer’s markets in the U.S., it has remained a market place strictly for small businesses and purveyors. The six-level nine-acre historic district features fresh fish and produce stands, arts and crafts, ethnic groceries, gift stores and much more and welcomed its first expansion in the past 40 years in 2017. The new MarketFront connects the main arcade via the Desimone Bridge inviting 47 new day stall tables. Make sure to stop by Pike Place Fish Co. to see them throwing all types of fish, to popular vendors such as Pike Place Chowder and Beecher’s Handmade Cheese. A good way to get the history and into the heart of the market is by taking a curated small group food tour of Pike Place Market with Savor Seattle. Learn from their knowledgeable guides about the history of the bustling market while sampling bites from some of the market mainstays and newcomers, both delicious alike. For an extra special peek into the market, get up early and join for one of their VIP Early Access Tours. Space Needle - Synonymous with Seattle, the 605’ Space Needle soars high above the Seattle skyline and an ever-popular tourist destination. Built as the centerpiece of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, the Space Needle now features floor-to-ceiling glass observation level 520’ above ground with 360° views of the Seattle skyline Puget Sound and the Cascade and the Olympic Mountains. The newly reimagined viewpoint high in the sky also features The Loupe, the world’s first revolving glass floor. BOMBARDIER’S GLOBAL 8000 AN UNPARALLELED EXPERIENCE IN BUSINESS AVIATION | BY DELLVIN ROSHON WILLIAMS Another Bombardier aircraft is upon us, we think. Different from the ultra-long range Global 7500, the Global 8000 travel range is planned to increase by 300nm (555km) to 7,900 nautical miles (14,631 km); the Global 7500 is 33.8m (111ft) in length with a 16.6m cabin; the Global 8000, 31.2m and 13.9m respectively; and now connects some of the world’s most unprecedented city pairings: Los Angeles to Dubai, Sydney to Sao Paulo, Tokyo to San Juan. 66 Upscale Living Magazine |
B
ombardier’s flagship family of Global aircraft uniquely covers the large business jet category with six aircraft models, including its flagship ultra-long range Global 7500 aircraft (and now the Global 8000). The newest edition to the family will feature next generation fly-by-wire technology and a Bombardier Vision flight deck that blends cutting-edge avionics with exceptional ergonomics and aesthetics for optimal comfort and control. Development on the Global 8000 is still in the works. Pre-sales have not begun and the Montrealbased company is still assessing the market. Bombardier, however, have re-emphasized its commitment to bringing the aircraft to market. Stephen McCollough, Vice President of Engineering and Product Development, says, ‘’We are still exploring options on the Global 8000. There are a number of items we are working on with an eye on what that would be.’’ While activity on the Global 8000 is picking up, McCullough says it is “fair comment,” to suggest that the Global 8000’s specifications will change from their current guise as “taking a bit of cabin out for 200 extra nautical miles is not intuitively something that would be a differentiator.”
MAY 2019 www.upscalelivingmag.com
J E T S
The unique selling point of any Bombardier aircraft, however, is cabin design. One that weaves comfort, connectivity, innovation, and expert engineering into a seamless, ultra-long range experience. Here’s Bombardier Business Aircraft’s Industrial Design Manager, Tim Fagan. “The specification process for personalizing a Bombardier business aircraft to completion typically takes place over several meetings,” he says. “The Bombardier Business Aircraft team focus primarily on gathering information about the customer: their plans for the aircraft, frequent missions, city pairings, and how many passengers would typically be aboard.” Then there is Bombardier’s Nuage seat, the first new seat architecture in business aviation in thirty years. Bombardier’s Nuage seating architecture becomes key because it facilitates the kind of movement that reflects the desires, personal tastes, and lifestyles of their clientele. Nuage seating is the industry’s first new seating architecture in 30 years.
