F E A T U R E You are known for such a recognizable aesthetic whether you are wearing a gorgeous bohemian dress or a crisp pants suit, your look is always tailored and accessorized beautifully. Why is it important to have a signature style? I think it's important to take the time to cultivate how you want to look and feel everyday by experimenting over time. Having a signature style is your way of saying who are without having to speak. Once you have found your personal style it becomes effortless in a sense and makes the getting dressed process much more efficient and less stressful! What is a good starting point when trying to establish a signature look? I think a great starting point to establishing your own signature style is to look to someone whose style you admire. Whether it be a celebrity, friend or coworker. Look at pictures online and immerse yourself in your icon’s style. After you've done the research, you can look back to your current wardrobe and find pieces that you already have. This will help you know exactly what you need to shop for in order to complete your look. Ultimately you will know what’s working based on feedback from friends and family who are the most honest with you. Choose the looks or style that makes you feel like the most confident version of yourself. You have such a presence, and always seem so pulled together with a calming elegance. What is your favorite self-care ritual? My self-care is so rare! Honestly being home with my boys after a long day of work brings me the most happiness. Or a staycation at the Hotel Bel Air for a quick getaway. Any full day and night and staying in my bathrobe with my family is a perfect day for me. Sleep and spa are not a huge part of my life unfortunately, but I dream to do more in the future. My quick at home fixes are hydrating masks and tons of eye and face oils and serums at night and in the morning. Boston and New York in winter - what are a few key pieces to help us survive the cold, dark days with style? Velvet, turbans, capes? Cashmere wraps, chunky scarfs and faux fur coats are some of my favorite pieces to layer on in order to survive the cold, dark days while staying true to signature style. I also turn to a uniform of thigh high boots with stylish oversized sweaters and long chic coats I’ve collected over the years, both vintage and designer. I’m always inspired by the connection between fashion and interiors. How have you made your home resonate with you and your family? I approach my home decor very much like my personal style. I like to create a feeling of effortless glamour and always have it be comfortable but chic down to the last detail. I like to invest in the core items like sofas and tables and keep them some16 Upscale Living Magazine |

what neutral in fabric and color. I always add interest by using dramatic throw blankets and pillows and incredible lighting to create the style of the room. My favorite design elements are usually animal prints, sheepskin rugs and colorful fashion and art books. We want our home to feel welcoming to guests and always be a special place to entertain our friends and family. What is a favorite space in your home and a piece of art or decor that gives you infinite inspiration? I have several favorite spaces for different parts of my life...I love to disappear into my home office when I need to really focus and have alone time to work and get inspired without interruption. My boys’ rooms are so special and dreamlike which makes story time at bedtime so peaceful and calming. I love the more formal white living room accented with incredible artwork and Missoni pillows for accents and the marble fireplace we use a lot in the winter. My family room has a very 70s mid-century vibe, entirely wood paneled and low couches and floor pillows for total comfort, once again accented with Hermes and Missoni blankets and pillows for color.

We spend so much time together in this room during parties and watching movies with friends and family throughout the year.

Depending on the time of year, you can really dress it up with accessories and candles around it on the table.

I love the hosting tips in your book Living in Style, especially the concept of ‘a table is a runway’ and how you use home fragrance to create ambiance throughout the home. Along with flowers and music, fragrance really sets the mood for a party or night in. Try using different scents in the main gathering area and in the bathrooms. Depending on the type of party and time of day, some of my favorites scents are Sandalwood, Amber, Fig, Tuberose and Lavender. A tip: just be mindful not to choose overwhelming scents as people respond differently to fragrance, so I always choose more mild natural candles. My favorites are form Eric Buterbaugh.

Why were you inspired to create Box of Style? I created Box of Style to be able to curate and style so many women everywhere with special items they didn't know they wanted or needed but are so excited to receive! Utilizing my many years as a stylist and curator, I wanted to share that knowledge with everyone!

Do you have a go-to recipe for a last-minute couples gathering? I take so much pride in my ability to make a beautiful charcuterie board as the possibilities are endless! I think a colorful centerpiece of cheese, fruit, nuts and meats and crudité is so chic and always a crowd pleaser! Always a great last-minute addition to any couples gathering.

What can we expect from winter Box of Style? My favorite thing about the Box of Style is that each piece is intended to be layered into your existing wardrobe and worn for any and every occasion, day or night. This Winter Box of Style includes so many of my favorite things I would want to be gifted this season or give to anyone in my life! 

PATRICK GRANT Savile Row Tailor & Sewing Bee Spy! | BY ANGELA SARA WEST

Beginning to take pride of place at the forefront of the British and global menswear stage, prestigious Savile Row tailor and award-winning fashion designer Patrick Grant rejuvenated the fortunes of Norton & Sons, resurrected ready-to-wear label E. Tautz, and has recently been working with English luxury fashion brand J. Barbour & Sons Ltd. as Creative Director of their Beacon Heritage line.

H

e talks to Angela Sara West about his booming businesses, resuming his role as a judge on BBC Two’s next buzzing series of The Great British Sewing Bee and his favorite Fashion Week. Always well suited and booted and with a passion for fashion since childhood, style icon and star of TV’s The Great British Sewing Bee Patrick Grant never fails to look incredibly stylish. “I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t obsessed with looking smart,” he tells me. “I remember being really proud of my uniform on my first day of school. In my teens, my walls were covered with pages from Vogue and Elle. I used to spend whole days in second-hand and charity shops, trying to find pieces to recreate outfits from the men’s fashion pages.”

He started sewing at school. “I just did simple alterations, and properly learned to sew when I started at Norton & Sons.” With a meticulous eye for detail and fantastic fabric-handling skills, he’s also quite mean with a sewing machine. “But I’m a clothes designer, not a great maker. I have brilliant staff who do the sewing.”

A tailor-made simple style Describing his own impeccable style as “simple”, he has numerous style icons and favorite designers. “I love men whose character shines through their clothes, like David Hockney or Jarvis Cocker. I loved Lee Alexander McQueen. He was the rarest talent and the loveliest man. There are so many great designers in London right now… Christopher Kane, Roksanda, Erdem, Molly Goddard, Simone Rocha, Craig Green, Charles Jeffrey…” No business like sew business Edinburgh-born Patrick studied Materials Science and Engineering at University and then worked in manufacturing in the engineering and technology sector. After a brief stint in marketing, he studied for an MBA at the internationally-renowned Saïd Business School at Oxford University. It was there that he found his calling, under “Businesses For Sale” in an old copy of the Financial Times. An ad offering a venerable Savile Row tailoring house caught his eye and the rest, as they say, is tailor-made history...

With a background in engineering and technology, why go down the sewing route? “I had never planned to move into fashion, but I had always loved handmade things, historic brands and men’s style. Purely by chance, I found out that Norton & Sons was for sale. It sat perfectly at the intersection of all of these things.” In 2005, he bought the failing familyowned business and transformed the struggling niche business into a phenomenallysuccessful brand. By focusing on its heritage and increasing innovation, the once-ailing company now efficaciously fuses the old with the new, retaining its traditional history, complemented by contemporary highend offerings. A successful Savile Row tailor Established in 1821 by Walter Norton as tailors to “the Gentlemen of the City of London”, Norton & Sons was originally located on The Strand. Continuing to thrive in the 20th century, it then incorporated the celebrated Savile Row houses, Hammond & Co, J. Hoare & Co, E. Tautz and Todhouse Reynard & Co.

Radiating a rich history, the firm gained eminence as a sporting tailor, making sharply-cut garments, from dinner suits to racing silks for Europe’s sporting and military elite. Along with King Edward VII and other UK royals, the business boasts being proud tailors to the royal households of Europe and three US Presidents. A young Winston Churchill was a big fan of “breeches from Tautz”, while other illustrious clients over the years include Alfred Hitchcock, the explorer Wilfred Thesiger and Cary Grant. Before Patrick took over the reins as Creative Director, the company had attempted to diversify by selling guns and offering sporting tours alongside its high-quality garments. Patrick re-concentrated the business on tailoring and within a few short years, tripled annual revenue to nearly £1 million. On purchasing Norton & Sons, Patrick also gained the rights to the name Hammond & Co., bringing all the brands together. Hammond & Co. has proved one of the most successful designer projects for Debenhams after Patrick relaunched it as a diffusion menswear line exclusively with the store in 2012. He relaunched the defunct Nortons subsidiary, Oxford Street-based E. Tautz (famous for its sports and military wear and for inventing the ‘Knickerbocker’ breeches) in 2009 as a ready-to-wear brand and showcased it at Fashion Week 2010. The re-imagined label, which is more experimental than the Nortons line, transformed British men’s style, for which Patrick was awarded ‘Menswear Designer of the Year’ at the 2010 British Fashion Awards. With his unique flair and precise craftsmanship, combined with an inherent sense of commercial awareness and business nous, Patrick is now at the forefront of fashion. “How does it feel to own a piece of prestigious Savile Row? “I feel very proud that I’ve managed to make modest successes of these brands, and have done so with integrity and honesty and in a way that, hopefully, is sustainable for the long term. They all have wonderful and unique histories and characters.” His ethos? “I work very hard, I care very deeply about the product, how it’s made, what it’s made from and by whom.” 20 Upscale Living Magazine |

