Where did common sense and decency go? What happened to people using their discretion when the occasion demanded it? What happened to compassion and understanding? I’m referring to the case recently reported by Campbell Live where a Hamilton schoolboy was sent home because he wore a pair of white sneakers to school on a rainy day, because his regulation black school shoes were full of holes and his mum couldn’t afford to buy him a new pair that week. Just as many people (and businesses) have found it tough to make ends meet lately, his mum wrote a note to the school, apologising for the non-regulation shoes, but said she would rectify the situation as soon as she could afford to. The school still sent him home for failure to comply with its dress code. It just staggers me that the school and its staff couldn’t bend the rules in compassionate circumstances for just one boy for just one day. have you discretely extended credit for regular customers who are a bit short on funds but need their vehicle to be roadworthy so they can go off to work or look after their family? I’m not for a moment saying that we shouldn’t run our schools and businesses with rules and procedures governing standards, but I think sometimes we ought to give people a break when extenuating circumstances demand it. Enjoy your reading and I hope you find this issue informative and useful. Kindest regards,

Robert

Harley-Davidsons, hot rods and more The sixth annual Speedshow will deliver another weekend of automotive and motorsport pleasures when the gates open at the ASB Showgrounds on July 21. Harley-Davidson is making its Speedshow debut with the team from Harley-Davidson Australia working with local Harley-Davidson dealers to create an impressive display of the 2012 Harley-Davidson model line-up. One entire display hall is dedicated to the New Zealand Hot Rod Association 50th Anniversary 2012 national hot rod show. Visitors can enjoy a trip back in time as the show recognises the pioneering builders and fabricators with prime examples of current and original hot rods and drag racing cars from the ‘60s and ‘70s on display. The array of new and classic vehicles at this year’s Speedshow is as exciting and diverse as ever, according to the show’s developer and promoter Keith Sharp. “Rare, just launched, fun, custom and jet-powered are among the

Owned by Sime Darby Automobiles, which distributes Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and SRT in New Zealand, the Viper ACR is the only example in the country, one of only two in this white, red and black colour configuration and one of only 50 manufactured in the world. Also from the team at Sime Darby, the Chrysler 300 SRT is launched locally just days before the Speedshow. Just 30 examples of the 392 cubic. inch. 470 hp 300 SRT sedans are confirmed for New Zealand. Most capped dealer

Auckland Motors Mitsubishi dealer principal Mark Barton earned a place in history when he won a Diamond Dealer award at the company’s awards evening held in Taupo recently. Mr Barton who leads an operation that has served the Auckland public since 1908, has become the most capped Diamond Dealer ever, with nine awards in his trophy cabinet according

to Mitsubishi’s sales and marketing manager, Warren Brown. Mr Brown says the latest award comes as a three-year redevelopment of the dealership’s Manukau City site is about to be topped off by the opening of a new 450sqm showroom. Auckland Motors Mitsubishi also won the award for finance dealer of the year.

Mitsubishi’s pinnacle Diamond Dealer awards, recognising all-round excellence, also went to Napier (Wayne Kirk, Wayne Kirk Mitsubishi), Morrinsville (Darrell Russell, Piako Mitsubishi), Newmarket (Andrew Simms, Andrew Simms Mitsubishi), and Tauranga (Keith Henderson, Bay City Mitsubishi). Baigent Motors of Matamata, with a six-decade legacy of outstanding service to customers in the Waikato town, were the first winners of a new Diamond Dealer award for service and parts dealerships. Manager Justin Scelly received the award from Mitsubishi’s managing director Masao Tanuma. Malcolm Lovett Automotive (Ashburton) and Cavanagh Motors (Te Puke) were finalists. Mr Brown said the Diamond Dealer awards were made against the backdrop of a 40 percent lift in the number of customers choosing a new Mitsubishi over the past two years. He says the awards, which are limited to seven each year, stimulated dealers to excel in every aspect of their operations. The Diamond Dealer award also went to Mitsubishi Fuso truck dealer Keith Andrews, who had implemented significant improvement in the Auckland dealership he acquired last year. REAdER REPly 0120606

Asset Management says that one of the difficulties of current day business is that while many business owners are still busy getting the job done, cash-flow can still be a struggle, with debtors simply unable to pay for the products or services. That leaves the businesses that have supplied the goods or services on credit with too much month left at the end of the money! Asset Management says it understands the stress this can create and have introduced factoring to its array of financial services to help businesses address the problem. According to Asset Management, factoring has previously only been available to larger companies from large financiers and banks, so it is advantageous for NZ small to medium businesses to be able to take advantage of this type of facility now. Here‘s how it works: 1. A business delivers the goods or services to its clients as usual.

2. The business then sends the invoice to Asset Finance. 3. Asset Finance gives the business an immediate payment of around typically 80 percent of the face value of the invoice (less fee). 4. The customer pays Asset Finance. 5. Asset Finance releases the balance owing to the business Factoring can save business money in three key ways: a. Asset Management follows up on unpaid invoices, so a business can avoid the time-consuming staff costs. b. Eliminate “prompt payment” discounts given to your customers. c. By having cash to pay expenses quickly, business can negotiate a prompt payment discounts from suppliers. Asset Finance says it is able to offer a facility tailored to fit companies with monthly invoices totalling from $5,000 to $500,000.

Yokohama supports Feilding Feilding Tyre Service has not only moved into new business premises, but it also has the distinction of being the first Yokohama branded tyre centre in New Zealand. The business had outgrown the building it operated from for more than 30 years, so it relocated to new premises on Turners Road. The modern building has been extensively customised to suit and has the Yokohama logo extensively emblazoned on it. Feilding Tyres Service is locally owned and operated by Gwynn Wozencraft and Bev Dyer who purchased the business in 2002. It began stocking Yokohama Tyres more than two years ago, and the brand now represents a major portion of their business. “As an independent tyre dealer we are excited to have been offered this outstanding opportunity to partner more closely with a globally respected brand like Yokohama,” says Gwynn Wozencraft. “It will be a win/win situation for our customers. We are able to provide an even higher level of service from our new premises, and offer competitive pricing across the full range of Yokohama passenger vehicle, 4WD and commercial truck tyres.”

The new premises offers three large bays for fast servicing of cars and four wheel drives, with a purpose built truck bay to service the trade. The large concrete yard provides easy access and a comfortable waiting room is available for customers. “Our partnership with Gwynn and Bev represents a new direction for Yokohama in New Zealand,” says Radial Imports General Manager, Andrew Peake. As the exclusive NZ distributor for Yokohama, Radial Imports seeks to work closer with its circle of

independent tyre dealers who successfully promote the brand in their areas. “This extended association with Feilding Tyre Service recognises the strong position that it enjoys in the Manawatu” says Peake. “Thanks to Feilding Tyre Service we have a growing number of drivers experiencing the benefits of Yokohama tyres, whether it’s on their car, 4WD or fleet trucks.” The official opening took place on Friday June 1. Getting in the Moog Steering and suspension specialist Autolign says it is now distributing one of the world’s most recognisable brands in steering parts, Moog. Designed for American manufactured vehicles, Autolign says Moog has a huge range of tie rod ends, ball joints, rack ends, idler arms and rubber bushes. The range covers vehicles manufactured more than 50 years ago and popular makes such as Buick, Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and many more. Pricing is also competitive and in many cases Autolign says it is cheaper than product sourced from online suppliers in the USA. Autolign says the Moog range now complements its existing stock of more than 3000 part numbers from around ten different brands to offer

the most comprehensive array of steering related parts in the market. Autolign says it stocks some of the world’s biggest names in shock absorbers, bushes, coil springs and the aforementioned chassis and steering parts, backed up by a nationwide 11-branch network and more than 50 years of industry experience.

New Monroe on line catalogue

The new Monroe online catalogue provides fast and easy reference to a host of new packaging and part number changes, along with many other advantages and can be accessed through the local Autolign website www.autolign.co.nz. The new online catalogue becomes a part of the existing Monroe website, so there is no complication in locating it or using it through www.autolign.co.nz. All application listings will be laid out online exactly as they have appeared in hard

copy in the past, while something that a print copy cannot provide are quick search links to locate the correct Monroe product by either vehicle model or by part number. As the Monroe online catalogue is updated as soon as new products are released, access to Monroe shock absorber applications is up to the minute. Customers will also be able to easily print results if necessary, while hyperlinks have also been included that link directly to product notes, training and fitment information to make it the total one stop resource guide. Since its last print catalogue, Monroe has released 343 new part numbers and 250 of these are specifically for European, Korean and Japanese vehicle applications. This, coupled with new packaging and part number changes, led to the decision to develop this new version of the Monroe catalogue online, with the emphasis being on making it as easy to use and as informative as possible. Narva says it has released the first complete range of fully ADR compliant and street legal performance headlamp globes in New Zealand. It says motorists can now upgrade to globes with the peace of mind that each globe is ADR approved and street legal. Automotive retailers and the trade can also sell and promote these Narva globes without concerns about the legalities or otherwise of the various globe options and the consequences of their recommendations. For those looking to see further there are now three options to choose from the Narva range; the Plus50, Plus100 and for the first time in New Zealand, a Plus120 globe. Any of the Plus range of globes will improve night

This simple upgrade provides up to 20 metres longer beam and is suitable for polycarbonate lamps with no increase in power consumption or heat. Through maximising the Xenon filler gas in the Plus100, globe, vision is improved with the delivery of 100 percent more light on the road. These globes achieve up to 35 metres longer beam without any increase in heat or power consumption according to Narva. Premium performance comes with the brand new top-of-the-range Narva Plus120 globe, delivering the highest light output available. These globes produce 120 percent more light on the road compared with a conventional halogen globe, achieving up to 40 metres longer beam with no increase on power consumption or heat. A first for New Zealand motorists, these new globes are also suitable for use with polycarbonate headlamps, thanks to their low heat.