Designed to maximize comfort and relaxation on long-haul flights, Nuage introduces an all-new, ergonomically perfected deep recline position – unavailable on any other business aircraft. Unlike other aircraft seats where only the back pivots, pushing the body forward and leading to discomfort, Nuage dips the seat as the back is reclined, fully cradling the body and ensuring optimal comfort. Like the Global 7500, Global 8,000 will reach a top speed of Mach 0.925, will cruise at 0.85 with a capacity of up to 17 passengers and four crew members. Priced at $65 million, top-notch connectivity, functionality, comfort, layout, and aesthetics are impressively transformed into an extension of one’s personality, something the Ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) absolutely cannot live without. And when it finally comes to market, the Global 8000 will be more than a luxury business jet; it just may be the penultimate expression of exclusivity.

THE RESERVE CLUB GOLF BEYOND YOUR WILDEST DREAMS | BY TIM COTRONEO
68 Upscale Living Magazine |
MAY 2019 www.upscalelivingmag.com
G O L F
When The Reserve Club’s Golf Course in Indian Wells, CA, was built back in 1998, there was a shoot for the moon mentality that said, “What if we design and build a golf course that exceeds our members wildest dreams?”
T
he Reserve Developers, Bob Lowe, and Ted Lennon discussed choosing an acclaimed designer for their project, one who specialized in desert golf. A second “what if ” was envisioning a course that offered amazing views from every angle. That led to a search for the perfect site, and a golf course surrounded by not one, but four mountain ranges. The next level of dreaming tapped into the hidden desires of golfers everywhere, the desires that are rarely met. The developers pushed the envelope and made it a priority that The Reserve would not only be beautiful, but tee times would not be required. If that wasn’t enough, they added superb practice facilities that included a massive driving range along with three extra golf holes. CHECKING EVERY BOX Fast forward to today, and The Reserve Club’s Golf Course has checked every box. Just so you don’t think The Reserve members have gotten complacent over the past two decades, realize that they’ve recently celebrated a $10 million renovation to their clubhouse. The dreaming never stops in Indian Wells. Flashback to when The Reserve projections were first formulated, that’s when Tom Weiskopf and design partner Jay Moorish were selected as the golf architects who would bring the dream to life. As important as choosing the maestros to orchestrate The Reserve’s grand design was, the development site was even more paramount. The Reserve’s timing was impeccable. A 700-acre parcel framed by the Santa Rosa and the San Jacinto Mountains was purchased. This property offered breathtaking views that were suitable for framing. The setting blended within a pristine desert eco-system that offered photogenic elevations and vistas that stretched for miles. PLAYS LIKE A DREAM COME TRUE The 7000-yard, 18-hole course that members and guests play today is an ever-evolving dream come true. The Reserve woos golfers well before teeing it up on the Par 5, 510-yard, first hole. The jaunt over the bridge leading to the Club Village is a visual stunner. Reserve members burst their buttons showing off the refurbished 30,000-square-foot clubhouse that features a Tuscan stone exterior and glass rich interior reflecting the epic mountain views. The Reserve’s boundless imagination is also evident with a golfer’s first glimpse of the double-ended 382-yard driving range. The Reserve what if the mantra is on display with not one, not two, but three trophy holes. These Par 3, Par 4, and Par 5 golf holes are for practice, for lessons, and for playoffs during tournament play. It doesn’t take long for first-time visitors to realize The Reserve is a real-life golf dreamscape. If that’s not enough, your 18-hole round triggers something that is wonderfully unexpected. 69 Upscale Living Magazine |

THE QUIET, THE DETAIL, AND THE GRATITUDE The Reserve Golf Course is one of the quietest places on earth. The magnificence of the canyons and four neighboring mountain ranges generates a sense of peace that is hard to put into words. In fact, members comment that guests are often rendered speechless by their surroundings. To play golf in an environment in which Mother Nature is on display in all her glory is simply priceless. When asked about his impressions of how The Reserve Club’s Golf Course has evolved over the past two decades, course designer Weiskopf couldn’t help gushing a bit. “No matter how many times I visit, I always am impressed by the exclusive feeling of the setting and the attention to detail here,” Weiskopf said. Nowhere is this detail more evident than on The Reserve’s picturesque 17th hole. “On this 197-yard, Par 3, it was extremely difficult building the triple-tiered tee box. From each vantage point, golfers enjoy a separate and wonderful view. When I look back on the work that went into building those tee boxes and that green and then see the way it looks today, that’s gratifying,” Weiskopf recalled. A SENSE OF PLACE Gratitude is the perfect word to describe what Reserve members feel about one of the golf 70 Upscale Living Magazine |

