A vibrant industry icon

eight years later in 1980 Josie joined the company in her role of sourcing and importing VW parts.

Jim Philips developed ill health and left the business in the 1970s and Wayne Talbot retired from the business in 1995 leaving the Fentons in sole charge of the business.

For many customers in the 1970s and 1980s Qualitat European Motors was the place to bring an air-cooled four-cylinder Beetle or Kombi engine for a rebuild, because other independent garages weren’t confident at taking on such work.

Beetle and Kombi customers could drive

their car up to the Qualitat workshop where the mechanics would drop their vehicle's engine out and replace it with a loan engine, while the rebuild process took place. Imagine doing that now, but what great service!

Qualitat celebrates its 40th year in operation this month with a bit of do on October 6th where more than 250 guests will gather to reminisce and celebrate with Wayne and Josie, and we will run a follow-up story on this in the November issue.

Josie told me that they even set up a crèche room once, for a staff member who returned to work after taking only three months maternity leave – that’s dedication to the job and an employer going the extra mile.

This would also explain why there are current Qualitat staff members who have accrued as much as 25 years of service. We’re looking forward to the party on October 6th – congratulations to Qualitat on their 40th anniversary.

Clocking up 40 years

Mazda’s longest-serving dealership owner and operator, Wally Sutherland of Wally Sutherland Mazda, celebrated his 40th year in September.

“We are thrilled to be acknowledging Wally’s wonderful career and marking yet another extraordinary achievement. The entire team at Mazda salute you Wally,” says Mazda New Zealand managing director Andrew Clearwater.

Wally has loved cars for as long as he can remember and has been a part of the motor industry for 60 years. After completing his panel

beating apprenticeship Wally then served two years in the Korean War. Upon his return he opened his own business in 1952.

Twenty years later, in September 1972, he became a Mazda dealer and was hooked on the business of selling cars when he sold his first model, a yellow RX2 Coupe on 15 September 1972. He remains the managing director of Wally Sutherland Ltd and Whakatane’s premier Mazda franchise dealer.

“I have always been mad about motor cars – they are my passion. I used to wash my father’s car every weekend when I was a boy and I think I must have developed my keen interest in automobiles back then.

“Working as a Mazda dealer in 1972 was my dream job, and it still is.

I love coming to work every day – we have a great team, a great product and wonderful customers. I consider myself very lucky to have made a livelihood out of what I am truly passionate about,” says Wally.

When Mazda New Zealand was launched in New Zealand in 1972, Wally signed up to represent the marque in the Whakatane region.

Forty years have gone by and Wally is the only original dealer principal still selling Mazda vehicles.

Today he operates a multifaceted franchise business that includes paint and panel services, vehicle recovery, a new vehicle Mazda yard and an AA agency.

Wally is proud to note that after 40 years at his dealership, he has never once laid off an employee. “My franchise is like my family. I really enjoy supporting my staff in their ambitions and seeing them succeed,” continues Wally.

He has lost count of the total number of staff to have worked at Wally Sutherland Ltd over the years, and has sent over 120 people through various motor trade apprenticeships.

Wally is well-known and respected in the Whakatane community.

local business, he has given back to a number of worthy causes that are close to his heart. In 1992 he was awarded a Queen Service Medal (QSM) in honour of his involvement in Dominion affairs for the Motor Trade Association and the many local charities.

The Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo returns to Sydney in 2013 with a comprehensive exhibition of vehicle repair and servicing equipment, replacement parts, tools and accessories.

A new focus for this industry showcase next year will be an education and information programme which will bring in industry experts to update businesses on the latest technologies available and the new trends in workshop management.

Hosted every two years by the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA), the 2013 Expo will be held at the Sydney Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour from 11 to 13 to April. The

Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo is directed by a committee of executives representing key brands exhibiting at the Expo. This is a trade only show run by the industry for the industry.

More than 350 top Australian and international brands will be on display at Expo and the major corporate sponsor once again is the Tenneco brand Monroe. Exhibitors’ equipment and product demonstrations will be a highlight of the show, with some providing technical presentations and others running competitions.

The Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo will be co-located with the Collision Repair Expo. Entry

AAAA Executive Director Stuart Charity says industry has responded enthusiastically to the 2013 event following the last record-breaking Expo held in Melbourne in May 2011. “We currently have over 93 percent of the total display space pre-sold seven months out from the Expo.

This is a major vote of confidence in the event.

Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo exhibitors’ displays will fill about 15,000 square metres of floor space,” says Stuart.

Similarly, the organising committee expects a huge number of offers from industry to participate in the Expo’s education program. “Education will be a really important focus of the Expo next year.

As technology advances, the service and repair industry is changing – there are new dynamics influencing the traditional order of things.

“It is getting increasingly difficult and risky for workshop owners and managers to maintain a ‘business as usual’ approach. This means we will see fast-moving service and repair businesses growing larger at the expense of their slower competitors.”

Hunter pays for itself super-fast

Steve Riley is delighted with the way his new Hunter Elite has paid for itself.

Steve Riley expected his new Hunter Elite wheel aligner to pay for itself in three years because it was a step up from his old machine.

But instead, he’s managed to recoup his investment in just over five months, thanks to its fast and accurate 3D Digital Imaging technology!

The payback has surprised and delighted Steve, who runs Cambridge Tyres & Alignment, just off the Waikato town’s main thoroughfare.

“It’s that fast, we’ve been able to increase the number of alignments we do without affecting the rest of the workshop,” says Steve, who reckons he and his team average eight alignments each day.

And his old Hunter Hawkeye that was purchased in 2008 was no slouch, either. It’s just that the Elite, which was traded on the other machine, is so easy and quick to set up it can easily achieve a full alignment check in less than the claimed sixty seconds.

After installing the new Elite in March, it had already clocked up 1,000 alignments by the end of July, but the speed isn’t all that has

impressed Steve.

The efficiency of the new machine allows him to make the necessary adjustments and even remove and attach control arms or jig a cross-member and get instant results, reducing time for the whole operation and making it less stressful, too, because he’s not having to rush against the clock.

have the job done by the time they’ve finished their cup of coffee.

Steve says that he likes the way the patented QuickGrip (quick release) adaptors and threedimensional targets make set-ups so much easier than before, taking just seconds, rather than minutes. They use spring-loaded clamping arms that adjust easily to various wheel sizes, along with a simple thumb lever to lock the clamp in place.

They attach quickly, without having to worry about needing to perfectly centre the target, since the mounting position has no effect on measurement accuracy, gripping the tyre instead of the rim edge.

This eliminates risk of damage to expensive alloy wheels – a protective rubber ring at the base of the adaptor provides the only contact with the wheel.

Collaboration expands Daimler and the Renault-Nissan Alliance are collaborating on two new projects to accelerate development of fuel-efficient powertrains.

Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn and Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche confirmed the new projects during a media update about the partnership.

The new engine project is a jointly developed 4-cylinder petrol engine family co-led by Renault and Daimler. The direct-injection turbocharged engine will feature state-of-the-art technology in a compact package. It targets a significant improvement in fuel economy as well as low emissions.