Accolades & runways Other accolades include Retailer of the Year at the 2008 Scottish Fashion Awards and winner of the 2015 British Fashion Council/GQ Designer Menswear Fund. Patrick has also appeared in ‘best dressed’ lists, including GQ’s 50 Best Dressed Men, being named in Esquire magazine’s Most Stylish Men in the World, and included in the Business of Fashion 500 index of the most influential people in global fashion. As a massive influencer, he has also appeared in both Who’s Who and Debrett’s People of Today. In 2013, Patrick was made an Honorary Professor at Glasgow Caledonian University’s School of Business and Society, in 2016, he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) while in 2017, he was awarded an honorary degree by Heriot-Watt University. What does this avid follower of fashion love most about styling runway shows at London’s Fashion Week? “It’s a great part of the fashion process. I always have the outfits in my mind’s eye as we’re designing and developing the collections, but it’s really something when they all come together. I usually take about a week, starting with a rough first go, all the outfits on hangers, then

F A S H I O N I’ll leave it a day before coming back and putting them on our model and making a second cut at it. Then, I will usually have one last go, fine tuning every look, thinking about the order in which they come through. It’s fun!” Inspirational travels The charming tailor says he sources inspiration from “everywhere” at all times. “Art, film, museums, books, nature, bus seats, tube floors… I keep my eyes and my mind constantly open.” Having spent a lot of time living abroad and travelling, the celebrated tailor’s overseas’ travels also influence his work. “Time spent abroad is always inspiring. I like to walk through cities and ride the bus or the tube. I love local museums, big and small. I’ve been lucky to travel extensively in Europe, Africa and Asia and this is constantly creeping into my work, both subtly and overtly, from ancient Magyar costume to Japanese shibori dying.” It’s… TV Sewtime! Judging the Sewing Bee Patrick is a regular fixture on TV and radio as a commentator on British fashion, clothing and textile industries. He has also contributed to several major TV documentaries, including Savile Row, Harris Tweed and The Perfect Suit. With filming now finished for the next series of The Great British Sewing Bee, there’s a big buzz in the air of the needlework world as the quest to find Britain’s best home sewer begins and viewers count down the days to see this year’s amateur contestants come into the fold and reveal how they measure up. Patrick resumes his role as a much-loved, fastidious judge (for which he was nominated for the 2017 National Television Awards), this year alongside resident expert judge, Esme Young, and new host, Joe Lycett. What does Patrick love most about the popular BBC Two show and what can we expect from the next series? “I love all of it. I love the contestants, their passion, their humour and their camaraderie. I’ve loved working with Claudia and am already loving working with Joe. And Esme is a force of nature, she’s 21 Upscale Living Magazine |

F A S H I O N The tailor, the suit & the wardrobe If you’re wondering what’s in his wardrobe, wonder no more… Patrick reveals his current staples fit with his simple style. “For me, right now, it’s grey trousers, navy jumpers, and oversized chinos and work shirts. I’ve never been out of love with the suit, but I’m very bored with the skinny look.” His most treasured suit? “I have a dinner suit that was my father’s that I’ve always loved. It’s been with me for 30 years and was with my dad for about the same before me.” What’s in store for the fashion industry?

amazing. We’ve set lots of great new challenges and have a great new week focusing on one of the huge issues facing the world of clothing right now, something that I personally feel hugely passionate about.” As we get set for another spectacular small-screen sew down, are there any funny behind-the-seams stories that have happened to Patrick on Sewing Bee that have had him in stitches? “Lots, but I can’t possibly tell you. You’ll have to come on the show.” Patrick is all about great garments, celebrating individual craftspeople and British home-grown manufacturing, and encouraging people to start making clothes again so our home industry can rebuild itself. With a huge rise in the numbers now making their own garments, does he think people are taking much more interest in, and are better informed about, the clothes they wear and their quality? “Many are but, sadly, still far too many people treat shopping as a pastime and clothing as disposable. Our consumption is out of control and we need to change, but I think home sewers are very much leading the way in this.” The Community Clothing Project With a pattern emerging of people picking up a needle and thread and trying sewing for size, Patrick recently embarked on another exciting project to encourage uptake and rekindle the craft, in his new role as co-chairman of Future Textiles, part of the Prince’s Foundation. “It’s both a great honour and a great challenge, and something I’m already getting stuck into!” In 2015, Patrick purchased another ailing business, clothing manufacturer and sewing factory, Cookson & Clegg, and launched the social enterprise Community Clothing in response to the extreme challenges facing the British clothing and textile manufacturing industry. The new not-forprofit project is proving the perfect fit, earning Patrick much praise from across the political spectrum. How’s his initiative going? “Happily and fantastically! Nearly two years in, we’re already selling a lot of great clothing, creating a lot of work, and we know from the wonderful emails and comments we get that our customers appreciate what we’re doing. We have lots of beautiful womenswear in development for Community Clothing, which we hope will be ready for next spring.”

So, no more tightly-tailored suits for Patrick it ‘seams’. What other changes has he witnessed in the fashion industry recently and how does he see it evolving? “Sustainability, ethics and traceability are all big issues in the fashion world that have only really become hot topics in the last decade, and they’re only going to get hotter. Fashion is a three-trillion-dollar industry and the world’s second worst polluter. It has to change.” Top tips from a top tailor! With the trend for tailored looks and the return to improved standards of dressmaking looking set to continue, what are this Savile Row superstar tailor’s tips for readers looking to become high-end tailors? “It’s hard… there are only a small handful of places to learn on Savile Row and places don’t come up in any structured way. There are accredited bespoke tailoring courses which are a good starting point. The Savile Row Bespoke Association, of which most of the good houses are members, has details on the website. The UK has only a couple of tailoring factories, and I don’t know how many training places they offer.” Home makeovers Patrick has taught a couple of other crafts in the past. “I spent two summers working on a summer camp in California teaching pottery and crafts. We did all sorts, native American crafts like moccasin making and weaving dream catchers... I also love to paint.” The king of threads recently made his first foray into interior design, collaborating with LG SIGNATURE to design an installation of cuttingedge home technology at last year’s Esquire Townhouse with Dior event. Are there any more interior design projects in the works? “At one stage, I wanted to be architect, and it was great fun to work on the LG lounge. It was great that it won a prize, too. The only other project in the pipeline is one of my own, on a derelict house I’ve bought near our factory in the Forest of Bowland.” So there’s a new home in store for this successful Savile Row tailor… although the sew must, of course, go on! --------------------------------------------------------------SUGGESTED FACTBOX The Great British Sewing Bee returns to our TV screens on BBC Two in early 2019: www.bbc.co.uk/sewingbee | Norton & Sons: www.nortonandsons.co.uk E. MOUNTAIN LAKES RESIDENCE KNOF Design Completes Elegant Family Home in Mountain Lakes

KNOF Design has created an elegant, colourful and layered interiors scheme for a private family home that merges a recently married couple’s tastes, in the form of classic French interiors and the geometry of the art deco period. The new scheme is for a 6-bed, 6,500 sq ft property in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, which is part of a 4,000-strong lakeside community located within the Manhattan commuter belt.

“The answer to the latter challenge was very much to treat both influences with a light touch”, Susan commented, “so that the scheme avoided clashes of style or any kind of obvious, themed look and maintained a cohesive feel throughout. The two preferences are present instead in material choices, such as the use of slick mirrored furniture, particularly in the master bedroom, strong geometric framed furniture in some instances, glamorous chandeliers and distressed timber finishes.”

BACKGROUND

DESIGN APPROACH

The project also had an emotional aspect for Susan Knof, Founder and Creative Director of KNOF Design, as one half of the client couple is a long-time friend.

The house is arranged so that it opens up immediately on entry into two formal rooms, with the formal living room to the right and the formal dining room to the left, both are clearly visible one from the other. The spaces were designed with a similar, linking palette of colour and materials, including strong blue tones, textured finishes and layering, as well as furniture with a distinctly luxurious feel. Subtle added glamour comes from dynamic, large-scale floral wallcoverings, metallic finishes in gold and brass and standout chandelier lighting.

“It was inspiring and special to know how significant the new home was for my friend, representing, as it does, the creation of a solid base for her new life chapter”, Susan Knof commented. The scheme wasn’t just an interior for the couple, however, but also for their collective six children from their first marriages, as well their newborn baby son. “Several of the older children are full-grown and were only likely to be visiting at weekends or during holidays”, Susan added. “Nevertheless, key spaces, such as the dining and family rooms, had to be furnished for the possibility of all nine family members being present at the same time”. The project was a logistical challenge additionally for the design company Founder, who splits her work life between London and Miami. With additional current projects in London, Sofia and West Africa, this is something of an ongoing challenge for SusanKnof, solved by being very much on the ball in terms of time zones and also having a great international array of key suppliers and teams. Good communication is also key, of course, as well as, in this instance, the pre-existing designer-client relationship and knowing her friend’s tastes and style extremely well. BRIEF The interior’s brief was fairly minimal, with the couple entrusting Susan Knof with the creation of a scheme that would work with the property’s scale and dimensions, the family’s logistical requirements and their personal tastes, including “her” preference for French furniture and “his” for the lines and geometry of art deco.

