Ninjas take on Variety Bash Comedian Ewen “The Westie” Gilmour and his reptilian sidekick are to participate in the annual Variety Bash themed as Overage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The team will be travelling in a green 1983 Mitsubishi Delica van affectionately known as The Turtle, so finalising their costumes was an easy decision. “A slight tweak on the name was all it took to launch the once-teenage turtles into 2012 and middle-agedness,” says Ewen Gilmour. “Like the original turtles, I’m not getting any younger so I’m going to play their greying sensei, Splinter, while my travelling companion will be an older incarnation of one of the heroes in a halfshell,” said Ewen. Recognised as the NZ Comedian of the Decade (2000-2010), Ewen is also a Variety Ambassador and will be participating in his 12th Variety Bash. “This year is a little different as I’m Bashing as part of a private team, rather than a corporate group. Therefore we’re on a mission to find one or two significant sponsors to partner with The Turtles. “We’re willing to consider any offers and I’ll also include a performance at an end of year function or staff event if the right level of support is forthcoming.” The team is also running an auction on TradeMe,

Lifting the bar Smarter robots are helping Best Bars Ltd, to lift performance and create higher quality products in record time. While Best Bars has used robotic welders and other automated processes, such as plasma cutting, for some time, it is now employing new, smart systems to make it all work seamlessly together and with spectacular results, according to manufacturing manager Clifford Jackson. “Set-up times have reduced dramatically and that makes a big difference in terms of flexibility – it means we can be more efficient and provide a better service to our customers,” says Mr Jackson. Systems have been enhanced with smarter robot welders that can be programmed to virtually eliminate down time, produce a higher quality and more precise product. The robots have increased functionality compared to previous generation welders and are able to deliver more consistent products. This investment in automation allows Best Bars to offset cost imposts similar to those faced by all manufacturing businesses, while continuing to provide customers with safety critical component at an affordable price. “Welding is critical in products such as tow bars,” says Mr Jackson. “If it isn’t done correctly it can cause issues and delays throughout the
manufacturing process, as well as affecting performance and therefore safety.” Upon completion of the current investment programme in mid-2012, around 85 percent of Best Bars production will be robotically welded. With towbars being a safety critical component, this provides customers with the knowledge that their Best Bars product is supported by the best in design, testing and manufacturing processes. “Although a person can weld in the same time, a robot can do it consistently to specification every time. Our people have been retrained in areas such as quality control, which also has a positive impact on health and safety in the factory and the engagement of our staff.” The new smart system at Best Bars incorporates a process known as Single-Minute Exchange of Die (SMED), which is one of the lean production methods for reducing waste in a manufacturing process. It provides a rapid and efficient way of converting a manufacturing process from running the current product to running the next product. This rapid changeover is key to reducing production lot sizes and thereby improving flow, says Mr Jackson. It’s yet another example of how Best Bars is adopting latest technology and production systems to keep ahead of the competition and maintain its

relevance in the NZ market, especially at a time when manufacturing in New Zealand is under enormous pressure. Tomorrow’s batteries today Bosch has invested a 50 percent stake in the groundbreaking battery development company LiMotive with a view to supporting the German-Korean organisation’s futuristic battery projects. Bosch will bring its unrivalled automotive electrical and software expertise to the LiMotive organisation, supporting the battery developer as it works toward President Jingun Lee’s ambitious goal of “actively shaping the future of electromobility”. LiMotive was formed in 2008 and has since worked intensively on innovative lithium-ion battery systems with the primary aim of dominating the electric vehicle market, which is set to grow progressively in the coming years. Bosch has already demonstrated its battery system expertise through the development of its own electric vehicle systems and power tool battery technologies, and this is the primary reason that the automotive technology leader will make the perfect partner to LiMotive and its other 50 percent
shareholder Samsung. The success of Bosch’s financial and technological investments are already having a positive impact on LiMotive’s sales, with order books already full with big names, including BMW and Chrysler LLC and Fiat Group both signing on. BMW’s i3

all-electric vehicle will hit series production in 2013 and Chrysler LLC and Fiat Group’s 500EV is set to do the same – both vehicles will utilise LiMotive’s technology. These lithium-ion batteries are primarily aiming for higher energy density. Today’s standard lithiumion batteries have an approximate capacity of 22 kWh, weigh around 220 kg, and occupy considerable vehicle space. LiMotive’s batteries aim to double this standard energy density level and make a driving range of 200 km possible. Their lifespan will be up to 300,000 km with an active operating time of 8,000 hours. “We will get there by optimising the materials in the cell’s chemistry – for instance with new cathodes, innovative separators and electrolytes,” says Mr Lee. The LiMotive project strengthens
the entire Bosch Batteries programme by ensuring Bosch’s overall battery range is future-proof. Bosch says it is leading the charge toward truly green vehicles, supported by futuristic battery technology. Bosch is even implementing solutions right down to the servicing and repair of electric vehicles. Its global Bosch Car Service Network, spanning over 14,000 workshops in 147 countries, will not only be able to perform service and diagnostic procedures on all-electric vehicle in the future, but will also be able to remove, replace and recycle their batteries. It all forms a complete solution, created by progressive thinking and active investments in technology and ingenuity. Heavy duty suspension from All Euro Parts An independent European car specialist, All Euro Parts Ltd, has just been appointed the master distributor in New Zealand for Meyle heavy-duty automotive suspension parts. Changes to give way rules At 5am on Sunday 25 March, two of the give way rules are changing to make New Zealand’s roads safer. Whether you drive, walk, cycle or ride, you’ll need to know about the changes to stay safe on our roads. Change 1: The left-turn versus rightturn rule
This new rule will require all traffic turning right to give way to all vehicles coming from the opposite direction and turning left. Facing no signs or signals Facing the same signs or signals
This new rule will apply at crossroads, T-intersections and driveways where two vehicles are both facing no signs or signals or the same signs or signals. Think: If you’re turning right, give way. Change 2: Uncontrolled T-intersections
The new rule will require all traffic turning right from a terminating road (bottom of the T) with no signs or signals, to give way to all vehicles on the continuing road (top of the T). Think: Top of the T goes before me. This change brings the rules into line with T-intersections with Stop or Give

