serviced their vehicle. Based on the service label that is usually affixed to the windscreen, only 39 percent of vehicles appeared to be up-to- date with their servicing. The distance by which vehicles were beyond their scheduled service point, ranged from just a few hundred to nearly 80,000 kilometres; the most common were between 2,500 and 5,000 kilometres. On a time basis, that ranged from just a few days through to a worst case of 1,043 days; the average time being 175 days overdue. I feel this is a true indicator of the economic pressures that most New Zealanders are facing. More often than not, servicing and maintaining the car becomes less important as discretionary income disappears. But the question begs as to how the motor industry educates the public to invest in their cars and keep themselves and their families safe? Best wishes for a warmer August (hopefully)

Welcome to the August issue of Motor Equipment News. As I write this, a cold southerly has brought a very cold snap across New Zealand and with it, no doubt a few recovery services from motorists with dead batteries or other problems. The worst of the winter weather is always a timely reminder to motorists to keep up the maintenance of their vehicles. It was interesting to receive a recent email from the MTA about a survey of 500 vehicles it carried out in April at 25 service stations across the country and looked at a range of vehicle ownership issues, including servicing history. Of the 500 vehicles surveyed, 50 percent of respondents didn’t have their vehicles regularly serviced. The survey included recording the service label information in each vehicle, as well as a short series of questions that looked at who actually carried out the servicing on each individual vehicle. When asked how their vehicle was serviced, 81 percent said at a garage, with a further 16 percent claiming they serviced the vehicle themselves. Just one percent of drivers admitted having never

Gulf oil launched in New Zealand

Legendary 110-year old oil brand Gulf is making its first appearance on New Zealand shores thanks to a deal by ANZPAC Oil, a subsidiary of South Island

farming co-operative CRT. ANZPAC will be distributing Gulf products through its 31 Caltex and Challenge service stations

throughout the South Island and is currently working on a deal with a North Island farming co-operative, as well as Repco and Supercheap Auto to get the distinctive orange and blue brand into the north. The CRT co-operative, the largest independent fuel distributor in New Zealand, acquired the rights to distribute Gulf not only in New Zealand, but also the Pacific Islands and Australia. At the North Island launch, held at the Hampton Downs motor racing circuit, CRT chief executive Brent Esler said that CRT Fuel distributes bulk fuel nationwide and it has lacked a credible lubricants offer for customers to buy. “Gulf provides an answer to what was increasingly becoming a constraint on our business,” says Mr Esler. As part of its plans to establish the brand in New Zealand, CRT has revived the historic link between Gulf and Kiwi racing legend Bruce McLaren, by establishing a relationship with the Bruce McLaren Trust. Gulf sponsored Bruce McLaren at the height of his success in Formula One and Can-Am, from 1967-70. reader reply 110803

NEWS A letter to the publisher from the Motor Industry Association received 21 July 2011 Dear Cathy Following publication in a recent edition of Motor Equipment News of an article promoting “Impulso Diesel Tuning Chips”, I was contacted by a number of members, representing light and heavy diesel vehicles, expressing their concerns about misleading and incorrect statements in the promotion of these chips. I have been asked to contact you specifically around three statements in the article being:1) “A diesel tuning box can in most cases be fitted and removed very easily and won’t cause any warranty issues” and “For the vast majority of vehicles, it is easy to fit/remove so ideal for warranty purposes.” These statements imply even if an engine malfunction occurs any factors relating to the tuning chip will not be traceable - presumably because the chip is removed before the vehicle is presented for a warranty claim. This is potentially misleading and may promote, or at least condone, fraudulent behaviour. 2) “Vehicle manufacturers are forced to compromise when they set up the engine’s ECU, to create a vehicle which

will operate in a wide variety of markets and conditions.” Most vehicles are engineered to comply with local regulations. To state their performance is compromised by unnecessary compliance requirements is unsubstantiated and in MIA member cases is simply incorrect. Further it implies that additional tuning is harmless and can be undertaken without consequences. The assumptions that these statements seem to want the reader to make is that the vehicle can be modified with impunity and without risk. They imply the manufacturer will not be aware of any ECU interference. MIA members have become aware of certain engine failure types that are uncharacteristic on a standard engine and strongly linked to ECU tampering using such devices. It is simply not correct to claim that the vehicle warranty will not be affected and in many cases warranty claims have been denied by MIA members where they suspect the failure is directly linked to the use of these chips. Cathy, the MIA and members are surprised that your publication features products that are marketed in this potentially careless way. Furthermore the MIA is very concerned around the tampering with emissions systems. We have approached MOT and

NZTA officials asking they alert vehicle inspectors about this and in cases where an unauthorised tuning chip is detected require that the vehicle undertakes an emission test to confirm on-going compliance with the original certification of the vehicle. Please feel free to use in full or any part of this letter to publicise the new vehicle industry’s response to the unsanctioned use of tuning chips. Yours sincerely, Perry Kerr Chief Executive Officer

The response from Publisher Cathy Parker: Dear Perry, Re Impulso Diesel tuning chips article – Motor Equipment News Thank you for drawing our attention to your member concerns regarding the contents of the article. We would certainly be more than happy to convey these points to our readers in a follow-up piece. We would agree that the article could give the impression that the chip could be removed to “fool” a manufacturer if there was a warranty issue that might be related to the chip, and are interested in following up your comments about engine failures and rejected warranty

claims. There is wide range of similar chip products on the market and we are aware of a number of franchise dealers that either have or do sell and fit them. Again there are issues on both sides of this. Certainly it is a fact that the tuning of vehicles is done to achieve certain goals and different tunings are available to suit different requirements whilst staying within compliance parameters. The manufacturers themselves often offer alternative outputs achieved by changing the chip mapping or using a different chip. We are somewhat surprised around the comments related to emissions testing and compliance as our understanding is that whilst a vehicle must comply at point of importation, other than the visual smoke tests there are no ongoing service requirements in New Zealand in relation to emissions of vehicles in the fleet (whether this is desirable or not is another topic). Again if you have different information we would be pleased to further our knowledge. Perry, we are more than happy to publish the MIA’s response to the article. Yours Sincerely

Cathy Parker PUBLISHER

Celebrating 75 years in high style

Caltex marks its 75th anniversary this year, and the milestone is being celebrated in style. More than 240 employees and annuitants, retailers, distributors, business and community partners gathered at Auckland Museum for a Caltex 75th Diamond Gala to honour the company’s history and showcase its future in New Zealand and across the region. For more than 75 years, Caltex has become embedded in the New Zealand experience. Earlier in 1922, a predecessor brand, Texaco, supplied the asphalt used to build the country’s first paved road; fuelled the first airmail flight in 1931 and was the exclusive fuel supplier for Lincoln Ellsworth’s historic trans-Atlantic flight to the South Pole. The Caltex name first appeared in 1936 as a joint

venture operation selling motor spirits, lubricating oils and kerosene to dairy companies, stock firms and country grocers. In the post-war years, the brand expanded across Asia, Oceania and Africa to more than 50 countries, building more than 800 service stations featuring its trademark bright red star. Over the years, fuel and oil quality has developed and improved, including generations of ‘I.C. Plus Petrol’, ‘Boron’, ‘Vortex’, ‘CX’ and ‘Custom Five Star Motor Oil’. In the 1970s Havoline and Delo products blazed into new markets. In 1996, the brand moved to its new-look fivepoint star, while service stations featured bright canopy lighting that welcomed a new generation of increasingly mobile motorists. In 2006 Caltex started rolling out its latest innovation, Techron and Techron D performance additives for petrol and diesel engines. Among those celebrating a long history with Caltex are Reece and Christine Lewis, owner-operators of Caltex Stokes Valley in Lower Hutt, a family run business that goes back three generations. The service station has recently been upgraded and provides an even better offer to the motoring public and local community. Christine’s grandfather Stan Rains took over the

2011 SAE-A award winners new heat exchanger, and will pay back the investment in less than one month if installed in the factory. Because this system greatly reduces engine warm up time, it reduces engine wear by more than 96 percent. Two patent applications have been filed for OVER7, it has been adopted by one car manufacturer for its next generation of engines, and it is being reviewed by other leading global vehicle manufacturers.

