It’s interesting to note in the media of late the focus on bullying in schools and the advent of text bullying, but there has been very little mention in the news media of institutional or corporate bullying. It’s the unspoken issue in many workplaces, and it’s one elephant in the room that employers need to recognise and have a policy and procedure in place to deal with. Even in the automotive trade, regardless of the size of the workshop or workplace or the number of employees, it’s important that there are workplace policies to deal with any discrimination or bullying. It needs to be clearly spelt out to all employees as to what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour within the workplace. There is a very fine line between having a joke and being offensive to fellow employees, or even showing disrespect to you the employer for that matter. Employees need to know how they can safely raise concerns or objections towards

the offensive behaviour of others, and the process involved in resolving issues. Bullying can often be very subtle too, until such time as your employee realises they are a victim, and it can often be too late to address the issue. It’s very important to have an open door policy for your employees and to proactively manage your staff performance through the use of regular appraisals and setting goals for the employees. Bullies who are managed in such a way often find they can’t handle it, and will often seek employment elsewhere. Kindest regards

Robert

NEWS BATTERY/ChARgERS FEATURE

Taking a Leaf out of Nissan’s book

Nissan’s John Seymour calls it the “Leaf smile”. It’s what you get after about 15 minutes driving the Leaf electric car. When he told me, I looked at myself in the mirror, and sure enough, I had it! The Nissan Leaf is a pure plug-in electric vehicle. Unlike a hybrid, such as the Toyota Prius, it doesn’t have an internal combustion engine to recharge its batteries. The only way you can recharge a Leaf is by either plugging it into the mains, or a special recharging station. The Leaf is coming to New Zealand next year, but Motor Equipment News was privileged to get a special sneak preview drive, courtesy of Nissan NZ. And what an easy car to drive it is. The controls are

simple, and to put it into drive you merely pull back on a ball-shaped device mounted where a gear lever would normally sit. One pull for normal drive, two pulls for economy, and a push for reverse. No gears. Driving it is akin to playing a computer game or sitting in a simulator. The absence of noise is partly the reason for this, as is the smoothness of its power delivery, and the lightness of the steering. With a load of lithium-ion batteries low down in the body, it feels well planted on the road, and has traction control, vehicle dynamic control (VDC) and electronic brake force distribution (EBD). Depending on how you drive it can be slow or quick. In economy acceleration is granny-like; in normal, when you floor the accelerator, you’re a teenager again. How you drive affects the range. Nissan says the Leaf will nominally travel 160km, but things such as temperature, terrain, extra cargo weight, and high speeds or aggressive driving will have a drastic effect on your actual range. But since the Leaf would probably be used for urban commuting, and most people don’t travel more than 80km a day, the range is more than adequate. Unlike an ordinary internal combustion engine the 80kW electric motor delivers its maximum torque from standstill so you literally bolt out of the stalls on

By John Oxley

take-off, and if you keep your foot down you can do 0-100 km/h in about 8.5 seconds. But most of the time you’ll opt for economy so battery levels will drop slowly, you’ll still keep up with the traffic in and around town, and you’ll top up the batteries each time you brake. From a styling viewpoint the Leaf suffers from the blandness that has crept into many Nissan mainstream designs such as the Tiida and Micra, but it’s better in the metal than in photos. Neat and clean would be generous. Inside, it’s modern, with a touch screen display to check up on state of the batteries, plus a digital speed display. And it’s roomier than you’d expect, with room for five and lots of load capacity because there’s no silencer/catalytic converter/fuel tank at the rear of the vehicle. For charging you can use a normal 3-pin 15A socket at work or home, taking about eight hours – preferably using off-peak electricity – or by a fast charger such as the one in Taupo we reported on recently, taking the batteries to 80 percent capacity in about 30 minutes, but much longer to 100 percent. So you wouldn’t be using a Leaf to travel from Auckland to Wellington, but it would be a great daily commuter. REAdER REPly 110903

Giving workshops the professional edge In 2010, over more than 2,000 workshops workshop staff globally around the world were interviewed in a survey conducted by Castrol, to gain insights into how to improve its Professional range offer. Castrol identified the need for its Professional brand to be further differentiated. In addition to the OEM recommendations, Castrol had to offer different features to their workshop customers , to ensure customers could sustain margin and profit. The newly enhanced Castrol Professional range will soon launch into the New Zealand market. Castrol Edge Professional, Castrol Magnatec Professional and Castrol GTX Professional have all been developed exclusively for workshops and service centres, offering a number of new features and benefits. All three Castrol Professional products will now feature micro-filtration technology which is benchmarked to the same level as OEM manufacturers when filling an engine for the first time. Castrol says it will only supply micro-filtration on the Professional range of oils to enhance exclusivity for workshops and service centres. It will not be available in retail take-home packs. Castrol’s current premium synthetic workshop brand, SLX Professional , will transition to Edge Professional which now contains the exclusive fluid strength technology. With engine pressures

doubling in the last 10 years, Castrol says that Edge Professional is its strongest and most adaptive range of engine oil yet. In the fluid strength test, two identical engines were used; one using Castrol Edge Professional, the other using a leading competitor brand. Over six days, both engines ran at full throttle and travelled 22,000km, used 13,500 litres of fuel, burned through four sets of tyres, consumed four catalytic converters and broke two gearboxes, but the oil was not topped up in either engine. The engine using the competitor’s oil could not stand the pressure, whereas Castrol Edge was proven to be up to 40 percent stronger.

To build further differentiation, Edge Professional includes a signature UV dye. When viewed under a bright UV light, Edge Professional will have a unique fluorescence that’s unmistakable. Castrol Edge Professional is not only approved, but is recommended by OEMs such as Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mini, Seat, Skoda, Volkswagen and Volvo. Castrol believes this is a true endorsement based on the credentials of Edge Professional, and no other product from an oil brand is able to reach that exclusive standard. Castrol Magnatec Professional has a new signature optical green dye, in addition to the micro-filtration technology, which provides further visual proof for customers to show their vehicle has been serviced with a Castrol Professional product. Castrol Magnatec Professional has exceeded micron wear limit in the industry sequence 4A wear test. Castrol says that Magnatec Professional formulations provide outstanding low temperature wear protection compared to competitor products. Castrol GTX Professional has also been upgraded and now exceeds the latest industry specifications. As well as the benefit of micro-filtration technology, GTX Professional is independently proven to provide up to 50 percent better engine sludge defence than required by the latest API SN industry standard.

Celebrating 100 years of success When Charles Gates, Senior. bought The Colorado Tire and Leather Company in 1911, little did he know his small shop in Denver, Colorado would evolve into one of the world’s largest manufacturing enterprises. This year Gates marks 100 years of innovation and service, and celebrates its position as a world leader in engineering, manufacturing, marketing and distribution of industrial and automotive belt and hose products, systems, components and services. Formerly known as The Gates Rubber Company, Gates Corporation says it has charted a global course that has seen the company expand into 29 countries around the world. Today Gates says it is delivering solutions that support customers in markets in nearly every country in the world, from industrial and automotive original equipment manufacturers and replacement markets to agriculture, transportation, mining, oil and gas, construction, food

The World Runs On Gates.

