EMERALD JEWELRY

Expert Advice: What to look out for when choosing emerald jewelry | By Katerina Perez

JEWELRY

+

TIMEPIECES

There is no doubt that emeralds, along with diamonds, rubies and sapphires, are the most desirable gemstones. If you got under their spell and are looking for a piece of jewelry with green beryls, here are some useful facts and tips on how to choose the best. You will find out what to look out for in an emerald jewel and what affects its price. Color It is the color that made fine emeralds real objects of desire. A good stone has a natural green color which should neither be too dark nor too pale, with depth and evenly distributed throughout the gemstone. Traditionally, emerald green should be the perfect balance of blue and yellow – a pure green hue. Clarity

Where to buy The most important thing to consider when purchasing emerald jewelry is to go to a reputable source. In addition to that the stone must always be accompanied by a laboratory certificate so that everything is clear-cut. The price varies depending on how beautiful and fine an emerald is, the larger and more beautiful the stone, the more expensive it will be. One thing is for sure, a truly fine emerald of excellent color, clarity, and brilliance is a true rarity of nature and therefore not easy to find. When it comes to deciding between emeralds, reading this article is just the first step. I would recommend visiting at least five or six different boutiques, checking out their selection and trying on a few pieces. You will gradually start feeling the difference between them, and then you can have a think and see which one is the right fit for you personally.

It is not just the color which determines the price of a stone; the purity is also absolutely crucial when it comes to purchasing a piece of emerald jewelry. When the alluring color is matched with good clarity, the light rolls around the gem and comes out in a light sparkle which makes the emerald utterly mesmerising. However, if your stone has a lot of inclusions, whether they are minerals or air bubbles, this will not devalue the stone. Provenance, color, lustre and quality of the emerald material are all important in ascertaining value. Place of origin The third factor determining the value of a piece of jewelry is the origin of the emerald. Stones from Columbia were and remain the gold standard, but Zambian specimens, known for their remarkable purity, are fast catching up. In terms of value, the Columbian emeralds are the most expensive ones because of their fine bluish-green color. There are fine emeralds from Brazil, Afghanistan or Africa too, with some African emeralds practically the same quality as Columbian ones. Size Large stones will never lose their value, and size remains the most important influence on the value after quality. Bearing in mind that it is very rare indeed to find an emerald of more than 5 carats, such a stone would be vastly more expensive than a 3 carat specimen. If you have the choice between buying a larger, lesser quality emerald or a smaller stone with superior color and purity, the latter would be a significantly better investment. Enhancements The emerald is a capricious stone, the most delicate of the top four precious stones. They are a little brittle, not soft as many people believe. If the emerald is heavy with inclusions this would make the stone more vulnerable to damage and to avoid it emeralds are often ‘oiled’ to fill up the cavities in the material and thus become more resistant to any damage through wear. It goes without saying, however, that the more enhancement to be made to an emerald, the lower the price. Certificate When buying emerald jewelry it is very important to ask for a certificate. Even Columbian emeralds must have one to prove they have suffered no enhancements or at maximum minor enhancements. Since the origin can greatly affect the price of an emerald it has to be stated in a certificate where the gem was mined. A fine Colombian emerald with the certificate stating “Colombian” and no enhancement will always have a higher price than an African or Brazilian emerald of the same quality. So which certificates are reliable? I would highlight two Swiss gemmology labs: the SSEF Institute and the Gubelin Laboratory, who specialise in testing precious stones.

FootJoy Golf Shoe Personalization | By Damon M. Banks

Now more than ever, golfers are looking for ways to combine function and fashion with the great strides fashion has made in the world of golf during the past several years. Beyond the fashion-forward shirts and pants we are seeing on tour, and at our local clubs, shoes are the perfect way to complete the outfit. However the shoes must be comfortable, and for more than 60 years, FootJoys have been “the” shoe for many golfers because of the company’s revolutionary technology and design. FootJoy continued to think outside of the box when they launched MyJoys in 2003, which allows for consumers to customize their favorite FootJoy golf shoes. Since this launch, MyJoys has only continued to get better each year with new choices; resulting in now offering more than 14-million color and style options. Billy Horschel, Zach Johnson, Luke Donald, Jimmy Walker, Lee Westwood and a number of other PGA and LPGA players have been showcasing their own personal style while wearing MyJoys on Tour. Knowing the weekend golfer can also completely customize a pair of shoes is a great opportunity to combine the function of FootJoy shoes with personalized colors and styles; and you can even include your favorite collegiate colors, logos or initials. Upscale Living Magazine was fortunate to have time with MyJoys’ Marketing Manager, Rita Lepage, who has been with MyJoys for 13 years. Lepage has been with FootJoy for 25 years, and remains passionate about the exciting offerings the company continues to bring to the golf industry. “We offer the biggest size chart in golf 4 XN to 17 XXW, and we even provide the option to make two different size shoes and widths,” said Lepage. With MyJoys, every shoe is made to order, and can be created and delivered within 14 business days. The DNA 2.0 shoe will also be made available to MyJoys this October, which will add yet another style to the options. “We have over 60 leathers to choose from, with more than 20 different styles from spiked to spikeless, to sporty or traditional,” added Lepage. When beginning the process of designing your very own MyJoys, Lepage has five helpful hints to make the design experience one that will result in shoes being delivered to your door that perfectly express your personality. 1. Be Bold, but don’t try too hard to make them different or you’ll end up hating them when they are on your feet. 2. Slowly introduce little splashes of color one at a time to make sure any changes you settle on improve the design. 3. If you want your shoes all in one color, think about adding textured leather for a hint of flair. 4. Have some fun and add personality to your shoes, whether it’s your initials or the colors of your favorite sports team. 5. Know your size!

On October 22, 2015 BABOR celebrated the opening of the new BABOR flagship-institute in the heart of Berlin with about 250 selected guests. Together with institute-owner Christiane Lingner, BABOR CEO Michael Schummert invited to an exclusive opening cocktail. Located next to the legendary restaurant Borchardt, the institute will offer the high-end assortment of Germany’s leading luxury skincare brand and a very special indulgent experience – first and foremost the BABOR ampoules. During the glamorous night celebrity guests such as Jochen Schropp and Annabelle Mandeng tried those little elixirs with an almost magical effect for themselves. Curiously they rummaged through the stylish ampoule bar and browsed the store with a glass of champagne. Among the guests that explored this future mecca for beauty fans in the German capital were also Bettina Cramer and Shan Rahimkhan. Michael Schummert, being born in Berlin, was particularly pleased: “Berlin is THE trend city in Germany and influences other metropolises in the world. It is the perfect location for our flagship-institute.”

