Six A painting costs a few thousand dollars to create, however, it can sell for hundreds of millions. Here are six of the most expensive paintings, their creators and the message behind them.

“Luncheon At The Boating Party” is a painting by French impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir. It was purchased from the artist by the dealer-patron Paul Durand-Ruel and bought in 1923 for $125,000 from his son by Duncan Phillips. It is currently housed in The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.. It shows a richness of form, a fluidity of brush stroke, and a flickering light.

“Mona Lisa”, also known as “La Gioconda” or “La Joconde” is the portrait of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo. Mona Lisa is a portrait by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. It is a painting in oil on a poplar panel and bought by King Francis I of France. It is now the property of the French State and it is on permanent display at the Musée du Louvre in Paris. 18 | Upscale Living Magazine | December 2011 Digital Issue

“Starry Night” is a painting by Dutch post-impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh. The painting depicts the view outside his sanitarium room window at night, although it was painted from memory during the day. Since 1941 it has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

“Sexual Explosion” is Jim Warren’s mystical but controversial nude painting, once banned in the United States from public exhibition in the 1970’s for being “obscene and sexually explicit,” Today, is recognized as the Most Famous Nude Painting in Modern Contemporary Art since the renowned nudes of the Latin European masters Picasso, Dali and Modigliani, who dominated that art market. The controversial Jim Warren “Sexual Explosion” oil on canvas portrays a female nude in a reclining position on surreal clouds while her body is in a state of exploding ecstasy.

“The Dream” is a 1932 oil painting by Pablo Picasso portraying his 24-year-old mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter. It is said to have been painted in one afternoon, on 24 January 1932. It belongs to Picasso’s period of distorted depictions, with its oversimplified outlines and contrasted colors resembling early Fauvism.

“The Kiss” was painted by the Austrian Symbolist painter Gustav Klimt between 1907-1908. A perfect square, the canvas depicts a couple embracing, their bodies entwined in elaborate robes decorated in a style influenced by both linear constructs of the contemporary Art Nouveau style and the organic forms of the earlier Arts and Crafts movement. The work is composed of conventional oil paint with applied layers of gold leaf, an aspect that gives it its strikingly modern, yet evocative appearance. The painting is now in the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere museum in the Belvedere palace, Vienna, and is widely considered a masterpiece of the early modern period. It is a symbol of Vienna Jugendstil--Viennese Art Nouveau--and is considered Klimt’s most popular work. 19

he Puglian Cookbook, by Viktorija Todorovska is a beautifully illustrated cookbook with recipe and preparation photos as well as images from Puglia itself. Author Viktorija Todorovska has created a memorable introduction to this unsung cuisine. Puglian cooking’s two great benefits are of huge interest to food-lovers today: it’s very simple, usually requiring little technique and basic preparation, and it’s incredibly healthful, as it’s based largely on olive oil and fresh vegetables. These are healthful, delightful recipes that should appeal to everyone, especially lovers of Italian cooking.

Mince

MY WORLD

Who would believe that for £3,000 you could indulge in mince pie... that’s correct! The most expensive Christmas treat in the World goes for an unbelievable price! The ingredients of the pie, which was on show at The Exchange shopping centre in Ilford, London, includes the highest-grade platinum leaf, holy water from Lourdes, vanilla and cinnamon from eastern spice markets. A solid Platinum coin is placed inside to keep with the British tradition of placing a silver coin in a Christmas cake or pudding. It took about ten days for Andrew Stellitano, who runs food design company Astarism to create this exclusive mince pie. The pastry top was designed on a computer and laser cut to give it an intricate finish.

the conscientious caretakers of his dream. Guided by their father’s penchant for perfection, and inspired by their own deeply personal experience at the resort, they all know full well what it means to be a perfect host. What truly distinguishes the Hopkin family from other fine hoteliers, however, is the personal responsibility they take for the experience of each and every guest. They regularly invite the resort’s guests to cocktail parties at the Hopkins’ own house, where they meet friends, business partners, and family members from around the world, always, keeping the personal touch close at hand. Cultivating a life of spice is second nature to them now. Spice Island Beach Resort is also home to a multitude of environmental practices and is a proud member of the esteemed Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) collection and the first and only resort in Grenada to be featured in the exclusive Virtuoso network’s Hotels & Resorts Program. So let’s pack our bags and enjoy the Life of Spice!

A Distinguished Grand Marnier For The Most Discriminating Connoisseurs | By Francis McCarthy Searching for that liquid heaven? Then Balblair 1989 is the drink for you. The Balblair 1989 is mid-amber in appearance with honeygold highlights. Its a full bodied malt with aromas of raisin, green apple, and hints of banana and lemon. The American oak barrels, used in the distillate’s maturation, lend a warm toffee, vanilla fragrance. On the palate there are raisins and fruits with a rich spiciness leading to a long, complex and ultimately smooth finish. Balblair is one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries with production starting in 1790. The distillery is located in the northern Highlands in the village of Ederton, which was found in a 2006 EU survey to have the cleanest air in Scotland! Balblair is currently owned by Inver House Distillers and is reasonably small, producing around 1.3 million litres per year.