DESIGN WALK-THROUGH Both formal receiving rooms also feature highly polished existing timber flooring, with new overlaid rugs. In the formal living room, the rug is by Eloise and is a lightly patterned abstract-style rug in soft blues and greys, hand-knotted in India using denim bamboo silk. The strikingly bold rug in the formal dining room is a vintage piece in rich blue patterns, sourced from ABC Carpet & Home in New York. Both rooms also feature stunning woven silk wall coverings from Phillip Jeffries. In the formal living room, the Tirreno Blue Amalfi Silk wall covering is used, whilst a large-scale wild meadow flower print in the formal dining room is the WISH Bright in silk linen. The dining room also features timber half-panelling on the walls and this helps to balance out this strong print and prevents it from overwhelming the room. The curtains in the formal living room are a linen and viscose crystal molecule fabric from Chase Erwin and furniture includes a buttoned Cambridge Sofa in tufted, vintage indigo velvet and two elegant Miles leather chairs in Milano stone leather, with brushedbrass frames, sourced from Restoration Hardware. Soft cushions are a playful mix of metallic fabrics, with gold or detailed beading. Some were purchased whilst Susan Knof had four specially made from interesting fabrics sourced to complement the scheme. 29 Upscale Living Magazine |

A striking circular coffee table with a polished-brass frame and black marble top is the Camilla by OKL, whilst a narrow, Margo Scalloped Console against the back wall is in hand-forged steel with a gold leaf coating and mirrored glass top and was manufactured to bespoke dimensions to fit the wall recess perfectly. A white globe Flos light sits on top. The third table in the room is a striking lily pad “Justina” incidental table, with a gold finish and an artfully bent base. Two Theo drum stools by Kelly Wearstler sit alongside the console table and are made up of a burnished brass base and custom bouclé fabric with subtle blue flecking, whilst a two-part nest of tables alongside the sofa is in contrasting shades of faux shagreen in white and charcoal on an antique brass frame. Behind, a Visual Comfort Studio Aspen floor lamp has a natural paper shade and a gold-leafed organic tree-shaped base, continuing the natural references, interesting shapes and metallic finish themes in the room. “For the walls, I was given access to artwork that already belonged to the clients, Susan Knof explained. ‘Luckily, the portrait of the reclining lady above the console couldn’t have been a better choice. Her green and blue outfit fits perfectly with the scheme and the antique frame adds contrast to the room’s contemporary furnishings.’ A grand piano already belonging to the couple is positioned to the rear left side of the room, whilst the final striking piece of furniture is a stunning hand-painted screen in silvered leaves. This floor-standing screen, from Argento, features four panels and is decorated sans traverse with Japanese flying cranes, inspired by a Japanese original. The decoration includes crushed eggshell inlays and was hand-tooled with gold leaf. ‘This stunning piece serves as a backdrop to the two armchairs and also ensures the wall has its own presence in the room and isn’t bland,’ SusanKnof commented, ‘balancing out the fireplace on the back wall and the large windows directly opposite. Also, beyond this functional rationale, everyone involved in the project also pretty much fell in love with the screen at first sight and so it had to be included!’ The formal dining room has at its centre a Torano marble rectangular dining table with a white marble top and burnished brass base from Restoration Hardware. The eight accompanying dining chairs are Wexler Square chairs in indigo velvet with matching burnished brass bases, with two additional Wexler Barrelback chairs at the table ends. The blue not only works with the vintage rug in the room, but also references the blue velvet sofa in the forming living room. Blue is picked up again in the new carpet up the stair to the first floor, which has a steel grey-blue pattern with leather edging, sourced from Stark Carpets. The eye is also drawn to the back of the formal dining room and its standout piece of furniture: a backlit, gold-leafed Preview-A gilt display cabinet, with an LED-lit, ivory painted interior and four framed and glass-inset adjustable shelves, plus a striking scalloped gold pattern to the front of the glass doors, used to display the couple’s wedding crystal.

(the Curiosity Crendenza by HFH), whilst white lacquer tray tables with antique natural brass accents alongside, by Jonathan Adler, add a more contemporary note. Curtains are once again a linen and viscose crystal molecule fabric by Chase Erwin. The third major living space is a more informal and intimate family room, which looks out onto the back lawns and where a quieter and more neutral scheme can be seen. The plan here had to be very functional to encompass all the family at leisure time and is centred around an enormous sofa: the Poliform Bristol Sofa designed by JeanMarie Massaud and upholstered in Paris Avorio with integrated table in Cenere oak.

Lighting in the room is glamorous and dramatic and includes an overhead Soscik chandelier, made up of swoops of interlacing metal chain over a nickel-plated frame. Stream wall lights by Christian Lava for Terzani to either side were handmade in Florence and Sicily and feature metal chain that appears to float down from an undulating nickel-plated frame in cascading tiers.

There are lots of tonal greys in this room, including light linen curtains; Phillip Jeffries Canvas Linen wall coverings in Silver Mink and matching painted recessed panels in the ceiling. Furniture includes a Chandelier Longue Chair by Cierre Imbottiti, purchased through DDC in New York, which is a feature piece, handmade with capitonné upholstery cushions on a supporting metal frame and designed Stefano Conficconi.

To ensure the room could encompass both with the gold leaf and brass finishes of the furniture and the silver metal of the chandelier, Susan Knof ’s final choice was an original, art deco, verre églomisé silvered and gilt wall mirror with a bevelled edge plate that uses and unifies both colours of metal. Below it is a washed dark blue console with gold accents

Two Iron Scaffold leather stools, inspired by a mid-20th-century design, with supple leather seats atop a tubular steel base, feature sloping wings and a low camelback and are located to either side of the bar, which takes the form of a leather trunk. mered brass railheads. The lower doors of the bar open onto a stainlesssteel interior and are fitted with a shelf for bottles and barware, whilst the hinged top lifts and the front panel drops down, creating a handy spot for crafting cocktails and pouring wine. A mirror beneath the lid showcases the glimmer of glassware and decanters. Behind the bar is a full-height photo wall, featuring professional black and white family photos, with all 32 frames custom-made for the scheme in distressed cream washed timber with a heather gray Belgian linen matte or surround. Other furniture in this room includes a softly tufted dark grey leather Onda Pouff by Poliform and a striking Argentinian-made and super-soft cowhide patchwork rug with a soft leather border, in an array of neutral shades, from tans and taupes to deeper browns. The coffee table in the centre of the room is a glass and iron Mason coffee table, with three reclaimed timber crates by ABC Carpet and Home. ‘The slightly rustic flavour to this room was a conscious decision’, Susan Knof explained, ‘so that it would work with the stone-framed fireplace, which was inherited and deemed too costly to replace. Instead, it’s been given a more contemporary feel thanks to a bespoke-made reclaimed rough-sawn wood mantel on the top’. Fun accessories include the letter M (for the family surname), lit up in lights over one fireside cupboard area, which is used for keeping toys 31 Upscale Living Magazine |

The young boy’s room is a fun room, with playful layers and patterns, including superhero bedding from Pottery Barn Kids on the Ella Bed by Room and Board and a section of great, squiggle wallpaper by Vivienne Westwood in the inset alcove. A bedside lamp, in green zigzags on white ceramic with a Horchow lampshade echoes the one in the girl’s room and sits on white lacquer bedside table from West Elm. Posters, including vintage superhero posters in custom frames line the walls, whilst the toy baskets on the floor are Kneatly Knit Rope Bins. The chest of drawers is a blue, chromaticthree-drawer dresser, whilst the rug in the room is a woven cotton herringbone patter in Swedish blue. Where Street Art and Luxury Meet | BY DELLVIN ROSHON

Sylvain Gaillard, Swissborn Director of Opera Gallery Dubai, is a creative visionary. Not only does he oversee Dubai’s installation of one of the twenty-first century’s most important cultural institutions, but his most recent exhibition, Urban Poetry, is an exercise in the masterful balance between the commercial and intellectual interests of High net-worth modern and contemporary art collectors.

