+ whats around? the site is located in the warehouse disctric on Phoenix, AZ. it is a buffer between south Phoenix comminitites and downtown. once the heart of the economical growth of phoenix the warehouse distric was left behind from the development growth of the city. the idea of reviving it didnt came until entrepreneurs saw the potencial and started to bring their business here. this new community came with eclectic ideas. they enphasis their values of culture, creativity and sustainability.

the warehouse district had been left behind from the development of the city. a few decades ago this area was the heart of the economical growth of the city. business were importing and exporting goods witch lead to the develpment of many local business. people were also coming and going with the adaptation of amtrak (a passengers train). the warehouse was a hotspot in the city.now a days, it is on a reviving process. the culture and community are growing with the actions by the new inhabitants of the district. many of them are entrepenours that with their services are creating a more walkable area. the predominant business types in this area are event venues, artist studios, creative professional offices and restaurants.

1

the site is big enough to have a crutial influence in the warehouse revival. It wants to be a mix between public and private spaces that contribute to the district growth. the site aproach should be sensitive towards the community values: culture, creativity and sustainability. the train track system is the interstitial space between the warehouse district and downtown, therefore, the site wants extend from 7 ave to 7 st through the train tracks to create a bike corridor that connects them.

in the site we have two existing structure, one being the union station and the other a seven story parking structure. the pragram had to reflect the community values, i ended up proposing this. the roof of the union station is remove and the remaining is used as structure, changing the original progrmas and boundries of the building. what was an exterior wall now becomes an exterior one. the structure was treated on a similar way and just removing, and re purpusing, 1/4 of the structure. the major cut was done on the east south portion to upen up space an have a better connection between the two public facilities. private business

the connection between both buildings was a big question. flashy connection? obscure conenction? or not connection at all? the interstitial space between these two building was conencted by a corridor that started for the general public then morph into the bike corridor.

The panel’s opening size and orientation can be change base on the space that it is protecting . on top we have business that is why the opening are smaller and oriented a sertain way to let just the perfect light come in. Thre porosity of the panels allows you to have a great view of the outside even if the opening is not framing the view. The lower area with panels has the library / lobby that is why the opening are bigger trying to have the interior space well lit.

7

The panels are to capture light into the building but they also have the posibility to have different uses. Essentially it creates an ENVELOPE that is interactive and does more than just regulate light. In this example since they are on the library they can be use as sitting. People can just relax and learn in an element that we normally see as a barries.

adaptive dmv location: san diego, california instructors: max underwood, bryan maddock, elizabeth mclean We were asked to redesign the relationship be- tween public service (dmv) and public space. This project is located in little italy, San Diego with a site that is only 100ft by 100ft. The purpose of the design is to delete or at least blur the boundary between the public service and public space. Essentially most of the design is open to the regular public, even most parts of the dmv. I also have platforms that can serve as a waiting area for the dmv but also as a hang-out space for people visiting the site. To have activity in all of them I added a coffee place and a daycare on the top platform. this brings activity in the ground as well as in the platforms. There is a market hap- pening on Ceddar street every weekend. In order to attract people to the site, I allow food trucks to come in so the site becomes an informal gathering space.

stadium perspective

lagos recycle stadium location: lagos, nigeria instructor: philip horton collaboration: henry erives, juan garcia This project is located on the Olusosun land ll which is located in Lagos, Nigeria. Current problems in the site and community around it are ooding and the accumulation of trash. As an atempt to solve these problems the topography is cre- ated with a mix of trash and dirt that is currently on the site. When it rains, the water will be directed by the topogra- phy in to several collection areas. Areas that should not be ooded are at a higer level. This keeps programs out of the water and uses the materials that are found on the site in a productive way. This stadium will be an inte- gral part of the community with many needs and activities for people. Accessibility to an open rooftop with plenty of room for activities and circula- tion and the use of many foors as a community center invites the public in. 17

tonto creek camp location: tonto national park intructor : Claudio Vekstein, Felipe Mesa, Catherine Spellman This was a vertical studio with 4rd and 3rd year of the Architecture studies program at ASU. The Studio was divided into two phases. Phase one was to develop a master plan proposal for the camp. There were 9 groups of 10 people each. At the end of phase one, three master plans were chosen to continue developing them. Phase two consisted of designing or redesigning one of the buildings on the masterplan. I worked with another student in phase two. ( All drawings and model were done in collaboration with other students except section 1, section 2 and axon.) Phase 1: In this phase, we learn more about the camp and tried to understand the history of the camp and the area. We were also asked to analyze the camp and located the features that would be important in the development of the master plan. That information was interpreted and drawn in a layer. In the end, we had 9 different layers and from that, we had to design a master plan. Phase 2: After phase one, we were assigned a building on 1 of the three master plans. My partner and I had to redesign 3 existing metal frame buildings for the new dining hall and kitchen. One of the constraints was to keep the original structure, we could only add to it but not remove main members. This is the first building campers will see when they arrive, that is why we decided to have views to the Tonto forest from the building because of its great location above other structures south. When you arrive you get a glance of the other side and the building is open for people to look around. All the utilities are centralized and you have a dining area on both sides.

work at gould evans during my internship i have participated only in one project-a courthouse in phoenix, arizona. one of my fist task was to create a wall section that show the intended connection outside. the created the wall section with the help from someone in the team. Also, around that time I needed to create a diagram that show the relatioship of the existing building, the public and the new building. besides drawings i have performed more hands on explorations. me and another intern were ask to build a 1 to 1 scale model of the courtroom bech for the users, the judges, come and test it.
