Summer Message from the Executive Director We have had an extremely busy year and welcomed many of you to the IOE to engage with us in developing professional practice. We look forward to an equally busy autumn with a line-up of new opportunities including recognition for coaching. Our theme for next year is ‘Leading together’ reflecting our commitment to working with you to deepen and broaden all aspects of leadership development. So we are particularly excited to welcome Sir Michael Barber to the LCLL as our Annual lecture speaker on 8th March, 2011: please see below for more details. Forthcoming events LCLL Annual lecture, 8th March 2011, 5.30 - 7.30pm We are delighted that Sir Michael Barber, a former professor at the Institute of Education, will give our 2011 annual lecture on the theme of ‘Leading together’. He is the expert partner at McKinsey in its Global Public Sector Practice, working on major transformations of public services, especially education, in the USA, UK and other countries. In the autumn, Sir Michael Barber’s work at McKinsey will be published which will form the basis of his lecture on March 8th here at the Institute, this event is free for LCLL members. Recent events Our successful LCLL Annual conference We held a very successful annual conference in early July, with a keynote presentation from Professor Louise Stoll on deep learning conversations and a wide range of workshops. The day was enthusiastically received by the participants. ‘All of the workshops and the learning conversations I attended were excellent. Time had been built in to share ideas and experiences, which was invaluable’ Ms Kelly Stock, Westminster City Council. Winter School heat wave for Australian principals Our conference tied in with Australian visitors here for their Winter School held at the LCLL, built around the Australian Leadership Capability Framework. In addition to joining in with our conference, participants engaged in workshops and visits to schools, which were the highlight of their week. ‘It brought together speakers that are rarely accessible, they knew their stuff, and made it practical to my school’ Dr James Heslop, Principal, Hillside Christian College, Australia. Seminar on community cohesion Rob Higham chaired a British Academy seminar – ‘Positive action and community cohesion in the UK’. Senior UK academics contributed exploring equal opportunities legislation, community cohesion policies, citizenship education and the rise of the extreme right in the UK. A suite of coaching opportunities NEW ! Coaching School – Recognition Award Scheme Our new award scheme is in response to your requests for a recognition of the important role that coaching plays. The award is gained at Bronze, Silver or Gold level. This scheme is about partnerships to support schools and promoting excellence in this core area and is equally appropriate for organisations, teams and departments. Contact: c.to@ioe.ac.uk

NEW ! Mentoring and Coaching for Excellence – masters level module A distance learning programme for the essentials of mentoring and coaching. This is the ideal opportunity for mentors of NQT’s, professionals using coaching for CPD and leaders requiring this key skill and leads to an IOE Certificate of Completion. NEW ! Two new M level coaching and mentoring modules starting in October Advancing coaching and mentoring practice in and across organisational contexts and Coaching and mentoring principles, theory and application to practice Coaching and Mentoring have become integral to educational practice and leadership, so gaining in-depth knowledge and skills in this field is crucial.


One module focuses on advancing coaching/mentoring practice for individuals: the other is about making coaching/mentoring work for teams, organisations and communities. Both are suitable for people with an interest, commitment and some experience in developing others and who want to developing their knowledge, and skills. By taking both these modules you will gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Mentoring and Coaching (subject to validation). NEW ! Developing Assessment for Learning to raise achievement This is a truly transformational and unique programme using principles designed by Professor Dylan Wiliam. We have worked closely with LAs, learning communities and chartered assessors to combine practitioner expertise and perspectives on supporting the leadership of change. National College Recognition Award Paula Holt, an LCLL master’s participant, received the National College Recognition Award for Outstanding Contribution to System Leadership at the 2010 Annual Leadership Conference. The Secretary of State for Education, Rt. Hon. Michael Gove, MP, presented the award in recognition of research Paula carried out as part of a National College programme. ‘The System Leadership approach that I have developed through my work with the IOE and the NC has been invaluable in my work.’ Click here for further details.

Research NEW ! New Student Research Programme Does your school make full use of student voice? Have you ever wondered how to develop your school council, or better still, involve students in school evaluation? Would you like your students to be able to develop their research, presentation and communication skills? LERU offers tailored development programmes for young people – in key stages 2, 3, 4 and 5 which include development sessions, materials, a presentation event and certification.