Innovations to reduce engine emissions and fuel consumption and to increase manufacturing efficiency were among the winners of the 2011 Automotive Engineering Excellence Awards recently presented in Melbourne by the Society of Automotive Engineers Australasia (SAE-A) SAE-A judging panel chair Bill Malkoutzis said the innovation and passion that was evident in the 2011 Awards entries was reassuring.

The winners of the 2011 SAE-A Awards included:

Gold Award: Frank Will, Senior Lecturer, Deakin University, for the OVER7 – Waste Heat Recovery System. The OVER7 technology reduces the frictional losses of engines by redirecting exhaust heat and by increasing heat transfer into the engine oil. This modification of the lubrication system includes simple piping, a valve and a

Silver Award: SMR Automotive Australia and the University of South Australia, for a lightweight integrated plastic rear vision mirror. This market ready lightweight rear vision mirror is expansion-compression moulded polycarbonate with a multi-layer nano-engineered thin film coating system creating the reflective surface. Elimination of the glass reduces mirror reflector weight by 50 percent and results in a reduction in greenhouse gases emissions of up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2 over five years, and reduces overall mass of the mirror assembly by 15 percent. Developed through a partnership between SMR Automotive, the University of South Australia and the AutoCRC, this technology reduces the number of components in the mirror assembly and simplifies the mirror manufacturing process, while enabling greater freedom of mirror design. It improves safety in a crash situation, because the polycarbonate does not shatter like glass. Bronze Award: Gregory Linke, manager, Virtual Manufacturing Engineering, GM Holden, for his bottleneck indicator tool software system for manufacturing optimisation. This innovative manufacturing tool builds on the known “Theory of Constraints” concept to identify bottlenecks in complex manufacturing processes. The algorithm and processing methodology is based on real time computer analysis of the work flow through the system’s work station buffer areas (where one process is completed and another begins). The tool requires only easily validated buffer contents data, which makes data acquisition and calibration readily achievable. The benefits of are far reaching, including accuracy, ease of calibration, low deployment cost and negligible ongoing maintenance. a rigid, frameless semi-monocoque unit. Advanced composites are used, including carbon fibre to add rigidity is some sections, and synthetic fibre to increase impact resistance in others. Exterior design enhances aerodynamic stability and reduces drag and the tapered plan and profile shape directs the slipstream to enhance yaw stability and reduce drag inducing turbulence at the rear. The high gloss interior gel coat finish inside as well as outside, and marine grade carpets and electrical equipment, allow hose-out cleaning of the interior when soft furnishing are removed. Vaughan Bolwell was lead designer on the Australian Institute of Sport - RMIT SupaRoo track bicycle, which won gold at the 1994 Commonwealth Games. Young Engineer Award: Stephanie Radion, Senior Engineer, Seating, GM Holden. Stephanie Radion was lead seating engineer on the GM Holden Chevrolet Police Vehicle Export programme and demonstrated excellent performance in both the engineering and program management aspect of the role, well above that expected of an engineer with only four years experience. Her extensive research on the performance of existing seats and the customer needs fuelled the design, including the application of heavy duty seat fabric used in the defence industry. The project was completed in half the usual time for a seat project, including late programme requests. Young Engineer Award Runner up: Christopher Ebejer, Team Leader Reliability Testing, Automotive and Body Electronics Division, Robert Bosch Australia. Christopher Ebejer was responsible for the design, development and validation of a unique testing methodology and associated equipment for the electrostatic discharge testing of electrical automotive based components. He applied a sixaxis robotic arm fitted with a purpose built electrostatic discharge head system allowing complete automation of the discharge testing. This improved the test procedure by shortening the test cycle, increasing the accuracy and repeatability of the results, and was achieved within his designated delivery time. SAE-A Automotive Engineering Excellence Awards entries are invited from all organisations and individuals, which directly or indirectly provide products, processes or services to the vehicle and related industries. reader reply 110808

One of the highlights of the 2011 Australian Automotive Aftermarket Expo held in Melbourne was the LuK clutch change challenge. The challenge was to install a LuK self adjusting clutch (SAC) onto a dual mass flywheel mounted on a rack at the Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket stand. Each challenge session created a great deal of interest throughout the event, with many trade visitors enquiring about the LuK SAC special tool as they had seen how dramatically this device simplifies the replacement of LuK self adjusting clutches. The LuK SAC special tool can also be used for the installation of standard clutches. The winner was Daniel Reinhardt from the Australian VW Performance Centre in Melbourne. Second place went to Glenn Ford, from the Doc Ford Auto Clinic in NSW and third to Ben McLeod, from 4B Fabrications and Performance Tuning in Victoria. “I wasn’t going to have a go but my friends were pushing me to give it a shot and I saw it as a bit of fun,” says Daniel. “Once I got into it, it was clear that the LuK SAC Tool cuts time dramatically in replacing clutches and I just flew through it.“ The Australian VW Performance Centre has been in business for more than 25 years and enjoys a constant flow of repair and maintenance work. “Working with VWs for so long, I am well aware of LuK clutches, INA tensioners and FAG wheel bearings. We have two hoists here that are constantly on the go, so anything that saves labour time but does not compromise quality, is a good thing,” says Daniel. The introduction of the LuK SAC Special Tool for clutch replacement is one of several aftermarket innovations developed to assist repairers. LuK aftermarket clutch systems and service solutions such as LuK RepSet and LuK Repset Pro are workshop friendly repair solutions that have progressed in line with advances in technology, such as the introduction of concentric slave cylinders to clutch systems. A new LuKCatalogue was also released at the expo which can be ordered by contacting Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket via LuK-AS. au@Schaeffler.com