Drivers who prefer the colour of the globe to be whiter can select from three NARVA globes that deliver more light combined with a whiter colour. Normal halogen globes are rated at 3200 Kelvin and NARVA’s Blue Plus90 globes combine the benefits of 90 precent morelight on the road compared with conventional globes, with a 20 percent whiter light output delivering 3750K. The Arctic Plus50 globe at 3900K with its distinctive white headlamp appearance has 50 percent more light volume. The third option from NARVA is the ‘Intense’ model, which the company describes as a breakthrough in technology. This ADR approved globe delivers 4200K, the maximum legal blue, bright white light output, with up to 30 percent more light volume. Commercial vehicles have also been catered for. A new 24V filament design that features in the 24V Plus100 globes, now produces 100 percent more life and 100 percent more light volume on the road with no increase in power consumption or heat build up that could impact on the vehicle’s wiring. New generation coolant It is pretty hard to get excited about coolants, says Valvoline, but its latest innovation in coolant is being used by OEMs such as Mercedes-Benz. Valvoline says its latest G-05 product is a new hybrid organic acid technology (HOAT) coolant designed for both petrol and diesel passenger cars. The company says that changes in coolant technology have been largely driven by these trends: • New high efficiency engines have higher coolant flow. • Lower fuel consumption has lead to the use of aluminium and plastics (lighter weight materials). •Engines have less coolant volume. •Lower emissions are producing higher temperatures. There are three glycol-based coolants, being IAT (inorganic acid technology), OAT (organic acid technology) and HOAT (hybrid organic acid technology) coolants. These coolants contain approximately 96 percent ethylene glycol, which provides anti-freeze and anti-boil protection and four percent additives. They are then further diluted to either 50 percent or 33 percent ratio of coolant concentrate to water according to the OEM requirements. The anti-freeze and anti-boil protection is permanent and consistent across all these types of coolants.

However it’s the additives that provide the corrosion protection that deplete over time, requiring coolant change, and it’s the type of additive technology used that makes each of these groups so very different to each other says Valvoline. IAT coolants are predominately found in many workshops and are recommended for most passenger cars. These coolants use fast acting inorganic additives with service intervals offered on average between two to three years says Valvoline. OAT coolants are long life coolants which use slow acting long-life organic acid additives and are recommended by some OEMs for new models. Service intervals offered by OAT coolants average around five years. Valvoline says people need to consider this new OAT technology may not be appropriate for some older style radiators. In fact, the slow acting inhibitors may provide inadequate protection of some metal – for example, solder. The best of both HOAT-based coolants such as Valvoline G-05 are in theory designed to take advantage of the best of both technologies. It contains a blend of both inorganic acid and organic ccid additives that provide long-life protection. Valvoline says its G-05

can be used in both older and new cars as it is compatible with all the glycol-based coolants. The product testing began in August 1999. Valvoline teamed up with a New York City taxicab operation to conduct a field test on its G-05 Antifreeze/Coolant performance. Fifteen 1999 Ford Crown Victoria cabs equipped with 4.6L V8 engines were tested with Valvoline G-05 coolant to 1.6 million km for more than 14 months. To compare results, control cabs using a competitive conventional green coolant were also tested. The final results proved that Valvoline G-05 coolant has outstanding protection in all areas, according to Valvoline. Not only were there no cooling system failures, the final engine inspections revealed two significant differences between the Valvoline G-05 and the competitive coolants: “Valvoline G-05 Antifreeze/Coolant was tested in the hardest-working taxis in the world, under the most brutal conditions,” says Valvoline technical manager Ed Kopinski. “These vehicles ran year round, 22 hours per day in stop-andgo city traffic. G-05 performed for more than 160,000km without a change of coolant. It exceeded all our expectations for engine and cooling system protection.” REAdER REPly 0120611

Belting along with Dayco Dayco has released a new range of all terrain vehicle (ATV) engine belts while also expanding its range of aftermarket engine belts for Scooters. There are three new ATV engine belt products to suit specific ATV use, from off-road racing, through to agricultural or recreational use. More than 48 ATV part numbers have been released, covering the vast majority of these vehicles currently in use in Australasia. The Dayco XTX (extreme torque) engine belt is the most durable replacement ATV engine belt currently available in the aftermarket, according to Dayco. Manufactured in Italy, the XTX belts have been engineered to suit engines of 800cc capacity and above. With specially formulated Neoprene and Aramid fibre used in the manufacturing process, XTX ATV belts delivers the performance required by the most aggressive ATV riders, according to Dayco. It says belts achieve this with design features that include deeper top

cogs and rounded bottom cogs for flexibility and long life. Dayco says the advantages of fitting a XTX ATV engine belt include faster and more consistent throttle response, a reduction in slippage during the highest levels of torque demands, more responsive engine braking, and cooler running. The new Dayco XTX belt has also been tested and proven to withstand beyond 12,000 rpm. The Dayco HPX (High Performance Extreme) ATV engine belt has been designed to dominate any type of terrain without throttle response compromises. Manufactured using P-Aramid cord reinforcement and a specially engineered fibre loaded Neoprene compound, the HPX ATV engine belt delivers the combination of strength and durability demanded by highperformance engines. This Dayco ATV belt has also been proven to run cooler and provide a longer operating life than competing products. The third new Dayco ATV engine belt product now available

from BNT is the Dayco HP (High Performance) ATV belt. This product has been designed for use on ATV’s, golf carts and agricultural utility vehicles. Manufactured from an Aramid reinforced Polychloroprene compound and P-Aramid cord design, Dayco says this belt offers enhanced dimensional integrity and stability for a long and reliable service life. The Scooter engine belt range now includes 43 part numbers covering the majority of these vehicles being used more frequently. The Dayco power plus Scooter belt features Aramid fibre inserts that provide high thermal stability to the belt which reduces elongation, particularly when starting. These design inclusions also ensure resistance to wear that is twice as high as polyester manufactured engine belts. Dayco says its scooter belt range also features an indentation at the back of the belt that provides maximum flexibility, a larger mating surface and improved belt cooling during operation.

Mackay wins Holden contract After a 15 year hiatus, Mackay Consolidated Industries has been awarded the contract for the manufacture and supply of all engine and ancillary hoses for the current Commodore model. Mackay says that Holden was seeking engine hoses consistently produced to higher performance and quality standards. Mackay was awarded the contract for Commodore hoses, including cooling system, power steering reservoir, brake booster vacuum and other ancillary hoses. “The major benefit of local supply is that we are literally just half an hour away from Holden’s engineering department. This has proven to be immensely useful to both parties – any issues or requests are dealt with quickly and nothing is lost in translation,” said Mackay sales manager Les Zanati. Rubber hoses are generally subject to last minute changes, because of the relatively low tooling costs. As such, Mackay says it strives to be as responsive and flexible as possible. The company says it made a significant investment in hose making equipment, including knitting machines, high pressure vessels, stamping machines, ovens, washing machines and associated ancillary equipment. The new equipment provides additional capacity, improved production and increased output, coupled with enhanced levels of quality control. Environmental benefits include reduced water consumption due to the high efficiency of the new washing machines. Mackay has also invested in portable 3D scanning technology known as the Z Scanner. This technology allows Mackay to quickly and accurately confirm compliance with the required specifications. The first Commodores with the full complement of Mackay hoses have already rolled off the production line. REAdER REPly 0120512A

Law reform complicating transactions The Motor Trade Association (MTA) says it is concerned that some of the conditions being proposed under the consumer law reform bill are heavyhanded and may make conditions for consumers more complicated instead of easier. The bill passed its first reading on 9 February 2012, with Parliament’s commerce committee hearing submissions during May. “Some of what’s being proposed in parts of the bill around ‘uninvited direct sales’ looks like it’s missing the mark and could include transactions

that it shouldn’t, says MTA spokesperson Ian Stronach “For example, ‘uninvited direct sales’ which are intended to cover activities such as ‘door-to-door’ type selling has been significantly extended. It now covers any sales of more than $100 made from a location that is away from the seller’s primary place of business, and whenever the seller uses a phone to contact the customer to make a sale. This could end up covering far more transactions, make them more complicated and involve a much wider range of consumers than was probably intended.” From an automotive industry perspective, the bill in its current form means that even something as commonplace as a warrant of fitness (WoF) transaction could be covered under the scope of an ‘uninvited direct sale’. In the course of carrying out a WoF inspection, it is quite common for a repairer to ring the customer to say they have found an issue with the vehicle and then give a quote for repair. Under the proposed reform, once the customer gives their approval to proceed with the repair, that repair then becomes an ‘uninvited direct sale’. The implications of this are significant, and outside the scope of what a normal business operator or consumer might expect. Also being proposed as part of ‘uninvited direct sales’, is that the repairer must provide the consumer with a written ‘direct sale agreement’ within five working days of the work being agreed; a practical impossibility in most cases. In addition, within the five day cool-down period that starts after the customer has received their copy of the written ‘direct sale agreement’, the customer can ask for their money back. Changing a vehicle back to its original condition will be very difficult in most cases, but if requested, a full refund must be given. So, in this example, in total, the buyer effectively has a 10-day cooling down period. “This is both illogical and unreasonable, given they probably want their vehicle back the same day. And, there is no right for either party to contract out of these provisions,” says Stronach. While it is not likely that many customers would exercise their right to get their money back or their goods reinstated back to original condition on everyday transactions, MTA says it is concerned that the ability to do so is being considered. The intent of the bill should be to provide coverage for consumers, which is both practical and effective, and MTA says it will be encouraging the commerce select committee to make changes that reflect this. Repco celebrates 90 Years

Colin Simpson

This year marks a significant milestone in the history of Kiwi automotive experts Repco, as it celebrates its 90th year as one of the country’s most trusted automotive parts supplier. A brand in this country that is synonymous with automotive knowhow and with a rich heritage in New Zealand motorsport, Repco says it has become the automotive supplier of choice for the vast majority of New Zealanders who purchase parts or seek repair advice. It is a role Mark Brunton, executive general manager for Repco New Zealand, believes has as much to do with the brand’s legacy in this country as it does with great knowledge and product offering. “At Repco we focus on providing exceptional level of service, customer care and genuine automotive knowhow which we offer our customers on a day-to-day basis.

“And, after almost a century of being there to help New Zealanders to replace that blown fuse or fit that new set of brakes, we believe the company has become a real Kiwi institution. Repco is the brand we’ve all grown up with and the place our parents took us to buy our first motor oil, windscreen wiper blades or spare parts. It’s where so much information and passion for car care gets passed down.” Indeed, with 90 years now under its belt, the company says it has been around to assist every generation of New Zealander on the road today. With over 90 stores and 800 staff in New Zealand alone, Repco says it has come a long way and undergone a number of remarkable changes in a rapidly changing market since its foundation in 1922 in Collingwood, Victoria. Starting life as an automotive grinding business, it was not until 1926 that Repco opened its first replacements parts trade supply store. Unlike many businesses, Repco’s growing reputation as experts in the field of replacement auto parts meant the company was able to continue to expand through the depression years. With this growth came a defining period in the history of the company as Repco ventured further into the world of motorsport by assisting in the build of various race engines and Formula One cars, the first of which was the famed Maybach 1.