The companies expect to jointly manufacture the new engines. They will debut in Daimler and Renault and Nissan vehicles in 2016.

In the new transmission project Daimler grants

Nissan a license to manufacture automatic transmissions using Daimler´s latest transmission technology for Nissan and Infiniti vehicles starting in 2016.

Nissan subsidiary Jatco is planning to manufacture these newly licensed gearboxes in Mexico. The new transmission will feature “start and stop” and “park and shift by wire” technologies.

Ghosn and Zetsche confirmed that all of the original “pillar projects” announced in 2010 have been accomplished or are on track. The companies are also moving forward with discussions on fuel-cell vehicle power trains, and they are working on a cross-supply program for battery and power train components of zero-emission versions of their small cars.

Vehicle licensing reform – the response every six months. Most countries only require an inspection once a year or every two years, and in many Australian and US states, there is no regular inspection at all,” he says.

“It’s been decades since these systems were given a major review and in this time vehicle quality, reliability and safety have all improved enormously. The AA is pleased to see the Government looking at a wide range of options to ensure motorists are getting the best results for safety, value and their time.”

The review is also considering changes to our annual vehicle licensing system (or ‘rego’) and the Certificate of Fitness system.

The AA says that it will be surveying its members to get their views on possible changes to the WoF and vehicle licensing systems.

Is it worth the risk?

The release of the vehicle licensing reform (VLR) discussion document recently by Government has brought to light a number of different responses from the MTA, VTNZ and the New Zealand Automobile Association.

Motor Equipment News has been following the debate and discussions and has summarised the three responses to the release of the document for our readers to digest:

Missed opportunity says MTA MTA spokesman Ian Stronach said the options announced by Government as part of its Vehicle Licensing Reform provide little in the way of substantive change in the area that offers the greatest opportunity. He says the changes being suggested amount to little more than tinkering at the edges.

According to the MTA the ideas floated in the VLR discussion document concentrate on payment mechanisms more than anything else. Direct debit payments, account management and things like text reminders and early payment incentives form the bulk of the possible changes being considered.

Annual vehicle licensing (registration) could be made simpler and fairer by including licensing fees, or part of these fees, in the cost of fuel at the pump and in Road User Charges. Not only would this reduce overall administration costs to both motorists and Government, but it could be used to better reflect individual driver risk through separating out the ACC component. An ACC component could also be included in vehicle insurance payments, perhaps as compulsory third party insurance.

The costs of annual licensing are ‘flat-lined’ so that the charge to motorists is averaged out with the majority of the fee going towards ACC and the National Land Transport Fund to build and maintain roads. But the way it is applied currently does not take into account that some motorists make far more use of the roads than others, meaning costs are not truly reflected to motorists.

Stronach says that with around nine percent of the light vehicle fleet (300,000 vehicles) at any

time being unlicensed, this would also reduce the opportunity to avoid payment, which would in turn reduce the burden on the traffic enforcement and the court system.

While it is possible to use online services for part of the process, the current vehicle licensing system is still very much based around the regular mailing of paper labels from Government to motorists. That in itself is quite archaic, takes up huge administrative resources and still fails to achieve its set objectives.

The accuracy level of the licensing database is not high, which has ongoing effects on vehicle safety and enforcement.

Stronach says the MTA is heartened that the discussion document suggests these ideas will be looked at in the future, and it has have arranged a meeting with ACC policy officials in the Department of Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment to discuss ideas.

AA welcomes review The Automobile Association is welcoming the Government’s discussion document proposing reforms to New Zealand’s Warrant of Fitness (WoF) and Annual Vehicle Licence systems.

“This review proposes the most significant changes to vehicle regulations since the introduction of used Japanese imports in the 1980’s,” says AA spokesperson Mark Stockdale. “It has the potential to save motorists time and money.”

Some of the options under consideration propose less frequent WoFs, but only if this does not compromise vehicle safety.

Compared to other countries, New Zealand has one of the most frequent inspection regimes in the world. Our vehicles are typically inspected every 6,000km, whereas in the UK they’re tested every 19,000km and in Germany every 32,000km.

“We need to have a system that ensures vehicles are safe, but if safety can be maintained or improved with reduced time and cost for motorists then that would be a welcome result,” says Mr Stockdale.

“New Zealand is the only country in the world that requires most vehicles to undergo a safety inspection

Vehicle Testing NZ (VTNZ) says plans to save motorists time and money could have the exact opposite effect – and see an increase in the number of road accidents.

“We support any initiative to make the licensing more efficient and use advances in technology to reduce costs for motorists,” says VTNZ chief executive Mike Walsh.

“But the options need to be well-informed and we’ll be making comprehensive submissions on these options.

“Efficiency gains and short-term cost reductions need to be weighed up against the potential impact on safety. On the face of it, the potential risks are too high and could lead to a significant increase in road accidents.”

Walsh says international research into links between vehicle defects and crashes varies greatly, but it’s ironic that while NZ is looking to relax our inspection system, Europe and the US are looking to tighten theirs.

“Modern cars are built to better standards, but even newer cars wear out tyres and brakes and our roads are some of the toughest in the world. The average age of the New Zealand vehicle fleet is 13 years and one thing we can be sure of is that age and mileage increase the number of defects.

“At the moment half of all cars going for warrants will not pass without some repairs – if the period between inspections doubles, then the number of defects will also increase, quite likely at a faster rate if you think of the compounding or snowballing effect.”

Walsh says most drivers use their WoF as their regular safety and maintenance check. People are used to paying a little, regularly, to keep their car safe – moving to annual checks is also likely to see the average repair bill increase and outweigh any savings.

“Changing behaviour takes time, and there could be significant costs in police enforcement and education that will add to taxpayer costs somewhere else. At the same time, there’s a greater risk of accidents and road deaths.

“No matter how new your car is, or how well you look after it, there’s usually only a white line separating you from the vehicle coming the other way.”

MTA apprentice of the year Wanganui automotive apprentice Zeb Walker is celebrating success after taking out the 2012 MTA Apprentice of the Year title. Twenty-year-old Zeb, who works at David Jones Motors Ltd, was one of four finalists competing for the title at a competition held in Wellington in September.

The finalists, Ben Liddle (Napier), James Dennis (Gore), Jason Brownlee (Greymouth), and Zeb Walker, were greeted by wet, windy and wild weather in Wellington, and their first battle of the day was against the elements just to get to the event.

It was a tough and testing day for Zeb and the other three finalists who had to complete four practical tasks and a panel interview, with only 45 minutes allowed per task. “The tasks were all pretty challenging, but they were all things that we have encountered during our apprenticeship, that we should know how to do,” says Zeb. The electronic fuel injection task went pretty well for him, but it was the panel interview that was the most challenging. “It was pretty long and quite in-depth, it’s a bit daunting to sit in front of three judges and talk for 45 minutes,” he says.

