Autumn message from the Executive Director I do hope that your academic year has started well. We have a full calendar of exciting events and opportunities for you this autumn as well as a tremendous opportunity to hear Sir Michael Barber, who is coming to the LCLL as our annual lecture speaker on 8th March, 2011. Please see below for more details. This year’s theme ‘Leading together’ reflects our commitment to working with you to deepen and broaden all aspects of leadership development. We are also proud to announce our new website, which, if you haven’t already visited it, is at www.lcll.org.uk/. We feature examples of the research and development opportunities we offer, the activity and partners with which we engage and ways in which we can work with you. Forthcoming lead event LCLL Annual Lecture, 8th March 2011, 5.30 - 7.30pm The Centre will be hosting Sir Michael Barber, a former professor at the Institute of Education, who will give our 2011 annual lecture on the theme of ‘Leading together’ on the 8th March 2011. Sir Michael is the expert partner at McKinsey in its Global Public Sector Practice, working on major transformations of public services, especially education, in the USA, UK and other countries. This


autumn, his work at McKinsey will be published and will form the basis of his lecture at the Institute. This event is free for members so we expect a very busy booking period. Book your place now by clicking here!

Autumn Events 2010-2011 events programme at the LCLL We have an exciting and stimulating programme of events for you this year. We’d like to flag up our two October events at the IOE:‘Putting the Jewel in the Crown’ NUT one-day professional development conference, 20 October, 2010 (10.00 am – 4.00 pm) NUT’s conference focuses on ensuring that professional development is effective and has impact. ‘Education and Citizenship in a Globalising World’, IOE international conference, IOE, 19-20 November. The IOE is holding a biennial joint international conference with Beijing Normal University. Keynote speakers include Lord Bhikhu Parekh, Professor Krishna Kumar from India, Professor Li Ping and Professor Tan Chuanbao from China, as well as the IOE director, Geoff Whitty, and Chris Husbands, who takes over the reins as director of the IOE in January, 2011. Presenters from some 30 countries will talk about their work in a rich programme of parallel sessions. This conference touches on many issues for leading learning in a globalised world. Recently held events Improving organisations: strategic leadership of professional development: seminar, TES education show, Olympia, Friday 1st October. Vivienne Porritt recently gave a well-received seminar at this national exhibition on the role of the person responsible for leading professional development in educational organisations which is changing rapidly. Colleagues working in this field need to consider both the quality of the development opportunities offered and strategic approaches to harnessing the impact of professional development to ensure improvement in the learning of pupils, the development of individuals and teams and the organisation itself. Courses and programmes for September 2010 Leading people for effective learning – flexible learning opportunity This 4-day module will be running from December – January 2011, over three Fridays and Saturdays. Take it as a free-standing single module or combine it with other modules to receive a diploma or go onto achieve the full MBA (see next item). The programme consists of two M level modules which can be completed over one year of part-time study. Part of the TDA's national development programme, this exciting opportunity is for colleagues with experience of leading professional development (PD) in all educational phases and sectors as well as aspiring and new PD leaders. A suite of coaching opportunities NEW ! Foundations for successful mentoring and coaching - DVD-based learning programme Develop ‘hands on’ skills and a good understanding of underlying theory. Available as a disc and study materials for learning at your own pace, this is the first of two modules on mentoring and coaching, the second exploring coaching at


organisational level, but both can be studied as a stand-alone course. The programme leads to an IOE certificate of completion. Cost £120 for DVD-only course, and £660 for DVD course and comprehensive online/telephone support. Contact: c.to@ioe.ac.uk

NEW ! Coaching school – recognition award scheme Our new award scheme is in response to your requests for a recognition of the important role that coaching plays. The award is gained at Bronze, Silver or Gold level. This scheme is about partnerships to support schools and promoting excellence in this core area and is equally appropriate for organisations, teams and departments. We offer two versions; coaching recognition for school assessment and full report, £1950, and with an additional discussion on recommendations and support in creating your own school coaching development plan, £2550. NEW ! Two new M level coaching and mentoring modules starting in October Advancing coaching and mentoring practice in and across organisational contexts and Coaching and mentoring principles, theory and application to practice Coaching and mentoring have become integral to educational practice and leadership, so gaining in-depth knowledge and skills in this field is crucial. One module focuses on advancing coaching/mentoring practice for individuals. The other is about making coaching/mentoring work for teams, organisations and communities. By taking both these modules you will gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Mentoring and Coaching. NEW ! Developing assessment for learning to raise achievement This is a truly transformational and unique programme using principles designed by Professor Dylan Wiliam. We have worked closely with LAs, learning communities and chartered assessors to combine practitioner expertise and perspectives on supporting the leadership of change. Research LCLL wins large research grant for research into young leaders The LCLL’s Dr Karen Edge, course leader MA Leadership, has won a three-year ESRC award for research in London, Toronto and New York entitled: Young Global City Leaders: building an evidence base in London, New York and Toronto to support the next generation of school leadership innovation. Findings will be shared via reports, papers and accessible resources and in a conference in each city for interested policy makers, programme leaders, and local authorities.


LERU’s research fellows Five London schools and seven IOE students have been successful in their applications for LERU research grants.