Way signs on the terminating road. This change will also apply at driveways including public driveways such as at a supermarket or hospital. Vehicles should continue to give way to pedestrians on a footpath, or cyclists and pedestrians on a cycle path or shared path. Other give way rules remain the same
Not all of the give way rules are changing – only the two we’ve mentioned. Traffic signs and signals are there to show you what you need to do so you should continue to obey these. If you’re turning, you’ll still need to give way to all vehicles not turning. If all other give way rules (and signs and signals) don’t determine who gives way, give way to vehicles coming from your right. There is no change at roundabouts. Why are the rules changing?
Overall, the give way rule changes will reduce the level of judgement needed in complex and dynamic traffic environments, and are expected to promote smoother traffic flow and improve safety.

Revved up 2012 Automotive Week A commercial focus on Australia’s aftermarket performance, racing and tuning products highlighted 2012 Australian Automotive Week, held in Melbourne from March 11 to 18. Supported by the Victorian Government, the 2012 Australian Automotive Week include a new programme to showcase Australian-designed and manufactured high performance accessories, equipment, parts and tools. Timed to capitalise on the Formula one Australian Grand Prix, a full calendar of industry events organised by the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) created opportunities for local companies to showcase their technologies to both the local and international markets. AAAA senior manager Ben Bartlett said the industry welcomed the Victorian Government’s support for the aftermarket sector of the Australian automotive industry. “Australia’s automotive aftermarket contributes more $8 billion a year to economic activity and employs 300,000 people. Prevent stress with INA parts Load changes, stop-and-go traffic, frost, heat and dirt all affect belt drive components which are one of the most heavily stressed parts in the engine compartment. And when they fail, they cause severe damage. If the timing belt drive is affected, this will cause serious damage during operation, including engine breakdown. In the accessory drive, defective components lead to immediate front-end accessory failure and in the worst case to an engine breakdown. This is why INA experts recommend making a routine check of the belt drives during every garage visit. Depending on the age, mileage and specified replacement intervals, it may be necessary to replace the belt drive system, especially the belt, prematurely – in particular, if it is visibly damaged. “When buying a used car, its age, price and mileage are major criteria for distinguishing between normal wear and tear and material defects. The fact that the belt was torn before it had reached the replacement interval specified by the manufacturer does not justify the assumption that the

defect was not there when the car was handed over and that it was not caused by wear and tear. Manufacturers’ specifications are not legally binding in so far as their non-observance does not give rise to a material defect. Preventive maintenance is the key word! Repairers and car owners must become more sensitive to the safetyrelevance of timing drive and FEAD components. Stocking up for M3 When Greg Murphy, Paul Manuel and up-and-coming racer Richard Moore decided to set up their brand new performance car workshop, known as M3, they wanted it to be state-of-the-art in everything from tools and equipment to fixtures and fittings. Even the stainless steel handrails leading up to and around the edge of the mezzanine staff rest area features the M3 logo cut into the metal, which represents the three Ms in their surnames. All very bespoke. And so it is with the equipment that Paul, Richard and the other six technicians use on the three V8 Super Tourer Holden Commodores driven by Greg, Paul and Richard, as well as with customer cars. Taking pride of place in their new East Tamaki premises are four shiny new Rotary 2-post baseless hoists that seemed to be perpetually raising and lowering cars. These, along with a Corghi tyre changer and Corghi wheel balancer, have been supplied by Stocks Equipment. “We wanted the workshop to reflect how we approach our racing and our relationship with our sponsors – thoroughly professional and great attention to detail,” says Paul Manuel. The floor is so clean people could almost eat dinner off it and the lack of clutter and feeling of space is enhanced by the baseless design of the Rotary hoists. Paul says they are very impressed with the American designed hoists and selected them especially for their ability to lift vehicles with very low clearances off the floor. “They’re excellent,” he says. “They lift to good height for working or storing another vehicle underneath, they are very stable and fast, too.” The 2-post SPOA10S5G5 model Rotary hoists are certified to lift up to 4.5 tonnes and feature asymmetrical 3-stage front and 2-stage rear arm coverage and standard polymer adaptors that thread up or have the optional stackable inserts. They come standard with 3-phase (415 Volt) connection, but can be ordered as a single phase model. They’ll also benefit from the in-house service and inspections offered by Stocks Equipment that will ensure they remain in safe and high performing condition throughout their life. The Italian race pedigree of Corghi tyre and wheel servicing machines meant these were also top of the list for the new M3 workshop. This has been established just a few metres away from the Eastern Automotive

business that Paul has been involved with for more than 12 years. The new venture has a clear racing and high performance focus and was something that Greg had wanted to be involved with for some time. His long-term friendship and trust in Paul played a big part in getting it off the ground, particularly with his decision to race in a New Zealand-based series for the first time in 15 years. Complete with a machining centre and integrated panel fabrication shop, M3 has been a hive of activity since the three Commodores for Greg, Paul and Richard arrived and will continue to be the base for the team through the season, which started at Hampton Downs last month (February) and continues to the final event in Christchurch at the end of October. The V8 Super Tourer Commodores the three are racing utilise a four-door touring car shell built on a controlled race chassis, powered by a 7-litre fuel-injected engine. The aim of the series, which is being marketed as the V8 Series of Champions, is to provide an affordable new generation, future-proofed V8 touring car, similar in concept to a current Australian V8 Supercar but at less than half the cost. The chassis is built to not only accommodate both the current VE Commodore from Holden and FG Ford Falcon bodies, but any other similar sized four-door production vehicle such a Toyota Camry, BMW 5

series, etc. The new V8 Super Tourer series cars produce 575 horsepower and feature a 6-speed sequential gearbox. As you may have guessed, M3 racing is an all-Holden team! But it’s not all about the V8 Super Tourers. The purpose of M3 is to build,