V8 supercar driver Greg Murphy, called Zeb to announce that he was the winner of the competition and that he would be part of the Greg Murphy Racing (GRM) pit-crew in the V8 Development Series at the Sydney Telstra 500. “He was very stoked to get my call, he sounds like he will be a

good addition to the team,” says Greg.

David Jones who nominated Zeb for the award could not speak highly enough of his apprentice, describing Zeb as diligent, and a hard worker who is approachable, friendly and intelligent.

“Zeb has the enthusiasm for our industry coupled with the right attitude and skills to allow him to take his career in any direction, and he will always have the

backing of our company,” says David. “The team and I at David Jones Motors are all incredibly proud of Zeb and his achievement.”

MTA HR Advisor and interview panellist, Kerryn Foote says that Zeb really stood out during the interview. “Zeb is very focussed and self-motivated.

He showed incredible initiative and prepared himself for every part of the competition. He is very passionate about what he wants to do and I’m sure he will succeed in whatever he sets his mind to.”

Zeb plans to do his ATech qualification next year, and in the future he’d like to own his own business. But for now he wants to learn more about the auto electrical side of the industry and see where it takes him.

As part of his prize Zeb will be a part of the GRM pit-crew in the V8 Development Series at the Sydney Telstra 500 later this year, receive a $3,500 cash prize, a study grant from MITO, a $500 Telecom voucher, a trade tools package from Repco, a gaming console, and much more. There is also a substantial prize package for his employer, and the other finalists.

Essential for engine cooling

The warmer months are approaching, and with many light commercial and older passenger vehicle engines being equipped with radiator fan cooling, Dayco says its vast range of quality replacement fan clutches come to the fore when servicing these vehicles.

The fan clutch was developed primarily as a way to save horsepower since the actual fan blade is capable of robbing up to 15 to 20 horsepower on most engines. Along with this came the realisation that fan clutches could actually save fuel and make vehicle engines run more efficiently due to optimum cooling.

Today’s modern fan clutch is an important part of the entire engine cooling system and is rarely diagnosed as being the single culprit causing air conditioning and other problems.

An improperly operating fan clutch can actually increase a/c compressor head pressures and cause poor performance.

A defective fan clutch can, and often does, causes water pumps to fail.

Days says that the lack of knowledge about fan clutches is the root cause for many of the air conditioning jobs and water pump replacements coming back to the installer.

Dayco says to explain this in a simple way its best to examine water pump failures. Because the water pump and the fan clutch mate together on one common shaft there is a phenomenon called “harmonic vibration,” caused by bearing failure – which is a primary and frequent catalyst for the failure of both parts. This “harmonic vibration” travels along the shaft and can cause either fan clutch failure or water pump failure. The constant vibration causes the ball bearing to pound against the race and eventually wears away the smooth surface from the ball and the race causing total failure.

Another primary cause for bearing failure according to Dayco is an out of balance fan blade – usually caused by some outside event such as a rock nick or break in the blade (or even a minor accident which bends the blade out of shape) which creates a heavy load on the bearings (clutch and water pump) again causing bearing failure.

That’s why it makes good sense says Dayco to replace both parts at the same time, thereby ensuring customer satisfaction.

The Australasian new car assessment program (ANCAP) has confirmed the new Holden Colorado crew cab range will retain its maximum five-star safety rating when fitted with a genuine accessory bull bar.

After assessing technical evidence in relation to the bull bar’s safety performance, ANCAP announced that the popular aftermarket equipment would not affect the vehicle’s safety rating. The 5 star ANCAP safety rating applies to the crew cab range only.

Found oil in the cooling system?

Wynn’s asks what this means and discusses how can it be removed quickly and cost effectively.

According to Wynn’s, if there is an oily film found in the cooling system, it indicates that there has been an oil leak, either around the cylinder head gasket, block, water pump seal or the transmission cooler.

The oil must be totally removed from the cooling system to restore cooling efficiency, even though the oil leak has been fixed. If oil remains in the cooling system, it can reduce the heat transfer properties of the coolant leading to engine overheating issues.

Oil is a precursor to sludge forming which can block the cooling system and again cause overheating of the engine. Thus Wynn’s says it is important to diagnose the fault, fix it and ensure that all traces of oil, are removed from within the cooling system.

A basic drain and fresh water flush won‘t remove the oil according to Wynn’s, as oil always floats on top of water and is very tenacious on warm

internal parts. When the water level drops, the oil will come in contact with the internal surfaces and cling to them, rather than being carried away with the water.

Wynn’s says that most radiator flushes in the market have the same result as they aren’t able to break the oil down. If the oil isn’t totally removed when new coolant is filled into the system, the oil residue floats back on top of the water again on standing.

There are products in the market designed specifically to break down

oil within the cooling system. Some do emulsify the oil well but they can be very corrosive and have a tendency to promote foaming and cause cavitation.

Therefore, when these products are used, the cooling system needs to be rinsed out again with clean water before new coolant can be added. This additional procedure is time consuming and if it is not performed properly, the engine can be damaged by cavitation due to foaming.

Some products are marketed as a two-part system to ensure the rinsing

step is performed.

Cooling system failure is the leading cause of mechanical breakdown in Australasia. Customers expect that quality servicing of their vehicle includes proper maintenance of the cooling system to extend the life of their vehicle.

Wynn's recognises this and its Research and Development team has developed an all-in-one product, Wynn‘s Radiator Flush and De-Oiler that will safely and effectively remove oil, sludge, scale and other contaminants from within the cooling system. It does not require an extra rinsing step due to the anti-foaming properties. It also preconditions the radiator and system prior to refilling with new coolant.

Fuel-cell cars by 2015

Kia Motors has confirmed that it will begin producing zero-emission fuel-cell vehicles by 2015, which it sees as a long-term alternative to

petrol and diesel power for cars.

Kia Motors has just released its latest environmental update, detailing the green initiatives derived from

the US$2.25 billion being spent by the company in research and development during 2012.

While Kia developed its first fuelcell powered vehicle, based on a Kia Sportage, back in 2003 and has been trialing a Kia Borrego 4WD recently, the move to produce the technology commercially still seemed some way off. But technical developments that have extended the range of fuel-cell vehicles almost to the same as a petrol-driven car and made it more robust in both hot and cold climates are also driving down the cost, to make it more affordable.

has centered on using hydrogen that creates electricity to power an electric engine, bypassing the need for expensive and heavy batteries.

The Kia Borrego fuel-cell trials have shown that it is capable of travelling 640 kilometres on a tank of hydrogen, returning the equivalent of 5.2L/100km (54mpg). The only emission is water.

The major drawback with fuelcells is that there is no distribution system in place anywhere in the world for motorists to readily purchase hydrogen, so Kia has joined other automakers to help establish the necessary framework. If distribution is in place by 2015, Kia says it has plans to build more than 10,000 fuel-cell vehicles a year in the initial stages, expanding to 100,000 a year shortly after.