After performing any suspension component replacement or repair including a wheel alignment it may be required to check the steering angle sensor for proper positioning. The steering angle sensor should be checked and reset after a wheel alignment, accident repair, and suspension work or when any of the following components have been removed or replaced: • ABS/EDL/ASR/ESP control units • Steering Angle Sensors • Steering column • Under body steering components. Accurate calibration of the steering wheel angle sensor is vital if the vehicle’s ESP system is to perform correctly in an emergency situation. Here is an example of how to check and adjust steering angle sensors. First connect a diagnostic tool like the Bosch KTS 540, to the diagnostic port of the vehicle to start the process of realigning the steering angle sensor. Bosch’s KTS 540 is Bluetooth enabled and can talk wirelessly to a laptop over a reasonable distance providing convenient diagnosis and calibration of the vehicle being tested. One of the features of the KTS 540 is its ability to evaluate steering angle sensor alignment; the KTS 540 can also reset the steering angle sensor if required. The example here is the procedure that is preformed when working with a Holden VE Commodore. The KTS 540 provides a step-by-step procedure to ensure the sensor is evaluated and calibrated correctly. The technician follows the simple prompts that appear on each screen to complete the evaluation and calibration procedure. After vehicle selection the technician will be required to choose the adjustments and settings function on the KTS 540. Following this it will be necessary to choose the

Subscribers, check your mail boxes! August is now upon us and that means it is update time for Autodata subscribers. As with all Autodata updates subscribers will be introduced to a wealth of new vehicles and information. Autodata Australia managing director, Brett Engeman believes this substantial update will be welcomed by technicians because of its detailed body module, transmission, instruments and central locking circuitry which are known problem areas for aftermarket repairers. Circuits contain zoom features with ‘hotspot’ labelling, which gives a hovering mouse pointer the power to quickly identify components and wire colours. Autodata says its mandatory standardising of component names and colour labelled circuitry have set a new industry benchmark. It allows technicians to navigate between our wiring, component testing and pin data with its integration and hot-linking features. In fact, Autodata, who boast the largest database of wiring diagrams in Australasia are so serious about adding more wiring, tech room staffer Shayne Brooks currently underwent two weeks of specialist training in wiring diagram compilation. He is now a member of an elite team of seven wiring diagram drawers. Autodata says it aims to produce 800 new diagrams every year. “That’s a big ask considering it can take between eight and 20 hours to do each drawing.” says managing director Brett Engeman. Mr Engeman says the Airbag information is another major highlight of the V39 update with an additional 222 models covered in this information. “Air bag information is one of the most popular requests that our technical department receives. Autodata prides ourselves on subscriber feedback and this has influenced us to focus strongly in

this area,” He says. “Updates to Autodata’s extensive range of information are generated by our in-house team of more than 70 researchers in Australia, the

This year’s annual APAA Luncheon which was recently held at the Ellerslie Convention Centre, was an overwhelming success. Members of the APAA say it was one of the best attendances from all areas within the automotive industry which the association had seen in many years. Guest speaker Keith Quinn opened his speech with the confession that he knew very little about cars, which was an amusing way to warm up the assembled guests. However, his encyclopaedic knowledge of sport, and most especially rugby, was entertaining. Growing up in a sports-mad family sowed the seed for a lifetime career. Quinn recounted tales of those many sports people he had met in a lifetime career of TV and radio journalism, which kept the audience thoroughly amused and riveted to their seats for more than 45 minutes. Luncheon guests Jane Lawson and Mike Bardsley were the delighted winners of the prize draw and each received a copy of Keith Quinn’s latest book, The A-Z of Meads. The AAPA is now planning for another successful luncheon function in 2012 and will advise a date as soon as it is confirmed by the organising committee.

Narva launches most powerful halogen globe Automotive lighting specialist Narva has released the first Plus 100 halogen globe in New Zealand taking high performance night driving to an even higher level. Developed in Europe, the new globes are heralded as an engineering breakthrough. Advanced manufacturing techniques have maximised the filler gas to put 100 percent more light on the road than a conventional halogen globe, adding a further 35 metres of brilliant white light without any increase in power consumption or heat build up. Suitable for use in headlamps with polycarbonate lenses, the new Plus 100 globes are ‘E’ marked - street legal and available in H1, H3, H4, H7, HB3, HB4, and HB11 versions. The increase in light on the road is evident on low beam with a broad even spread of white light with a hint of blue toning but on high beam the light output is nothing short of dramatic, increasing visibility and road safety with its pure power. Objects can be seen more clearly at a distance of 75 metres and the greater illumination provides better reflections from road markings and signs. No additional wiring or switches are required with the use of the globes which increase night time visibility and reduce eye strain. “These globes make driving at night much safer because you can see further and have more time to react if you spot danger on the road ahead,” says Bruce Walker, of Narva New Zealand. “The best thing is that they can be used as a replacement for headlight or spotlight globes in most vehicles on New Zealand roads, meaning that drivers can instantly upgrade their

Tooling up your workshop In this eight page feature Motor Equipment News takes a look at the importance of equipping the workshop with the best possible solutions for your particular business application. We also present an update from our suppliers on their latest product offer and look at air conditioning equipment as well. Getting the best return from your investment By Ed Higgins Director Sulco Tools and Equipment

In an industry where time is money, placing importance on having the right tools and equipment to get the job done is a top priority.

16

www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz

Often cash flow is tight, but this should not preclude every workshop having an equipment replacement program in place. Nothing man made lasts forever. So planning to replace aging equipment in advance of its failing should be a workshop owner’s priority. Every prudent workshop manager must ensure that they have a plan in place with management, for bringing in new equipment to help build the business and to ensure that the workshop continues to deliver, first class services, in line with the customers expectations. Nothing is closer to the truth than the saying “good equipment will make you money it will not cost you money.” With a wide range of equipment now being manufactured in Asia, items such as lifts and tyre machines have never been more affordable. As an importer we at Sulco Tools have a responsibility to ensure that all equipment on offer is made to a standard that will meet the expectations of the customer. Customers should also be aware that they have responsibilities, as employers to ensure that all equipment in the operation is fully understood by their technicians and safe to use. So often workshops make their buying decisions based on price alone. However the initial purchase cost may not be the last cost. So consideration should be given to other factors, such as features and benefits, longevity, reliability and backup service. Down time is costly. Internet traders have added a new dimension to the mix, offering bed rock prices, but very little else in our opinion. Let the buyer beware under these circumstances. New equipment items added to the workshop

line up such as transmissions flushers, smoke machine, brake lathes, diagnostic gear or special service tools will all add to the list of services on offer to customers. Why send vehicles to outwork when so many extra tasks can be done in house? They are after all your customers. Why place your customer’s vehicles with third party workshops for tyres, mufflers, and electrical work etc? Why send your business into the hands of potential competitors? For example it’s so affordable and easy to get into the tyre sales business. Here at Sulco we can show workshop owners how they can open up so many new opportunities such as this. All equipment needs maintenance and for this reason we have on our staff a team of five technicians trained on installation or remedial work to get your gear set up, or back up and running, in the shortest possible time frame. We also work closely with a nationwide team of trained installation and maintenance contractors. When buying equipment, we suggest that workshops should choose to deal with a company that has top line products plus all the special small service tool items, including those that are essential for jobs such as removing a problematic cylinder head. The quality of the product is remembered long after the price is forgotten. Today it is pleasing to see a market trend where many customers are returning to the purchase of top quality gear albeit at a higher price because they know the investment in these new products will be returned back in revenue over considerable time. reader reply 110818

We taught MacGyver everything he knows...