36 Upscale Living Magazine |

C

urating a highly exclusive collection, Urban Poetry showcases work from some of the world’s most prolific and influential street artists: Blek le Rat, Os Gemeos, Stink Fish, London Police, and eL Seed, to name a few; more importantly, the exhibition is part of a larger transition in urban contemporary art from graffiti to street art and from street art to asset class; we know that because Banksy’s Girl with Ballooncum-Love is in the Bin, initially sold for $1.8 million, is now worth an estimated $2.8 million; and while an original Blek le Rat may not go for the same as a Modigliani or Giacometti, what the art industry’s 212% growth since 2008 makes abundantly clear, is that the boundaries around which art, money and value have been traditionally demarcated, are themselves becoming less so. “For a very long time,” Gaillard tells Upscale Living, “we’ve always compartmentalized things. That’s contemporary, that’s post-art,

NOVEMBER 2018 www.upscalelivingmag.com

that’s impressionist … the hierarchy of an oil on canvas is inherently better than a gouache on canvas, than a piece on paper. We live in interesting times because this is being broken down. And although Banksy has nothing to do with my exhibition, what happened at Sotheby’s was the best example. You can’t box things in anymore. Art is art.” One, however, need not necessarily be versed in Picasso or Renoir to enjoy them. From their wildly successful 2015 Icons of Art show to their equally dynamic 2017 Gold exhibition, Dubai’s response to Opera Gallery group shows has been overwhelming. And yet, with such successful exhibitions behind them, a “street show” was not in the gallery’s repertoire. When asked about the inspiration for the current show, the Northeastern MBA grad was clear. “I love street art,” Gaillard says, “and I collect street art. It’s always easier to

F A S H I O N

“I work from the perspective of free public space, trying to recover the street as a place to make information available to everyone. Different from advertising and institutional information,” he tells Upscale Living, “my work lives in the street … I also work with ideas about transit, borders and equality. Anybody can be portrait on a wall because everybody is important. That´s why I use materials that tell stories.” Nevertheless, art auction and collection is still a big boy’s game; all of the artists chosen for the exhibition have, in their own way, helped to take street art from the walls of cities to the walls of galleries; a discerning collector that spends 300k a year on art will spend 300k, but it must be for the work of tried and true masters; and while Blek le Rat, eL Seed, and Stink Fish pieces can be “viewed in the wild,” their canvas works sell for 6 figures as buyers look for more creative ways to invest.

work with something that speaks to you. I picked these artists for a very specific reason, more than what they represent visually,” he adds. “There is something deeper behind their art.” Graffiti’s metamorphosis into street art has always been about more than tagging walls. What was once freedom of expression has now become a responsive instrument that dignifies people in otherwise undignified conditions. Blek le Rat, the “Father of stencil graffiti”, for example, is most noted for his painted stencils of rats, calling them “the only free animal in society.” His artwork birthed an entire generation of graffiti and guerilla artists from Speedy Graphito to Miss Tic, and Futura 2000. That the “rat” is a symbol of art itself should not be lost on anyone.

Opera Gallery Dubai’s place in the city’s evolving art market opens a door of sorts. One behind which locals, expats, and passersby alike can peek, thus becoming more and more intimate with the mind-blowing vastness of street art while, at the same time, learning more about themselves. But isn’t that the purpose of art anyway? In the end, though: “art is the great equalizer,” Gaillard says. “Whether you are eight or eight, it will always find you.”

French-Tunisian Calligraffiti artist, eL Seed, as Gaillard notes, “is always socially-engaged and doesn’t do calligraphy for the sake of doing calligraphy.” His use of Arabic graffiti transcends language through projects like Perception, a piece covering 50 buildings visible only from Cairo’s Muqattam Mountain and, what’s more, his TED talks inspire millions. MYKONOS THE BEST OF GREEK ISLAND LUXURY | BY EMMA-LOUISE O’NEILL

ALL IMAGES COURTESY OF STATHIS BOUZOUKAS

The beauty of the Greek islands is almost mythological - white-washed cube-style architecture and Byzantium churches set against the Mediterranean blue. Each island certainly has a charm all its own; Corfu’s sandy beaches, Santorini’s volcanic caldera and Delos’s ancient ruins…making it almost impossible to choose between them. As we were celebrating my sister’s 40th birthday, we wanted five-star luxury along with decadent fun – so Mykonos was the obvious choice.

A

lthough small is size, Mykonos has long been known for its flamboyant and glamourous nightlife, which of course attracts a very fashionably international crowd. So it’s no surprise that the island is now home to some of the best destination boutique hotels in Greece, as well as setting standards for the most fabulous and decadent beach clubs, which have been attracting an A-list clientele since the 1960s. Nammos Beach (www.nammos.gr), the lively bikini-and-sushi beach club and restaurant at Psarou Beach renowned for attracting a traffic jam of superyachts anchoring off the shore in high season, is world famous. Everyone goes for lunch, and stays for sundown – if you are lucky enough to get a table. And Nammos just got a little better with the addition of new beach cabanas featuring a private outdoor Jacuzzi, a butler to serve champagne, and even a dedicated private chef serving up delicious treats. Set slightly up from the beach, it’s certainly the most luxurious way to enjoy the famed party beach as you are guaranteed five-star service and a little privacy to relax. The Psarou Beach crowd does glamour like nowhere else – this is designer beach fashion at its best and people are here to be noticed. Don’t be surprised if you feel a little underdressed upon arrival, so it’s rather lucky the international stores of Nammos Village are a short dash up from the beach. Brands such as Dior, Oscar de la Renta and Louis Vuitton and Christian Louboutin are among the stores set in lush botanic gardens, and the chances are you will return to the beach in an entirely new outfit – probably with five new resort outfits! (www.nammosvillage.com). As we were celebrating a landmark birthday, we’d opted for a tailor-made trip to ensure we experienced the best this amazing Greek island had to offer – and our Mykonos concierge Angela (www.mykonosluxurytravel. com) took care of the finer details with a superbly planned trip. Location is everything in Mykonos; a shortage of taxis means travel around the island can be challenging, so you need to ensure you have a hotel in a good location and 24-hour driver or hotel shuttle. The plush 5-star Kourous Hotel (www.kouroshotelmykonos.gr) has both – as well as a stunning clifftop location. It’s a picture-perfect Greek hotel, with serene all-white interiors and to-die-for views rolling down to Mykonos town, set off by the dazzling cobalt blue of the Mediterranean. 40 Upscale Living Magazine |

With interiors by French designer Fabienne Spahn and spacious rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, the Kourous feels more like a stylish private villa than a hotel. Our suite came with its own private pool, so we could have happily stayed relaxing there all day (with a few trips to the Zoe spa for good measure) – however, the amazing selection of pastries and healthy breakfast (including the traditional local filo pastry pies with fillings such as spinach and feta) served around the main pool, with the views down over the activity of Mykonos town, always tempted us out to enjoy the atmosphere of the hotel. Sunset is also a big occasion here, when it seems almost the entire population of the island emerges to watch the sky softly fade into the most spectacular rose-gold light. Little Venice, a quirky waterside area in Mykonos town that takes its name for looking strikingly like the real one, is probably the most popular spot for sunset, but as you’d expect it’s thronged – luckily, we had the most panoramic views in the luxury of a VIP private terrace at our hotel. I doubt there are better views anywhere on the island, especially as ours came with chilled champagne and fivestar service. Kourous’ central location was perfect for making the most of the renowned Mykonos nightlife. The New Remezzo (www. remezzo-mykonos.com) restaurant, the newly renovated legendary island hotspot, is so good it features in every jetsetter’s little black book. The atmosphere is buzzy, the crowd glamorous and the fresh fish amazing. Mykonos devotees come back here year after year, it’s almost a ritual to do a big dinner at Remezzo – and we totally succumbed to its charm, so much so that we had to return a second night during our trip, and loved it just as much again. While the fabulous nightlife is definitely part of the charm of Mykonos, we were also in need of some pampering and time to unwind after a hectic few days. The second half of the holiday was going to be all about leaving the crowds behind and relaxing, and the majestic Blue Senerity Villa (www.mykonosluxurytravel.com) in Panoramas, in the north of the island, was certainly the perfect place for that – especially as it came with a concierge and five-star service, including a private chef who spoilt us with out-of-this-world cuisine (her peach and seabass ceviche was so good we demanded it daily). So after a few days of doing nothing (despite the attempts of the concierge to tempt us on a private charter and guided excursion of the ancient ruins of Delos, the closest island) but admiring the stunning view of the Mediterranean from our infinity pool, working on our tans, having massages by the pool and eating like Royalty, we were ready to join the beach party set again. Luckily, the lavish Principot beach club (www.principote.com), was next door and boasted an amazing wine list to match any Michelin-star restaurant in the beautiful beach décor surroundings – proving it is possible to have the best of fine-dining while barefoot at the beach, a very unique experience. That’s the charm of Mykonos, it serves up the most glamourous fun, set against the beauty of the Greek islands – something certainly on the wish-list for those big celebration holidays. www.elobrands.com | @elobrands

COMIC STRIPS Brussels is also a capital of comic strips with a long history of the birth of legendary comic book characters. It is where Tintin, Spirou and the Smurfs (and many more) grew up and they now decorate restaurants, hotel rooms are celebrated and paraded in the streets. Comics are ingrained in Belgian culture and there is even comic book route with pays tribute to characters and authors of the Franco-Belgian comics on the walls in the city center and Laeken. Located in the heart of Brussels, in a majestic Art Nouveau building created by Victor Horta in 1906, the Belgian Comics Art Museum opened its doors to the public on 6 October 1989. Each year tens of thousands of visitors come here to explore 4,200sqm of permanent and regularly changing temporary exhibitions.