It will still continue to develop allelectric and hybrid vehicles, as part of its strong environmental programme, which has seen Kia reduce its impact on the environment by a massive 44 percent since 2004. For instance, the volume of steel recycled by Kia globally in 2011 rose by 33 percent compared to 2010, thanks to more effective waste management. This enabled Kia’s Sohari and Hwaseong plants in Korea to produce no landfill waste whatsoever last year, helping to reduce Kia’s global production of waste materials by 28 percent compared to the 2003 level.

Kia is set to increase the pace even further, announcing that it will increase its R&D spend next year to US$2.52billion – around six percent of its total sales revenue to ensure its production processes become even more eco-efficient and to accelerate the development of highly-efficient vehicles with low emissions. At a Group level, more than 9,800 employees, including 30 percent of all staff recruited since 2010 are now engaged in research and development, according to Kia. Todd McDonald, General Manager of Kia Motors New Zealand, says the investment level being made in R&D

by Kia “continues to support the growth for the future”.

“The typical level of R&D spend by other leading international companies is usually around 3 percent, so Kia is committing more than double the amount its peers are investing,” says Mr McDonald. “The result of such expenditure will be cleaner and more high-tech vehicles that will be seen on our roads and used by existing and future Kia owners.”

A large number of Subaru applications (manual transmissions) are fitted with a timing belt guide plate which is located directly above the crank shaft pulley. The guide plate’s purpose is to prevent tooth jump and as such is required to be positioned very close to the timing belt. If the guide plate is installed too close to the belt or if the bolts on the guide plate aren’t tightened correctly the plate can make contact with the timing belt cover. Any contact between the plate and belt will cause friction and generate excessive heat.

Usually the first component to fail is the timing belt tensioner unit, as the tensioner is positioned very close to the guide plate. The extreme heat that is generated will compromise the bearings lubricant leading to bearing seizure/failure. When installing the guide plate the natural rotation of the bolts that secure the guide plate will force the plate down towards the belt, and if it goes unnoticed premature failure will be imminent.

Gates says it has seen cases where the heat generated by the friction of the plate rubbing on the belt has been so severe that bearings have disintegrated with less than 50 kilometres travelled. Gates has identified this common cause of premature timing system failures in

Dismantling near-new Fords for the trade More than three years ago, SAMs Auto Parts was established as a specialist Ford dismantling division of South Auckland Motors to solely provide late model panels, engines, transmissions and mechanical parts to both trade and wholesale customers.

South Auckland Motors is New Zealand’s biggest Ford and Mazda specialist, and Fixed Operations Manager Ken Drummond says the Ford dismantling division is not unique to the industry, but it’s not a common practice in such a dealership operation.

“The dismantled parts and panels trade business from SAMs Auto Parts is absolutely complementary to our new parts division, and in fact sales to trade customers from both areas has increased year on year since inception,” says Ken. “At South Auckland Motors, we are unique in that we can proactively supply a mixture of quality new and near-new parts and panels to our trade and wholesale customers, giving them more competitive options and allowing a swifter, feasible and more cost effective repair for their customer.”

Tony Ede was appointed as Sales Manager of SAMs Auto Parts in March 2009 when the division was created.

He is a die-in-the-wool Blue Oval man with more than 20 years’ experience in dismantling and 15 of those specialising in Ford vehicles, Colin Feary joined SAMs Auto Parts earlier this year and assists Tony with the ever-increasing demand for parts and panels. Colin has a decade of automotive technical experience himself and more than four years of

dismantling experience.

On arrival the engines are run up and checked prior to the dismantling process. Only then are the various serviceable panels and parts are stripped off the vehicle.

At SAMs Auto Parts the vehicles are quickly processed indoors and when all serviceable parts and panels are removed, the remnants of the vehicle carcass and shell are sent off to the appropriate recyclers.

Tony says that every part and panel is cross-checked and referenced by its vehicle identification number (VIN) to the vehicle from which it came from, before it is stored within the SAMs Auto Parts warehouse.

“This part of the process ensures that we accurately identify the parts and their model application by using a part number identification process to minimise the possibility of supplying the wrong part to the customer,” he says.

Sometimes the problem which is presented to the help desk isn’t so difficult according, to Herbert Leijen. “It is often the story behind the fault, which is difficult to understand.

“At AECS we don’t understand why it sometimes takes such a long series of events before a simple problem is found and repaired.” he says.

“In this case we dealt with a car that presented a persistent cam shaft sensor fault code,” says Herbert.

“The first garage who owned a scan tool replaced the sensor with a second hand sensor, the check engine light stayed on and the fault code did not disappear. The sensor was the replaced with a new one, with the same outcome.”

“The irritating thing for us is how to explain this to the garage which passed the job on to the diagnostician,” says Herbert. “They simply did not understand how the alternator could be responsible for setting a camshaft

“Anyone who has attended the AECS AED course would understand the explanation and anyone with a dual channel scope could have found this fault. Training, support and proper recording equipment was the key to a speedy resolution of this problem.”

Arm and Fire Herbert says that any technician who has attended the AED training course will know from looking at the signal that the arm and fire levels of the ECU are well exceeded by the extra pulses between the teeth of the camshaft tone wheel. “But why?” he asks.

Induced noise “We suspected induced noise from a high current source; the best is to start by dual channelling the bad signal with all your high current sources, one by one,” says Herbert “To start we scoped the cam sensor signal vs. the ignition coils trigger.

According to Herbert there was no correlation between the ignition system and the noise on the camshaft sensor; the coil was already switched before the induced noise climbed high enough to go past the arm and fire point in the ECU. “The next smart move by the diagnostician was to remove the fan belt disabling the alternator. I must honestly say that I would not have done that just yet,” says Herbert.

“I would have done a recording of the cam vs. injectors or gearbox solenoids first. Alternators do not give trouble often.

Smooth pattern Herbert says this instantly made the pattern smooth. The alternator was removed and a new rectifier was fitted. “The diagnostician sent me the

two channel ATS scope recording of crank shaft sensor vs. cam shaft sensor after repair.

The RPM trace is made with the math function of the scope, the math function is normally used to detect misfire.

It’s fixed “Usually I suggest measuring ignition vs. injection as a first port of call,” says Herbert. “It was not warranted in this case as the engine was running fine. The car went to the garage because the check engine light was on.

“It must be noted that the battery voltage was measured before the repair with a multimeter at a perfect 14.61 volt. A simple alternator job did the trick!”

Volt gives insight into future

Holden recently held a technology workshop of the Volt long range electric car for media ahead of its NZ arrival just before Christmas 2012.

Holden Australia managing director, Mike Devereux told media the long range Volt gave drivers a chance to own the car of the future today.

“From its award-winning advanced technology propulsion to its cutting edge infotainment system and all-new active safety features, the Volt shows us the future and it will be available for New Zealand drivers to own before the end of the year,” he says.

New advanced active safety features, including lane departure warning and forward collision alert, will be offered for the first time in a Holden, making Volt one of the safest vehicles on the road.