For the past century Gates has been powering progress as one of the world’s leading parts manufacturers in the automotive industry, working with virtually every Original Equipment Manufacturer worldwide to design products for new vehicles as they are being developed. These strong relationships together with our commitment to continuous innovation enable us to offer a complete line of OE quality products for the Aftermarket. processing and many others. It has a focus on driving innovation in power transmission, fluid power and fluid transfer, green technologies, energy management and resource extraction and delivery. More than 100 Gates manufacturing, distribution, technical and sales/service facilities around the world will celebrate this milestone with events and activities throughout its anniversary year. Relatively new in Gates years, Gates Australia celebrated its 24th year of trading early in 2011. Although it started out as an agency working from a one man office in 1980, the registered business name of Gates Australia wasn’t created until 1987 and functioned from premises in Dandenong. As the company grew, so did the need for expansion; it was in 1991 that Gates Australia relocated to Hallam and following seven years of trading, the distribution centre outgrew this facility and has since operated from premises in Dandenong South. Today, Gates Australia employs 64 on-site office and warehouse personnel at its distribution centre; with more than 50 of these employees living within the local region. In addition, Gates Australia is represented nationally with eight off-site sales managers servicing all states and territories inclusive of New Zealand. Approximately 14,500 lines from the Gates Group range of products are stocked in a 5575 square metre warehouse at Dandenong South. The company services more than 100 customers within Australia as well as New Zealand and the Pacific islands such as Fiji and Guam. REAdER REPly 110908

CenturyYuasa focuses on customers CenturyYuasa says it has implemented significant management changes designed to better meet the needs of its customers. General manager Stu Stanners says the company recognised that to continue to grow the business and stay engaged with customers, it needed to address the business structure and

invest in more customer-facing roles. “From that internal review process we have made a significant investment in our people that we believe will add value to the assistance and experience that our customers receive from us,” says Stu. “The subsequent appointments reflect our changing focus from having people working across the business undertaking a number of different roles, to more dedicated, targeted positions.” Within New Zealand, the company supplies 260 battery retail outlets as well as working directly with over 3,000 automotive and marine wholesale clients and industrial customers. CenturyYuasa has created two new national positions with the appointment of Matt McKinnon and Mark Robinson to national major account executives. Both men, who report to national automotive sales manager Ward Lye, will work with CenturyYuasa’s key account customers. For Matt, the role is an exciting opportunity that will allow him to facilitate relationships with clients across the board. “The new role will allow me greater scope in engaging with customers, not just at a national product/category management level, but with regional teams and branch managers,” he says. manager for CenturyYuasa, says the new role will allow him to be more personally involved with customers and able to ensure they get a quick response to any enquiries. Another significant staff change has been the appointment of Gerard Wade as marketing manager. Gerard was previously CenturyYuasa’s national major account and marketing manager. Operations manager Patrick Fitzgerald’s role has also expanded with the restructure. Now responsible for overseeing CenturyYuasa’s entire operations department and supply chain, Patrick believes this new cohesive approach will benefit all customers. “The changes have been made with customer service front of mind. There is now a standard operating procedure across all divisions and the Battery Hotline is now a one stop shop for all customer enquiries,” he says. “This change to the call centre will ensure that customers need only speak to one point of contact for any enquiries.” To cope with the increase in calls that will now come through the call centre, CenturyYuasa has employed an additional customer service member. The Battery Hotline call centre now handles over 10,000 inbound and outbound phone calls every month.

President of Schaeffler Group Automotive, Professor Peter Pleus credited this award to the team in the engine systems business division located in Herzogenaurach, Germany. “We are very proud of this award” says Professor Peter Pleus. “It is proof of our innovative force and manufacturing quality that are based on

the achievements of our employees.” Various rolling bearing solutions that were used in the Porsche 356 laid the foundation for the long partnership between both companies. Porsche was also one of Schaeffler’s first customers as Schaeffler began producing diaphragm spring clutches with the LuK brand in the mid-1960s. It was also during this time that Schaeffler laid the basis for its expertise in the combustion engine by developing high-precision valve train components. Among other vehicles, these components were tested in the Porsche 917 Le Mans racing car. Schaeffler was again selected as one of Porsche’s high-tech development partners as the company put the technological tour-de-force known as the Porsche 959 on the road in the mid-1980s. One of these developments was Schaeffler’s hydraulic chain tensioner. This new component proved how effective it was in the most innovative sports car of the time. Porsche also sets the benchmark with Schaeffler’s support in variable valve trains. Switchable bucket tappets

and camshaft phasing units are the key components of the valve control system known as Porsche VarioCam Plus, which is synonymous with efficient and powerful engine technology. The list of references for the successful co-operation between Porsche and Schaeffler in the engine, transmission and chassis is also extensive. Schaeffler’s components for the internal combustion engine now also include hybrid modules. In addition, the company has been expanding its innovative range of products for electric vehicle mobility for quite some time. “The collaboration with Porsche has been very fruitful for both companies, both in terms of development and manufacturing,” says Professor Peter Pleus. “Both Schaeffler and Porsche are borne by a spirit of innovation and the highest standards of quality. Accordingly, we are very proud of the Porsche Supplier Award, which is an incentive for our team to continue developing pioneering innovations in the future.” REAdER REPly 110910

Tyreplus Hamilton opens

With a bright green colour scheme, the new Tyreplus retail store will be hard to miss, if Alvin and Jessica Cobb’s first outlet in Te Rapa is indicative of things to come. However, the changes are not just skin-deep with Tyreplus offering customers and tyre shops a new option in tyre retailing. Alvin and Jessica had been long-time Bridgestone Firestone dealers, but felt that the structure of the Tyreplus franchise suited their needs better. There is good dealer support from

the parent company, Tyreline, and whilst the Michelin and B F Goodrich brands are the key products for the Tyreplus outlets, the stores can also can sell other brands as well. Rounding out the offer available at Tyreplus is the Pedders suspension range. Alvin and Jessica have converted both their Te Rapa store and their central city store to the Tyreplus brand, and it is expected the chain is expected to grow fairly quickly in New Zealand. ETS review clears the air Motor Trade Association (MTA) welcomes Government’s report on the review of the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The certainty now provided through this review will help clear the air around an issue that has until now been subject to much debate and strong opinion. MTA advocacy and training general manager, Dougal Morrison, congratulated the Government on the outcome of the review report, particularly on changes to how synthetic greenhouse gases (SGG’s) should be included under ETS. MTA has lobbied to have a simple levy at the border on vehicles which contain SGG’s in their air conditioning systems, and the review team supports this. This, along with the proposal to remove the exemption for those importing low numbers of vehicles, will now make the scheme more equitable and easier to administer. MTA also supports prohibiting the deliberate release of SGG’s. “For some time now, we have strongly supported mandatory vehicle emissions testing for vehicles. If vehicles greater than say 10 years old were tested and gross emitters repaired

12

or taken off the road, this would have an immediate and demonstrable benefit on air quality. This in turn will help maintain New Zealand’s clean green image.” “We believe that ETS is the easiest and simplest method to encourage a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and we are pleased with the progress being made,” says Morrison.