What followed were the golden years of Repco’s involvement in motorsport, particularly across Australasia. The new Repco-developed engines drove the company to its first championship, as the Maybach 3 took out the New Zealand Grand Prix for the first time in 1954. Just five years later, Jack Brabham won his first Formula One Championship driving a Cooper Climax sporting a number of Repco parts. By the 1960s, Repco had become a household name in motorsport circles. The Repco Brabham engine was providing the winning edge to a number of the world’s top drivers, including New Zealand’s own Denis Hulme, who won his World F1 Driver Championship under the Repco Brabham badge. It is around this time that Colin Simpson, Lower North Island area manager and one of Repco New Zealand’s longest serving employees, started work with the company as an afterschool delivery boy and junior warehouse assistant. “I remember my first day on the job with Repco, excited to be around all the cars and parts, eager to learn and thrilled to be out of school and part of a great work team,” says Colin. Colin is typical of the type of people Repco attracts to its staff – loyal, hardworking and truly passionate about the industry in which he works. In fact, Colin is one of 95 people who have currently been with the company for

25 years or over. In Colin’s more than 40 year service he has seen the development of Repco in the New Zealand market from its inception. “I’ve been privileged enough to work with Repco through all its most exciting milestones. When I started, the brand was very much known as the industry leader in wholesale parts with a strong involvement in the motorsport arena,” he says. “I’ve worked with the company through some defining times – the rise to prominence of Japanese car manufacturers and the diversification of the automobile market, the shift to an advanced electronic and online operation and the addition of an ever expanding, market leading retail arm.” What has never changed, says Colin, is the company’s uncompromising commitment to its customers. “For those who deal with Repco from day to day – be it customers, suppliers or staff – their car is a hugely emotional asset, and we get that. We make it our responsibility to make sure what’s important to them is important to us, and because we’re all car people at heart it comes pretty easy to us. “It’s all about bringing our own enthusiasm and expertise to the job and melding it with a level of customer service that you only get when you come to Repco. That was the case on my first day on the job back in 1967 and it remains the case today.” REAdER REPly 0120616

Vehicle sales rising New vehicle sales continue their strong recovery, with 7048 new vehicles were sold overall in April – which is usually a slow month because of Easter holidays compared to 5610 in April 2011, an increase of 1438 vehicles (26 percent). Year to date, overall sales are up by 3642 (13 percent). New passenger car sales were again strong, with sales of 5430, which was 1172 (28 percent) ahead compared to April 2011. Year to date, new car sales are ahead by 3670 (17 percent). New commercial vehicle sales of 1618 was up 266 units (20 percent) compared to April 2011. Year to date, overall new commercial sales are virtually identical to 2011’s levels. Toyota was the top passenger vehicle brand with sales of 785

units (14 percent share) followed by Holden with sales of 550 units (10 percent share) narrowly ahead of Hyundai with 546 units (10 percent share). Suzuki Swift took out the race for leading passenger car model with sales of 228 units, followed by Toyota Corolla with 218 units and Mazda’s new CX-5 on 179 units. Toyota was the top selling brand amongs commercial vehicles with sales of 420 units (26 percent share) followed by Ford with sales of 331 units (20 percent share) and Nissan who achieved sales of 219 units (14 percent share). Ford Ranger proved to be both the best selling commercial vehicle and best selling vehicle overall with sales of 279 units. This was just ahead of Toyota Hilux which recorded sales of

278 units, followed by Toyota Hiace with sales of 130 units. With sales of 5877 units, first time used imported passenger cars were down 279 units (five percent) compared to April 2011. Despite fears that the market would struggle in the face of reduced availability, it has so far held up well with overall sales for the year to date down by just 2053 units (eight percent). Going against the trend of improved sales were on road motorcycles. Sales of 411 units was down by 149 units (27 percent) compared to April 2011. After a positive start to 2012, overall sales are down by 310 units (13 percent) for the year to date. *Figures supplied by the Motor Trade Association (MTA). REAdER REPly 0120616A

Seeking the best The annual search for Australia and New Zealand’s leading automotive apprentice – the Snapon Tools Apprentice of the Year 2012 – launched in April. Now in its fourth year, the tool business is stepping up its hunt for the ‘best in class’, looking for those who have not only excelled in their trade but have given back to their communities and their industry. Established four years ago, Apprentice of the Year attracts submissions from apprentices training to be a motor mechanic, auto electrician, spray painter or panel beater. The winning apprentice will take home a total prize package valued at more than $11,000 including a Snap-on Tools product pack featuring the essentials that will set up any mechanic for life, as well as the major item that every mechanic needs – a 54-inch Roll Cab with plenty of space for an expanding tool collection. On top of this, the winner will receive a Gold Pass ticket to Summernats 2013 including flights and accommodation. Snap-on Tools Australian sales manager Steve Jones says the Apprentice of the Year was created

to celebrate automotive apprentices in Australia and New Zealand. “It’s a tough slog being an apprentice,” says Steve. “There’s often little reward for the hard work they put in. Many apprentices find themselves in their trade because of their passion for cars and engines. We created Apprentice of the Year with Street Machine to shine a light on the guys and girls who are absolutely top of their trade, but who often go through challenges to get there. “Our inaugural winner Nadja Lenehan was a country girl who moved to the city, with no job, simply because she wanted to join the trade. Our 2010 winner Wayne Grima spent every available hour building his own show car, and last year’s winner Sevag Paresghian had a promising career pushing a pen, but he decided he wanted to throw his skills into being a mechanic,” says Jones. Every year we attract a really high standard of submissions. But this year we’re taking it up a notch with a dedicated Facebook page, micro-site and video to support the launch.” The judging panel for 2012 includes Owen Webb from custom automotive painters House of Kolor; one of

Australia’s most highly regarded street machiners Howard Astill; as well as 2011 winner Sevag Paresghian and Snap-on business manager and auto engineer Alan Moon. Moderator of the judging panel Paul Franks says they are keen to hear from apprentices who are not only great at their job but play a role in their local community.

“You might have helped the local drag racing club, or even driven the bus for the local retirement village. We’re looking someone who’s responsible, community aware, has a passion for cars and all things automotive,” he said. The competition closes Friday 1st June 2012. REAdER REPly 0120518

SAE-A appoints new executive director The Society of Automotive Engineers – Australasia (SAE-A) has appointed Geoff Pearson as executive director. Founded in 1927, and affiliated with SAE International, the Society promotes excellence in automotive engineering through professional development, education, conferences and networking activities. SAE-A president Bill Malkoutzis acknowledged the contribution of incumbent Max Chanter, who is retiring. Bill Malkoutzis said an exhaustive search secured a leader who will bring innovative ideas and diverse industry experience to the role. “Geoff has been active in SAE-A programs for many years, particularly the international Formula SAE-Australasia education competition for engineering students hosted by the Society at the end of every year,” he says. “Geoff’s close links with the universities, their engineering students and the companies that employ them, will bring a fresh and vibrant approach to the Society’s programs,” says Bill Malkoutzis. Geoff Pearson’s first experiences with the automotive world were part of life on his father’s farm where he spent many hours tinkering in the machinery shed. His early working years were in the motorcycle industry before moving into

Innovation for more than 85 years Since 1926, Penrite Oil Company has been blending high quality oils for all applications. Using more than 85 years of experience and expertise, and the latest R & D technology, Penrite says it is constantly formulating and developing superior products. Penrite says it recognises that different engine designs require a range of oils to properly lubricate and protect the engine while preserving the fuel economy or power of the engine. The original oil requirement for start-up viscosity is considered initially. Then the most appropriate oil grade in the range is applied that ensures maximum protection at operating temperatures. This is just one of the reasons why Penrite says its

petrol engine oils have some of the widest multigrade ranges of any oil company. Penrite says its range of engine oils offer the latest industry specifications, the Extra ten, OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) approvals and full zinc for maximum antiwear protection and superior performance. What does this really mean?

Penrite says that technicians can be sure they are using the highest-quality oil for the specified application. As mechanical technology advances and the complexity of lubricants available on the market increases, so do the risks associated with using a substandard or incorrect oil. It is imperative according to

Penrite that the correct oil is used in each application to avoid costly damage and warranty claims on products that don’t meet the latest industry specifications or OEM (Original Equipment Manufactures) approvals. Any sort of damage resulting from this sort of misapplication can be very expensive for a garage or service centre. However, the greatest damage could be to its reputation and ultimately its future business. Penrite says that customers will love the 100 percent product guarantee and resellers will surprised at the greater margins driven by this highquality product. REAdER REPly 0120620

Bendix $8.8 million Investment

FMP Group Australia who manufactures the Bendix brand has commissioned a new $3.5 million (AUD) moulding press as part of an $8.8 (AUD) million upgrade to its

plant in Ballarat, Victoria. The moulding press investment, was supported by a $2 (AUD)million grant from the State Government and it was officially opened at a ceremony

in the Ballarat plant by the Richard Dalla-Riva the Australian federal minister for manufacturing, export and trade. Employing more than 280 personnel and producing in excess of 13.1 million brake parts each year, FMP Group Australia says it is a major supplier and exporter of automotive components. FMP Group Australia general manager Graeme Dixon says the new moulding press supplied by Austrian specialist IAG delivers new technology which allows the Bendix engineering team to develop the most advanced products possible and bring them to market. The new fully automatic press centre is capable of handling various friction material compounds, automatically weighing, apportioning and compressing material to metal

backing plates in a technically advanced hot pressing and curing process with 16 pressing and ventilating cycles. Press and ventilating cycles as well as temperature divergences are controlled by microprocessors which automatically calculate and control the required cycle time. The production capacity and efficiency of the new press will increase output dramatically and assist in advancing leading edge brake technology. FMP Group Australia is a joint venture owned by Honeywell International USA and Pacifica Group Limited Australia and is the technical engineering and research and development centre for Asia Pacific. In addition to the manufacturing facilities in Ballarat, the company also operates manufacturing plants in Malaysia and Thailand. REAdER REPly 0120620A

Hyundai expands 30/30 range

Hyundai Motors New Zealand Ltd (HMNZ) has expanded its available range of 30/30 trade parts by more than 25 percent in response to the programme’s popularity amongst the independent motor trade. What started out initially as a trial has returned such positive feedback from independent garages and service operators, that after 12 months on from its first launch the range of parts has now been extended to meet growing demand.