Changes in the lubricant market Motor Equipment News spoke to oil and lubricant suppliers and asked for their take on the current marketplace and what they were doing to differentiate themselves and their product from their competitors.
Meeting environmental targets
The market for passenger vehicle engine oil is getting more complicated as OE manufacturers attempt to meet environmental targets and improve vehicle performance says Allied Lubricants, a supplier of Mobil lubricant products. Fuel efficiency is an important aspect along with extension of oil drain intervals and emissions control. Lubricant viscosity is trending towards thinner grades from the 15W-40 standard of recent years to 5W-30. This trend to thinner viscosity will no doubt continue in the coming years to a 0W-20 grade as OE manufacturers chase increasing fuel efficiency targets, says Allied Lubricants. Diesel vehicles often have particulate filters fitted in the exhaust system that require different oil chemistry (low SAPs) to avoid clogging of the filter. Vehicle manufacturers, particularly the European builders, are stipulating specific oil properties for their own new engine designs. Typically no single oil can satisfy this divergence unless customers use a premium synthetic product such as Mobil 1 which offers ultimate performance and keeps the engine running like new, according to Allied Lubricants. Allied Lubricants says the newly introduced Mobil Super 3000 range includes products that are fully Dexos1 and Dexos2 licenced and available to the New Zealand market at competitive prices. Allied Lubricants says it will discuss the General Motors specifications further with anyone who wishes to purchase this product and it will provide a Mobil lubricants solution that is fully licensed against the Dexos specification. If workshops are unsure whether their current product, is licenced Allied Lubricants would suggest they request a copy of the licence from their current supplier. Economic factors such as the global financial crisis, increased oil prices and instability in the Middle East as well as the Christchurch Earthquakes and the rising Kiwi dollar have severely impacted New Zealand industry. Logging exports in the quarter ending September 2011 were down approximately 20 percent, there have been fewer building consents issued and many major infrastructure projects put on hold. With the rising dollar the agriculture market has maintained a very conservative approach to all new spending and investment. Gulf Western Oil says it has been involved with an ever-increasing number of oil analysis trials over the last few years, with a large majority of new customers changing over to a better product both in performance and overall costs. With monitoring via oil analysis, Gulf Western has managed to increase oil drain intervals with its premium products such as Top Dog XDO and Top Dog Global Plus within the transport, agriculture and earthmoving markets. Upgrades from CI-4 lubricants and lower are required for regulations controlling emissions with EGR (exhaust gas recirculation), DPF (diesel particulate filters), Ad-Blue or SCR (selective catalytic reduction) all requiring API CJ-4 Lubricant specifications. There are a number of possibilities in regard to consumption issues and most are not directly oil-related according to Gulf Western. In the past, detergents were the main cleaning agents in lubricants. Now, far more complex additive pack technologies have come into play which involves non-foaming dispersants that Gulf Western use instead of the older technology. These dispersants are commonly made mainly of calcium and magnesium which vary from blend and brand. Some are superior and completely different to others. This is one of the causes of oil consumption on brand and specification change. This consumption issue will usually clear with a

