The bucket list Another year draws to a close and what an eventful one it was. I think that the festivity and wonderful atmosphere created by the Rugby World Cup (even before the All Blacks won it in that nail biting final game) showed the true Kiwi spirit of mate-ship and hospitality is still very much alive and kicking. Despite the many dramas at home and abroad, as Kiwis we have much to be thankful for and positive about. Our exports are creeping up, and tourism continues to grow as more and more international airlines continue to fly direct routes from their overseas hubs to Auckland, Christchurch, Rotorua, and Queenstown. As an example US carrier Continental airlines have announced they will start a direct service from Auckland to Houston using a new Boeing 787 Dreamliner next year. I haven’t been to visit the lone star state since 1992 and I’m sorely tempted to revisit my bucket list and book a ticket on the inaugural flight. A bucket list for those who aren’t familiar with the expression is a list of things you want to do before you kick the bucket! It is a good thing to have as a measure of goals

and objectives and I encourage every one of you all to have one written down, and tick things off as you can. They don’t have to be huge or outlandish goals, but things that are achievable such as a holiday in Europe or learning to play golf, you get the general idea. Traditionally the Christmas/January period has been important for us all to get some much needed rest and to enjoy some leisure away from the office and the workshop. Personally this year I’m doing things a little differently. I’m taking a week off in early December to go and walk the Abel Tasman track with my partner, as we aim to complete our joint bucket list of doing all the ‘Great Walks” around New Zealand. Then over the Christmas/New Year period my plan (not on the bucket list but on the need to-do list) is some good old fashioned DIY around the house – painting, cleaning and tidying up. Have a safe and happy Christmas holiday. Best regards

supplier of ‘approved equipment’ to leading vehicle manufacturers in New Zealand and Australia. It is also behind the Ezigrip modular bike rack and component range for safely mounting cycles on the rear of vehicles. Additionally, Best Bars is a distributor of light truck cargo trays, cargo barriers, folding tonneau covers for ute decks and other vehicle accessory products. Mr Frear’s primary focus will be on directing the sales and marketing of the company’s products and building the profile of its brands. He will also oversee the introduction of a brand new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system that will help streamline and upgrade the management of the company’s customer interactions, supply lines, manufacturing, distribution and sales functions to prepare it for future growth. “Best Bars has been extraordinarily successful and I will be using my experience in

Stephen de Kriek, CEO of Best Bars, says the appointment of Mr Frear marks the next phase in the evolution of the company, which is looking to build on its success, not just in New Zealand but also in developing a bigger presence in similar markets around the world. “Best Bars supplies many new vehicle distributors in New Zealand with one or more of our products and this coupled with more than 40 percent of our sales to export ensure we are well positioned to make further gains both locally and overseas,” says Mr de Kriek. “John’s arrival is very much part of that overall plan. Southland-based Murrell began his term in November 2010, after having already served on the MTA board as a director since 2005.
It was both a great privilege and an honour to be again chosen to head an organisation like MTA. The industry has started to show positive signs of growth over the last six to nine months. With a challenging year behind us, I am looking forward to a more successful year ahead,” he says. No stranger to industry-related organisations, Rick Murrell brings a wealth of experience to the role after also serving on the Southland branch since 2003 and its MVDI equivalent from 1993 to 2005. EQUIPMENT NEWS
Beat the downturn with new equipment Now just may be the right time to think about investing in new capital equipment to make your business hum, instead of waiting until economic conditions improve, according to Stocks Equipment. “History shows that companies who invest in down times are the ones who will be ready to take advantage when things get better,” says Stocks Equipment general manager William Singleton. “There’s a great temptation for businesses to withdraw into their shells and go into survival mode, which is understandable in times like this. “But all they are doing is perpetuating the status quo, and possibly allowing a competitor to get the jump on them.” Mr Singleton says that during slower times, businesses should take a critical look at their operations and assess how their equipment and staff are performing. They may find that new equipment could increase through-put and also lower costs. “A prime example is our new range of Hunter wheel aligners,” says Mr Singleton. “Latest models, such as the Hawkeye Elite, can do a complete alignment check in less than 60 seconds. When you compare that to a machine that is around five years old, it’s much faster and so much easier to use, too.” Mr Singleton says savings on time and costs can be achieved with other equipment such as the new range of Corghi and White Knight tyre changers and wheel balancers, which are designed to perform faster and more
accurately than older generation machines. Workshops can take advantage of such increases in productivity to improve their bottom line and cover the additional costs of the purchase of new equipment. Mr Singleton says that workshops who put off a decision to upgrade their equipment might find that it comes back to bite them in other ways. Older equipment is less reliable and may start to cost them money for repairs and increased maintenance, in addition to lost work when it is out of commission. This even applies to hoists which wear out over time and require major overhauls or updating. The latest Americanmade Rotary and Revolution hoists, have a reputation of providing troublefree service year-in, year-out and the in-house service team at Stocks can develop a maintenance schedule that will ensure they continue to operate trouble-free. A major barrier facing many businesses who may want to upgrade is tighter loan restrictions from banks and other lending institutions.
Fortunately Stocks Equipment says it has a very good relationship with a leading financial institution and can arrange excellent finance deals with very attractive rates. Another advantage is that Stocks offers a one-stop shop with all major equipment covered and can include full installation, finance, maintenance and support in the repayment plan. They can even help with planning a
better layout of the equipment in the workshop to improve efficiencies and safety. Tyre Chopper eliminates the “per unit” casing disposal fee. The cost of casing disposal for tyre shops has now been reduced to how much material will fit into their three metre rubbish bin. Tyre Chopper was designed in New Zealand by a tyre shop owner who was frustrated with the growing cost of casing disposal. The Tyre Chopper machine is currently being manufactured in New Zealand and will be available for general sale by Christmas. The Tyre Chopper machine is a similar size to a tyre-fitting machine
which allows it to easily fit into any size of tyre shop. The operating procedure is very simple, first remove the sidewalls with the air saw and then chop the tread into pieces of any size that will fit into a waste bin. Industry feedback received during the development of Tyre Chopper indicates this machine will pay for itself inside nine months in operation in the average NZ tyre shop. This machine is long overdue. BRAKE NEWS
Breaking news in braking By Stuart French Robert Bosch Australia The automotive technology buffs spread throughout New Zealand workshops are no doubt beginning to notice a shift in the trend of vehicle safety systems. Whilst the number of airbags continues to grow and ESP software calibration undergoes continuous refinement, vehicle manufacturers are progressively shifting focus toward preventative safety systems. Driving the product development behind this emerging trend are Bosch’s chassis control engineers with a recently launched emergency braking system for low speeds. This new technology represents the enhancement of Bosch’s existing predictive emergency braking system, which is already used in numerous Volkswagen vehicles. Bosch’s new technology is designed to operate at speeds below 30 kph, when there is often minimal distance between vehicles-precisely the point at which many low-speed accidents occur. In fact, Allianz Insurance ‘Centre for Technology’ calculated that Bosch’s system could potentially prevent over 500,000 minor collisions annually, in Germany alone. Using Bosch’s LRR3 long-range radar sensor in the front of the vehicle, partnered with the ESP (Electronic Stability Programme), the distance between the cars travelling directly in front is calculated and consistently monitored. If this distance becomes too small, the brakes are primed ready for deployment-reducing the crucial milliseconds involved with pressure build-up-and then applied immediately when the set minimum distance is reached. The process is similar to left-foot pre-braking in a race car, whereby the braking system is ‘pumpedup’ by the driver tapping the pedal on the approach to critical brake markers. Effectively, Bosch’s new technology provides a level of driving skill traditionally reserved for advanced professionals, all before the average driver even knows they are in trouble. At higher speeds, the system still offers comprehensive support to the driver. There are visual and audible warnings and even a brief automated application of the brakes to alert the driver. This encourages them to
18
www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz
increase their distance from the vehicle immediately in front. In addition, if the driver does react, but their braking input is insufficient, the system will automatically maintain brake pressure until the LRR3 measures that the vehicle has retreated to an appropriately safe travelling distance. Debuting in the latest Audi A5 pictured here, Bosch’s new system is set to gradually make its way through the market and become commonplace in many vehicles on our roads and in your workshops. In the near future, the traditional brake service may focus on the testing and inspection of electrical systems, just as much as friction-based components.
Damage to disc brakes Every year Bosch produces 30 million brake discs these are produced after many months of R&D, engineering, testing and evaluation. So Bosch is well aware of the types of damage that can happen to brakes and how it came about. Often it is obvious what needs to be replaced or repaired in the brake system but it’s not always easy to know how it happened. Below are some of the most common problems that present themselves to workshops. Scoring or grooves on the friction surface. Cause:
• Exposure of brake disc and pad to dirt. Effect: • Brake noise. • Rubbing effect during braking. • Inadequate braking performance. Recommendation: • Always change the brake pads when changing a brake disc. Variable wear on the brake disc. Cause:
Effect:
• Irregular operation of the brake calliper. • Radial brake disc run-out. • Poor and or irregular braking performance.
• Vibration in the steering wheel. • Brake pedal pulsing on application. Recommendation: • Check brake caliper and wheel hub when Installing new brake discs. Blue discolouration on the face of the brake disc. Cause:
• Overheating due to jammed or seized brake pads. • Vehicle driven with activated or seized park brake. Effect: • Rubbing effect during braking. • Overheating. Recommendation: • Check the entire brake system and ensure that the brake caliper is functioning properly. Dents on the contact surface of the brake disc. Cause:
• Improper cleaning of the contact surface. • Damage to the contact surface through contamination. Effect: • Increased lateral run-out of the brake discs. • Chattering and rubbing. Recommendation: • Clean the contact surface of the brake disc and the wheel hub before mounting new brake discs. Do not use paste lubricants. Corroded friction area Cause:
• Impact of contact with wheel cleaning agents. • Corrosion or water damage. • Brakes not used enough or with not enough pressure. Effect: • Noise during braking. • Irregular braking performance. Recommendation: • Replace brake discs and pads. Instruct the customer to occasionally stress the brakes by applying pressure. REAdER REPly 121118