World first for Mazda Mazda Motor Corporation has become the world’s first car maker to successfully recycle scrapped bumpers from end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) into raw material for new vehicle bumpers. Conventionally, bumpers from ELVs are processed into automobile shredder residue (ASR) and incinerated to recover heat energy (thermal recycling). By enabling the ELV bumpers to be recycled into material for new vehicle bumpers, the new technology, inaugurated on August 21, 2011, improves the material recycling ratio (MRR) of Mazda vehicles and contributes to more effective use of resources. Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director, Mazda New Zealand, says, “Mazda’s bumper-to-bumper recycling programme is part of the company’s commitment to working towards a sustainable future. “We continue to develop advanced recycling technologies and we look forward to delivering further improvements in the future as more design innovation and technological advancements become available.” Many ELVs are more than 10 years old, so the composition of the bumpers’ polypropylene plastic and the adhesive properties of the paint

vary considerably. Before recycling, unwanted materials such as metal attachments must also be removed. As a result, processing ELV bumpers into new material has previously been technically and economically difficult. To overcome this, in the 1990s Mazda began designing bumpers to be easily recyclable, and now the number of ELV bumpers that can be efficiently dismantled is increasing. Currently, approximately 20 percent by weight of ELVs (parts made of plastics rubber and other materials) is incinerated as ASR. Bumpers comprise a large proportion of the plastic so collecting and recycling ELV bumpers is expected to make a significant contribution to reducing ASR and optimising efficient use of resources. Super-fast 3D wheel alignment in less than 60 seconds is just one of the features of the all-new Elite model, the next generation of the Hawkeye range, developed by Hunter. Now proudly being introduced to New Zealand by Hunters distributor Stocks Equipment, the Hunter Hawkeye Elite wheel aligner is the latest in a string of innovations from the world leader in alignment, aimed at enabling workshops to increase their productivity and profitability. Key to the high-speed work of the Elite are new, patented unique QuickGrip adaptors and three-dimensional targets that slash set-up times to seconds, rather than minutes. They use springloaded clamping arms that adjust easily to various wheel sizes, along with a simple thumb lever to lock the clamp in place. Workshop technicians can quickly attach the adaptors without having to worry about needing to perfectly centre the target, since the mounting position has no effect on measurement accuracy. The patented clamping arms grip the tyre instead of the rim edge, eliminating the risk of damage to expensive alloy wheels – a protective rubber ring at the base of the adaptor provides the only contact with the wheel. Another advantage of this system is that the entire adaptor and target assembly are extremely lightweight, weighing less than 3kg, making it easy to handle and install. Constructed from tough polymer materials, it can stand up to the rigours of daily workshop life and the target itself contains no electronics, so requires very little maintenance and there are no messy wires connecting the targets with the cabinet. Additionally, the assembly‘s ultra-compact profile creates more room in the work bay, which makes for easier operation. Also new, and patented on the HawkEye Elite, are the digital imaging sensors, incorporating four high-resolution cameras that instantly update adjustment readings on-screen. Working with the newly designed targets, HawkEye Elite sensors provide 3D modelling of wheel position and orientation for the most accurate alignment measurements. Roll-forward compensation, exclusive to Hunter, allows a technician to compensate all four wheels and capture initial measurements in one quick motion. The Hunter HawkEye Elite features the award-

winning WinAlign alignment software, which runs on a Windows 7 operating system that can be viewed on the 22-inch LCD monitor, instead of the standard 19 inch monitor or printed out. The software supports the use of a drive-on camera to assist with positioning the vehicle on the lift and the TouchRemote feature, which lets a technician operate the system remotely using an Apple iPhone, iPod touch or iPad device. The Hunter Hawkeye Elite (HE421FMAB) enters the market as the top-of-the-range, premium model in the Hunter wheel alignment line-up, priced at $38,995 + GST, which includes delivery, installation and training. The new Elite Wheel Aligner comes complete with Codelink which is a tool which takes care of steering angle sensor settings. Codelink is normally considered an accessory and on its own would cost $2,195 + GST – go to www.hunter.com to see how this amazing tool works. Stocks Equipment says the new Hunter Hawkeye Elite further raises the bar for wheel alignment standards in New Zealand and it already has a number of customers keen to install one in their workshops. “The speed, accuracy and ease of operation have to be seen to be believed – it’s an incredible machine and there is already lots of interest in it,” says Equipment division general manager William Singleton. Anyone keen to see the new Hawkeye Elite model in action can watch a demonstration video on the Hunter website at www.hunter.com or contact Stocks to see it in operation. More than 100 Hunter wheel aligners have been sold since Stocks Equipment became the sole New Zealand distributor four years ago, including the new DSP700 budge-priced sensor head series that was launched earlier this year. Mr Singleton says Hunter wheel aligners have become the equipment of choice for leading tyre outlets, including Beaurepaires, Frank Allen Tyres, Bridgestone / Firestone, Tony’s Tyres and numerous other independent tyre businesses. They are also selected by many leading car dealerships around the country, including Giltrap Audi, Coutts Mercedes-Benz, Team McMillan BMW, Archibald and Shorter and Coombes Johnston BMW. Whilst the new Elite tops the range, the standard Hawkeye 2-camera and 4-camera adjustable boom models (HS201FMAB & HS401FMAB) are still available. Stocks Equipment has Hunter Wheel Aligners starting from $17,995 + GST. Stocks Equipment can also match new Hunter Hawkeye Elite to any of its four-post hoists and wheel alignment scissor lifts. New Aero tyre

Hankook has unveiled a prototype tyre that features aerodynamic winglets on its sidewalls. The Ventus Aero features six winglets on each sidewall which create down force and act directly on the vehicle's axles, maximising tyre grip at higher speeds. The concept tyre also features a dimple structure above three of the winglets on the tyre sidewalls' upper section. The dimples create a micro-vortex as the tyre rotates and assist in reducing aerodynamic drag created by the winglets below them. Hankook has applied for a patent on the technology developed for the new tyre which the company says is the result of its strong focus on innovation. Hankook says it will be expanding investment in future innovation as well as top-level motorsport such as the German DTM touring car championship, where advanced technologies are applied to developing new high performance tyres. Hankook says its aerodynamic sidewall technology will be applied to its racing tyres and it is also likely to be incorporated into a new generation of ultra-high performance road tyres for sports cars.

