up with a framework that will provide clear pathways and guidance for young (and maybe not so young) students to enter the motor trade as apprentices or trainees and gather the skills required to keep this dynamic business moving forward.

There is no doubt that we have a skills shortage.

MTA general manager of advocacy and training Dougal Morrison was recently quoted in Autofile saying, “there just aren’t enough apprentices coming through, and some who have qualified in the heavy automotive sector are going to the mines in Australia.”

The MTA wants to move the categories of: general mechanics, automotive technician, motorcycle and small

engine mechanics, panel beaters and vehicle painters from the immediate skills shortage list (ISSL) to the long term skills shortage list (LTSSL) held by Immigration New Zealand.

People who meet the ISSL category can apply for skills visas while those on the LTSSL category can ask for work-to-residency visas.

While I think it’s admirable that the MTA is seeking to alleviate the skills shortage for its members by making the path easier for migrants to enter New Zealand, I’d like to see the organisation throw a bit more of its weight behind training our own labour force as well.

Morrison said to Autofile that the MTA’s position is that the number of qualifications should be reduced and nationally recognised, and that it will be having formal discussions with MITO in the future.

Let’s hope the discussions bear fruit, and let’s hope that MITO, employers, and training providers can move forward in the same direction.

Narva opens advanced laboratory laboratory with the latest test rigs, including a high/low humidity test chamber, thermal shock test chamber, rain simulation chamber and a dust test chamber, which have been designed to meet and exceed the most stringent tests required by international vehicle and equipment manufacturers and to ensure total product reliability.

Audi looks into the future

When the Audi factory drivers tackled the Le Mans 24 Hours recently a digital rear-view mirror provided them a clear view of the rear and improved safety.

Aside from the physical and mental strain in endurance racing, life for the drivers is made difficult by the low central seating position and none of the LMP sports cars have a rear window.

The structure of the monocoque plus the mid-mounted configuration of the engine in the Audi R18 leaves no room for a rear window.

“In the past, our drivers had to rely on the outside mirrors, says Head of Audi motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich.

“Yet the rear end and the rear wings plus the vibrations that occur at high speeds significantly limit the field of vision of these mirrors.”

Audi has developed a solution- a

digital rear-view mirror that shows what is happening behind the car on an AMOLED display that it says is better than any conventional mirror.

A small lightweight camera sits behind the antennas on the roof of the Audi R18. It captures the action at the rear on film and transmits the information to the cockpit as digitalised data. This is shown on a screen that sits inside the cabin where an inside mirror is typically located.

“This gives us a whole host of benefits,” says Dr Ullrich. “The operation of the mirror is weatherneutral. When using outside mirrors, heavy water spray severely impairs the driver’s field of vision when it rains.

For the new digital mirror, we worked out various day and night driving modes. Even when a rival approaches from the rear with high-beam headlights on, the image is superb

and not just a glaring light spot.”

This has only been made possible by the latest diode technology.

Instead of conventional light-emitting diodes, an active matrix OLED (AMOLED) display is used. Its name has been derived from organic semiconductors.

AMOLED screens can show multicolored images and offers better resolution thanks to particularly small pixels with diameters of merely around 0.1millimeters. Outstanding image quality and short response time are further positive properties of AMOLEDs. “Even at 330 km/h we’re achieving a fluid image flow in real-time transmission,” says Dr. Ullrich. At this speed, the Audi R18 covers a distance of 92 metres within a single second. As these new types of screens are freely programmable, Audi uses them to display other data as well such as the gear that is currently engaged, the slip level of the tyres, and specific warning lights have

also been integrated into the display.

The digital mirror solution is yet another example of the close meshing of volume production and motorsport. “With respect to the screen and the programming we greatly benefited from the work of our colleagues at AUDI AG’s Technical Development (TE),” says Dr Ullrich.

“The system was initially installed in an Audi R8 in which we tested in road traffic, but now the system functions perfectly in the Audi R18 LMP race car. We integrated the system into the vehicle package in an extremely small space and reduced the aerodynamic effects of the camera and energy consumption to a minimum.

“If the digital rear-view mirror is introduced in production vehicles at a future time our consumers will yet again profit from a system that has been successfully tested in motorsport as well.” reader reply 0120806

Next-generation battery solutions At the March 2012 Geneva motor show, Johnson Controls presented its next generation of lowprofile prismatic lithium-ion cells and sub modules that feature all the components necessary to construct versatile, cost-efficient lithium-ion battery systems.

Visitors to the show could also test drive a Ford Transit Connect Electric and learn more about the company’s full range of energy storage solutions in the Green Pavilion.

Johnson Controls showcased its battery expertise, from start-stop batteries to the prismatic lithium-ion cells for hybrid and electric cars.

“Our next generation energy storage solutions help our customers to deliver more fuel efficient cars to consumers,” says Stefan Suckow, managing director at Johnson Controls. “We’re currently working on making lithium-ion batteries more affordable with the aim of further launching them onto the mass market.”

Sub modules are the electric heart of hybrid and electric cars and represent a key technology for further advancement according to Johnson Controls.

The next generation of sub-modules features prismatic cells as compared to today’s cylindrical cells, requiring less installation space and making

them easier to integrate into cars. The submodules feature all the necessary components such as storage cells, an electric collector system, monitoring electronics, a cooling system and mechanical mounting options. Modular systems are easier to adapt to different cars, shortening development times and making batteries more affordable to produce.

Johnson Controls says it currently has plans to produce sub-modules beginning in 2014, and as part of its application pending under the national showcase project, the company could launch these automatic production capabilities at its Hanover facility in Germany which will help to further reduce battery costs.

Ferrari honours Pininfarina Sergio Pininfarina, the Italian designer whose name is inseparable from Ferrari, recently died in his hometown of Turin.

He was originally called Sergio Farina and was born in Turin on September 8, 1926.

Sergio graduated in mechanical engineering from the Polytechnic of Torino in 1950, and then he began his career in the family firm, Carrozzeria Pinin Farina.

In 1960, he became general manager of the firm. In 1961 he also became managing director, and in 1966, at his father’s death, he took over the chairmanship of the company. In 2006 he became honorary chairman.

In 1961, the President of the Italian Republic, Giovanni Gronchi, changed by decree the name Farina into Pininfarina to honour the family company and to mark Sergio’s personal contribution to Italy.

The President of Ferrari, Luca di Montezemolo, said that Sergio

Pininfarina not only just designed classic Ferrari models, he also played a major role in transforming Italy’s post-war image and developed its global reputation for design excellence.

“Sergio was one of the most important advocates of 'Made in Italy all over the world, a man who gave Italy' credibility,” says Luca di Montezemolo.

Di Montezemolo went on to say that Pininfarina was known for his civic duties as much as his great passion for his country. Pininfarina was the President of Confindustria, a member of the Italian parliament and became a Senator for Life in recognition of his contribution to the social fabric of Italy.

“Calling his relationship with Ferrari legendary is insufficient,” says di Montezemolo.

“First with Enzo, and then with me, he planned some of the most

iconic models, such as the Testarossa or the Enzo, just to name two. We worked together on the Maserati Quattroporte, which remains one of the most beautiful cars ever built.

“Sergio was a great advocate of Italian design, thanks to his sense for elegance. He was part of Ferrari’s board of administration for many years which is I wanted to dedicate a model to him and his son Andrea: the SA Aperta.”