BRAKE NEWS
Measuring a brake pad According to Bendix two of the most common reasons to measure a disc pad are brake pad identification and checking brake pad wear. Bendix says pad identification is a crucial step in any brake job, particularly now when some vehicles can be fitted with several different brake options and vehicle owners have greater access to aftermarket brake upgrade kits. The brake fitter needs to confirm that the new pads are the same part as the old pads. Sometimes a visual inspection, or back-to-back comparison of the pads is enough to identify a difference, other times when the pad shape is the same a couple of simple measurements will verify the part. Pad wear checking is a most useful tool, not just to show when to change the pads, but to pick indicators of problems throughout the vehicle's braking system.
Measuring for pad identification The key features of a pad needed to identify it are shape, length, width and thickness. Bendix says its website and latest printed catalogue give the information required for positive pad identification. This example of a DB1152 for the Nissan 300ZX shows how to measure a pad that has additional accessories fitted.
The pad length is the total length of the backing plate and friction material not including any overhanging clips. In this example, Bendix says to measure from the left edge of the backing plate to the right edge of the backing plate not including the wear sensor. The pad width is the total width of the backing plate and friction material not including any overhanging clips. In this example the pad is measured from the bottom edge of the backing plate to the top edge of the backing plate not including the anti-rattle clip. On some pads the shim on the backing plate wraps around the ends of the pad increasing its effective length, shown here in red on image DB1295. In these cases the pad length is the total length of the backing plate including shim.
Bendix says its website and catalogue have a section that shows what the disc pad set consist of, including the measurements. Read the measurements as length x width x thickness. Note some sets have different size pads in them, in this case both pad sizes will be shown. The pad thickness is the total thickness from the flat surface of the backing plate to the flat surface of the friction material. This exaggerated example shows all the common features found on the backing plate surface and the friction material surface. This is a made-up example just for demonstration purposes, but thankfully Bendix says there are no real pads that are this complex. Remove any
20
www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz
clip-on shims before measurement, but where shims or gaskets are attached to the back of the backing plate include them in the thickness measurement.
Measuring pad wear During the braking process the friction material and brake rotor absorb large amounts of heat. The friction material also acts as an insulating barrier to slow the heat transfer to the brake caliper and other components. As the pads wear there is less friction material so more of the heat is transferred to other components. It is recommended that the brake pads be replaced when there is less than 3mm of friction material remaining. REAdER REPly 121110 Bendix says to note the position of each pad as you take them out of the brake caliper, also note any broken spring clips or shims that come out. Measure each pad at several positions along its length. In many cases the jaws of your measuring caliper can reach right across the width of the pad. Pads that wear unevenly can show a taper when measured. In extreme cases this can be seen during the measurement process. Check the variation in thickness along the length of the pad and across the width of the pad. There is normally a small taper along the length of the pad as the rotor tries to drag the pad in the direction it is turning. Some of the high performance multi-piston calipers now use different diameter pistons to try to counteract this affect. Differences in thickness in a single pad of more than 0.5mm can indicate a problem with the caliper, requiring a caliper service, recondition or replacement. Even if the pads have worn evenly with no taper they can still tell a story. The differences in thickness between pads can also indicate caliper problems. Some examples are: Outer pads worn more than inner pads in a single piston floating caliper can indicate the floating caliper is binding on its slides either through excessive wear or lack of lubrication, so after a brake application the piston retracts but the outer pad is still held in contact with the disc. To help prevent binding, always clean the caliper slides with Bendix brake cleaner, and lubricate with Bendix brake lubricant. Wear of both pads on one side of the vehicle could indicate the piston is unable to retract, possibly due to corrosion or a damaged rubber piston boot. If the piston is unable to retract, both the pads will be left contacting the disc after each brake application, causing rapid wear. The driver may experience the vehicle pulling to the damaged side for a while after the brakes are released. In extreme cases of piston binding the piston may not be able to move at all, causing the opposite wheel to do much more of the braking, wearing its pads prematurely and potentially causing the vehicle to pull to one side during braking. To help prevent corrosion, always bleed plenty of the old heat-affected brake fluid out during a brake job and top-up with Bendix brake fluid. REAdER REPly 121120