On Monday, actress and director Carmen Chaplin graced the SIHH with her presence to present her short movie ‘A time for everything’ which pays tribute to time, heritage and reveals the Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox watch of her grand-father, Charlie Chaplin. Carmen Chaplin and Jaeger-LeCoultre had a story to share. They decided to make an art project that was revealed last night on the occasion of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s 180th anniversary. When Charlie Chaplin settled in Switzerland, the government wished to give a welcome present to this great man whose talent made its mark on History. Charles Spencer Chaplin received a Jaeger-LeCoultre watch, featuring a back engraved with the words: Hommage du gouvernement vaudois à Charlie Chaplin – 6 Octobre 1953 (A tribute from the government of the Canton of Vaud to Charlie Chaplin – October 6th 1953). This historical watch is exposed at the SIHH. Involved in a broad-ranging partnership with various major cinematographic events (Venice Film Festival, Shanghai International Film Festival, Abu Dhabi Film Festival), the Manufacturer decided to celebrate the memory of Charlie Chaplin and his watch by asking Carmen Chaplin to direct a short film on the theme of time. “I am intrigued by the fact that they have been ticking steadily for more than a century. My grandfather’s watch particularly moves me, because he gave it to my father, Michael Chaplin, his son, when he turned 14. Then my dad gave it to my mum as proof of their love on their wedding day. It was a real good-luck charm because they have been in love now for 45 years”. This was doubtless the reason that Carmen decided to act in this art film alongside her mother and her daughter, Uma. Three generations of women from the same family to illustrate the idea of transmission, the passing of time and inheritance.

Lidia Bersani Luxury Interior Designer

L

idia Bersani has a penchant for designing luxury villas and apartments in the most tastefully sumptuous, gold-gilded way possible in shades of ivory, off-white, cream and furs. A delightful measure of Swarovski crystals thrown in for ensures the dreamy rooms shimmer with opulence. Lidia is noted for her work among he rather elite clientele and purveyors of luxury. Her signature design aesthetics is quite distinctive. But why stick to just these shades? “I love these colours and their combinations. These are colors, which almost everyone likes, consciously or not. The soft ivory toned are timeless and fashionable. You never get bored of these colours when infused into the décor; they make the ambience very cosy, warm and feminine.” She shot to global fame earlier this year after she did the unthinkable: she sailed into unchartered territory. Lidia dreamed up ‘La Belle,’ an uber luxurious mega-yacht designed with women in mind. The highlight? This luxury toy that costs a whopping €250mln (approx.) comes with its own gold-hued chopper. Decadent? Yes. Tasteful? Definitely. But what prompted Lidia to design a luxury mega-yacht? “Yachts are designed to be beautiful and luxurious, but unfortunately the focus is on entertainment, sports and tastes that are male-specific – and are almost always designed by men. Moreover, designing a yacht is a very complex process and, today, it is an absolutely male-dominated field. No super yacht has ever been dedicated or designed for women. I felt that I had to design something for women, wherein you could see a woman’s touch in terms of design aesthetics and detailing,” says Lidia. Designing ‘La Belle’ was a challenge nevertheless, she adds. “It took me a long time and, during the course of design, I had to learn a lot about the technical aspects of luxury yachts. Yet it was a very interesting and a hugely enriching experience,” she observes. | By Smitha Sadanandan

Poland-born Lidia set up her namesake luxury interior designing company in Monte Carlo nearly 10 years ago. The technical aspects she learned at her engineering college helped her as she continued to learn about design all by herself. “I created my own style of design,” says Lidia. “I was never under the influence of any designers or teachers of design schools.” Perhaps that is why her design style is inherently different. It is independent, unique and very Lidia Bersani. In the beginning, she focused only on design and moved on to furniture and décor objects. Gradually, the scope of her work became bigger and Lidia began working with factories in Europe to ensure her collections retained impeccable quality. The next logical step was launching a line of home textile decorations and, to get things moving, Lidia rolled out production from her two small factories in Italy and Poland. “We designed and produced mostly for our clients, for individual order. This is why all our products are very unique, top quality and handmade with attention to even the smallest of details,” she says. As with all companies, success leads to growth. Lidia’s company grew by leaps and bounds and soon it became a challenge to keep up with the increasing demand with each passing year. “This is why we are now expanding our factory in Italy and venturing into the open public market next year,” she adds. This designer-entrepreneur draws her inspiration from women: beautiful, powerful, successful women. “It is for them that I design. Though majority of my clients are men, it is the women who give me new inspirations,” explains Lidia, who is currently working on a new women’s fashion line. What’s the most exciting part of her job? “I like being able to surprise my clients. I try to design a lot more and work on varied projects, items and decorations. Sometimes, I surprise myself with my new ideas,” she says, laughing. “This is what is most exciting for me; you never know today what ideas you can find tomorrow.” Lidia’s strong personality ensures she doesn’t go into meltdown mode in the wake of challenges. “I think I look very far ahead and understand my clients really well. I try and learn about their wishes and dreams, while working with them. I believe that to be able to design, it is important to know how to open up your imagination,” says Lidia, who with her impeccable talent and unflinching perseverance has chartered a path to success.• 28 Upscale Living Magazine |

Bvlgari Giardini Italiani

For its latest high-jewelry collection, Giardini Italiani, Bvlgari decided to step back in time, walk through the Italian gardens and soak up inspirations from the colorful flowers and boxwood hedges that thrived in nature in delightful harmony. Evergreens pruned into interesting sculptures, water fountains, statues and scenic terraces that once dotted the geometric Italian gardens became muses for the maison. Bvlgari’s 100 new unique pieces from its Italian Gardens draw upon fascinating elements of creativity that blossomed during Italian Renaissance. The gorgeous pair of earrings, Hidden Treasures, feature four unusually cut Zambian emeralds embraced by diamonds is informed by the geometric designs of sculptured evergreens. Another masterpiece from the collection is a necklace embellished with azure-hued sapphires, acquired by Bvlgari in various parts of the world. The seven rare sapphires of the Blue Iridescence are boldly set alongside pink spinels, surrounded by a festoon of diamonds. Inspired by the musicality of water fountains, the Water Symphony features a central sapphire (pendant), framed by pear and brilliant-cut diamonds, while ribbons of baguettes are repeated in chains to evoke stylized violin keys. This versatile piece can be transformed into a brooch, bracelet or a necklace. 32 Upscale Living Magazine |