number of oil changes. Let’s not forget, says Gulf Western, that oil has three main functions, which are to lubricate, clean and cool the engine. Oil will burn and turn very black and sooty in a very short time, according to Gulf Western. This is commonly due to the previous oil quality or time spent in the sump. Deposits of sludge build up within the engine compartment corners and carbon also builds up on the oil rings. When oil is changed to a better quality, these deposits of sludge are washed out into the oil and the carbon taken off the rings. These carbon deposits stop oil going past the rings and polish the bore. After a number of oil changes, this consumption issue usually progressively disappears and the engine will be clean again. Remember, says Gulf Western, oils will clean out an engine with all the byproducts discharged out with the oil change. With extended drain intervals, monitored by analysis, soot levels will be elevated. It says the trick is to have a blend that can evenly disperse the soot throughout the oil volume in the sump, remaining viscous, maintaining protective oil film strength and maintaining a good TBN (Total Base Number). Oil Analysis will show these results and Gulf Western says it can subsequently extend drain intervals with safety and extend engine life at the same time. In summary, Gulf Western says it has a premium product range, a number of OEM approvals, and it sources the base oils and additive packs from world-class suppliers with formulations controlled by the most recognised authorities in the world. Gulf Western Oil says it only uses OEM/API-approved additives, and in addition it has quality certification ISO 9001 and offers a written guarantee and seal of quality which it says that few suppliers will offer in writing.
Friction proofing from Wynn’s
With so much focus being put on lowering emissions to protect human health and the planet for future generations, the levels of zinc or ZDDP (zinc dialkyldithiophosphate) in automotive oils is being reduced, according to Wynns. The reason for this is that zinc contains phosphorus and when phosphorus reaches components in the exhaust system such as oxygen sensors and catalytic converters, it can impair their performance. Often you may hear about “the poisoning of a catalytic convertor.” This is where the phosphorus bonds to the catalyst's surface and the catalyst can no longer do its job. This leads to higher emissions which is bad for the environment and ultimately human health. New performance categories of lubricants such as API SN ILSAC GF-5 or ACEA C categories have limits to the level of phosphorus allowed to ensure an effective emissions system life. Zinc is a family of compounds which has been used in engine oils for decades due to its effective performance and low relative cost. It is a multifunctional additive that minimises oxidation, thus help to ensure a long lubricant life and also reduce wear by creating a sacrificial layer which minimises metal-to-metal contact. This is why many motoring enthusiasts have become concerned about the use of lowered zinc levels contained in today’s engine oils. Less zinc means less protection to vital components which increases wear and fatigue to high load and stress areas inside the motor. Wynn’s says it has had the answer to this new issue for over 70 years, in the form of its original product that has formed the cornerstone for its products: Wynn’s Friction Proofing. Wynn’s Friction Proofing can improve the lubricant's film strength and help to minimise wear with its patented blend of additives. This
blend of unique chemistry is not only beneficial for new motor vehicles but also for beloved classic’s which were never designed to be run on today’s lubricants with much lower levels of zinc. Hyundai Motors New Zealand experienced unprecedented growth of more than 19 percent last year which has seen its local service car park growing exponentially. To meet the demands of such market growth and the size of the staff and infrastructure to support it, the Auckland-based company quite literally moved across the road to newer purposebuilt offices and warehousing. The new building in Clemow Drive, Mount
Wellington also incorporates a new national training centre as well as a vastly expanded parts and service operation. The new building has allowed more than 50 percent growth in parts and distribution capacity and Hyundai Motors New Zealand has also invested heavily in technology to improve distribution efficiency. “We resisted the urge to separate parts and distribution from the sales and marketing functions as others have done. We’ve also looked the past
five years of sales growth and we took the decision to increase our capability to deliver a world-class parts solution, because we can’t afford not to,” says Hyundai Motors NZ COO Tom Ruddenklau. “It’s critical for us to have a hands-on approach to our parts and service support so that we can see what is happening and can react quickly. For example, since the move to newer and larger premises we have tripled our airfreight shipments. We receive seven of these a week as well as one forty-foot long sea freight container. The freight task is significant but incredibly important. “We’re serious about servicing our growth and our existing customer base, because if we don’t gear up to meet their expectations someone else will-we find we have increasing attention from competitors for our parts and service business,” says Tom Ruddenklau. “The independent service trade is increasingly important to Hyundai in this competitive environment, and we continually seek to improve our service and our offer so that all Hyundai owners get the experience they deserve.” Hyundai Motors New Zealand has also committed serious investment into its purpose-built Technical Training Centre which can operate up to 200 days a year and cater for up to 32 people in one session. Vehicle manufacturers are now turning out new models with increasingly complex technical innovations such as high-tech electronics, fuel systems, braking, suspension and safety options. These can make life difficult for the aftermarket repair industry by encouraging owners to have their vehicles serviced at franchise dealerships. This is a strategy that all vehicle manufacturers are developing. Diagnostics are becoming increasing difficult, especially for repairers that have not invested in specialised and expensive computer equipment. Panel repair shops now have to deal with increasing complex metals and technical requirements when matching body panels together and meeting the original manufacturer’s safety standards. Whilst independent parts stores and the chain resellers do a good job covering basic, fast-moving parts, there are many items that will never be available through the aftermarket and purchasing other than genuine parts can be risky. It used to be that franchise dealers were always considered to be more expensive to buy parts from but this has changed in recent years and many genuine parts cost less from the dealer than elsewhere. Holden New Zealand, for example, is
in the process of a major price review that will drive prices downwards on top-selling parts. Other makers have already done this. In the very rare occasion that parts are not available locally they can be sent overnight direct to the trade client's workshop. So having met the financial difference for the service and repair trade owners, More than a decade ago, Honda New Zealand had a change of philosophy regarding spare parts and decided to create a parts website so that trade customers could identify a vehicle using a VIN or registration plate and see a visual diagram and a list of components. Honda also changed its distribution style to streamline processes and remove costs to retain competitive prices at retail for the trade. Unrealistic margins and prices on many OE parts had previously scared the trades away from sourcing genuine and Honda wanted to change this. At the time, Head of Marketing Graeme Meyer commented to Motor Equipment News that while this online ordering system was a great deal quicker and more accurate than a suite of parts books that required human interpretation, it took a while initially for the Honda Parts Direct website to gain traction. However, once the system became better known around the trades more than three years ago, Honda Parts Direct experienced a 60 percent increase in internet sales within the 18 months prior to June 2009. This was due to Honda guaranteeing a margin of 35 to 40 percent on every mechanical item ordered online. With more than 686,000 Toyota vehicles on our roads, there is a vast and varied car park for Toyota New Zealand to supply with parts and service consumables. 2012 represents Toyota New Zealand’s 35th year of providing parts and panels to trade customers from its 22,000 square metre warehouse housed behind the National Customer Centre in Robert's Line, Palmerston North. To put that space into perspective, it’s almost the equivalent of five football fields! But it wasn’t always this way. In 1977 when Toyota New Zealand acquired the Robert’s Line site from
transmission manufacturer Borg Warner, the 9,000 square metre building amply met the needs of the 63,000 Toyota vehicles on the road at the time. Toyota New Zealand management could not have possibly imagined that the brand’s car park would expand more than tenfold in 35 years, which necessitated several building and warehouse expansions. In 1991 the first expansion saw the operation in Roberts Line renamed the National Customer Service Centre. Now the building housed all of Toyota’s after-sale functions including parts operations, training, technical support, customer care and its 0800 number.