Will tyre pumps become obsolete? Pumping up under-inflated vehicle tyres at a service station could become a thing of the past thanks to a new innovation under development at Goodyear. Keeping tyres properly inflated doesn’t just eliminate the practice of checking a tyre’s air pressure and finding a tyre pump and gauge that works. It can also mean real savings at the fuel pump. Underinflated tyres result in between a 2.5 percent and 3.3 percent decrease in fuel mileage, according to US government and industry research. At today’s prices, that translates to about 4 cents per litre at the pump. Properly inflated tyres also result in lower emissions, longer tyre life, enhanced safety and improved vehicle performance. Goodyear’s air maintenance technology (AMT) will enable tyres to remain inflated at the optimum pressure without the need for any external pumps or electronics. All components of the AMT system, including the miniature pump, will be fully contained within the tyre. “While the technology is complex, the idea behind the AMT system is relatively simple and powered by the tyre itself as it rolls down the road,” said JeanClaude Kihn, Goodyear senior vice president and chief technical officer. “A tyre that can maintain its own inflation is something drivers have wanted for many years. Goodyear has taken on this challenge and the
progress we have made is very encouraging,” says Kihn. “This will become the kind of technological breakthrough that people will wonder how they ever lived without.” Goodyear did not provide an estimate as to when this technology would be available at tyre retailers, but said the timetable would be accelerated due to recent government research grants in United States and European Union. The United States Department of Energy’s Office of Vehicle Technology recently announced it has awarded a US$1.5 million grant for research, development and demonstration of the AMT system for commercial truck tyres. The grant will be administered by the National energy technology laboratory and work will be conducted at Goodyear’s Innovation Centre in Ohio. In July, Goodyear successfully applied for a grant from the Luxemburg government for research and development of an AMT system for consumer tyres. That work will be conducted at Goodyear’s innovation centre in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg. “While similar in concept, there are significant differences in AMT systems for consumer and commercial tyres,” says Kihn. “The tangible support from both the US and Luxembourg governments underscores the value of these projects and the many positive benefits they can provide drivers around the world.”
In addition, The DOE’s Office of Vehicle Technology today also announced that it will award a US$1.5 million grant for a joint project between PPG Industries and Goodyear to improve the rolling resistance and fuel efficiency of tyres. The project’s objective is to increase average fuel efficiency of passenger vehicle fleets through use of new tread and inner liner technologies. REAdER REPly 121121

HYBRID FEATURE
Hybrid battery knackered?
By Peter leijen BE (Hons) Researcher AECS R & d department
We’ve all seen them on the road-hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) such as the Toyota Prius, Honda Insight, and now full electric vehicles (EV) such as the Nissan Leaf or the Mitsubishi I-Miev. The majority of the public is sceptical about purchasing a new or second hand EV or HEV because of the stories circulating regarding HV battery-related problems and the expenses incurred when fixing such issues. For my university honours research project I investigated and tested a range of Prius, Estima and Camry NiMH battery packs with differing histories, km’s driven, idle time in storage and fire damage. A basic analogy is to compare a battery with an oil drum. Just like batteries, oil drums come in a range of different sizes, 1L, 4L, 20L etc. For a battery, the size is quoted as a milliamp hour (mAh) figure. The capacity can range from 1200mAh which describes an ordinary AA battery up to 90000mAh which describes a high-capacity EV battery. Now imagine that over time (battery cycle life) the size of the oil drum (capacity of the battery) reduces. This is known as a reduction in battery state of health. It is also possible that the oil drums (batteries) can be filled to different levels. State of charge is the measure of how ‘full’ the battery is. Just as oil drums can be filled with various different types of oil, batteries also contain different chemical species. The most commonly known will be lead acid. The battery packs used in HEV’s (e.g. Prius) between 1998 and 2010 contain Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH).
C Toyota Prius System The battery pack of the NHW11 Toyota Prius consists of 38 Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery blades, each of which contain six NiMH cells in series. The battery blade is the smallest replaceable unit within the battery pack. The battery management system of the Prius takes a differential voltage measurement across each pair of blades. The current into the pack is measured, and four temperature measurements are performed throughout the whole pack by the battery management ECU. If any of these measured values fall outside of the working parameters then a fault code is logged. The most common fault codes that the AECS help desk has had to deal with are ‘leak detected’ and ‘battery levels significantly different’.
A
Now that the battery is explained in a simple manner it is best to look at the Toyota Prius battery management system, the sensors involved and the diagnostic information gathered by the ECU.
B

