BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONOURS) IN ARCHITECTURE THEORIES OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM (ARC61303/ARC2224)

SYNOPSIS: REACTION PAPER (AUGUST 2016) [10 MARKS] NAME: KAN JIA WEI ADRIAN ID: 0319384 LECTURER: MR NICHOLAS TUTORIAL TIME: 4PM-6PM SYNOPSIS NO: 3 READER TITLE: THE GEOMETRY OF FEELING AUTHOR: JUHANI PALLASMAA

The extraction of Juhani Pallasmaa’s write up “ The Geometry of Feeling “ exponentially focuses and explains the abstract feelings and personal connection that one would experience individually towards architecture. She starts off with the explanation and comparison as to why olden or previous architecture styles are more fondly remembered and as a result connected to an individual as compared to a modern designed building today. It is explained by the author on how architecture is a play with form, and how the result of that causes the end user to experience different feelings of emotion towards a particular building. It is also explained that the current focus on reduction and minimalism towards modern architecture today severely alienates and pulls away most users to what they are normally used to associate architecture feeling with towards a building or structure. The author further explains that’s architecture has likely lost it’s way as a form of art expression, as well as the entire essence of architecture in the first place, using examples derived from other forms of art such as music and poetry as a form of similar examples. The author further explains her reasoning, providing examples of memory and feeling of an occupant in relation to the architecture, using memory and the human senses as precedence. The author would go on proclaiming that spaces would be defined by the user on feelings and memory via many exponential factors in and around the building that would create feeling and memory long registered in the users, such as a window that serves as a medium for the user to look out to the landscape, or dark and bright locations around a house that formed as a result of light and shadow. Finally the article ends with a brief explanation on how a church may be built and understood from feeling. What I gained or understood from this article is that architecture is strongly linked to the user as a form of memory and feeling via many different aspects, with each subject or user owning to different facet of aspects. This only reaffirms my thoughts on how architecture should be designed to ensure that the users are not alienated from an experience they are used to and that more identity should be seeked in the actual design of modern architecture around the world.