A new line of flushed-mounted LED downlights just released by Narva will add a touch of class and elegance to the interior of any caravan, motorhome or boat. Featuring a stylish brushed metal facia ring and body with a frost lens, there are two versions of the new downlight available; one option has a powerful one watt LED. or there’s the high-powered three watt LED, both delivering exceptional crisp white output with an impressive spread of light. The two lamps use multi-voltage 9-33 volt LED’s with exceptionally low current draw

making them ideally suited to a wide variety of applications. Each comes pre-wired and includes spring clips for quick and secure snap-in fitment. Narva New Zealand says they are ideally suited for use in caravans and boats due to their low battery draw and they take up very little space in the ceiling cavity. The new multi-voltage Narva LED downlights are available from leading automotive outlets throughout New Zealand under part numbers. 87580 (one watt) and 87581 (three watt). REAdER REPly 110915

Michelin’s better Green X tyre Michelin’s latest energy-efficient tyre, claiming significant improvements in longevity while reducing fuel consumption and improving safety, has been launched in New Zealand. Tests by the China Automotive Technology and Research Centre (CATARC), and verified by the German TuV, state the Michelin Energy XM2 can deliver up to 20 percent longer tyre life than premium competitors. At the same time this has been achieved without sacrificing performance as the tyre has also proven to deliver improved fuel saving and safety attributes in all road conditions. Rolling resistance is reduced by 10 percent over its predecessor the XM1+, while improved tread grooves evacuate up to 20 percent more water. Intended for several categories of vehicles – including city cars, compacts and sedans – the XM2 can equip a wide array of vehicles, from small models to the largest sedans, focusing on the 14-inch, 15-inch and 16-inch tyre segments. Changes to the tyre include: • Alternative bridging technology which reinforces the rigidity of tread blocks, meaning they move less, reducing the rate of tyre wear. • Sipes with alternating bridge, limiting their flexibility to prevent rapid tyre wear without compromising on wet grip. At the same time, the micro-adaptive compound and optimum void grooves of the XM2 reduce the risk of aquaplaning and drivers losing control of their vehicle, because the tread compound is more flexible so it better adapts itself to irregularities of the road surface and therefore provides excellent grip.

The tread grooves also evacuate up to 20 percent more water, lowering the risk of aquaplaning. Fuel efficiency is another major issue among today’s road users, and tyres can account for as much as 20 percent of a vehicle’s fuel consumption, leading to increasing demand for a longer-lasting tyre that reduces fuel consumption while maintaining a high standard of safety. The Michelin EnergyXM2 uses a full silica compound in the rubber to reduce friction between the rubber particles, generating less heat, which in turn means less energy is lost, thus reducing fuel consumption. Mobile calibration from HTC A common problem seen by HTC is that companies need torque tools calibrated, but can’t afford to have tools off-site for an extended period of time. Sending such equipment away for calibration and repair can cause interruptions and downtime according to HTC. HTC says that help is at hand with its nationwide onsite calibration service. HTC’s mobile service vehicles can come to the client’s place of work, carry out torque wrench calibrations and certify all major torque wrenches from 1.2 –1500Nm. Repairs can also be carried out on-site so the tools are available for use within a very short time, instead of being sent away. HTC says its vans are equipped with stateof-the-art electronic transducer systems that are certified and traceable through IANZ. This method of getting the torque tools calibrated has proven to be crucial for a number of HTC customers, as they can carry on with their day-to-day duties with little or no interruptions. Sometimes, with major repairs, tools need to be taken off-site. Again, HTC says it can help, as it offers a hire wrench at a 20 percent discounted rate to keep the client's staff working. The HTC mobile service vans also carry a range of new torque wrenches from Norbar, Sykes Pickavant and Tohnichi that can be supplied on the spot, with a new calibration certificate. In most cases, if HTC doesn’t have a replacement in the service van, it can send new tools from Auckland or Christchurch to arrive at the client’s workplace the next day. The dedicated HTC calibration team travels New Zealand-wide to an annual timetable. It will visit every major city and town in the North and South Islands throughout the year. The calibration vans are stocked with replacement parts to repair most common torque wrenches and the technicians have been factory trained to be able to perform repairs and calibrations.

Keeping it cool In part one of this feature, Robert Barry presents an update about the licensing of refrigerant handlers, looks into the servicing of hybrid vehicles and how the industry will be affected by the future introduction of 1234YF refrigerant.

Update: Licensing of refrigerant handlers. Since the last annual “Keeping it Cool feature ran in the November 2010 issue of Motor Equipment News there has been a significant development on the certification of refrigerant handlers. The Commerce Commission has received an application under its streamlined authorisation process from the Refrigerant License Trust Board (RLTB) seeking authorisation to allow wholesalers to sell refrigerants only to customers who are trained to

20

www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz

safely handle them and can show that certification. The context of the application from the RLTB relates to what is a potentially trade-restrictive proposed practise concerning the supply of refrigerants, however, the purpose of the proposed restriction is to increase public safety which far outweighs anti-competitive practise. In the application to the Commerce Commission the RLTB says that non-compliance with handling regulations directly contributed to the fatal explosion at the Tamahere Icepak Coolstore in April 2008 and it seeks to avoid a repeat occurrence by implementing the new proposed practice. The RLTB is a charitable trust established in April 2011 by the Climate Control Companies Association Inc (CCCA) and the Institute of Refrigeration, Heating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (IRHACE). The purpose of the trust is to promote, educate and train people. To address safety concerns arising out of widespread non-compliance with safety regulations, the RLTB is applying for the Proposed Practise on behalf of all the wholesalers of refrigerants in New Zealand. It is seeking authorisation from the Commerce Commission for all of those wholesalers who wish to participate in the proposed practice to enter into

a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the RLTB, under which those participating wholesalers will agree that they will supply refrigerants only to persons who have been trained to safely handle such substances, as evidenced by: a valid Refrigerant License, a licence to be introduced and issued by the RLTB; or a valid Approved Handler test certificate issued under the authority of the Environmental Protection Authority (formerly the Environmental Risk Management Authority or ERMA) certifying that the person is qualified to handle hazardous substances (such as refrigerants); or a valid Approved Filler test certificate issued under the authority of the EPA certifying that a person is qualified to fill a compressed gas container with gases (including refrigerants). In the application to the Commerce Commission, the RLTB says it will aim to secure the participation of all New Zealand refrigerant wholesalers in the Proposed Practise including any new entrants into the market within that time. However it would be up to each wholesaler whether they decide to participate. The RLTB seeks authorisation from the Commerce Commission for 100 percent participation in the Proposed Practise. From July 2011 the RLTB says it will

provide refrigerant licensing training courses to technicians and engineers who deal with refrigerants. The course will cover material similar to other Approved Handler and Approved Filler training courses but will be specifically targeted to the refrigerant industry. Upon completion of the one day courses costing between $350 and $450, attendees will be issued with a Refrigerant licence from the RLTB that is valid for 30 months, along with an Approved Handler or Approved Filler test certificate under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act 1996 (as applicable). The time frame for this Proposed Practice to be mandated in the application is from a yet to be determined date in 2012. Some refrigerant wholesalers such as Total Air Supply say that when the new proposed practice is accepted by the Commerce Commission, they expect to see it enacted quickly, and that could catch some customers out, particularly those who have ignored the issue and not already obtained licences for their staff.