Figure 1: Diagram of a typical Battery Management System for HEVs, for example the 2009 Toyota Prius. The leak detected fault code is logged when the ECU measures a HV (High Voltage) path to the chassis of the vehicle. To explain this in detail requires a separate article so I will leave it for now. The ‘battery levels significantly different’ fault code is more interesting as this is the code that prompts the technician to, after exhausting all other repair paths, replace the battery pack at a cost of thousands of dollars. Earlier on in this article I introduced the oil drum analogy and how the drums and batteries can be different sizes and be filled to different levels. So what does the ‘battery levels significantly different’ fault code actually mean?
Capacity (State of Health = SOH) Distribution The 38 individual battery blades in a battery pack can all be in a different state of health. I tested many battery packs at the Science and Engineering Department of the University of Waikato and have summarised the most interesting four battery packs on the following page.
22
www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz
HYBRID FEATURE trace is the overall voltage of the battery pack, the purple trace is the current through the battery pack and the other traces are of individual battery blades. The blue trace is of interest as it is the voltage of the battery blade which contains the broken cell. The voltage swing of this battery blade is from 3.8V to 10.6V! I must also advise that the vehicle with this battery blade configuration was able to drive only 10 metres in EV mode compared with 2.5 km for the original battery pack. As you can imagine, this triggered fault codes. The vehicle presented with both ‘battery levels significantly different’ and ‘battery block 19 is becoming weak’ fault codes. This trace shows in an extreme case how the weakest battery blade sacrifices itself, that is, it undergoes the most charging and discharging. As a direct result its state of health will deteriorate more, amplifying the problem. So now we’ve recreated the problem. The ‘battery levels significantly different’ fault code is triggered by the differences between the battery blade voltages progression but the battery management ECU accepts that the vehicle has a reduction in fuel economy of 50 percent caused by variations in the state of health of the battery blades. Figure 4: Capacity Distribution throughout four packs tested. The graph shows the capacity distribution of the battery blades throughout four battery packs. It is safe to assume that the battery distributions are matched in the factory as will become apparent later on. The green trace shows the capacity distribution from a battery pack which had done 69,649 km, approximately a third of its quoted lifetime. The bathtub-shaped curve is caused by temperature variations throughout the battery pack during normal operation. I measured the centre of the battery pack to be up to 17 degrees Celsius warmer than the battery blades on the sides of the battery pack during a drive cycle. This particular battery pack was tested in our test vehicle and performed as well as the original battery pack which had done over 100,000 km. Therefore it can be assumed that this battery is of good state of health. The performance was measured by driving the vehicle in EV mode (less than 25km/h) and recording the distance travelled before the ICE (engine) switched on to charge the battery pack. All tests were started at a fixed state of charge (60 percent) to ensure accurate results. No fault codes were triggered with this battery pack indicating that the battery management ECU accepts a spread of 500mAh across the battery pack. A 1200mAh battery blade was swapped into the battery pack to further investigate this spread. Again no fault codes were triggered. However, the performance in EV mode of the vehicle had halved! Now we can start piecing it together. The battery pack is only as efficient as the battery blade with the lowest state of health (capacity of the oil drum). Hence, the assumption can be made that the vehicle manufacturer matches and balances all battery blades in the battery pack. Now lets look at the graph again at, the blue and the black traces in particular. The black trace indicates that 30 percent of the battery blades in a battery pack that is destined for destruction are still in an excellent state of health. The blue trace indicates that only a few battery blades have a significantly different state of health which severely affects the performance of the vehicle.
A concern for the workshop? Today there are thousands of hybrid vehicles on the road and their presence will only increase, which means that they will come into your workshop. What do you do with the batteries on these cars? Do you wait until the battery fails and then replace it? That would be like never checking or replacing oil in an engine and waiting until the oil light comes on! Battery failure will be preceded by a period of gradually increasing fuel consumption, for which most workshops have no answer. At AECS we are currently developing the tools required to quickly and accurately measure and equalise the battery blades as well as set parameters for each blade and pinpoint which battery blade is causing the poor fuel economy. We are also working on a tool to easily identify new or second-hand replacement battery blades. The tool will also be adaptable for Lead acid and Li-ion batteries. REAdER REPly 121123

Kia goes all electric Kia Motors is soon to introduce an allelectric city car, along with a range of other technologies to make its cars go further on various fuel sources. Full technical details on Kia’s new EV (Electric Vehicle) have yet to be revealed, other than to confirm it will be a ‘box-style’ small vehicle in the light CUV segment and it is expected to use an advanced LiPoly (Lithiumion Polymer) battery to power the electric motor. Officials says it will be able to travel an impressive 160 kilometres on a single charge and deliver a maximum speed of 130km/h. The Korean carmaker initially plans to produce 2,000 of its small EV cars
in 2012 for use in its domestic market over the next year. Commentators say the Kia Naimo concept, revealed at the Seoul Motor Show earlier this year, could offer a hint for the new EV’s styling. Kia has also confirmed it will introduce a second EV in 2014 in the form of a Soul-sized small car. By 2015, Kia Motors will also unveil its first production fuel cell electric vehicle, using next-generation hydrogen fuel cell technology to power electric motors. The fuel cell electric vehicle is expected to provide a range of more than 560 kilometres and its only emissions will be water vapour. Kia’s Naimo concept.

MAgAzINE FOR THE Nz HEAvY DIESEL INDUSTRY
Fuso Super Great HEV concept truck
Fuso develops heavy-duty hybrid Daimler Truck group member Mitsubishi Fuso has introduced a heavy-duty hybrid truck in Japan. The new Fuso Super Great HEV concept truck was unveiled at the recent Tokyo Motor Show. Fuso says that the first tests of the Super Great HEV have demonstrated significant fuel efficiency improvements over conventional diesel-only vehicles. The hybrid heavy-duty truck is a milestone in the development efforts of the global hybrid centre (GHC) located in Kawasaki, Japan. The centre controls Daimler Trucks’ global hybrid activities. “We want to be leaders in green technologies,” says Fuso CEO Dr Albert Kirchmann. “Our development of a long-haul hybrid truck represents a expansion of our hybrid activities and shows our focus on bringing cost-effective, low-emission commercial vehicles for many applications. We will continue to promote advanced technologies to reduce emissions and increase fuel efficiency.”
Heavy-duty hybrid setup The newly developed hybrid heavy-duty truck is based on the technology of the Canter Eco Hybrid, around 1200 units of which have been sold since it
was introduced in 2006 and which has proved itself in numerous applications worldwide. The Fuso Super Great HEV features a conventional diesel engine, electric motor/generator, lithium(Li)-ion battery and related control software. It utilises a parallel hybrid system. This means the vehicle's driving power comes from the vehicle’s electric motor, the diesel engine or both. Fuel efficiency and emissions reduction are achieved by using them singly or in combination with each other according to driving conditions. When slowing down or braking, the electric motor functions as a generator to provide braking. The
generator converts brake energy into electric energy and returns it to the lithium-ion battery. The first tests performed under reallife conditions show an increase in fuel efficiency by as much as ten percent versus conventional diesel-only powered vehicles. Testing was conducted on motorways in Japan. “Evaluation so far shows that hybridisation can certainly benefit heavy-duty trucks in typical long-haul operations,” says Fuso vice president of product engineering Gustav Tuschen. “The conventional thinking is that hybrids best fit trucks like the Canter Eco Hybrid
involved in short-radius distribution operations, since this involves many stop-and-go situations. Braking energy can be continuously recaptured this way. But heavy-duty highway trucks in longhaul operation clearly benefit as well.” Long-haul trucks recover and store energy as they move up and down hills. They also tend to run much longer distances than light commercials so the benefits of hybridisation accumulates. The hybrid system of the Fuso Super Great is optimised so it can capture energy even when the truck is going down very slight grades. The parallel hybrid system ensures that energy loss is minimised. Fuso is now moving ahead with development of heavy-duty hybrid trucks. One focus has been to minimise the weight of the hybrid system so the customer has the highest possible payload at their disposal. The key challenge now is to ensure significant overall lifecycle cost benefits for the Super Great HEV. Daimler says that capitally-intensive heavy trucks will prevail in the market when their purchase pays off for entrepreneurs. REAdER REPly 121127