Parts now available include common service items all on Hyundai models, a range of suspension components became available in April 2012 and timing belt kits have also proven to be very popular with the independent service trade. HMNZ says whilst being proactive amongst the independent trade with localised marketing programs, it did receive some negative feedback from people who didn’t know about it, hence it has decided to promote the 30/30 program

nationally through the media. HMNZ general manager Andy Sinclair says the motivation for the 30/30 program was to ensure that customers, with older Hyundai vehicles in particular, could have genuine parts fitted at a reasonable price. He says lowering trade pricing due to increased discount has certainly encouraged more and more members of the independent trade to fit genuine in preference to aftermarket. “We understand that we won’t retain 100 percent of our customer car park in the Hyundai service network, but we did want them to have the opportunity of maintaining their cars with genuine Hyundai parts through their preferred independent service provider,” says Andy Sinclair. “The key point is that just because a vehicle is out of warranty and is no longer being serviced by a Hyundai dealer, the owner shouldn’t be denied the availability of genuine Hyundai parts and consumables. “More importantly, these genuine parts can be fitted by an independent service provider who will enjoy a healthy margin for doing so and be confident that the vehicle won’t come back due to poor or ill-fitting parts.” The 30/30 program was originally 30 groups of parts and consumables with a 30 percent trade discount for the independents, and due to the popularity of this, the product group has been expanded by 25 percent. All-new Santa Fe due soon Hyundai Motor Company recently presented the all-new Santa Fe at the 2012 New York International Auto Show. It says the all-new Santa Fe showcases the brand’s capabilities through its ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ design, fuel economy and it contains a host of features to delight drivers and passengers with high expectations for functionality and comfort. The exterior of the Santa Fe invokes the impression of motion through its design called Storm Edge, which captures a strong and dynamic image created by nature during the formation of a storm. The bold hexagonal front grille lets people know immediately that Santa Fe is a Hyundai. “The all-new Santa Fe looks spectacular and we cannot wait to have them available here for our customers,” says Hyundai NZ general manager Andy Sinclair. Hyundai believes the all-new Santa Fe will answer a need for families that seek the size, flexibility and capability of a SUV. The new Santa Fe rides on a 2700mm wheelbase, with an overall length of 4690mm, height of 1680mm, and width of 1880mm, while lowered height and extended overhang gives it a sportier look. With its wider stance, the new Santa Fe offers more spacious cabin room as well. While both first row headroom and second row legroom are increased for more

space, seating convenience is also improved by lowering hip point and ground clearance. Hyundai also surprised media in New York by unveiling a long wheelbase three-row, sevenpassenger model. This version, which will go on sale in the USA in January 2013, will have more space and bigger engine, while riding on the longer wheelbase of 2800mm, with increased overall length of 4905mm, height of 1690mm and width of 1885mm. This model is unlikely to be marketed outside the USA.

Hyundai says the Santa Fe is the number one selling diesel passenger vehicle in New Zealand, and is the second biggest selling model behind i30 for Hyundai New Zealand with 1113 units sold in 2011. The all-new Santa Fe will go on sale in New Zealand later this year and is expected to successfully position itself as the firm family favourite SUV in both the New Zealand and global market. Supply and margin is critical

With the ever growing car park of Toyota passenger and light commercials on New Zealand roads, Toyota New Zealand has sought to further improve its service and pricing on mechanical and maintenance parts for the independent repair trade.

There are more than 686,000 Toyota vehicles within the ageing domestic fleet which presents an enormous opportunity for the independent trade, particularly as the newer vehicles come to the end of their factory warranty period.

Creating a user-friendly platform to ensure that more and more genuine parts are available to the trade will ensure these vehicles enjoy a long and trouble-free service life according, to Toyota New Zealand. Manager of parts, sales and operations Terry Lydon says that Toyota New Zealand has further expanded its range of trade grade products to meet the growing demand from the independent repair trade for competitively priced and easily accessed genuine parts. “We’ve followed the market trend and have decided to price many of our genuine items more competitively to allow a better transaction price and a greater selection of parts and consumables to become available to our valued trade customers,” he says. “We’ve recognised that both continuity of supply of genuine parts and a fair margin is critical to the trade and that’s what has driven this new policy.”

Terry says that the company has a 95 percent fulfillment rate from its National Customer Centre in Palmerston North where the warehousing space currently occupies a 22,000 square metre footprint that is the same size as five rugby fields. Fast moving parts and consumables are also delivered daily from its Auckland-based warehouse. Regular airfreight shipments mean that Toyota New Zealand can also supply those hard to get or unusual parts quickly and efficiently. Toyota New Zealand has also focused on more product and service training for its dealer parts staff to further improve its offer. “We want the trade to pick up the phone and ring us first, secure in the knowledge that they will get the right part at the right time at the right price, so it’s a win-win situation for all,” says Terry Lydon. New Camry raises the NZV8 stakes Toyota’s 2012 Camry will join Ford and Holden on the NZV8s grid for the 2012-2013 summer racing season as new-generation NZV8 race cars make their debut. Paeroa-based Richards Team Motorsport has announced a twocar team and will build V8-engined 2012 Toyota Camry race cars for the coming NZV8 Gold Star championship season. Richards Team Motorsport is the competition division of Tony Richards Toyota and is managed by Stephen Richards and chief engineer Grant Lowe. The arrival of the new Camry race cars marks the first time a third brand has hit the track in any V8 series in Australasia. The arrival of a third automotive brand in the Gold Star championship is seen by many in the sport as adding diversity and excitement to the premier race category. “This is a very exciting development for the championship and we are looking forward to getting the new Camry race car on the track for the first time,” says Stephen Richards. The cars will use a race-proven 5.0-litre engine developed by Toyota Racing Development (TRD) in the USA for Grand-Am endurance racing, sourced by Toyota New Zealand. The four-cam, four valve per cylinder engines are purpose-built competition

24

units with a motorsport pedigree that includes the Daytona 24 Hour race. The team’s first car, which will be chassis #5 for the new NZV8 programme, is being built for upand-coming racer Martin Short. The chassis build is now under way and the body panels have arrived; the first engine is currently on its way from America. The driver of the second car will be announced later. All the new NZV8s are based on identical tubular steel chassis designed and built by Mitchell Race

www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz

Xtreme (MRX) in Hamilton. “One of the great things about NZV8s is ease with which a wide range of automotive brands can participate. Any suitable mid-sized four door sedan can be the donor vehicle, which maximises the interest and appeal of the championship,” says Mr Richards. Teams building new generation cars simply decide which body panels and engines they will use. Engines are approved for the series on the basis of having similar outputs. All cars use a New Zealand-made TT Industries six

speed sequential race transmission. “Matching the new Camry to a 5.0-litre Toyota V8 emphasises the brand’s proud motorsport history and will bring Toyota race fans out to support their brand in what will be a close-fought and exciting championship,” says Mr Richards. In addition to the two-car team announced today by Richards Team Motorsport, other Toyota dealers have expressed interest in the initiative. Up to four Camry V8s may front the first round of the championship. REAdER REPly 0120624A

Buy Genuine Honda fluids for a chance to win When using non-genuine fluids as opposed to a manufacturer recommended product, there are a few things that should be noted. When workshops use genuine Honda fluids, $40 of every $100 retailed stays in their pocket when they order online or by phone. That’s a great profit for them, and their customers have the peace of mind that the three year/100km warranty on their genuine Honda Parts won’t be affected. Using incorrect fluids voids this guarantee, so why risk it? Engine and transmission design requires quality genuine product to ensure any repairs done maintains the car’s warranty standards which avoids any comeback from customers says Honda. Genuine Honda fluids also ensure vehicle durability and help maintain the very high fuel economy/emission standards Honda has set. Looking at the benefits of using a product with the backing of the manufacturer over a more general product it’s a real no-brainer. Honda unveils UNI-CUB

Honda Motor Co recently unveiled the new UNI-CUB, a personal mobility device designed for use by individuals and within public spaces. Representing an evolution of the U3-X personal mobility concept device that Honda announced in 2009, the UNI-CUB features a

26

compact design with comfortable saddle and offers the same freedom of movement in all directions that a person enjoys while walking. This is achievable by Honda’s development of proprietary balance control technology and the world’s first omni-directional driving wheel system

www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz

(Honda omni traction drive system) – inspired by robotic technologies developed for Asimo, Honda’s worldfamous humanoid robot. These technologies allow the rider to control speed, move in any direction, turn and stop, all simply by shifting his or her weight. Since the rider can

freely move forward, backward, sideto-side and diagonally, he or she can quickly and easily manoeuvre among other people. Moreover, UNI-CUB’s compact saddle-style packaging makes it easy for the rider’s legs to reach the ground while maintaining eye-level height with other pedestrians. This configuration promotes harmony between the rider and others, letting the rider travel freely and comfortably inside facilities and among moving people. From June 2012 until March 2013, Honda will jointly conduct demonstration testing of UNI-CUB with Japan’s National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. Staff will perform demonstrations and use the device for making their rounds, while the museum’s annual pass holders will have the opportunity to test ride UNI-CUB. In addition to testing the feasibility of using UNI-CUB indoors, this project will explore the practical applications of the device in a wide range of environments within Japan and other countries. Technical support is vital AECS says that providing maximum technical support to its customers and the increased demand for this has sometimes resulted waiting times. AECS felt it could do better and it has put a new and unique support system in place to resolve this situation. At first this support system will cater for AECS Launch Scan tool owners but it will soon have a parallel system for AECS oscilloscope users. The system works just like an online web forum. However, unlike open online forums there will be an AECS team member answering the technical questions every working day. AECS has an unlimited number of internet connections to the forum, so all three of its highly-trained technical support staff could work on this at the same time wherever they are in the country. Customers with a problem vehicle can post the issue as a thread, and within a working day, there will be a reply from one of the three AECS technical staff.

Time to consider

Thanks to the new system an AECS support person will now have time to research the fault and data. In addition, they will have some time to consider the problem, instead of trying to provide a quick answer over the phone. Allowing for time to consider such issues will be beneficial to customers as it reduces possible and unnecessary further measurements. Additionally, the query entered and answers provided will be stored in an online database. This means that if customers encounter a similar problem they can look back at the solutions. This by itself acts as an extension of AECS training seminars. As part of support AECS utilises the data record function of the Launch Diagun which makes its online service quite unique. The Launch has a data record function and AECS has the ability to view live data recording from customers on its PCs. This enables

Forum support

AECS to see similar information as a factory tool. Customers can post the recording on the technical support forum so that technical staff can view it in greater detail. Data viewing

AECS can view a customers recording in much more detail as it has developed the software to do just this, ourselves. This software will be placed on the forum for customers to use as soon as AECS have it converted into a web application. This means it is working towards customers plucking the recording off a tool and dropping it into the AECS data viewer. This will also store the recording into the online database for future reference, with all comments made during the support case attached to it. AECS App

The data viewing application allows AECS to view as many and as few data lines as possible. Of course, the maximum number of data lines is limited to how many lines are recorded by a customer. AECS can zoom in to the detailed live data, which allows it to see and scroll through a recording and alert to possible faults. It can deduce repair or further measurement advice on these recordings. However, it needs to be understood that due to the nature of live data, there is far less detail than in oscilloscope recordings, due to the speed of communication between the ECU and the scan tool. On the flip side, there are live data lines which are not measurable with an oscilloscope, like calculated load, some adaption values, etc. However these data lines can still alert AECS to possible problems.