Advances in friction control

Norglide composite bearings are used in the steering yoke to reduce friction over life, improve steering feel, response and performance.

The global automotive market is putting increasing demands on Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to produce high-performance parts that are affordable and long-lasting.

Saint-Gobain performance plastics says it is helping OEMs meet these demands with its range of innovative Norglide composite bearings and Rencol tolerance rings, which it recently displayed at the 2012 Vehicle Dynamics Expo 2012 in

Stuttgart, Germany.

The trend towards increasing efficiencies within the drive train and chassis components helps to bring about savings in fuel and meeting carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction targets.

Saint Gobain says the Norglide composite bearings and Rencol tolerance rings allow the benefits of increasing efficiencies of individual components to be realised by using the materials to control friction and reducing noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

It says that Norglide composite bearings incorporate a thick layer of self-lubricating liner made from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), offering controlled friction values that perform under axial and radial stress to improve NVH reduction. The spring-like qualities of Rencol tolerance rings ensure a tight fit between bearings, shafts and housing, according to Saint-Gobain.

Protrusions running along the circumference of Rencol tolerance rings efficiently absorb NVH transmitted through mechanical joints within a vehicle’s chassis and drive train.

$2.5 million missing A worker at Holden’s Elizabeth, South Australia assembly plant has been arrested, along with six other people in what police are describing as an “inside job” after it was discovered that 140 V8 engines and 175 transmissions worth in excess of AU$2.5 million were missing.

South Australian police have referred to the group as a highlevel criminal network, operating from inside the Holden plant, and have not ruled out the possibility of further arrests related to the crime.

The seven people arrested are facing money laundering and theft charges, and have been bailed to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court in late August.

A press conference held by South Australian police has outlined further details of the long-running investigation into the theft of parts from Holden Vehicle Operations in Adelaide, including the arrest of a Holden employee.

Holden released a statement regarding the event saying that its “inventory tracking and audit systems are robust and in line with global standards.”

The company states that in late 2010 its systems uncovered a number of missing engines that triggered an internal investigation which began before the police operation and ran simultaneously and in conjunction with the police investigation.

By incorporating Norglide composite bearings, dual mass flywheels dampen the vibrations from a car’s engine and prevent vibrations from reaching the gearbox. This results in a more comfortable driving experience for motorists.

By incorporating PTFE in its Norglide composite bearing, Saint-Gobain says it is able to control torque in hinges to exact specifications. Norglide composite bearings can be used on metal frames without compromising painting operations.

Martin Snedden entertains APAA luncheon Martin Snedden gave some interesting behind the scenes insights into last year's RWC and things cricket at the annual APAA (Automotive Parts and Accessories Association) luncheon, which was held at the Ellerslie convention centre on July 18.

Whether it was the propensity of Palmerston North crowds to wear buckets on their heads or his stories of travelling through heartland New Zealand and seeing the engagement of the average Kiwi, such as all the rugby player images on the power poles in Bennydale, Martin bought out some interesting insights into the event.

“I kid you not, the Palmerston North council even bought buckets for the crowd to wear which matched the colours worn by the two teams who were playing a pool game there,” said Martin Snedden. This one of the more entertaining presentations of recently-held APAA luncheons.

Mackay celebrates 80 years This year Australian-based Mackay Consolidated Industries celebrates 80 years in automotive parts manufacturing.

Founded in 1932 by Mr Edward Mackay Paton, Mackay Spares initially supplied replacement parts for the expanding automotive trade from its warehouse premises in Melbourne. The products were predominantly suspension components, especially steel/fabric suspension shackles.

In the late 1930’s Mr Edward Paton sold his interest in PBR (Paton’s Brake Replacements), started by his father and his two brothers (George and Jack), to establish his own company to manufacture rubber auto products, Mackay Silentruba Products.

Its associated engineering company, National Motor Reconditioning (founded in 1928), specialised in automotive engine reconditioning; this later became Mackay Manufacturing Company and became a significant manufacturer of steel suspension components for the automotive trade.

In 1938 Mackay Silentruba Products moved to Richmond and commenced the manufacture of rubber and rubber/metal bonded automotive parts, following obtaining a licence on rubber/metal bonding from Firestone Industrial Rubber Company of Noblesville, Indiana, USA. Mackay was the only company in Australia at the time that could bond rubber to metal and, as a result, become heavily involved in defence manufacture of aircraft components during the Second World War. This established the company as a significant manufacturer of rubber anti-vibration products using a sophisticated electroplating process.

Following the war, Mackay commenced manufacture of a large range of rubber/metal original equipment products for the Holden vehicle released in 1948, especially engine mountings and rubber suspension components. Mackay expanded into automotive coolant (radiator and heater) hoses in 1952. This continues to represent a significant portion of today’s automotive business.

Mackay’s OE (original equipment) business expanded further in rubber hose and mouldings with the commencement of manufacture by successive automotive companies including Ford (1960), Chrysler (1963), Nissan (1976), Toyota

(1976) and Mitsubishi (1980).

During this period the bonding process was changed from electroplating to the use of newlydeveloped proprietary bonding agents (adhesives).

In 1989 the Group, which had grown to 10 operating companies, was consolidated into one company, Mackay Consolidated Industries (MCI), based in Moorabbin, sixteen kilometres south-east of Melbourne.

Today, MCI’s principal business is the manufacture and distribution of a range of rubber and rubber/ steel products to the automotive, trucking, railway, defence, mining, industrial, agricultural, packaging and building industries. Mackay is now the only manufacturer of shaped automotive hoses in Australia, which are manufactured by a world-class continuous in-line extrusion/ reinforcing production line, supplying several Australian vehicle manufacturers.

The company has long-standing technical relationships with global manufacturers of automotive coolant hose and moulded antivibration products, several technical agreements with DSTO regarding defence products, technical information agreements with Australian companies and research organisations and a manufacturing licence from BAe (United Defence LP) for manufacture of specific tank track. Mackay holds marketing agreements for various imported industrial products.

As a founding member of the Australian Automotive Industry, the company has been exporting automotive components to the US for many years with steady

sales increases achieved during this period. More recently, export success has also been found in sales to the European and Middle East markets. Mackay also exports Industrial and Defence products internationally and its export markets include New Zealand, the Pacific, USA, Central America, Singapore, Japan and Indonesia.

Since 1992, Mackay has become heavily involved in the development of defence rubber products in association with DSTO (the Australian Defence Scientific and Technical Organisation), particularly for submarine and land vehicles.

Mackay operates a Research and Development Department utilising Ansys FEA modelling and a Unigraphics II CAD system, together with a well-staffed and equipped NATA accredited laboratory to support its product development program, and is connected on-ine to major customers by EDI (Electronic Document Interchange). The company has numerous quality and environmental accreditations and certifications.

Over the last few years Mackay has taken significant steps to modernise its plant and improve efficiency. This includes the installation of new presses, a larger capacity Banbury mixer, knitting machines, high pressure vessels, stamping machines, ovens, washing machines and associated ancillary equipment. The new equipment provides additional capacity, improved production efficiencies and increased output coupled with enhanced levels of quality control.

The recent decision to upgrade to a larger Banbury was driven by both

an increase in business over the short term and forecasts of increased work over the next few years, predominantly in the automotive and defence areas.