DIESEL INDUSTRY NEWS
From peanut oil to methane gas The fuels powering the diesel engine have undergone considerable development during its 119 year long history according to Volvo Trucks. Volvo Trucks says the fossil fuel referred to as diesel is beginning to make way for alternatives with a smaller environmental footprint, such as biogas and DME. According to Volvo Trucks, diesel has received more than its fair share of criticism from an environmental perspective. Originally the term had nothing to do with any type of fuel but instead only described a particular type of engine. It is an often overlooked fact that Rudolf Diesel, the inventor of the diesel engine, ran his first engines on peanut oil. Volvo Trucks says the diesel engine can be run on many different fuels, some of which are renewable. The common factor is that they are ignited via compression instead of via the spark provided by a spark plug. The reason why diesel oil has become synonymous with the diesel engine is that, over the years, it has been the most common fuel used. However, as society’s demands increase and technology makes significant advances, so too are more and more alternative fuels being developed for use in the diesel engine. “It’s important for us to work with a wide range of alternative fuels and to come up with solutions that reduce our impact on the climate. It is already possible to build efficient diesel engines that run on renewable fuels,” says Volvo Trucks environmental director Lars Mårtensson. “This can be shown in our new Volvo FM MethaneDiesel and the bioDME-powered trucks which we are now field testing. This fuel has the potential for cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 95 percent,” he says.
One engine, many fuels Volvo Technology fuel expert Anders Röj says that
lng tank on a fm series volvo truck
diesel fuel can be made from any organic material just as long as it has flammable properties that make it suitable for the diesel process. “However, some fuels require major or minor modifications of the engine and its peripheral equipment. And, unfortunately, the engine does not always function equally well on all fuels,” he says. “Biodiesel exhibits poorer stability and coldweather properties than hydrocarbon-based diesel fuels. When mixed in small quantities with diesel oil, however, biodiesel functions well if its quality is acceptable in other respects.”
Fossil diesel fuel and its alternatives Traditionally diesel is a petroleum product consisting of hydrocarbons. To produce diesel fuel, crude oil is first distilled and then refined. In this process the petroleum is filtered and purified to meet the legislative requirements and diesel standard of the particular country in which the fuel is to be sold.
Biodiesel samples in the volvo lab
The EU, for instance, has both a directive and a CEN standard – an abbreviation that stands for European Committee for Standardisation – to regulate quality requirements for diesel fuel. The USA on the other hand generally adopts the ASTM International standard. Furthermore, many countries also have their own national standards. According to Anders Röj, fossil diesel fuel offers the best energy efficiency from initial oil extraction to combustion in the engine, known as the “welltowheel” perspective. “Nature has done an excellent preliminary job with its crude oil deep down in the bowels of the earth over millions of years. And in the almost 100 years that oil refineries have been around, the technology has also undergone significant development,” he says.
Biodiesel FAME, Fatty Acid Methyl Esters, is the collective name for what we refer to as biodiesel. FAME can be produced from a number of different vegetable or animal oils, such as rapeseed oil (RME), soya oil (SME) and palm oil (PME). It is even possible to run a diesel engine on fuel obtained from used cooking oil or tallow, depending on where in the world the biodiesel is produced. The advantage of FAME fuels is that they give 50-60 percent lower CO2 emissions from “well to wheel” compared with conventional diesel, and are free from sulphur and aromatics. The fuels’ downsides are that they contribute to increased emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx). Within the EU, it is no longer permitted for diesel fuel to contain more than seven percent FAME since, with a higher proportion, NOx emissions will be too high.
28
www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz
DIESEL INDUSTRY NEWS “Had FAME not been a bio-component we would probably be very negative about such fuels due to the NOx emissions and quality problems. Now, however, there is political pressure to use renewable fuels, and biodiesel is one of the few biofuels currently available on a commercial scale,” says Anders Röj.
Synthetic diesel Diesel oil can also be produced synthetically through gasification of fuels such as black coal and natural gas, creating a fuel that contains a smaller proportion of aromatic hydrocarbons. There is at present no significant production of synthetic diesel, however, research is currently being conducted into energy-efficient gasification of biomass. If this project is successful, synthetic diesel may become a particularly viable fuel in the future. “Emissions of NOx and particulates from synthetic diesel are lower than from fossil diesel oil. However, the energy content per litre of fuel is somewhat lower,” says Anders Röj.
DME (Dimethyl ether) One of the synthetic diesel fuels being examined is ether known as DME, a carbon/hydrogen/oxygen molecular bond. At present DME is produced from natural gas, but Swedish company Chemrec is running a pilot plant for the production of BioDME where the raw material being used is black liquor, a high-energy by-product of paper manufacture. It gives 95 percent lower carbon dioxide emissions than diesel fuel and zero emissions of soot. BioDME can also be produced from other biomass sources.
a carbon neutral volvo fh truck
“As a diesel fuel, BioDME gives the highest energy output per unit of raw material. It offers five times the driving range per unit of cultivated arable land than biodiesel,” says Anders Röj. Consequently, BioDME is one of the fuels that Volvo Trucks is focusing on for the future. The company is currently engaged in field tests in Sweden with trucks running on DME.
Methane gas Natural gas or biogas can be used as vehicle fuel in both compressed and liquid form. It does not ignite
like diesel fuel but if fossil or biodiesel is used to assist in the combustion process, it works well. In May 2011 Volvo Trucks launched its new Volvo FM MethaneDiesel, a gas-powered truck designed for regional distribution. It is powered by up to 75 percent liquefied methane gas with the remainder consisting of diesel oil, with the diesel serving as the abovementioned “spark plug”. With biogas in the fuel tank, CO2 emissions drop by up to 70 percent compared with a conventional diesel engine. With fossil-based gas, emissions are cut by 10 percent. REAdER REPly 121129