Workshop Equipment FEATURE

Keeping it in the family

About fixing

Vince, Ben and Sam

The team at the Christchurch-based familyowned company Autotest Servicing Ltd jokingly says that it taught MacGyver everything he knew about fixing things. The day-to-day operation is run by brothers Ben and Sam Kearns with their father Vince who founded the business, which focuses mainly upon the service, maintenance, repair and calibration of garage equipment. Autotest Servicing Ltd is the service agent for most brands of equipment including: Hunter, Cemb, Corghi, Biesbarth, BM brake testers, Circuitlink, Allen, Hofmann, John Bean, Procut, and Bosch. The company specialises in most garage equipment brands and they also do WOF equipment calibration as well as insurance claims for damaged equipment. Servicing and calibrating sound meters, beam setters, brake rollers, Circuit Link Brake Checks, and portable brake equipment are all in a days work for the Autotest Servicing team. “If you should ring Autotest Servicing, Ben will most likely answer the phone. He enjoys being the front man and organises the daily work load. Everyone likes his relaxed chatty phone manner,” says Vince. “Dad started the business more than 30 years ago,” says Ben. “He used to service the old Vane and Blackhawk tune scopes. He was once introduced to a client as ‘Vince, king of the scopes’. Now those giant scopes have all but gone and been replaced with small hand held devices.” “Dad also specialises in wheel balancers and aligners as well, and has been servicing Hunter wheel aligners for around 25 years. We stock all Hunter parts, especially for the older equipment. “Dad has passed his knowledge onto Sam and me. He is great at explaining how things work and how to diagnose faulty components correctly and avoid using that dreaded shotgun approach where you just guess and replace parts at random.” “Sam brings his computer expertise to the business,” says Vince. “He often has to rebuild wheel alignment computers and has stockpiled a valuable inventory of components. He can turn around an alignment computer the same day whether it is a software issue or hardware issue.”

“In many cases it is far quicker to send a broken computer to us rather than to a local computer shop,” says Sam. “Because the first thing they do is try to replace the computer just to find they have now dug themselves in a huge hole.” Sam says the company has some loan machines so the customer is not left unable to work. “We do recommend an annual service/calibration on wheel alignment equipment to help prevent breakdowns and to ensure the equipment is measuring accurately, “ says Sam. “It also pays to have the aligner checked in the event of a mishap. We have seen many faces turn pale when a client realises that it was more than a few months ago when a sensor was dropped and we have only just discovered it was out by a huge amount.” With the wide range of Bosch automotive test equipment out in the market Autotest service the KTS, FSA, BEA and ETT series of diagnostic testers. “We stock all the consumables for these machines such as the filters and oxygen sensors as well as some electronic components and we have access to other parts in Australia if there is a need for them,” says Ben. “As with most equipment it’s best to maintain your Bosch equipment annually and always follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and then the equipment will give long and faithful service. “We recommend that gas analysers in particular are serviced annually as workshops who don’t maintain these will find it an expensive exercise if they eventually breakdown. Irregular maintenance can unfortunately lead to component failures.” Ben, Sam and Vince are all registered electricians or electrical service technicians so clients can be confident that their service and test equipment will be serviced and repaired to the highest standard. Autotest support the hoist service agents in Christchurch with the service and repair of the hoist electrical and electronic controls. Although repairs and servicing is the company’s main focus from time to time it does also offer the sale of refurbished equipment such as analysers and wheel aligners if and when the opportunity arises. reader reply 110819

A new approach to customer relations It is well known that some faults only occur under specific conditions. For example, problems like power loss occur only in a certain rev range or warning lights and sensors flagging faults are displayed only under particular conditions. Some of these problems are almost impossible to solve in the garage, causing frustration for both mechanics and customers. Now, an innovative device from Texa makes it easy for garages and mechanics to delight their customers by saving time and money. The OBD Log plugs directly into the vehicle‘s own diagnostic socket and records all errors on an internal chip so that these can be viewed quickly and easily on a PC. The mechanic simply installs the OBD Log in the car and it will to record all relevant data while the customer drives the vehicle around normally. The OBD Log’s small size and the fact that it is totally automatic mean that it can be installed on any type of vehicle that has Euro II or for petrol engines back to Euro II specification and diesel engines which are Euro VI or better. Because the OBD Log features a cyclical memory that writes the latest data over the oldest if no error is detected, it can be left to record engine parameters for days or even a week at a time. At the end of the monitoring period, all a mechanic needs to do simply download the recorded data to a PC,

using the OBD Log Software Suite with its intuitive graphic interface. This intelligent software suite lets mechanics view recorded parameters for actual trips, giving precise information on the actual time that the fault occurred. Depending on whether an error

Comparing apples with oranges By Herbert Leijens AECS On paper it often seems very attractive to buy a well-specified piece of equipment for a very low price directly from the Internet. Although AECS distributes Ecotechnics (est 1995) air conditioning equipment which is manufactured in Italy, it seemed very attractive to start distributing cheaper air conditioning equipment to capture another segment of the equipment market. During the search for such equipment AECS selected a prime manufacturer of air conditioning equipment in China. Being a prime manufacturer means that a company produces the equipment in its own factory. Many equipment manufacturers buy the equipment from prime manufacturers and simply put their stickers, logos and mark up on these machines. AECS purchased and imported a top of the line machine from this company which had an impressive specification list and cost around 66 percent of a comparable Ecotechnics machine. In all the following pictures AECS have ensured the logos and part numbers of this Chinese machine are not visible to protect the company, as this machine is sold in NZ. AECS prepared a comparison report to ensure that the machine met the requirements of NZ workshops and would not create come backs. AECS apply this process to all new products before it is distributed to its client base. First impressions are very important and none more so than the layout of the machines ability to interface with the user. User interface Ecotechnics

The layout of the unit is clear. It has a 4-line LCD display. The menu structure is intuitive.

The software has built in waiting time during recovery and automatic vacuum leak check. The last 50 grams of refrigerant charging is done in small steps to achieve high charge accuracy. The machine will automatically advise when a filter

The menu structure is very simple due to its limited abilities: • The machine does not have any waiting time. During recovery, it switches off at ambient pressure. Some refrigerant will only evaporate after a waiting period. It does not automatically continue into vacuum or charging mode. • No service warning and no on-board counter. • No printer, the recovered and used volumes appear very briefly on screen and need to be written down by the operator • No taps between the machine and the hoses • The pressure gauges are small • No electronic gauges • No bottle pressure sensor • No charge quantity database.