Bvlgari celebrates the Allegory of Spring by Sandro Botticelli with an alluring necklace. A cluster of 16 flowers in 18k gold, each adorned with paved diamonds, make up the Spring Encounter necklace. The luxury jeweler is all about color and one of the most colorful creations of its Italian Gardens collection is inarguably the Secret Garden necklace. Fancy-cut rubellite, citrine, tanzanite, aquamarine and amethyst form multi-colored petals and hang on yellow gold neckpiece encrusted with tiny diamonds. Yet another versatile piece by Bvlgari is the Sparkling Hearts broochnecklace, which lends a romantic touch to Renaissance design with its geometric interpretation of the gardens. Italian flowerbeds, blossoms and water are brought to life with fancy and brilliant-cut diamonds in this adaptable jewelry. Bvlgari raises the bar in terms of creativity with four high-jewelry timepieces evocative of the Italian gardens. A creative translation of the dialogue between nature and art – punctuated with shimmering stones and precious materials – the Geometry of Time watches feature motherof-pearl and colorful gemstones. | Photos courtesy of Bvlgari | Written by

De Beers Talisman Collection

De Beers celebrated its 10th anniversary this year with the Talisman collection. This new line of modern jewelry is a sumptuous palette of brilliant colors, made from both rough and polished stones. Imbued with contrasting textures and organic feeling, the Talisman collection hinges on symbolism and harks back to the time when jewels played the role of protectors. As the rough-hewn multi-colored diamonds mingle with soft-polished ones, a kaleidoscopic pattern emerges to unite design and artistry. This is the first time that De Beers has chartered into the high-jewelry territory with a stunning array of artistic pieces, including a gorgeous necklace accentuated with an exceptional, rough-diamond weighing 13.79cts. Handpicked round brilliant, baguette and rose-cuts diamonds along with rough versions reflect their natural beauty and varying luster, as they lie embedded in white and yellow gold. But what sparked the high-jewelry collection? “My vision was to capture the power of Talisman, whilst bringing a new softness and femininity that would elevate this icon into high-jewelry. The medallion is still present, bringing graphic power and a bold beauty, but it is combined with delicate and supple diamond lines. We sourced some of the rarest and most beautiful rough diamonds we could find, and these designs showcase them in a new inspiring way. It was important to enrich the Talisman story and bring new innovations. Diamonds are set with a new setting unseen before, and allow the rough diamonds and fancy cuts to float over the skin. All together, the new high-jewelry express rough and polished diamonds in all of their power and grace,” says Hollie Bonneville Barden, Head of Design, De Beers.

The highlight of the Talisman collection is, of course, the high-jewelry pieces. However, the Wondrous Sphere is yet another poignant reminder of how a brand can creatively play with diamonds to design a work of art. Featuring a central rough diamond (13.17cts), articulated by rare diamonds in a three-dimensional sequence, the Wondrous Sphere is a nod to the fusion of light and color, distilling mystical inspiration and the quest for discovery. The shapes, colors, texture and lustre of light are all very individual and that’s what makes rough diamonds so precious and appealing to work with, explains Hollie Bonneville Barden. “These natural qualities certainly guided my inspiration and the designs. However, this also comes with a new set of challenges when designing with rough diamonds. You really don’t know what beauties nature is going to reveal and so I had to design directly with the rough diamond in mind, allowing the character and form direct the designs. In that way, it is harder to work with rough diamonds. However, in some ways it is more natural and intuitive as Talisman is about creating harmony and balance with nature’s raw palettes,” she adds. Taking cues from her vision, De Beers crafted four new poetic gold-hued medals, evoking the power of the talisman. The medals capture the colors in nature to enhance the tones of diamonds, which encircle a larger non-faceted stone; while the graphic rings and transformable earrings, in the Talisman series, take on an emotional note enriched with hopes and fantasies. | Courtesy of De Beers Diamond Jewellers | By Smitha Sadanandan 33 Upscale Living Magazine |

you realize that behind the shimmer of the resplendent gems, there lies a secretive world.

Harry Winston’s biggest secret, perhaps, was his own identity. An ironclad clause in his insurance policy, forbade the jeweler from ever showing his face to the public. His name thus came to recognized for the extraordinary jewels crafted by his jewelry house.

The house’s most iconic motif – the Winston Cluster – takes center-stage in Secret Cluster, revealing delightful surprises: a delicate perfume bottle hidden within an intricate web of pavé diamonds; a precious locket concealed beneath a bouquet of round, pear, and marquise-shaped stones, and an emerald stashed behind a sculptural cluster bracelet.

Crafted in platinum with the finest of diamonds, the 29 pieces of brilliant and beautiful jewels carry on the legacy of its founder, Harry Winston, a man of many marvelous secrets – from the diamonds he carried hidden in his pockets; to the private vault concealed within his office walls. The series of new fine jewelry are informed by Harry Winston’s magical mystique, while mirroring the craftsmanship and design that the brand embodies.

The Secret Wonder, on the other hand, features exquisite medallions, meticulously set with a starburst of round and pear-shaped diamonds. Rotate it gently and you see a symphony of sapphires, diamonds and aquamarines hidden on the other side. The Secret Combination, the third in the series, is all about bracelets and necklaces – sparkling rows of detachable strands adorned with fancy-cut diamonds that can be worn in myriad styles. And do we love these bejeweled secrets? Absolutely.