NZ Bus vehicles waiting for service
NZ Bus gets a lift For many years NZ Bus has serviced its fleet of passenger buses in its own workshops in metropolitan and regional areas around the country. The focus of the workshops has been to provide reliable transport to NZ Bus customers who rely upon the fleet to get from home to work, to school, and back to home again. The company says that in order to cope with tighter timetables and to increase its reliability, as well as recognising its economic feasibility and environmental responsibility, it has moved one workshop from Mount Roskill, Auckland, to new premises in Neilson Street, Onehunga. NZ Bus examined its need for workshop space and equipment that allowed faster throughput and speed of bus inspections, but also offered a workerfriendly hazard-free environment with a clear floor space. It was decided that a mixture of platform hoists and mobile column lifts provided the best solution. After going to the marketplace to find a reliable and cost-effective solution to meet its requirements for Onehunga and other workshop facilities in Auckland, Whangarei and Wellington, NZ Bus awarded the supply contract to Heavylift which began in October. Heavylift supplied the Onehunga workshop with three KAR 250 9-metre 25 tonne semi-scissor lifts from Italian manufacturer OMER and three sets of German-manufactured Finkbeiner wireless column lifts. Heavylift says the scissor hoists allow variable work height both underneath and outside of the heavy vehicles. The lesser known advantage of a waist-high work level ensures that workers don’t have to crouch down or kneel on concrete floors to service wheels, brakes and steering systems. Folding approach ramps unique to Heavylift were supplied as a special option to NZ Bus. These were deemed necessary to provide a hazard-free zone under the rear of the buses where 90 percent of the maintenance work is carried out. Heavylift says the folding approach ramps are lightweight enough to easily fold out of the way when not required and it says are a better solution than
A Finkbeiner column close up
fixed floor ramps which have been deemed a safety hazard by industry safety experts. Heavylift says the wireless Finkbeiner column lifts also provide a huge advantage for worker safety. The Finkbeiner include many safety features as standard such as the two integrally safe locking systems, the IP65 electrical rating, the adjustable forks for all wheel-sizes, the enclosed hydraulic ram shafts and the two microprocessors controlling each column. All columns come complete with a set of controls. According to Heavylift the Finkbeiner lifts have been well received by large heavy commercial workshops such as NZ Bus across the country. For the Onehunga installation, Heavylift says it contracted Avondale-based Advanced Hoist Services, who, in Heavylift's opinion, completed the job in a most professional manner by November 1st enabling NZ Bus to officially open the workshop on time and on budget. Guinness world record for Hammar Underlining the strength and power of Hammar sideloaders, the Swedish company has set a Guinness World Record for lifting a container weighing 60 tonnes. The lift was made using a standard model sideloader Hammar 157H, which uses the same crane as the 151HS and 155HS ‘Mega Transfer’ models sold in the New Zealand market, and the record has now been ratified with a certificate and entry into the Guinness Book of World Records. Hammar says the attempt was performed without drama, with the 157H sideloader “performing exactly as designed in a matter of seconds and without protesting” as it lifted a container as much as 67 percent heavier than it is supposed to. The standard lifting capacity (SWL) on the 150 series which includes 157, 151 and 155, is 36 tonnes, though it can be specified with up to 42 tonnes lifting capacity. Hammar tests the cranes with a 25 percent overload as per the requirements for EU certifications. The prime mover was parked on a container flat rack so that it did not make imprints in the tarmac. The record was set in front of local media and all the Hammar staff at the Olsfors factory in southern Sweden. Managing director of Hammar New Zealand, Fred Sandberg who was among those to witness the feat,

says the record attempt was made to illustrate just how strong and stable the company’s sideloaders are. “It was a fun thing to do, with a serious message behind it,” he says. “We wanted to show what our standard sideloaders are really capable of, but, in truth, it is academic, because road conditions and shipping companies would never allow such weight to be carried by container. MTA recognises collision repairer insurers Three New Zealand insurers were recognised at a gala awards dinner during Motor Trade Association’s (MTA) annual conference held in Rotorua in November. Vero and AMP general insurance 2011 were awarded the MTA/CRA highly commended general insurer, with AMI taking out the award for best general insurer. MAS were awarded the best niche market insurer 2011. Collision repair association (CRA) vice chairman Richard Gilmore and MTA president Richard Murrell presented the awards to the recipients on the night. MTA advocacy and training general manager Dougal Morrison congratulated the winners in each of the categories for their success and high-quality work practices. “The survey is a useful tool which not only helps to lift service standards of both insurers and collision repairers but it also helps to strengthen relationships between these two groups,” he says. Over 250 collision repairers were surveyed by MTA and the CRA looking at the service delivery of 16 insurance companies, ranking each insurer in three key areas: efficiency of claims processing, financial and customer relationship management. Vero and AMP repairer network and supply manager Paul Dorset says that receiving this recognition is important. “We work hard on our business model to ensure we have efficient processes in place to provide excellent service for both repairers and customers,” he says. Above all, it’s important to us to be easy to deal with and to have a fair, transparent and equitable relationship with suppliers, intermediaries and the collision repair industry.” “We are very pleased to be recognised,” says acting national manager AMI motor assessing Paul Clemoes. “It’s great for MTA and CRA to instigate this type of survey as the feedback we receive is invaluable.” AMI say its customer care ethos is at the heart of everything it does. And that is supported by the AMI promise – to care, assist, and deliver – and this is practiced by all staff. MAS claims manager Mark Fisher says that MAS looks at the automotive repair sector as one of the most essential aspects of their claim process. “As a relatively small insurer we rely on MTA and the CRA to ensure that the standards that our members expect are delivered,” he says. It therefore gives us great pleasure to accept this award as it provides me with confidence that we are delivering consistently to these repairers. “All of the team at MAS were really over the moon on receiving the award from such esteemed organisations. It underlines the importance we place on service delivery within the organisation and the acknowledgement by the repairers is greatly appreciated,” says Fisher. REAdER REPly 121132

World’s most popular car colours White and white pearl has emerged as the fastest-growing colour to tie with silver as the world’s leading automotive colour choices, according to the 2011 DuPont automotive colour popularity report. A substantial increase in the popularity of white and white pearl globally in 2011 has enabled it to pass rivals black and gray to join silver at the top of the world colour ranks in this year’s report. Now in its 59th year the DuPont report includes automotive colour popularity rankings and regional trends from 11 automotive regions. In 2010, white/white pearl was tied for third with grey in the world colour ranking with just 16 percent share, but its ongoing popularity in North America, combined with a surge in popularity in Europe, China, Korea, South America and South Africa, has helped to increase its position in 2011 to 22 percent globally. Black and grey dropped to third and fourth respectively in this year’s report with red and blue strengthening and holding positions in fifth and sixth place. The top global vehicle colours in DuPont’s report are as follows: 1. White/White Pearl and Silver – tie, 22 percent 3. Black/Black Effect – 20 percent 4. Grey – 13 percent 5. Red – 7 percent 6. Blue – 6 percent 7. Brown/Beige – 5 percent 8. Green – 2 percent 9. Yellow/Gold – 1 percent 10. Others – 2 percent “While white and white pearl has historically been a popular colour for vehicles, we’ve seen a bigger shift in its popularity this year than DuPont expected,” says DuPont colour marketing manager Nancy Lockhart. Silver and black have long been recognised in the top three for colour popularity. However, in the past few years, white/white pearl has been steadily growing in popularity outside of North America. “There has been increased consumer acceptance for white, and our OEM customers are meeting consumer demand for the clean look it brings to vehicle design,” she says. “Silver and black were once the top colours of luxury, but white has increased in this area. The overall trend for casual luxury has spread to numerous vehicle types.” Silver topped the Asia Pacific region overall with more than 25 percent share in the region and repeated its No. 1 position again this year in China and South Korea. White and white pearl
was second overall in the Asia Pacific region, with slightly less than 25 percent of the market, led by Japan and India, where it ranked as the No. 1 colour in those countries. In China, silver topped the market with 26 percent share, though it fell seven percentage points from 2010. Black and black effect was No. 2 in China again this year, but dropped more than nine percentage points, as blue has increased in the small car segment and other colours are more widely used for vehicles in China. The decrease in black is evident as blue shows increased usage in the small car segment and other colours are more widely used. Japan’s colour popularity was led in this year’s report by white and white pearl, with 26 percent share, down from 28 percent in 2010. Black and black effect also saw a decrease to 20 percent share, but it overtook the No. 2 spot from silver, which ranked No. 3 in this year’s report with 19 percent. Blue (nine percent) and gray (nine percent) completed the top five in Japan, with gray increasing four percent over last year. “In the Asia Pacific region, we are seeing colour trends shift to nature and the environment with the colour blue,” says DuPont Asia Pacific colour marketing manager Kumiko Ohmura. “We’ve seen a decrease in black, as blue increased in the small car segment and other
colours are more widely used in all segments,” she says. In South Korea, silver represented nearly 30 percent of the market in 2011, followed by white and white pearl at 25 percent. Black and black effect slipped to third position in South Korea with 15 percent, down nine percentage points from 2010. In India, light shades continue to top the charts with white representing 28 percent of the market, silver following
closely with 27 percent, and gray in third position in the country with just 9 percent share. South Africa had the world’s highest market share of white or white pearl of any region or country analysed by DuPont in this year’s report, with those vehicles representing 40 percent share. Silver followed, with nearly 22 percent market share, and black or black effect rounded out the top three with nearly 12 percent share. REAdER REPly 121133

