Welcome to 2012 Belated happy New Year greetings to all Motor Equipment News subscribers and readers. I hope that you all had a pleasant break despite the weather not being as helpful as it could have been. I started a painting project at home that got slightly interrupted, but the rainy weather gave me an excuse to catch up on some light reading and catch a few movies, which was nice. For those of you who have young children, I really do recommend taking them to Puss in Boots, it’s a movie that speaks to both kids and adults. I felt that Sherlock Holmes was also worth the ticket price despite unfavourable reviews by some critics. Despite the title of the magazine, MEN isn’t just about equipment news. We also feature stories on parts and new technology and features articles on how to run your business more efficiently and more effectively. Planning staff training for the year is always a good idea at this time and you can read about the Bosch training offer for 2012 on page 16. On a more serious note, the New Zealand Police have set up a stolen vehicle database, details of which

can be found on page 18. Workshop owners always need to be wary of dodgy characters and this is one database that could prevent them from any future heartache of working on cars that may not be legit. This issue of Motor Equipment News has started the year with a particular focus on new equipment and tools. I hope you all take a moment to browse through the tool feature which starts on page 20. There are some interesting products coming through from our advertisers which will go down well in a busy workshop environment. Our motorsport section has also veered into a new direction with Bernard Carpinter reporting on the renaissance of motorcycle road and circuit racing in New Zealand. While there has been considerable interest in the off-road race scene, road and circuit races seems to have taken a back seat, but that could be about to change, with some new fresh faces making their debut. You can read more about these brave young men on page 36.

A new era begins for Century
A new year brings a fresh new start for Century Distributors (NZ) with Bruce Mason retiring to spend more time enjoying his favourite pastimes, which are hunting, fishing and traveling around New Zealand. John Jenkins and Bruce started Century Distributors (NZ) more than 15 years ago and have in that time they say they have seen many changes in the motor trade workshop equipment industry, a lot for the better and many that they say they are personally responsible for. “Although it will be sad to end a successful partnership, all will not be lost without Bruce and his knowledge of the industry, believe me, we will

have him in on a semi regular basis helping out,” says John. “Bruce’s retirement gave us a good opportunity to look back, reflect, look forward and refocus, he says. “When one looks back it is easy to see things that should have, or may have been done differently, so starting 2012 will see some positive changes put into place.” John says the initial changes will be: • Rebrand the company so it will be become known as Century Equipment Distributors (NZ). • Rebrand equipment such as hoists, tyre changers, balancers, brake rollers, spray booths, truck lifts as Century brand.
• Discontinue supply of products/brands that no longer meet market requirements or receive little factory support. •Discontinue supplying products that Century Equipment doesn’t have the expertise to offer ongoing support for. “We feel it is easier to market one brand instead of a number of brands, plus we feel there is less confusion for the end user by providing them a name that they can trust,” says John. “As far as our valued and loyal customer base is concerned, there are absolutely no changes that will have any affect on them in anyway,” says John. “However they can rest assured that they will still be dealing with the market leader, they will still be getting a great product at a fair price and equipment that Century are happy to put its own name behind. “Century Equipment Distributors (NZ) is the only Wellington-based importer and distributor of automotive equipment,” says John. “We will stay in Wellington as this is where home is and it is central to all of New Zealand. We can usually deliver any equipment in New Zealand within a 24 hour period.” REAdER REPly 01124

Volkswagen’s lucky seven New Zealand has become the first country in the Asia Pacific region to complete the master technician programme by qualifying seven master technicians according to Volkswagen standards. The aim of the program is to secure and further enhance the service quality of the Volkswagen brand worldwide, thereby increasing customer satisfaction. In the current economic climate customers are keen to keep their vehicles in the highest possible condition and with seven master technicians on their team, Volkswagen NZ is now in a position to ensure this is possible. The certificates were presented to the Master Technicians by Volkswagen NZ general manager Dean Sheed at an awards ceremony in November. The awards ceremony was attended by all Volkswagen service managers and demonstrates the high esteem in which these qualifications are held and the commitment of Volkswagen NZ to developing its employees to the highest standards. To achieve Master status each technician completed rigorous training that comprised 14 modules combined into six courses over 18 months. The final exam is composed of five practical exams, three theory exams and a verbal communication exam. A total of six hours of testing for each participant is conducted over two days. The exams follow the strict guidelines from the
factory and were supervised by the regional technical training manager from Singapore, Mr Stephen Belling. “Aftersales support is an integral part of the support mechanism required to ensure total customer satisfaction after the sale,” says VW NZ national service manager, Steve Wilson. “This qualification is the start of a process which will see at least one Master Technician in each dealership in the future. The growth of the Volkswagen brand in New Zealand and the retention of highly-skilled staff is imperative for success. “VW importer (European Motor Distributors) sees this milestone as an important step to not only raise
technical competence but also to set the scene for others to follow. Volkswagen in New Zealand is growing faster than any other European Brand and is set to break records in the future.” (From left to right: Dean Sheed General Manager of Volkswagen NZ, Jared Lentfer of Ebbett Prestige, Mathew Archer of Euro City, Pierre Meyer of Giltrap Prestige, Anthony Johanson of Miles Continental, Neil Bauer of CCS, Darren Peattie of Bay Prestige, Scott Allchorne of Giltrap Prestige, Steve Wilson National Service Manager of Volkswagen NZ.) Corghi deal kicks off new year Stocks Equipment is launching into 2012 by introducing an all-new Corghi wheel balancer and offering a special deal on its high-tech Corghi A2025LL tyre changer, both Italian made and with a full two year warranty. Joining the Corghi range this month is the brand new EM9350, an automatic wheel balancer that features dynamic balancing on both sides of the rim. Utilising 230V single-phase power, this is a fastresponse, heavy-duty machine ideal for workshops with heavy workloads and is able to handle rims from 11-inch up to 28-inch in diameter. Among its features is a laser pointer that helps to position the wheel weights more quickly and more precisely. The inside wheel light makes it easier to take measurements, apply wheel weights and clean and check that the rim is not damaged. The spin unit has a reduced cycle time and higher performance, compared to other wheel balancers. The automatic measuring cycle and wheel slowing and electronic clamping system makes for easy operation and high productivity. Other features include electronic acquisition of diameter and distance, as well as positioning of adhesive weights at 3-6-12 o’clock. It is sized to work with high offset wheels without the need for spacers and, thanks to the large empty space between the body and flange, it is easy to reach the inner part of the wheel for cleaning and fixing the wheel weights. The pedal-operated clamping brake makes both the wheel clamping option easier, along with the application of wheel weights. A dual display control panel features quick and intuitive selection of the balancing mode and immediate access to the most common operating functions. Stocks Equipment is launching the new Corghi EM9350 in New Zealand at $6,495 plus GST. At the same time, Stocks Equipment is offering a
special deal on the leverless version of the popular Corghi A2025TIDV tyre changer at just $9,995 plus GST, and to add even more spice to the deal, Stocks is also selling the optional SP2000 Help Arm for removing low profile tyres as a bonus offer for half price at just $1,250 plus GST. “We wanted to kick off the year on a positive note and put all the bad economic news behind us and look forward, so this deal is all about opportunity – at these prices, the A2025LL and Help Arm models that we have in stock won’t hang around for very long,” says Stocks Equipment general manager William Singleton, adding that the deal will end when the current stock has run out. The A2025LL is an advanced tyre changer that is packed with lots of features. It comes in a single