Volt’s lane departure warning helps to modify collision risks that may arise when drivers stray over lane markings unintentionally, or depart a lane without signaling first. The system uses a windscreen-mounted digital camera that looks for lane markings to provide lane departure alerts over a certain speed.

The forward collision alert system uses the same windscreen-mounted camera for lane departure warnings to detect slow or stationary traffic in front of the vehicle. The system looks for vehicles ahead and warns drivers if they are following another vehicle too closely.

Safety Developments GM’s electrical systems director, Kristen Siemen, spoke about new safety technology as well as GM’s work on early autonomous vehicles.

“There are many important technologies under development on the way to our vision to build vehicles that don’t crash and ultimately vehicles that

can drive themselves. The building blocks towards that are systems like Electronic Stability Control (ESC), which is now standard on Holden cars.

“The next stage embraces the concept of sensor fusion, an innovation that enables integration of a broad range of sensing and positioning technologies including radars, cameras and ultrasonic sensors that can alert drivers to road hazards and help them to avoid crashes.”

GM is participating in a 2800 vehicle pilot program in the city of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Using hardware piloted initially in a South Australian trial, more than 2800 cars, trucks and public transport vehicles have been fitted with integrated safety systems, vehicle awareness devices, aftermarket and retrofit safety devices. This will enable the vehicles to both communicate with each other and 73 lane-miles of road which has been fitted with transponder equipment.

“This is an important pilot to assess how technology such as GPS and digital maps can integrate with cars, infrastructure and of course, the drivers themselves to deliver safer outcomes for drivers, passengers and pedestrians,” said Ms Siemen.

Infotainment Trends Holden Volt’s driver infotainment system features a touch-sensitive centre console that houses a 7-inch full-colour touch screen display, the interface for infotainment, climate controls and satellite navigation.

Additionally the Volt offers many of the features expected by consumers, including voice recognition and Bluetooth, DVD playback (while stationary), MP3 plug and play functionality, USB input with iPod compatibility, 30GB inbuilt hard drive and

premium low-energy Bose audio system.

GM infotainment senior manager, Kathleen McMahon said that these were features an increasing number of consumers were expecting to see in vehicles.

“We’ve seen a rapid change in the way drivers interact with the vehicles and it has been driven to a large extent by the explosion in usage of smart phones and the accessibility of 3G and now 4G mobile networks,” said Mrs McMahon.

“We’ve got some great plans in place to deliver on those expectations with future cars. To start, we know that consumers are hyper-connected, often on multiple devices or a single device that supports their online life.

One of the new technologies beginning to be rolled out across some Chevrolet models in the United States is GM’s proprietary MyLink system.

An advanced interactive media system featuring a 7-inch colour touch screen with an intuitive user interface and steering wheel mounted controls, MyLink has been developed to integrate with smart phones and offers a USB port for any mass storage multimedia device.

The Holden Volt goes on sale in New Zealand in November and is now available to order from three specialist Holden Volt dealers Schofield Holden in Auckland, Ebbett Holden in Wellington and Blackwells Holden in Christchurch.

It can recharge in less than six hours via a regular household outlet (10A charge), costing as little as $2.75 for a full charge. Replacing flywheels incorrectly will cost

While every repairer wants to do the best for their customers, including reducing the cost of powertrain component replacements, Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket warns of a worrying trend taking place with the incorrect replacement of original equipment specification dual mass flywheels with lower cost and incompatible solid flywheels.

While the difference is not noticeable on some vehicles, the finely tuned variation in harmonics balance between the engine and gearbox is completely lost by this practice. This leads to the eventual wearing of gears to more expensive major drivetrain problems over the long term.

This practice leads to higher eventual costs not only for the current owner of the vehicle and future owners if left undetected, but also for their repairers who are presented with a vehicle with repeated identical gearbox issues in many cases.

Repairers have been known to have replaced gears repeatedly under their own repair warranty, before making enquiries with component suppliers such as Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket to advise on other possible causes.

This is exactly what happened to Wagga Wagga (NSW) based transmission specialist, Doug Kinder from Advanced Transmissions.

“We have a customer with a Mazda BT-50 who came to us having lost fiftgth gear. We dismantled the gearbox and replaced the gear and then, exactly 8,000 kilometres later, the customer was back with the same problem. Wanting to do the

right thing we then replaced the gear at our cost and in another 8,000 kilometres exactly, the car was back with the same issue. This then happened again a further 8,000 kilometres down the track.

We then started to ask questions and discovered that the original dual mass flywheel had been replaced by a solid flywheel which is not specified for that car, but comes at a lower cost for the mechanic to replace,” says Doug Kinder.

There is no advantage to fitting a solid flywheel in the place of a dual mass flywheel which was invented by LuK for the very purpose of achieving total balance between the engine and gearbox harmonics. While more expensive than solid flywheels, the long term cost of replacing the correct component far outweighs the labour and component costs of returned customers along with the greater problems that this practice can cause down the track.

According to Doug, “We have since seen many of these incorrect flywheel replacements in our workshop and have also had situations where customers have gone to the vehicle manufacturer who will not replace broken gears or other components under warranty as soon as they have seen that the dual mass flywheel had been replaced by a lower cost, non OE-specified solid flywheel.”

One of the biggest problems with replacing a dual mass flywheel incorrectly with a lower cost solid flywheel is that in most cases there is no audible difference or vibration change. The harmonics involved cannot be sensed by the driver. But in time, as experienced by Doug Kinder’s customer, expensive gear replacements needed to be made not once but on three occasions, all for not simply replacing the correct dual mass flywheel.

“The dual mass flywheel is no more difficult to fit than a solid flywheel. It is purely skimping on cost and it does not give the customer the flywheel needed and specified to ensure long and trouble free engine and gearbox performance. We even checked the history of the gearbox we were working on and it has no history of gear failures of any kind over many years of operation, as long as it is

fitted with the manufacturer specified dual mass flywheel,” says Doug.

Repairers should also take note of the cost to them once this practice has taken place. In this single Advanced Transmissions case, three gears were replaced at a cost of approximately AUD $500 each, plus one day of labour each time. No business can afford such returns, so it should be normal to always check that if a specific model’s original specifications call for a dual mass flywheel, that this is in fact what has been fitted to the car.

Reason being that in Doug Kinder’s case, they did not replace the flywheel originally, this had been done incorrectly elsewhere, yet the cost of sorting out the problem became his. With more and more cars on Australia’s roads being fitted with dual mass flywheels as original equipment, this can be a serious problem for repairers in the future if not quickly identified.

Feel free to contact Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket if your customers have any similar gearbox failure or wearing concerns on 0061 2 8977 1043 to determine whether a dual mass flywheel has been incorrectly replaced with a solid flywheel. This needs to be rectified immediately to avoid further costly drive train issues down the track.

It is good to know that there are responsible repairers like Doug Kinder of Advanced Transmissions in Wagga Wagga (NSW) who go the extra mile to ensure that their customer’s problems are completely rectified, regardless of the cause, which in this one of several cases, was due to a cost saving mistake by another repairer. With detailed advice provided by Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket customer, John Wilcox of Australian Transmission Components, along with experts from Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket, they solved a major and costly customer issue and potential future issues like it.