In conjunction with the investment in capital equipment upgrades, Mackay has also taken the opportunity to invest in its staff with training designed to improve overall efficiency.

“In these tough times for manufacturers our success has been achieved by focusing on quality and service over a diverse range of markets and not just on price,” says Mackay managing director David Doyle.

“Our deliberate strategy of diversification has paid dividends and assisted us in achieving our budgets in what has been a very challenging time since the onset of the GFC. It’s called DIY car wrap and it can transform a dull motor into a modern art form with a 3D carbon appearance. And, as its name suggests, it can be done by anyone at home in their garage.

Motor Equipment News went along to the official launch of the UHP1 at the Hampton Downs motorsport park, where the tyre’s were fitted to a fleet of BMW driving experience cars for guests to sample on the skid pan and slalom courses.

GT Radial has been supplying BMW driving experience with tyres for more than six months, and chief instructor Mike Eady says with 12 cars on the fleet ,he is grateful for the company’s support, as tyres are an expensive consumable.

“We’re quite particular about the tyres we use. We’ve had good and bad experiences with other brands so I’m blown away by the performance of these new tyres,” says Mike. “They are very good wet handling tyres, it’s hard to break traction.”

The reason for this according to GT Radials is that the UHP1 is an asymmetrical design with a rib-in-chain design which ensures linear stability when the vehicle travels at high speed, and also increased steering response.

An increased number of grooves on the inside of the tyre tread surface facilitates better water drainage and provides better handling and braking performance on wet roads. GT Radials says the big pattern blocks on the outside edge of the tyre tread surface increase its stability and steering control performance.

Fine grooves on the inside of the tyre tread also have good drainage performance, and improves wet braking performance, while on the tyre shoulder, big pattern blocks and transverse grooves that can strengthen the grip force when cornering, says GT Radials.

The difference in the section sizes and pitch permutation on both sides of the tyre further helps to improve handling and reduce noise. The four straight grooves in the tread pattern also ensure efficient water drainage and provide better handling for the driver on rainy days according to GT Radials.

The UHP1 enjoys a new tread formula adopting high band styrene (SBR), nanometer and high distribution silica, which is the key to enhancing the performance of the tyre’s high speed and wet handling.

The benefits of the new generation silica compound includes, reduced rolling resistance, reduced heat generation and increased tread wear, as well as a reduced braking distance of between 15 to 20 percent on a wet surface.

To the Editor, In response to, “Whuch insurer is the best” in your June magazine, I would like to comment as follows: My company is a loss assessment company who undertakes work for a number of insurance companies. I am concerned that the published results of the CRA survey are not a fair and accurate representation of the results.

I understand from the CRA’s website that it has a membership of 600. From the CRA’s publication PanelTalk of May/June 2012, which reported the results of the same survey, I understand that only 151 members responded to the survey. Of those, apparently 28 were negative about Zurich Insurance. Yet Zurich is reported as being rated last. Surely it is more accurate to say that 4.6 percent (28/600) of the membership or 18 percent (28/151) of those surveyed reported problems with Zurich.

Neither is there any information provided about the profile of those who responded to the survey and what roles and interests they have in the industry. Surely this is relevant in determining whether the results are statistically representative and/or relevant.

Mr Pritchard also asserts in the article that the choice to pay for better quality and safety has been taken away from consumers under the current system and asserts that instead, decisions are made by their insurance company, which is focused on making a profit. In my experience, insurance companies are only focused on ensuring that they do get a reasonable deal for their clients and that includes ensuring that there is transparency in the whole process including cost of parts, time taken for repairs etc.

From what I have seen, repairers who have been pulled up for some reason in that process are the ones with the “axe to grind” and the CRA with its method of survey and publishing results runs the risk that it tars insurance companies (and the assessors they use) with a bad brush by reason of giving voice to the minority with an axe to grind. For example, in relation to Zurich, there is simply no information provided by the CRA as to even the profile of the 19/600 of its membership who did report problems let alone the 151/600 of its membership who did respond to the survey. Should consumers really be steered away from Zurich because 3.2 percent of the CRA’s members reported problems with it? Is it not relevant that 96.8 percent of the CRA’s members did not report problems?

If the aim of the survey is to help consumers make more informed decisions and raise awareness of what goes on behind the scenes as Mr Pritchard says, then perhaps the CRA should ensure that there is full transparency of the profile of the survey recipients so that any assertions of bad performance can be judged in a more meaningful way. For example, there have long been allegations of repair “inducements” in the industry (eg. Also if inducements are in place they would have far more impact on a repairer’s view of any particular insurance company than the time taken for payment could ever have.

In my view, if the CRA really wants to inform consumers about the performance of insurance

companies, then it should get involved in a credible audit process including repairers, insurance companies and assessors in order to get and give a fully informed view. Its current system of survey and publishing is too simplistic, steers away from the real issues affecting the industry, and unfairly labels some as “bad” in the process.

I would however mention, there are great repairers outside or are members of the CRA, so therefore the survey is clearly NOT a total reflection of the feedback on either my company or those Insurance Companies mentioned in the CRA survey, who are of course most affected by lack of transparency in the whole repair process.

Inland Revenue has developed a mobile web application that gives people access to a selection of its online services. People can log on and interact with IRD from anywhere at any time.

What does the app offer?

Firstly, People can view and amend their personal details on file with Inland Revenue,

They can view current-year tax deductions from your salary or wages, and those with Working for Families tax credits or child support arrangements can view their entitlements.

As mentioned above, People can register for and activate their online services account. Once they have an account, they’ll not only get access

to the app, but also the complete IRD range of services.

Finally, people can use the app to reset their user ID and password.

IRD is working hard to add to and improve its online services because many of its customers find interacting with IRD online is faster and more convenient than contacting it by phone, or filling out paper forms. The app is a natural extension of the IRD online work programme and recognises that busy people increasingly want to use their mobile devices to handle their personal and financial affairs.

After a period of time, IRD plan to review user feedback and upgrade the app to include more features.

The SAE-A has added two award categories for the 2012 competition to foster emerging student talent and emphasise their critical role in the future of the automotive and transport industries. The new student awards are for undergraduate engineering projects and post graduate work.

Now in their sixteenth year, the SAE-A Awards recognise excellence in automotive and transport engineering, manufacturing, design and quality.

Hankook’s better balancing act An innovative new tyre which strikes a better balance between environmental concerns, fuel economy and safety has been launched by Hankook.

Hankook says its Kinergy Eco uses cuttingedge tyre compound technologies to reduce rolling resistance by 12 percent compared to an equivalent conventional tyre.

At the same time Kinergy Eco improves wet braking distances by eight percent compared to other low rolling resistance (LRR) tyres in its class.

Correct clearance is critical There is a growing number of timing belt and component failures on popular Subaru engines according to Gates Australia. More specifically, the nature of the failure indicates an exposure of the tensioner unit and idlers to extreme heat.

In some cases, the heat is so severe that it has melted the top cover of the timing belt.

This extreme heat results in the failure of the automatic tensioner, influences the timing belt to ‘jump teeth’, and

ultimately cause serious engine damage.

Bolt

A large number of Subaru models (particularly with manual transmission) are fitted with a timing belt guide plate which is located directly above the crank shaft pulley.