phase and features dual speed with a 24" turntable, allowing clamping 24" from the outside of the rim, in a conventional tyre changer style. This makes it ideal for workshops that don’t have three phase power. It also has a two speed turntable with speeds of six and 15 RPM, which means that operators can remove tyres a lot quicker that tyre machines with only a single speed turntable. This model also features “Moto Inverter” which is an asynchronous motor with an integrated inverter (on-board control logic) developed by Corghi with built in safety equipment. It has an overload protection device which trips should the turntable jam, and resets itself when the control pedal is fully released, plus a self resetting integrated thermal cut– off should the Moto Inverter overheat. The A2025LL works extremely easily and effectively on all wheel types (including RFT and low profile). The leverless technology enables quick demounting and tried-and-tested conventional technology for mounting. Its greatest strengths are simplicity of use and absolute efficiency. It is compatible with wheel rim sizes up to 26" and wheel widths up to 14". REAdER REPly 01128
GM beefs up Volt safety
General Motors has announced enhancements to the vehicle structure and battery coolant system in the Chevrolet Volt that would further protect the battery from the possibility of an electrical fire occurring days or weeks after a severe crash. The enhancements come in response to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Preliminary Evaluation to examine post-severe crash battery performance. NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation on November 25, 2011, following a severe-impact lab test on a battery pack that resulted in an electrical fire six days later. The test was conducted to reproduce a coolant leak that occurred in a full-scale vehicle crash test last May that resulted in an electrical fire three

weeks later. Through the first 11 months of 2011, Volt owners accumulated nearly 20 million miles without an incident similar to the results in the NHTSA tests “The Volt has always been safe to drive. Now, we will go the extra mile to ensure our customers’ peace of mind in the days and weeks following a severe crash,” says GM senior vice president global product development Mary Barra. GM will conduct a program to further protect the Volt battery from the possibility of an electrical fire occurring days or weeks after a severe side crash. Modifications will: • Strengthen an existing portion of the Volt’s vehicle safety structure to further protect the battery pack in a severe side collision. • Add a sensor in the reservoir of the battery coolant system to monitor coolant levels. • Add a tamper-resistant bracket to the top of the battery coolant reservoir to help prevent potential coolant overfill. GM conducted four successful crash tests between
December 9 and 21 of Volts with the structural enhancement. The enhancement performed as intended. There was no intrusion into the battery pack and no coolant leakage in any of the tests. “These enhancements and modifications will address the concerns raised by the severe crash tests,” say Barra. “There are no changes to the Volt battery pack or cell chemistry as a result of these actions. We have tested the Volt’s battery system for more than 285,000 hours, or 25 years, of operation. We’re as confident as ever that the cell design is among the safest on the market.” The modifications and enhancements will be applied to all Volts, including vehicles sold in Europe. GM also says it will continue its leadership role in helping the Society of Automotive Engineers develop standards that will help tow truck operators, salvage yards and vehicle recyclers in the proper handling of electric vehicle components. GM will help develop educational materials that can be used by these stakeholders in the future. REAdER REPly 01128A