The ‘Secrets’ collection takes you on a voyage of wonderment through its three distinctly different themes – Secret Wonder, Secret Cluster and Secret Combination. The moment you catch a glimpse of the jewels,

In the newest collection, design director Francesca Amfitheatrof takes Tiffany’s breathtaking diamonds and gemstones to stylish new heights, scaling the New York skyline. Celebrating the electrifying glamour of a city that bursts into life beneath a star-spangled sky, Francesca captures the moment and effectively translates them into dynamic designs entitled Masterpieces. “I’ve focused on diamonds to create an extremely modern collection that is very clean and sculptural,” she says. New York’s skyline has inspired many a creative work and, little surprise that Francesca too was hugely inspired by the lights, silhouettes, stars and skyscrapers for the Masterpieces 2015. To strengthen her vision for the new collection, she did some exhaustive research into the brand’s archives that spanned an incredible 178 years. The collection took off with an inspiration from a 1930s necklace. The new avatar was reinterpreted with elegant lines and crafted stronger and geometric, while the earrings, pendants and sculptural rings were set in platinum and adorned with mixed-cut diamonds – baguette, square, princess and round diamonds. Conceived as a statement piece, Tiffany’s draped gold necklace – informed by the richly layered fashion of the 1940s-1960s and the ‘Hollywood Regency’ style of the 1950s – is every bit glamorous. The luxurious fringes and tassles – both in the necklace and bracelet – were recreated with five rows of 18k gold links and rose-cut diamonds set in a hexagonal design. The rock crystal clasps add adequate charm to the pieces. Covetable? Yes, indeed.

For the slightly concave pendant – embellished with round, baguette and square diamonds and custom-cut black onyx – the creative director explored patterns created by water as it transformed into ice. With nature as its palette, the black and white contrasting hues of the pendant encapsulate the beauty of a wintry landscape. Another sleek creation, a necklace – crafted in art deco style – mirrors the graphic shapes of the Empire State and Chrysler buildings. This necklace, set with round and princess-cut diamonds, owes its inspiration to a vintage version from the brand’s design archives. A pair of diamond earrings, reflecting art deco’s clean lines and simple geometry, was given a modern spin with hand-cut round and baguette diamonds. Then, an ancient symbol became the muse for Francesca’s diamond ring of two pyramids – one with four trilliant-cut diamonds and another with paved diamonds – resting on a platinum band. In another design, a 1960s ring provided inspiration for an 18k gold cuff with graphic ball motif and rose-cut diamonds set in a hexagonal pattern. The Tiffany Masterpieces shine with creative brilliance and elegance, leaving you in no doubt that Francesca Amfitheatrof has more than achieved what she set out to do – crafting evocative jewels that capture the essence of the brand. | Photos courtesy of Tiffany | Written by Smitha Sadanandan.

GLAMOUR An Era of Chic, Modern Vibe and Sophisticated Glamour

When I was invited to create a fashion theme for the fall issue, all I wanted to do was put together the vibe of the 60s and showcase how this era has influenced my life. The glam 60s has a very chic and modern vibe inspired by the runways and some of my favorite designers such as Valentino, Givenchy and Balmain among others. Adriana de Moura, from Bravo’s TV The real housewife of Miami is a perfect combination of the BRAZILIAN bombshell with a sophisticated glamour from the era! The power woman with great ideas, the woman who run the world with her thoughts and demands, but never leaving behind her feminine and sex appeal.

(a) It can be practiced recreationally and competitively for one’s whole life, unlike many other forms of exercise. For example, a world cycling champion equipped with a pacemaker has set a new world speed record at the age of 80. There is virtually no age limit for recreational cycling outdoors, and literally none for indoor cycling. VELOTRON (b) Cycling is easy on the body and does not normally lead to overuse injuries such as the knee problems that affect older runners. At the same time cycling is excellent aerobic exercise that can be accurately prescribed to support the heart, lungs, circulatory system, and muscles. (c) The development explosion in computer software and electronic hardware brings new possibilities for the computer based Velotron, including WiFi and Mobile apps. (d) The patented SpinScan® feature measures biomechanical efficiency and displays it on a screen where you can learn to cycle more efficiently. Is software available to help track progress as you are training? If so, how does it work? Performance recording is included in all the Velotron software. The instantaneous and average values of all the variables are recorded (heart rate, power, cycling speed, leg speed, distance travelled, and biomechanical efficiency) and can be displayed as data and in the form of graphs. The data is also transferable electronically to outside parties such as coaches, doctors, performance labs, and etcetera.

RACERMATE VELOTRON How does the Velotron help professional athletes train?

RACERMATE VELOTRON

Velotron provides professional athletes with the ability to precisely duplicate real world cycling racing conditions. Among the entire available indoor bicycle training systems Velotron is the only one that creates true bicycle physics. For that reason it alone duplicates the real-world cycling conditions which provide the correct, optimum training which professionals require and that is immensely beneficial for those wanting to create the ideal training regimen at home.

Why is cycling such a desirable form of exercise? What are the health benefits? The aesthetic benefits?

ARTISANAL Fromagerie New York’s Best! | By Natalie King

The allure of traditional French Bistro, Artisanal Fromagerie, is made even greater by the new direction of veteran restaurateur Sarid Drory. Drory’s plans are to keep many of the well-loved traditional elements of the restaurant, such as it’s reputation for one of New York City’s largest fine wine and cheese selections, and add elements such as a chef ’s table in a private room named “The Cheese Cave”, a live jazz band, interior upgrades and a new sidewalk café for spring and summer. We’re most looking forward to the winter offerings, where you can escape the cold city air outside and relax at one of the intimate bistro tables with a nice glass of wine. The restaurant will be holding Holiday Dinner reservations, and offering a complementary basket for each table at the holiday dinners that will include cheese, wine, and jam at a $100 46 Upscale Living Magazine |

value. Throughout the year, the Happy Hour Special runs Monday – Friday from 3-6pm. Ordering a drink at Artisanal is an experience in itself. Joshua Copeland, Sommelier and Beverage Director, is passionate about each drink that is poured. He studied service at Del Posto, Spirits and Classic Cocktailing at Maison Premiere, wine and sherries the cellars at Hearth and Terroir. Carlos Vasquez is the house Mixologist and at 27 years old, he has made a name for himself based on his connection with guests. His many regular customers come to see him not only for the 21 unique cocktails that he has created, but to talk about another of his life’s passions: U.S. History from 1920 through 1930’s. Sarid Drory has expanded Artisanal’s already-generous wine list, which now boasts 600 bottles and 80 wines by the glass, as well as the bar menu

which now includes 79 high-end scotches, 50 tequilas, 75 vodkas, 45 bourbons, 45 gins, and six sakes to pair with a variety of cheeses. Artisanal’s knowledgeable staff and head fromager can point out perfect wine pairing for one of the 250 soft and hard artisanal cheeses on offer. Artisanal serves wines and champagnes by the glass using the coravin – an exclusive way to serve which extracts the wine without removing the cork, allowing for each nuance and flavor to stay in tact. As a bottle of wine is poured and a cheese tray is passed around, laughter and noise fill the restaurant music begins to play – the perfect way to relax and enjoy an evening in the city. Artisanal Fromagerie and Bistro is located at Two Park Avenue and is open seven days a week, with weekend Brunch, and offers a Late-Night Menu until 2am. 47 Upscale Living Magazine |