GASTRONOMY Gastronomy has a long history with deep-rooted traditions, quality produce and bold flavors in the city. Among the many Belgian specialties are four favorites: chocolate, beer, frites and waffles. The most-exported gourmet product from the city, nearly arranged in ballotin boxes, pralines (invented in Brussels) are true jewels. World-renowned chocolatiers like FreĚ deĚ ric Blondeel, Godiva, Laurent Gerbaud, Mary, Neuhaus, Pierre Marcolini and Wittamer can be found there while places like the Belgian Chocolate Village and

Choco-Story Brussels are devoted strictly to the discovery of chocolate. And for those chocolate lovers and professional chocolate makers alike, the annual Salon du Chocolat/Chocoladesalon (Chocolate Fair) has become a not-to-miss event. From casks or bottles, beer is a favorite among citizens and visitors which can be enjoyed after taking a bite at a frites stall (called friteries, or fritkots in Brussels parlance). Like everyday life in Brussels, the food is a palette of many colors and draws upon the flavors of

the world from Italian, Spanish and Portuguese dishes to more exotic cuisine from Asia or Africa. Highlighting the more than 2,000 restaurants in Brussels are five two-star Michelin rated restaurants. And although fires are the national dish of Belgium, Brussels also has a lot to offer for the sweet palate. Famous for the Belgian waffle, which is more of a breakfast dish, the Brussels waffle or gaufre de Bruxelles shine as treat food which can be purchased at a street stand and top with everything from fresh fruit, chocolate and numerous other toppings.

LE MERIDIEN PARO Riverfront | BY JYOTI BALANI

In the month of August I was invited by Sanjay Sharma, Market Vice President, North India, Bhutan & Nepal, Marriott Hotels to visit and write about the two Le Meridien hotels in Bhutan.

I

traveled from Kolkata to Bhutan by Drukair Royal Bhutan Airlines and the pleasant journey lasted for about an hour. Le Meridien Paro is fortunately just ten minutes away from the airport and the drive from the airport to the hotel was interesting with Bhutanese music playing on the radio along with the beautiful Paro River flowing by! The hotel is magnificently designed and reflects Bhutanese architecture at it’s best. On arrival I was accorded a warm welcome by General Manager Randal Whelpdale and his team and we spent a good fifteen minutes chatting in the beautifully designed lobby of the hotel also called the Hub. I was ushered to my room by the hotel’s team and it was a pleasant surprise to see personalized welcome amenities created by the Executive Chef. The amenities consisted of local Bhutanese chocolate, a bottle of local peach wine, a Bhutanese jewelry box, a Bhutanese inspired notebook, a Bhutanese mask and locally grown organic fruits. What I noticed immediately after settling down in my room was the heavenly sight of the Paro River flowing by. Nestled in a Himalayan valley on the banks of the Paro River, the resort is a 30-minute drive from the Paro Taktsang monastery-one of Bhutan’s most ancient icons. Just outside the entrance is a Buddhist chorten or stupa-symbolic of the ancient art of prayer. The resort also caters to international business travellers with 612 square metres of meeting space. All 59 guest rooms, including seven suites are designed with a classic Bhutanese point of view and offer arresting Himalayan Valley and Paro River views, as well as a signature LM BED, a bathroom with a rainforest shower and a bathtub. The combination of contemporary style with a European influence 46 Upscale Living Magazine |

and Bhutan’s exquisitely rich culture and age-old tradition is the most remarkable feature of the hotel. “Le Meridien Paro Riverfront is a destination in itself; the resort embodies the spirit, culture and ethos of Bhutan. While at the property you will be one with nature and the calm you experience will help you absorb the positivity from all around,” said Randal Whelpdale, General Manager Le Meridien Paro Riverfront. It is a good idea to spend some time relaxing in the Explore Spa as I discovered during my stay at Le Meridien Paro Riverfront. I experienced a fabulous signature massage where two therapists massage you simultaneously in perfectly synchronized movements. For lunch I visited Latest Recipe and was delighted by the sight of the Bhutanese platter created by Executive Chef Binay Singh. The platter consisted of red rice, the kewa datshi (potato cheese and chilli), the jasha maroo (local chicken stew), the ema datshi (local chilli with cheese), the buckwheat pancake, the shamu datshi (mushroom cheese and chilli), the nakey datshi (wild fern with cheese and chilli), the gondo datshi (Bhutanese fried eggs) and in the centre you can see momos along with ezzay (Bhutanese chilli pickle) and Hogay salad which is the local cucumber salad! The Bhutanese eat a lot of chillies and cheese as it was obvious after eating the local food. During my stay the chef created interesting Bhutanese dishes such as thukpa, noodles, momos and the hotel’s signature breakfast preparations such as eggs benedict and omelet stuffed with cheese and spinach. In the evening I was served tea in the alfresco area of Latest Recipe and the sight of the mountains and the river flowing by from there was breathtaking. The Executive Chef has created a delightful little kitchen garden there in the alfresco area and I spent a lot of time admiring rows and rows of tomatoes, beetroot, baby carrots, Thai chillies, parsley, celery, sage, chives and the beautiful scenery in the company of Pema Seldon, the hotel’s Assistant Manager, Marketing and

NOVEMBER 2018 www.upscalelivingmag.com

Communications. The alfresco area of the hotel is a major attraction with most guests and this is where I spent a lot of time eating breakfast, having tea and just gazing at the beauty of nature. One can also witness aero planes flying really low from here as the airport is pretty close by. This alfresco area is perfect for parties and can accommodate upto 500 people; it is perfect for a barbecue night complete with bonfire. This area is just ideal for those looking for a unique venue for their post or pre wedding celebrations. The next morning we went sightseeing and visited the beautiful temple called Kyichu Lhakhang. This is one of Bhutan’s oldest and most attractive temples and in the rains it looked even more serene and breathtaking. It is believed that this temple was built by King Songtsen Gampo of Tibet to pin down the left foot of a giant ogress who was causing problems for the establishment of Buddhism in Tibet. It was a blessing to be allowed in the inner sanctum of this temple by the priests so that we could witness the beauty of the deity and spend some quiet time in prayer. I also spent some time in the outer area of the temple spinning its many colourful prayer wheels when Pema told me that it is auspicious to do so. The next day I went sightseeing with Pema to visit the National Museum of Bhutan and the Sangchen Choekhor monastery. I also went shopping to the local handicraft market and picked up some beautiful pieces of Bhutanese jewelry and souvenir magnets to take back home. Bhutan is heavenly and full of gorgeous sights and soothing sounds! It was heartwarming to note that Bhutanese are happy people with a deeply religious and spiritual inclination. They are blessed with beautiful natural scenery owing to the location and their monasteries and temples are very well maintained. My interactions with Bhutanese locals were immensely pleasant and I learnt that one does need a lot of money and success to be content or at peace with life. Being in Bhutan was food for the soul and one of the best journeys of my life!

ew things get me as excited as the erudition that I will be spending a few days in the bush. A weekend at the chic Silvan Safari is right up my alley and with my 12-year-old daughter as my favorite travel companion, it makes perfect sense to take her along to this spectacular family-and couple-friendly lodge. We board our direct Airlink flight from Cape Town International airport to Nelspruit KMIA airport on the sleek and stylish Airlink Avro RJ85, flying us there in just two hours and 35 minutes. At KMIA airport, we are met by the very helpful and friendly Airlink staff, who assists with our check-in and baggage for our unique 20-minute airside transfer to the Airlink Lodge Link flight, connecting us to the doorstep of our safari destination. In no time, we are seated in Airlink’s 208B spacious 12-seater Cessna Grand Caravan, operated by two pilots, making our way to the Arathusa airstrip, gateway to many adjoining private game lodges in the reserve, including Silvan Safari. The weather is bleak and rainy, and my daughter and I are relieved to be collected by guide Murray Hay and tracker James Siwela in a closed vehicle, shielding us from the elements.

Our drive to Silvan Safari takes us through part of the reserve, and amidst the falling raindrops, we spot hyenas scurrying off into the distance. We are warmly welcomed at Silvan Safari by general manager, Ella Cuyler and lodge administrator, Geze Monareng after which we are offered the most delicious tray of hot chocolate by butler Xolisa Khatu to ward off the chill. Ella accompanies us to our luxurious suite, Cassia, one of only six trendy suites constructed with a view of the riverbed. Each suite has a name inspired by the surrounding trees – choose between Kierie Klapper, Knobthorn, Blue Guarri, Tree Wisteria or the Leadwood family suite. With its smidgens of yellow, Cassia pays reverence to the Cassia tree, also known as the golden rain tree, exhibiting the most striking yellow flowers in the summertime. Perfectly executed by interior designer Jacqui Hunter from Imagenius Interiors, the free reign she was given let her creativity soar, as much as the European Bee eater that takes center stage at Silvan Safari. “I was not given a specific brief by my client”, says Jacqui. “This was amazing for me, giving me loads of freedom. The position of the lodge and the ‘spirit of the trees’ brief was all I needed.” With her background in hospitality and passion for the guest experience as well as the bush, Silvan Safari couldn’t have chosen a more suited interior designer. “Conceptualizing an experience that is mindful and conscious of the environment being the hero, was central to my process.” Using sustainable materials is imperative for Jacqui, but that can be tricky at times. She is cognizant of a light footprint, with absolute minimal damage to the environment. Color is her passion; she loves having the freedom to move away from a safe and boring palette, thus incor-

work, we used cement bricks, since they were available closer to the site.”