Service step one: Recovery The first step when servicing an air conditioning system on a vehicle is to recover the refrigerant, filter it, dry it, separate the oil, weigh and store the refrigerant and measure the quantity of oil. On the Italian Ecotechnics machine the on board compressor removes the refrigerant from the car. The refrigerant flows through a filtration unit, an oil separator, a dryer, a distillation tower, a de-acidising filter, before the gas gets compressed. The high pressure gas is condensed before it is pumped into the storage bottle, which is placed on a weight sensor for quantity measuring, which is recorded by the controller. The oil is removed from the refrigerant and put into a storage bottle, which is suspended from a very sensitive weight sensor. The weight sensor reports to the Ecotechnics controller the quantity of oil recovered. The Chinese machine also has a compressor, which removes refrigerant from the car. The refrigerant flows through an oil separator and through just one very small filter. The compressor increases the pressure of the gaseous refrigerant and pushes it directly into the on board storage bottle. No condenser is fitted, which makes the temperature and pressure in the on board bottle very high. Any compressor which needs to work in against high pressure becomes less effective. The fan fitted in the machine is supposed to cool the bottle (to reduce pressure) and to cool the compressor. The separated oil is pushed into a waste oil bottle which has no weighing mechanism. The only way to measure the oil is to look at the lines on the bottle. During recovery, the removal of refrigerant from the AC system cools the AC system down. The cold system reduces the speed at which the liquid refrigerant transforms into gas. The pressure can be pulled down by the compressor to -0.2 Bar (well under ambient) on the Italian machine and down to ambient pressure on the Chinese machine. The Italian machine will wait for a period at the end of recovery and monitors the pressure in the system. A certain pressure rise indicates that liquid refrigerant is still evaporating in the vehicles AC system. The compressor will switch on again to recover the last remaining bit of R134a, before it automatically enters into the next stage (vacuum). If during the vacuuming stage, the pressure suddenly rises to just over ambient the vacuum pump will switch off and the machine will indicate that refrigerant is still present in the system which needs to be recovered. The Chinese machines compressor will switch off when just ambient pressure has been achieved and that is all. Even a substantial pressure rise does not restart the compressor. The display indicates that the vacuum pump needs to be activated to continue. This requires user intervention. If any refrigerant is present in the AC system during the vacuum cycle, it will be expelled to atmosphere by the vacuum pump. If liquid refrigerant is still present, it will destroy the vacuum pump as there is no safety cut out. The machine can also be switched into vacuum mode when the AC system is still fully charged. AECS stripped the newly purchased Chinese machine and a new Ecotechnics machine to inspect how each machine achieves the recovery process. www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz

The refrigerant gets pulled through the filtration/ distillation/ separation unit, compressed and condensed, before it gets pumped into the storage bottle. The waste oil is pumped into the waste oil bottle for inspection and measuring.

The refrigerant is pulled through an oil separator and a filter before it is compressed and pushed directly into the storage bottle. The separated oil flows into the waste oil bottle.

Service step two: Vacuum After the refrigerant has been recovered and stored, the AC system need to be vacuumed with a vacuum pump. The vacuum process removes any air, moisture, and remaining refrigerant from the AC system. No vacuum pump is able to remove moisture from the vehicle AC systems desiccant in

the receiver dryer. It is also not able to remove any liquid (oil) or particulates (filings, dirt) from the AC system. The vacuum pump can only remove vapour. The vacuuming time needs to be long enough to allow for example water to turn into vapour so it can be removed. For this reason the vacuum time for an average car is around

The separated oil gets stored in a waste oil bottle. The weight increase on the sensor is a measure of quantity.

30 minutes. On both machines the vacuum time can be adjusted to cater for individual conditions. The vacuum pump will be on continuously during the process, so it needs to be robust. It needs to be a high precision pump to speed up the transformation process of turning water into vapour. The Italian machine will automatically isolate the vehicle from the running vacuum pump after ten minutes. Every 60 seconds the control unit monitors the pressure. A pressure increase indicates a likely leak in the system and the Ecotechnics machine will sound an alarm and stop the vacuum process. If there is no leak found, the software progresses to the next stages, deep vacuum, oil (+UV) fill and refrigerant charging. During the vacuum process a heater increases the pressure in the on board storage bottle to speed up the charging of refrigerant charging. The Chinese machine will turn the very small and fragile looking vacuum pump on for a pre-set duration. The timer does not interrupt when a vacuum leak is present in the AC system.

The vacuum pump is large and robust in the Italian machine, and is controlled by smart electronics.

The small vacuum pump is switched on and off without any control other than a timer.

Service step three: Charging When the recovery and vacuum process is complete the vehicles AC system needs to be topped up with new oil and charged with refrigerant. The oil needs to be drawn into the AC system by the vacuum created in step two. The oil will enter the hoses connected to the car and will be flushed into the AC system by the refrigerant filling procedure. The oil quantity needs to be precisely measured as the AC system does not have an oil level gauge. The oil which comes out during recovery (waste oil), needs to be measured and the new oil that needs to replace the extracted oil needs to be measured accurately too. The Italian machine will automatically shut a solenoid valve when the correct quantity of oil has been entered the vehicles AC system. On the Chinese machine a button on the front of the machine needs to be pushed while looking at the deviations on the new oil bottle (off the side of the machine). When the correct amount of oil has been drawn out of the bottle the operator needs to let go of the button.

been taken out of the machines bottle. When the correct weight has been reached, the control unit will instruct the user, on the display, how to get the remaining refrigerant from the machines hoses into the AC system. The result is a very precise charge into the vehicle, something which needs to be considered when working on 200 gram systems used in vehicles such as late model BMWs were only a five gram deviation is allowed. The Chinese machine will show a zero weight during charging and opens the solenoids till the manually entered weight (weight reduction of the bottle) has been reached. The solenoids will shut and procedure is regarded as completed. This method is very imprecise. AECS had about 100 gram difference in weight during different recover/ recharge cycles of 1000 gram refrigerant in a service tank. The Chinese machine does not have a heater blanket to increase the bottle pressure during charging making the process very slow.

Purging With AC servicing it is very likely that air or other high pressure condensable gasses enter the storage tank. This air needs to be removed else the pressure in the tank will keep rising, stopping the compressor from pushing refrigerant into the tank, damaging the compressor. The Italian machine compares the bottle pressure with the bottle temperature and decides based on that logic if air is present in the storage tank. The control unit in the machine will sound a warning and will open automatically a solenoid valve to vent the air. This venting is called purging. The Chinese machine does not have any provision to purge the tank. There is no connection on the bottle for a purge valve. AECS concludes that any air in the bottle will eventually be charged back into a car, but it has not tested this. Italian unit

Italian unit

The storage tank has a purge connection. The purge line is connected to the valve body for automatic purging. Chinese unit The new oil is sucked into the service hoses, from the new oil bottle. The oil quantity is measured by looking at the deviations on the bottle.

Refrigerant charging The pressure difference between the vacuum in the vehicles AC system and the refrigerant pressure in the machine's storage bottle makes refrigerant flow into the car's AC system. The quantity charged in the car, needs to be precisely measured as an under and overcharged AC system runs inefficiently, with reduced cooling and increased fuel consumption. The quantity measuring is done by the machine, with a weight sensor under its storage bottle. The Italian machines control unit automatically measures the weight of the bottle before charging begins. It also turns automatically the heater on to increase the bottle pressure. The AC charge quantity is selected from an on board database by selecting the vehicle type and model, at the start of the service process. The solenoids will shut approximately 50 grams before the correct charge quantity has flowed from the storage tank. The solenoids will open in short bursts to precisely add more refrigerant till the correct quantity of refrigerant has

The storage tank is temperature/pressure checked for the presence of e.g. air. The tank has a heater blanket for increased charging pressure. Chinese unit

User manual In most cases is a small user manual is a good thing or else it will not be read. The Italian machine has an easily understood but lengthy user manual. The manual explains step by step every option the machine has but it does not explain what certain function are used for. The users manual is not an “how to service AC systems training manual. The Chinese machine has a very brief manual. It does also not explain how the system works, just which button to push and what you should read on the display. Conclusion AECS put both machines through a series of side by side tests and pulled both machines apart with an objective mind. Something most garages or air conditioning specialists cannot afford to do. Both machines require a certain level of expertise to be able to operate effectively. In the opinion of AECS the Chinese machine requires a far greater understanding of air-conditioning to prevent errors such as damaging the vacuum pump, charging air into the car, discharging refrigerant into the atmosphere. The prevention of over or under charging the vehicle is not possible with this unit. The Italian machine has a control unit (software operated), and in the opinion of AECS has far more safety and logic built in. Also the difference in overall engineering quality and precision adds to the equation. AECS has decided not to market this particular lower cost Chinese brand, even though it has an attractive price. Any garage or air conditioning service shop who wishes to invest in a recover/ recycle machine needs to consider all aspects of that purchase, including training and back up.