The Unmistakable Beauty of

THE BREAKERS Palm Beach | Damon M. Banks

With 140 acres of pristine acreage in the heart of Palm Beach, The Breakers has remained one of the most iconic properties in the United States for well over 100 years. After burning down twice in the early years, it was rebuilt to exceed the expectations of even the great Henry Flagler; who had a vision for the role that this hotel would play in the development and long-term growth of Palm Beach. The heirs of Henry Flagler, along with Turner Construction Company, began to construct the hotel we see today in 1926, which was modeled after the Villa Medici in Rome. The finishing piece to the puzzle was the 75 artisans brought to the hotel from Italy, who created the incredible paintings on the ceilings, which was combined with an overall level of European-inspired details that were rarely found in the United States. Even today, these results still prove to deliver the timeless elegance of a bygone era. Presently, the excitement continues thanks to the dedication by the long-standing family ownership, which is determined to maintain the integrity of the property, while also looking to the future. 48 Upscale Living Magazine |

Issue 37 www.upscalelivingmag.com

$25 million is being invested each year for capital improvements and ongoing revitalization to preserve and modernize this monumental piece of Florida history. The Breakers features 540 rooms and suites; 36 holes of championship golf; 10 Har-Tru tennis courts; luxury spa; a breathtaking oceanfront with a half-mile of private beach, Mediterranean-style beach club; four oceanfront pools; a Family Entertainment Center; eight distinctive restaurants and eight bars; and an array of on-site boutiques. Arriving to The Breakers, you immediately realize you’re in a place unlike anywhere else. A yearly retreat that is a personal favorite, The Breakers has a lot to offer guests of all ages and desires. Obviously, the winter is the peak season and makes for a glorious destination, and though many of the renovations and enhancements occur during the summer months, The Breakers continues to prove to me that it’s a great year-around resort. When asked by Upscale Living Magazine to share my secrets for making the most of the time at The Breakers Palm Beach, I agreed to give my

T R A V E L

honest impressions of the resort. Wine & Dine: There are a lot of great options while at the property when it comes to dining. I suggest skipping lunch one day so you can savor a delicious steak dinner at Flagler’s Steakhouse. I am not a breakfast person, but taking time to enjoy the service and food in The Circle is a great way to begin the day – beautiful atmosphere, and some of the most sincere and hard-working servers in the business. Another great option is to take a 15-minute walk off the property to enjoy Echo, which has a huge menu with a number of great options – however, the sushi is a must for fans of sushi, and save room for the over-the-top soufflé desserts. A local favorite (not connected to The Breakers) is Testa’s, which is ideal for lunch or dinner, and has been serving food and local flair for more than 90 years. Tee It Up: Golf is almost a ritual at The Breakers. The Ocean Course is on the property, and is historically significant as it was Florida’s first 18-hole course. Don’t be fooled by this course, as it has a way of making you fight for birdies throughout the entire round – not to mention, the views of the towering twin Belvedere towers with graceful arches and the sweet-salty smell of the beach causing constant distractions. About 10-miles away is The Breakers Rees Jones® Course, which is certainly worthy of the time spent getting to the course. Both courses are only open to resort guests and members, so they both go above and beyond to make you feel like a member for the day. The Rees Jones® Course is a fantastic design, and is championship style golf at its finest.

Relax & Unwind: I find that just walking the halls of this property and taking-in the grandeur is a relaxing and humbling experience. However, when at The Breakers, time at the pools and beach is a must. They were able to “re-build” the beach this past year, so the beach is more inviting than ever, but the variety of pools is a favorite feature of the property. Each pool has its own personality, and my personal favorite is the South Pool as it seems to always be a healthy mix of ages (the adult pool can be too stuffy, and the kid-friendly pool a bit loud), and the South Pool has a great view out over the beach. I’m a big believer in taking advantage of the bungalow rentals, as these bungalows are some of my favorites in Florida. The bungalows come with a dedicated concierge, which is there to oversee meals and drinks anytime – the bungalows at the South Pool are fantastic, and if you’re lucky enough to find #25 available, take it! Final Thoughts: The Breakers has a lot to offer, and even those taking advantage of the deals offered for the standard rooms, having the many resort amenities makes it an ideal vacation destination for a variety of budgets. The beautifully manicured gardens, newly opened gym (sure to be an outstanding facility when combined with the new spa opening late 2015), and the attentive staff round out the list of reasons to visit The Breakers Palm Beach for that quintessential Florida vacation. I rarely venture off the property, but the area has so much to offer visitors, and Discover The Palm Beaches has you covered for anything you might want to do and see among the 38 cities and towns that make-up the Palm Beaches. DÖTTLING MOROSINI The King’s Secret Safe

After a long and eventful journey through two centuries of European cultural history, a highly unusual masterpiece of Italian blacksmith art has passed through the gates of the Döttling manufactory and has been lovingly restored after 19 months of delicate work. Now this jewel of a safe is waiting to crown the exclusive home of a discerning connoisseur. The safe, built in 1872 by the famous Morosini brothers in Milan, was apparently commissioned by Victor Emmanuel II, who reigned from 1861 to 1878 over the Kingdom of Italy. Its royal origin is visible on both inner doors of the safe, on which the fittings of origin are encased with ornate brass ornaments culminating at the top with the royal coat of arms of the House of Savoy with the crown. The safe is not only special for its exceptionally opulent design and a bolt mechanism that was unusually heavy and highly decorative for the time, but above all for its fabled use; and according to the descendants of contemporary witnesses, this safe was exclusively used by the king to store love letters and memorabilia to his decades-long mistress and later second wife, Rosa Vercellana. The fact that the Morosini brothers’ safe was forged 52 Upscale Living Magazine |