Google map

AECS has also created a map of Launch owners on the website. This allows customers to seek out other Launch users for increased support. It allows the help desk staff to quickly find a shop with Launch equipment, if during a technical call it needs to have a vehicle scanned with a tool of which the data can be trusted. The software quality the Launch scan tool possesses makes it easier for AECS to diagnose faults as the ‘human interference’ factor in the scan tool software manufacturing has been virtually eliminated, by Launch’ method of programming vehicle software into the tool. Motorcorp prefers Toughbook Laptop computers have joined spanners as essential tools of the vehicle servicing industry. However, for Land Rover and Jaguar distributor Motorcorp, only Panasonic Toughbook computers are good enough to keep the service departments of its 20 dealerships running smoothly. After initially equipping all the nationwide workshops with Toughbooks in 2005, the company recently deployed an additional fleet of new CF-19 Mk5 machines. “We chose these laptops largely on the basis of the track record of the first batch of machines and their ability to keep on performing,” says Jaguar national service manager Shane Lawson. Comworth product manager Rachel McBeth says the Panasonic CF-19 Toughbook is rugged, lightweight, wireless and convertible. “This fully-rugged laptop converts from a notebook to a convenient tablet with one quick swivel. It is also the first tablet to be certified for MIL-STD-810G and IP65, featuring a full magnesium alloy case capable of withstanding a 6-foot drop,” she says. MIL-STD-810G is a military specification which certifies the ability to withstand environmental conditions such as high and low temperatures, rain, humidity, shock, sand and dust exposure, salt fog, gunfire vibration, transport shock and leakage. IP65 is a rating which indicates total dust ingress protection and the ability to withstand low pressure water jets from any direction. Shane Lawson says although the workshop environment is tidy, it is a place where dust, grime and occasional exposure to the outdoors are to be expected for tools as well as the odd knock or fall. “The computers are as important as any other tool used in the workshop and have to be just as reliable. That necessitates the use of rugged equipment,” he says. “Standard machines could do the job at a lower purchase price; however, it is highly unlikely they would last more than perhaps a year or two. More than that, any downtime through breakages or other damage will impact the ability of the service department to do its work.” He contrasts that with the longevity of the Panasonic Toughbooks in Motorcorp workshops. “The 2005 models are still in service today, diagnosing older cars. It is this level of reliability which led us to opt for the

highest available specification in the new CF-19s,” he says. Lawson says that while in-car technology will change, today’s vehicles will stay on the roads for tens of years. “Just as the first generation of Toughbooks in our workshop continues to provide suitable diagnostics for older cars, so we expect the current generation to deliver reliable service into the future,” he says. Panasonic Toughbook has a very

low rate of failure according to Rachel McBeth. “Standard notebooks fail at a rate of one in three; for Toughbook, it is less than one in thirty. The three-year warranty which comes with these machines is further proof that they are built to last,” she says. The availability of local support through Panasonic’s appointed Toughbook provider Comworth and its nationwide presence is a further boost for Motorcorp,

Comworth assisted in the set-up of the machines including support in certifying the diagnostics software with Land Rover and Jaguar in the United Kingdom. It also configured each unit before delivery and maintains a standard image for Motorcorp. In the event of any issues, this means Comworth can rapidly configure and deliver a replacement machine to keep workshops operating with minimal interruption. REAdER REPly 0120629

Diagnostics from GDC Equipment GDC says it is so confident with the performance of the Autel MaxiDAS DS-708 diagnostic scan tool, that it will now make it a risk-free purchase. If a customer buys a DS-708 and if the tool does not do what is needed or what was promised by GDC, then it will provide a 100 percent moneyback guarantee. GDC says it believes it to be the best scan tool package available in NZ and it says that Autel is recognised globally by the aftermarket as the fastestgrowing manufacturer with the best price/performance ratio for OEM-level diagnostic products. The MaxiDAS Diagnostic

System is designed to recreate the functionality of the OEM tools used by the franchise dealers, according to GDC. It enables independent workshops to provide complete servicing and diagnostics. The tool has a 7" full colour touch screen and all the features needed by a workshop. GDC says it contains one of the most comprehensive vehicle software packages available, with more than 40 vehicle makes covering Japanese, Korean, European, American and Australian brands. The DS-708 will test engine, transmission, ABS, airbag, immobilisers, body modules,

instrument clusters, climate control, key coding, steering angle sensor calibration, TPS systems and more. The DS-708 has Full OBDII and CAN communication built-in and comes standard with all the plugs and adapters so there are no extra hidden costs, says GDC. The advanced Holden Software is developed by and exclusive to authorised dealers in NZ and Australia. This includes VR to VE key programming, module programming PIM and BCM Linking in VZ, VY, VX, VT, and more. Some of the functions are more advanced than the factory scan tool and also include advanced Opel programming functions according to GDC. An essential item of scan tools from reliable makers that covers a wide range of vehicle makes and models, and can point out the strengths of each particular tool. Using these tools on a regular basis will give the technician confidence in the equipment so usually a fast learning curve will result. Sulco has lower-priced options in its range so it can tailor a scan tool to the buyer’s budget and its experienced staff can also assist when a workshop runs into problems.

With the growth in computer on-board management systems in today’s vehicles monitoring a wide range of vehicle functions, scan tools are proving to be an essential diagnostic tool according to Sulco Tools and Equipment. It says that time has proved that there is not any one scan tool that will cover the complete range of vehicles on NZ roads. While in recent years updated and wider vehicle data is available on scan tools some makers are stronger on selected vehicle makes and models than others. When buying a scan tool Sulco

says it is advisable to purchase from a local supplier that can offer not just the tool but also assistance when it comes to using the tool and understanding the functions. Many purchasers of scan tools sourced overseas through the internet find that updates are not obtainable and no local support is forthcoming. What seemed at first to be a great buy ends up a costly and frustrating experience, according to Sulco. Sulco says it has selected a range

What’s driving LED lighting? Motor Equipment New investigate what is driving the use of LED technology in the work lamp category and the automotive and marine lamp markets. Commercially-driven LED lamps

Based in Pakuranga, Auckland, Hella NZ exported its first LED centre high mounted stop tail lamp (CHMST) in the early 1990s, and it continues today to design and maufacture custom designed units for the OEM such as General Motors in the USA. But the niche that Hella New Zealand has made its own is developing fully sealed and durable energy-efficient LED lighting solutions for both the rigours of the commercial transport market and the harsh environment of the marine and navigation market. Craig Beavis from Hella NZ says replacing bulb lamps with LEDs, be it tail lamps, daytime running lights, driving lamps and/or side marker lamps, makes economic sense for the commercial vehicle market. He says it’s a fit and forget solution, which helps commercial transport operators avoid potential fines, unnecessary downtime, and improve battery life as LED lamps are less power hungry, and that their lower power draw places less strain on the alternator and batteries. It’s a sentiment echoed by Ashdown Ingram category manager Steve Mitchell and marketing specialist Christine St Ange. Ashdown Ingram have also focused on supplying more and more LED-based product such as the new range of Great Whites driving lamps to the heavy commercial and recreational vehicle markets. Regardless of the workplace or application both parties agree that LED lamps offer the automotive, mining, agricultural, engineering, and marine industry a lighting product that provides longevity, economy, and most importantly improved safety and efficiency. Hella says that it uses tough and durable high impact acrylic plastic such as Grilamid in its commercial LED products, rather than polycarbonate, because according to Beavis, it is a UV-sensitive material and will eventually turn opaque in harsh sunlight. Hella also uses optic technology to focus the LED light where it’s needed by using the most efficient design which also results in less heat generation and longer service life.

34

Beavis says that Hella NZ also uses the most applicable type of LED lamps and the least number required to avoid any overheating heat issues in its locally designed and manufactured signal lighting that meets the design standards for the global markets. Moisture is the enemy of any LED

accessory lenses and anti-theft nuts. More importantly, gone are the days of mismatched driving lights (spread beam and pencil beam, or more colloquially spot lamp and flood lamp) because the LED technology in the Great Whites delivers both the distance and

Ashdown Ingram says that when LED technology was first introduced to work lamp applications it saw more than a 60 percent decline in sales of HID work lamps in the first year of LED work lamp sales. The company has now deleted all HID work lamps from its product line-up. Incidentally most HID, halogen

and incandescent lamps contain hazardous waste in the form of mercury, lead, sodium and material. LEDs do not contain any hazardous waste and are completely recyclable. Prime drive technology is leading the way in LED work lamps according to OEX which is a brand available through Ashdown Ingram. This intelligent technology utilises precision optics and enables the light to control its

lamp says Craig Beavis, which is why sealing of the any LED lamp is critical to avoid any water or condensate attacking the internal circuit board which drives the LED. With larger sized LED replacement headlamps, auxiliary driving and work lamps such as The Great White, JW Speaker and OEX ranges supplied by Ashdown Ingram, finned alloy lamp housings are often required to provide a heat sink as thermal management is critical to the long life and light output of these products. The new range of Great White driving lamps offers a 50,000+ hour operating life and Ashdown Ingram says it is a more cost effective option than HID which offers 2500 hours and Halogen which offers 500 hours. Thanks to the installation of Deutz waterproof plugs the Great Whites are also submersible to a depth of three metres, and they are also sold with

LED technology has quickly overtaken halogen and HID technology in the work lamp category, particularly in the space occupied by lights with output of more than 5000 lumens where LED offers similar output to HID but with greater efficiency and far less power use.

