vehicle testing stations and garages and I suspect there will initially be a loss of revenue for the first two years of the scheme being implemented and we will see more operations shut their doors. Interestingly the Motor Industry Association (MIA) says that changing that regime by changing WoF frequency would need significant support and it would take a long time to change the current behaviour of motorists. The MIA says that while comparisons are made by the pro reform parties to less frequent testing regimes overseas, it says the test content is different, older cars have a stricter test and motorists have a different attitude and behaviour to service and maintenance requirements than Kiwis. The MIA says it would like to see the first WoF inspection at three years not two and more stringent tests should apply to older vehicles to recognise use and deterioration of the vehicles. But is that safety net a bit too late, I wonder? Kindest regards,

Seen and heard at Automechanika Frankfurt The bi-annual automotive fair known as Automechanika Frankfurt which was held this month saw more than 4,500 exhibitors in the 300,000 square metre space within the halls of the Messe Frankfurt exhibition centre, and attracted more than trade 150,000 visitors. Motor Equipment News publisher Cathy Parker attended this year’s show and during the show she uploaded interesting news clips onto the Motor Equipment News website (www. motorequipmentnews.co.nz) and also posted commentary on the Facebook pages of MEN’s sister publications, NZ4WD (www.facebook.com/nz4wd) and NZ Company Vehicle (www.facebook.com/ nzcompanyvehicle). Aside from the regular exhibits of parts, equipment and accessories, Cathy says this year’s show featured more than 700 exhibitors in the truck competence category including a large outdoor display of race, rally and trial trucks. E-Mobility was another show theme with a dedicated 700 square metre area including two test courses for e-cars and e-bikes and e-scooters. Another intriguing exhibit was the 170 square metre car wash museum displaying car wash and service station equipment and photos covering the last 50 years. This was be supported by a daily man versus machine car wash challenge where show visitors

could attempt to beat a car wash machine for speed and quality of wash. There were also couple of events which started or ended at the show. On Tuesday September 11 some vehicles departed on the Bertha Benz challenge – an event for vehicles with an alternative propulsion system (including electric, hybrid, fuel cell and hydrogen). On Wednesday September 12 there was the

Automechanika rally featuring more than 100 vintage, veteran, classic and tuned cars, which concluded its run within the grounds of Messe Frankfurt. Further coverage of the 2012 Automechanika Frankfurt will follow in the October and November issues of Motor Equipment News as well as online, where we will present some of the more interesting products and displays. reader reply 0120904

Review of apprentice training By Craig Carlisle, Maintenance Engineering Society NZ

As mentioned in the August issue of Motor Equipment News, the Ministry of Education (MoE) is reviewing the apprentice training industry. The apprentice training review document, which was released in August following a speech by Minister Stephen Joyce, seeks views on a proposal to change New Zealand’s industry training system to improve its effectiveness for employers, trainees and the Government. The key proposed changes to industry training policy which MoE is seeking feedback on are as follows: • Industry Training Organisations (ITO) will focus on arranging training and skill setting for industry. • Greater simplicity, accountability and clarity of the ITO functions and roles. • Higher expectations for qualification completions and programme completions for ITO. • Industry will have responsibility for communicating skill needs directly to Government to create closer links between education, employment and industry. • Amalgamating all apprenticeships into the modern apprenticeships scheme, making the

same level of support available for all apprentices, regardless of age. • Raising the current 10 percent restriction on industry training at levels 5 and 6. • Whether the modern apprenticeship co-ordination fee should be incorporated into the training rate or kept separate. • Adjust to a more sustainable funding regime that increases the subsidy rate for traineeships (programmes of 40 credits or greater) and introduces a new, higher subsidy rate for apprenticeships (currently modern apprenticeships are 100 credits or greater). • A higher rate per trainee is being considered as part of the expectations for improved performance. • Remove disincentives for allowing trainees to progress into employment and apprenticeships from a provider, and for transferring into a provider to complete a qualification if their employment situation changes. • Review quality assurance mechanisms to include management of the processes for assuring consistency of graduate outcomes as a role of the qualification developer.

• Review quality assurance systems for unit standards, with the view that, over time, new versions will be flexible enough to be able to be delivered in a range of delivery settings. The document does not indicate major change, but is a move forward to recognising the uniqueness of apprenticeships. The key areas of interest to the Maintenance Engineering Society (MESNZ) as vocal advocates of apprentice systems are the proposed amalgamation of the modern apprenticeships scheme, increased subsidy rate and removal of disincentives for allowing trainees to progress into employment. The MESNZ has long argued that industry is affected by a trades supply chain that has issues at every level, governance that does not understand what an apprenticeship is about, a school leavers market flooded by devalued options and perceptions, and a training industry primarily focused on finding funding. The MESNZ’s own industry survey underwrote these opinions but also reinforced a major point for readers; engage or accept the fate for not doing so. It says the MoE document is a step in a direction and most importantly, it calls for engagement. The MoE webpage states: “The proposal will be refined following the consultation process. We would like to hear your views on the benefits and risks of this proposal for employers and trainees in your industry.” The deadline for providing feedback is Wednesday, 12 September 2012. Readers can review the document for themselves at http://www.minedu.govt.nz/NZEducation/ EducationPolicies/TertiaryEducation/ PolicyAndStrategy/ReviewIndustryTraining/ ConsultationOnProposalToChangeIndustryTraining. aspx

Gates launches Smartphone App Gates says it parts image capture (PIC) gauge belt wear app is the automotive aftermarket’s first digital belt wear tool designed for professionals. Gates automotive aftermarket division says the PIC gauge belt wear app, delivers accurate measurement and evaluation of serpentine belt wear. Using state-of-the-art digital imaging technology in concert with industry-standard specifications for serpentine belts, the Gates PIC Gauge utilises a photograph taken with the smartphone’s built-in camera, which is then analysed by patent-pending software

6

www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz

to determine the degree of rib wear detected. The analysis returns one of three results: within specifications (green), wear detected (yellow), or replace belt (red). Belt wear measurements can be captured from any automotive or heavy-duty serpentine belt. “One of the easiest and best ways to avoid expensive repairs down the road is to replace a vehicle’s serpentine belt on time,” said Gates marketing vice president David Miller. “While the typical customer may not think to have the belt checked, PIC Gauge allows professional technicians and service writers to easily inspect a vehicle’s belt while in the shop for routine maintenance or repair.” Since the late 1990s, car manufacturers have phased out the use of neoprene belts and now install ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) belts on new models. EPDM is a superior

technology with better performance characteristics but, like any wear part, belts made with this material have a limited service life. As EPDM belts age, they rarely show wear symptoms such as cracks and chunk-outs that are typical of neoprene belts. PIC Gauge is able to detect material loss and wear on these newer belts. The PIC Gauge is simple to use and the results, which are immediate, can be stored and retrieved for future reference. It is the first digital belt wear tool available that is designed for professional technicians, service writers, and do-it-yourselfers. Gates has enabled technicians to regularly and easily check vehicle belts, helping the consumer avoid costly breakdowns and potentially dangerous situations. The Gates PIC gauge belt wear app is currently available for the iPhone and may be downloaded for free from Apple’s app store. reader reply 0120906a

Prisoner achievements acknowledged “The prisoners have worked hard to complete the course and have achieved good results, which has been formally recognised by Manukau Institute of Technology,” says Ms Robertson. “They received practical, handson training by qualified instructors in our small motors workshop, with assistance from MIT.” The prisoners are qualified to repair small, petrol-powered motors like lawn mowers and weed eaters. Ms Robertson said the Small Motors Engineering course supported the Department’s commitment to reducing reoffending by 25 percent by 2017. “We know that by assisting prisoners to reintegrate into the community, giving them skills and helping them find sustainable work after release, that they are less likely to reoffend. The Small Motors Engineering course has given them employable skills and self confidence to help them turn their lives around,”

BusinessNZ chief executive Phil O’Reilly presents a prisoner with her certificate at the small motors graduation ceremony while instructor Arun Raj looks on.

The first group of prisoners to graduate from the Small Motors Engineering course at Auckland Region Women’s Corrections Facility (ARWCF) have gained valuable skills that will help them find employment and reintegrate into the community, prison manager Agnes Robertson said today. Eight women prisoners were

acknowledged for their achievements in a ceremony at the prison recently. BusinessNZ chief executive Phil O’Reilly presented the prisoners with their graduation certificates. The prisoners have completed a National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (level 2) and continued their studies with a Weltec ITO Certificate in Small Motors.

she says. Training programmes such as the Small Motors Engineering course prepares prisoners for additional engineering training, or for a release to work scheme. The training has a firm foundation at ARWCF which gives prisoners a wide range of opportunities to gain employment, particularly in the engineering sector. The Department aims to provide quality employment activities, the opportunity to attain recognised qualifications, and more vocational training and on-the-job experience. These are important contributions to achieving the Department’s overall goal of reducing reoffending by 25 percent by 2017. “Cutting the rates of reoffending leaves fewer victims and adds significantly to the social well-being of our communities as offenders become productive members of our society,” says Agnes Robertson.

