BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONOURS) IN ARCHITECTURE THEORIES OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM (ARC61303/ARC2224)

SYNOPSIS: REACTION PAPER (AUGUST 2016) [10 MARKS] NAME: KAN JIA WEI ADRIAN ID: 0319384 LECTURER: MR NICHOLAS TUTORIAL TIME: 4PM-6PM SYNOPSIS NO: 2 READER TITLE: SEMIOLOGY AND ARCHITECTURE AUTHOR: CHARLES JENCKS In the extract of Charles Jencks’ Semiology and Architecture, the first division of the extraction focuses heavily on human nature and it’s preference, or rather will to resist change. This has, as Jencks pointed out, given pioneers of the new a ridiculous amount of negative perception and generally most humans have resisted change from what has been the norm to them. It does, however, end up rather ironically into the formation of a new era in itself from the denial that it generates. The second section encompasses Jencks’ agreement to the long withheld connotation that “meaning” in itself it not of singular variety, but multifaceted in that there are relations to a meaning and actions to a work and not one that has been solely placed on easy thought. The next focus of thought from Jencks was the usage of context and metaphor, driving home the fact that in all disciples of life be it food or architecture they all convey meaning in similar manners. The writer stresses that, an object or topic will gain meaning through various means, some of which may find harmonious balance in opposing ideologies and forces. Lastly, Jencks emphasizes that any work of a human may be subject of critical thinking or analysis, wether it be the best works of Shakespeare or the odd baguette from Lyon, which he ultimately concludes how it can lead to architecture eras due to the clustering of architects as a result of similar beliefs and thinkings. The writer then ends with his personal opinion on his taste for his architecture style. Personally, I feel that this extraction from Jencks is a very insightful and invaluable read as it stimulates thought provoking situations in otherwise what is perceived to be normal everyday occurences. What is to be had from this extraction is also to ensure that, in my interpretation, that although meaning, a work of one may come in the form of the most complex building in the known world to a simple pastry, a “work” is and can be subjected to any relevant and meaningful form of semiotics which then can be learnt from sections of society not necessarily directly correlated to that item of study/meaning.