Elite offers sub 60 alignment
Kevin Glover and the new Hunter Hawkeye Elite wheel aligner at BJ Tyres in East Tamaki.
When Kevin Glover saw the performance figures for the all-new Hunter Elite, the next generation of the Hawkeye 3D wheel aligner range, he knew he’d have to get one for his East Tamaki store, BJ Tyres. In fact, he turned out to be the first purchaser of the Elite model in New Zealand, after it was introduced late last year by Hunter’s sole distributor Stocks Equipment and says it has lived up to its promise as the fastest wheel aligner on the market. “You can definitely do a wheel alignment check in under 60 seconds,” he says. But what is more important is that the new Hunter Hawkeye Elite has more than halved the time taken to do a complete alignment job, which has already increased his business in the few weeks since it was installed. BJ Tyres counts a number of panelbeaters in East Auckland as regular customers and says he often gets a call late on a Friday afternoon for two or three ‘rush jobs’ and it usually meant working late to complete them. But when two vehicles arrived one recent Friday at 4.30pm, they were both completed before 5pm. “The trade is certainly impressed we can give them such a speedy service with this machine,” adds Kevin. The Elite has also had a positive effect on the store’s retail business.
10
Kevin always offers wheel alignment with tyre jobs, but only a few were prepared to wait as much as 40 minutes with the old machine. But now he says they are happy with one minute for a check and then 10 or 12 minutes for a complete job. Kevin says the key to the high-speed work of the Elite are new, patented unique QuickGrip (quick release) adaptors and three-dimensional targets that slash set-up times to seconds, rather than minutes. They use springloaded clamping arms that adjust easily to various wheel sizes, along with a simple thumb lever to lock the clamp in place. They attach quickly, without having to worry about needing to perfectly centre the target, since the mounting position has no effect on measurement accuracy, gripping the tyre instead of the rim edge. This eliminates risk of damage to expensive alloy wheels – a protective rubber ring at the base of the adaptor provides the only contact with the wheel. As soon as the clamps are fitted, the computer in the Elite matches the readings to the data on the vehicle stored in its memory bank and the information is flashed on screen almost instantly, once the vehicle roll-forward is completed, thanks to the WinAlign alignment software which runs on the latest Windows 7 operating system.
www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz
“I’m surprised at how quick it all happens and you’ve got the castor and other information on the screen, as well as toe – I like that,” says Kevin. “The graphics are very clear and easy to understand,” he adds. He says the lighter weight of the adaptor and target assembly (they’re less than 3kg each) makes it easy to handle and install. Constructed from tough polymer materials, they can stand up to the rigours of daily workshop life and the target itself contains no electronics, so requires very little maintenance and there are no messy wires connecting the targets with the cabinet. Additionally, the assembly‘s ultra-compact profile creates more room in the work bay. Also new and patented on the HawkEye Elite are the digital imaging sensors, incorporating four highresolution cameras that instantly update adjustment readings on-screen – and adjust automatically for the height of the vehicle on the hoist. Working with the newly designed targets, HawkEye Elite sensors provide 3D modelling of wheel position and orientation for the most accurate alignment measurements. Kevin will also be the first in New Zealand to get the new Codelink
system fitted to his Elite, which automatically takes care of steering angle sensor settings and also allows for ESP system to be reset on European and other vehicles, further simplifying the alignment task. Other features that have won favour with Kevin are the larger 22-inch LCD monitor and the comprehensive vehicle data bank that has information on practically every vehicle on New Zealand roads. Live Ride Height targets also included with the package make alignments on Ford Falcons especially so much easier. The previous Hunter machine at the BJ Tyre store had completed more than 5000 alignments before it was traded in on the new Elite, which has already handled close to 500 since its installation last November. In the first two days of owning the Hunter Elite, Kevin Glover did 27 wheel alignments alone proving that not only is this new model extremely fast, but also very profitable. The Hunter Hawkeye Elite (HE421FMAB) is a premium model in the Hunter wheel alignment lineup, priced at $37,995 + GST, which includes delivery, installation and training. REAdER REPly 011210
BMW supply diesel engines to Toyota BMW Group and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) recently announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) concerning a mid-to-long-term collaboration on next-generation environment-friendly technologies. Under the MOU, the two companies agreed on a collaborative research in the field of next-generation lithium-ion battery technologies. Furthermore, they have agreed to identify and discuss other possible collaborative projects. In addition, Toyota Motor Europe (TME), TMC’s European subsidiary, and BMW Group have entered into a contract under which BMW Group is to supply 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre diesel engines to TME starting in 2014. The engines will be installed in certain Toyota-produced vehicles planned for sale in the European market. Through this agreement, Toyota plans to expand its European lineup and sales of fuel-efficient, low CO2-emission diesel-powered vehicles. “We are now joining forces to further develop environment-friendly technologies and to expand our innovation leadership in each of our segments, says BMW AG management board chairman Norbert Reithofer. “Supplying Toyota with our fuel efficient and dynamic diesel engines represents another important step in the planned expansion of our sales activities for engines and power train systems.” TMC President Akio Toyoda says it is a thrill to enter into this mid-to-longterm collaborative relationship with BMW, a company with its own culture and history from its many years of car manufacturing in Europe, and a company that makes cars that are fun to drive. Mr Toyoda says in the spirit of contributing to furthering the development of the automotive manufacturing industry and society, both companies will bring their knowledge concerning environmental technologies to the table and make ever-better cars. Not all oils are created equally
Many motorists are not aware that if their vehicle is fitted with low emission technology, the use of a wrong oil product can lead to severe and costly damage. “We have seen a growing number of diesel particulate filter (DPF) failures from passenger and light commercial vehicles being serviced with the incorrect lubricants,” says Tony Blackburn from Total Lubricants. “With stricter emission regulations being introduced, DPF units are now a common sight on many late model diesel vehicles from Europe and Asia and its imperative that the correct low SAPS lubricant is used when servicing such vehicles,” he says. Low SAPS lubricants contain a reduced proportion of sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur. Formulated with an all-new generation of additives, the Total Quartz Ineo range considerably increases the
12
efficiency of anti-pollution systems, particularly the DPF, as the content of metallic components in the lubricant is reduced by 50 percent, which serves to increase the life span and efficiency of the DPF. Total Quartz Ineo MC3 is a new low SAPS range of fully synthetic engine oils from Total Lubricants. It has been designed primarily for the lubrication of high performance petrol and diesel engines both normally aspirated and turbo charged. The results of years of exhaustive development these products are designed to provide maximum protection under the most extreme driving conditions and are compliant with the latest and strictest OEM approvals including Mercedes Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, Hyundai and Kia. The Quartz Ineo MC3 range is available in 2 viscosity grades: 5W-30 and 5W-40. REAdER REPly 011212A

Hankook wins design award A tyre that uses new technology to achieve a better balance between wet and dry performance and fuel efficiency has been recognised by the prestigious iF Design Awards in Germany. Hankook's Ventus S1 evo2 received a Product Design Award in the competition, which attracted more than 4300 entries from 48 countries. Established in 1953, the iF Design Awards are regarded as one of the three most important design competitions in the world. Products are judged on several criteria, including design quality, choice of materials, environmental impact, safety and degree of innovation. The Ventus S1 evo2 tyre features several innovations, such as triple-layered tread blocks which, as they wear down, increase the tyre's contact patch and therefore traction. The tyre also uses an innovative pattern of grooves to generate surface air turbulence, resulting in improved heat dissipation. The rubber compound of the tyre features a new high styrene polymer which reduces rolling resistance and therefore fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. In 2009, Hankook became the first tyre company ever to win an IF award – receiving recognition for both its environmentally-friendly enfren and Optimo 4S tyre patterns. The latest addition to Hankook's range of ultra-high performance (UHP) tyres, the Ventus S1 evo2 made its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011. The Ventus S1 evo2 was developed at Hankook's technical centre in Germany and incorporates knowledge acquired by the company as exclusive tyre supplier to the German-based DTM touring car championship. The iF Product Design Awards ceremony will take place in Munich on February 10. REAdER REPly 011212b

Barricade is a new multifuel compatible hose that eliminates fuel vapour loss thanks to a unique five-layer GreenShield barrier technology used in its manufacture says Gates. The company says is one of the most environmentallyresponsible fuel line hoses in the industry. According to Gates, Barricade fuel injection hose copes easily with corrosive fuels, and is compatible with virtually all fuel – including E-85, Methanol and Ethanol based fuels. The Barricade fuel injection line has GreenShield barrier technology which is a unique barrier material that reduces vapour permeation into the atmosphere and improves flexibility. It is comprised of five layers: • Barrier tube: Synthetic rubber tubing designed to resist high heat, oils and aggressive fuels like ethanol. • GreenShield barrier: Patentpending thermoplastic material that delivers the lowest permeation in the industry! • Adhesion layer: Serves as a second defence against oils and aggressive fuels if the tube and/ or thermoplastic barrier become compromised. • Reinforcement: Spiral textile reinforcement gives resistance against
internal pressures and offers best in class working MPa. • Cover: Synthetic rubber cover which is fuel and oil resistant, with outstanding ozone and heat resistance (a temperature range of -40°C to 135°C), this layer covers and protects the underlying components. The Barricade fuel injection hose is made to high-quality standards so that workshops can offer a premium product to customers who will benefit from less downtime of hose replacement, according to Gates. It says Barricade hose is the best in its class for both high-pressure environments and low-permeation REAdER REPly 011214b needs.