porating lots of bright hues. “The color that runs through the lodge is inspired by the little hero of the lodge – the European Bee eater with its beautiful golden chest, teal head and coppery wings.” Working in conjunction with architect Marcus Smit and Silvan Safari partner Charl Brink, who saw to the perfect design and positioning of the suites, each with a particular nature determined by the tree in its surrounds. Glorious works of art curated by resident artist Gregg Brill adorn the walls of the lodge and a special piece was commissioned and chosen for each suite. “I commissioned the works and whilst it was specific in terms of the color palettes and the subject matter, I gave all of the artists freedom within that brief to interpret and express. Each room has a signature piece that is a collaboration between a watercolor artist, who began the process, an illustrator who did the line drawings and an embroidery artist who added the final touch. The artwork tells the story of the tree and the creatures that live around it. In the end, their creative energy comes through to the guests. My intention was for it to celebrate its environment, with the most important part not being the aesthetics, but how it feels.” 50 Upscale Living Magazine | NOVEMBER 2018

A lodge of this nature would not have come to fruition without the innate wisdom of an architect. Marcus Smit of Marcus Smit Jacobs Architects was given the task of designing a compact and exclusive high-end lodge, with a fresh take on lodge architecture to challenge the norm of typical game lodges. With sensitivity to the site, the design had to fit in with the natural surroundings. Challenges were averted when constructing the lodge, such as the resident leopard under the deck … “When we initially started to mark out the building site before construction, we spent many hours with Silvan Safari partner Charl Brink,” says Marcus, “who has a thorough knowledge of trees and the site. We aimed to preserve as many trees as possible, even saplings; we worked closely with an environmental consultant. The design was influenced by the natural positions of the trees and our desire to accommodate low branches, bushes and game paths, saw us creating a masterpiece that sits pretty amongst the trees.” Sustainability in material use was also a key factor for Marcus. “All the timber used are locally grown and milled from the nearby Mpumalanga area. For plastered masonry www.upscalelivingmag.com

Another eye-catching feature at Silvan Safari is the dark exterior color of the main building and the rooms. “The black color, called ‘Silkwood’ came as a functional result of the wood preservative product that the client wanted to use, having had experience with this product in the bush over many years,” says Marcus. “From the available colors, we chose the black since we envisaged that, as the buildings are mostly placed in the shade of the trees, the color will make the buildings blend into the background. The ‘chic safari feel’ is achieved because the black is a neutral palette and backdrop for the green of the trees as well as the colorful interiors created by Jacqui Hunter.” Part of the Silvan Safari brief was that they wanted space, with an end product that is simply astounding – spacious rooms with tasteful interiors, housing a stunning bedroom, lounge area, dressing room, expansive bathroom with double shower and freestanding tub, double vanities and the largest toilet cubicle with a toilet and a bidet, an outside area with a pool and huge wraparound decks. “The specific areas had to be thought through to accommodate everything that a luxury lodge of this level has to offer,” says Marcus. “From an internal planning point of view, it helps that the bathroom is treated as a separate

annex to the bedroom / living area, linked by the dressing room which acts as a passage. This allowed flexibility in placing the buildings between the trees. It also provides an element of discovering another room. Having large openings and doors disappearing into cavities makes the areas feel open and part of the outside, which gives the impression of even more space. The expansive decks, each designed and shaped to fit in with the specific room’s site, provides an uncluttered flow to move around. Furniture positions and sizes were carefully considered with the interior decorators in order not to ‘over furnish’ or clutter the rooms and decks.”

broth. For dessert, there is tonka panna cotta, chocolate soil, vanilla pickled shimeji mushrooms, honeycomb rock, chocolate twigs & mint rocks.

Another drawcard at Silvan Safari is the mouthwatering cuisine. We arrive in time for High Tea, with a wonderful array of delicacies on display. Taryne Evans, Senior Chef de Partie, is in charge of all things gastronomical and whips up the most enjoyable food.

Back at our suite, my daughter has a dip in the pool before we are pampered at the Ansellia Spa with a welcome and relaxing scalp ritual for me by spa therapist Thembeka Mkhize and a foot ritual for my daughter by Simi Tsosane.

For dinner tonight, we are spoilt for choice – think aubergine & mushroom tartare bowl with lemon mayo, pickled mustard seeds, cured egg yolk, edible flowers, charred pickled onions & burnt onion dressing for starters; panfried sea bass / marinated tofu, tom yum dressing, sprout kimchi, spring onion, edamame beans, fresh lime & crispy kataifi pastry, followed by a palate cleanser of kiwi, cucumber & melon granita. Third course is crispy duck breast, egg noodles, mange tout, baby marrow, pac choi, orange & sweet-spicy

Spearheading the Silvan Safari venture is David Ryan, Founder and CEO of the incredibly successful tailor-making tour company Rhino Africa. This self-confessed bored accountant with a passion for travel, particularly in Africa, wanted to do something where he could make a meaningful impact and leave a legacy on the continent. Rhino Africa was born in 2004, when online travel was an emerging industry in the beginning stages of gaining real traction.

What is a stay at a swanky safari lodge without a fair share of animal sightings? On our morning game drive, Murray and James are ready to show us the animal magnetism of Silvan Safari. Our first sighting is of a breeding pair of fish eagles, followed by a partially submerged hippo, some warthogs, a red-billed hornbill at our morning coffee stop and a small herd of elephants in front of the lodge when we return for the most delightful breakfast.

“Back in 2004,” David remembers, “the internet and especially online travel were primed for massive disruption. By utilizing this opportunity and gearing the company towards making an impact, I was fortunate enough to combine my passion for travel with my desire to create a lasting change for the communities, landscapes and wildlife of Africa.” Venturing into the unknown – the conceptualization and construction of a brand-new lodge is a gutsy move, but David takes it in his stride. “The opening of our own lodge is as much a commercial investment as it is an opportunity for our tour operating business to stay connected to the bush. Having traveled Africa extensively and visiting top-end lodges, the drive came to create something that was ground-breaking, innovative and unique. That is why you will find, that Silvan Safari is a safari experience reimagined.” Not wanting to imitate anything that is currently available in the market, David knew it was important to continue developing partnerships with their valued supplier base and not be seen to compete with them. “Given the position we hold in the industry, we dipped our toe into this market, by building a 6-bedroom luxury lodge, focused on reconceptualizing the safari experience, as our core business continues to grow, the lodge is there to enhance our current partnerships and not compete with them.” NOVEMBER 2018 www.upscalelivingmag.com

surround the lodge, providing the most incredibly serene environment.

Being part of a community of incredible industry innovators made David realize the value of Rhino Africa’s strong partnerships with them. “We are blessed because pioneers like Lion Sands, Ulusaba, Singita and Londolozi have laid the path, enabling businesses like us to come and build a luxury lodge and make it sustainable very quickly. We recognize the fact that the ability to build a luxury lodge in a reserve like the Sabi Sand is only made possible by the journey that these other lodges have pioneered for us.” Bringing the Silvan magic to life, David credits the staff as the true heroes. His favorite part is the tranquility of the bush, the Jackalberry and Leadwood trees that

I can attest to that. After a wonderfully relaxing few days, it’s time to head home, but not before a final drive in an open safari vehicle to the Arathusa airstrip. I’m keeping my eyes peeled for the talked-about leopard that has eluded us the entire time, making a cameo appearance for the other guests. I’m jolted back to reality by the sound a plane flying overhead. It’s our Airlink Lodge Link flight that is early, transporting us back to Nelspruit KMIA airport. Seated next to the window in the Airlink Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, I gaze downwards at the bush, slowly disappearing from my vantage point is the absolutely serenity that is my happy place. www.silvansafari.com Thank you to Dawid Minnie for arranging our stay and to Silvan Safari for hosting us. * Views expressed are the author’s own.

SABLE ALLEY Khwai Private Reserve, Botswana | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS

Renowned for its unbridled wildlife sightings, Khwai Private Reserve is home to the most staggering amount of animal viewings. Add to that a stay at the luxurious family-friendly Sable Alley and you know you have landed in paradise.

h, Botswana, the Eden of Southern Africa, home to the famously unique oasis that is the Okavango Delta. After a few solo trips, I think the time is ripe to bring my daughter along to witness the indescribable beauty that Botswana has to offer. We depart from Cape Town International Airport directly to Maun International Airport on the stylish Airlink Avro RJ85, flying us there in a just 2 hours and 30 minutes. Making our way through customs and immigration, we have our passports stamped and are met by a representative from Mack Air, who ensures that we are checked in for our charter flight from Maun to Khwai Private Reserve in the Okavango Delta. The Cessna Grand Caravan takes to the skies with the expertise of Captain Pieter Bezuidenhout at the helm, getting us to Khwai earlier than expected. The magic of the Delta is right on our doorstep. Our ranger MD Mpdisane collects us at the airstrip, where our drive to Sable Alley takes us through part of Khwai Private Reserve. We are warmly welcomed by the staff and after being shown around our lovely room, we settle in for lunch on the deck overlooking the hippo pool. Lunch is a tasty selection of butternut, hake fish, beetroot and salad. Apart from dinner, which is plated, all other meals are served buffet-style and you can help yourself until you can eat no more.

run-of-the-mill-camping-façade, this is ‘camping’ with all the modern conveniences you can imagine in the middle of the Okavango Delta. The tents are elevated off the ground to allow the cooling breeze to waft through on those hot summer days when the temperature gets close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. I’m totally in awe of the expansive bathroom, which houses an inside and outside shower, a flush toilet, double vanities, a dressing area and the best lighting I have ever experienced in an off-the-grid camp. If you don’t want to leave the comforts of your tent, you can sit all day on the comfy couch on your veranda, watching the wildlife coming for a drink. It’s well worth noting that our stay at Sable Alley, or any of the Natural Selection properties, benefits their various conservation projects. A percentage of the revenue raised impacts the protection of endangered species and here at Khwai, Natural Selection is proud to partner with Botswana Predator Conservation Trust and the University of New South Wales to investigate the leopard population in this vast area, a worthwhile cause. They have also teamed up with Round River Conservation Studies / Okavango Research Institute to collect baseline data on large herbivores to monitor the game in the reserve. After donning our sunscreen, hats and sunglasses, my daughter and I set off to the dining area for high tea, after which we are met at the vehicle by MD to take us on our first game drive. The vehicles are spacious, with only seven guests per vehicle and an allowed three vehicles per sighting, we are sure to have the best seats in the house. MD sees another vehicle parked next to an overgrown shrub, and excitement abounds as I wonder if it might be a leopard. The other vehicle makes space for us and much to our elation, a stunning leopard, affectionately known as the Delta Female, is on the prowl, shielding herself from being spotted.