Issue 37 www.upscalelivingmag.com

for the amorous correspondence of the king with his long-time mistress and later wife is indicated by two wonderful details on the inner doors that were engraved as a secret code. Hidden under the royal crown and lettering, both inner door fittings are engraved with a rose, surrounded by a heart-shaped crest which opens upwards. “Rosa,” the first name of the king’s great love, means “rose” in Italian. It can be assumed that the two Medusa-like medals on the outside of the safe depict the king’s mistress in her younger years. In any case, access to the interior of the safe is granted through one of the two. Only after activating a secret mechanism does one of the two medals move to the side, exposing the keyhole behind it. How the safe found its way to Southern Germany, where Döttling scouts secured it in the aftermath of a house demolition, is unfortunately not known. What is certain is that after many months of detailed work, the Döttling manufactory has been able to restore it to the freshly radiant testimonial of a great royal love. Potential buyers can receive further information on this masterpiece as well as price information directly from Markus Döttling. www.doettling.com

Shangria-La Paris Without a doubt, the upper floors of the hotel boast the best views of the Eiffel Tower in all of Paris. If you want to be up close and personal with the world’s prettiest icon, this hotel is for you. Once home to Napoleon Bonaparte’s grandnephew, the grandeur remains in the public spaces. Grand staircases and the gilded grand salon historical function room are as opulent as it gets with the original crystal chandeliers, marble fireplace and Louis XIV décor. The royal treatment begins at reception. Check-in is handled over tea or coffee while sitting in the opulent lounge. Jet lag travelers will benefit from a visit to the health and wellness areas upon arrival to rejuvenate both mind and body. One would never guess that the area that houses the gorgeous indoors pool, bright outdoors terrace and serene spa were once stables for Prince Roland Bonaparte. Delicious dining options range from bountiful breakfasts and afternoon tea to authentic French and Asian dishes in La Bauhinia’s grand room. Another great option is the sophisticated Shang Palace, a Michelin-star restaurant of distinction. Cantonese cuisine and traditional Chinese dishes are served in a soothing dining room with a neutral palette and ancient décor accents. Last, but definitely not least, is Executive Chef Christophe Moret’s gem of a restaurant, L’Abeille. Upscale gastronomy is perfectly paired with the front of the house quintessentially French décor. Chef Moret took over the kitchens at Shangri-La Paris this year and says his goal with the food is to match the menu to the seasons. Fresh produce allows him to accent dishes and provide diners with a spectacular show each night. The details in each room and suite are beyond compare. Relaxing hues of light blue and ecru blend east and west together and marble bathrooms with heated floors, vanity lights that can brighten or dim help those of us over a certain age to see better when applying makeup. BVLGARI White Tea amenities make the toiletries extra special. The Signature Suites offer spacious balconies and direct views of the Eiffel Tower, even 62 Upscale Living Magazine | Issue 37 www.upscalelivingmag.com

from the bathtub. The most spectacular accommodation is the four-bedroom apartment connected to the La Suite Shangri-La, which takes over the entire seventh floor. At 5,382 square feet it can accommodate eight guests and features a caterers’ kitchen, dining room, living room and outdoor entertaining spaces with unobstructed and romantic panoramic views of the Eiffel Tower. The only issue with the Shangri-La was that I hated to leave my suite it was so inviting and decadent. C’est la vie as the French say. Hotel Le Bristol Staying at Le Bristol Hotel Paris is like staying in a country estate on the outskirts of Paris, but with all the modern conveniences in place. Each room has been decorated beautifully in a traditional French style, but there is nothing typical about this charming boutique hotel in the heart of Paris. Outdoor spaces in the lovely courtyard made me feel sunny even though the weather was not cooperating during my winter visit. It was rainy and a bit cold, but the covered seats on the terrace gave me a great vantage point to enjoy the light and bright space while staying dry. The piano man plays at night in the upper lobby lounge and adds a wonderful vibe to the area when you walk through on your way to dinner or for artisan cocktails. The indoor pool on the roof is an oasis on a dismal day. The light coming in from the large windows gave me the feeling that I was outdoors and the nautical teak flooring and decor certainly made me feel like I was on the deck of a luxury yacht. The lounge was my favorite spot to have breakfast. The garden feel inside was casual yet cultured and the seating made it so each guest feels like they have their own private dining area. This was especially nice since I was traveling solo and wanted to be part of the scene without feeling alone. The rooms have a simple elegance, not too fussy and yet it was classic and charming. It had everything needed to work efficiently and rest comfortably. Had I been traveling with my husband, I know he would have appreciated the wireless headphones for the television. I like to fall asleep watching the news and use headphones at home to avoid disturbing him. The fabrics in my room were divine and the attractive seating area was filled with light from the large French doors that opened up to a small balcony. There were two sets of French doors and the bathroom

was filled with natural light from a large window as well. The sizeable bathroom was well equipped with a marble double sink vanity and an enormous bathtub with separate oversized shower closet. There was plenty of counter space for beaucoup toiletry pouches and the amenities had all the supplies I needed. And, who doesn’t love a lighted closet with all the essentials to make for a wonderful stay? Of course one of the highlights at Le Bristol is the cuisine. I was delighted to taste the exquisite dishes prepared by the spirited triple Michelinstar chef Eric Freschon. He is committed to the art of cooking French cuisine with the freshest ingredients and has clear pride in his recipes. It was an incredible edible journey at Le Jardin. The wine and cocktail lists are out of this world. It was a treat to have a private wine tasting in the cellar with chef Sommelier Marco Pelletier where I tasted new and old wines of distinction. Magnums are the better way to go if you have hosting a large party at the hotel. Not only do they carry some of the finest, but some of the rarest as well. The oldest bottle in the cave is a Puig-Parahy bottle from 1875. They guard their reputation fiercely so all of their wines are bought directly from suppliers or vintners. Le Bristol’s signature cocktail is the Official #7 garnished with an orange peel embellished with the name of the hotel and fashioned to the glass with a miniature clothespin. The chicest thing about Le Bristol’s bar is that on the wall behind the bar is a series of screens showing black and white films from different scenes in Paris. I was mesmerized by the early morning shots of the Tuileries, Notre Dame and Sacre Coeur. Most of the scenes were absent people, which is quite a feat in such a 24/7 city. With a fantastic location on rue de Faubourg, Le Bristol was a wonderful home away from home in the heart of Paris. It was a busy schedule and I craved a much-needed cocktail on the terrace in the cool and hip Galerie Joy bar. Once most of my work was finished, I played tourist and sampled award-winning macaroons in a slice of French heaven at restaurant Le Diane. The world’s best movie premieres are held at the effervescent and legendary Le Fouquet’s Brasserie where engraved silver napkin rings are waiting for repeat clients. Hollywood darlings often stay here during their movie launches and pose for portraits on display in the lobby. In the back garden, reflections of both U.S. and French movie royalty are displayed as works of art. The exceptional hospitality at Fouquet’s began well before the seatbelt sign was illuminated on my transatlantic flight. As soon as a reservation was confirmed, my personal butler contacted me to inquire what amenities would make my stay more comfortable. Everything from what brand of sparkling or still water I preferred, whether I would like sweet or savory snacks to what type of pillow pleases me were ordered. Forget a personal item? Your butler is on duty 24/7 to tend to your needs. If you are on the go, they will pack and unpack your suitcase and arrange for all your transportation needs. One of the first things noticeable upon check-in is the lovely scent filling the air and soft chimes alerting the front desk that you have arrived. They will get you up to your spacious chamber with dispatch. The hightech rooms are equipped with mood lighting and electronic blackout 64 Upscale Living Magazine |