NEWS lightiNg fEatUrE own temperature levels. A complex electronic array is implemented to drive the LEDs, resulting in an efficient set of electronics that produce minimal heat. Electronic Thermal Management system is also employed to constantly monitor the core temperature of each LED and adjust the output in real time. This does not use the conventional method of adjusting the current, instead it flashes the LED at a rate much higher than the human eye can detect. OEX says it has recognised that this technology is the future of lighting, which is why they have implemented it in their new OEX LED Work Light range. This range also uses high-grade binning (U2) LEDs. This guarantees quality and ensures perfect colour temperature and high lumen output which makes it a perfect fit for many diverse industries. This range is extremely low on power consumption and provides a colour spectrum that is closest to that of the midday sun, thus minimising any possible fatigue caused by eye strain from low light in the workplace. One of the latest products to arrive from OEX is the new Pit master 60 LED work lamp designed for use in the heavy industrial market as well as being used to upgrade from metal halide and high pressure sodium lights. The Pitmaster 60 LED can be used for heavy vehicle lighting, mobile light towers, drill rig lighting and even lighting for large workshops.

Pit Master 60 LED headlamps

Hella says it has only been a few years that LED technology has been used for exterior lights on passenger vehicles by the OEM, initially being used as interior lights and stop lamps, but now the technology has progressed that all-LED headlamps are quickly becoming more commonplace, replacing xenon and halogen technology. Hella NZ started manufacturing LED combination tail lamps in 2000 for vehicles such as the Cadillac DeVille and the first road legal all-LED headlamp was presented to the market by Hella Europe in 2003. From 2004 LEDs were used in the front section of production vehicles such as the headlights of the W12 Audi A8 and as a module in the Audi S6

and Porsche 911. Hella produced its first all-LED stoplight in 2005 for the Golf V Plus while the 2006 Audi R8 was the first standard production vehicle to use an all-LED headlamp and all lighting functions on that vehicle were provided by LEDs from 2008. Hella also provided the all-LED headlamps for the 2009 Cadillac Escalade Platinum model. In 2010 all-LED headlamps from Hella became available for the Audi A7 and A8 (including AFS function) and in 2011 the Audi A6 was equipped with all-LED AFS headlamps.

The benefits of upgrading

According to JW Speaker Corporation, LED lamps are more durable than Halogen and HID because of their solid state construction. It says they are the perfect choice for vehicle applications where bumps, curves and potholes would cause traditional lamps to fail prematurely. Where HID headlamps have the tendency to produce electromagnetic interference (EMI) causing a variety of complications for both the OEM and the aftermarket says JW Speaker

Wheelans takes on JAC distribution WMC Group in Australia has appointed the Wheelans Motor Group as master franchisee for the JAC and Higer brands.

The new arrangement, effective from 1st July 2012, will enable WMC to increase sales for the Higer and JAC brands in New Zealand by providing strong infrastructure, expertise and customer service through the Wheelans Motor Group and its existing dealer network. Phil Wheelans will take direct control of the Higer and JAC master franchises in New Zealand, while the separate but wholly-owned Phil Wheelans Truck and Van Sales will continue selling and servicing Fuso trucks and other brands under separate management. According to managing director of the WMC Group, Jason Pecotic, the move is a logical one that will enable the company’s commercial vehicle brands to be taken to the next level here in New Zealand. “New Zealand is an important market to us and the appointment of Phil and his team at Wheelans Motor Group as master franchisee will ensure we have the infrastructure and the personnel on the ground to service all of our current and potential customers properly,” says Jason Pecotic. “In the short time it has been a dealer for WMC, Wheelans Motor Group has shown that it has the level of commitment and expertise needed to make Higer, JAC or any other brands we bring to NZ a success, he says. The Wheelans Motor Group has been a Higer bus and JAC truck dealer since January 2012 and has a long, distinguished history in New

Zealand as a Daimler Group truck dealer selling Mercedes Benz, Fuso, Sterling and Freightliner. The company also operates a large-scale truck and trailer rental business. According to Phil Wheelans, the opportunity to sign on as the master franchisee for WMC in New Zealand was too good to pass up. “I have been to China and visited the JAC, Higer and Cummins plants as well as the recent Beijing Auto Show and it is clear China is going to play a key role in the world's transport needs for some time to come,” says Phil Wheelans. “JAC trucks are a vehicle that will do the job well at a great price using known technology with Cummins, Wabco and other recognised suppliers and our experience has shown us the enormous potential for the New Zealand market,” he says. Phil Whelan and his team will take all responsibility for operations in New Zealand including sales and marketing, parts distribution and dealer management, reporting to Shannon Taylor, WMC Group General Manager. Wheelans will also be making further investment in both parts and vehicle inventory to ensure support for all New Zealand customers no matter what brand they purchase. While Wheelans Motor Group is the master franchisee, the existing WMC dealer sales network in NZ will be maintained and although WMC Group will no longer maintain a direct factory office in New

Zealand it maintains the distribution rights to Higer and JAC for that country. Phil Wheelans established his transport operation 25 years ago with the dream of establishing a onestop-shop for the transport industry providing one point of contact to service every need from truck and trailer rental and purchase, to custom manufacture and servicing. Wheelans Motor Group now incorporates six operations servicing all these areas of the transport industry. The company operates integrated businesses in truck sales, truck and trailer hire, engineering, and vehicle service including painting and laser wheel alignment in one-stop sales and service hubs. “We are a true multi-service business not just a series of companies operating under one umbrella,” says Phil Wheelans. “We work with customers with a range of needs finding customised solutions that might involve one or all of our operations. “For example, a customer might need to remodel some of its existing fleet, buy new trucks to expand the business, or hire a specialist trailer unit for a particular job, and we can deliver all of this in one seamless experience,” he says. Wheelans Motor Group is headquartered in the Wellington suburb of Seaview and operates branches in Hamilton, Palmerston North and Christchurch. REAdER REPly 0120637 www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz

Jerry cans are back Griffiths Equipment says the new European-made Pro Quip models it has recently introduced to the New Zealand market are a new take on the traditional cans that older motorists will probably be familiar with. “Most people have a fuel can at home in the garage, either for the car, 4WD or boat, and these days they are mostly constructed from plastic, but these have a limited lifespan and should be replaced before they wear and leak,” says sales manager Bruce Walker. “The latest metal cans are inherently safer, having undergone a series of stringent tests and also meet defence forces specification. They’ve been dropped, and subjected to fire and corrosion, passing with flying colours – they are very tough and durable.”

All the Pro Quip metal jerry cans are designed with a unique 12mm square breather pipe with a wide funnel opening in the spout to ensure smoother pouring of fuel. They come with a quality bayonet closure that is protected by a locking pin, so the cap cannot open accidentally if knocked over. Mr Walker says the Pro Quip metal jerry cans have been pressure tested up to 415kpa to ensure they are leakproof in any position. And they’ve been given a special coating on the inside to prevent rusting, which means they are also suitable for holding water. They are certified to Australia/NZ Standard 2906:2001 and meet UN approval and TUV standards. And they look nothing like the drab old cans of the past, now being made in 10 fashionable colours, including red, orange, green, blue, grey and brown.

The Pro Quip metal jerry cans are available in five, 10 and 20 litre sizes and are designed to fit standard recreational vehicle racks, which Griffith Equipment is also distributing, along with a range of other accessories including a separate pourer and replaceable rubber seals. To make sure that motorists and boat owners know exactly what type of fuel is in the can, Griffiths Equipment has also released a new range of ID tags. The coloured tags can be purchased readyprinted with the name of the contents, such as 2-stroke, petrol, oil, diesel etc, or there is an unprinted clear label that can be written on. Mr Walker says the pre-printed labels do not fade and are an ideal solution to ensuring the right fuel is used in the right engine. REAdER REPly 0120638

First half million for E-Hubo After three years of operation the first ERoad electronic hubodometer is past the half million mark and heading for 1 million kms. Fitted in late 2010 to a reefer combination belonging to Jim and Sue Banks of BHK Transport, the Ehubo has served in contract line haul for AF Logistics for most of its life. “We used to chew through a mechanical hubo about once a year” says Jim. “But to be honest – apart from using it to fill out the driver’s logbook - we haven’t had to take a look at the Ehubo since the day it was fitted.” Durability has been a consistent reason cited for heavy vehicle operators to move to the electronic version from a mechanical hubdometer, however there is a significant trend with a growing number of fleets also citing a wider range of

compliance motivations. National Mini Fuels have commenced fitting ERoad throughout their country-wide on-site fuelling fleet: citing health and safety (HSE) management as a key reason. “We are working with some of the possibilities that are coming about with ERoad and Z (owner of Mini Fuels) which goes beyond the conventional advantages of compliance, road user charges and efficiency and delves into driver behaviour and HSSE,” says Z Energy HSSE manager Rex Middlebeek. Waikato’s Moorey Contractors have utilised the system to meet the reporting requirements of the new RUC Act. “ERoad’s system has become even more

valuable with the ability to manage our servicing and maintenance. The automatic notifications helps us to easily maintain our levels of compliance and run that side of our business more efficiently,” says owner Steve Moorey. “We had the ERoad system installed in our fleet in January,” says Blair Keelty McNeil Distribution transport manager. “From a Health and Safety prospective it enables us to look at idling times and over speed events for trucks. From this information we can look at where we can make savings in fuel usage and look at driver behaviour on the road. This information is passed onto the drivers and gives them a goal to work towards.” REAdER REPly 0120638A

New Hybrid Canter launched in Japan

Daimler Truck subsidiary, Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC), has launched the Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid truck in Japan. The light duty truck, which celebrated its world premiere at the Tokyo Motor Show in November 2011,

will also be introduced by Fuso in Europe and other international markets in the third quarter of this year. The predecessor to this new model was launched in 2006 and this particular right-hand drive hybrid vehicle sold more than 1,200 units in markets such as Japan, Australia, New Zealand' Ireland, and Hong Kong. The positive response it received from those markets led to the decision to offer the second-generation model in both a right- and left-hand drive version. The Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid is also the world’s first commercial vehicle that combines a duonic dual-clutch transmission with a hybrid engine. As a result, MFTBC says the vehicle boasts high fuel efficiency, while also combining the comfort of an automatic transmission with the economy of a manual. “The new Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid will enable us to further extend our leading position with regard to

fuel efficiency and overall economy,” says MFTBC president Albert Kirchmann. “We continue to invest heavily in alternative drive technologies in order to ensure that we are iprepared for stricter emission regulations worldwide.” The new hybrid truck’s nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions are 30 percent lower than the limits set by Japan’s current emission standard (JP09), which has been in effect since 2010. When compared to the current Fuso Canter with a conventional diesel engine, the hybrid version uses more than 25 percent less fuel during a Japanese driving cycle. The new hybrid truck is the latest innovation to come out of the Global Hybrid Center (GHC) in Kawasaki, Japan. The GHC, which serves as Daimler Trucks’ global center of competence for the development of hybrid vehicles, manages and synchronizes the hybrid related activities of all truck brands within the Daimler Group. Steering in the right direction