Fogg leads Bargwanna photo: Sportpromedia
Bernard Carpinter reports on a rather wet and messy first round of racing at Pukekohe. NZV8 pictures courtesy SportsProMedia. The fine line between speed and disaster was all too graphically illustrated at Pukekohe’s opening round of the 2011-12 BNT New Zealand V8s championship. Angus Fogg was driving very well as he led race two in wet, difficult conditions. But then as his Falcon came through the left-hander by the pit entrance, before the hill onto the front straight, it completely lost its grip on the track surface. The car charged straight ahead, bounced off the wall on the right, slid across the track and hit the other wall, hard. Australian V8 Supercar driver Jason Bargwanna ended up in the wall nearby – crunched by Michael Bristow’s car – and Tim Edgell slowed to avoid this carnage but then went off at the next corner, coming over the hill. These four cars were extensively damaged, though all but Bristow’s Commodore managed to get out for the final race after great work by the pit crews. A few other cars were damaged as well. With bent and broken cars strewn across the track, officials waved the red flag to signal an early finish to the race. Victory went to canny local man Paul Manuell, who had turned into the pits on the warm-up lap to change from slick to wet-weather tyres because he thought the weather was getting worse. He started

Swift leader Mark Gibson
after the rest of the field but as the rain intensified his extra grip enabled him to carve through the field and he hit the front just before the red flag came out. “We don’t grow potatoes in Pukekohe for nothing – it’s always going to rain,” says Manuell. “I preferred to take the safety angle.” Under the rules, the rest of the placings were taken from the end of the previous lap so those who had crashed out still gained good results. Fogg says he was sore after his double impact with the walls. “The previous lap it was fine but this time it was much more slippery. The car understeered (ploughed ahead) big-time and ricocheted off the wall.” Fogg and other leading drivers including Bargwanna say officials should have stopped the race as the rain
intensified and the track became more slippery, with most of the cars on slick tyres. “I was telling my guys on the radio that the race should be stopped,” says Bargwanna. Bargwanna was the unluckiest of the crashers. As he spun he showed great control to end up just touching the left-hand wall, so lightly that the only damage was a cracked tail-light and a little scratched paint. But then Bristow followed almost the same trajectory as Fogg and slammed hard into Bargwanna’s helpless Falcon. The Fujitsu 200 meeting started with 16 NZ V8s, the field depleted by the recession and by the departure of some leading drivers who are switching to the new V8 SuperTourers. Edgell – whose father Randell is
one of New Zealand’s top engine-builders – qualified his Falcon fastest and then won the top-10 shootout ahead of Manuell, Fogg and Bargwanna. “We have a very good engine and our preparation has gone very well,” says Tim Edgell. “We haven’t touched the car all day.” Aucklander Alan McCarrison was “over the moon” to come fifth in the shootout, his best performance in the category. The rest of the top 10 comprised Ford drivers Martin Short, Simon Richards, John Penny and Haydn Mackenzie, plus Bristow – a fast young driver returning to the category after a break and now driving the quick Commodore raced last season by Andy Booth. Race one saw Edgell lead away from his pole position and gradually increase the gap to claim a comfortable victory. Fogg passed Manuell to grab second, and Bargwanna came in fourth. Former motocross racer Penny advanced to fifth ahead of Short, Richards, Mackenzie, Bargwanna’s team-mate Simon Evans (Ford) and Bristow. Race two started with the top 10 finishers from race one in reverse order on the grid, but it did not take long for the top drivers to come through to the front – when they were the first to encounter the suddenly extra-slippery corner. Official results placed Manuell first, followed by Fogg, Bargwanna, Edgell, Short, Bristow, Evans, Richards, Penny and Nick Ross (Holden). The long final race started with a normal grid again but included an extra twist – under new rules for this season, each car has to stop in the pits to have a wheel changed (the crew can replace the wheel, or just put the same one back on). In the event the pit stops went reasonably smoothly, but during the season they could play a vital part in determining the results of the races. A second gained in the pits by a slick crew could enable the team’s driver to gain two or three positions on the track, while a dropped nut could lead to disaster. The wheels are held on by five nuts and with only basic equipment – no Formula One gizmos here – it takes more than 16 seconds to get the wheel off and on again. Fogg took the lead for the final race but Bargwanna nipped inside him at Railway corner and carried on to a convincing victory. Fogg took his third second placing of the meeting, which gave him the overall round victory. Manuell’s third placing earned him second overall. Richards took fourth in the race ahead of Ross, Mackenzie, Penny, Dwayne Carter (Ford), McCarrison and Evans. Edgell’s battered car was behaving strangely and went off the track twice before Edgell parked it for the day.