The purpose of the guide plate is to prevent belt ‘tooth jump’, and as such, is positioned very close to the timing belt, according to Gates.

Having said this, upon installation, the rotation of the bolts which secure the guide plate to the engine naturally forces the guide plate down towards the belt. If the guide plate is installed too close to the belt or if the bolts on the guide plate aren’t tightened correctly, the plate can make contact with the timing belt cover (see diagram below).

Any contact between the guide plate and belt, and/or an incorrect clearance between the timing belt and guide plate, will cause friction and generate excessive heat. This extreme heat will compromise the bearing’s lubricant and lead to bearing seizure/failure.

How to avoid the problem:

Unless special care is taken to ensure that the correct clearance is achieved between the timing belt and guide plate, this failure mode will occur. In addition to this, the correct clearance needs to be achieved consistently across the FULL arc of the guide plate.

Given the complexity and the limited space in the engine bay of this vehicle, it is extremely difficult to achieve the correct clearance through visual inspection (unless the engine is removed from the vehicle). As such, Gates says it has created an innovative, new and specifically designed gauge to help automotive technicians achieve the correct clearances required. This gauge is called ‘The Gates timing belt spacer tool’.

The Gates spacer tool is Australian design registered with a patent pending, and is specificallydesigned to assist the automotive technician achieve correct and even clearance between the timing belt and guide plate in the affected Subaru applications. Bogaard says its turbo timers are the market leader in turbo engine protection. It says the timers provide a reliable and foolproof method of allowing the engine and its turbocharger to cool down; extending operating life and reliability, at a fraction of the cost of repairs.

for the specific chassis,” he says “Many factory shock absorbers perform differently throughout the range of their stroke. When a vehicle’s ride height is lowered significantly it is often necessary for the shock to be shortened to suit – not only to retain spring captivity but to ensure a safe, comfortable ride and to avoid premature failure of the shock through bottoming out,” says Kris Taunt. “This is where the internal valving of the shock collides with the base of the shock body.”

Taunt recommended that with any vehicle modification to suspension or engines, it is wise to plan ahead and discuss the best ways of achieving the desired results with the necessary specialists before carrying out any work.

In our performance feature last year, Dodson Performance sales manager Andy Wakelin said that the ‘stance’ trend is certainly opening the door for performance suppliers to sell adjustable suspension arms and wheel spacers, but he warns that vehicles do need to have certification to run coil over suspension and that wheel spacers must be hub-centric.

The fitting of aftermarket suspension and steering components generally does not require the vehicle to get a Low Volume Vehicle Certification (LVVC), unless those components constitute a significant departure from the OEM design, or are not specifically intended for a particular vehicle.

Modifications such as aftermarket adjustable suspension systems, wheel spacers and very low springs that reduce the vehicle’s structural ride height below 100mm ground clearance, usually fall foul of WOF conditions and are therefore subject to the provisions of a Low Volume Vehicle (LVV) inspection.

Any modification outside the WOF, which require a LVVC, may be challenged by the LVV inspector. For example, the inspector may request the credentials of the person who did welding work, to establish the weld’s integrity. In addition, the work the technician does carries certain obligations: The obvious issues surrounding modifications to are safety and legality. The failure of steering and suspension components can have serious consequences.

Unsafe modifications such as cut springs, which are often not retained in their seats, are a common cause of the police officials ordering vehicles off the road.

Even those people who perform professional modifications should be aware that they can be liable for failures either commercially or criminally.

Autolign product manager Kris Taunt says that any person who embarks on a programme of significant performance modifications should consult a qualified company or person to ensure their requirements are actually feasible.

“Most people who go down the performance route will choose to use an adjustable coil over kit which has a shock and spring package designed to work together

An engine needs an optimal supply of air and fuel, the right condition for igniting this mixture to maximise the combustion process, and a fast, effective way to get rid of the burnt air-fuel mixture.

Because turbochargers and re-chipping are subject to LVVC, it is much easier to be sure of knock-on effect and these modifications are therefore safer. However, breathing and fuel delivery modifications to naturally aspirated cars that keep HP increase under 20 percent are trickier, because even these modifications have the potential to impact on the engine’s health and longevity.

Fuel control is critical in a high-performance engine.

But if things go even slightly awry in the combustion chamber, it can destroy an engine. Modifications to the breathing capacity and fuel delivery side, whether via modified carburettors or EFI systems, can easily unbalance the stoichiometric condition, which is dependent on exactly the right amount of air versus the exactly right amount of fuel versus the RPM, engine load, and engine temperature.

Too little air leads to a rich fuel mixture that burns incompletely and therefore does not release all the energy in the fuel. Too much air leads to a lean fuel mixture that burns too quickly, spends its energy too soon, and creates too much pressure too quickly. This can cause irreparable damage to the engine.

To adjust the EFI to suit a modified engine, the best – if expensive – option is to fit a fully-programmable aftermarket ECU that allows the user to reprogram the ECU as changes are made.

However, reversion can neutralise the best efforts to optimise the first three strokes of the Otto cycle.

The nature and degree of restrictions in outbound airflow, chiefly a function of the exhaust header, the catalyst converter, and the muffler, will determine the degree of reversion.

Anti-emission legislation requires a catalyst converter on street cars, but fitting a free flow exhaust header and free flow exhaust mufflers, although subject to noise limits, can significantly reduce reversion.

A naturally aspirated car modified with a new exhaust system does not need LVVC, provided the 20 percent rule is honoured. In addition, the system must not be constructed or modified in a way that allows a person to interfere readily with its operation or reduce its effectiveness. Furthermore, if these modifications result in an increased noise output that is still clearly below noise limits as determined by the NZTA, a LVVC is not required. reader reply 0120825

An absolute stunner

Overwhelmingly positive comments from fans and exhibitors about the 2012 CRC Speedshow indicate that the show’s developer and promoter, Keith Sharp, is on the money when he says this was the best show yet.

The sixth edition of the Speedshow celebrated all things automotive and this year’s sold-out show took place at Auckland’s ASB Showgrounds over the weekend of 21 and 22 July.

With the New Zealand Hot Rod Association’s 50th anniversary hot rod show providing a hugely popular star attraction in addition the Speedshow’s traditional action-packed line-up, Sharp says he’s confident the show attracted a good 10 to 20 percent more visitors than last year where nearly 24,000 people enjoyed the autofocused event.

“Saturday was busy all day and despite the rain on Sunday, it was also a great day. The Ezybuy Car Auctions jet pack with American pilot Nick Macomber at the controls still flew, the D1NZ star drifters had an awesome time going sideways in the wet and at times the display areas were literally shoulder-to-shoulder,” says Sharp.

“While walking around, I saw people six-deep at the Meguiar’s counter buying their car care products, and the team from Venom Roadsters in Tauranga were delighted to sell one of their sleek two-door roadsters which are hand-built in South Africa. We’ve had numerous exhibitors keen to book their trade space for the 2013 show, which will again run in July.

“I think the show looked the best it ever has; it’s truly an international-class event. Our exhibitors, once again, made a fantastic effort with their displays and had some fantastic show specials for people to make the most of – there were a lot of products, cars and bikes sold over the weekend!”

The good oil

Robert Barry talks to oil and lubricant suppliers and users about the various issues facing franchise and independent service centres.