In 2010, global CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels rose by more than five percent, according to the International Energy Agency. At the same time, the vehicle industry dedicates huge amounts of resources to reducing CO2 by just a few percentage points. However, minor adjustments to vehicles can have a surprisingly large effect on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, according to a study by Volvo Trucks and Michelin. Recent research by Volvo and Michelin shows that checking and correcting the tyres and wheels on a truck has a significant impact on emissions without the need for major outlay or new ways of working. The study shows that having the right tyres, tyre pressure and wheel alignment can reduce fuel

consumption – and therefore CO2 emissions – by up to 15 percent. If the environmental incentive is not enough, in financial terms that could be a saving up to $16,000 (€8,000) per vehicle per year. “We know that wheel alignment, tyre type and tyre pressure all have a major impact on fuel consumption,” says Volvo Trucks area manager ArneHelge Andreassen. “There is a lack of awareness in the transport industry about the importance of checking tyres and wheel alignment, on both the truck and the trailer. At our dealers, we can help haulage companies check the entire rig and correct any problems. If everyone did this, it would have a significant impact on carbon dioxide emissions.” Volvo Trucks and Michelin decided to produce statistical data on just how much wheel alignment, tyre pressure and rolling resistance affect fuel consumption and therefore CO2 emissions. In a two-week long, 1000km test, a rig with optimal tyres, tyre pressures and wheel alignment was compared with a vehicle featuring different wheel alignments and tyre parameters. The tests were carried out on a track and in a workshop under the watchful eye of SP (the Technical Research Institute of Sweden). The trucks were equipped not only with fuel gauges but also with special instruments that monitored exact speed, tyre wear, tyre pressure and rolling resistance.

Guarantee your next 11 issues of SubScribe on-line

The test engineers made adjustments in the test results for factors such as wind, rain and temperature. “All the conditions tested were realistic, and no exaggerations were allowed,” says Andreassen. “Real life is bad enough. Diesel consumption increases dramatically if the wheels are not entirely parallel. And this applies to all vehicles, for construction and longhaul operations too.” Analysis of the test results reveals that there can be a difference of as much as 14.5 percent in fuel consumption depending on how the wheels are aligned and equipped. Choice of tyre can cut consumption by as much as 11 percent; correct tyre inflation brings a reduction of 1 percent, while proper wheel alignment can cut fuel consumption by 2.5 percent. Michelin technical manager Jacques de Giancomoni says that one-third of fuel consumption stems from the tyres’ rolling resistance. “Having the right tyres is of paramount importance,” he says. “And checking tyre pressure – which has a significant effect on fuel consumption – is also important.” Of course correcting the tyre pressure and wheel alignment will not stop climate change, but as commercial traffic accounts for 30 to 40 percent of total carbon dioxide emissions from road transport, it is another small but significant step towards a lower carbon future. http://everydropcounts.volvotrucks.com REAdER REPly 0120639

Schaeffler renews MKR sponsorship Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket has renewed its sponsorship of Mario Kress’s MKR Technology Truck Racing Team for the 2012 season. As it did for the previous two years, Schaeffler is offering support with technical expertise from LuK – in the form of a racing clutch and power steering pump in all three MKR Team racing trucks. “Thanks to Mario Kress’s MKR Technology Truck Racing Team, we’ve found the perfect partner for our sponsorship,” said Schaeffler marketing communications director Rouven Daniel. “Dynamic performance, precision, speed, reliability and innovation characterise MKR, just as they do for Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket. We are both driven to achieve outstanding results.” The team remains unchanged for the 2012 for MKR with the younger Czech driver Adam Lacko, racing alongside the two experienced racers Markus Oestreich (Germany) and Markus Bösiger (Switzerland).

“The test program has been successfully completed and our team did an outstanding job,” says MKR Technology Truck Racing Team Mario Kress when describing preparations for the season’s first race in Istanbul in May. According to Scaheffler, Mario Kress has actively participated in truck racing for more than 23 years and is its most successful engineer. This year MKR will take to the track in three identical trucks. “Of course, our competitors did their

homework too and there are always small things that still need improving. But we have a clear objective, to win back the Team Championship and to continue to improve our individual driver results,” says Mario Kress. Schaeffler is providing optimal power transmission and precision for the 2012 FIA European Truck Racing Champonship with its LuK racing clutch and power steering pump. As they did last year, the Aftermarket experts head to the race tracks with state-of-theart technologies. While normal clutch

pressure plates are designed to take 2500 to 3000 Nm of torque, a pressure plate for truck racing must be able to transfer 5,200 to 5500 Nm of torque. The racing clutch used in the MKR racing trucks has a pressure plate that takes even higher torque than this – it is designed for up to 6000 Nm. In addition to this, the clutch discs of the MKR trucks have sintered clutch linings which are able to withstand high friction and to resist the high temperatures that accompany it. The LuK power steering pump provides precise and easy steering during racing, even when making quick directional changes. Developed specially for these racing trucks, the power steering pump delivers a 15 to 20 percent higher flow-rate performance compared to standard power steering pumps used in production vehicles. Besides providing technical support for the 2012 FIA ETRC, the Schaeffler brands LuK (clutch and transmission experts) and FAG (experts for precision roller bearings) will be prominently displayed on the MKR racing trucks, the race clothing of the drivers and team members, along with the hospitality areas of every race. The season begins this month (May) in Turkey. After stops in Misano (I), Albacete (E), Nogaro (F), Donington (UK), Nürburg (D), Smolensk (RUS), Most (CZ), Zolder (B) and Jarama (E), the racing season will end at Le Mans (F) on 13-14 October 2012. The full racing series calendar, results and information about the team, along with an extensive service area with images can be viewed at www.schaeffleraftermarket.de/races. REAdER REPly 0120640

Which insurer is the best? Collision repairers have placed insurance company performance in the spotlight with a recent survey, which highlights those insurers who focus on quality vehicle repair rather than just price. The Collision Repair Association (CRA) conducted its annual survey on the service delivery of 15 insurance companies around New Zealand. Repairers were asked to rate each company on speed of resolution, price and overall service. Results this year show that once again, Medical Assurance is the best-rated niche market insurer, with AMI and Vero ranked second and third respectively. AAI climbed four places after a review of how repairers are paid for their work. Zurich Auto, which featured low on the index in 2011 rated last this year. Overall, scores were down from last year’s survey, falling from an average of 2.87 to 2.84 (on a scale of 1 to 4, from poor to excellent). This indicates repairers are finding business increasingly difficult, battling increasing costs, low pay rates and a decreasing market. CRA general manager Neil Pritchard says low-cost repairs have been an ongoing pressure for the industry recently.

“Insurers have not recognised the increasing cost pressure repairers are under,” says Pritchard. “CRA members are obligated to stand behind the quality of their workmanship; however, because the industry is unregulated, others are less so. Our job is to protect the interest of our repairers and their ability to give

consumers the best outcome. “Consumers understand that ‘you get what you pay for’, but the choice to pay for better quality and safety has been taken away from them under the current system. Instead, those decisions are made by their insurance company, which is focused on making a profit.

“Consumers do still have a choice, though, about which insurer they select. The aim of this survey is to help them make more informed decisions and raise awareness of what goes on behind the scenes after they make a claim – which, after all, is why we insure in the first place,” he says. The rust annihilator Auckland-based panelbeating supplier R.A. Johnstone has recently introduced high solid permanent RustSeal – the rust annihilator from Australian manufacturer KBS Coatings – to the local collision repair and restoration market.

R.A Johnstone general manager Cameron Head says the company offers complete kits of RustSeal product to the panelbeating and restoration industries including motorcycle fuel tank kits and chassis repair kits. It is a three-step process: first, penetrate the surface to remove all contaminants, secondly, eradicate all metal contaminants by etching the surface and finally, annihilate the rust by sealing the surface with a single component resistant finish to stop corrosion reoccurring. Cameron says that RustSeal is a single component moisture-curing urethane which is specifically formulated to stop and encapsulate existing rust and corrosion. According to KBS Coatings, its RustSeal product

accomplishes this in a number of unique ways. Because the coating has a low initial viscosity it wets and penetrates the surface to the origin of the rust. By using its curing mechanism, KBS Coatings says the coating combines with atmospheric moisture to start the process of the resins expanding and interlocking within the rust pores. According to KBS Coatings this unique process literally enables to the coating to galvanise itself to the substrate becoming an integral part of the surface. It completely seals the surface, totally blocking all the pores and preventing all access of moisture, air and water vapour. KBS Coatings says that not only is the coating tough and flexible, it is highly resistant to mechanical abrasion and impact, guarding against abuse and therefore keeping the substrate completely sealed and the moisture permanently locked out. It is also highly resistant to most aggressive chemicals including most acids, alkalis, salt, abrasive chemicals, fertilisers, coal dust, solvents, oil and other refined petroleum products. Additionally KBS Coatings says that no mixing ratios are required, all that is needed is a stir and the product is ready for use. Once cured it says that RustSeal can then be top-coated with any system preferred by the repairer or restorer. REAdER REPly 0120641A www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz

The start of race one at the Hamilton V8 Supercars.

Farewell to the Hamilton V8 Supercars… Bernard Carpinter reports on the last hurrah for Hamilton…

The Hamilton street races in April might be the last time we see the Aussie V8 Supercars racing in New Zealand. That was the last meeting in Hamilton and it is unlikely that any other city would now wish to stage a street event, given that it cost the Hamilton council so much money. The V8 Supercars company always wanted a street event in New Zealand, but now if it is to continue racing in this country, its options are two permanent circuits – Pukekohe, where the Supercars raced for seven years before the move to Hamilton, and the new Hampton Downs track in the north Waikato. Both would need significant upgrades to meet the required standards – Hampton Downs needs extending to its planned full length and more facilities – but both could be eligible for a million dollars in government money earmarked to support major sporting events. V8 Supercars is a commercial company and will make its decision on commercial grounds. If the Supercars do not return, the Hamilton meeting was a fine send-off. The weather was unusually good and the racing was spectacular. The only thing missing was a Kiwi victory, especially as the fans had great memories of Shane Van Gisbergen scoring his breakthrough V8 Supercar

42

www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz

victory here last year. The young Kiwi is now a genuine championship contender, as he showed by taking a great second place in the top-10 shootout for race one. Race one “The Giz”, as he is popularly known, made a great start and took the lead heading into turn one. But as he braked he took a hard hit from behind from David Reynolds, who has been very fast this year in one of the Ford Performance Racing Falcons. Somehow Van Gisbergen managed to scramble round the first corner but he was losing places and then further contact saw him pushed against the wall. Not only did he get passed by several cars, he came out of it all with bent steering which affected the rest of the race. Officials allowed Reynolds to continue without a drive-through penalty, but later deducted 25 championship points for hitting the Kiwi. Perennial crowd favourite Greg Murphy got off to a bad start when his Kelly team Commodore hit the wall in practice – his own fault, he admitted. Fabian Coulthard drove very well to be top Kiwi in his Brad Jones Racing Commodore, with finishes of ninth and fifth. That team has come on this year, with Coulthard’s teammate Jason Bright also very fast at times.