Knowledge for the new era
As vehicle systems grow in complexity and technicians spend an increasing amount of time performing in-depth diagnostic procedures, demand for technical training gains momentum, according to Bosch. Bosch says sales of workshop test equipment are growing accordingly, with many business owners investing in engine testing modules, complex diagnostic scanners, and even wheel service equipment – once the realm of tyre and undercar specialists.
There is now a well-established group of workshops who have diversified their services to the extent whereby they are now equipped to meet the demands of almost every vehicle on the road – no matter how complex their electrical systems. With so much investment in technical equipment, though, it is important for workshop operators to ensure there is sufficient knowledge inside their business to operate it at full potential. Time spent self-learning test procedures for various components is time better spent increasing daily vehicle turnover and, in turn, workshop revenue. It is also important to ensure every technician in the business has a similar level of technical training. Given how prevalent diagnostic procedures have become, there is little point in larger workshops having just one or two staff members with adequate training. Why? Because these staff members will be constantly interrupted to provide support to others, which will noticeably affect productivity. Implementing a blanket training regime across the entire business will mean that all staff are suitably trained; both in terms of modern vehicle systems, and the way in which to adequately test and replace
them using appropriate diagnostic equipment. Bosch says its technical training program for New Zealand has been specifically designed to equip workshops for the new technology relevant to the market. These training courses also offer invaluable support to users of Bosch diagnostic equipment, making them the ideal partner for workshops that have made recent investments in this area. And this ultimately sums up the unique value of the entire training program. Given Bosch is the key innovator across nearly all engine management systems, manufactures many of their replacement components, and designs the equipment to test them, the company says it is undoubtedly in the best position to offer the appropriate diagnostic training. If you are a workshop owner looking to further empower your business, it is time to invest in technical training. Bosch’s 2012 Technical Training Program for Australia and New Zealand can be obtained by calling +61 3 9541 5553 or emailing automotive.training@au.Bosch.com. REAdER REPly 011216
Another successful round for Bosch The annual Golf day for the NZ Bosch Car service and Bosch Diesel service network was held on December 2 and culminated in the annual Network Awards dinner which was held at the Novotel Auckland Airport. Hosted by Bosch NZ country manager Mark Gardiner and his New Zealand team members Mark Malloy, Sean Randal and Lee Norris, the Golf day has become an annual event and drew members of both networks from both North and South Islands. The event was also attended by senior members of Bosch management including Ken Ford who is the Asia Pacific regional president for automotive aftermarket and
Thomas Winter, the marketing director for Asia Pacific, as well as Oceania network manager Mark Jones. Ken Ford spoke briefly to the assembled guests and reiterated that despite the small size and challenging nature within the New Zealand market, and the challenges of the varied carpark, it is still one that is important to Bosch and that the company will continue to support ongoing product initiatives and training programmes. Stolen vehicles now online A list of all vehicles stolen in New Zealand in the past six months is available at http://www.police.govt.nz/ stolen/vehicles Deputy Commissioner of the New Zealand Police Mike Bush says the new initiative is free, up-to-date and provides a simple, on-the-spot way of checking on a vehicle. The new database was officially launched at a meeting of the Crime Prevention Partnership Forum (CPPF) in Wellington last year. “This has been an initiative that‘s been developed in partnership with the CPPF, a group that represents a wide range of businesses that want to help Police to prevent crime,” says Mr Bush. Many of the businesses involved in CPPF will get great benefits from the database. “It will be a resource for security guards, insurance companies, motel owners, scrap metal dealers and community policing patrols,” says Mr Bush. “It also has obvious benefits for people buying second-hand vehicles, garages that service vehicles and service stations where petrol thefts can regularly be associated with stolen vehicles.” The database allows the search via registration plate number, VIN, engine or chassis number. This is run against all outstanding stolen flagged numbers. A hit will return the make, vehicle type and colour, and when the vehicle was reported stolen. The datacovers vehicles that have been stolen during the past six months for all of New Zealand or in a single police district or combination of districts.

Potentially, it gives police many more pairs of eyes out there. People can do their own checking and then report it to Police, says Mr Bush. It‘s an extra deterrent for offenders because
now anyone with a smart phone can run the vehicle through the database on the spot, The risk of being caught with a stolen vehicle has just risen considerably. REAdER REPly 011218

T&E Tools Australia have introduced a new range of tool chests and roll cabinets purposebuilt for the Australasian market. All the boxes and cabinets in the new range feature extra heavy duty ball bearing drawer slides, with heavy drawer pulls giving the drawers greater rigidity. The slides are of heavy construction with doubled up slides on the extra deep drawers. Heavy gauge steel construction with extra welds and super duty large diameter polymide casters on the roll cabs ensure top quality, says Sulco Tools and Equipment. The boxes are finished with bright red powder-coated enamel with UV stabilisers protecting them from paint fade. The largest offering in the range is the all-new monster 1800mm (72 inch) wide 21 drawer super roll cabinet on offer at a very competitive price point, according to Sulco. This cab has 21 drawers and six heavy-duty braked casters. The dimensions are 1830mm wide x 1180mm high x 660mm deep. A 40mm thick laminated wooden butcher block top is fitted to the top of this cabinet. At $2700.00 plus GST Sulco Tools says this cabinet is great buying.
New 306 piece tool kit
T&E have recently added a new set to its range of tool kits. Part number 9889 comprises 306 pieces of selected most-used socket wrenches, ratchets and accessories plus a range of hand wrenches and spanners plus pliers and other service tools, all housed in an extra large, 10-drawer tool chest, with all ball bearing slides. All the sockets and drive accessories are stored in formed pockets in the top layer of the chest for easy access. It’s simple to ensure that all the small items are safely placed back where they belong. There is also space in the chest for additional tools to be added later. If an item is misplaced or lost all components in sets are also available individually. Summit heavy vehicle jacks
Sulco says the new range of its midpriced Summit heavy vehicle jacks are made in an advanced manufacturing facility in China featuring computerised machining equipment. Sulco says the new range will meet the needs of workshops seeking top quality air hydraulic jacks at affordable prices. Four jacks with capacity from 15 to 60 tonnes are currently on offer from a wide range of models available ex-factory. Sulco says the advanced manufacturing technique ensures that all components are machined to exact tolerance which is critical when manufacturing jacks of this type. Sulco recommends that workshops which service trucks, buses and tractors should check out the advantages of these new Summit jacks before making a purchasing decision.
The best vice option.
A new range of European-made fully forged steel vices is now available for the first time in NZ. Sulco says that Fortissimo forged steel vices offer far greater strength and rigidity than traditional cast iron or cast semi-steel vices and will give a much longer service life. Initial shipments will arrive in February 2012. Sulco believes its customers want better quality because buying solely on price can be costly in the longer term. The new vice range includes the Fortissimo model in sizes 125mm, 150mm and 200mm jaw widths. Being fully forged C45 grade steel with induction hardened jaws and anvil, Sulco says the manufacturer claims it has never had a broken vice and more than 80 percent of its production goes to Germany which it says has the highest standard for vices in the world. Fortissimo vices have cross milled steel jaw grips. They are available with clip on forged steel pipe holding jaws as an option for tradespeople working with pipes. The vice slide can be adjusted for lateral movement by adjustment screws in the vice body. They are of compact and streamlined design compared to big heavy cast iron vices. For price sensitive buyers, the fully forged C45 steel Kanex range of models in jaw widths 125mm and 150mm will deliver very rugged long-life vices at a lesser price than the Fortissimo. Fortissimo Vices are available by calling Sulco Tools on 0800 800 488 or selected tool stockists nationwide.