No purge connection on the bottle. reader reply 110823

The storage tank has no temperature sensor or heater mechanism. The weight sensor has no transport safety device.

Both machines need to be able to be transported across rough areas, or need to be able to be used in mobile applications. For this purpose the Italian machine is equipped with a transport lock bolt. The Chinese machine does not have this transport provision.

Talking torque wrenches Keeping tools clean and well looked after will go a long way. Tools are an investment, so to extend the life of a torque wrench and keep it accurate, most manufacturers, and HTC calibration engineers, recommend that the wrench be set to its lowest scale after the tool has been used. reader reply 110825

Mechanics often have their own torque wrench and some mechanics have had the same wrench since starting their apprenticeship. They know how to use a torque wrench correctly, yet still some people form bad habits which can affect the operation and lifespan of the tool. These torque wrench tips will keep a wrench in check and operating the way it should. Exercise

THESE ARE THE BEST PRODUCTS YOU'LL FIND FOR AUTOMOTIVE MAINTENANCE. The quality is great and the price is right.

Before using it on any bolt, a very good habit is to “exercise” the wrench. This doesn’t mean take it to the gym. Set it to the desired torque (the higher the setting the better) and put the wrench either in a vice or on a pre tightened bolt. Make the wrench click/break a few times. This exercises the spring inside and gets the lubricant working inside. Friction equals torque. Back off

Mechanics often miss this step. Simply backing the wrench off to the lowest torque setting after use can extend the calibration of the wrench. Because most torque wrenches work using an internal spring, having this spring under constant tension can cause the spring to lose its memory. A common outcome of keeping the wrench under tension is that it will have unstable “actual” readings across the spectrum.

Lubrication

A can of CRC or WD40 is invaluable, particularly for the users of the “break-in-half” wrenches. Regular use of lubrication on all pivot points will ensure that the wrench operates the way it should. This style of wrench has working parts exposed and open to the elements. Lubrication can also prevent rust and corrosion. Ratchets and adjusting nuts also benefit from a squirt of CRC.

Don’t weld it, bend it!

The CSM 100TRBE-RBE bending machine

Autobend have recently installed New Zealand’s biggest Mandrel tube bender the CSM 100TBRE-RBE at its East Tamaki manufacturing premises next to its established distribution warehouse.

The company says the CSM bender is world class technology which offers high precision bending and rolling of tubes with an internal mandrel and a carriage boost - no humps, bumps, wrinkles or elongation of bend. Materials they can bend include

EWS mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium. Autobend has also purchased a large inventory of tooling to cover round, square and oval tubes for both jobbing work and the production of stock bends. The twin stack tooling allows two different CLR bends or bending plus rolling into one tube – it is the only mandrel bender/roller machine in NZ with this capability Carriage boost for extremely tight 1xD bending up to 90 deg such as 50.8mm tube bent on a 50.8 centre line radius (CLR). Autobend staff can programme variable radii when rolling tubes or produce straight and concentric coils with CNC precision as well as repeat bending and rolling to the original specifications. The Five axis CNC controlled bender has the latest software for fast efficient programming and data can be entered using an XYZ table or co-ordinates from clients CAD drawings or a similar file. All tubes have ‘spring back’ when bent. So Autobend have installed a tube measuring table which can scan a pipe, either a sample, or the first tube off the machines and then make correct adjustments for spring back and elongation. The degree of bend, distance between straights, tube stretch, and spring back can all vary from the tooling set up and material so Autobend carry a full range of tubing in stock. This also allows the company to guarantee that the finished pipe will fit correctly and it

offers a printout of the dimensions for the clients QA department if required. Autobend says this is a cost effective solution for one-off jobs, prototypes or runs of 1,000 units with CNC precision and accuracy. The 4m ‘over mandrel’ bed allows multiple bends/ rolls to reduce welding which improves profitability for clients. The company imported tooling to bend and roll: 25.4, 31.8, 38.1, 44.5, 50.8, 63.5, 76.2, 88.9 & 101.6 OD tubes in Auckland plus has an even larger range in Christchurch for both left and right hand CNC benders. It says that direct clamping of its new CSM machine provides the ability to bend a variety of aluminium profiles such as window frames on dedicated tooling. Autobend have saved customers thousands of dollars in reduced scrap thanks to less welding, precision fitment, specialist knowledge as well as bending and rolling of the same tube. Truck racing in Germany

Adam Lako, Mark Oestreich, Markus Bosiger

Thanks to Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket, Motor Equipment News was invited to the Nurburgring racing circuit in Germany to watch the fifth round of the 2011 FIA European Truck Racing Championship (ETRC). Through its LuK clutch and transmission brand, Schaeffler is one of the sponsors of the Mario Kress MKR Technology truck racing team. Hence Motor Equipment News and five other international journalists from other motor trade publications were able to spend time watching the MKR Technology team in action and receive a technical briefing from Mr Kress himself. At the start line for the MKR Technology team at the Nurburgring round of the ETRC were the European champions Markus Bösiger (Switzerland) and Markus Oestreich (Germany) who were joined by younger driver Adam Lacko (Czech Republic). Team owner Mario Kress is one of the most

successful team owners in truck racing with more than 23 years under his belt. The MKR Technology team is based in the Czech Republic with a permanent staff of 26 people. Schaeffler’s clutch and transmission brand LuK provides technical support to the team and also supply it with a specially-designed racing clutch (using technology from its tractor division) and an upgraded power steering pump for the Renault Premium-based racing trucks. Mario says that the collaboration between himself and LuK on developing a racing clutch started with another team more than eight years ago. At the beginning there were problems with friction and vibration but the technology kept improving – the clutch can now withstand the demands of one and half seasons of truck racing. Incidentally the racing trucks weigh 5.5 tonnes www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz

with a distribution of 3.3 tonnes over the front axles and 2.2 over the rear axles both of which are supplied by Meritor. Inside the cab there are three GPS data loggers, one for the FIA, one for the team and one for Renault. The GPS units monitor the transmission and suspension, air temperature and water temperature of the engine amongst other critical data. “We can fine tune the truck to match the driving style of it’s driver,” says Mario Kress. “And given that we have three drivers, all have completely different styles.” For the 2011 season a new engine brake and substantial engine changes have contributed to further optimisation of the 1140 horsepower 12.8-litre capacity DXi 13 racing engine from Renault Trucks, hence the requirement for the racing clutch to be