Utes winner Andrew Waite
Support classes There are no Porsche GT3s this season, the Toyota Racing Series starts in January, and the Formula Fords were also absent from Pukekohe. That left the UDC V8 Utes – now an official New Zealand championship – as the top support category. The two leading Ute drivers of recent seasons, Chris Pither and Caine Lobb, have moved on and indeed Pither is doing extremely well in the Australian Ute series. However a new star emerged in the shape of Andrew Waite, known as a fast driver in the Toyota Racing Series. Waite qualified his Falcon fastest (points are awarded for qualifying in Utes), won the marble draw to give himself pole position for the first race, and led it all the way. The marble draw system meant that he started race two at the back of the grid,

but he came through to fourth while Chris Hanley won for Holden. Race three, with a conventional start, saw Hanley beat Waite for the win but Waite had scored the most points over the weekend. Third overall was Geoff Spencer (Holden), followed by Peter Ward (Holden) and Steve Taylor (Ford). In the Suzuki Sport Cup, in which all drivers race identical Suzuki Swifts, Mark Gibson distinguished himself by winning all three races – including the reverse-grid heat where he started right at the back and passed the whole field. AJ Lauder was second overall and Shaun Lawrence – son of former Tasman Cup champion Graeme Lawrence – third.
Logan Childs’s fast Mitsubishi Lancer Evo carried him to victory in the Production GT class, ahead of Kevin Varney (Subaru Impreza WRX) and Maurice Shapley (Holden Monaro). The summer series now includes a new class called Sports GT, for fast almost-anything-goes cars like those in the IRC’s GT1-GT2 category. Unfortunately only two really fast cars turned up, Nick Chester’s mighty V8 Supercar-plus Commodore and Cameron Jones’s Camaro with a triple-rotor Mazda engine developing up to 900hp. Chester won all three races and Jones was forced out of the meeting during race two because the car was deemed too noisy.

Festival celebrates BMW Motorsport New Zealand’s motorsport history will be celebrated at the 2012 Festival of Motor Racing at Hampton Downs on January 20-22 and 27-29. The theme of the festival in 2012 focuses heavily around BMW’s local and international motorsport history. Visitors to the festival will see cars spanning decades of motor racing history take to the Hampton Downs circuit, including many from the formative years of the sport in New Zealand. The event will attract plenty of names from the past and present of motor racing, offering a rare chance to see world-famous names driving a wide range of cars. There will be some legendary names from BMW motorsport and New Zealand motorsport in attendance. Kiwi legend Chris Amon will be on hand to mark his links to the German brand, while touring car legend Jim Richards is down to race, as are other BMW racers of the time. Additionally, drivers from the UK, USA, Canada, Monaco and Australia will again make the trip with their Formula 5000 machinery as they attempt to beat Kiwi racing icon Kenny Smith. Visitors can expect to see a number of former
BMW Motorsport drivers at the Festival. These drivers drove in the Nissan Mobil 500 at Wellington and Pukekohe in the 1980s and 1990s. Many also featured in the Benson and Hedges series and ANZ Touring car series in the 1980s, and the NZ Touring Car series of the 1980s and 1990s. Names so far include: Rodger Anderson, Paul Fahey, Steve Millen, Neville Crichton, Wayne Wilkinson, Kent Baigent, Neil Lowe, Graeme Crosby, Jim Richards, Tony Lawrence, Phil Myhre (Brunei), Jim Keogh (Australia), Ludwig Finauer (Australia), Ed Lamont, Graeme Cameron, Paul Radisich, John Sax, Brett Riley, Craig Baird, Keith Sharp and Bernie Gillon. Static BMW displays will also be a feature of the event – with the BMW CSL ‘Batmobile’ taking the centre stage. An ex-works car once piloted by the likes of Amon and Hans Stuck and still owned by the BMW factory. It is just one of many valuable cars that members of the public will be able to get up close and personal with in an age where they and the drivers are normally tucked behind a security fence. BMW NZ will also bring from the BMW Museum in Germany an E30 DTM and a race version of the very rare BMW M1 ‘ProCar’.

World’s fastest SUV safety car? The BMW X6M safety car pictured here will be seen on the roads around New Zealand over the next few weeks promoting the event before being used in an official capacity at the Festival in January 2012. At the heart of this white beast lies a twin turbo-charged V8, generating 408kW of power and 680Nm of torque, propelling the vehicle from standstill to 100kph in just 4.7 seconds. Without a doubt, it’s possibly

one of the world’s fastest SUV-type safety cars in operation on motorsport circuits. Motor Equipment News spent a week with this all-wheel-drive wunderkind and came away impressed with its luxury appointments as well as the prodigious performance and grip on the road. We have no doubt that it will be up to the task of managing safety at the Hampton downs circuit.

Living the dream Stephen Barker is living every young racer’s dream job-a year working in the heart of a factory rally team at the forefront of the World Rally Championship. Takapuna-born Barker is nearing the end of a 12-month stint at the M-Sport operation in Cumbria in the United Kingdom. Run by Brit Malcolm Wilson – himself an accomplished rally man of years past – the company is Ford’s official representative in the World Rally Championship, responsible for running the Fiesta WRC cars of Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala and a raft of semi-works and customer cars at world rally championship level. Stephen Barker admits there are mornings when he can’t quite believe his luck. A rally fan since the age of 12 when he was first taken for a ride by family friend Ian Attwood, he has rallied in the Extreme series here in New Zealand – becoming the first to run a Ford Focus in rallying in this country – and even helped the Ford WRC team when it came to New Zealand for the local round of the world championship. In 2009, he won the Rally New Zealand Rising Stars shootout, scoring a funded season in a Fiesta ST the following year and winning the class. He was the first two-wheel-drive competitor home in the 2010 event. Along with his first national title came a chance to compete in the international Fiesta competition in Cumbria, a contest he says was quite similar to the New
Zealand one “except here the judges were Malcolm Wilson and current WRC drivers Mikko Hirvonen and Matthew Wilson!” Victory in the shootout brought his current reward, and in February 2011 he moved to Cumbria to work with M-Sport for a full year in a paid role that has taken him to all the European rounds of the WRC working with guests of the team. Many of these are VIPs from the team’s current and past sponsors, including Castrol and BP. Stephen was there when the M-Sport team celebrated an historic 1-2-3 result at this year’s Wales Rally GB, with Jari-Matti Latvala in the factory Castrol-backed car leading home the M-Sport customer cars of Mads Østberg and Henning Solberg. He also won a test in the M-Sport-developed Ford Fiesta S2000 championship rally car with tuition from Matthew Wilson, an experience he described as “amazing”. His work there has included helping to build 24 WRC cars for the team, running rally stage tours for VIPs and helping to host guests at the WRC service parks. He has also been picked to help with driving duties at the company’s hosted drive days, using Ford’s Fiesta R2 and helping to develop the new Fiesta MS1. Stephen was the first to drive the MS1 on a rally, when it was the “zero” or safety car on the popular Grizedale Stages rally in late November. So what next? Stephen has an ambitious plan that leads ultimately to a WRC drive, starting with his current efforts to put together sponsors and support for a season in a Fiesta R2 contesting the British Rally Championship. The BRC is this year open exclusively to two-wheel-drive cars, and Stephen rates his chances of taking the championship as “very good”. If he does so he will be the only New Zealander to ever take a northern hemisphere rally title. Then he’s hoping to take out the WRC Academy championship, won this year by Irishman Craig Breen in an M-Sport Fiesta. From there, this quick young Kiwi will have his eyes on the World Rally Championship.