and in a new development it has the complete range of Hanatech scan tools, scopes and accessories. The JBT scanner is a budget scan tool priced below $4,000 that Sulco says is excellent piece of entry level equipment for a workshop which has good coverage of most vehicles found in New Zealand. Most of its software development was done locally. Carman/Nextech has been at the forefront of diagnostic tool development for many years according to Sulco. Carman/Nextech provide diagnostic solutions to the Japanese and Korean OEM as well as developing its range of aftermarket hand held tools which provides data on a wide selection of European, US, and Australian brands as well as the Korean and Japanese vehicles. Nextech staff has also spent time in New Zealand to further develop the software of their scanners to cater for the huge diversity of Japanese cars found here according to Sulco and it also understands that Carman/ Nextech is Australasia’s largest selling scan tool brand. The Carman Scan Lite is an entrylevel portable hand-held compact scanner which is robust enough to survive the New Zealand workshop environment according to
Sulco. It has menu driven software which is easily navigated. Sulco says the user-friendly Carman AT with colour touch screen technology has been its best selling scan tool for the last 12 months while it says the Carman VCI has been its best selling PC-based scan tool that offers additional vehicle repair data.. The Autoboss V30 from SPX has very good coverage of European and Asian vehicles according to Sulco while it says the user-friendly Swedish Opus CMT Pro is a PC-based wireless scanner that has great coverage of the latest European models. Sulco says the Opus CMT Pro is particularly easy to use with Audi and Volkswagen passenger and commercial vehicles. For European car repair specialists Sulco says the English Autologic scan tool is the most capable on the New Zealand market, offering the functionality of a franchise dealer tool with coverage of all vehicle systems. Sulco says that Autologic aims to match or exceed OEM functionality with factory trained technical support and practical training allowing workshops to compete with franchises for specialist work. “We firmly believe you won’t find a more capable aftermarket scan tool than the Autologic anywhere in the world, and yes that is a bold claim,” says Sulco general manager Brett Higgins. As well as distributing the complete range of new Hanatech equipment, Sulco is now also ably equipped to offer current Hanatech/OTC owners full service and support for their old tools as well as the option to upgrade to new tools and accessories. Modern diagnostics from AECS
Launch Staff pairing the X431 Diagun wireless connector with the hand held PDA.
Launch Master X431 post production continuous testing rig
For more than 11 years AECS has been supplying NZ (and Australian) workshops with automotive test equipment, training and technical support for the past 11 years. One of the core product lines supplied by AECS is the Launch scan tool range. “We have chosen the Launch scanners as most other scan tools can only do some sections on some cars,” says AECS director Herbert Leijen. “Many equipment suppliers state that you always need a number of different tools to cover all the vehicles you work on, as not one scan tool is complete,” he says. “With our diagnostic background we dispute that and we believe that the Launch does cover all the cars technicians would work on with maybe one or two exceptions. “We have recently been to the Launch factory in China and have seen its vast industrial complex made up of factories and research centres. In our view is this unparalleled anywhere in the world, not one of the equipment manufacturers we have previously visited is as large as this one,” he says. “When we were at the factory we found out that Launch not only makes its own tools on the production line but also builds instrument clusters for a European car brand. Launch does various projects like this from time to time to maximise return on its specialist automated production lines,” says Herbert.
Launch Wheel alignment equipment R&D and calibration department
Size of resources Herbert says the size of the Launch Company makes its scan tools really affordable. “The company would not have been this large if they did not sell huge numbers of their tools worldwide and if the tool was not the best on the market,” he says. “To maintain market share they need to reinvest in the tools but due to the company’s size they have more than sufficient resource and the advances I have seen in the past few years are phenomenal. “AECS keep up with new developments to make sure that the customer is kept provided with this new technology and kept informed of how to use the equipment efficiently.”
AECS appoints more staff “The demand for training and equipment has increased dramatically in the last few years, and this has put a lot of pressure on AECS,” says Herbert. “Late last year we decided to employ two highly skilled people. One will assist us in the technical support and development of new technique. Paul has worked for the past seven years in the UK for the Williams F1 team as a sensor technician. I am sure that AECS customers will meet him now and then. “Paul adds strength to the role that Peter has within AECS. A university graduate with a BE Hons in electronics, Peter is involved with the numerous R&D projects we have underway at present.”
New training module Herbert says that one of Peter's roles has been the development of a new training seminar. “The launch of this seminar is for the YES association in February, and it will be rolled out later in the year throughout the country,” says Herbert. “The training seminar deals with some technical problems we recently encountered on late model vehicles. It explains how to easily spot these problems through the information displayed by the equipment,” he says. “One example is how a drive by wire vehicle throttle control motor response slows down due to noise induced on its position sensor. The problem lay in the capacitance of the earth cable, but how do you find? It is simple, once you know what to look for,” says Herbert. REAdER REPly 011227

Business as usual? Motor Equipment News talks to the dismantling trade about the effect of the Japanese tsunami and earthquake as well as the emissions regulations on the supply and demand for new and recycled automotive parts.
Dodson Autospares director Harry Dodson says that personally he hasn’t noticed a negative effect from the Japanese situation in regard to his main supplier of parts, and that prices have remained relatively stable. “Our primary supplier has complained to us that he has not been getting the amount of stock he would like, but he has continued to ship the same amount of containers to us as before the earthquake and tsunami,” says Harry. “It’s the second-tier supply that has been very scarce – because they have been unable to source product for us.” Steve Trevett from Toyotaz Galore says he has found getting containers of parts out of Japan postearthquake and tsunami has been a slower process. “The supply chain has certainly been affected and sourcing parts for both early and late-model product has become more difficult and more expensive,” he says. “We import as much ex-Japan stock as we are able to, but we also dismantle NZ new vehicles to cater for the local supply and demand,” says Steve. “There has been a noticeable increase in price for stock out of Japan but the price of locallysourced items has been relatively stable,” He says. Harry says he has been cautious about purchasing damaged whole vehicles from Japan particularly with regard to vehicles that may have water damage and contamination. “I put procedures in place to guard against possible contamination, and sent Geiger counter equipment to our main supplier in Japan with a request for new stock inspection procedures to be followed before containers were packed and shipped,” he says. Despite the downturn in insurance claims last year as people used their cars less or heeded the safety messages about driving more carefully, Harry says it’s still a competitive market for parts and panels in New Zealand as well as
28