specially engineered for the task ahead. While normal clutch pressure plates for trucks are designed to take 2,500 to 3,000 Nm of torque, a pressure plate for truck racing must be able to transfer 5,200 to 5,500 Nm of torque. The racing clutch used in the MKR racing trucks has a pressure plate that takes even higher torque than this because it is designed to cope with 6,000 Nm of torque. The clutch discs of the MKR trucks have sintered clutch linings able to withstand high friction and to resist the high temperatures that accompany it. The LuK power steering pump provides precise and easy steering during racing, even when making quick directional changes. Developed especially for these racing trucks, the power steering pump delivers a 15 to 20 percent higher flow-rate performance compared to standard power steering

pumps used in production vehicles. The FIA change the regulations for the 2011 Truck Racing season of which the most important are the new tyre regulations. At each race, a set of six Goodyear tyres will be chosen at random for the current top ten drivers prior to the first timed training session. Each driver must then use these particular tyres for timed training and during both races that day. This process repeats itself on the second day of racing – a set of tyres will be chosen at random. New regulations will enforce sanctions against any driver who is not able to finish with these tyres. The season began at Easter at Donington Park (UK). After race weekends in Misano (Italy), Albacete (Spain), Nogaro (France), Smolensk (Russia), Most (Czech Republic), Zolder (Belgium) and Jarama (Spain), the season will end at Le Mans on October 8/9. Besides providing technical support at the FIA ETRC 2011, the Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket brands LuK and FAG (precision roller bearings) will be prominently displayed on the MKR racing trucks, the team’s race clothing, and in the hospitality areas at each race. reader reply 110826 Captions Drivers: Adam Lacko, Markus Oestreich Markus Bösiger

DIESEL INDUSTRY NEWS

By Damien O’Carroll With the launch of the new Canter Euro, Mitsubishi Fuso now has one of the most technologically advanced light trucks available in the New Zealand market. While it may not look particularly different from the old model (all external cab accessories for the old Canter will still fit the new model) the Canter is in fact a complete clean-sheet design which Mitsubishi says utilised the full resources of the Daimler truck group during its five-year gestation. With 3.2 million km of testing during its development the new Canter meets and exceeds Euro 5 emission regulations and is the first commercial vehicle in the world to feature a dual clutch automated manual transmission. The all-new four-cylinder 3-litre turbo diesel engine not only exceeds Euro 5 regulations (actually being designed to meet Euro 6 regs with minimal alterations) it also meets the European Union EEV emission standards, which focus on particulate output rather than actual CO2 emissions, making the Canter one of the cleanest light trucks on the market. Available in two power levels 110kW/360Nm and 129kW/390Nm - the new engine increases service intervals from 10,000km on the previous model to an impressive 30,000km. Both versions come equipped with a diesel particulate filter, while the higher-powered engine also features Daimler’s BlueTec afterexhaust urea treatment, and both engines come with the choice of a five-speed manual transmission or the new six-speed Duonic automated dual clutch transmission. The Duonic transmission is only a $2,500 option on the Canter (as opposed to the $6,000 asked for the conventional automatic on the last Canter) the reductions in servicing costs - fluid change intervals for the Duonic trans are 60,000km - and vehicle downtime make the dual-clutch transmission almost a no-brainer. With maximum torque coming in at 1,350rpm on the 110kW version and 1,650rpm on the 129kW version, the Canter pulls away from low revs effortlessly, the Duonic transmission keeping the engine in the middle of the incredibly flat torque curve pretty much all the time. The transmission is acutely smooth in its operation and shifts pretty much when you would expect it to, with a manual shift a mere flick of the gear lever away if needed. As well as being effortless to drive the Canter is also comfortable, with the entirely new cabin being well thought out and practical and with a multitude of cubby holes and cup holders, while all the controls being very ergonomically sensible and easy to use. Available in 4.5, 5, 6, 7.5 and 8.2 ton GVM variants (with the 4.5 ton model being available in narrow or wide cab versions - all others are wide cab only) the new Canter range is the most extensive offering in New

Clean-sheet Canter

Zealand for quite some time, boasting 27 different models in total, including narrow and wide cab variants, single and

double cab variants and a variety of wheelbases ranging from 2,800mm up to 4,750mm. reader reply 110823

Plastics fabrication and repair welding by Tim Fastnedge (Techspan Group) Email :tim@techspanonline.com www.techspanonline.co.nz support. Applications advice, spare parts and technical service is usually offered by the quality equipment suppliers. A good supplier will carry a full range of equipment, accessories and even consumables - eg. plastic welding rods. These suppliers have generally been in the business for many years and so will have the knowledge and experience to best support new buyers. Warranty

High quality welding tools are usually covered with a warranty. In Australia and New Zealand, Techspan brand plastic welders are supplied with a limited 2 year warranty. Temperature Control

A critical part of the plastic welding process is ensuring the welding temperature of the tool matches the welding temperature of the particular material to be welded. As

Techspan’s Tech Tips will help guide you in achieving a good understanding of the Plastic Welding process. These tech tips will provide you with new tips and techniques on how to get plastic fabrication and repairs right the first time. In this issue we look at the plastic welding tools available and the various types of equipment available. Hand-held plastic welding tools provide a precisely controlled jet of Hot Air, which can be set to a specific temperature for welding all thermoplastics. These are by far the most commonly used tools for plastics fabrication and repair welding today. Extrusion welders are designed to weld large wall section materials (12mm +), and in general are used in large scale plastics fabrication. First time buyers will find a range of welding tools available to suit a wide range of welding applications. So what do they need to consider? Here is a list of things to take on board before purchasing your first plastic welder.

Equipment should be selected that complies with worldwide welding standards, as set by the German/ Swiss welding/joining society (DVS). This means the welding equipment is manufactured to meet ideal parameters as required to ensure strong, structual, molecular welding. In general equipment manufactured in Europe (Switzerland / Germany) will carry the CE mark. CE marking is a key indicator that a product complies with EU (European Union) legislation. CE marked products conform to very high standards of manufacture, safety, performance and quality. CE marked products are bought by professional users as they are the most suitable for industrial and commercial use. Beware of cheap Chinese equipment. In China the CE symbol has been alleged to stand for China Export or China Engineering - because some Chinese manufacturers apply a very similar marking to their products. As Chinese exporters have used the CE logo incorrectly, the matter was raised at the EU parliament in 2008, and the Commission decided they will look into trademarking the official CE logo - and are in discussion with Chinese authorities to ensure compliance with European standards. Make sure the supplier offers back up and

different plastics weld at different temperatures, a welding tool with precise electronic temperature control is essential. In general temperature control is built-in to the welding tools. Some models even offer LCD displays, where you can set welding tempertures accurately on the screen. These models are commonly referred to as ‘Digital’ models. Built-in Blower

The most common plastic welding tool is fully self contained, such as the Techspan model Rion, which means that the blower is built-in to the welder. These tools are by far the most portable and easy to use. Some models don’t have built in blowers - compressed air can be used to provide the required air source to such models, however use of compressed air can be very expensive and must be ‘clean and dry’. Pressure must also be controlled to suit the welding tool airflow specifications. Compressed air flow characteristics are also not as ideal as the fully self contained models with built-in blowers. Accessories and nozzles for plastic welding

The welding tool will require some specific accessory nozzles in order to affect correct welding techniques. To ensure clients have all the right nozzles for the welding application, Techspan recommends they buy their plastic welding tool in KIT form. reader reply 110831

NEWS MOTORSPORT

FULL OF INTELLIGENT MOLECULES THAT KNOW WHERE TO GO

A new motorsport class is born Bernard Carpinter reports on the new V8 SuperTourer category.