Funnels that work

Narva unveils USB rechargeable torch

The handy Narva USB rechargeable LED torch. FloTool funnels are designed for a variety of tasks.

Ever tried to top up oil in a hard-to-reach filler opening in the car and spilt it all over the engine? Then you’ll appreciate the new range of FloTool funnels, now being introduced to New Zealand by Griffiths Equipment, that offer easy ways to refill oil, fuel or any other liquids around cars, trucks and boats. FloTool has designed a range of funnels that cover a variety of applications and turn a possible messy task into a clean and quick job. “Ordinary funnels often don’t do the job properly because they won’t stand up in opening or cannot reach it properly or they are too small and the oil/ fuel overflows – that’s when you need a smart funnel designed specifically for the job,” says Griffiths Equipment sales manager Bruce Walker. Rather than just expect one funnel to do different tasks, FloTool has created a variety of funnels, most designed with specific jobs in mind. For instance, there’s the Tight Spot Funnel, which is made from flexible material so that it can be squeezed to fit into places ordinary funnels won’t go. Or there’s the Multi-Task 5-in-1 Funnel with a flexible spout that can bend in several directions and is designed to securely hold a onelitre container of oil/fluid without it falling.

Other interesting funnels include: Giant funnel – designed especially for pouring large containers of fluid/fuel, to avoid spills. Super quick fill funnel – specially designed for economy-sized containers, it has a large diameter and extra-wide neck for quick pouring. Utility funnel – ideal for hard-to-reach places with its flexible spout, it also has special handholds to provide a better grip. Gas gauge funnel – this one’s great for use in a lawnmower fuel tank because it has an indicator that signals when the petrol is nearing the top, thus preventing spills and overfills. Measu-funnel – this patented device has a long spout that has measured markings and an on/off device so you can pre-pour precise amounts of oil/liquid before it goes into the engine, etc. Many of the FloTool funnels have in-built splash guards that make the job easier and keep the engine or vehicle clean. They are also constructed from high-quality materials that are resistant to attack from chemicals, fuel and oil. The FloTool range of funnels is available from hardware and automotive outlets throughout New Zealand, and prices for simple funnels start from just $4.25. reader reply 0120908

Tired of reaching for a torch in the car or at home, only to find the batteries are dead and there are no replacements? Narva now has the answer, in the shape of a compact and convenient USB rechargeable LED torch. With USB sockets becoming increasingly popular as a method of re-charging power accessories in new vehicles, as well as home and office computers, Narva believes its handy torch is ideal to have on standby for emergencies and to light up dark corners. The torch can be re-charged from any standard USB socket and it delivers a bright white light from the powerful LED bulbs. The Narva torch also features a useful built-in clip to attach to a cap or hat, turning it into a useful head-mounted light when both hands need to be free. A lanyard and key ring attachment is also supplied ensuring a convenient source of light is available whenever the need arises. Each torch is attractively blister packed making it the perfect practical economical gift. For retailers, ten torches come in a full display carton making an ideal display for placement at a check-out counter to create increased impulse sales. The Narva rechargeable LED torch (sold under part no. 81037BL) is available from automotive outlets through New Zealand with a recommended retail price of $26. reader reply 0120908a

Ford leaves no detail in the shade Can you look cool without sunglasses? Maybe not, so they are consistently among the top 10 items drivers carry in their cars, and accommodating this accessory is a priority for these Ford engineers. Ford engineers evaluated – and modelled – more than 100 pairs of sunglasses from designer frames to market stall knockoffs to achieve accurate dimensions of a wide range of shades. The goal was to ensure that more than 95 per cent of all sunglasses fit well into the 2013 Ford Mondeo overhead stowage bin. Talk about dedication to making it possible for every driver to look their best on sunny days.

8

www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz

Using the coordinate measuring machine – a laser scanning device that produces accurate, to-scale 3D models on the computer – the engineers scanned real sunglasses to simulate how different types would rest in the overhead container. “Older sunglasses holders were designed for thin, wire-framed pairs, but fashions have evolved toward thicker, plastic shades. So we changed the bins to keep up with the trends,” says core accommodation and usage engineer Seail Shreffer. For this team of Ford engineers, it’s all about style and size, whether it’s throwback wayfarers – that may actually have been purchased the

first time they were in style – or the ever-convenient clip-on sunglasses. No matter what look drivers are

going for, the 2013 Ford Mondeo will have a spot for almost any pair of shades. reader reply 0120908b

More options for summer riding

The new ExiGrip Outrigger bike rack swings away to allow easy access to the rear of an SUV or ute.

A bike rack accessory designed especially for owners of SUVs and utes provides drivers with easy access to the vehicle’s interior without having to remove the bikes and rack. Designed specifically for vehicles with a square hitch receiver towbar, the EziGrip Outrigger swings the rack and bikes away from the vehicle to provide access to the rear door or tailgate when the rack is in use.

“It’s a great solution and it works better than any other bike rack system for these types of vehicles,” says Stephen de Kriek, CEO for Best Bars Limited, which developed the world leading EziGrip range of bike racks. “With the EziGrip Outrigger, SUV and ute owners can now have full access to the rear of their vehicle whilst their bikes remain securely fixed to the rack.” Mr de Kriek says the Outrigger accessory can

be used with the full range of EziGrip modular bike racks. Like the rest of the EziGrip range, the new Outrigger is manufactured from quality materials and it is designed to take the weight of up to four bikes. The Outrigger is one of a number of additions to the Ezi-Grip range announced in time for the upcoming spring and summer cycling seasons. Other new products include the Ezi-Grip Advantage Series racks in two-bike and four-bike models. The Advantage Series rack was launched to satisfy budget-conscious users, whilst still retaining many of the features found in the highend EziGrip Modular Series. “We had an excellent response when we first introduced Advantage Series racks and feedback from customers has led us to expand the range, so that we can continue meet their requirements,” says Mr de Kriek. The EziGrip Advantage Series racks feature the unique cradle and upturned prong-end design, offering more protection for your bike than other towbar mounted prong racks. Bungees are included to fix your bikes to the rack. While it may be competitively priced, there is no skimping on quality. The foam is of high quality construction to ensure maximum protection for bikes, while the twin tie-down points and twin cap screws are safety features not often found on racks of a similar price. Projecta takes control of the sun Solar panels are becoming increasingly popular with campers and recreational boaties to keep the batteries on their vehicles and craft charged, but they require regulating to prevent damage. Projecta has released a range of state-of-the-art solar controllers to regulate solar power up to 30A in either 12 or 24Volts for the New Zealand market. Whilst solar panels capture the sunlight converting it into useable electric power, the Projecta solar controllers regulate this power to avoid damage to the battery through excessive charge or through discharge at night. Charging in either two-stage for automotive batteries or three-stage for deep cycle batteries, these controllers can also manage a direct DC load. Each of the controllers has been designed to be left connected to the battery indefinitely to keep it fully charged, monitoring its condition and perform a process called ‘float’ charge to maintain the battery in optimum condition. Two-stage controllers are suitable for use on automotive batteries, whilst the three-stage controllers can be used on both automotive and deep cycle batteries. The additional stage refers to the ‘absorption’, which ensures the battery receives a full and comprehensive charge that is delivered in a better pattern, whilst at the same

time monitoring its condition to ensure it is not overcharged. Entry level Projetca models deliver 12V 7Amp and 10Amp, offering basic charging control via a two-stage process. These are considered the minimum controllers required to provide protection against solar overcharge and discharge. The four Projecta three-stage controllers in the programme are 12/24Volt and come in 10A, 20A, a 20A with remote meter and a 30A controller with a built in display panel. Each of the three-stage controllers has an ON/ OFF maximum load control switch, plus a low voltage disconnect to prevent battery damage through over-discharging the battery. An easyto-read LED charge indicator displays a quick reference guide to the operational status. The ultimate three-stage Solar Charge Controller is the automatic 12/24V 30A units (Part No. SC330), which is ideal for deep cycle

batteries often found in caravans, motor homes, boats and remote holiday homes and baches/ cribs. This precisely controls the power generated from the solar panels to deliver a three-stage charge, maximising battery life and performance. The controls on the panel of this model allow a user to directly switch the DC load ON/OFF. A built-in LCD screen displays charge rate, battery level and power usage data and a built-in sensor adjusts the output according to the ambient temperature. reader reply 0120910a