community’s first hires. Lori Gavitt was working as a horticulturist at another club when she was approached by The Reserve just after the course opened in 1999. The Reserve team’s environmental game plan struck a nerve with Gavitt. She came on board after learning that coexisting with native desert, trees, and plants was part of The Reserve’s longterm vision. “Keeping the right plant in the right place is easier said than done. The Reserve didn’t want to look or feel like every other course,” Gavitt said. Gavitt’s nurturing green thumb is evident everywhere you look at this desert mountain slice of paradise. Gavitt pointed to a 15-foot Texas Mountain Laurel tree that is flourishing by the ninth green. “That tree started out as a potted plant next to the clubhouse. What you see at The Reserve is inspiring. It’s like watching a child grow,” Gavitt said. From the renovated clubhouse to the threetiered tee box, to the flourishing plant life that accents throughout, The Reserve is an everchanging work in progress. It’s amazing what can happen when you shoot for the moon and ask, “What if?” https://www.thereserveclub.com/club/scripts/ section/section.asp?NS=HP

HYBRID AIR VEHICLE’S
AIRLANDER 10
THE WORLD’S LARGEST AIRCRAFT | BY DELLVIN ROSHON

A I R C R A F T
B
uilt by British manufacturer Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV), the Airlander 10 is a hybrid helium airship with auxiliary wing and tail surfaces. The Airlander 10 flies using both aerostatic and aerodynamic lift, and is powered by four diesel engine-driven ducted propellers. The HAV 304 was originally built for the United States Army’s Long Endurance Multi-intelligence Vehicle (LEMV) programme. Its initial flight took place in 2012. In 2013, the LEMV project was canceled by the US Army. HAV then reacquired the airship and reassembled, modified and renamed the Airlander 10. Having received the necessary approvals and £7 million on Crowdfunding campaigns, in 2014 Airlander was ready to fly once again. Fast forward to an impressive 30-minute stint in the air, and the £25, 92m (302 ft) flying bum crashed in its second test flight. That was in 2016. Engineers now have something better in mind. Eight years after the initial build of the prototype, “Airlander challenges people to rethink the skies – that’s the driving force behind everything we do.” Mclennan intoned. “Air travel has become very much about getting from A to B as quickly as possible. What we’re offering is a way of making the journey a joy.”
HAV has suggested that the airship will fly again sometime shortly after 2020; entry into service could come as early as four years of order. “Our focus is now entirely on bringing the first batch of production-standard, type-certified Airlander 10 aircraft into service with customers,” said Stephen McGlennan, CEO of Hybrid Air Vehicles. With this in mind, HAV has now turned its eye to the high-end luxury market. According to Design Q, HAV’s collaborative partner on the project, the Airlander 10’s cabin is larger than most single-aisle aircraft. It can stay in the air on a three-day expedition with up to 19 passengers.
Some private aircraft manufacturers embody great design; others, engineering. Then, there are those who introduce radically new concepts couched in an otherwise old vocabulary. Such is the case with the Hybrid Air Vehicles HAV 304/Airlander 10, the world’s largest aircraft.
Airlander 10 can accommodate any number of layout designs, including a reception area, onboard catering, and flexible seating; the current configuration includes en-suite cabins; it flies much slower than conventional commercial aircraft; reaches an altitude of 6,100m (16,000 ft); has floor-to-ceiling windows, glass floors; and can land and take off on any flat surface, without an airport or runway. Unlike most airships, Airlander does not have a circular cross-section, because it has an elliptical shape with a contoured, flattened hull. Here’s Design Q’s CEO Howard Guy. “We love doing different things,” he says. “Our fantastic team of young designers relishing the opportunity to do something no one’s done before, to imagine a new concept and then to get into the detailed design of what this space will be.” “My team exploited the opportunity that Airlander 10 presents; we had a huge space to create an experience that makes no compromises. This is luxury like you’ve never known it – with the ability to go anywhere in the world.”