Seen and heard at Automechanika 2012 Motor Equipment News publisher Cathy Parker attended the recent 2012 Automechanika as a guest of Messe Frankfurt, here are her impressions of the week-long event which is billed as the world’s largest automotive trade show.

This years Automechanika surpassed all previous records in terms of exhibitor numbers with 4593 exhibitors.

Not only was it the largest Automechanika so far but also the largest ever exhibition to be held at Messe Frankfurt. Having walked around 40,000 steps over three and a half days to see them all, I definitely believe it.

One key theme that sprang out from a number of stands was the growing use of mobile technology and smart phones. Whilst this is fairly well developed in a marketing context, there are now apps for both vehicle owners and for technicians as well as a growing use of QR codes (see side box ‘What is a QR code’?.

For example Contitech put a QR code on each of its parts packages, and when this code is scanned it takes the user to a full set of data about the part – what models it fits, installation instructions and technical details.

There were also several applications on display where an iPhone was used as the output screen for a TPMS (Tire pressure montoring system) and a reversing camera.

In the workshop equipment area there were many brands on display which we don’t see here in New Zealand - and with hoists in particular there were far more brands on display which we don’t see at all.

This meant the hoist manufacturers had to work hard to make displays look interesting.

Similarly in the parts area there were not just companies and brands which are not seen in the New Zealand sector but even countries which New Zealanders normally wouldn’t recognise as having a thriving automotive parts industry – such as Bulgaria, Morocco or Egypt who had multiple exhibitors.

Two local companies. Airplex and Proform Plastics, had a stand each, and there was a NZ Connection with the Whispbar (previously Prorack) featured on the Yakima stand.

A comformable LPG tank from Christchurch-based PPI industries was also on display on the Prins stand.

In the November issue of Motor Equipment News, we will carry a more in depth article in regards to the products and services featured at Frankfurt, but the accompanying photos give an overview of the exhibition.

Nissan unveils V8 supercar engine Nissan has unveiled the engine that will power its V8 Supercars Championship campaign from next season at the team’s headquarters in Melbourne, Australia.

Team co-owners Todd and Rick Kelly, and Nissan Australia Managing Director and CEO William F Peffer Jr, revealed the engine, the Nissan Motorsport VK56DE, in the team’s brand new, stateof-the-art engine department.

The engine department is housed in the extension to the Kelly Racing facility, which will house all 19 departments of the team by the time it is rebranded as Nissan Motorsport on 1 January 2013.

The engine carries ‘Powered By Nissan’ on its cam covers, branding used on Nissan racing engines around the world, including the Nissan DeltaWing that was the star attraction at this year’s Le Mans 24 Hour.

Nissan will proudly be the only manufacturer to use a production engine in the V8 Supercars Championship, using the same engine that will feature in the all-new Nissan Patrol that goes on sale in early 2013.

The VK56 engine is made at the Nissan facility in Decherd, Tennessee in the United States. The engine brings new technology to the V8 Supercars grid, with all-aluminium block and heads, double overhead cam (DOHC) and 32-valve configuration for quad camshafts and four valves per cylindertwice the amount of the incumbent engines.

The V8 is 90 degrees in configuration, uses electronic fuel injection and a MoTeC electronic control unit.

The NISMO-developed version of the VK56DE powered the Nissan GT-R FIA GT1 entry to FIA GT1 World Championship victory in 2011.

In February 2012, just days before Nissan announced its entry into V8 Supercars, three key engineering staff from Kelly Racing visited NISMO headquarters in Japan to establish relations and discuss engine development.

Racing Director Todd Kelly, Senior Engine Engineer Ryan Webb and Race Engineer Brendan Hogan met with NISMO engineers and staff to establish communications and discuss engine options, configurations and components.

While the appearance and specification of the Nissan Motorsport VK56DE may differ from the Ford and Holden engines currently used in the V8 Supercars Championship, the team will work closely with V8 Supercars on achieving a fair playing field for the 2013 season.

The Nissan Motorsport engine brings the latest in Nissan engine technology to the V8 Supercars grid. Vastly different to the current V8 Supercars engines, many areas of the engines will be adjusted to comply with V8 Supercars technical regulations.

The engine has been ‘sleaved’ and the bore and stroke adjusted to fit within current V8 Supercars regulations, resulting in a reduction in engine capacity from 5.6 litres to five litres.

Sweet solution for train fleet

Each locomotive averages between 1500 and 2000 hours of operation seasonally, transporting about 1.3 million tons of sugar cane annually.

Allison’s innovative re-gear for ageing locomotive fleets shows reduced fuel costs of more than 30 percent.

Allison Transmission has provided a cost-effective and more efficient solution for re-gearing a fleet of ageing sugar cane train locomotives in Australia’s Far North Queensland region.

Ross Nucifora of RSC Diesels, the Allison dealer in Cairns, devised the concept of combining a Scania 275hp DC9 industrial diesel engine with an Allison 3000SP automatic transmission. Early indications suggest that the new driveline may cut the mill’s annual fuel bill by more than 30 percent and the cost of replacing old engines and fluid drive couplings by almost $1.2 million AUD. Engineers at Mulgrave Mill were faced with rising fuel prices, increasing repair costs and a significant capital outlay to replace the old, inefficient powertrain components used in their cane trains. “Locomotives equipped with very old diesels and fluid drive couplings would have been very expensive to replace and quite inefficient, with no lock up and about 30 percent slippage,” says Nucifora.

“What we did, in cooperation with Allison, was come up with a package to replace the old driveline with new and more efficient diesels and Allison’s latest technology

- electronically controlled automatics,” he says.

“Initially we re-geared one locomotive as a trial, and the results were outstanding, cutting fuel consumption from 17.5 litres per hour to just 11.5 litres per hour, a savings of 34 percent, while also delivering faster acceleration resulting in quicker trip times,” he added.

According to Morty Owens, plant engineer for boilers and rolling stock at Mulgrave Mill, “The Allison solution is a simple concept that performs perfectly in the hard working cane train locomotives.

“The rising costs of maintaining the old drivelines was a trigger for investigating alternatives, and when I mentioned this to Ross Nucifora, he suggested that the Allison on-road transmission could be adapted and would be more efficient and cost effective, with lower maintenance costs,” said Owens.

From April to November, a fleet of 12 locomotives hauls up to 600 tons of cut sugar cane along 230 kilometres (142 miles) of track to Mulgrave Mill, where the cane is processed into raw sugar products. Each locomotive averages between 1,500 and 2,000 hours of operation seasonally, transporting about 1.3 million tons of sugar cane annually.

That means that the 30 percent slippage of the old fluid drive coupling is no longer a factor,” said Nucifora. “And the compact design of the Allison 3000SP compared to the previous fluid drive couplings means there is more room for our maintenance crew to service any other components,” he says.

are converted to the new Scania engine and Allison transmission driveline, the mill expects to save close to $100,000 per year in fuel, while reducing emissions and environmental impact.