Diesel Services Ltd director Mike Hurley wears two hats. Wearing one hat, he runs a specialist Bosch Diesel Centre workshop in Penrose and with the other he is also a major distributor for the Caltex range lubricants in Auckland, so Mike has a unique understanding of the current market and is well qualified to talk about the issues facing the local automotive service industry.

These issues are: • Lack of product knowledge and education amongst

independent service centres.

Lack of product support and warranty from some oil and lubricant suppliers.

• The use of incorrect lubricants in petrol and diesel engines reducing the efficacy of emission systems and causing premature failure of diesel particulate filters.

In Mike’s opinion when choosing their oil and lubricant supplier, workshop owners and managers must consider the product knowledge and support offered by the supplier as well as the specification of the products, the price and the service delivery.

“Workshop owners need to know that they are getting the right product at the right time, and that the price is competitive but not necessarily the cheapest,” he says.

“We can meet people’s expectations with a sense of urgency while being flexible and responsive, and we provide local knowledge and speedy delivery which is valued by our customers.”

Mike cautions workshop owners against seeking the cheapest available bulk drum oil, when for the sake of around $100 more they can purchase a quality branded product which has a detailed specification printed onto the drum.

“There’s a lot of cheaper product floating around

which has a lower specification, and the wrong oil such as 10w/30 is going into a lot of vehicles when a 10w/40 semi synthetic is needed.”

“If you’ve purchased a bulk drum of oil and the grade is handwritten in marker pen rather than a printed label with a compete description of the grade and specification, do you really know what you have bought and do you have complete confidence in the product?

“How do we as an industry educate people about the importance of understanding the lubrication needs of modern vehicle’s especially those which are fitted with diesel particulate filters (DPF) which must be filled with a low-SAPS oil to prevent blockages and engine failure,” says Mike.

In Mike's opinion, its imperative that independent service operators need to become more aware of the different lubricants now required for both highcompression turbocharged petrol and diesel engines.

“We recently held a trade customer evening event to discuss how many diesel vehicles in particular are being filled with the incorrect lubricant and what the ramifications are. We stressed the importance of checking the vehicle owner’s manual to ensure the right specification of oil is being used.

“Failure to use the correct semi synthetic or low saps oil in a common rail diesel engine fitted with a DPF, will result in the failure of the DPF almost immediately if the engine is completely filled with the wrong oil, or it may happen over time as an owner tops up the engine with an inferior oil and dilutes the efficacy of the low saps oil,” ne says.

diesel engines used in Jaguar and Range Rovers is not available in bulk quantities because it has such high specification and grading he says.

Castrol also supplies Magnatec Professional 5w/30 for the older vehicles such as the E-Type Jaguars, which Matt says is good graded oil that has the quality to enable the older engines to function well without presenting any issues. The older XJS V12 engines need a slightly different specification and Matt says it’s not an issue to source different oils for the older Jaguars that arrive in the service bay.

“We look after vehicles from 1970 to 2012, so our lubrication needs are quite diverse,” he says.

Matt says that buying the cheapest oil is not the best strategy for any service operator, because if it’s cheap something has to be compromised.

“Verification, clarification, back up and support is necessary from an oil supplier, and these were the key areas sought when choosing Castrol lubricants.”

Castrol provides Archibald and Shorter Roverland with technical support and oil sample analysis when the service department is attempting to analyse any mechanical issues, and in the past seven years there hasn’t been any claim back for oil failure according to Matt.

“The independent garages must guarantee their work, and that the vehicle is serviced properly and fit for purpose. If in doubt they can always seek genuine oil, filters and advice from an authorised service agent, because they would be negligent not to use the correct specification of oil and filters in the customer’s vehicle,” he says.

“If a vehicle is serviced outside the dealer network it can present warranty issues if serviced incorrectly, however where an owner cannot get to a dealership, we can and have supplied the right oil, filters and information to an independent garage looking after a late model vehicle.”

Local support preferred Quattra Mechanical in Auckland is a specialist independent diesel service centre which looks after a diverse range of machines from a one-cylinder plate compactor through to 10-tonne trucks and earthmoving plant.

Much of the trade at Quattra Mechanical is focussed on light to medium Japanese trucks in the 8 to 10 tonne category, and the company provides complete fleet maintenance for local customers.

Quattra mechanical service manager Graham Skinner says the company changed to Valvoline as a supplier because he wanted to deal with a locally staffed company rather than an overseas call centre.

“We have a policy of supporting locally-run companies such as Valvoline who offer the quality, supply and service we wanted,” he says. “While the pricing is comparable to other brands, it is the service and support that we enjoy from the local Valvoline distributor that keeps us loyal to them.

“They do provide oil analysis, not that we have a great call for it, and the website is a great resource when I’m looking for oddball lubricants particularly for the newer European trucks that have Euro 5 engines and emission controls.

“It’s important to check that you are using the right lubricants in the trucks, and the Valvoline website is a very useful resource.”

Graham says Quattra Mechanical uses Valvoline 15w/40 and 15w/40 LE (low ash) diesel lubricants as well as hydraulic oil, gear oils, engine coolant, greases, brake clean and lube spray in its workshop.

Avenue Motors services passenger cars and light commercials as well as high-performance engines for Jet Boats, Super stocks and Drag racing cars, which is how the relationship with Gulf Western first developed.

“We were given some race oil to trial, so we put it into a jet boat engine which previously was burning its bearings after every race meeting,” says Russell.

“Using the Gulf Western racing oil, that particular engine lasted two seasons and 33 meetings without needing a bearing change, in fact the owner was three quarters of the way through his first season when the oil pressure dropped because the lubricant hadn’t been changed.

“Considering the engine oil temperature gauge registered 300 degrees C and the engine was revved to 8,500rpm, the engine was in good condition, despite the punishment.”

Russell says he changed all the oils and lubricants to Gulf Western on the basis of this performance and the company uses 15w/40 in all oil changes for passenger vehicles. He has never needed to do an oil analysis

nor does he add any zinc or other additives to the Gulf Western product.

“We looked after a Toyota V8 engine that was used in a Super Stock car for five seasons, we had no issues using Gulf Western product, there were no burnt bearings, we simply pulled the sump off, checked the engine and put it back together.

“I did notice that we pulled the engine apart, the internals were very sticky and I can only put this down to the quality of the oil formula.

“Overall I’m very happy with the Gulf Western product, it’s well priced and its performance is comparable if not better than the major brand we used previously.”

The right stuff Continental Car Services Volkswagen service manager Scott Hobson started working with the company more than a decade ago and says that the dealerships relationship with Mobil lubricants probably goes back further.

“We used Mobil Formula S2 10w/40 semi synthetic for our turbocharged and non-turbocharged petrol

engines, while the Mobil Formula V 5w/30 goes into most turbo diesel engines, and specific models require Mobil ESP long life lubricant.”

Scott stresses the importance of using the correct low ash (low saps) lubricants particularly for modern high compression direct injection turbo diesel engines which are fitted with a diesel particulate filter (DPF).

Failure to use the right oil during an oil change can ultimately lead to the expensive failure and replacement of the DPF. While CCS Volkswagen enjoys its relationship and service from Mobil, Scott points out that the company solely uses them as an engine oil supplier. All other lubrication products such as transmission fluid, gear oil, coolants and hydraulic fluids are sourced directly from Volkswagen.