replacement engines. “People are still replacing engines and there was a small increase in the number we sold towards the end of 2011,” he says. “I think the automotive servicing market is a reflection of the economy, with people deferring maintenance and skipping services.” Steve Trevett says that even through the Rugby World Cup in 2011 business for Toyotaz Galore remained consistent as people still needed parts for their vehicles. “Our aftermarket parts and our local parts sold consistently, we didn’t notice a great deal of change across the market,” he says. However, Harry Dodson says that he sees the introduction of tighter new emission rules governing the importation of second hand vehicles as being a positive one for the dismantling industry. “There will be people out there who will not be able to afford the more expensive cars on offer-there are people out there who can’t afford to invest $15,000 in a newer second hand car and they will repair the old one to keep it going.” Steve Trevett agrees. “Unlike the insurance companies who want genuine parts for panel repairs, and rightly so, we find motorists who are paying for their own repairs and maintenance still want the cheapest possible option be it aftermarket or second hand.” REAdER REPly 011228

Formula SAE-A hat trick for Monash University The Monash University Motorsport Team stamped its authority on the Formula SAE-Australasia competition by scoring its third successive outright victory in the competition. Famous for its winged Formula SAE-A car designs developed in the Monash University wind tunnel, the 2011 Monash University Motorsport team performed consistently across the nine scoring events to take the win with 829.3 points to beat University of Western Australia with a total score of 754.1 and Edith Cowan University on 739.5 points.
Organised by the Society of Automotive Engineers - Australasia (SAE-A), the international competition is run over the academic year and the scoring events were held at the Victoria University Werribee campus training track near Melbourne from 15 to 18 December. The Formula SAE-A host company for 2011 was GM Holden and engineering director Greg Tyus welcomed 23 teams from universities in all mainland Australian states and from India, Japan, and New Zealand. He said the Formula SAE-A education
experience is unique because students work in a team environment facing deadline challenges, while optimising their design, just like it happens in industry. He said Australia needs the best talent in its automotive sector, which is a cornerstone for many other key industries. Now in its 11th year, this engineering education experience in a race car is part of a prestigious international series of Formula SAE competitions held throughout Asia, Europe and the USA. Competing teams of engineering students design, build, test and compete in small race cars designed to a specific formula and a $50,000 budget limit.
The 2011 winners Design Patron for Formula SAE-A is former Brabham and RALT race car designer Ron Tauranac and Senior Design Judge is Hyundai Technical Trainer Pat Clarke. Ron Tauranac said the competition is a huge learning opportunity for the students.
Ron Tauranac said that in addition to the design and construction process, the teams have a chance to learn from each other and the judges when they come together at the end of the year. “In the judging, we prefer to educate them, and after the judging we try to revisit teams for mini workshops,” he said. Monash University Motorsport defended their 2009 and 2010 Formula SAE-A titles with a lighter car with a more fuel efficient engine. The team won first places in the Cost, Skid Pad, and Endurance events, second place in the Autocross and high scores in the Design, Endurance and Economy categories. In addition to the outright Formula SAE-A prize, they were awarded the prestigious FISITA (International Federation of Automotive Engineering) Engineering Excellence Award. Monash University achieved all this after facing an “all-nighter” on the Friday to remedy engine problems. REAdER REPly 011230

Measuring 25 years of progress In 2012, Volvo Trucks will begin production of its most powerful truck yet – the 550kW (750hp) Volvo FH16. The year marks exactly 25 years since Volvo first launched its 16-litre engine back in 1987, so to find out what has really changed in that time, British freelance truck journalist Brian Weatherley put
the original Volvo 345kW (470hp) F16 head-to-head with the new Volvo FH16750 in a heritage haulage challenge. Both trucks were driven a distance of 2,200 metres on a seven percent gradient, up one of Sweden’s toughest ascents – known as the Gothenburg hill located just outside Jönköping.
For Brian, driving the Volvo F16-470 again after so many years brought back a great many memories and served as a reminder of how advanced the original 16-litre was when it was first released. However, the relative ease with which the Volvo FH16-750 powered up the Gothenburg hill really hit home and
showed just how much progress has been made since then. Brian Weatherley is the former editorin-chief of ‘Commercial Motor’ and ‘Truck & Driver’, as well as the founder of the Biglorryblog. He is currently a UK International Truck of the Year jury member. REAdER REPly 011232A

Crane choice a critical factor
Oceania LED Ltd says picking the right crane was critical in building a new fleet of truck-mounted ‘big screens’ to entertain Rugby World Cup fans. Oceania LED Ltd built two truck-screen units worth around million dollars each to service the RWC and a growing number of events around New Zealand. Each 8.4m x 4.8m LED screen is stored in three sections inside the truck, then erected and dismantled using a Unic URW504 crane mounted behind the cab, supplied by Crane Sales New Zealand. “We looked at a range of new and second-hand crane options but we were advised that second-hand cranes would make it hard to achieve certification,” says Oceania director Bob Wilson. “We looked at a number of cranes, but in the end, the Unic was the only crane that ticked all the boxes.” Oceania needed a cable crane to lift the fragile LED screens straight up and down to erect and pull down. The crew uses a handheld remote control unit to manoeuvre the 800kg screen panels. “Remote control is a key to the operation. We can move the screen sections a millimetre or two at a time with the trigger-based remote. It also minimises the risks of damaging the screens,” says Bob Wilson. Building the trucks to carry the big screens, plus a crane to comply with New Zealand transport regulations, was a challenge. It meant there was a very small footprint for the crane, and the crane needed to be raised 250mm higher than the chassis
to clear the truck body. Oceania overcame the challenges and now has two mobile truck screens that are totally self-sufficient. Each can travel with its own generator and PA system. “The Unic crane can pick up or put down an 800kg screen panel or an 800kg generator up to 10.8m away, so that means the truck crane is all we need to set up a screen either on the truck or on another structure. “Before we put these truck units on the road,
mobile screens often needed third-party cranes to erect and dismantle them. That can be a big cost and it takes time. Our trucks can be in Wellington for an event one day, pull the screen down in an hour, and then drive off to the other end of the country to set up again the next day.” After the RWC concluded, the trucks had a busy summer travelling to concert and winery tours and other big events. Excellence in refinishing The WorldSkills 2011 competition wrapped up in London with Drew Avery proving his technical skills in vehicle refinishing by winning a Medallion of Excellence. More than 931 competitors from around the world took part in October’s event competing in 46 skill areas. The New Zealand team won seven Medallions of Excellence. “The competition has been one of the most beneficial experiences of my life,” says Drew. “I learned new skills and tested new technology, such as using water-borne products which will go a long way to furthering my skills in refinishing.” Drew says he’s always had an interest in cars and motorbikes. After finishing school he completed a ‘taster’ automotive course and he was hooked. He enrolled in a preapprenticeship course and was offered a job at Stokes Valley Collision Repair Centre in the Hutt Valley. Once he completed his course through correspondence Drew then
signed up with the NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation (MITO) to do an apprenticeship in collision repair and achieve a National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Body). For more than four years Drew has been working for Stokes Valley Collision Repair Centre and he says he loves the diversity of the job and takes pride in delivering a good service for his customers. “I take a dent in the car, repair it, get the colour match, and then paint the repair. It’s a simple enough process, but you have to be spot on,” says Drew. In 2009 he won the State Refinishing Apprentice of the Year Award, winning a place with the State smash repair team in the Hamilton ITM400. He was also named the inaugural Apprentice of the Year in the Hutt Valley Business Excellence Awards. “This job has done so much for me,” says Drew, “I have had the opportunity to travel and compete throughout New Zealand and