“Using the Allison 3000SP transmission also saves us about $100,000 in capital costs per locomotive compared to replacement of the old fluid drive couplings. No matter which way you look at it, the Allison solution is a smart business decision,”

says Owens. “In addition, Allison transmissions deliver faster acceleration and cruise speed with our fully-laden trains, which means they are more productive and will shift more cane in a given time.”

Ross Nucifora and his team at RSC Diesels in Cairns has programmed the 3000SP transmission to maximize efficient operation with the Scania fivecylinder diesel engine, and also for the unique locomotive application.

Ross Nucifora is now marketing the replacement driveline to other sugar mills. The vast majority of Australian sugar is produced in mills dotted along Queensland’s coastal plains from the NSW border all the way to Cairns, 1,800 kilomtres (1,118 miles) further north.

“There are hundreds of locomotives at sugar mills up and down the Queensland coast. All are around 50 years old, using old technology and inefficient drivelines that cost operators a lot in wasted fuel and slower trip times. We now have a proven package that will save money and time,” Nucifora finished.

Bogaard says it reached a unique milestone in August when it made and sold its 250,000th turbo timer since starting production in 1984.

The Daily returns After a brief hiatus, the revised Iveco Daily range of light, medium and heavy duty vans has returned to the New Zealand market. Robert Barry gets behind the wheel.

It’s been a number of years since I last drove an Iveco Daily van, but hopping into the mid-range 50C17 model quickly brought back memories of just how easy it is to drive, thanks to the automated 6-speed single clutch transmission and powerful 3-litre turbodiesel engine.

The engine is a 4-cylinder 2,998cc common rail direct-injection turbocharged diesel unit which uses both exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in conjunction with a diesel particulate filter to achieve Euro 5 emission compliance. Power is rated at 125kW and maximum torque is 400Nm from as low as 1,250rpm.

Iveco refers to the 6-speed automated manual transmission (AMT) as the Agile, and it certainly does give the Daily driver the ability to use the AMT either leave the transmission in automatic mode or to slide the lever across into manual mode to change up or down a gear as required.

The benefits of a modern AMT are twofold - it offers the fuel efficiency of a conventional manual gearbox, and doesn’t suffer the power output losses of an automatic transmission with a torque converter.

In practice, even in automatic mode it can take a bit of getting used to the transmission shifting from one gear to another, but as driver you soon become accustomed to the rhythm, and find yourself driving along quite swiftly.

the international market. The Daily Van range first hit the market in 1978, and in the 35 years since then it has been substantially developed to meet the needs of the commercial buyer.

All model year 2012 Daily vans are supplied with a bulkhead to separate the load area from the driver's cabin, which prevents the risk of parcels or other items of freight from been thrown forward in the event of an accident.

As well as adding a much more secure cargo area, it also helps the air conditioning to work more effectively to keep the driver and two front occupants cool, calm and collected during a busy day.

The cabin has also been revised since our last test vehicle. Subtle changes have solved the storage issue for cups of coffee as well as large and small drink bottles. The centre seat back now includes a slide-out table as well as a hidden compartment within it which can store a laptop out of sight.

Further, more driver comfort is assured thanks to the Isri weight adjustable suspension seat, which is one of the most comfortable seats in the business, and perfectly suited to drivers covering long distances.

It even comes with a seat base heater, which was certainly appreciated on the chilly morning when we picked the 50C17 up for evaluation.

The MY 2012 Daily van, single cab-chassis and dual cab-chassis range all offer a variety of wheelbase options, plus four roof heights, giving the range a GVM rating from 3,800kg to 7,000kg, with payload capacities of 1,520kg through to 4,140kg. Volume options are from 8.3 cu m to 17.2 cu m, depending on the length of the vehicle and the chosen roof height.

The 50C17 as tested has a 15.6 cu m cargo area, while its bigger sibling on the same 3,950mm wheelbase has a 17.2 cu m cargo area thanks to a higher roofline.

Our test vehicle has the H2 roof which gives an internal floor-to-ceiling height of 1,900mm while the larger van with the H3 roof has an internal floor to

ceiling height of 2,100mm.

Sounds formidable, but in truth if you drive the Daily in the same fashion as you would drive a mediumduty truck, you won’t want for a more comfortable and practical delivery van, and one with a history ofsatisfied customers worldwide for more than 35 years.

Seamless transition for commercial tyre stores Beaurepaires is delighted to announce the successful sale and transition of its heavy commercial tyre service outlets.

The North Island service operations are now owned

by Carters Tyres, and in the South Island by Tyre General and General Tyres. Although the outlets are independently owned and may have different brands, for national fleets, the nationwide network remains unchanged and will continue to supply Goodyear and Dunlop commercial vehicle tyres.

“It has been an extremely positive outcome,” says Goodyear and Dunlop Tyres NZ director of sales and marketing Campbell Gough. “All parties involved in

the sale process were positive and proactive, which helped to minimise disruption to the customers and staff affected.

“Only one of the 24 stores has had to be closed, and the majority of the 219 affected staff have been retained by the new owners, so we are very pleased.

“Aside from different store livery, national fleets will continue to receive the same nationwide service they enjoyed with Beaurepaires.

THE Expo returns in 2013 The Transport and Heavy Equipment Expo (THE Expo) will return to Mystery Creek Events Centre on 7, 8 and 9 March 2013.

This popular trade exhibition is the industry’s platform for promoting advances in technology and new product releases. The event showcases the diverse nature of the industry and includes a raining and Recruitment Village, numerous machinery demonstrations, Seminars series and the Show n Shine competition.

Feedback received by the organisers from both exhibitors and visitors to the 2009 Transport and Heavy Equipment Expo was extremely positive.

In March 2009 the weather cooperated with only a few patches of early rain during the event and with gate numbers for the final show day at 5,957 the event organisers said the total attendance numbered 13,222 people.

The 2009 visitors enjoyed additional 100 trucks participating in the spectacular Show ‘n’ Shine competition.

Alan Lacey with his Lumley Insurance sponsored truck won the Flat Deck and Tractor units category while the Curtain Sider category winner was James Dahm from Rob Dahm Ltd. The Tankers category was won by Dave Johns of the Tatua Dairy Company.

The Tippers category winner was Garry Fisher from Graeme Wright Transport Ltd. The Livestock and Logger category winner was Wal Jackson from Rotorua Forest Haulage. The Classic Trucks Winner was Justin Mills from Allen Mills & Son. The overall Supreme Award went to Allen Mills & Son for their immaculate yellow Kenworth.

The public also had their chance to vote in the People’s Choice Award with the recipient being Wal Jackson from Rotorua Forest Haulage.

Southpac Trucks executive Richard Smart said, “We received a lot of unexpected business and have made a number of sales off our site of both new and used trucks.”