W
ith the introduction of Airlink’s direct route between Cape Town and Hoedspruit on the 98-seater Embraer 190 E-Jet from September 2018, travel between the city and bush has become so much simpler and seamless. On a Friday morning, my daughter and I are brimming with excitement as we will be taking flight from Cape Town International Airport in this extraordinary aircraft. As the first South African airline to acquire Embraer E-Jets, Airlink has been instrumental in providing passengers with the best air travel options. Roger Foster, CEO of Airlink says: “The unique performance characteristics of the E-Jet family enables Airlink to operate within a challenging environment, including short field and ‘hot and high’ operations, while managing capacity and providing for growth.” After a two hour and 20-minute flight, we land safely at Hoedspruit Airport, where we are collected for our road transfer to Saseka Tented Camp. Our arrival is met by the friendly staff at Saseka and we are shown to our impressive tented suite adjacent to the main area. Conceptualized and designed by Silvio Rech & Lesley Carstens Architecture and Design, the dream team was commissioned to bring to fruition an archetypal tent for each of the 200m2 tented suites, thus creating a juxtaposing of yesteryear with a modern twist. With 32 years’ experience in designing bush lodges, they set to work on nostalgia meets 21st-century design. This is evident in the romantic black muslin mosquito-netted draped beds, the silkiest bedding I have ever felt, the beautifully patterned ceilings, an open-plan bathroom with old-world-style tub, modern inside and outside shower, vintage styled mirrors, contemporary light fittings, floor-to-ceiling glass windows, stackable doors, a private pool, and air conditioning. Never far from the sights and sounds of nature, relaxing on your private sundeck is encouraged, allowing guests a true safari experience. Portraying the environs with a natural color palette, Silvio and Lesley looked at the indigenous landscape – the flora and fauna. “The camp is next to an actual watercourse, the surrounding vegetation is a typical riverine bush, featuring excellent examples of classic river trees like Jackalberry, Apple Leaf and Leadwood. Our imaginations were fueled by nature – hues of ivory, dark green, apple, sage and subtle flashes of pink echoing the characteristic tones of the flowers found in the bush,” says Lesley Carstens. The strikingly soft off-white color of the recycled, environmentally friendly flooring of both the tented suites and the public spaces is smooth and cool underfoot. This muted tone allows other signature furniture pieces and design elements to make a bold statement, while intrinsically linking it to the white sand of the riverbed.
It is time for lunch and we are treated to the most delectable tapasstyle food; we choose grilled calamari with smoked tomatoes, chicken lollipops, lip-smacking BBQ Ribs, and French fries. For dessert, I order the tasty fruit pavlova, consisting of meringue, berries and vanilla ice cream, while my daughter simply opts for two scoops of the delicious home-made vanilla ice cream. Should we take a nap? The pool looks too good to resist and after spending at least an hour splashing about, before we know it, it’s time for High Tea, followed by our first game drive. We are in the capable hands of field guide Kelwan Kaiser, simply known as Kel and tracker Moses Khoza. This afternoon, we veer off to the Western side of the reserve to see what we can find. Impalas are going about their business, while further afield, zebras are having a playful time. The sun has started setting and as Moses shines the spotlight, a scarred-face lion comes walking by. Back at camp, pre-dinner drinks are enjoyed in the dry riverbed, with lanterns illuminating our way. Dinner is served on the main deck and the food is absolutely delicious! Think a choice of starters – corn & coconut soup with lime & corn salsa; potato gnocchi, chakalaka, crispy leeks, roasted red onion & goats cheese cream or quail & pork belly, grape & almond salsa, smoked raisin puree, mustard dressing. A palate cleanser of mango sorbet is followed by the main course – lamb lion & belly, yellow pepper puree, braised turnip & ashed brinjal; kabeljou, tomato puree, fennel, radish, quinoa & chive oil; roasted broccoli, asparagus, butternut, feta & tzatziki. Dessert is crème Brulee, orange biscotti, grapefruit & mocha milkshake, ice cream or a cheese platter. Time for sleep as the day’s activities have taken their toll and all my daughter and I want to do is retire to bed. But not before a cleansing shower with the oversized and wonderfully