In recent seasons the Triple Eight team has been the dominant player, with star drivers Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes always out front in the bright red Vodafone cars. But this year the Ford Performance Racing team has really hit its straps with Will Davison and Mark “Frosty” Winterbottom winning race after race. Reynolds is also racing an FPR Falcon, although his car is entered by Rod Nash. Davison started sixth for race one but dodged the carnage at the first two corners and came out in second. “The first lap was awesome for me,” he said. “Obviously starting sixth wasn’t ideal but I knew we were quicker than that. Getting through the traffic was going to be the tricky thing, but popping out second from sixth was obviously fantastic.” Garth Tander led for the Holden Racing Team but Davison closed in, followed him closely for a long time, and pulled off a clean pass at the end of the main straight around half-distance. After that his lead was secure all the way to the flag. Later Whincup also managed to pass Tander, the two Holdens touching side-to-side through a corner as Whincup made a forceful move that Tander reckoned was fair enough. Lowndes was fourth ahead of Rick Kelly, Steve Owen, former champion James Coutney, Michael Caruso, Coulthard and Russell “The Enforcer” Ingall. Van Gisbergen was only 22nd after

designed, he added. “A good car will bend in the right spots. It used to be that if you hit a wall you’d break the engine.” In the NZV8 support races, Aussie Jason Bargwanna was the overall winner which made him the inaugural winner of the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy, commemorating the popular Kiwi driver who died of cancer last year. V8 SuperTourers Meanwhile New Zealand’s new domestic series, V8 SuperTourers, successfully completed its first three meetings at Hampton Downs, Ruapuna and Manfeild. Round-one winner Greg Murphy was unable to race at Ruapuna as he was recovering from surgery on his back, which had been injured in a big crash at Adelaide. Fabian Coulthard proved himself a super-sub as he stood in for his fellow Kiwi and won the round with two victories and a second place in the Holden. John McIntyre won the feature race for Ford. Jonny Reid is best known here for twice guiding New Zealand to second place in the A1GP “World cup of Motorsport” but he has also been a top Porsche racer on both sides of the Tasman. Now he is showing that he can race V8s just as well, and he won the Manfeild round with two wins and a fifth.

Fabian Coulthard was the top Kiwi in both races at Hamilton, driving a Holden for Brad Jones Racing

Murphy won the final race there, when the track started wet but dried out, and Reid’s car did not have the right set-up for the conditions. The control Hankook wet-weather tyres got chewed up as the track dried but they showed impressive endurance to keep going through the 35 laps. That put Reid into the lead of the series, ahead of McIntyre, Murphy (who missed round two!), Kayne Scott and impressive young Ant Pedersen. Later in the year the V8 SuperTourers will contest three endurance races, with several star international drivers expected to take co-driver seats. REAdER REPly 0120642

needing an extra pit stop to fix loose body panels, while Murphy was forced to retire. Winterbottom and Reynolds both incurred damage through contact with the big tyres at the controversial chicane; Winterbottom dropped right back, and Reynolds retired. Race two The two main FPR cars on the front row, Davison ahead of Winterbottom. But Winterbottom won the drag to the first corner and gradually established a lead that looked certain to give him a comfortable victory. But towards the end Whincup caught up and he was clearly fired up to go for victory. During the last two laps Whincup touched Winterbottom’s car and the wall, and just managed to control a big slide. The Holden was faster at this stage of the race but Winterbottom managed to fend him off and score a double for FPR. It was a fitting finale – the classic Ford-Holden battle, fought tooth and nail. Davison held on to third, comfortably clear of Lowndes and Coulthard, and came away leading the championship by 21 points from Whincup. Lee Holdsworth was sixth and the top 10 were completed by Reynolds, Tony DÁlberto, Todd Kelly and Van Gisbergen who said his car was not as fast on the Sunday as it had been the day before. Murphy was 17th. Whincup’s performance was a testament to the abilities of the Triple Eight team – he had crashed hard in qualifying and the team repaired the extensive damage in a little more than two hours. “We just finished the last adjustment on the grid – the steering rack was loose,” Whincup said. The fast fix also showed how well current Supercars were

Jonny Reid is enjoying racing success on both sides of the Tasman.

Will Davison won race one at Hamilton and is in top form this year with the Ford Performance Racing Falcon.

Former A1GP star Jonny Reid took the lead in the V8 SuperTourer series with victory at Manfeild.

Masons win Rally Otago

The Masons in action

Victory on the recent Rally of Otago has taken Richard Mason and his co-driving wife Sara into the lead of the national rally championship. The Masons from Masterton won both heats of the event in their Subaru WRX STI to finish more than two minutes in front of Chris West with Emma Gilmour completing the podium in third place. But the pair did not have things all their own way. Chris West (Timaru) pushed the Masons hard on Sunday’s heat and led going into the event’s longest stage of 45 kms, until he had to stop and change a puncture, losing nearly two minutes. “There were some crazy fast sections on the Saturday stages,” said Mason. “It was a real challenge to drive at ten tenths, even if the overall average speed was not too high.” The Masons established an early lead of 35 seconds when they won the three Friday night stages, which they extended to 53 seconds by the end of Saturday, finishing in front of West and Rotorua’s Sloan Cox. “It was a good fight with Westy today and the result has put us right back into contention in the championship,” said Mason. Emma Gilmour’s bid to win her home round of the national rally championship will have to wait another year. She suffered a stalled engine in a ford on Friday night, inconsistent brakes and an intercom that cut out – and only finished fourth on Saturday in her WRX STI. On Sunday she drove to make sure of more finishing points as she had lost too much time to challenge Mason and West for the major overall positions. She finished Sunday’s stages just over a minute behind Mason with West third for the day after his puncture. But the Dunedin-based driver was still left with two

Emma Gilmour gave it her all

positives to take away from an often frustrating run on the Otago Rally. The first of those positives was a podium finish, earned despite her slip to fourth place when the rally concluded on Saturday afternoon. The second was the fact that points accrued for her eventual third placing on the event were sufficient to move her from third to second place in the national rally championship point standings. Nineteen-year-old Alex Kelsey, who led the series going into the Otago event, had a high-speed crash on Saturday morning which destroyed his WRX STI, seeing him slip down the points standings to third. Lester joins McIntyre

John McIntyre has selected Jono Lester to be his co-driver in the V8SuperTourers’ three-round endurance race series, which runs from September to November this year. McIntyre says the 22-year-old New Zealander has an impressive pedigree of success and a sound knowledge of the three circuits where the endurance races will run. “Jono Lester is the perfect partner for me in the #47 JMR Falcon; he’s a talented Kiwi on the rise,” says McIntyre. “As a teenage he won races, rounds and pole positions in the New Zealand Porsche GT3 Cup and then went onto be fifth fastest in 2010 Porsche Supercup world final in Italy. This year he has been chosen to drive a 6.2-litre V8 Mercedes Benz SLS in the Super Taikyu endurance series in Japan. So for me he clearly has the raw speed we require and now he is getting high-level experience in Japan to complement his speed; it’s an easy choice.” Lester says he is excited by McIntyre’s invitation to join him as the team’s enduro driver. “John runs, in my opinion, the best operation in the championship, on and off the track, and he is totally professional about his motor racing. So to partner John, whom I rate very highly, is such a wonderful opportunity for me,” says Lester. Lester says the endurance racing experience he’s presently gaining in Japan is proving invaluable. “The six-round Super Taikyu endurance series features three to four-hour long races with a field of 45 cars of all speeds and marques, and the key to winning comes just as much down to traffic handling as raw speed,” says Lester. “All of the FIA GT3-spec cars in the class I contest feature at least one former Super GT 300 and 500 championship winner in their driver line-up, so there are some really competitive benchmarks here.” McIntyre highlights Lester’s fitness as another essential element for the JMR V8SuperTourer endurance drive. “We anticipate the two-driver endurance races will be more like long sprint races, due to the tyres and the balance of the cars,” says McIntyre. “So Jono’s incredibly high level of fitness adds to his credibility, as does the fact he knows all three circuits – Taupo, Pukekohe and Ruapuna – extremely well.” REAdER REPly 0120644A

Fogg and Gaunt join SuperTourers Another two drivers officially joined the new V8 SuperTourer series when current NZV8 champion Angus Fogg and Tasman Motorsport’s Daniel Gaunt undertook successful shakedown testing of their new V8 SuperTourers at Hampton Downs ahead of the fourth round. Remarkably, Fogg’s car was built in ten days with an ‘all hands on deck’ approach by him and his mechanics. Tasman Motorsports had longer to build their car, but getting out in time for the final round of the sprint half of the championship still represents a considerable achievement. It brings the size of the new field to 18 cars, and with Fogg and Gaunt in the hot seats, confirms the V8 SuperTourer series is now the premier V8 class in New Zealand motorsport when it comes to driving talent as well as car lap times. “I want to thank everyone, it’s been an incredible two weeks,” says Fogg. The new car – a Holden V8ST – will be backed by Hydraulink along with Property Tutors, Supercharge Batteries, Segedins Auto Spares, Moselle Panel & Paint, Porter Group, iSign it and PPG. Gaunt will be running a Ford Falcon V8ST for Tasman Motorsports Group, one of the biggest names in US motor sport and run by Kiwi Steve Horne. Gaunt tested Greg Murphy’s car earlier in the season and is delighted to be behind the wheel of the Tasman car. “The car looks just amazing,” he said. “The attention to detail on the finishing of it is a real credit to the team. Everything has had an awful lot of TLC put into it and I’m really excited about getting out there on Friday to carry on with the initial set-up. It’s going to be a great weekend and I’m very, very happy to be a part of it.” Daniel Gaunt