After the 2009 show CablePrice National Marketing and Brand Manager Glenn Croasdale says it was well worth the investment. “We made tangible sales on a number of different fronts and felt bringing Sven-Erik 'Svempa' Bergendahl and his red hot rod Scania T 500 Red Pearl was well worthwhile.”

High-level endurance racing returned to New Zealand with the Father’s Day 400 at Taupo, the first of three long-distance races in the inaugural V8 SuperTourers championship.

Seventeen of the 40 drivers – two per car, of course – were to race at the Bathurst V8 Supercars classic and the field even included a former Formula One driver, Austrian Christian Klien. It was the strongest field seen here since the days of the Nissan Mobil Series, with its long-distance touring car races at Pukekohe and on the Wellington street circuit. The meeting drew a big crowd and was covered almost-live by TV3, and it certainly provided some great entertainment.

The field would probably have been stronger still but V8 Supercars supremo Tony Cochrane expressed the opinion that drivers from his championship should not take part in the Kiwi series. After those comments,

Kiwi Fabian Coulthard, who had been set to share the No. 51 Commodore with Greg Murphy, pulled out. Murphy himself had to withdraw as he was recovering from back surgery – but as it turned out the two substitute drivers, Jack Perkins (son of the great Larry Perkins) and Kiwi teenager Nick Cassidy, did a fantastic job.

Hopes that Kiwi V8 Supercar star Shane Van Gisbergen would join the series were dashed, even though he had tested a V8 SuperTourer earlier in the year. In the end only two regular drivers from the main V8 Supercar championship, Jonathon Webb and Tony D’Alberto, took part, Webb racing with Australianbased Kiwi Scott McLaughlin and D’Alberto with Andy Booth. McLaughlin, still in his teens, was leading the V8 Supercar Development Series and also contesting the full V8 SuperTourer series – and with success; he

It looked as though he had taken a hit and indeed he had – D’Alberto, driving Booth’s Commodore, copped a drive-through penalty for the contact. The Aussie reckoned the penalty was a tough one, as he had got caught out when the bunch right in front of him slowed unexpectedly.

Lester now ran third in McIntyre’s Falcon while Kelly had made a charge forward to take fourth in Moore’s Commodore, ahead of Heimgartner and Gaunt. And that was how they finished, although Gaunt made strenuous efforts to get past young Heimgartner. A superb showing by Cassidy, especially as he had been suffering physically: “I couldn’t find my drink hose,” he said.

Klien, who is also a leading sportscar racer, teamed with Australian Geoff Emery. Jeroen Bleekemolen, known here for his exploits with the Dutch team in A1GP, paired with talented Kiwi Colin Corkery, whose car had been totally rebuilt after its huge crash at Manfeild.

Expat Kiwis coming home for the event included Indycar racer Wade Cunningham and the widely experienced Matt Halliday, whose exploits include A1GP. Cunningham was driving with Jonny Reid; Halliday with Ant Pedersen. Series leader John McIntyre selected young Kiwi Jono Lester, who is racing GTs in Japan this year, to share his Falcon.

Qualifying There were two qualifying sessions, one for the main drivers and one for the co-drivers. McLaughlin’s team showed they had really got their Commodore dialled in as Webb won his session and McLaughlin won his. The race was to be in two legs of about 200km each as refuelling was banned – saving the teams the cost of race-type fuelling rigs and also reducing danger levels in the pits. In each race teams had to carry out a driver change, which can be surprisingly difficult in the heat of the moment, especially if the drivers are of different sizes. Changing tyres was permitted but would be time consuming.

Heimgartner, D’Alberto and Paul Manuell. Cassidy’s performance was quite extraordinary as this was the first time the reigning Toyota Racing Series champion had raced a V8 SuperTourer. But he had more to come…

Leg one Drivers keep saying, “You can’t win the race at the first corner, but you can lose it there,” and they keep forgetting this sage advice as they approach that first corner. There was some biffo as the 20 cars fought for space through there and Manuell went off.

Richard Moore must have taken a knock because his Commodore was smoking as a tyre rubbed against bent bodywork, but he pressed on in the hope that the tyre would wear down and stop smoking.

McLaughlin held the lead from pole, with Booth close in second and then Perkins fending off Reid. McIntyre had not qualified so well but he came through to fifth, ahead of Pedersen, Craig Baird, Heimgartner and former Bathurst winner Steven Richards in McIntyre’s second car. Booth held on to second but his car started sliding around and Perkins gradually closed in, finally grabbing second at the end of the main straight after getting a good drive out of the sweeping corner at the far end of the circuit.

After a safety car period, Pedersen made a successful move on McIntyre, only to be repassed a little later at the end of the straight. Baird – his Ford showing some frontal damage –closed right up on Pedersen.

Then came the designated window for the driver changes. Baird was one of the first in and his team came up with a bright idea to speed things up – Baird got out the passenger side while co-driver Chris Pither came in through the driver’s door. McIntyre pulled off an inside move on Reid at the end of the straight to take fourth.

The decisive moment in the race actually came during those pit stops. The first two cars, the Commodores of McLaughlin and Perkins, came in close together – but when they came out the order was reversed. Cassidy, who had taken over from Perkins, now led the race from the fast and experienced Webb.

Everyone expected Webb to sweep through to reclaim the lead but that never happened. Instead, Cassidy, driving remarkably well in his first event in this class, pulled away and established a comfortable gap.

The safety car came out again when Halliday, now driving Pedersen’s Falcon, spun and ended up

For the second part of the race each car had to start with the driver who had gone second in the first part. This section started in spectacular fashion as Heimgartner’s engine blew up in a big cloud of smoke at turn one, bringing out the safety car straight away. At the end of lap one, behind the safety car, the order was Webb, Gaunt, Cassidy, young Will Bamber in Steven Richards’ Ford, Cunningham, Lester, Kelly and D’Alberto.

Cassidy overtook Gaunt so now we had the same two teams running at the front as in the first leg.

Kelly and Lester also found ways past Gaunt, to move into third and fourth respectively. This time the pit stops did not affect the lead and McLaughlin came out more than three seconds ahead of Perkins. Moore was building on Kelly’s fine work, running third ahead of McIntyre, Simon Evans (in Kayne Scott’s Holden), Booth and Baird.

A safety- ar period bunched the field up but McLaughlin held his lead on the restart. McIntyre and Moore exchanged places a couple of times before Moore ran wide at turn one and McIntyre moved into the final podium position – a reward for good hard racing as he said the car was understeering too much.

In the end, McLaughlin won narrowly from Perkins, meaning that both teams had scored a win and a second. If the tiebreak system had been based on overall time, Perkins and Cassidy would probably have won – a fantastic performance considering that both were substitutes. Instead, however, such ties were broken by looking at the qualifying performances and here McLaughlin and Webb had a clear advantage.

McIntyre-Lester and Moore-Kelly finished third and fourth respectively in both heats so occupied the same positions overall. McIntyre retained his overall lead in the championship. The championship concludes with two more endurance races, at Pukekohe and Ruapuna.