Servicing hybrid air conditioning As more and more petrol electric hybrid vehicles

come onto the second-hand market in New Zealand, it is important for the independent repairer to understand the technology behind these vehicles when completing any servicing work. The Toyota Prius is one such vehicle that is beginning to become widely available to the second-hand buyer, so we will focus on this vehicle as an example. According to Bob Weber at Auto Service Professional, the MY2004 Prius compressor is powered by a 200 volt AC (alternating current) electric motor built into the compressor assembly. The electric motor takes the place of the beltdriven pulley found on typical vehicles. Weber says if there is a problem, such as a short circuit or broken wire in the compressor wiring, the AC power is turned off. Incidentally, according to Weber the heater core in the HVAC system doesn’t get heated coolant soon enough or consistently enough because the engine is not always running. Therefore cabin heat is backed up with an electric heater. Weber says any power used for heating and air conditioning comes from the car’s high voltage battery system. That can have a negative effect on fuel economy. To minimise the electrical power draw, the air conditioner compressor’s motor is

It has a different insulation characteristic than the previous oil and if ND11 POE or equivalent is not used electrical current may leak. If that happens, the vehicle may shut down. The high voltage may also pose some problems when using an A/C service machine and Weber recommends that workshops check that their machines are hybrid compatible before undertaking any work.

controlled by an electronic control module (ECM). The A/C ECM receives inputs from several sensors such as the cabin temperature sensor, the sun load sensor, a humidity sensor (integral with the cabin temperature sensor), a temperature sensor at the evaporator, and a position sensor on the out door of the HVAC case. The A/C ECM also receives reports as to whether the wipers are running. The information is processed and a signal is sent to the car’s high voltage electronic control unit which tells the AC inverter how much power to send to the compressor’s electric motor. Since the 2004 model year, even the blower motor uses less power by running on a pulsed, duty cycle electrical input. The duty cycle is controlled by the HVAC control module. Troubleshooting the Prius air conditioning system is similar to other vehicles’ A/C systems. However, there are some trouble codes that are vehicle specific to hybrids. Always consult a workshop manual to be sure. Weber says the preferred way to obtain diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) is by using a scan tool. Connect one to the diagnostic link under the dash and follow the instructions and check the appropriate service manuals for DTC charts. Weber says there is nothing special about the compressor removal and replacement other than that the high voltage system must be disabled prior to any work. To access the high voltage main fuse, technicians must first remove the service plug grip. Simply remove the floor panel from the rear hatch area. Next, remove the storage well then the subfloor panel. Wearing insulated rubber gloves, remove the service plug grip, turn the lock lever to the left to expose the fuse which comes out after removing the two bolts. After removing (and plugging) the high-side and low-side air conditioner hoses from the compressor, disconnect the green, high voltage connector. But first release the three retaining clips. Cover the connector contacts with electrical tape. And, it goes without saying that technicians should be wearing insulated gloves during this procedure. The A/C compressor and its electric drive motor come out as a single assembly. A new refrigerant oil was introduced with the

Hybrid vehicles’ electric motors rely on high voltage battery packs for power. On the Prius, voltage can be as high as 270 volts DC. You should not attempt to service a hybrid vehicle unless you are familiar with its overall operation, including the subsystems. Some accessories can power up even though the key is turned off and the engine is not running. Before performing any service, Toyota says: • Shut off the vehicle. If vehicle has smart key system, disable it and make sure the key fob is more than 5 metres away from vehicle. • Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable from the 12-volt auxiliary battery. •Wear insulated gloves. • Remove the Service Plug and do not make any repairs for at least five minutes. • Before touching a high voltage cable (orange) or any cable you cannot identify, use a voltage tester to confirm that the voltage through the cable is 12 volts or less. • After removing a high voltage cable, be sure to cover the terminal end with rubber or vinyl tape. • Use insulated tools, when available. • Do not leave tools or parts (nuts, bolts, etc.) inside the cabin. • Do not wear metal objects (risk of short circuit).

Update on the introduction of 1234YF According to local industry sources there has been much misinformation on the introduction of

Wynns launches Aircomatic III Wynns has launched its successor to the Aircomatic II, the new Aircomatic III with a builtin ozone generator and a 12V DC connection, type cigarette lighter, with a 16A incorporated fuse for ease of use. Wynns says that the Aircomatic III Ozoniser and its Airco-Clean Ultrasonic product for cars stop bad odours in air conditioning systems. The Aircomatic III combined with Wynns Air Purifier Ultrasonic Deodoriser removes and neutralises odours and bad smells in vehicles, containers, boats and many other places. Wynns says the Aircomatic III is easy to use, as no dismantling is required and no supervision is necessary during treatment. The Ultrasonic cell nebulises the Wynn’s Airco-Clean Ultrasonic and Wynn’s Air Purifier products (which must be used with the Aircomatic III) into small drops of less than five microns. The vapour of AircoClean is blown towards the evaporator of the airconditioning by means of a built-in ventilator. The Aircomatic III machine will generate a constant supply of ozone in the car interior which reacts with substances leading to

the new 1234YF refrigerant into new vehicles. Ces Moyes from Total Air Supplies says that she has already been approached by people wanting to purchase 1234YF refrigerant that is not yet available for supply by wholesalers, which she says indicates the misinformation about this product that has permeated the market. “Our manufacturers of tools and equipment say there will not be drastic changes to the equipment other than to the leak detector and the refrigerant identifier, all the basics will remain the same,” says Ces. “Because 1234YF has some flammability the, leak detector has been technologically upgraded to make it safer and more accurate. We have been told that 1234YF will be classed as a drop in, but there is still very little information available.” Richard Cooper from Auckland Auto Air says there has been some unnecessary scaremongering from equipment suppliers trying to get workshops to upgrade their equipment in preparation for the new refrigerant. “Yes, 1234YF is coming in the future but it’s not even in commercial production yet,” says Cooper. “The issue is not going to appear for at least 18 months, and I would advise people to hold off on equipment purchases until there is further clarification.” SPX Robinair has publicly stated that it would be premature for the New Zealand aftermarket to invest in a 1234YF or a dual R143a/1234YF unit in the next three to five years because it says it is highly unlikely that a general workshop will see a 1234YF equipped vehicle during this period. According to the UK equipment supplier Autoclimate, by the end of 2012 it is estimated that fewer than 30 vehicle model types will be equipped with 1234YF, and it will be restricted to vehicle manufacturers hence, its impact outside the franchise sector is likely to be minimal. the removal of the odours. Wynns says the treatment is completely safe for the user of the product, driver, passengers and materials in vehicles. The ozone treatment can only start at the presence of Wynn’s Air Purifier in the machine. The nebulisation of the Air Purifier immediately starts after the ozone generation. Wynns says depending on the concentration of bad smells, three different ozone programs can be chosen: • Presence of bad smells: no ozone production (time programmed as “0”, only treatment with Wynn’s Air Purifier). • Strong presence of bad smells: 15 minutes ozone production (time programmed as “low”, the ozone treatment lasts 15 minutes immediately followed by a treatment with Wynn’s Air Purifier). • Extreme presence of bad smells: 30 minutes ozone production (time programmed as “high”, the ozone treatment lasts 30 minutes immediately followed by a treatment with Wynn’s Air Purifier). Wynns says that treatment is recommended three or four times a year or whenever necessary.