My daughter and I take respite in our room from the heat outside to freshen up before our afternoon game drive. I opt for a hasty alfresco shower outside with nature as my foreground. The Healing Earth products are wonderfully fragrant, and I emerge smelling wholly better than when we arrived.

As she crouches down to start stalking her prey, she uses our vehicle as cover, but the alarm call of the tree squirrels gives her game away. She looks towards us, lets out a frustrated snarl. We learn that she has two cubs, younger than one month in age, and she has to keep her strength up to be able to provide milk for them. We leave her, hoping she will find a meal that will ensure the livelihood of the cubs.

Our tent is enormous in size and with 600 square feet of space, the interior is stylishly furnished. When I mention tent, this is not your

drive, as our eyes fixate on a vulture perched against the bluest of skies, MD suddenly announces ‘has anyone spotted the lions over there’? The male is lying about ten meters from where we stopped, grumpily holding on to a zebra foal. As the lioness walks over, he drags the carcass under a tree, trying to fend her off with noisy growls.

The sun has started setting and in the swampy grassland, a waterbuck family is silhouetted against the sun’s last rays. We return to camp, where a delicious dinner is waiting.

When we return a few hours later, she has started feeding on the piece that is not clutched in his jaws. The closer she gets to ‘his share’, the louder he growls. Not being very discreet about their location, a herd of elephants sniff them out and with a very large trumpeting, the matriarch charges at them, but they are not moving tonight.

After a cleansing shower, we retire for the night under our silky soft duvets. The mosquito netting has been dropped and an air of serenity engulfs the surrounding bush. Except for the hungry hippo. He must have tasted something really good next to our tent as his loud feeding frenzy makes it sound like he’s going to eat the whole tent! Before our morning game drive, we pause in the dining area to greet the new day with some liquid refreshment and home-made baked goodies. It’s always exciting to wonder what we will find when the nocturnal animals might still be lurking. We encounter the Wild Dogs again, sleeping in the long grass, and an elephant family looking for shade under a tree. Back at Sable Alley, we indulge in breakfast with the rest of the morning spent at leisure. I sit in the lounge area, watching elephants in camp coming in for a drink. My daughter has made friends and they all enjoy the refreshing water of the pool. With Khwai Private Reserve being hailed as one of Botswana’s bestkept secrets, this former hunting concession now teems with the most prolific wildlife sightings in the Okavango region. During our afternoon 56 Upscale Living Magazine |

Dinner is set poolside, and we dine on leg of lamb, vegetables and potato mash. Dessert is delectable strawberry ice cream. Despite the incessant feeding of the hippo (again), I manage to get a good night’s sleep. MD has arranged for us to do a game drive and a mokoro excursion. Our poler, Junior Hatshe is steering us through the channels of the Delta. He stops momentarily and hands each of us a beautiful water lily and reed necklace, made with his own two hands. As he hands my daughter’s one to her, he says ‘You are now The Queen of The Delta’. https://naturalselection.travel/camp/sable-alley/ * Thank you to Mercedes Bailey from Natural Selection for arranging our stay. * Views expressed are the author’s own.

ne of the greatest moments in Aston Martin Lagonda’s (AML) illustrious motorsport history is the inspiration for the latest Q by Aston Martin: Commission; the ‘DBS 59’. Inspired by Aston Martin’s historic 1-2 finish in the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans with its iconic DBR1, Aston Martin Cambridge has commissioned a collection of 24 very special DBS Superleggeras - one for every hour of the legendary endurance race. Called the ‘DBS 59’, each is identified by bespoke design features, hand-crafted interiors and graphic elements drawing directly from the DBR1 and the race it so famously conquered. A marque synonymous with success in the world’s toughest endurance race - the most recent being a dramatic class win for the V8 Vantage GTE in last year’s race - Aston Martin’s outright victory in the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans is the stuff of motorsport legend. Facing stern opposition from works Ferrari and Porsche entries, plus a team of Ecurie Ecosse Jaguars, the David Brown Racing Aston Martin DBR1s fought valiantly to score a famous 1-2 finish in a masterful display of pace, reliability and teamwork. Since described by Sir Stirling Moss - who helped Aston Martin win the 1959 World Sportscar Championship - as ‘the most important Aston Martin ever produced’, the DBR1 has deservedly attained iconic status. Just five were built between 1956 and 1959, making it one of the rarest Aston Martins ever, and when one last went to auction (at Monterey in 2017) it set a new world record as the most valuable British-made car ever with a sale price of £17.5m ($22.5m). Immediately identifiable by its timelessly beautiful Aston Martin Racing Green paintwork, the DBS 59 features extensive use of gloss finish Carbon Fibre, most strikingly on the roof, roof strake and painted bonnet louvres. A classic combination of Obsidian Black and Chestnut Tan leather is used throughout the interior, together with fabric inspired by the DBR1 seat material used to trim the ‘DBS 59’s’ seat backs and door inserts. Bronze detailing is strategically deployed around the exterior and interior, with the front grille surround, ‘Superleggera’ bonnet script, rear Aston Martin script and Q Fender Badge amongst the items painted. Additional Q by Aston Martin detailing include bespoke Saddle Leather Helmet Pods in the rear compartment to hold special ‘DBS

59’ crash helmets, race suits and gloves, and a bespoke ‘DBS 59’ logo embroidered in the seat headrests. Each of the ‘DBS 59s’ will be identifiable by a small painted white roundel adjacent to the side strakes, with each car numbered from 1-24. Further accessories include period blue race overalls complete with Aston Martin and ‘DBS 59’ logos; replica string-backed racing gloves modeled on those worn by 1959 Le Mans-winning driver Caroll Shelby; replica 1959 race helmet; bespoke 2-piece luggage set to match interior trim; bespoke car cover in Aston Martin Racing Green and featuring white roundels with specific edition number. The DBR1’s proud genetic legacy is very much evident in the 2018 DBS Superleggera. The fastest and most powerful series production model in Aston Martin’s multi-award winning range, this 211mph, 715bhp Super GT is an inspired combination of imperious performance and impeccable style. Having received the attention of Q by Aston Martin: Commission it is a truly covetable car; one aimed at those who appreciate the lasting significance of DBR1’s historic victory and world-beating contemporary performance and handling of the DBS Superleggera. Speaking of the ‘DBS 59’, Aston Martin Vice-President and Chief Marketing Officer, Simon Sproule said: “When Aston Martin Cambridge expressed a desire to create a limited run of DBS Superleggeras inspired by the DBR1’s famous Le Mans victory we knew it had to be something special. The soft metallic hue of the Aston Martin Racing Green paintwork is classy and timelessly beautiful; the level of thought and detailing is exceptional. My favourite element on the ‘DBS 59’ are the seat backs that feature fabric inspired by the DBR1 seat material, but there are countless touches that will intrigue and delight”. The ‘DBS 59’ limited edition is the fourth Q by Aston Martin: Commission from Aston Martin Cambridge, following on from the success of last year’s Red Arrows Edition Vanquish S, and the earlier success of V12 Vantage S Spitfire 80 Edition, marking 80 years of the Supermarine Spitfire’s first flight, and the Vantage S Blades Edition, developed in collaboration with the Blades Aerobatic Display Team. ‘DBS 59s’ 1 through 24 are available to order now from Aston Martin Cambridge. To place your order please contact Simon Lane at simon.lane@jardinemotors.co.uk.