“Volkswagen really look after the cars, even the out of warranty vehicles, hence we stick with the genuine product for all lubricant other than engine oil. We find the service from Mobil to be outstanding, we’ve never needed to have an oil analysis using their product.” reader reply 0120830

Liqui Moly from Speed

The German motor oil and additive brand Liqui Moly will become available in New Zealand for the first time. It is being imported and distributed by European car parts specialist Speed of Tauranga.

Liqui Moly says its motor oils have official approval from all notable car manufacturers. This allows workshops to ensure that the warranty entitlements of car owners are protected. Pouring in the wrong motor oil is like fitting the wrong part. It can cause oil sludge, increased wear and even major engine damage. Friction proofing from Wynn’s With so much focus being put on lowering emissions to protect human health and the planet for future generations, the levels of zinc or ZDDP (Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate) in automotive oils is being reduced, according to Wynns.

The reason for this is that zinc contains phosphorus, and when phosphorus reaches components in the exhaust system such as oxygen sensors and catalytic converters, it can impair their performance. Often you may hear about “the poisoning of a catalytic convertor” as this is where the phosphorus bonds to the catalysts surface and the catalyst can no longer do its job. This leads to higher emissions which is bad for the environment and ultimately human health. New performance categories of lubricants such as API SN ILSAC GF-5 or ACEA C categories have limits to the level of phosphorus allowed to ensure an effective emissions system life.

Zinc is a family of compounds been used in engine oils for decades due to its effective performance and low

relative cost. It’s a multifunctional additive that minimises oxidation, thus help to ensure a long lubricant life and also reduce wear by creating a sacrificial layer which minimises metal to metal contact. This is why many motoring enthusiasts have become concerned about the use of lowered zinc levels contained in today’s engine oils. Less zinc means less protection to vital components which increases wear and fatigue to high load and stress areas inside the motor.

Shifting up a gear Automatic transmissions have come a long way over time, according to Valvoline.

Valvoline says sophisticated electronic controls, finely-tuned internal components and ever-improving designs have made automatic transmissions more reliable, better performing and most importantly, longer lasting.

Recommended maintenance schedules for cars driven under normal conditions call for ATF inspections every 10,000kms, or six months with every scheduled service, according to Valvoline.

It says many consumers fail to regularly check their transmission oil only reporting major problems. Inspecting the ATF level at every service allows the opportunity for early detection of leaks or fluid usage.

Worn out fluids in the automatic transmission can result in rough shifting, accelerated wear and even failure.

If the transmission doesn’t feel quite right, Valvoline says technicians should consider changing the ATF even if it’s before the recommended service. This could save the customer a lot of money in the long run.

The General Motors specification of Dexron III has been the recommended fluid for GM vehicles for many years. With the advancement of transmission design coupled with the search for improved fuel efficiency and transmission durability, a new lubricant was required. Dexron VI is now specified for current GM vehicles to ensure optimum shift quality and improved fluid and transmission life.

A mature 20 years old

The XJ220 remains the fastest Jaguar ever produced and when launched in 1992, at 342 km/h had the highest maximum speed of any production car. Constructed using advanced aluminium honeycomb, the car was immensely strong and, despite its size, weighed just 1,470 kg.

Originally conceived as a concept car, the XJ220 debuted at the 1988 British Motor Show.

Designed by Keith Helfet, the car was signed off for production in December 1989 with TWR selected as the partner for the project.

Powered by a 3.5-litre, twin turbo V6, the XJ220 channeled its drive through the 18-inch Speedline rear wheels shod in specially developed 345/35 Bridgestone Expedia tyres via a five-speed gearbox and an AP Racing twin-plate clutch. The XJ220 developed 415 kWs and 475 lbs ft of torque to allow it to accelerate to 100 km/h in under four seconds. Braking was supplied by a set of AP Racing discs and four pot calipers.

Built by hand in an all-new factory in Bloxham, Oxfordshire, prototype 001 was completed in 1990 while car 002 achieved 186 mph at Bruntingthorpe in September of the same year. The first customer car was completed in June 1992 with a retail price of 470,000 pounds sterling.

Production ceased in 1994, by which time 275 cars had been built.

The silver car in attendance at the recent Jaguar Experience Day held at the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon is chassis 004, one of 10 pre-production vehicles. This example was used for extensive tyre and high speed testing at Fort Stockton, Texas, in 1991. Andy Wallace achieved a maximum speed of 342 km/h in the car during the testing process.

Once these duties were completed the car was converted to race specification and was campaigned by Justin Law in the British GT Cup. On being retired from racing it was returned to its standard, road-going specification.

The yellow car is an XJ220 S - chassis ‚220-803‘.

This is the very first XJ220 S, built using spare parts from the Le Mans cars, including single-piece carbon fibre front and rear clamshells, revised springs and dampers and a claimed 522 kWs. The luxurious interior of the road car was dropped in favour of Kevlar bucket seats and pared down, carbon trim.

Name change for Chinese vans Australian automotive distributor WMC, has made the decision to change the name of its new range of European-designed, Chinese-manufactured vans to LDV for the Australasian market.

In consultation with SAIC, the change has been made by WMC to avoid a clash of trademarks with an Australian component company which uses the name Maxus for a range of truck and trailer components and consumables.

Acting on behalf of SAIC, WMC has been in negotiations for several months over the use of the Maxus name but has been unable to reach a commercial agreement with the Australian company. Consequently, the decision was taken to use a different name.

According to WMC Group CEO Jason Pecotic, while it is disappointing that the range will not be marketed under its global name, he is confident that the LDV brand will be well received by Australians and New Zealanders, which is the name originally used for the range when it was manufactured and marketed in Europe, prior to SAIC acquiring the brand.

“The vans are manufactured by SAIC in China and sold around the world under the Maxus name.

Whilst we didn’t believe there would have been any confusion, we are excited to be using the LDV name,” says Jason Pecotic.

“LDV reflects the European heritage and design of the vans and we believe buyers will embrace the brand because of the value, engineering quality and equipment levels they will offer,” he says.

The new generation of LDV V80 vans are based on a front-drive platform developed in Britain as the LDV, using the latest generation common rail turbo diesel power plants by Italian maker VM Motori.

SAIC purchased the British commercial vehicle operation and intellectual rights to the van from the company in 2009 and has invested in further R&D and engineering to ensure it meets the latest European standards.

WMC is planning to launch a seven-model range of LDV V80 vans from the fourth quarter of 2012 in Australia with three cargo versions and four passenger models.

The line-up will include a short wheelbase and long wheel base cargo van both with standard roof height as well as a high roof version of the long wheelbase model. The range will feature load capacity of between nine and 14 cubic metres and a payload of up to 1.8 tonnes.

The four passenger van variants will include the 11-passenger short wheelbase with standard roof as well as a 15-passenger long wheelbase variant in either standard roof or high roof configuration and an

11-passenger long wheel base luxury model.

The LDV vehicles will also come with a high level of standard features which are not available or are options on other brands, which supports the high level of build quality, design and positioning of the product.

These standard features include rear barn doors, tyre pressure monitoring, 16" alloy wheels, dual sliding doors and door integrated electric entry steps.