Wankel passes into history

On June 22 this year the last Wankel production engine – a Renesis destined for a home in an RX-8 Spirit R (such as the car pictured here) rolled off the line at Mazda’s Hiroshima plant, heralding the final chapter of more than 45 years of rotary engine development by the Japanese manufacturer. The rotary engine and rotary compressor were originally the brain child of German engineer Dr Felix Wankel, who established his own development laboratory in 1924 when he was just 22 years of age. In 1957 Wankel and then German motorcycle and car manufacturer NSU completed a prototype of the DKM type rotary engine which combined a cocoon-shaped housing with a triangular rotor. The rotary engine was born at last. However the complicated structure of the DKM saw the trochoid housing itself rotate which made this type of engine impractical for production. A more practical KKM engine with a fixed housing was completed in 1958. Although it had a more complicated cooling system that included a water-cooled trochoid with an oil cooled rotor, the 400cc KKM became the prototype of the current rotary engine. NSU officially announced the completion of the Wankel rotary engine in November 1959 and Mazda’s then president Mr Tsuneji Matsuda saw the potential of this engine and negotiated directly with NSU, signing a formal contract in 1961. While testing the single rotor 400cc NSU-built rotary engine in 1961, Mazda independently made it’s own rotary prototype in house. Both engines were affected by ‘chatter marks’ which were wavy traces of abnormal wear on the inside surface of the trochoid housing. These marks were made by the apex seal of the rotor juddering rather than sliding smoothly – because the seal was vibrating at its inherent natural frequency. Another problem was thick white smoke caused by oil leaking into the combustion chamber leading

12

www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz

to excessive consumption. Mazda solved both problems by developing a special oil seal with the co-operation of the Nippon Piston Ring Company and the Nippon Oil Seal Company. During the initial stages of the Mazda rotary engine in the 1960s the company investigated and designed three types of rotary engine, those with two rotors, three rotors and four rotors. The single-rotor prototypes made by NSU could run smoothly at high speeds, but in the low speed range this type tended to be unstable with high vibration levels and little torque. This is because a single rotor engine has only one combustion phase per revolution of the output shaft, resulting in a large torque conversion, which is a basic characteristic of this engine format. Mazda decided it would develop a two-rotor engine in which the torque fluctuations were expected to be at the same level as a reciprocating 4-stroke, 6-cylinder engine. On May 30, 1967 Mazda began selling the world’s first two-rotor rotary engine the Cosmo Sport with the 491cc twin-rotor 10A engine (produced from 1967 to 1972). The 10A engine was equipped apex seals made with pyro-graphite, a high strength carbon material, and specially processed aluminium sintering. The intake system featured a side port configuration coupled with a two-stage four barrel carburettor, to keep combustion stable at all speeds. For the ignition system each rotor was equipped with two spark plugs so stable combustion could be maintained in hot and cold weather as well as when the car was used in urban streets and motorways. Mazda went on to develop more engines in its rotary stable, including the 573cc twin-rotor 12A engine produced from 1971 to 1985, and the 654cc twin-rotor 13B engine in various guises including fuel-injected turbocharged versions from 1974 to 1995.

By Robert Barry

The Mazda Cosmo Coupe launched in April 1990 was the world’s first series production car with a three-rotor rotary engine, the 654cc type 20B-REW with a sequential twin turbocharging system. The following year a Mazda 787B racing car powered by a four-rotor unit took victory at Le Mans proving the power and efficiency of the engine design. For the launch of the Mazda RX-8 in 2003 a new more efficient naturally-aspirated engine was developed known as the Rotary Engine-Genesis, hence the name Renesis was coined. The high power version of the Renesis 654cc x 2 rotor engine developed 184 kilowatts at 8,500 rpm and 216 Newton metres of torque at 5,500rpm, while the standard unit developed 154kW at 7,200 rpm and 222 Newton metres of torque at 5,000 rpm. Despite the more than 40 year development of Rotary engine development, the consumption of the Renesis was still high in comparison to reciprocating engines but the final death knell for Mazda was the failure of the engine to meet 2010 Euro 5 emissions for Europe. reader reply 0120912

Solutions for professional service centres

1) Spraying the Cyclo air intake system cleaner into the air intake.

2) The aerosol combustion chamber cleaner is designed to work at any angle, including upside down as shown here.

Distributed in New Zealand by D R Britton Limited, the Cyclo professional service centre solution kit was originally designed by Florida USA based Cyclo Industries for global after sales service network of General Motors. All Cyclo professional automotive chemical products are manufactured in the USA and Canada to US market requirements and are distributed from there to global markets. Cyclo says the products are manufactured to meet the needs of automotive professionals

by also meeting OEM certifications, as well as USA environmental and OSH requirements. Inside the Cyclo professional service centre solution kit are three products for engine and fuel system maintenance; these being an aerosol combustion chamber cleaner, an aerosol air intake system cleaner and a bottle of Max 44 fuel system/fuel injector cleaner. Cyclo says the combustion chamber aerosol cleaner reduces intake valve

deposits for optimum air/fuel flow into the combustion chambers, and also reduces deposits in the chambers themselves. This increases power and performance, reduces pinging and knocking, and improves fuel consumption and emissions. According to Cyclo, the aerosol air intake system cleaner decontaminates sensors for correct air flow control and removes accumulated dirt and varnishes from linkages for trouble free operation and improved starting

and idle quality. Cyclo says the Max 44 fuel system cleaner improves fuel flow and engine starting by removing fuel gums and varnishes from the fuel system, as well as deposits from fuel injectors. This also reduces fuel consumption and emissions. D R Britton and Cyclo staff members recently visited a number of New Zealand workshops to demonstrate the effectiveness of the service centre solution kit, including David Storey Motors in Rosedale where the pictures above

According to Cyclo, this combination of the three products will clean the engine and fuel system of a petrol powered vehicle in just 30 minutes in three steps. Step 1- Five minutes • Remove the air intake tube from the intake manifold Spray the Cyclo air intake system cleaner into the air intake cleaning all moving parts and linkages. This is done in two stages, first with the engine switched off and then with the engine running. • Re-attach the air-intake tube Step 2 – 15 minutes • Remove the patented metered aerator nozzle from the top of the aerosol cap • Search for a direct vacuum port to the intake manifold – the PCV valve outlet / Brake Booster line are usually the most accessible. • Disconnect the vacuum hose from the PCV valve/Brake booster and insert the tapered end of the aerator nozzle into the hose. • Start the engine – aerator nozzle will not leak. • Connect the combustion chamber cleaner container to the aerator nozzle. • Increase the engine speed to above idle (1,000 to 1,200 rpm) and depress the actuator in prolonged bursts to release the cleaner into the vacuum stream. • Aerosol combustion chamber cleaner can be released with the container pointed in any direction, as the spray all way valve is designed to work at any angle, including upside down. • Use all the cleaner for one service, shut off the engine when the container is empty, disconnect the can from the aerator nozzle, remove the nozzle from the vacuum line and reconnect securely. Step 3 – Five minutes • Clean under hood area, collect tools and close the hood. • Add the bottle of fuel system cleaner to the fuel tank. • Then increase the engine rpm to about 2500 rpm and then release it and again raise the rpm to 2500. Continue this for a two to three minutes untill the engine clears all the residue. Take the vehicle for a short test drive. There will be a noticeable

Hella lights the way for success

Another graphic demonstration of the state of the art Hella Luminator LED driving lights in action during Rainer Zietlow’s world record drive.

Hella Australia marketing manager Tomas Plessinger and the three world record drivers (from left), Marius Biela, Vladimir Gagarin and Rainer Zietlow.