Shades as well as convenient plugs next to the bed for charging gadgets during your sleep. Luxurious bathrobes, slippers and the prima cotton towels were delightful. Locals and tourists alike spend time sipping award-winning cocktails made by Stéphane Ginouvès. Stéphane has shaken and stirred his way to fame and was rewarded by receiving the honor of being a Meilleur Ouvrier de France for his profession. The title is given to those who excel at their skills in France. Delicious libations with clever names like Gravity and Iron Man are a huge hit, as is their Caviar Martini. Great people watching can be done from the “see and be seen” Le Café that is located right on the prime real estate sidewalk along the Champs Elysées. Seasoned, friendly waiters in distinct red aprons are adept at knowing which clientele require fast service for a quick business lunch or hang back and allow “ladies lunching” to savor time together chatting over a glass of vintage champagne. As with all of the Lucien Barrière Group properties, guests are treated as VIP’s. At Fouquet’s no request is too small and gastronomy appetites are well fed. Four Seasons George V As a brand, The Four Seasons is consistently superb. The classically French, quintessentially Four Seasons George V is definitely en pointe. Every visit I am pleased to experience a different facet of this awesome property. Whether it is a fresh color scheme and fabric change in the rooms or seasonal flowers brightening up the public spaces, George V is a leader in style and grace. Each time I stay at the George V it seems something new and exciting is added to the repertoire. A hands-on shaker and tasting class with acclaimed mixologist Grégory Hazac offered me an opportunity to learn the trade secrets from the master behind Le Bar. My favorite concoctions throughout my visit included a ruby red Vodka based drink Sympathy for the Devil, and a refreshing but naughty sounding Rum and Ginger Beer cocktail called, In bed with George. It was quite an oenophile adventure into the wine cellar where 50,000 bottles and 2,500 different labels lay at the proper angle on ancient racks begging to be decanted. I toured the cellar and was treated to a tasting like no other, sipping the finest reds, whites and blends from all over the world (and some French of course) by candlelight while savoring gourmet puff pastries, aged cheeses and charcuterie. I left the most expensive bottle for the readers of Upscale Living to order – a 1982 Petrus priced at 23,000 Euros. Four Seasons, worldwide, is known for their spectacular flower arrangements but the ones in Paris are without rival. Artistic director Jeff Leatham reportedly has 12,000 blooms driven in from Amsterdam each week he uses to create his colorful and audacious, but elegant floral arrangements. A true and generous artist, he periodically shares his talents with guests in small group flower arranging demonstrations.

The rooms are vintage Louis XVI, but not frilly or stuffy. The luxurious bed fabrics were crisp clean neutrals accented with a soft palate. French doors with small balconies provide views of the black and white checkered courtyard below and many have views of the La Tour Eiffel as well. For those of us who have to work on vacation, it is always a plus to have enough space to spread out a laptop and documents. The partner’s desk was both beautiful and functional. It had electrical outlets that accepted both European and American plugs making the use of adapters obsolete. Other small touches that made this hotel room more of a home away from home were the generous sized lighted closets complete with linen/ scarf drawers and the Nespresso coffee bar. To me, hotel artwork can make or break the ambiance of a room. The George V collections made me feel as if I was in a petite Paris museum. Sheer elegance and the ultimate in fine dining, the two-Michelin-star Le Cinq restaurant is the ideal spot for serious business meetings, but equally so for a romantic rendezvous. The service is impeccable! If you are celebrating an important milestone, let the pastry chef know in advance and he will create a memorable dessert to mark the occasion. Relais Christine A foundation for an authentically French vacation lies within the walls of the Relais Christine. The mansion that makes up this distinctive hotel was built on the remains of the Abbey of the Grands-Augustins that dates back to the year 1231. The character of the hotel is based upon the simple premise that guests should feel comfortable, relaxed and well cared-for. Visitors are encouraged to sit by the fire in the winter with a nightcap from the Honesty Bar in the lounge or enjoy the summer sunshine on the terrace porch swing. Located on the quiet Rue Christine in the heart of the charming Left Bank, Relais Christine has spared no expense in interior design. It was interesting to see the range of decoration from one room to the next. Sedate taupe with uncomplicated patterns to the more bold mixtures of royal blue toiles and red floral to the sophisticated black and white stripes and old country maps left me wanting to stay there again just to see what combinations I had missed. Vaulted ceilings remind guests of the historic past, while contemporary amenities like the fitness center, sauna and full-service spa keep guests in present day comfort. Hospitality abounds with a concierge on duty 24/7 who will kindly arrange private walking tours or set you up with a convertible Fiat 500 for a jaunt outside the city limits. Complimentary bikes offer guests the chance to ride the streets along the Seine or down the quaint cobblestone streets near the Sorbonne.