Organic antifreeze technology good metal protector and pH buffer. Phosphates last longer than silicates or nitrites but can interact with hard water salts and may cause scaling in a light duty vehicle cooling system if not correctly formulated. Scaling on cooling system components can cause poor heat transfer and lead to localised overheating. It is preferable to use naturally or man-made soft water, distilled or deionised water when using coolants that might contain phosphates. Prestone says that technicians

need to be aware that not all OEM state the same maintenance practices or service intervals and people should always refer to the specific vehicle owner’s manual for the proper cooling system maintenance schedule. If you have any questions on antifreeze/coolant technology or Prestone Extended Life Antifreeze/ Coolant, email info@holtlloyd.co.nz or go to www.prestone.com REAdER REPly 110923

According to Prestone, some of the reasons for the deviation from inorganic inhibitors are because of longevity and environmental impact. The longer the antifreeze/coolant lasts the fewer number of antifreeze/coolant changes over cycles are required. Also, the longer the antifreeze/ coolant lasts, there is less disposal, recycling and environmental exposure. There are other factors as well, such as new metals, materials, and cooling system designs. Some of the inhibitors that are being replaced or have had their use minimised are silicates, borates, amines, and nitrites. There are others as well. Prestone says that silicates are exceptional at protecting metal components, especially aluminium, because they react fast by coating all the metal components and they can actually help to repair slight imperfections. Although, as a result of their activity, longevity is the key issue in protecting cooling system components in today’s light duty vehicle cooling systems. Silicates can deplete over a short period of time, typically around 16,000 to 32,000km, and if not prepared or stabilised properly, can deplete faster resulting in silicate deposition at the water pump seal which may cause premature water pump failure. This can also result in scaling on hot cooling system heat transfer components, which could result in localised overheating and cooling system failure. When used as an inhibitor, Prestone says that Nitrites are a good inhibitor for cast iron and steel as well as controlling cavitation damage. Nitrites also have fast depletion or conversion rates. Typically at around 72,000 to 88,000 km nitrite levels are too low to protect cooling system components properly. If nitrites are overinhibited they could aggravate corrosion or may cause precipitation and plug cooling system components causing restrictions in the system leading to overheating. Better value from OEM parts Many will remember the days when OEM parts were priced such that taking the risk of buying aftermarket parts, despite a high chance of poor fit and no warranty, was worth the gamble for some repairers. While the problems associated with aftermarket parts have lessened somewhat, as most now carry warranties, there has also been a vast improvement in value from OEM parts suppliers. One supplier in particular, Honda Parts Direct, has been very active in ensuring that genuine parts represent not only best fit and quality, but also best value for money. After consulting with repairers on what was important to them, Honda identified five key areas that are important when purchasing parts. Those areas were; margins, pricing, speed, accuracy and service. And National Parts Manager Phil Cawdron feels that they have not only met expectations in these areas, but exceeded them. Honda decided that the best way to give value to repairers was to provide them with a set margin and great

pricing. This ensured that buying genuine was consistently the best way for repairers to maintain margins, while still keeping their customers happy. Providing predictable margins and pricing that is competitive with

most aftermarket suppliers has proven highly successful for Honda. Phil has noticed that most repairers that request Honda parts quote go on to order the products. Space and loan vehicle availability is always a big concern for repairers, so being able to turn a vehicle around quickly was identified as a key consideration. “We understand the importance of our customers’ time,” says Phil. “We respect this by having reasonable courier charges and an extensive product range available from 32 outlets nationwide, so they can get the car back on the road as quickly and cost effectively as possible.” “Accuracy is also very important to

us, and to our customers. That is why we provide a comprehensive online ordering system and skilled call centre, so that we can get our customer the right product, first time.” It is very clear that Honda Parts Direct has gone out of its way to make sure even that with improving aftermarket fit and warranties, buying genuine still represents the best value. They even offer a three year, 100,000 kilometre warranty on parts purchases and give five percent additional margin to repairers who buy online. So next time you quote parts for a repair, why not put Honda or one of the other genuine parts suppliers to the test? REAdER REPly 110924

Testing ensures production quality

Rubber is often thought of as a low-tech commodity that doesn’t require much monitoring or testing during the production process. But, as rubber manufacturer Mackay Consolidated Industries says, nothing could be further from the truth. Today Mackay has around 400 different rubber formulations that are used to manufacture an extensive range of rubber and bonded composite products to the industry. MacKay says that continual material testing is of paramount importance to ensure these individual rubber compounds meet its strict quality criteria

and will satisfy the stringent requirements of the individual customer. To maintain quality assurance, Mackay have invested heavily in an extensive variety of testing machines. “At the heart of Mackay’s business philosophy is a commitment to provide the best possible rubber based solutions and the highest quality material for customer’s specific requirements so the broad range of testing equipment we have allows us to do this,” says chief material technologist Ajith Silva. Every single batch of rubber is tested before production to ensure it meets Mackay’s quality guidelines. The benefit of doing this is that if any quality issues are identified these can be resolved prior to full scale production. Another benefit is that it allows Mackay to quickly isolate where the issue is, whether it is in the formulation, the mixing or indeed from a raw material supplier. Recently Mackay has invested heavily in new plant and equipment upgrades. One of the most important upgrades was the installation of a computerised CITECT monitoring system, which is being used to progressively link all factory systems and equipment to enable the manufacturing processes and equipment performance to be

centrally monitored and/or controlled – this plays a crucial role in the quality assurance process. The laboratory is NATA accredited and the extensive range of testing equipment for routine quality assurance and compound development. Routine testing of hardness, specific gravity, rheological properties, cure parameters and dynamic properties is used to ensure compounds meet specification. From an environmental perspective, testing can be carried out for ozone resistance, high temperature, low temperature (to -80° centigrade), abrasion and for petroleum and other fluid content, as well as some combinations of these at the same time. A multitude of tests can also be carried out on hoses including burst, fatigue, cyclic temperature and flex. A private-owned company, Mackay Consolidated Industries supplies a diverse range of engineered rubber and bonded metal/rubber composite products to a diverse customer base. It says it exports its products worldwide, where it maintains a competitive advantage based on service and quality and not simply price alone. REAdER REPly 110928