Hella congratulates Rainer Zietlow, Marius Biela and Vladimir Gagarin on successfully establishing a new world driving distance record, having driven from from Melbourne, Australia to St Petersburg, Russia in 17 days, 18 hours and 49 minutes. That’s 23,000 km driven virtually non-stop since July 27, 2012 when multiple world record endurance driver Zietlow and his two co-drivers set out from Melbourne Town Hall to attempt this incredible road journey. As to be expected with a journey of this distance that crossed nine countries and all manner of road conditions, the trip was not without its problems. Despite some mechanical set backs and the occasional puncture, Zietlow managed to limit vehicle downtime to just one day and a half. Their issues included having punctured the engine radiator in East Timor and a ferry engine that broke down forcing the chartering of another boat as they made their way

through the archipelago of Indonesia. The Hella Luminator LED driving lights fitted to the near standard Volkswagen Touareg V6 TDI performed brilliantly throughout the world record drive, particularly on what Zietlow described as some of the worst road conditions that they had ever encountered in any of his past world record drive efforts, particularly during the overnight runs. “One thing that was never a concern on this world record trip was our ability to light up the roads at night with our Hella Luminator LED driving lamps. These, combined with the Touareg’s own premium quality Xenon lights, which are also made by Hella, ensured that we had an excellent view of the road conditions when driving through the night. I am glad that we could show how great the LED driving laps performed throughout this world record trip,”says Zietlow. “Some of the pothole-ridden roads were absolutely terrible, so it was important for us to be able to identify

Nothing compares to the brightness and durability of the Hella Luminator LED driving light as shown in this image during Rainer Zietlow’s world record drive from Melbourne to St Petersburg.

the larger road hazards, along with wildlife as quickly as possible, to ensure that we kept the Touareg in one piece,” he says. Zietlow will embark on a number of international road shows for the remainder of 2012, displaying the world record breaking car at various Hella and Volkswagen dealers throughout Europe, Russia and Germany, South East Asia and in Australia. The car will also be displayed at public and trade show events around the world including the Automechanika trade fairs in both Russia and Germany. Zietlow has also provided a donation of 10 Euro cents for each kilometre driven on the drive from Melbourne to St.Petersburg to a Plan International children’s project in Laos. This donation will be presented during the South East Asia roadshow. Motoring enthusiasts can find out more about this world record drive, view images and video taken along the route at www.touareg-russtralia.com. 17 days, 18 hours and 49 minutes after leaving Melbourne, at 4:30am on August 13, the Hella equipped Volkswagen Touareg V6 TDI, with Rainer Zietlow at the wheel, rolled into St Petersburg (Russia) establishing a new world record for long distance driving.

specifications and are engineered to provide superior handling and control in both off-road and on-road driving. Their long-travel design allows for increased articulation to keep the wheels in contact with the ground, thus retaining traction. They are engineered to withstand high-speed shock movement over unmade roads, typically found when off the beaten track in New Zealand. Such rapid movement generates

considerable heat, which can quickly render a sub-standard shock absorber ineffective. Skorched4s have been designed and tested to match Kings coil and leaf springs and are accurately valved to control springs for both on-road and off-road conditions, minimising unnecessary movement and providing the driver with sure-footed control. KYB employs a four-step top seal to keep dirt and other foreign matter out, incorporating increased diameter bodies and 16mm piston rods to maximise oil volume in the working cylinder. Greater oil volume results in slower heat build up, thereby extending shock absorber life KYB is the world’s largest OE manufacturer of shock absorbers and not only supplies to Japanese and European companies, but also American, Australian and Korean manufacturers. It is one of the largest manufacturers of shock absorbers for the aftermarket too. Its plant in Japan produces over three million shock absorbers per month, and every shock is tested on a dynamometer to ensure it is performing at 100 percent. reader reply 0120918

these components. All the point of sale information is available on the Meyle web site as well as a comprehensive parts catalogue www.meyle.com Meyle develops control arm for the BMW 5, 6 and 7 series (Pic 1)

Meyle has developed a new HD control arm which can be fitted as a replacement in the BMW 5,6 and 7 series range of vehicles. Thanks to the smooth graduation adjustment of the ball joint, the control arm replaces three different versions of the original part. Not only the ball joint has been constructed so that it can be replaced individually, the reinforced bushing can also be exchanged on its own too. To make the HD control arm from Meyle more durable than the original version, the ball joint of the HD control arm has a high-grade corrosion coating and a ball cup made of abrasion-proof synthetic material to ensure a long lifespan. It is made of high-grade aluminium in order to absorb all the forces acting between the bodywork and the wheels. The bearings used are made of full rubber with an enlarged profile crosssection. The suspension properties are adjusted to those of the original part, so that there is no noticeable loss of driving comfort. This part is due for release in October 2012. Specialists in steering and suspension Replacing a single shock absorber that has failed due to a visual warrant of fitness inspection creates a handling

anomaly that could possibly be more dangerous than driving around on worn shock absorbers, according to Autolign product marketing manager Kris Taunt. “If more consumers were aware of this safety issue or if they were better educated about the dangers of single shock absorber replacement then it would be better all round for the industry,” he says. Taunt says that Autolign has made submissions on this practice to the NZTA as part of the governmentled review on the current vehicle relicensing/inspection system. “We hope that there will be a focus in the new regulations for vehicle inspection that will address the concerns we have about the unsafe practices in relationship to replacing and repairing worn shock absorbers and other suspension parts.” Autolign are the agents for Monroe, Tein and Bilstein Shock absorbers, as well as the Nolathane, Dobisport, B&G, and Whiteline suspension brands. The high-performance Tein and Bilstein gas pressurised shock

absorbers which it supplies to resellers and the trade can also be repaired and rebuilt in its specialist Racelign engineering facility in Mount Wellington. Bilstein are so particular about the repair of its shock absorber product that Racelign has two specialist re-gassing units within its workshop solely for Bilstein units as well as a Roehrig shock dynometer which tests the bump and rebound behavior of

all shock absorbers which are rebuilt on site. Bilstein is the OEM supplier of shock absorbers to many highperformance European as well as Japanese brands and Racelign provides rebuilt shock absorbers to Subaru New Zealand as part of their warranty exchange programme. Racelign service manager Iain Wilson has been involved in the servicing and rebuilding of shock absorbers and suspension for more than 20 years and oversees the facility which also makes custommade urethane bushes and mounts, shortens shock absorbers, and fabricates suspension components. Iain says that Racelign will custombuild suspensions for modified, drifting, circuit racing, rally, targa, and

off-road vehicles. “We carry a full range of spare parts to ensure vehicle downtime is kept to a minimum. Piston shafts, piston valves, adjustable height parts, adjustable strut mounts, and competition springs etc – all that is needed for a fast and efficient rebuild or upgrade” “We also manufacture bushes, engine and transmission mounts as well as harmonic balancers and drive couplings,” says Iain. “We’ve developed bushes for particular applications and we’ll work with customers to provide a solution for their specific needs. “With three lathes and one mill in the engineering shop, there isn’t much we cannot make from scratch, and we are often asked by customers to make oneoff small volume items such as a torque arm bush for a Volvo Bus (pictured).” reader reply 0120920

The importance of brake fluid the brakes worked perfectly again after the system has cooled down and the vapour has condensed. Presence of vapour in the brake fluid also affects the performance of the anti-lock brake systems (ABS). The ABS pulsates about 15 times a second and the brake fluid’s viscosity is an important factor for the proper operation of the ABS. The presence of moisture and/ or vapour in the brake fluid alters its viscosity characteristics and will result in improper operation of the ABS. DOT 4 and DOT 3 Brake Fluids

Many motorists will drive between 15,000 to 20,000 km a year in their vehicle and during that time the engine oil will be changed, the coolant levels checked, the wiper blades replaced and the brake pads and rotors will more than likely be checked. But do motorists know that a car’s brake fluid also needs to be checked and replaced regularly? Many OEMs and maintenance experts recommend that brake fluid be changed at least every two years. Why? Please read on. What is brake fluid?

Brake fluid is basically a hydraulic fluid that actuates a car’s brake system when the driver steps on the brake pedal. As a fluid that transmits force, an important property of the brake fluid is that it should be non-compressible so that it effectively transmits braking force to the wheels at all times. As brake fluids are exposed to very high temperatures during braking, these should have very high boiling points so that they remain incompressible even during extreme braking. America’s Department of Transportation (DOT) has set the pace in putting in place a standard for brake fluids. The motor industry has adapted two main standards – DOT 3 and DOT 4. There are other types of brake fluid in use but most vehicles use either DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid so we will stick with these two for purposes of this discussion. The table below shows the boiling point standards. Note that the Australian standard has a more stringent boiling point requirement than the internationally accepted American DOT standard. Note that the Bendix line of brake fluids conforms to both the DOT

standards and the Australian standards and in fact exceed these standards by a wide margin. Brake fluid is a glycol-based fluid that remains fluid even when freezing and remains effective as a hydraulic fluid even at high temperatures. It is expected to work in freezing winter and in extremely hot summer months. It is a versatile fluid that does its job in all temperature extremes. However, brake fluid by nature absorbs moisture from the atmosphere through the microscopic pores in brake lines and through the small vent in the reservoir. In fact brake fluid begins to take in moisture the moment you pour it into your brake system. After a year in service, brake fluid would have absorbed about two percent water and will have progressed to three percent water after only 18 months. These figures would be a lot higher in places that are humid and wet. Moisture in brake fluid decreases its boiling point – two percent water will reduce the brake fluid’s boiling point by 75°C. The boiling point drop becomes more pronounced as more moisture is absorbed. Moisture contamination heightens the risk of brake failure, especially during extreme braking conditions like driving downhill or in constant stop and go in heavy traffic or when carrying heavy loads. Constant braking transmits a lot of heat to the brake fluid from the pads and rotors. If a considerable degree of moisture was present, this would easily boil off and form vapour which is extremely compressible and this is when the pedal starts feeling spongy and the brakes would not apply at all! This is the reason why there have been many cases of brake failures even if the braking systems were found to be mechanically in order. In fact,