Hotel Vernet One of the coolest things about Paris is that you can be steps away from important landmarks yet be located on a quiet side street. The hip and trendy Hotel Vernet in Paris is a hop, skip and a jump from the Arc de Triomphe but manages to keep a low profile.

are Arc and Champs-Elysees enthusiasts that are looking for a unique modern Parisian experience. As part of the Bessé Signature Collection they are committed to providing guests a rich experience minus the ostentatiousness.

The strong solid wood walls separated the bedroom from the living area in my two-room suite, giving it a bit of a Scandinavian vibe. A true standout was the bathroom décor, easily the coolest interior of any hotel guest bath thus far for me in my 25 year Paris history. Black and white stripe walls balanced well with the double marble vessel sinks and back splash. Gold accented taps, towel warmers, and walls added a touch of glamour to the space.

Little details like discreetly disguised USB plugs next the side of the bed and a commode that rivals any futuristic Japanese contraption (heated seat, washing capability and automatic “clean seat” operation) stand out in the uber competitive market. The ability to have a strong cup of Joe via the Nespresso coffee maker in the room before venturing downstairs for breakfast was an added bonus. Seriously, I remember very little about breakfast itself (other than it was delicious) because the Gustave Eiffel design of the dining room stained glass ceiling and open plan glass-walled kitchen distracted me from the food. I was preoccupied by the juxtaposition of the historical ceiling and the bright colors of the furniture. It was all so wonderful! Next time I am in Paris, I vow to have dinner at The V restaurant just to watch the cooking show unfold while enjoying the chic ambiance. Hotel Vernet is perfect for five-star business travelers who require amenities that will enable them to work more efficiently and for tourists who

BACARDI Gran Reserva

BACARDÍ® Gran Reserva announces an exciting collaboration with critically-acclaimed Chef Ari Taymor. BACARDÍ Gran Reserva is a line of super-premium mixing rums comprised of BACARDÍ Gran Reserva Maestro de Ron, a double-aged white rum which launched earlier this year at the James Beard Foundation Awards Gala in Chicago and industry favorite, BACARDÍ Gran Reserva Ocho Años. Chef Taymor’s cocktails take inspiration from the upcoming fall season, as well as two Taste America stops, Chicago (October 23rd) and Los Angeles (November 6th), which Taymor will attend. The former, one of the chef ’s favorite cities to visit, and the latter, home to his beloved debut restaurant, Alma.

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with a chef of Ari’s caliber,” said Fabio Di Giammarco, Global Vice President, BACARDÍ rums. “BACARDÍ Gran Reserva is all about the experience of enjoying uncomplicated yet sophisticated cocktails. Having Chef Taymor blend his culinary skills with our rums is a perfect way to enhance the connection between food, cocktails and the overall experience.” “I’m very excited to be working with BACARDÍ Gran Reserva,” said Chef Ari Taymor. “As a chef I’m always looking for unique and creative ways to work with different ingredients, and I see limitless possibilities with these incredibly versatile rums, particularly since I drew inspiration from two of my favorite cities.” Taymor’s cocktails are variations of two classics: The Headless Horseman, named after the Halloween legend, is a spiced-up play on a classic Dark and Stormy, which he explains, “Adding carrot eau de vie pulls back on the sweetness while the smoked maple syrup paired with finely ground coffee creates a smooth, authentic finish – it’s a heartier drink that holds up to cold Chicago winters.” His second cocktail, the Siam Daiquiri, is Taymor’s take on his favorite rum cocktail, with a personal touch of Thai aromatics, inspiration stemming from his hometown of Los Angeles and named after its Thai influences.

The DYNAMIQ GTT Grand Turismo Transatlantic

DYNAMIQ has pioneered the translation of Grand touring car philosophy to yachts that offer performance, luxury and range in one package. The Dynamiq series offers top speeds over 20 knots, an enormous sun deck and ocean-going autonomy. Dynamiq has called this new category of yachts Gran Turismo Transatlantic or GTT. Unlike the other yachts that are either fast and relatively uncomfortable with limited range or full displacement with 16 knots of maximum speed, Dynamiq combines the best of both worlds. Its fast displacement hull can carry you from Monaco to Saint Tropez in just over 2 hours or make the trip from Miami to the Galapagos on one tank of fuel. A shallow draft of less than 6 feet (1.75 meters) also makes Dynamiq yachts ‘Bahamas friendly’ and gives much more cruising freedom. The Dynamiq GTT is available in three base models of very manageable size: the 127 foot (38.6 metre) D4 base model and S4 sport version, and the lengthened 132 foot (40 metre) D4 L limousine version. The base model is equipped with latest MAN diesels and Fortjes pod drive propulsion to give a maximum speed of 21 knots, while the D4 S sport version features MTU engines and larger pods for a top speed of 25 knots. In addition, the S4 features carbon fibre styling details to the interior and exterior, model-specific paint options and further interior options not available on the base model. All three models are built in aluminium to the highest standards of comfort, safety and emission control, and feature RINA Comfort Class and Green Star Plus notations as well as LY3 commercial code equivalence. Four or five guest cabin arrangements are available with crew quarters for six crew members. 72 Upscale Living Magazine |

Issue 37 www.upscalelivingmag.com

All of the Dynamiq models are set to deliver Northern European quality standards with a highly attractive price tag. The base price for the D4 model is €13,900,000 ($15,353,245), while the D4 L will start from €14,750,000 ($16,292,113). The D4 S sport version is available from a start price of €15,500,000 ($17,120,525) Dynamiq’s online configurator is a first for the industry and allows clients to select everything straight on the company’s site at www.bedynamiq.com – from the exterior paint scheme with changes viewed in real time on the virtual model to the interior finish, technical equipment, style accents, tender, crew uniforms, toys and even a crew car. The configurator features full pricing for every element, while a running total gives the exact price and delivery date for the customised yacht. This transparency in pricing and delivery schedule is set to revolutionise the way series superyachts are specified and ordered. “Our goal was to create a next generation yacht for a new era – efficient, clean, easy to order and customize. And that’s what Dynamiq is all about,” explains Sergei Dobroserdov, the company’s founder and CEO. In 2014 the keel of the first Dynamiq D4 yacht was laid at NCA shipyard in Carrara, Italy. The yacht is scheduled to be launched and delivered in the summer of 2016. Visit www.bedynamiq.com to learn more about the innovative design and technology used throughout the Dynamiq range, and to customise your own D4 down to the smallest detail online. | By Alina Cabral