LDV vans meet European crash and safety standards and the VM Motori diesel will attain the latest emission standards. The LDV van suspension and handling has also been tuned by automotive design and engineering consultants in Europe.

The 2.5 litre VM diesel in the Maxus range boasts 100kW of power and 330Nm of torque.

Flexible Acco turns 40 More than 78,000 Acco trucks have been driven out of its Australian manufacturing plant since 1972, and now the design celebrates its 40th year in production.

Designed and built to meet local conditions, Iveco Trucks Australia says the Acco truck stands up to some of the harshest driving conditions in the world. The vehicles handle the many demands, extremes of climate, large loads and poor road surfaces to deliver goods and services.

The Acco range is owned by Iveco Trucks Australia and continues to be produced at the same manufacturing facility in Dandenong, Victoria where it was born.

The Acco first appeared on the drawing board in the early 1960s and the prototype debuted in 1963. The basic shape of the vehicle has remained virtually unchanged throughout its long life. A unique feature of the truck is that since the first Acco prototype, every part of its cab-chassis design has been engineered, designed and made at the Dandenong plant. Through a diverse range of machining and shaping processes, raw sheet metal is converted into the components of the cabin. The plant produces more than 650 Acco trucks annually.

current Acco design in 1972. Today, Reeman is director key accounts, sales division for Iveco Trucks Australia – and still sells all Acco models.

The basic form of the Acco range since the 1970s has been a utilitarian box-shape cab-over, with the engine and cabin co-located over the front axle. Engine servicing for such vehicles is by tilting the cabin.

“The early ones were pretty basic trucks, with few creature comforts for the operators,” says Reeman.

Since the first truck rolled off the line, more than 4,000 design modifications and additions have been made. “Many changes were implemented in response to customer requirements, but also the evolving health and safety legislation. We added air conditioning, different suspensions, insulation and power steering, among many other innovations to suit changing market requirements,” he says.

Acco trucks have a strong and stable design which allows them to withstand the stresses associated with having six to seven tonnes of concrete revolving on its back. The same characteristics also make it an ideal platform for mounting waste handling equipment. The one cabin can be adapted – with factory fitted dual control systems – to support front and rear loading operations as well as side loaders: a key feature of the Acco in its waste management role.

According to Reeman, 2012 is the anniversary of several significant events in the company’s history. “Not only is it the 40th birthday of the Acco in its current shape, it is also the 60th birthday of the Dandenong plant, the 20th anniversary of ownership by Iveco, and the centenary of the company in Australia,” he says. reader reply 0120838

Fieldays 2012 closes on high

Gates closed on the world’s fifth-largest rural sector tradeshow recently with more than 128,000 visitors through the 44th New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays. The final day saw 30,292 gather at Mystery Creek, more than 40 percent up on the previous year’s Saturday. Overall attendance was a nine percent improvement on the 2011 event, which exhibitors and organisers said was greatly pleasing for the effort involved.

When the V8 Supercars return to Pukekohe in April next year, fans will see a whole new breed of car – the so-called Car of the Future. The most visible evidence of the change will be the presence of four Nissan Altimas in what till now has been a straight Ford-Holden battle.

Actually the V8 Supercars are implementing a formula already used in New Zealand by V8 SuperTourers and being introduced by NZ V8s – a race-type chassis and many of the main mechanical components that are “control” items common to all cars, plus the metal bodywork of a big four-door sedan and a V8 engine.

So far the V8 Supercars have been modified – very heavily modified – road cars, though in recent times more and more control components have been introduced to achieve parity of performance between the Falcons and Commodores. One consequence of this approach is that these cars require very unusual driving techniques, which is why international stars often seem to under-perform when they race the Aussie machinery.

V8 Supercar drivers like Greg Murphy who have also raced the V8 SuperTourers say the Kiwi cars are nicer to drive, behaving more like a proper race car. The same will no doubt be true of the new V8

with some bright ideas.

Speaking of the balance of power, this season has seen Ford Performance Racing surge ahead with drivers Mark Winterbottom and Will Davison both winning a number of races. However reigning champion Jamie Whincup struck back and winning both races at Townsville put the Holden star in the lead by 100 points. Standings then were: Whincup 1794, Winterbottom 1694, Davison 1654, Craig Lowndes (Holden) 1496, Shane Van Gisbergen (Ford) 1280, Garth Tander (Holden) 1239, Lee Holdsworth (Ford) 1190, Tim Slade (Ford) 1170, Fabian Coulthard (Holden) 1030, David Reynolds (Ford) 951. Two Kiwis – Van Gisbergen and Coulthard – in the top 10.

The wide-open Pukekohe circuit will have a completely different feel than the Hamilton street circuit. Here Will Davison leads Garth Tander and Jamie Whincup in this year’s event.

Supercars and lap times should drop slightly as the cars handle better through the corners.

In the new V8 Supercars, the Falcons will use Ford engines, the Commodores General Motors engines, and the Nissans a race version of a Nissan road-car engine. Outputs will be controlled to equalise output, probably at something over 600 horsepower. The four Nissans will be campaigned by the Kelly team, which has run Holdens up till now.

Key changes in the new chassis include independent rear suspension – current V8 Supercars have live rear axles - and a rear transaxle gearbox to improve weight distribution. Positioning the engines 100mm further rearwards will also improve the weight distribution, as well as reducing costs in the case of severe frontal impacts.

Wheel size changes from 17 inches to 18 inches, the size used for a lot of serious racing categories like GTs. The diameter of the tyre will not change much, as the new control tyres – still Dunlops – have a lower profile.

The new cars will be safer, too. The fuel tank is moved forward from the boot and sits inside the protective framework of the main chassis. Other safety features include a collapsible steering column, new fire extinguisher system and added side protection, while windscreens will become polycarbonate. The new cars will be about 100kg lighter, which will benefit all aspects of performance.

Teams are in the process of building their cars now, using the chassis supplied as a sort of kitset.

It’s a tough time for them, a lot of extra work during a busy season, and then scrambling to finish the build, test the cars on the track and start to understand how best to set up a whole new car. We can expect the best-resourced teams to do the best job, but it could be that the balance of power will be upset if clever people in the smaller teams come up

Of course the V8 Supercars have raced at Pukekohe before, seven times in fact – 2001 to 2007. Greg Murphy cemented his reputation as the big Kiwi racing hero by winning four of those meetings.

But V8 Supercars was keen to run a street race in New Zealand and the Hamilton street circuit hosted the next five meetings – costing the Hamilton council more than $30 million. When Hamilton fell over, Pukekohe and Hampton Downs vied for the V8 Supercar meeting and Pukekohe won.

It will be a new-look Pukekohe for the return of the V8 Supercars, thanks to a significant upgrade using some of a $10 million package – over the five years of the initial contract – negotiated by V8 Supercars, the Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development, the New Zealand Government, the Auckland Council and Counties Racing Club (which owns the circuit).

These upgrades include: • New safety barriers and debris fencing.

• Resurfacing of much of the track.

• A new chicane on the back straight.

• Additional overhead pedestrian bridges.

• Over-track signage.

• Enhanced viewing areas.

• A general upgrade of the venue’s overall presentation.

The new chicane is an interesting development.