Bendix DOT3 230 Min 140

From the table below, we can see that the main difference between DOT 4 and DOT 3 brake fluids is that DOT 4 brake fluids have higher minimum dry and wet boiling points – and this is why majority of car makers recommend DOT 4 brake fluid over DOT 3 as it provides an extra margin of safety. Both are made from glycol ethers but DOT 4 brake fluids have borate esters added to give them that improved dry and wet boiling points. DOT 4 maximum viscosity specifications are also slightly higher than that of DOT 3. Often not mentioned is the effect of the different DOT 4 formulation on the brake fluid behaviour. DOT 4 absorbs moisture at a slower rate than DOT 3 but is more susceptible to suffering a drop in its boiling point. Typically a DOT 4 brake fluid will suffer a boiling point drop of 50 percent once it takes in two percent moisture while a DOT 3 brake fluid would only lose 25 percent of its boiling point at three percent moisture contamination although it takes in moisture at a faster rate. This suggests that DOT 4 brake fluids offer more stability and safety for longer but would need to be replaced at the recommended OEM intervals before it suffers a substantial drop in boiling point. Some cars have had their brake systems designed before DOT 4 brake fluid was introduced. Their hoses, which inner linings are made of SBR rubber, were found not to be compatible with some DOT 4 formulations in a laboratory setting – possibly those with very high borate ester content. In a report, it is claimed that DOT 4 brake fluid permeates the inner lining and then reacts with the outer PVA reinforcement braiding producing a viscous liquid which could build up between layers of rubber and makes the hose considerably weakened. Attempts to reproduce this problem in real life conditions have proven to be difficult though. Some Australian vehicle manufacturers may still use brake hoses made with SBR hence their recommendation to stick with DOT 3. Most vehicle marques today use a different rubber (EPDM) in their brake hoses which is much less subject to permeation. Most car makers have taken the view that the extra safety offered by DOT 4 more than outweighed the miniscule risk of hose failure caused by the reaction described above. Bendix DOT4 260 Min 155

More innovation from Schaeffler

This year’s Automechanika celebrated the premiere of the LuK RepSet 2CT – a repair solution from Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket for dry doubleclutch transmissions, the first of its kind in the independent aftermarket. Besides having a double clutch, each LuK RepSet 2CT contains two engagement levers, two engagement bearings, adjusting shims and the required mounting hardware – everything needed to replace an entire double-clutch system. All parts are of course original-equipment (OE) quality. With the special tool for professional disassembly and assembly, a comprehensive training program, technical brochures, a detailed repairinstruction manual and a training video, independent repairers will be able to repair double-clutch systems for the first time. Another highlight at Automechanika was the FAG brand’s new wheel bearing repair solution for light commercial vehicles. Specially conceived for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Vito and Viano as well as the VW Crafter, Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket says this repair solution delivers garages a time saving of up to 60 percent when removing and replacing a wheel bearing unit. This benefit is possible because only the wheel bearings are replaced and not, as has been done until now, the complete axle bracket. Schaeffler also exhibited the LuK Clutch Facing HD 30 PLUS – a latest-generation clutch facing repair solution for vehicles with disc sizes 430mm, 400mm and 360mm – ideal for use in the heavy-duty commercial vehicle segment. The advantage of the HD 30 PLUS – conceived for use in OEM commercial vehicles it delivers outstanding quality and comfort attributes. This means less downtime and more road-time, a noticeable improvement in costeffectiveness and – depending on conditions and how a vehicle is driven

– up to 30 percent longer service life of the clutch system. Also on show at Automechanika 2012 was RepXpert. This is Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket’s recently introduced internet portal that has proven to be incredibly popular with automotive repairers with an impressive 103,000 registered users worldwide. This globally orientated online service offers technical information, repair and installation tips to independent repairers across all vehicle segments, manufacturers

and models. The RepXpert on line resource information is updated daily and it is also available in eight different languages. Designed to meet the ever changing information needs of independent aftermarket repairers, this detailed online service resource to Australian and New Zealand workshop owners and technicians shortly. The RepXpert portal features detailed audio visual content to assist repairers and a full on line catalogue to check the availability and order specific Schaeffler Automotive

Aftermarket LuK, FAG and INA clutch, drive train, wheel bearing and engine components to meet exact manufacturer specifications. Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket also launched a new information resource to the RepXpert portal at Automechanika 2012 for Tools. This becomes the fifth expert section added to this industry focussed on line portal, joining engine parts, drive train, workshop management and chassis technology. reader reply 0120923

Dual mass and single mass flywheels What is a dual mass flywheel?

The dual mass flywheel (DMF) derives its name from the two main components (or masses) that operate independently of each other. The primary component

(or mass) is fitted with a ring gear and sensor ring (if applicable) and is attached to the crankshaft. This primary component usually incorporates a dampening mechanism typically made up of torsion springs and friction washer that are ideally suited to absorb torsional vibrations within the drive train. The clutch unit is then bolted onto the secondary component. Quite simply, a DMF is a damper for the drive train according to Exedy. A DMF can fail for a number of reasons but the most common cause will be wear and tear. When it comes to replacement of a worn DMF system the cost can be prohibitive. As such, Exedy says it has developed a range of Single Mass Flywheels (SMF) which are sold together with the clutch cover assembly, clutch disc assembly and release bearing to replace the DMF clutch system.

The benefits of SMF VS DMF systems:

According to Exedy, the main advantage of an SMF clutch package is the price – these systems are generally a cheaper option. Because the SMF has no moving components, it can be machined and re-installed into the vehicle when a subsequent new clutch is fitted which also reduces the future cost of maintaining the clutch system. The conventional SMF is extremely robust and are the preferred choice for racing or commercial applications. The SMF replacement clutch system does not, however, produce the same dampening characteristics as a DMF and on occasion, may not sound or feel like the DMF system that is being replaced. Always communicate the pros and cons of replacing the DMF or of fitting an SMF in its place to the customer enabling them to make an informed decision on the application that will best suit their budget and needs. A very popular Subaru application is the FJK7374SMF and for the Nissan Navara and Pathfinder models fitted with Turbo Diesel engines, EXEDY would recommend the NSK-7704SMF, which suits current to late model vehicles. TRD edition boosts Toyota 86

Toyota recently announced full details of its TRD86 Special Edition. The Toyota racing development (TRD) package is now available on both grades of Toyota 86. Toyota New Zealand General Manager of Product Planning, Neeraj Lala, said, “We’ve had a lot of interest in the TRD86 since announcing our plans back in June. Based on demand, we’re excited to announce that the TRD package will be available for the GT86 as well as the standard 86 model.” Only 20 examples of the TRD model will be created initially, with customers able to choose their preferred vehicle grade, transmission and colour before the vehicle is built to order by Toyota-trained engineers at our Thames Vehicle Operations Centre, the home of 86 customisation. “We’re building this car for diehard sports car fans

and race enthusiasts. It’s a car that you can up and take straight to the racetrack. It’s got top-of-theline components from TRD, including a TRD brake package by Brembo, to showcase the best bolt-on equipment developed for the 86,” says Mr Lala. “Our dealers have started taking orders for the TRD86, and we’re confident that all 20 will be on the road very soon. “We know that some enthusiasts will want to drive their 86 stock standard before starting their own customisation project. We’re looking forward to supporting these customers with a great range of accessories and customisation ideas. For customers who don’t want to wait, the TRD86 is a great solution. It’s a competitively-priced package with all of the labour and certification costs built in.” The TRD86 has a Toyota racing development front

spoiler, side skirts, rear lower bumper and boot spoilers, forged aluminium 18 inch alloy wheels, a high response muffler with four-tip exhaust and TRD brake package by Brembo. A TRD badge, TRD sports air filter, TRD key ring, TRD radiator and oil filler caps are also included, as is a red TRD push start button for vehicles based on the GT86 grade. All TRD86 are individually numbered and are supplied with a certificate of authenticity signed by Toyota New Zealand CEO Alistair Davis. Low Volume Vehicle (LVV) certification is required, and will be arranged by Toyota New Zealand prior to delivery. The Special Edition TRD86 as a recommended retail price of $63,486 for the manual version and $64,486 for the automatic. TRD versions built off the GT86 are priced at $68,486 and $69,486 for the manual and automatic models respectively. reader reply 0120926