T I M E P I E C E Who could have foreseen that a young boy from Chicago with no family background in equestrian sport would go on to become world number one? The American show jumper Kent Farrington began riding at the age of eight after finding a picture of his mother on a horse. It was the beginning of an exemplary career, a long journey towards the pinnacle of his sport. Since that moment some 30 years ago, his monumental success has been shaped by unwavering commitment and a constant quest for perfection, along with a passion for horses. From the beginning Farrington had strong support, his family instrumental in the early successes. His mother and sister would ensure everything was arranged - right down to applications for shows - to allow him to train for the maximum time possible. “I used to ride so many horses in shows when I was a kid, with the highest record of competing on 26 horses in a single day. So it was very hectic, and I was very busy. My mother and sister would organize everything for me.” PRECISION SPORT In the early days, Farrington’s coaches were impressed by his commitment, his training all day and every day, but insisted he take one day off a week for his own health. The emphasis on self-improvement remains. To stay at the top, Farrington adheres to a strict regime. He rides and trains his horses daily, and to maintain peak physical fitness, works out five days a week. To impose the least burden on his horses, when riding he follows a stringent diet, eating no sugar, processed food or nightshades (a group of vegetables that includes potatoes, aubergines, tomatoes and peppers) but plenty of fish and chicken to keep up his strength. “For our sport, you can continue riding for as long as you are fit to do so and still win Majors. We can see that with Nick Skelton, who won the Individual Olympic gold medal at the age of 58. I have no desire to stop riding anytime soon so I think it is better that I take care of myself now. It is going to lead to a rewarding career with longevity, remaining in the top 10 riders for the next 20 years being my goal for my career.” In addition to his physical and mental preparation, Farrington is meticulous in planning for the season in terms of which horses to use and events to attend around the globe. His strategy is centred around his horses and taking risks. “I try to choose horses that I think are winners. They aren’t always the easiest, but I enjoy the challenge of trying to make them the best they can be. Part of that is managing their careers and picking venues that suit each horse’s strength.” This fastidiousness, in the organization and management of his stables and horses, reflects a belief that if everything is in order ahead of 61 Upscale Living Magazine |

competition, it will help in the arena. His tack room is a work of art, bridles and saddles hung in perfect symmetry, all labelled with his horse’s names. “I like to have everything under control and know where everything is, even if it only makes me one per cent better.” It is a dedication and discipline that has led to numerous wins on the world stage, proving the extra one per cent, which he works so tirelessly to achieve, does give him the edge. FIRST ROLEX TIMEPIECE Farrington announced his presence when he claimed the gold medal at the 1999 North American Young Riders International Competition at the age of 18. After this, his career went from strength to strength, including wins in the King George V Cup, the American Invitational, the President’s Cup and the Hampton Classic, and, notably, the East Coast World Cup League in which he helped Team USA win gold in 2011. The special relationship between Rolex and Farrington began in 2013, at the La Coruña Grand Prix in Spain. Before he competed, his sister told him she wanted a Rolex, but he could not buy it for her; he had to win it. That day, sure enough, he won his first Rolex timepiece, a Datejust, which he promptly gave to his sister. A year later his list of achievements was recognized with an invitation to become a Rolex Testimonee.

something much bigger than just show jumping,” said Farrington, who believes the Rolex sponsorship has enhanced both his own career and the sport. “I think we are living in exciting times with a sponsor like Rolex who can transform events such as Royal Windsor Horse Show. It raises the level of competition and it is a positive challenge for all riders, with Rolex Majors and the Grand Slam being a big part of our sport today.” The 37-year old’s trophy cabinet in his office in Wellington, Florida, is testament to his phenomenal talent. One of the sport’s most successful riders, Farrington is the only American to have won the Rolex IJRC Top 10 Final (in 2015). The following year at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games he was instrumental in helping Team USA take home silver, while 2017 was a year of unprecedented success; he won seven 5* Grand Prix and retained the world number one position. In May, he triumphed in the Rolex Grand Prix at CHI Royal Windsor Horse Show and was victorious at the Rolex Central Park Horse Show in September. It was here in Manhattan that Farrington demonstrated compassion for those in need, promising ahead of the class that he would donate any money he earned to the Direct Relief fund for Hurricane Irma. “I have a house in Florida, and even though I wasn’t affected, a lot of people around me were. I thought this would be a good opportunity to help those people.” LEGENDARY SIR JACKIE STEWART AWARDS KENTFARRINGTON Farrington’s superlative 2017 season culminated with a spectacular victory in the Rolex Grand Prix at the CHI Geneva. ROLEX EQUESTRIAN FEATURE STORY “I was overjoyed but to be honest I was in a state of shock. I had been trying to win that Grand Prix for so long. I found it hard to believe it was over and I had left the show as the winner.” The prize was presented by British motor racing great and Rolex Testimonee Sir Jackie Stewart, a memory that Farrington will cherish. “Not only had I won one of the toughest Grand Prix on the global circuit, but I was presented the award by an icon. Sir Jackie Stewart is a legend and when he congratulated me, I really couldn’t be happier.” This victory put Farrington in contention for the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping, a title so far achieved only by Rolex Testimonee Scott Brash in 2015. The fact just one rider has won the coveted prize is evidence of its significance. To succeed, a rider must display flawless accuracy, immaculate precision and unparalleled dedication, qualities mirrored in the craftmanship of every Rolex timepiece.

INCORPORATING TRENDS WHILE KEEPING TRADITION | BY TRACY BEARD

T

raditional French cooking techniques are the foundation of high-end cuisine; but to keep today’s diners engaged, chefs must continually incorporate innovative approaches. Molecular gastronomy, a trend of remaking everything into something new, ran rampant for an abbreviated time. Today superior chefs smartly incorporate only the best of these techniques. On my recent trip to Paris, my friend Connie and I dined in three exceptional fine dining establishments: Le 39V, Truffes Folies Paris and Palais Royal Restaurant.

Le 39V Restaurant A rooftop-restaurant in Paris, is circular and features a central terrace garden. We began with a glass of bubbly on the terrace and chatted with Communications Manager Angia Vaudron. We agreed with Angia when she said, “It’s a little bit amazing this place, no?” Chef Frédéric Vardon, chef/owner of Le 39V, joined us on the terrace. I asked if anything changed when he received his Michelin Star in 2012. He said, “The Michelin Star did not change my philosophy. I work for the guests. I work with the produce and my staff; and if my work is valued at one Michelin Star, then that’s ok.” Chef Vardon uses traditional French cooking techniques but adds flare to his dishes. When I asked what he thought about molecular gastronomy, he stated, “Molecular gastronomy can sometimes create very interesting new textures; but if the new texture destroys the taste and integrity of the ingredient, it is no good.” We dined on the chef ’s “Image Du,” or tasting menu, and began with a dish of Kristal Gold caviar on top of thinly sliced beef and green apples. The chef ’s signature dish, oven-grilled macaroni with a ragout of summer truffle, was rich and decadent, and Connie delighted in the farm egg cooked with mushrooms topped with an airy foam. We savored two desserts: a light and fluffy Grand Marnier soufflé and Paris-Brest, round pastries made with praline and hazelnuts served under a sugar cage. Service at 39V consists of a synchronized layer of staff. While the sommelier explains the next wine, a stealthy waiter removes used glasses and plates without your knowledge.

PALAIS ROYAL RESTAURANT Chef Philip Chronopoulos, chef/owner of Palais Royal Restaurant, made his mark on Paris by receiving one Michelin Star just 12 months after opening. Chef Chronopoulos celebrates French haute cuisine, infuses native flavors from his home in Greece, and simultaneously plays with the colors and textures of food without forfeiting the integrity of the ingredients. Connie and I dined on lunch in the garden, and Raphael, the sommelier, selected wines to pair with each dish. We began with Chef Chronopoulos’s signature dish, egg of my childhood. This unique scrumptious bite features a creamy egg yolk positioned on a spoonful of sauce made of pureed tomato, olive oil and honey all encased in a crunchy exterior shell. The creation of the dish is a bit mystifying, and our waiter shared that it takes the chef two hours in the morning and two hours in the evening to make enough for the lunch and dinner services. The shrimp ravioli topped with Daurenki Imperial caviar was decadent, but my friend and I agreed that the crispy rice with artichokes, artichoke chips, marinated radicchio and Parmesan cheese made the top ten best dishes list for each of us. A lovely palate cleanser of lemon mascarpone sorbet with pink grapefruit granita prepared us for a decadent dessert. White cheese vanilla ice cream lay bathed in a pool of raspberries, candied rhubarb and hibiscus syrup. Innovative Cooking These three incredible Paris chefs take French cuisine to new heights. As today’s pioneers in the culinary industry, they are infusing modern methods with traditional French cooking techniques creating tantalizing dishes that engage customers.

TRUFFLES FOLIES PARIS Chef Cyril Bocciarelli owns Truffes Folies Paris, a restaurant where truffles are showcased from subtle to dauntless ends. Truffles elevate any dish, and Chef Bocciarelli highlights his cuisine with seasonal truffles from around the world. Connie and I began our dinner with a refreshing gazpacho with shaved white truffles. The truffle nuance added just a little something extra to the mouthwatering tomato-cucumber soup emboldened with icy basil sorbet. We savored gently baked eggs with truffle and toast points. The simple egg made an unadulterated backdrop showcasing the fresh shaved truffles. Later we dined on al dente tagliatelle pasta bathed in a cream sauce and topped with black truffles followed by a rich and creamy risotto where Chef Bocciarelli used black Périgord truffles from Australia with abandon. The truffle is a member of the mushroom family. Chef Bocciarelli has such a delicate touch and keen understanding of each truffle’s flavor profile that he uses this savory gem to enhance delicious desserts. We enjoyed a decadent truffle-infused tiramisu and truffle ice cream with chocolate cake.