By 1997, the number of Toyotas on road had reached 390,000 vehicles. Then the government announced zero tariffs on imports, forcing the closure of local assembly plants. The rest of Toyota’s operations moved to Palmerston North from Wellington. An office expansion was necessary and the renamed facility became the National Customer Centre incorporating new vehicle operations, used vehicle operations (Signature Class), parts and technical support, dealer support, training, finance, IT centre and executive. Throughout this time the parts warehouse was coping, but the team members were certainly feeling the pressure of the expanding business and approached the Toyota executive team to consider expanding the footprint of the building. By 2002 over 540,000 Toyotas were on the road and it became necessary to expand the warehouse by an additional 4,200 square metres bringing the overall size to 10,400 square metres. But this still was not
quite enough. This initial expansion was set to last until 2008; however Toyota New Zealand had not considered the proliferation of sales. By 2005 there were 633,000 Toyota’s on the road and this necessitated the parts warehouse expansion of 9,600 square metres in 2006/2007 which nearly doubled the size of the pre-existing space. As yet the warehouse has not reached its capacity but Toyota New Zealand says it may do so by 2015. The warehouse generates 1.5 tonnes of recyclable waste per week. A designated area has been assigned for the weighing and collection of recyclable waste. Rainwater is collected from the huge roof into designated tanks, one of which is used in the vehicle wash bay, and another as backup storage and fire safety. HINO lifts the benchmark
Much to the relief of Hino Distributors NZ Ltd, the new Hino 300 series light and medium duty trucks have been officially launched to market with a travelling roadshow that will visit all of its dealerships in March. With a full range of narrow, wide and crew cab models in short, medium, long and extra long wheelbase configurations, and with body units that are built to go or custom built, there’s a model and configuration to meet most market requirements. The new-generation 300 series offers more spacious cabins to suit Kiwi-sized drivers and passengers, with thinner windscreen pillars for better visibility, bigger doors for entry and exit, and all models receive a suspension seat for the driver to aid long distance driving comfort. Hino says its new-generation 300 Series makes claim to the title of the safest light-duty truck on the New Zealand market. It is the first light-duty truck in New Zealand with vehicle stability control (VSC) as a standard feature. VSC assists the driver in maintaining control of the vehicle. It is designed to help prevent the vehicle from skidding out of control should it deviate from the driver’s intended path through a corner. The VSC and traction control system can be switched off to assist in control of the drive wheel
traction when the vehicle is in muddy conditions. Standard equipment on all models includes SRS airbags for both driver and passenger coupled with emergency locking retracting (ELR) pretensioning seatbelts. All Hino 300 Series models have four-wheel ventilated disc brakes with ABS braking, electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) and brake assist. Hino says it was the first manufacturer to offer fourwheel ventilated discs in the light-truck market with the launch of the Hino Dutro model, and this feature is still unique to Hino. Brake Assist is designed to assist the driver in emergency braking, where the driver is attempting to apply the high pedal force required to obtain the shortest possible braking distance. Together these technologies ensure that maximum stopping power is available, regardless of how the vehicle is laden and the prevailing road conditions. All manual transmission and AMT models have Hino’s ES (Easy Start) hill-start assist. Easy Start maintains braking force after the driver takes their foot off the brake pedal and automatically releases the brake once the clutch engages and the vehicle begins to move. Easy Start operates in both forward and reverse. The 300 Series safety package also includes a front
under-run protection system (FUPS) on all wide cabin models for the first time on a light-duty truck. FUPS helps prevent a vehicle from going underneath a truck in the event of a front-on collision while also protecting the vehicle’s steering components, thereby assisting the driver to maintain control of the vehicle. Hino says the 300 Series meets the internationally recognised European Structural Standards Regulation No. 20 (ECE-R29) for cabin strength. (Hino’s extensive range of light, medium and heavy duty trucks now comply with the ECE-R29 crash test standard.) The company says that special attention has been paid to maximising visibility and minimising blind spots. The windscreen pillars on new wide cab models are only 65mm wide, compared with 100mm or more for 300 Series’ nearest competitors. High-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps are standard equipment on new Hybrid models and safety features include a tilt-cab warning lamp on all single cab models. Euro 5-compliant diesel engine. The improved Euro-5 and Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle (EEV) compliant 4.0-litre Hino turbo-diesel engine is offered with two power ratings. Wide cab manual models have 121kW of power at 2500rpm and 464Nm of torque at 1400rpm, and six-speed transmission, while the standard cab, wide cab automatic and hybrid models are rated at 110kW and 420Nm. The standard cab has the choice of five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, the wide cab auto also has six-speed transmission,
while new Hybrid has a new five-speed automated manual transmission. Hino says it has extracted more power and torque from the same engine capacity as the previous generation 300 Series. The gains in power, torque and fuel efficiency have been achieved through careful attention to engine design, turbocharger pressures and the high pressure (common-rail) electronic fuel injection. Injection pressures have been increased and a new intercooler adopted. The 300 Series meets the requirements of ADR 80/03 and the Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle standard (EEV), which is tougher that Euro 5
– without needing urea additives such as Ad Blue. Key features of the Hino engine include a high pressure common-rail fuel system, a variable-nozzle turbocharger, cooled exhaust-gas recirculation system and closed crankcase ventilation. According to Hino, the engine has the best diesel particulate active reduction system (DPR) system in class, an 800,000km service interval and an automatic self-cleaning system which begins when the filter is only at 30 percent of overall capacity. Hino says it has the added reliability of three fuel filters, including two with water separators mounted on the chassis and a main long-life filter mounted on the engine. All models have an 80 amp alternator for optimum reliability. Daily inspection has been made more convenient by placing key items such as the coolant reservoir on the driver’s side of the vehicle. For engine servicing, single-cab models have a manual-tilt cabin and crewcab models have an inspection cover in the floor. The exhaust emissions also easily meet the EEV (Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle) standard, regarded as the cleanest available in the market. The hybrid model range has a new parallel hybrid system, with increased performance and a new Automated Manual Transmission (AMT). Hino says the new 300 Series has a new exterior design that offers class-leading aerodynamics for improved fuel economy; the new wide cab model’s coefficient of drag is significantly better than that of its major competitors. Space available at NZ’s heavy equipment hub made over $1,000,000, cementing the benefits of exhibiting at THE Expo. TruckCam comes to NZ
TruckCam AB, Sweden, a manufacturer of truck wheel alignment equipment is now offering its products for sale in NZ through newly-appointed agents Sulco Tools and Equipment. Sulco says that TruckCam equipment is endorsed by many of the world’s heavy commercial vehicle
manufacturers including Volvo Trucks, Scania, and Mercedes Benz Trucks. According to Sulco, the TruckCam camera wheel alignment system is the most advanced system on the world market. Thanks to the integrated gyro and inclinometers, precise and accurate measurements are guaranteed. The system can be used for measuring all wheel angles on heavy commercial (heavy-duty) vehicles, such as trucks, trailers, agricultural vehicles, mobile cranes, buses and vans. As each system comes with the TruckCam All-in-One Software, it also enables checking of frame deformations. The computer program guides the user through the measuring process and prints out exact measuring reports before and after alignment. With lighting, everything else falls into place. The interior lighting in the all-new 2013 Mondeo (Fusion in the US) proves that and moves beyond simple functionality. Ford researchers realise that a person’s attention span is limited, and lighting can play a key role in providing a driver with critical and non-critical drivingrelated information without diverting attention. Lighting in a vehicle is about space and dimension, says Mahendra Dassanayake, Ford technical leader for Design, but there’s more to it. “Lighting gives you a sense of orientation,” says Dassanayake. “It’s a unique combination of functionality and comfort. Lights, graphics and displays are critical to drivers; we need to make sure that information is presented to the customer in an effective way.” Developing the ice blue colour available in the ambient, or accent, lighting palette was critical, since it is a shade that can help keep drivers and passengers more alert. This makes it easier for a driver to absorb all the other messages coming from inside the vehicle. The same balance has been used to make sure that the ambient colours potentially available in the 2013 Ford Mondeo enhance the driving experience. Ford researchers have tested how the lighting affects the vehicle’s interior from the driver’s perspective, checking the textures and materials under a multitude of lighting conditions to make sure that glare and reflection are limited on smooth surfaces and that eye strain would be minimised.