TNZ parts sales assistant manager Paul Bowness says that Toyota New Zealand has increased the range of fast-moving parts that are available to the trade and have reviewed the pricing structure to make life easier for trade customers. “We’ve got one price on each generic fast moving part, which makes it easy for the trade to be able to price up a service or a repair,” he says. “This allows trade garages to have the benefits of genuine Toyota parts and it saves them time

and increases workshop efficiency as technicians don’t have to ring around multiple suppliers looking for the best price on a part.” reader reply 0120926a

Winger Hyundai and 30/30 – a winning combination

Because of Hyundai’s rapid sales growth in the last decade, the local Kiwi car park has expanded significantly and there are a greater number of vehicles which are now more than five years old. These are the vehicles that tend to end up at a trade garage or service centre rather than a dealership for maintenance repairs, but they can still be serviced using Hyundai genuine parts thanks to the 30/30 real deal program. Introduced in the first quarter of 2011, the Hyundai genuine parts 30/30 real deal offers all trade customers a 30 percent discount off 30 common Hyundai service items for older models such as the Sonata, Getz and Tucson. Winger Hyundai after sales manager

Nigel Ackers says the Hyundai genuine parts 30/30 real deal has been an overwhelming success with Winger’s trade customers. Last year saw a more than 120 percent increase in trade sales through the Winger Hyundai parts department. “I think 30/30 is the best thing that’s happened at Hyundai, and customers can earn get genuine rewards points too,” says Nigel. To further enhance its 30/30 real deal offer to the service trade, Winger Hyundai have gone “old school” according to Nigel, by appointing a sales representative to call on the more than 350 customers within its dealership territory. As well as the 30/30 program Winger Hyundai also sells replacement panels, windscreens and other mechanical items. According to Nigel Winger, Hyundai services one of the biggest dealer territories in the Hyundai network being central, east and western Auckland. Of the more than 350 customers on the Winger Hyundai database which continues to grow, Nigel says more than 150 are regular customers and having a dedicated trade sales representative is further proof of the dealerships support for them and their customers. “We keep a large stock of the 30/30 real deal products on hand, and we’ve seen a definite rise the in amount of service items sold to the trade customers such as brake pads, hoses and cam belts,” says Nigel.

“Certainly the more stringent inspection process implemented through the warrant of fitness testing in recent times has seen consumable items such as hoses being replaced more frequently. “We have more than 2,300 stock items within the Winger Hyundai parts department, which are predominantly fast-moving items, and we try very hard to ensure our fulfillment rates remain

high. I would say that 75 percent of our mechanical parts are sent out on to a customer on the first pick. “We also analyse our parts stock on a monthly basis to measure any changes in demand or identify new trends in parts being required by the trade customers, and if we see we need more of one particular parts line then we’ll get more stock in to meet that demand.” reader reply 0120928

More to view at Autopromotec 2013 Autopromotec, the international exhibition for automotive equipment and aftermarket products (22 - 26 May 2013, Bologna trade fair centre, Italy), has announced the creation of the ‘Diagnostic Hub’, a new exhibition space being launched at the 2013 show that is set to be the largest ever dedicated to the sector. Autopromotec’s organisers have announced that two pavilions will be opened (numbers 14 and 15) covering a surface area of nearly 20,000 square metres entirely dedicated to diagnostic equipment for the automotive industry. The initiative responds to the growing interest that Autopromotec has received from diagnostic instrument manufacturers both in Italy and around the world. Existing Autopromotec exhibitors have also expressed a wish to increase the size of their stands because of the growing interest in the show, and in the diagnostics field. The creation of the Diagnostic Hub is more than a change of location and expansion of the diagnostics exhibition space, which was previously located in the smaller pavilion 30. It is also a sign of the intention to make Autopromotec stand out by developing a whole series of dedicated initiatives around this type of equipment, centered on providing essential training and information. The new Diagnostic Hub means that visitors to

Alongside the Diagnostic Hub, Autopromotec will also feature education seminars for the aftermarket, tyre and garage equipment, as well as truck repairs and the bi-annual focus on panel repair and paint equipment (as pictured here from 2011). reader reply 0120930a

Hino bolsters Australian defence capability

Hino Australia recently completed the delivery of a batch of 56 new Hino 4x4 medium-duty trucks to the Australian Defence Force (ADF) as part of a long-standing relationship between the two organisations. Hino’s all-terrain 500 Series GT 4x4 was chosen by ADF to fill a number of critical logistical roles around Australia, and have been configured in both GT 1322 standard cab and GT 1322 crewcab specification. The ADF has received more than 520 Hino trucks since 1995, actively deployed to varying multi-task roles, with the 500th vehicle presented to ADF personnel in late June. Hino’s GT 4x4 variants have been favoured by the Department because of their outstanding combination of reliability, durability and versatility, according to Hino government sales manager Tom Ayrton. “As Hino’s flagship 4x4 truck, the GT features a heavy-duty low-range four-wheel drive transfer case, and can be driven in 2WD-mode on-road to maximise economy. “Its performance and durability is well-proven as the GT is the base vehicle for Hino’s record-breaking Dakar Rally race truck, which is the only vehicle in Dakar history to have completed 21 consecutive race starts and finishes,” says Mr Ayrton The purpose-specification trucks are equipped with a heavy-duty steel tray and tarp, tailgate

loader, heavy-duty leaf spring suspension and all-terrain protection equipment such as Hino’s genuine alloy bullbar. The Defence trucks are also fitted with 11R 22.5 wheel and tyre combinations which will be the standard specification on all Hino 4x4 GT 500 Series models from July 2012 production. Mr Ayrton says Hino was able to meet an obligation to have the vehicles enter service by June 30 thanks to the efficiency of Hino’s production system and a network of local supply partners. “The first chassis did not arrive in Australia until late March and the last arrived in early June,” he said. “To get all 56 trucks completed with bodies and modifications and then delivered into service within three months is an outstanding achievement. “It required a substantial team effort from Hino’s Australian staff and Dealer network and key suppliers All Truck Bodies and VSE Engineering to get them ready in time,” he says.

financial year ending March 2012. As a result the Australian division has also received the prestigious Double Victory award in recognition of outstanding performance achievement in key parts and service divisions. Hino Australia divisional manager Greg Bleasel said the awards recognised the important role the Australian operation plays within Hino globally. “These awards reaffirm the positive work ethic and attitudes displayed by all members of the Hino Australia family, positioning the local operation as a model for the rest of the world,” he says. “The Australian Parts and Service operation has been a key focus for Hino, with a number of significant upgrades made to our facilities and processes over the last five years. “We’re honoured to receive these awards following on from our first placing at the inaugural Hino Kaizen rally held in February this year, which was presented in recognition of Hino Australia’s outstanding dedication in aftersales and Kaizen (Japanese for ‘continuous improvement’) achievement. “The investments we are making to better service our customers locally are fully supported by Hino Motors, meaning Hino owners can rely on parts and service being available where and when they need it,” he said. The recent awards cap a significant longterm upgrade project at Hino’s national Parts Distribution Centre in southern Sydney, which commenced in 2006. These facilities operate to world’s best practice and have been significantly expanded to cater for the growing Australian Hino customer base. The Hino network in Australia caters for all truck sales, customer parts and service needs with a total of 45 dealer sites, plus 10 service and parts outlets nationally. reader reply 0120931

Eni enters the market Multinational petroleum company Eni has undertaken a complete rebranding of its product range so the Agip oils and lubricants exclusively distributed in New Zealand by TransDiesel Ltd will from August be known as Eni oils and lubricants. Eni is the holding company for the Agip brand and the decision has been made to consolidate all operations and products under the one brand, Eni, rather than Agip. “We will continue to supply the same specialty oils and lubricants to customers in the construction, agricultural and transport sectors. The products will now be packaged under the consolidated Eni brand,” says TransDiesel chief executive Mike McKessar. “The Eni engine, gear, hydraulic, twostroke, motorcycle, and agricultural oils will have new packaging from August, as will antifreeze, brake fluid and other products. The Agip brand will disappear as our stock is replenished.” While Eni is Italy’s largest company and ranks 23rd in Fortune magazine’s 2011 list of the world’s biggest

corporations, this is the first time the brand will be visible in New Zealand. Agip was the founding Italian oil company established in 1926. In 2003 it was merged into Eni, an integrated, global energy company operating in exploration, the oil and gas market, electricity generation and sale, petrochemicals, oil field services, oil field construction and oil field engineering. Eni has recognised trademarks in around 70 countries and 73,000 employees. Now Eni is consolidating its global products and services under a single brand entity. The company’s fire-breathing sixlegged dog logo has an interesting history. It was designed by the famous Italian sculptor Luigi Broggini in 1952, but he was reluctant to take credit for it. His link to the design did not become public until after his death, so its meaning has remained a mystery and the subject of myth and debate over the years. His part dog, part dragon symbol, submitted in the name of the graphic artist, was chosen from 4,000 entries

in a lucrative competition to create the logo for Agip’s leading products. The image of the six-legged dog was a catalyst for Agip’s slogan, “loyal friend of the four-wheeled man’, which quickly came to represent not only the products, but Agip’s corporate culture. Now the logo has been updated and this global symbol of Eni will be seen in

