DESIGN BY RESEARCHING

03

INTRODUCTION Tolerance - to be able to link, connect, and suture the parts together. The studio developed the notion of tolerance as a measure of the articulation of physical details in architecture, as well as programmatically, and in terms of the degree of fit of the architectural proposition into an existing urban context. Tolerance is both a question of material; of technical precision and connected to political and social structures at a wider level. Participation - to have a share or to take part. It is a form of being together that enables integrative social and spatial processes, and addresses design, planning, decision making, building and management.

PROJECT 1

MACR O SI TE ANAL Y SI S

SITE New Salak South Village Established in 1952, New Salak South Village was formed by the British government during its waning days. It was an internment camp as a part of the British military implementation of Briggs’ Plan. This was during the Malayan Emergency period, it was to imprison rural civilians away from the then communist resistance. The lifestyle known to them is a “Kampung lifestyle’, a tight-knit community. As time goes by, New Salak South Village has shrunk by size, many lands were taken away from the villagers to make way for the development of Kuala Lumpur. This took a toll on the New Salak South Village as the identity of the community was driven out of town. With that being said, it gives me the idea an opportunity to rejuvenate the Village by using my Architecture expertise and designing a new development which could not only attract local people back into the Village but as well as outsiders to come into this Piece of Village gem in Kuala Lumpur.

HAPTIC ANALYSIS EXPERIENCING THROUGH TOUCH Explored New Salak South Village through the sense of touch. (Haptic analysis) which then was potrayed with what was found on site about salak south through materials surface texture which have different meanings for different surfaces. I have chosen the material concrete as an experimental source as well as material representation for this project Textures of Concrete

Representation

When u see and touch a surface of a concrete that is very smooth and calming, your first reaction would definitely be happy, calm, as well as relaxed, This feeling translates into what i found about the villagers in the village which were very comfortable living in the village and not knowing what is going on with the outside world.

This texture of concrete is used to describe the villagers in New Salak South Village which is not open to idea of the village becoming a developed village hence it dictates how if they still resist, they life in the near future might get a little "bumpy"

This texture of concrete is used to describe the potential future of New Salak South Village if their villagers are not accepting towards the idea of development, which the surface will be very scary to touch, and feel, that's how the economy of the village will be if no action is being taken or done.

PROJECT 2

URBAN STRATEGY

08

URBAN MONTAGE This project was derived from all of group members' findings of Salak South based on their own assigment 1 which then is made into a combination of urban montage This is to negotiate findings between peer's to understand and learn moe of the site from one another.

U R B A N ST R A T E G Y

In accordance to the findings derived from the previous projects, New Salak South Village has been considered a "slowly dying" village. This is due to the lack of ingress of people from the outside world as well as younger generations moving out of the town. If this persist, the village might become an abandoned town in the near future. Hence giving me the idea and opportunity to propose and make this town a more developed town. To safe the strategically placed gem of Kuala Lumpur from being abandoned completely.

Idea Development In relation to Project 1, Haptic Analysis, the idea of creating a new development which requires a lot of hands on activities were developed. I wanted to create a space not only being called a community space just for the sole purpose of people gathering there, but connecting and breaking the barrier between the younger and older generation with an activity that everyone likes and kids can get dirty with, which is arts.

VENICE BIENNALE Venice Biennale, Italian Società di Cultura la Biennale di Venezia, international art exhibition featuring architecture, visual arts, cinema, dance, music, and theatre that is held in the Castello district of Venice every two years during the summer. The Biennale was founded in 1895 as the International Exhibition of Art of the City of Venice to promote “the most noble activities of the modern spirit without distinction of country.”For more than 100 years the Biennale concentrated on showcasing four areas—art, theatre, music, and cinema—but in 1998 it expanded to include architecture and dance.

Proposal to make a development which is similar to the "Venice Biennale" event (held every 6 months), but with a twist. Abandoned buildings will be utilized for exhibition purposes, arts classes will be held throughout the year and many more.

Strategy

Marking where the open green areas are for potential main event space as well as connecting open-recreational spaces to reduce the drag of walking a long distance.

1. Marking of green open space areas on site

LA MERAVIGLIA ART COMPLEX

16

Art complex proposal which does not only act as a place to display art, but as well as learning various types of art, community gathering space and as a tool to break the boundary between 2 generations. Also acts as a connective device in the village. Connecting the village area, institutional area as well as commercial area of salak south through the green sprawl which connects from NW to SE of the whole site.

PROJECT 3

SE L E CT E D S IT E S

NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION In order to help the village economically, the art complex will be registered as a Non-profit organization. This means that the executive committee members will need to be of Malaysian citizens and minimum of up to 7 people. Proposing that the Executive committee members to be given to the villagers themselves which will be the Ketua Kampung and his society. This way, any money collected and recieved from the art complex will be fully under the responsible of the Ketua Kampung in deciding the best way to use it in order to further develop New Village Salak South.

WOVEN FACADE TREATMENT The woven facade has been chosen as the facade treatment for the North wing building is because, it blends in back into nature and surrounding context and represents the symbol of integrity of the village. The material of the facade is a Fire-resistant composite of wood and paper, reinforced with resin. It also represents a basket where anything can be placed inside and kept safely. Metaphorically showing that art is something that needs to be appreciated and safely kept.