But there’s more to it: If the stylish silhouette of the Ford got heads turning in January on the floor of the North American International Auto Show, now it’s time to get to know what’s beyond the surface. “Buying a car is very similar to dating,” said Interior Chief Designer Michael Arbaugh. “You saw the exterior of the new vehicle, and were drawn to it. Now when you see the interior, you realise it’s more than just looks – you want to be in a long-term relationship.” The interior is airy and open, with a higher centre console that’s been achieved by moving the instrument panel back toward the windshield. The console is complemented by comfortable, thinner seats that support the driver-centric theme, resulting in a cockpit-like layout that’s sporty and sexy while still completely functional.
“We kept the interior focused on the driver,” said Arbaugh. “We knew that our customers would be captivated by the driving experience, and we wanted to provide them with a sophisticated and harmonious ambience.” Craftsmanship inside the new Mondeo is key. Dynamic structural elements throughout, like the real metal grills over the speakers, show that every detail of the vehicle has been aesthetically enhanced. Surfaces are softer to the touch, and nothing has been left to chance – even the volume knob is curved to better fit the customer’s fingers. “It doesn’t just look sophisticated, upscale and highquality,” said Arbaugh. “It feels that way, too. “We think it’s the perfect package, one that will make drivers fall in love.” *Colours available in New Zealand are still to be determined. Starting with science
It all starts with how the brain recognises light. “The brain does not see colour,” Dassanayake said. “What we call colour of light is actually a form of electromagnetic energy with different wavelengths. “Light is like a pond, with ripples as the wavelengths. These ripples form and reflect and interact with each other, just like a ray hits a surface and sends a signal and then another sends a signal, and the sensation between the two is what people perceive as blue or red or green.” Certain levels or combinations of light trigger enzymes in the brain. Those enzymes cause emotional responses within the body – states we recognise as stress or calmness or happiness. “The emotions are created based on the secretions of these enzymes that are associated with certain light wavelengths,” Dassanayake said. “There are certain triggers.” So it’s not your imagination – colour can affect how you feel. In fact, it affects everything from your buying choices to your blood pressure. For example: • There are shades of yellow that stimulate parts of the brain, bringing clear-headed, decisive action. • Green, on the other hand, affects the nervous system, causing us to breathe slowly and deeply, helping the heart to relax by slowing the production of stress hormones. • Red – arguably the most attention-getting of colours – likely will evoke the strongest emotions, be that passion or anger. On the Ford Fusion (Mondeo) in North America, the palette is ice blue, purple, blue, orange, red, white and green*. The palette allows the customer to set and change each colour, depending on wants and needs. Another racing star is born Bernard Carpinter reports on Nick Cassidy’s success in the 2012 Toyota racing series.