The back straight at Pukekohe is very fast and in its present configuration leads into a hairpin corner,

presenting drivers with what former V8 Supercar champion Mark Skaife calls “the biggest stop in Australasia”. It’s not the safest configuration but it does provide the main overtaking point on the circuit. Introducing the chicane could make overtaking more difficult.

When the Hamilton meeting collapsed V8 Supercars – who will be the promoters for the Pukekohe rounds – bought its infrastructure such as concrete barriers. These are being moved to Pukekohe as part of the upgrade. The upgrade will be permanent so it will benefit many forms of motorsport in New Zealand and indeed some would say the track has been needing a brush-up for a while now.

V8 Supercars chairman Tony Cochrane, who had been so keen to leave Pukekohe in the mid-2000s, waxed lyrical about his series’ return to the circuit.

“Pukekohe is an ideal and proven location,” he said. “The circuit has an amazing history and heritage in New Zealand: for example, it was the venue Greg Murphy made his own with four victories, venue of the New Zealand Grand Prix and has hosted the likes of Stirling Moss and Jackie Stewart.

“It is a terrific layout, has plenty of available space and is just 35 minutes from the Auckland CBD and even closer to the international airport.

With improved spectator and corporate facilities V8 Supercars has no doubt it will again be New Zealand’s premium motorsport precinct, and a boost for New Zealand motorsport year-round.”

However Cochrane is unhappy about V8 SuperTourers staging an international 500km race at Pukekohe in October, with some of the teams aiming to recruit V8 Supercar drivers as co-drivers for the endurance event. Cochrane apparently fears this could reduce the appeal of his event in April and has advised V8 Supercar teams not to let their drivers race here.

But Murphy is an integral part of the V8 SuperTourer series – indeed, he won the first meeting – and he is expected to team up with Fabian Coulthard.

Organisers are hoping that new Kiwi V8 hero Shane Van Gisbergen will take part in the Pukekohe race and the two other endurance meetings, and Andy Booth has announced that V8 Supercar driver Tony D’Alberto will be his partner for the long-distance races. reader reply 0120837a

Alonso dominates in Germany

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso has put in a dominant performance in Germany, starting from pole position and maintaining the lead until the chequered flag in the recently-held German Grand Prix to record his third win of the season and extend his lead in the Formula One drivers’championship.

“It was a very close race from start to finish,” says Alonso. “We did not have the quickest car. McLaren and Red Bull had a little bit extra but not enough to get past. The team took a few strategic decisions that were spot on, at the time of both stops and I knew that I had to concentrate, especially at Turn 6, defending my position by using the KERS. “Clearly, I didn’t have a moment to relax but I think I was calmer than the team in the garage and on the pit wall and our fans sitting in front of their televisions!

“I said that the month of July would be crucial, with 75 points up for grabs in four weeks and so far we have brought home 43, so we will try and finish the job in Hungary.”

His team-mate Felipe Massa was less fortunate: starting in the always risky midfield, the Brazilian was involved in an accident that meant he had to make an immediate visit to pit lane, on the opening lap, to change the nose on the F2012. He worked his way back up to twelfth at the flag.

“It was a very hard race for me because of the problem at the start,” says Massa. “I got away well, but then a Toro Rosso slowed suddenly in front of me and, despite trying to avoid him, I touched him with the front wing. I lost so much time coming back to the pits and my race was practically over

at that point. The tyres worked well, and matched our expectations. A real shame, because again today the car was very competitive, as Fernando demonstrated, having a perfect race to take a well deserved and great win, which is extremely important for him and for the whole team.”

For his third German GP win, Alonso was joined on the podium by Sebastian Vettel, second for Red Bull and Jenson Button, third in the McLaren. However, later events would prove that Mr. Vettel had finished lower down than he thought and that Button was back in second place.

Fernando made the most of the F2012’s great launch off the line and led away almost unchallenged, but Felipe required a nose change at the end of lap 1 following a collision. Hamilton also had to bring the

On Lap 4, Fernando had Vettel’s Red Bull in close formation behind him and then there was a gap of almost four seconds to third placed Schumacher in the Mercedes, and behind came Hulkenberg in the Force India, then Maldonaldo, Webber, Raikkonen, Di Resta and Perez, the Mexican making up up seven places, completing the top ten. Lap 8 and Button got his McLaren ahead of Hulkenberg to take fourth. Button then passed Schumacher for third on Lap 10, as Di Resta began the first run of pit stops. At the front, Fernando had a 1.3 lead over Vettel, while Felipe’s early troubles saw him down in 19th place.

Lap 12 while Maldonaldo came in from sixth on Lap 13 in the Williams. Schumacher pitted on lap 14 from fourth place in the Mercedes, coming out to get the better of Hulkenberg, which also saw Raikkonen get past the Force India. Fernando ran a bit wide at a corner on Lap 17 so the team brought him in immediately for his first tyre change on the F2012, taking on the harder Medium tyres for a longer second stint. Lap 19 and Button brought his McLaren in, followed by Ricciardo in the Toro Rosso.

Vettel pitted on Lap 20 which meant he was still second, 3.3 seconds now behind Fernando, while Sauber’s Kobayashi was third, the only driver who had not yet changed tyres until he eventually came in on lap 22. Felipe came in from 16th place on Lap 24 to change tyres.

In this part of the race, it seemed that 2012 German Grand Prix Results Vettel was faster than the Spanish Ferrari 1. Sergio Perez Mexico Sauber-Ferrari +0m 27.8s gave Fernando a bit of breathing space 7. Michael Schumacher Germany Mercedes-Mercedes +0m 28.9s

as the gap went back to 1.1. Profiting from this Spanish-German battle was Jenson Button in third, who had brought his McLaren to within 2.8 seconds of the Red Bull and was lapping faster than the leaders. On Lap 34, just over half-distance, Felipe was having a lonely race in fourteenth. Lap 35 and now Fernando’s mirrors went from blue to silver, as although well down the order, one lap down, Hamilton, on fresher tyres, got his McLaren ahead of Vettel to take station behind Alonso. Schumacher was the first of the front runners to make his second pit stop from fifth place on lap 36. Lap 41 and Button pitted, followed by Perez from fifth and Webber from eighth.

The next lap was a key moment as Fernando dived into pit lane with Red Bull covering the Ferrari move bringing Vettel in at the same time. But as the two men emerged from pit lane, Button was able to pull alongside the German to take second place, with the three leaders all on the Medium tyre and set to go all the way to the chequered flag. Button was now close enough to use DRS and with 20 laps remaining, the McLaren was effectively riding on the Ferrari’s rear wing, while further back, Felipe made his third and final stop on Lap 48. While Vettel drifted back from the leading two, Button was only 0.6 seconds behind Fernando with ten laps remaining, but after dealing with some backmarkers, Fernando managed the gap, extending it enough to look comfortable for the final laps. However Vettel had put together a late charge and on the penultimate lap, he got past the McLaren, using rather more than just the race track to do so to take second place. However, after the race, the Stewards penalised Vettel with a 20 second penalty as they deemed his move on Button had contravened the rules. This dropped him to fifth, with Button takeing second place. So although he never saw the podium, Kimi Raikkonen actually finished third for Lotus, with Kobayashi moved up to fourth in the Sauber.

Red Bull still heads the constructors’ classification, with the Scuderia second, slightly closer to the leaders and pulling further away from McLaren in third.