fragrant Godding&Godding handcrafted pure silk and sandalwood body wash. Sleep comes easily as the soft silky bedding sends us straight to dreamland and I momentarily awake from the sound of a lion roaring in the distance. The next morning, Kel is adamant to find the lions attached to the previous night’s roaring, but we only track them down the following morning. Today, we spot an African fish eagle perched above the dam, warming up in the sun’s first rays, a leopard tortoise, a giraffe feeding on some greenery and a young, skittish leopard lying at the base of a tree where he stashed his kill. The tree in which he hoisted the kill is so small, we are surprised when Moses puts his hand up to gesture Kel to stop the vehicle and go closer to see whose kill it is. After a hearty breakfast, we spend our day in and around our plush tented suite, enjoying what the lodge and nature have to offer. With a very filling and scrumptious lunch out of the way, my daughter and I hope to see some nocturnal animals later tonight. As we turn the 75 Upscale Living Magazine | may

corner, a hyena is standing in the middle of the road. Not far from where he is lurking, we hear a loud snarl. A leopard! We grab our cameras, wondering what we are about to see. He is lying right next to the road, disemboweling the wildebeest he must have just captured. Sightings like these are not for the squeamish as both leopard and hyena want to have their fill. Even though leopard made the effort to catch his meal, hyena will pounce at the opportunity for scrap or even steal the entire carcass. Leopard is having none of it, standing protectively over his dinner. Moses shines the spotlight on this beautiful creature, his rosetted coat gleaming in comparison to the dead wildebeest. He crouches down, takes a bite and looks us straight in the eye, sending cold shivers down our spines. The following morning, we learn that he is no longer where he was the night before and there is nothing hanging from a tree. Sorry, Mr. Leopard, we hope you were able to eat enough before the hyenas made off with your prized possession. Vegas Now
What and Where to See, Do, Eat and Stay in Sin City By David Danzig
M
ore than just a city, more than just an experience, Las Vegas is its own living, breathing organism; a shapeshifting pulse of energy that morphs into something new and different each day and night. Indeed, this is a travel destination that feels perfectly suited for anything you desire and it’s constantly changing. Here are some must do’s of the moment: SEE Shows happen Vegas that could only happen in Vegas, for both sheer scale and spectacle. Start with a little magic from Mat Franco, the immensely likable 31-year-old magician who won NBC’s America’s Got Talent. Franco performs a nightly show that feels grounded and real; as opposed to disappearing the Statue of Liberty or an airplane, it’s more “real magic,” the sort of sleight of hand where you are certain you can figure it out...but you can’t. It’s just that good. Just relax and enjoy your stunning disbelief at The LINQ Hotel & Casino in The Mat Franco Theater. Almost as fittingly bizarro as Las Vegas itself, The Blue Man Group, an iconic piece of performance-art centered around 3 blue musical mutes, resides fittingly inside the luminous pyramid of the Luxor Hotel and Casino. Staged inside a custom theater designed for maximum audio/visual effect, the performance celebrates humanity through music, technology, human connection, and humor. There is nothing on earth like this show. I saw the show in New York City back in the 1990s and it has evolved significantly since then. A guaranteed crowd-pleaser for any age.
with wraparound windows and find yourself standing at the bottom of one of the seven natural wonders of the world in the morning and then back poolside or at a blackjack table by the afternoon. EAT With more award-winning chefs per-capita than just about anywhere in the world, food tourism in Las Vegas is just about as big as gambling. Any visit to Las Vegas demands a steak dinner; you will be hard pressed to find a better one that at Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House. This Vegas institution just off the strip just underwent a $2 million dollar renovation and feels Old School yet fresh and modern at the same time. Start with seared Hudson Valley foie gras or charred octopus and move into some of their magnificent dry-aged steaks like the 32 oz. “Double Eagle” 45-day dryaged double-bone prime ribeye, a behemoth of flavorful marbled beauty. Also save room for their signature Butter Cake with butter pecan ice cream, one of the greatest non-chocolate desserts known to man.