overseas. What started as a job has now become my career and one day I hope to operate my own business.” The WorldSkills 2011 New Zealand team also included Andre Prinsloo who
competed strongly in the autobody repair category and Curtis Hartley who represented the team in automobile technology. REAdER REPly 011234

For the painting of rims and add-on parts, Spies Hecker says its Permahyd Silver Star base coat for fine metallic finishes is an ideal solution. Thanks to its extra-fine effect pigments, Spies Hecker says that Permahyd Silver Star base coat is perfect for the painting of rims and add-on parts such as mirror housings. “Such vehicle parts are usually coated in extremely fine shades of silver. With Silver Star base coat, Spies Hecker now has an excellent material for paintwork repairs and original finishes,” says Spies Hecker technical manager Frank Barduna. “The new Silver Star is our response to bodyshop demand for a bright and fine shade of silver,” he says. “The microscopic metal pigments yield a smooth, aluminium-like gloss.
Refinishers achieve the brightest effects if they spray a film of clear coat straight onto the surfacer before base coat application and then lightly sand the surface to prevent the effect from being marred by variations in substrate texture.” The VOC-compliant base coat can be recoated with any Permasolid clear coat applied in 1.5 coats. Ultra-high tensile first for Mazda Mazda Motor Corporation has become the first car manufacturer to successfully develop vehicle components using 1,800 MPa ultra-high tensile steel. The super strength steel will debut in the all-new Mazda CX-5 crossover SUV set to launch in New Zealand in early 2012. Mazda’s new production technology uses 1,800 MPa ultra-high tensile steel to fabricate bumper beams, which fit inside the front and rear bumpers and mitigate damage in the event of a collision. The bumper bars are 20 percent stronger and 4.8 kilograms lighter than previous versions and are a key part of Mazda’s next-generation, lightweight and highly rigid vehicle architecture. The new body architecture was developed as part of Mazda’s Skyactiv Technology programme and incorporates a new energy absorbing structure as well as an expanded use of high tensile steel to reduce weight. Mazda CX-5 SKYACTIV-Body
The use of high tensile steel enables vehicle parts to be thinner yet still retain the same degree of strength. This leads to significant savings in vehicle weight. Reducing the weight of bumper beams is particularly important because, as they are incorporated into the body structure at the farthest point from the vehicle’s centre of gravity, their weight has a considerable effect on dynamic performance and responsiveness. They must also be strong to provide sufficient collision protection. For these reasons, a method of mass producing the parts using stronger steel has been highly sought after. However, stronger materials are less pliant and therefore absorb less energy in a collision. To overcome this, Mazda conducted extensive research into how bumper beams deform in a crash, and created a new design that absorbs energy more efficiently. Mazda is committed to reducing vehicle weight and improving dynamic performance while also maintaining a high level of body rigidity and excellent crashworthiness, in order to provide all its customers with driving pleasure and outstanding environmental and safety performance. Emotions and dynamics of colour DuPont develops an annual colour trend show to share with the world’s leading automotive manufacturers as they seek to develop colour palettes for future vehicles. This year’s trend show, Sense of Colour, showcases the emotions and dynamics of colour. The senses play an important role in understanding if a colour is loud or quiet, powerful or somber, exotic or sophisticated. DuPont Performance Coatings demonstrates the influences of colours by how tasteful, touching reminiscent or calming a colour will react with consumer preferences and moods. The 2011 DuPont trend show is segmented into four groups, as follows: Déjà vu – The colours in this group are intense and meaningful as DuPont remembers similar versions of these colours from the past. Rich greens and reds like “Green Velvet” and “Flashback” are historic colours that symbolise thoughtfulness, heritage, comfort and stability. New sparkling effects and intense colours bring a modern fit to white and dark red. Modern shades of gray and beige bring
relevance and quality to the hues, favorites for a mature market and exclusive vehicles. Sound of silence – Although the colours in this group are slightly muted and quiet, the calming colours featured in this group are determined to make their mark. The eco-friendly hybrids and energy-efficient technologies are thought provoking inspirations for the future. In this group, colour is influenced by nature’s palette and the fast-growing world of technology. Sophisticated metallic, soft hues “Crescendo” and “Silent Auction” and earthy tones “Minor Gamut” and “Speechless” coexist in this group, and its dynamic make-up is a natural trend for global consideration. Touch of Blue – This group focuses on the intense emotional attributes of colour, inspired by the environment. Home accessories and interior design inspire some of the bright and rich blues in this group. Fashion inspires this group, as well, particularly in the pale blue and grayish undertones. The sense of familiarity and dramatic
impulses of the light metallic and chromatic hues make this group popular among all vehicle segments, which includes contrasting sober shades like “Tactile Teal” and “Tickled Blue.” DuPont has tracked blue trends in all markets, including automotive to best new style spaces for the automotive segment. This demand is expected to grow as the global focus on blue increases. Matter of Taste – The exaggerated and unusual colours featured in this group offer a creative menu of colours that spotlight international flavors. Powerful shades of yellow, green, pink and purple bring excitement to a fearless group of colours. Caramel, tangerine and other savory colours are eye-catching and perfect for new vehicle launches, brand colours, concept vehicles, limited editions and the aftermarket. They put the individual taste of the driver at the forefront and include colours such as “Sweet Caramel” and “Berry Fusion.” REAdER REPly 011235A www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz

