e-news from the LCLL
Dear colleagues LCLL hosted an extremely successful annual lecture in April with Viviane Robinson, Distinguished Professor at The University of Auckland, New Zealand. Viviane spoke about the key elements of leadership that have an impact on student outcomes. To continue the conversation more widely, we focus on three of these elements and ways we can support you to develop your work. Ensuring quality teaching and learning We have a number of events tailored to this theme with details in the right hand panel. Starting in September, we also offer Grand Curriculum Designs, a pioneering programme to design flexible and innovative curricula: contact: Tim Lancaster for more details. Establishing goals and expectations The Professional Development Quality Mark is a very valuable resource for leaders to benchmark the quality and impact of professional development in school improvement practice. The PDQM mark is verified by the IOE. For more information and to download the Quality Mark Framework and Verification process click here Download: Booking form (pdf) | Flyer (pdf) Leading teacher learning and development Our suite of masters leadership programmes, such as Educational Leadership (International) MBA and MA Leadership offers high quality professional learning. Additionally, Innovative leadership of professional development is tailored to colleagues with experience of leading professional development. This exciting programme, developed by the LCLL, also supports you in the verification of the Professional Development Quality Mark. Finally, we have a number of forthcoming events this term, including a fascinating look at the complexities of the new leadership landscape on 19 th June, based on research we conducted with National College. We look forward to seeing you at one of these learning opportunities.

Supporting school priorities The IOE is working closely with heads and senior leaders in several Newham schools to design bespoke professional development opportunities tailored specifically to address school priorities. Innovative and flexible programmes have been developed which draw on latest research into what makes effective professional development. Examples:
Stretch and Challenge – from A to A* (2010-2011) Five secondary schools (Cumberland, Langdon, Rokeby, Royal Docks and Little Ilford) worked together to support more able pupils to reach and exceed their potential in Maths and English at Key Stage 4. IOE subject experts observed and coached individual teachers and facilitated subject-specific workshops. Crucially, the project was designed around a framework for evaluating impact devised by LCLL. Specialist facilitators used the framework to support senior leaders to track and evidence the difference the teaching interventions made to practice and outcomes for pupils. This maximised the impact of professional learning so that new knowledge and skills were demonstrably embedded in classroom practice. Calverton School: making a difference through peer coaching to support post-lesson dialogue Having learned the power of coaching for themselves, the head and deputy head at Calverton Primary School wanted to engage their staff in coaching to enhance talk about learning and teaching and to encourage colleagues to be more autonomous in identifying their professional development needs. As a result, each member of staff has self-diagnosed an aspect of their practice that they wish to develop and to have positive impact on pupils. They drew on LCLL’s impact evaluation approach to support their thinking and identify impact. They will share their learning with each other at the end of this year with a view to developing classroom enquiry as a more formal approach to CPD for next academic year.