New Cat CT610 tipper excites industry

With payload critical in the earthmoving industry, the Cat CT610 provides more than just fuel efficiency and light tare weight. It’s a smart business decision, according to CAT. When Chris Bastow took over his family’s earthmoving business, its scale was small – just a couple of trucks. But by establishing long-term relationships with an array of customers, he built

it into a fleet of more than 40 trucks, in addition to excavators and floats. Now, Chris is looking to focus on a smaller, more reliable fleet. And he’s excited about the opportunity to move to Cat Trucks for that purpose. “Our firm has a long history of working with Caterpillar, both machinery and motors,” Chris says. “But when Cat came out with on-road trucks, it opened up a whole new dimension.” Bastow’s first Cat truck purchase is a Cat CT610 tipper. Chris foresees opportunities to use it with many of his clients in the road works, drainage and landscaping business. “For me, the Cat brand stands for power, durability and reliability,” Chris says. “And I’m very comfortable with the service capability of our Cat dealer, Hastings Deering. I’ve had a relationship with their group manager, Geoff Short, for more than 20 years.” Caterpillar dealer operations manager for Australia, Robert Toose confirms the dealer network’s readiness to service on-road truck customers like Bastow Earthmoving. “Members of our Cat dealer network are well equipped to offer a one-stop solution for truck operators,” he says. “They have a long history of servicing the Cat engine. And they offer dedicated truck technicians who have been certified to provide

service to Cat on-highway trucks like the Cat CT 610. More importantly, these dealers are now equipped to offer customers bumper-to-bumper servicing for any brand of heavy vehicle truck.” “Bastow Earthmoving is a prime example of a customer whose needs mesh with the value proposition of a Cat truck,” says Jeff Tyzack, General Manager, sales and marketing for Cat Trucks Australia. “The Cat CT610 is a rugged vehicle that works perfectly with a tipper application. It has a very light tare weight, which means it can achieve a higher payload.” Both the new Cat CT610 and Cat CT630, which are conventional prime movers, have been expressly designed and manufactured to meet the needs of Australian customers: The Cat CT610 is powered by the 470-hp Cat C13 engine. With a bumper to back-of-cab (BBC) measurement of 2.72 metres, it is targeted for 19-metre applications and has a capacity of up to 57 tonnes. The Cat CT630 is powered by the 550-hp Cat C15 engine. With a BBC measurement of 3.10 metres, it is suitable for B-double on-highway road-train applications and is available in both 72-tonne and 90-tonne options. TOOL REVIEW

Using thermoplastic welding rods Techspan’s tech tips are designed to provide a greater understanding of the plastic welding process. In this issue We look at thermo plastic welding rods.

Plastic welding rod profiles

Techspan supplies welding rods in a variety of materials and profiles. These include 3mm, 4mm and 5mm round profiles, 5mm, 7mm and 9mm triangular profiles, 8mm x 2mm and 13mm x 2mm tape profiles. Techspan can also supply special

Plastic welding rods:

There are two general groups of plastics which are known as thermoset materials and thermoplastic materials. A thermoset material is produced by a method of chemical reaction. These plastics are commonly used in ‘risk of fire’ applications such as fuse holders. These materials cannot be welded. The thermoplastic material is produced using methods of heat where the material can become molten or liquid at what is referred to as the welding temperature of the specific material. These plastics are those seen most often in industrial and domestic applications. Techspan says that almost all can be welded with very high structural strength.

profiles to order. The most commonly supplied welding rod profiles are 3mm round, 8mm x 2mm tape and 5.7mm triangular.

A range of colours is also available for use on off-road bikes, four wheelers and farm bikes. These are usually a PEMD (polyethylene medium density) material. Techspan carry these rods in a range of specific colours. eg. Honda Red, Suzuki Yellow, Yamaha Blue, Kawasaki Green and so on. It can also produce plastic welding rod in special colours (minimum quantities may apply). A large range of thermoplastics are used across a wide range of applications. The Automotive repairer has perhaps one of the widest ranges of plastics to contend with. Due to the high use of thermoplastics in automotive manufacture, a plastic repairer will need to become familiar with a wide range of plastics. Some thermoplastics are blends of two similar materials which are commonly referred to as composite plastics. The Techspan rod test kit (RTK) is designed to help with identification of this wide range of plastic materials. It is ideal for every welder to help ensure accurate compatibility of the welding rod selection. The RTK contains 40 different thermoplastic materials, each with its own unique code. Once the welder has identified the correct rod, he/she can then order from a range of different profiles and colours.

Mad Mike warms up for the season

Cathy Parker previews the D1NZ drifting series This year’s five-round drifting series was recently previewed to sponsors and media at an open day recently held at Mt Smart Stadium. A number of drivers turned up to show the assembled guests what the sport is all about and preview what the season has to offer.

This sport is often looked down upon by other motorsport competitors, but at the top level drivers such as Mad Mike Whiddett and Gaz Whiter compete internationally and have thoroughly professional operations and

immaculately prepared cars. For example Mad Mike's fifth Generation Madbul RX-7 (sponsored by Red Bull) sports a 26B quad rotor peripheral ported rotary engine. Drifting is not just about being fast, there are points for driving style as well. Watching these drivers performing sideways at enormous speeds along the main straight at a race track is aweinspiring and well worth a day out. We were given the opportunity to try our hands in the D1NZ series V8 RX7 and see if we could pilot it around a cone set up on the track. Whilst

getting the tail out is easily done with all the power on tap, getting any precision to actually get the car around the cone is not that easy and requires experience and skill. The series starts on October 28/29 at Manfield and culminates April 6/7 at Hampton Downs. Other rounds will be held at Pukekohe, Taupo, Mt Smart and Whangarei. Style and safety as standard

Momo motorsport apparel

Italian manufacturer Momo has been a leader in the development of racing apparel since the 1970s and was at the forefront of the development of protective lightweight suits and underwear made from flameproof Nomex. With Griffiths Equipment assuming the

distribution of Momo branded products in New Zealand, the company has taken the opportunity to upgrade the range of apparel carried in this market. It stocks two of the most popular Momo racing suits, the Rookie and the Pro Racer, along with a full range of protective undergarments. The Momo Rookie is designed to appeal to those who are just entering racing or looking for a race suit at a very affordable price. Its light (weighs just 350gm) and is made from double-layer, 100 percent Nomex III, which provides good fire protective attributes and Hans epaulet. It comes in black with Momo logos stitched into the shoulders and collar and comes in sizes ranging from smaller through to XXL. The Momo Pro Racer is made from three layers of 100 percent Nomex III and, thus, offers even more flameproof protection to the wearer. But the extra Nomex layer does not add any more to the weight, thanks to the clever design and tailoring

– it tips the scales at just 350gm – which also helps it to breathe and keep the driver cooler in hot conditions. Importantly for professional drivers, the Pro Racer suit is FIA homologated and it, too has Hans consistent epaulet. Available in grey/ black, this suit features embroidered Momo logos and yellow piping that makes it stand out from the crowd. Sizes range from small to XXL. Buyers of the Pro Racer suit also get a Momo top Driver carry bag. Momo’s range of fireproof undergarments is designed to fit snugly yet comfortably and they are equally light in weight. The Momo undergarment range includes the Momo Professional Balaclava, Momo Professional High Collar Vest, Momo Long Johns and Momo Socks. They are all treated with Nomex, the non-chemical, fire-resistant treatment and each inside seam is covered to further improve comfort. Momo undergarments come in white and all comply with FIA standards. REAdER REPly 110935A www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz

NEWS BATTERY/ChARgERS FEATURE

The times they are a-changing Bernard Carpinter reports on the changing face of local motorsport