New Zealand. TransDiesel is one of New Zealand’s top construction equipment and diesel engine supply companies, with an annual turnover over $100 million. The company employs more than 200 staff in 12 branches. reader reply 0120932

DuraLED Combi now available with DT connector

In the eight months since its launch, Hella says its new DuraLED Combi with reversing function has achieved significant popularity amongst commercial transport operators. Due to customer demand, Hella New Zealand has announced the launch of a new variant, which offers the 2380 DuraLED Combi with an inbuilt Deutsch socket (p/n 2380-DT). The DuraLED Combi 2380-DT, as with all lamps in the DuraLED Combi range, is fully-sealed to withstand submersion and high pressure water blasting. The incorporated 6 pole Deutsch socket allows the DuraLED Combi 2380-DT to be fitted quickly and easily to preinstalled wire looms. In the unlikely event of a breakage, a lamp can quickly be replaced, reducing downtime and rewiring costs. The DuraLED Combi 2380-DT is also available with a Grilamid lens (p/n 2380-DTGMD); a material developed to be strong and durable for rough conditions. In addition to being resistant to physical damage, Grilamid is suitable for use in applications exposed to corrosive effluent and chemicals. Hella recognises that due to the harsh nature of commercial transport, physical breakages may occur and it is committed to supplying replacement products for a minimum of 10 years after the product has been superseded by a newer model. This gives peace of mind that an investment into Hella ‘Fit and Forget’ lighting can be serviced with Hella products of the same functionality, connector pin configuration, optical and aesthetic appearance, year after year. reader reply 0120932a

Diesel engine exhaust now classified as carcinogenic Hyundai

AtSource Extraction Systems are the New Zealand distributor for Nederman, the world leader in dust and fume removal systems. Atsource says it is the leading provider of vehicle exhaust extract systems throughout NZ and is a supplier to NZ Fire Service – keeping our nations rescuers healthy. Nederman systems all provide direct connection to the vehicle exhaust pipe. This ensures that exhaust emissions are contained in a sealed system, from the vehicle right through to the exterior of the building. This provides very effective protection for staff working on the vehicles, staff in nearby offices and also customers dropping off/collecting their vehicles, by ensuring the fumes do not enter the work environment. Systems range from single stationary vehicle installations, up to multi-vehicle systems that are suitable for connection to moving vehicles. There are many types of hoses and nozzles to suit all makes and models of cars and trucks.

After a week-long meeting of international experts in June in Lyon, France, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is part of the World Health Organization (WHO), classified diesel engine exhaust as carcinogenic to humans based on sufficient evidence that exposure is associated with an increased risk for lung cancer. In 1988, IARC classified diesel exhaust as probably carcinogenic to humans. There has been mounting concern about the cancer-causing potential of diesel exhaust, particularly based on findings in epidemiological studies of workers exposed in various settings. The scientific evidence was reviewed thoroughly by the working group and overall it was concluded that there was sufficient evidence in humans for the carcinogenicity of diesel exhaust. The working group found that diesel exhaust is a cause of lung cancer and also noted a positive association with an increased risk of bladder cancer. The working group concluded that petrol exhaust was possibly carcinogenic to humans – a finding unchanged from the previous evaluation in 1989.

AtSource says it has completed many installations throughout New Zealand, and can provide a full engineered solution specific to the requirements of any workshop or service facility. www.atsource.co.nz reader reply 0120933

Symptoms associated with acute/short term exposures to diesel particulates include headache, nausea, dizziness, cough, asthma triggers, bronchitis and irritation of the eyes, nose and throat. Potential longer term effects include cardiovascular disease, stroke, high blood pressure, emphysema, as well as lung and bladder cancer. While large populations are exposed to diesel exhaust in everyday life through their occupation, there are many employees in New Zealand who are already protected from these harmful emissions. Who wouldn’t want to be protected from known carcinogens?

Many New Zealand organisations have been proactive in eliminating diesel fumes from their workplace using vehicle exhaust extraction systems from AtSource Extraction Systems, based on the earlier classifications that diesel and petrol exhaust was probably carcinogenic to humans. AtSource Extraction Systems have been installed in over 300 installations throughout New Zealand and the Pacific. www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz

Masons win 2012 NZ Rally championship Bernard Carpinter reports

Richard and Sara Mason, seen here at Gisborne in their Subaru, were clearly the top team in the 2012 NZ Rally Championship

Husband-and-wife team Richard and Sara Mason have secured their fourth New Zealand Rally Championship and done so in emphatic style, finishing the 2012 season 45 points ahead of the field. They clinched the title by winning the first leg of the final round, Rally Gisborne, in their BNT Subaru

Impreza STI. Their season then ended in an anticlimactic fashion as their car stopped on the second leg, but they had clearly proved their superiority. The Masons also enjoyed taking a more gung-ho approach to their sport this season. Last year the points structure was changed to put much more

emphasis on winning the overall rally over the two or three legs, rather than winning the individual legs. Richard Mason thought that placed too much emphasis on finishing rallies so deliberately adopted a more conservative approach, instead of going allout to win each leg. Hayden Paddon – who won the 2011 Production World Championship – contested three rounds of his home series last year and won them, but the Masons drove in all five rounds and their focus on consistency paid off as they came out on top at the end of the season. However they did not enjoy that approach so much and before the start of this season Mason said now they just wanted to press on, win as many legs as they could and enjoy going really fast. Richard Mason has always attributed part of his success to Sara’s ability as a co-driver. She is a quick rally driver herself and Richard says this helps her work as a co-driver. “She knows when to call out the notes,” he says. The 2012 Brian Green Property Group New

Winning couple -- Sara and Richard Mason on the podium after winning Rally Hawke’s Bay last year

Zealand Rally Championship, powered by Brother, did not start so well for the Masons – they failed to finish the first leg at Whangarei and came second in leg two. But after that they won every leg till the failure in the final leg at Gisborne. “We had a tough start to the year… and since then we’ve won eight days in a row, so it’s been great,” Richard Mason said after the first leg at Gisborne. “You never stop losing that will to win and we always have different things to focus on at every rally. At the moment we’re on a bit of a winning streak, but every time we start a new day we think, what do we have to do to win?” The Masons’ winning run included all three legs of Rally New Zealand, where they also outpaced all the internationals in the Production (Group N) class. But that was not as easy as it might have looked, Mason said. “I’ve got to say we were struggling the first couple of days, especially on Friday night when they pulled the gearbox out and attempted repairs to the clutch, which didn’t work,” he said at the end of that event. “Saturday night we got the clutch all going again and today we found driving comfortably brought the times to us. There have been a lot of mentions from other competitors that our time around the Auckland Domain stage was incredible – especially from Petter Solberg.” Nice to be praised by a former world champion! Leg one of Gisborne Vehicle Testing Waikanae Beach Holiday Park Rally Gisborne saw plenty of incident. The Masons’ championship rival Emma Gilmour from Dunedin won the first stage in her Subaru, with the Masons down in seventh because of a steering problem. Fast Christchurch driver Matt Jansen, close behind Gilmour on time, rolled his Subaru STI on stage two and had to retire for the day. Gilmour then slowed with brake problems and Coromandel driver Alex Kelsey hit the lead – only to suffer later by running out of fuel and then stopping with clutch failure. Former champion Chris West from Timaru then seized the lead after the third stage in his brand new Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X. But in stage five West was forced out with damaged front suspension – while