DO
For a Big Fat Greek Dinner, dive into Estiatorio Milos, arguably the most renowned Greek restaurant in the world. Start with the signature Milos Special, paper-thin zucchini and eggplant that are fried and then stacked up and served with housemade tzatziki sauce and graviera cheese saganaki. Then peruse the in-house seafood market for your flown-in-directlyfrom-the-Mediterranean fish. Hyper-fresh red mullet, dorade and bronzini are then perfectly cooked and some then fileted tableside. Sit on the terrace overlooking the strip, accented by romantic lanterns and a unique misting system during the summer for the full experience.
While the delights of the strip are beyond compare, sometimes you just need to get out of town. Book a flight with Papillion Tours, the oldest Grand Canyon helicopter sightseeing company, and within a short time of leaving your hotel, you can find yourself 4000 feet below the rim of the Grand Canyon on a private plateau sipping on champagne. Soar over Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, and Grand Canyon West in a state-of-the-art EC130 helicopter
In a sea of all-you-can-eat scenarios of Vegas, nothing compares to the Wicked Spoon in the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, a buffet bacchanal not only with epic portions but top-tier gourmet quality. Brunches are epic here: red velvet pancakes, eggs benedict and French toast with Chantilly cream are but a few of the seemingly limitless options. Grab the bottomless beverage package for an additional charge and sip mimosas along with your feast (for a 2-hour period). Hang around for dinner and devour
sushi, carved meats like pork shoulder as well as table after table of multi-ethnic noshes and a legendary dessert spread. Not only is Chef Jose Andres a 3-time James Beard Award Winner but also a Nobel Prize nominee for his work with Puerto Rico after Hurricane Irma. With China Poblano, Chef Andres decided to brilliantly offer Chinese and Mexican food, noodles and tacos, side-by-side on the same menu. This is not a forced fusion but a delightful co-existence of great dishes in their traditional expression where one moment you can be devouring tableside guacamole and a blue corn quesadilla, the next showing on steamed Chinese BBQ pork buns and fried shrimp won tons. These are two cuisines you’d never imagine had much in common until you experience them executed flawlessly and served in sequential courses. The hardest part is choosing between the churros or the mango sticky rice for dessert. Until recently, Blue Ribbon in Las Vegas was a sushi-centric concept but now it’s transformed into an homage to the hipster brasserie motif that made the original in New York City a legend. Residing in the Cosmopolitan Hotel, the new menu features an eclectic mix of global comfort food delights from a Chinese Pu Pu platter to Russian caviar to matzoh ball soup to paella to their iconic fried chicken. And just because it’s pure over-the-top Las Vegas, be sure to order the “The Cosmopolitan,” an epic cold seafood tower served with its own bottle of crisp champagne. STAY Like a tranquil oasis set in the heart of Sodom and Gamora, The Four Seasons Las Vegas hides in plain sight, floating above the melee and discreetly occupying the upper floors of the Mandalay Bay Hotel at the end of the strip. Enter the hotel through its private exterior entrance or go in right off the casino floor through covertly labeled entrances with your specially coded key. Up in the rarefied air of the top floors, enjoy sumptuous accommodations and bespoke service while drinking in birds-eye views of the twinkling lights of the strip and the vast expanse of the Mojave Desert.