This summer’s national motor racing championships, starting at Pukekohe the first weekend in November, will have a different look about them. Gone are several of the top NZ V8 drivers, and all the Porsche GT3s. In come the Sports GTs which are very fast cars, and at some rounds, three-hour endurance races. The Production class becomes Production GT, allowing in more modified cars than the strictly-controlled Production racers. Some meetings will also include other support classes such as older BMWs. The Toyota Racing Series and Formula Ford cater for single-seater fans, while the V8 Utes and the Suzuki Swifts also retain their place in the “Tier One” meetings. Reigning BNT NZ V8 champion John McIntyre and former champions Kayne Scott, Craig Baird, Andy Booth and Paul Manuell are all switching to the new V8 SuperTourer series, starting in February (more on that later). That leaves recent frontrunners – and indeed race-winners – Angus Fogg and Tim Edgell as favourites for New Zealand’s premier motor racing title, though Aussie V8 Supercar veteran Jason Bargwanna should also be right up there this season after the experience he gained last season. Fogg builds and runs his own cars while fellow Aucklander Edgell works with his father, renowned engine builder Randell Edgell, and Bargwanna will again drive for the Christchurchbased Tulloch team. This trio all run Fords. One small change in the regulations this season is a lift in the maximum engine revs allowed, up from 6400rpm to 6600rpm. Tim Edgell says the five-litre V8s are more than strong enough to handle the extra revs and in fact the higher limit should be better for the cars. “On tracks like

Pukekohe the cars have been on the rev limiter in top gear, which is not good for the drive train,” he says. The rev limiter essentially makes the engine keep cutting in and out, which shakes up the drive train. In other categories this could be overcome by changing gear ratios, but that is not allowed

in NZ V8s. So the cars will have a little more straight-line speed this time, and Edgell says they should also sound nicer because of changes to the muffler rules. Some of the stars might have gone but Edgell expects an influx of up-and-coming drivers,

Kayne Scott’s Viper and Grant Brennan’s Corvette can race in the new Sports GT class

especially as some of the top cars from recent seasons are now available for sale or lease at very reasonable prices. Another incentive is that now it will be easier for such drivers to make their mark. Also, there have been some V8s sitting in garages because the owners had lost sponsorship or otherwise become disheartened, and some of these are expected to emerge this time. The Porsche GT3s have provided top-class racing for several seasons. The little coupes are based on road cars but are really factory-prepared race cars, and they have attracted international-standard drivers like multi-champion Craig Baird, Jonny Reid, Daniel Gaunt and, in earlier times, Jim Richards. Now Porsche NZ has pulled out, at least for the time being, but it is notable that Gaunt, Reid and Baird have been dominating the Australian Carrera Cup for later-model GT3s. Replacing the Porsches is the new Sports GT category, which is essentially a class where anything can compete so long as it has four wheels and a roof. Most of the top contenders in this class are expected to be the GT1 cars which untill now have raced as the headline act in the secondtier IRC series. Many of these are TraNZam-type cars (similar to the American Trans-Am racers), with space-frame chassis, V8 engines and replica

bodywork of cars like the Chev Corvette and Camaro, Ford Mustang, Dodge Viper and Jaguar XKR. They are purpose-built race cars, capable of lap times similar to those of the V8 Supercars. Kiwi ingenuity comes to the fore in this class. Some of the TraNZam-type cars have been built from scratch here, while other runners include heavily modified road cars like Carl Hansen’s little TVR Tuscan, which won the inaugural GT1 championship. Then there’s rotary fanatic Cameron Jones, who bought a Camaro TraNZam car, took out the V8 and put in a twin-rotor, turbocharged Mazda RX7 motor. This relatively light car handled very well and finished third in the GT1 series last season but Jones wants more so has built up a triple-rotor engine from which he expects around 900hp. And Nick Chester will be racing what could be called a V8 Megacar – it was being constructed as a V8 Supercar in Australia, but Chester bought it and had it completed with a much bigger engine and other improvements. Three of the meetings – Pukekohe, Ruapuna and Taupo – will include three-hour endurance races starting late on the Saturday afternoon, and these will form a championship series. The rules for the cars in these races will be fairly free, allowing for example Kiwi specials with transplanted engines. There are already endurance series in the North and South Islands – albeit running to different rules – so there is quite a band of drivers and teams enthusiastic about this form of racing, where each car has to have two drivers and pit work can be very important. The Toyota Racing Series had its strongest season yet last summer with several fast overseas drivers, some of whom have achieved success in Europe this year. The line-up for this season has not been announced yet but should at least equal the quality of the previous series. The TRS now has a proven reputation of helping young singleseater drivers prepare for important European series like Formula Renault 2.0 or Formula 3. At the same time it gives hot young Kiwi drivers the chance to measure themselves against international competition, and usually they acquit themselves very well – remember how Mitch Evans dominated the last TRS. The TRS appears at the Teretonga, Timaru and Manfield (New Zealand Grand Prix) meetings, with two other rounds at Hampton Downs and Taupo to create a rapid-fire series with five meetings on successive weekends. Formula Ford, the junior single-seater series, starts at Ruapuna.

BNT NZ V8 winner John McIntyre now moves into V8 SuperTourers

Tim Edgell will be a title contender in BNT NZ V8s this season

The V8 Utes enter their second season in the Tier One meetings, and have now gained official championship status. They have also gained new sponsorship, from UDC, and will again provide entertaining racing with, no doubt, plenty of spins and contact as these vehicles are tricky to handle since they were never designed for racing. Production racing has served a useful purpose by running cars that fans can relate to, especially the younger ones perhaps as the “boy racer” Mitsubishi Lancer Evos and Subaru Impreza WRXs have dominated. However fields have been small so now the class is being opened up to cars running under freer rules. The Suzuki Swifts continue as an entry-level, cost-effective class attracting big fields. The little cars are of course identical so close racing is guaranteed and this is a place to spot up-andcoming talent. V8 SuperTourers

The ambitious new V8 SuperTourer series starts in February, run independently of Motorsport NZ. These cars all have the same race-type chassis and seven-litre engine and will be carrying current-model Ford Falcon or Holden Commodore bodywork (though later there could be other cars represented as well). These cars are fast and drivers who have tested them say they handle well in the corners too. Several big-name drivers are entered, and organisers say all 16 of the initial build run have been bought. The series covers seven rounds, including three endurance races. The long-distance races should attract some V8 Supercar drivers and John McIntyre, who drives with young Kiwi hero Shane Van Gisbergen in the V8 Supercar endurance events, is aiming to continue this partnership in New Zealand next year. So far one support class has been announced, for NZ V8s running to slightly different rules to cut costs. Tier One NZ championship meetings: R1 November 4-6 Pukekohe; R2 December 9-11 Ruapuna; R3 January 13-15 Teretonga; R4 January 20-22 Timaru; R5 February 10-12 Manfield (NZGP); R6 final March 9-11 Taupo V8 SuperTourer series: R1 February 17-19 Hampton Downs; R2 March 30-April 1 Ruapuna; R3 April 27-29 Manfield; R4 May 18-20 Hampton Downs; R5 August 10-12 Taupo (endurance); R6 September 21-23 Hampton Downs (endurance): R7 final October 26-28 Ruapuna (endurance).