Gilmour suffered a similar fate, after hitting a bank. Mason won that stage and, with his rivals dropping out, that put him in front and he stayed there for the day’s final two stages, winning the points to wrap up his fourth Gold Star championship title. “I really enjoyed the roads today,” he said. “They were twisty, but not tight and that’s how we like them – every corner was a challenge and grip levels were changeable.” The roads, mainly west of Gisborne city, were new to most of the competitors and conditions were tricky because recent rain had left some sections of road more slippery than others. More than six minutes back in second place for the leg was Dave Strong in his Ford Fiesta S2000, with Ben Hunt third in a 1600cc Fiesta. Gilmour decided not to start leg two, as her second place in the series was secure and she was not happy with the handling of her car after a spin and hitting a bank in leg one. “Had our second placing in the championship been at risk we certainly could have repaired the steering and rejoined for the rally’s

second leg,” she said. “However with Jansen’s leg one retirement that was no longer the case. As a result, with the car not handling 100 percent, we decided to sit out leg two.” Mason now had nothing to lose and he pressed on to win the first two stages on the second day, in the Tolaga Bay region. But then it was his turn to hit strife and he had to retire with a gearbox failure. West and Jansen had rejoined the rally after their exits on day one and they finished first and second respectively for the leg. Third for the leg was series sponsor and veteran Brian Green, who had been rallying since the early 1970s. And that gave Green and co-driver Fleur Pedersen the overall victory in their Mitsubishi, Green’s first in the New Zealand championship since 2001. “We feel very happy, and I’m very tired,” the Manawatu driver said. “The team’s worked really hard and Fleur has done a great job in the car – we’re extremely happy. Gisborne has always had really good roads. They were smooth and fast but also very tricky; lots of crests with corners straight after them.” Green and Pedersen also compete in the AsiaPacific Rally Championship and their overseas commitments forced them to miss two rounds of their home series, but they still finished the season sixth overall. Hunt was second overall for the rally – in a two-wheel-drive car – and Brent Taylor third in a Toyota Corolla. It was certainly a rally that rewarded consistency – all the top eight seeds failed to finish at least one leg. Final points in the drivers championship: 1 Richard Mason 145, 2 Emma Gilmour 100, 3 Matt Jansen 82, 4 Chris West 60, 5 Alex Kelsey 51, 6 Brian Green 38, 7 Ben Hunt 34, 8 Matt Summerfield 29, 9 Sloan Cox 22, 10 = Kinglsey Thomspson and Marcus van Klink 21. Sara Mason won the co-driver championship while other championship titles included: Group N 4WD, Richard Mason; Group N 2WD, Ben Hunt; Open Class 4WD, Matt Summerfield; Open Class 2WD, David Holder; Historic Challenge Trophy, Marcus van Klink; Junior, Matt Jansen; Rookie, David Holder; and Manufacturers, Subaru. reader reply 0120934

Early start for F5000 series season

Reigning MSC NZ F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series champion Steve Ross (McRae GM1 # 5) leading Andrew Robson (Lola T332), Bryan Sala (Matich A50) and David Abbott (Lola T430) at the final round of the 2011/12 series at Phillip Island earlier this year.

A starring roll at the annual Muscle Car Masters meeting in Sydney on the first weekend of September meant an earlier-than-usual start for the 10th annual MSC New Zealand F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series. The appearance at the popular Muscle Car Masters meeting was one of two for the MSC series across the Tasman this season, with a return to the recently refurbished and renamed Sydney Motorsport Park (formerly Eastern Creek) circuit in late November for the 2012 Australian Tasman Revival historic motor racing meeting. Inbetween is the first New Zealand round at the annual Wigram Revival meeting at Christchurch’s Powerbuilt Tools Raceway at Ruapuna Park on October 27/28, and after the Tasman Revival

meeting in Sydney over the November 24/25 weekend come the back-to-back fourth and fifth MSC series rounds at the two NZ Festival of Motor Racing – celebrating Denny Hulme meetings at Hampton Downs over consecutive weekends in late January 2013. Defending MSC series champion Steve Ross (McRae GM1) heads a 14-strong Kiwi assault on the Muscle Car Masters meetings with support from a key group of local racers including threetime former series champion Ken Smith (Lola T430), 2011/12 season series runner-up Aaron Burson (McRae GM1) and fellow Aucklanders Roger Williams (Lola T332) and Clark Proctor (March 73A). Expected to take the battle to the Kiwis,

meanwhile, are top Australian category exponents Andrew Robson and James Davison (both Lola T332), and Bryan Sala (Matich A50). As in previous years, at the high summer rounds of the MSC series in New Zealand the local fields will be supplemented by entries from category aficionados from the UK, the US, Canada and Australia. The New Zealand F5000 Association now has 88 owner/drivers with race-ready cars on its books, the majority (49) Kiwis, but with its own domestic series finally up and running Australia can now boast 18 to supplement the 10 from the UK, one (current Lady Wigram trophy holder Jay Esterer) from Canada and balance from the United States of America. This season at least 19 of the Kiwi regulars are committed to contest all rounds of the series with another four doing at least two or three of the other rounds here. Nine Australian drivers have also indicated that they will be doing rounds of the series on both sides of the Tasman this season. UK regulars Mark Dwyer (Lola T400) Greg Thornton (Chevron B24), Michael Whatley (Surtees TS8), Frank, Judy and Michael Lyons (Gurney Eagle, Lola T332 & Lola T400) and Peter Dunn (March 73A) have also confirmed their intention to return, as have Americans Bruce Lesson (McLaren M10B), Harin de Silva (Surtees TS8) and Eric Haga (Lola T190), and Canadian Jay Esterer (McRae GM1). Expected to debut new cars this season, meanwhile, are series regular Poul Christie and fellow Aucklander Frank Karl. Both are currently putting the finishing touches to freshly restored McLaren M10 models. reader reply 0120936

Millen sets new world record in a Hyundai Kiwi Rhys Millen has won the 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado, setting a new world record in a race-prepared Hyundai Genesis Coupe. US-based Millen set a blazing pace to the summit, taking only 9:46.16 to complete the course, which is renowned for its tough corners and steep climbs of over 4300 metres. Millen says his team made their own performance enhancements to the world-record-setting Genesis Coupe, the same car that set the Time Attack 2WD record in 2011 with Rod Millen, Rhys’s father, at the wheel. “With the insights gained from the last few years in our Genesis Coupe, the team was able to make some high-impact improvements, leveraging additional down force and traction opportunities provided by the new all-tarmac surface,” says Millen. “And behind the wheel, my experience at Pikes Peak over the years allowed me to shave a few tenths from virtually every corner. “Breaking the 10-minute barrier is something I’ve always wanted to do, and it feels great to accomplish this goal in 2012,” says Millen. The team maximised the grip potential of the new all-tarmac course but fitting a new aero package, new ultra-wide, Hankook F200 tyres on custom HRE lightweight wheels. The car’s front splitter, rear wing and rear body kit were also redesigned for additional strength, stability and down force. For extra power, a new Garrett GTX3582

turbocharger was fitted, which yields 522 kW of power and 949 Nm of torque from the Hyundai V6 engine. To compensate for the extra power, the brake calipers were upgraded for extra thermal capacity, and additional cooling ductwork was installed to ensure optimal brake performance at the summit’s extreme altitudes.

The car was scrutinised for any weight reduction while suspension settings were optimised for Millen’s unique rally/drift driving techniques. It was a close race with only two hundredths of a second between Millen and second place getter Frenchman Romain Dumas. reader reply 0120937

New partners for Tasman Motorsport Tasman Motorsports Group (TMG) has confirmed its first two sponsorship partners for its V8 SuperTourer campaign with the announcement that Replay XD and Shelby Auto Care will be joining the team. Distributed locally by Digital Logistics Group, Replay XD, is a new range of ultra-lightweight cameras, and motorsports specific mounts which provide a previously unseen way to capture the

excitement of action sports and putting the viewer at the heart of the action. Also new to the local market, Shelby Auto Care, a division of Shelby American Inc, provides a range of professional car care cleaning products for the motoring enthusiast, including quick easy spray wax, rubber and vinyl protectant and liquid wax. Digital Logistics Group managing director Grant Eveleigh says he is excited to join TMG in the V8 A Replay XD 1080 with chassis mount.

SuperTourer series which provides the perfect platform to launch the two new brands into the New Zealand market. “I know TMG have a rich heritage in motorsport and are proven winners in everything they have campaigned, I’m proud to be partnering the team in V8 SuperTourers,” says Eveleigh. TMG Team Principal Steve Horne says Replay XD and Shelby Auto Care are two great partner brands to have onboard with the team. “The Replay XD 1080 cameras we have onboard not only allow us to share all the on track action from any angle in and on the car, but we also use them as a data acquisition tool to overlay lap footage with the cars onboard data after each session. The drivers and engineers analyse the footage against the onboard data in search of gains and improvements,” says Horne. Replay XD will adorn the Tasman Motorsports Group Ford Falcon on the wing mirrors, headlights and top of windscreen. Shelby Auto Care will adorn the front and rear corners.