The 2012 Toyota Racing Series was by far the best yet, with no fewer than 15 overseas drivers coming Down Under to gain experience and keep race-fit during the northern winter. But 17-year-old Aucklander Nick Cassidy consolidated his reputation as New Zealand’s next motor racing star by winning the series convincingly and adding the New Zealand Grand Prix title as well. A revised format for the TRS saw it staged as five rounds over consecutive weekends – ideal for international drivers wanting to get as much racing as possible into a short time frame. And the Toyotas are serious race machine. Based on a Tatuus Formula Renault 2.0 chassis but with different bodywork and a strong Toyota Celica 1.8 litre engine, they are faster than the Formula Renaults that are a very popular category in Europe. Josh Hill – son of Damon Hill, grandson of Graham Hill, both world champions – returned for his second TRS, after some good results in British Formula Renault. Another driver with a Formula One connection was Austrian Lucas Auer, whose uncle Gerhard Berger was a Formula One race winner. Italian Raffaele Marciello is a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, being groomed for possible Formula One stardom. Other countries represented included France, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Thailand, India, Brazil and Puerto Rico. Most of the drivers were teenagers on the way up. The series started at Teretonga (Invercargill) with a popular victory for Josh Hill. Some of the

older fans remembered seeing Graham Hill race in New Zealand during the Tasman Cup days, and young Hill was also aware of the family history: “My grandfather won the New Zealand Grand Prix,” he said. Two Kiwis took the next two places, Invercargill’s Damon Leitch – whose parents had named him after Damon Hill – and Aucklander Jono Lester. The main race day at the Invercargill circuit produced appalling weather – about eight degrees, rain, a piercing cold wind, thunder and even a couple of spells of hail. Not surprisingly, there were a lot of crashes and a lot of safety-car periods. Van Asseldonk won both races but at the end of the day Leitch and Cassidy were on top of the points table, having survived all three races whereas van Asseldonk had crashed in race one. Leitch had a second, third and fourth, Cassidy an eighth and two seconds. Timaru provided better weather for round two, which opened with Cassidy beating Leitch to make the two young Kiwis first equal in the series. Leitch led but Cassidy passed round the outside at the end of the main straight. Cassidy then won the feature race, run in trying conditions – the track was damp at the start so almost all the drivers fitted wet-weather tyres, but then in the race the track dried out and the tyres faded fast. Cassidy adopted the correct strategy – he restrained himself for a while to preserve his tyres then attacked when others’ tyres were failing.
He passed Brazilian Bruno Bonifacio and then van Asseldonk, opening a big lead. Leitch scored his first victory in the final heat, which started from a partially reversed grid, and he came away second in points behind Cassidy. Third overall was Felix Serralles from Puerto Rico who had proved fast and consistent over the opening two rounds. British driver Jordan King had shown some good speed in the first two rounds, but also experienced some bad luck. Things turned round for him at Taupo’s third round. King won the first heat, just ahead of van Asseldonk, and added a fourth and a third to claim the round victory. In race two he was down in 12th at one stage but passed a lot of cars to get through to fourth. Cassidy won race two from Marciello but could manage only eighth in the feature race, the Denny Hulme Trophy, because he had chosen to fit his extra set of new tyres in race two instead of keeping them for the finale. From the start of the feature race, Van Asseldonk squeezed Hill wide coming out of turn one and pulled away for a well-deserved victory. Leitch could not match his earlier results but did enough to stay second in the series, with Hill – who scored two seconds at Taupo – third ahead of van Assledonk, Serralles and King. For the fourth round at Hampton Downs, double TRS champion Mitch Evans joined the series, aiming to keep race-fit in the European off-season and retain his Grand Prix title in the final round at Manfeild. Evans, still only 17, spent last year racing

GP3 in Europe with support from Australian Formula One star Mark Webber. In his rookie season Evans won races in GP3 and for a time led the series, which is two steps down from Formula One and uses turbo cars that are faster than the TRS machinery. Evans immediately showed his class by qualifying fastest and winning the first race, ahead of van Asseldonk and Cassidy. But just after the start of race two there was a series of collisions which resulted in Evans and Hill being forced out of the race. Marciello stayed on track to record his first win of the series. The feature race, the historic New Zealand Motor cup, saw star Kiwis Evans and Cassidy start on the front row. Evans got a bad start and dropped places, and though he charged back to second he could not quite catch Cassidy. Cassidy won the round from van Asseldonk and Auer while van Asseldonk propelled himself into second place in the series, 126 points behind Evans. Leitch dropped to third after a horror weekend that included a mechanical problem in qualifying, a penalty in race two and a collision with fellow Kiwi Lester just before the end of the feature race. The series wound up with the big one, the New

Zealand Grand Prix at Toyota’s home track of Manfeild. Evans qualified on pole and won the Saturday race, the Dan Higgins Trophy, from van Asseldonk and Cassidy. Race two started from a top-six reversed grid, which helped Serralles score the win, with Evans second and Cassidy happy to come in fifth as that clinched the series championship for him. In the 35-lap Grand Prix Evans led away from pole, pursued by Cassidy and van Asseldonk. Crashes brought three early safety-car periods but each time Evans was able to fend off Cassidy and pull away. With seven laps to go Evans had a comfortable lead – but then he came down the front straight with the engine sounding awful, and he had to park the car in the infield. The distraught youngster said the car had started smelling and then misfiring. Cassidy had been under great pressure from van Asseldonk for a few laps but survived and swept on to win the Grand Prix by a few lengths from the Dutchman. “Before the race I looked at the Grand Prix trophy and it’s got names like Jackie Stewart and Chris Amon on it,” Cassidy said. “It’s great to get my name on that; it’s a pretty emotional day.”
However his series win – by a large margin from van Asseldonk – was more important for his career, Cassidy said. “That’s huge,” he said. “Opportunities come with that. I’m hoping to race in the Australian V8 Supercar Development Series or in Europe this year.” Hill had been running fourth, which would have given him third after Evans’ demise, and also third in the series. Unfortunately he had to retire with a holed radiator, so Leitch held on to third in spite of another horror weekend which included a lost nose-cone and getting stuck in a gravel trap. quarter racing – I can’t wait to watch it all on TV3; it’s going to be an amazing show. Then, to get the penalty for spinning Murph – well, we felt that wasn’t right, but we’ll have to live with it. “Still, to come through the weekend fifth in the points after the first weekend is fantastic. “I’d like to acknowledge my partner in AV8 Motorsport, Wayne Anderson and the other V8SuperTourer directors. I’ve seen how insanely hard he and all the V8SuperTourer team have worked. This has been an incredible weekend and anyone that knocked the whole concept needs to have a look at themselves, as we have changed the face of New Zealand motorsport with this series.” In terms of Booth’s fellow Auckland-based teammate André Heimgartner – the youngest competitor in the V8SuperTourer field – Booth says he and the
rest of AV8 Motorsport are very proud of how he’s gone. “We knew it would be a big learning curve for André, but he’s got undeniable natural pace. I’m impressed with how he’s learned about touring car racing this weekend – he’s got amongst the action. All in all, it’s a great debut.” Heimgartner qualified seventh-quickest, finished race one in 15th place after being penalised for making contact with another competitor, then raced strongly in race two to improve to 12th. The 16-year-old completed the weekend with a solid fifth place in the third race to hold eleventh overall in the V8SuperTourer sprint championship ahead of multiple motor racing champion Craig Baird. Booth and Heimgartner compete in the second V8SuperTourers round at the Powerbuilt Tools Raceway in Christchurch over Easter.