Return of the Golden Age? Bernard Carpinter reports on the renaissance men of NZ motorcycle racing.
Andrew Stroud leads Ray Clee at Manfeild Photo by fotocd.co.nz
New Zealand motorcycle racing is on the up, with strong entries for the present season and new stars emerging after a period of stagnation. The Suzuki International Tri-Series, raced over three rounds in December, illustrated this resurgence, although it also showed that we cannot quite match the standard of the top Australians right now. We still have a way to go to get back to our earlier golden ages, such as when Aaron Slight came so close to winning the World Superbike Championship, Simon Crafar won a 500cc Grand Prix and Andrew Stroud – who had competed in both those series – won the world BEARS (British European American Racing Series) on the bike designed and built in Christchurch by John Britten. A little before that Graeme Crosby won the old Formula One motorbike world championship, and finished second in the 500cc championship. In the early 1970s Ginger Molloy and Keith Turner both also finished second in the world 500cc championship, both times to the great Giacomo Agostini, and Kim Newcombe led it on a bike he had built himself before he was killed in a crash. Hugh Anderson won world championships in the smaller classes and, in

a slightly different form of racing, Robert Holden, Bruce Anstey and Shaun Harris won TT races on the Isle of Man. We have been short of stars since the Slight-CrafarStroud generation and several of our top riders are in their late 30s or early 40s. Stroud himself is 44 and the father of eight, but he is fit and fast and he won the 2010 and 2011 New Zealand Superbike Championships. Indeed, Hamilton-based Stroud also won the TriSeries Superbike class – for modified road bikes with about 200hp from their 1000cc engines - on his David Reid Homes Suzuki GSX-R1000 although he

finished first only once in his six races. That was the second race at Manfeild, in round two. Rising star Nick Cole, 25 and also from Hamilton, achieved his first victory at the top level when intelligent riding in very difficult conditions brought him the win in the first Manfeild race on his Kawasaki ZX-10. Cole, a former 600cc Supersport champion just starting his second season in Superbikes, rode a very strategic race. A damp track forced the riders to start with wet-weather tyres but during the race the track dried out and the tyres took a hammering. Cole restrained himself early on to conserve his tyres, so he could charge later on when others were coping with worn-out tyres. Ray Clee had a big lead on his Suzuki but Cole reeled him in. “I could see Ray’s tyres were getting wrecked and he was sliding around, so I thought I’ll make my charge now,” says Cole. He grabbed the lead on the last lap, getting a better drive out of the hairpin. Wellington’s Sloan Frost, also in his 20s, had some bad luck during the series but still managed a third and a fourth on his BMW S1000RR. Rookie Scott Moir, an accomplished rider in several other

like someone had turned the key off,” says Stroud. “I pulled off and Robbie and Craig [Shirriffs] came past. But then it started again and it was fine till the end of the race.” He finished third, behind Bugden and Shirriffs. In race two, Stroud tailed the Australian through the first half of the race, but lost ground when he got held up by a lapped rider.

categories including motocross, did very well in his first Superbike races and finished fifth in the series on his Honda CBR1000RR, one place behind the young but much more experienced Hayden Fitzgerald from New Plymouth on another Honda. Of the more established riders, Craig Shirriffs from Feilding scored two podium finishes on his Suzuki but did not finish the other two races he contested. He did not race in the final round at Wanganui. Ray Clee from Kumeu had been very fast in earlier seasons but in recent times he had lost some of his pace – mainly because he builds race engines for other riders and gets so busy before the season he does not have time to prepare himself properly. This time he managed to get in some pre-season racing at minor events with his Suzuki and he was back to his best, very nearly beating Stroud in the second heat at Manfeild. Going back to the first round at Hampton Downs, Australian Robbie Bugden, a former New Zealand champion, won both the races riding a Suzuki for Peter “Red” Fenton’s Christchurch-based Triple R team. Bugden, who has had some great battles with Stroud over the years, was race-sharp after contesting the Australian Superbike Championship but he did not have things all his own way. Stroud led the first race till a gremlin struck. “It was
These two meetings were the lead-up to the big one - Wanganui, a street race with history going back to the early 1950s and always attracting at least 10,000 fans. The tight, bumpy little Cemetery Circuit (yes, it goes through the town cemetery) is quite different from a proper racetrack and usually it takes riders a few visits before they can really go fast. It doesn’t pay to make mistakes, because most of the corners have no run-off and if you go too fast you hit a hay bale or worse. In 2010 Australian Dan Stauffer amazed the locals by winning the Robert Holden Memorial feature race at his first attempt, riding a Yamaha for Brian Bernard’s Wanganui-based team. At his second appearance, with the same team, he excelled himself by winning the two preliminary races as well as the feature event. With a background in motocross he was not too worried about having the bike bouncing and sliding around. Stroud put up a good fight in two of the races but
was hindered by problems getting the suspension and brakes to work the way he wanted them to. Cole is great on street circuits and he finished second in the feature races, after posting second and third in the first two heats. He was handicapped by qualifying fourth, which put him on the outside of the front row and left him vulnerable to getting pushed wide at the first corner. With a better position on the start grid he might have pushed Stauffer really hard. The two preliminary heats were the final points races in the Tri-Series and Stroud’s second and third placings were all he needed to wrap up the series for the fourth year in a row. Cole was second overall and Clee, who had scored a fifth and a fourth in the Wanganui points races, third. A fourth in heat one helped Fitzgerald finish fourth overall, ahead of fellow Honda riders Scott Moir and Ryan Hampton. Stauffer appeared only at Wanganui. The class immediately below Superbikes is 600cc Supersport and this is where ambitious young riders have to make their mark. And Jaden Hassan did just that at the first round of the Tri-Series. The tall, lean 17-year-old Aucklander, who has been getting coaching from Graeme Crosby, won both his races from a strong field including national champion Dennis Charlett from Christchurch and Glen Skachill from Wellington. Hassan rode a Yamaha, the other two Suzukis. Skachill, 21, struck back with two wins at Manfeild, Hassan second both times. At Wanganui Skachill and Charlett raced nose-to-tail through both races, each scoring a first and a second. Skachill, who is aiming to move up to Superbikes next season, won the series from Charlett, as Hassan did not go to Wanganui. Looking further into the future, the series saw the racing debut of Andrew Stroud’s oldest son Jacob, just turned 13. Jacob is well known in the paddock as he has always accompanied his father to the circuits and his knowledge of motorcycle racing is such that in recent years he has often been asked to help with race commentaries. An intelligent young man – he skipped a year at school – Jacob acquitted himself very well on his Suzuki RG150 two-stroke in the Ultra-Lite class so don’t be surprised to see his name featuring prominently in the coming years.