A new series for seven-litre touring cars, called V8 SuperTourers, starts in New Zealand in February 2012, with drivers including Greg Murphy and several NZ V8 champions. Some Australian-based V8 Supercar drivers are expected to take part in the longdistance races within the series. The cars will all have the same chassis and engine, to ensure close racing, but will have different body shapes. Most will be current-model VE Commodores or FG Falcons, but there could also be other models such as a Toyota Camry. They will have performance close to that of V8 Supercars, but will be much cheaper to buy and run. The V8 SuperTourers are breaking away from the main NZ championship series and will run their category themselves. Meanwhile the BNT NZ V8s remain officially this country’s top championship category for at least the next two seasons, but many of the star drivers are moving into the SuperTourers. The SuperTourers actually grew out of a project by some NZ V8 teams to develop new cars for the category. The cars currently racing are now old models – the Commodores are the VY type – but it was difficult to introduce current models because of the need to maintain parity of performance between the different models. The problem here is that the Falcons and Commodores are different mechanically, especially in the front suspension, so it takes a lot of tinkering and argument to come up with rules that give the different cars similar performance. One solution is a move to a common chassis, and this is what the group of team owners led by Mark Petch investigated. They recruited Paul Ceprnich of Pace Innovations Australia to design a chassis that could take the metal bodyshells of Falcons and Commodores. One

advantage of this approach is obvious – if everyone has the same suspension, gearbox and so on, they all have the same performance potential. Another is that you can keep the same chassis and put a new bodyshell on it when a new model comes on the market. And you can fit quality racing-type components, brakes for example, that will be both effective and durable. Then Petch, together with Wayne Anderson and Garry Pedersen, formed V8 SuperTourers Ltd and

rocked the establishment by deciding to go it alone. The big change from NZ V8 philosophy was the decision to shift to a seven-litre engine instead of sticking with the current five-litre Ford and Holden units. The sevenlitre engine is powerful, of course, with about 550hp, but it is relatively low-stressed and should mean little maintenance. It costs $20,000 new, whereas NZ V8 team owners say it costs at least $13,000 just to “refresh” a current engine, and much more to do a complete overhaul.

John MacIntyre

At first the announcement of the new category was greeted with some scepticism. It needed entrants to have more than $200,000 to join in, it was not an official NZ championship, and it was not clear what arrangements were in place for support classes, sponsorship and TV coverage. However more and more leading drivers and teams announced they were joining in and it is now evident that it will really happen, with the opening round at Hampton Downs on February 17-19. All 16 of the initial build run are spoken for. Greg Murphy’s involvement, driving a Holden for Mark Cromie, gives it instant credibility and current NZ V8 champion John McIntyre is buying two Fords, one for himself and one for a driver yet to be named. Former NZ V8 champions joining the series include Kayne Scott, Andy Booth and Paul Manuell. Current Formula Ford champion Andre

Heimgartner, just 16, is making a big move up to the fast new cars and indeed the V8 SuperTourers are now being promoted as the “series of champions”. Since the chassis is designed for racing, rather than being a modified road car, drivers should find the V8 SuperTourers more responsive and rewarding to race. Indeed when McIntyre – who has raced V8 Supercars with success – tested the prototype he reckoned it was better than a V8 Supercar. “That’s the best touring car I’ve ever driven, it’s just phenomenal,” McIntyre, who will again drive for Stone Brothers Racing in this year’s V8 Supercar endurance races, said. “It’s got a better balance than a V8 Supercar, because the engine is further back and it’s an alloy engine as well. And depending on the fuel loads, we can run 100kg lighter than a V8 Supercar. It’s more like a real race car, whereas a V8 Supercar takes time to get your head around.” Murphy was similarly enthusiastic after his test. “It’s got plenty of power; the chassis is great; it looks great and sounds great,” he said. “There are so many similarities to a V8 Supercar, but the V8SuperTourer is lighter. There’s a little work to do, but the race car is a nice, simple, solid package.” Murphy has not contested a series in his home country since winning the Grand Prix and Gold Star Championship for single seaters in 1993 but his V8 Supercar exploits – four victories at both Bathurst and Pukekohe – made him a national hero and fans will follow his progress closely. And as he says, the V8 SuperTourers will be a real help for Kiwis trying to break

into V8 Supercars as they can gain during the coldest part of the year. Technical sidebar experience in big powerful cars The V8 SuperTourers have before they try the move to Australia. a monocoque chassis, like the The series will include up to three Australian V8 Supercar “Car of the long-distance events where each Future” project. It can accommodate car will need two drivers. Organisers both the current VE Commodore are hoping that at least some of the and FG Falcon bodies, and also teams will bring in name drivers any other similarly sized four-dour from Australia. McIntyre would love production vehicle such a Toyota to share his car with new Kiwi hero Shane Van Gisbergen, who scored his Camry or BMW 5-series. Power comes from a strictly first V8 Supercar victory at Hamilton controlled all-alloy, fuel-injected this year and has added another since. Van Gisbergen drives for Stone seven-litre V8 engine with a dry sump. This motor is derived Brothers Racing so that connection from the Le Mans C6R Corvette might well come in handy. The full schedule for the inaugural programme and hand-built in America. It delivers 550hp at V8 SuperTourers series has not yet 6800rpm and is expected to run been released, but the dates will through 10,000 racing kilometres be chosen so that they do not clash before requiring maintenance. successful GT3 sports car. The drive-train consists of a tripleplate clutch, which delivers engine torque through a Quaife six-speed sequential transmission via a twopiece prop-shaft feeding a classic nine-inch Ford differential. The setup includes a Torsen-style limited slip, crown wheel carrier assembly in order to provide excellent traction in most conditions. The rear suspension adopts the proven, yet simple in design and maintenance, three-link live rear axle with floating rear hubs. The front suspension is a sophisticated double-wishbone layout that is also cleverly symmetrical from left to right, reducing the number of spares a team needs. Both the front and rear suspension oscillations are dampened by adjustable bump and rebound shock absorbers fitted with adjustable spring platforms. The rack and pinion power steering assembly is mounted ahead of the engine in order to better optimise the front suspension geometry and cope with the high loads generated under long-distance racing events. The V8SuperTourer uses 11x18 inch forged alloy wheels carrying 280 x 680 x 18 racing slicks or wet-weather radial tyres. The brake rotors are 355mm ventilated at the front and 328 mm in the rear, fitted with forged billet alloy brake callipers and F1-style brake-ducting. The car is comparatively light with an all up weight, including driver, of less than 1300kg. The fuel cell carries 120 litres. reader reply 110832