“Fantastic and amazing” is how Andy Booth describes the first weekend of V8SuperTourer racing which took place at Hampton Downs from 17 to 19 February. Booth finished the opening round in fifth position on the V8SuperTourers’ points table and said, “I’m really pleased to be among the front-running cars the very first time we’ve been racing. The crowd’s reception has been incredible. The fans we’ve spoken to have absolutely loved the new V8 format and with 28,000 people at Hampton Downs for this first weekend of racing shows the crowd has voted with their feet.” Booth, from Auckland’s Birkenhead, says he has had nothing but positive feedback from the sponsors of his #23 Woodstock VE Commodore V8SuperTourer. “The team from Woodstock are rapt, completely thrilled to have been a part of such a successful debut for this new series.” Having qualified third-quickest behind Greg Murphy and Kayne Scott, Booth started the first race with a strong run at the front of pack. “I was very proud to have led the first V8SuperTourer race for 13 laps,” says Booth, who got a fantastic start to then finish third. “I also really enjoyed being part of the front bunch in race two on Sunday morning – it was honest wheel-to-wheel racing with Jonny Reid, Ant Pedersen and Eddie Bell. That’s something – being able to race this closely – that these cars allow us to do with a lot of confidence. However we had something not quite right in the car’s set-up so I was pleased to secure fourth place in that one.” The final race of this opening round covered 30 laps around the 2.6km Hampton Downs circuit and Booth describes it as being something like a full-scale battle. “I’ve never had a busier race that I can think of!” Starting from fourth, Booth battled with longtime rival John McIntyre, then got spun by another competitor. “It was disappointing to be spun, but it was an entertaining ride nonetheless! of 25 laps,” says Richards. “This highlights the fact the tyres are performing consistently as well.” The grid for Sunday’s third race was determined by points earned from qualifying and the first two races – McIntyre started 8th and Richards 11th. The intensity of competition stepped up another notch with considerably more passing and ‘panel rubbing’. “The third race really was intense. We had safety cars and plenty of passing – I had a great battle with Andy Booth while trying to defend against Andy Knight. There was certainly a lot going on and it was great to come through to end the weekend with a podium place,” says McIntyre, who finished second to Auckland’s Ant Pedersen with Gold Coast-based Kiwi Scott McLaughlin third between McIntyre and Richards. “From here, I think we’re only going to see the racing get closer and closer as everyone learns more about the cars. We can’t wait for round two in
Christchurch at Easter!” The inaugural season of V8SuperTourer racing comprises a four-round sprint championship and a three-round endurance championship. In the sprint championship standings, McIntyre is sixth with 411 points and Richards is tenth with 328. Murphy leads the series with two race wins and 625 points. The next V8SuperTourer round takes place at Easter when John McIntyre Racing heads to Christchurch for three races over two days at Powerbuilt Tools Raceway. John McIntyre and team-mate Steven Richards finished the first-ever round of V8SuperTourer racing with top five places in the third and longest race of the weekend. McIntyre bought the #47 Blackwood Protector FG Falcon home in second place, with Richards in the #556 CRC-backed Ford V8SuperTourer finishing fourth in the 30-lap feature race. “Being on the podium today is largely down to the team who kept toiling all weekend,” says the Nelson-based three-time New Zealand V8 touring car champion. “We’ve had some long nights and we really struggled with the cars this weekend, which just aren’t where we want them to be. But in that last race, we’ve had more passing than I’ve seen in touring car racing for a long time. My congratulations to Ant Pedersen for winning the first feature race – having Murph, and now Ant, win races at our first weekend highlights the fact this has been a phenomenally competitive start for this new category.” Richards also felt happier to finish the weekend on the podium after being tapped by another competitor in the weekend’s second race, as he was in the first on Saturday afternoon. “We’ve had a relatively solid day today, so full credit to the whole JMR team who have put in some long hours,” says the Melbourne-based Kiwi. “To have two cars in the top five in the final race was a great result and shows we’re heading in the right direction. Between now and the next round in Christchurch in April, there’s a lot more hard work to do.” Sunday morning’s 25-lap race saw McIntyre finish sixth, having started ninth, and Richards came through from 13th to tenth. McIntyre’s mid-pack to-and-fro battle with Andy Knight was described by commentators as the ‘battle of the race’. Greg Murphy won the race from Jonny Reid and Kayne Scott. “It was significant to note that both JMR cars were delivering faster and faster laps as the race went on – both John and I achieved our quickest lap in the 23rd