CHEF OLIVER LANGE
of Zuma on Creativity, Excellence and Perfection | By Rahim B. Kanani
In an exclusive interview with Chef Oliver Lange, Corporate Executive Chef of Zuma, we discussed his early experiences in the kitchen, culinary philosophy, the process of creation and more.
my hands on the stove and eating the leftover cake mix! In all seriousness, I have always felt comfortable in the kitchen. When my family and friends come together around the dining table it makes my day. I love what I do, which is the most important thing for me. I need to put my soul into my work.
A
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PHILOSOPHY OR APPROACH TO FOOD?
sophisticated twist on the traditional Japanese Izakaya style of informal eating and drinking, Zuma has 11 venues globally and 3 pop up locations. Chef Lange has been with Zuma since January 2015, when he joined the award-winning, flagship London location as Head Chef. He then took over as Executive Chef of Zuma New York in September 2015. Now leading all three US locations including New York, Miami and Las Vegas as the Corporate Executive Chef, Oliver is spearheading Zuma’s newest location coming to Boston this spring. WHEN YOU STARTED YOUR CULINARY JOURNEY, LOOKING BACK, WAS THERE A MOMENT OR EXPERIENCE THAT TRIGGERED YOUR INTEREST IN THE PROFESSION? Yes, absolutely. Sushi Chefs inspired me then and do so to this day. Their dedication, precision, and respect for detail and produce triggered my interest in specializing in Japanese cuisine.
Respect, passion, and dedication. I love to use seasonal ingredients and try to handle food with consideration—with as little wastage as possible. Fundamentally, I like to see the joy that good hospitality and food brings. WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION FROM TO CONSTANTLY CREATE AND INNOVATE? I think about food all the time. I even associate seemingly unrelated items to food and take them as inspiration for dishes or recipes. My wife Megan inspires my cooking as she is an incredible baker and has a wonderful way of putting flavors together. I also research a lot and try to keep up with best practices and trends in the industry. I try to evolve our kitchens without changing the ethos or identity of the Zuma brand.
THROUGHOUT YOUR CULINARY CAREER, AT WHAT POINT DID YOU REALIZE THAT YOU TRULY EXCELLED AS A CHEF?
WALK ME THROUGH THE PROCESS OF WHEN YOU HAVE A NEW IDEA OR AN INSPIRATION FOR A NEW DISH. HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT TAKING THAT IDEA FROM YOUR MIND TO THE PLATE?
Since childhood, I loved being in the kitchen with my mother making food. I thought I was an excellent helper even at that age—burning
I start with a key ingredient or technique that I would like to showcase. I try to think back to the dishes we have produced in the past to
see if I can draw inspiration from them. We encourage our teams to work together on new ideas and recipes. The process is very collaborative. Sometimes the development of a dish can take a month, or it can take six months. The most important thing to remember is to never give up as there are always failures along the way. HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN SUCH A HIGH BAR OF CONSISTENCY, EXCELLENCE, AND PRECISION? We have great training programs and team development across all Zuma restaurants both in the US and globally. We have upwards of 50 chefs in each of our restaurants and we have to ensure that those individuals are given the opportunity to grow and learn on a daily basis. This has always been the ethos of our founder, Rainer Becker. IS THERE SUCH A THING AS THE PERFECT DISH? Everyone has a different palate, but for me, perfection comes from the quality of the product, not how it looks or how it’s plated. Upon visiting Japan for the first time, the taste of strawberry and my initial dalliance with sea urchin were the definition of perfection. Simplicity is perfection. Rahim B. Kanani is the author of A WEALTH OF INSIGHT: The World’s Best Chefs on Creativity, Leadership, and Perfection (April 2019, Black Truffle Press).

MB&F HOROLOGICAL MACHINE No9 “FLOW” | BY JARONE ASHKENAZI
Inspired by the dynamic profiles of automotive and aviation mid-century design, MB&F presents the Horological Machine N°9 ‘Flow’. From design to fruition the timepiece took four years taking cues from their popular Thunderbolt (driver watch concept) horological machine. The hours and minutes are read from a gauge on the side of the watch with two reversed cones on the side, designed to look like a jet engine.
